#StickiedForAReason
Votes that do not follow the template will not be counted!

At this time I am using a counter system, listing the number of days votes take to be put into action. However for write-in votes you don't know how many days an action may take. For this we will use the old system of Major/Minor Decisions, and I will tell you how many days/weeks/months the plan will take. Remember that every month has 28 days, and that there are 13 months in the year with New Years as a special day alone outside the months. There is no leap year, as their calendar is not accurate to that degree.

Major decisions are any new endeavors. Finding new investments. Finding new allies (specify what type, where you're looking if possible, what you want from them, etc) finding new trainers, starting new training even if it is with people you already know... Anything new.

No mixing something that would qualify as a minor decision or free action into your major votes! If you have a question about your votes, ask me.

Talking with specific people about specific subjects. You can generally only talk with one person at a time with this. There are simple logical exceptions, Husband & Wife combos can be put together as one conversation, brother & sister, stuff like that. I'll clarify if a combo is unacceptable when I see the vote. This is also for continuing any long term action. Any major decision that you have already voted to start (not just mused about in-story) can be a minor action the next time around. Continuing training that you have already begun for example. Continuing a long-term investigation or plot. Stuff like this.

Making small talk with characters. You will not learn anything special really, but it gives you more insight into their backgrounds and history, can raise/lower their loyalty or other relationship points with you, etc. Raising/lowering and how much depends on rolls.

These can interrupt any current action(s) and will take precedence over the current plan. A way to change things on the fly as you discover new information or alternate ways to potentially enhance your plan, or change it completely if needed.

Remember for all votes if you take a guard or other individual with you, you will need to write-in which guard/person you take with you (just saying take a guard or ally will leave the decision of which one up to me) and also whether Daenerys tries to use any future knowledge on the decision as well if it is one of hers or she is present. (She still may decide to try and use her future knowledge without your consent if she thinks it necessary.) These details are sub-votes.

[] [Plan] X (Current Month, Short Term, Long Term, Immediate Actions, Purchases, etc.)
-[] Major Decisions: Character name here
--[] Major Decision 1
---[] Sub-conditions of Major Decision 1
---[] Sub-conditions of Major Decision 1
--[] Major Decision 2
---[] Sub-conditions of Major Decision 2
---[] Sub-conditions of Major Decision 2
-[] Minor Decisions: Character name here
--[] Minor Decision 1
---[] Sub-conditions of Minor Decision 1
---[] Sub-conditions of Minor Decision 1
--[] Minor Decision 2
-[] Free Actions: Character name here
--[] Free Action 1
---[] Sub-conditions
--[] Free Action 2
---[] Sub-conditions

You get the jist of this.

However, under the plan vote, you will then put a "Priority" Vote.

[] Aegon Priority: 1. Major Decision 1, 2. Free Action 2, 3. Minor Decision 1, 4. Major Decision 2, etc.
[] Daenerys Priority: 1. Free Action 2, 2. Major Decision 3, 3. Minor Decision 1, etc.

This way we can vote on the general plan, then I can separate the order of events in said plan.

Don't put V1, V2, or any other such revision information into your plan. Just leave it like I have it. Nothing extra. The tally system will update to your newest post. No need to make version markers. It just makes things harder for me.

If an action in a plan is not one for a specific character, more a general idea of what needs to be done, it will still need to go into the priority matrix.

At the end of all your votes, put your reasons explaining your vote choice. As I've said before, a plan with reasons will get more weight than one without. Because reasons matter. I care about reasons more than numbers. I need reasons to help build the characters. Get used to putting reasons into your plans, as eventually reasons will become a requirement rather than a suggestion. This post will change when that occurs.

[] [Plan] X

You may (but are not required to) put additional reasons to agree with that plan beneath your vote if there are reasons for it that the original vote creator didn't put in that you thought of. The more/better the reasoning inside explaining a vote, the greater the chance it will be added into the story.

Votes are typically closed after either 12 or 24 hours unless real life interferes. Ties will be either decided by me, or by whoever is in the forum or the Discord that has not voted already at the time. I will @ whoever is currently in the forum or Discord that I choose to be the tiebreaker.

Plans have specific timelines. Immediate Actions are obviously immediate. Current Month is similarly self-explanatory. Short Term is something that can conceivably be done within 1-3 months, and Long Term is 3-6 months.

I think part of the issue is that many stories tend to treat the nobility as vestigial even when it is still the core of power. It's like a CYankee in King Arthur's court except not tongue in cheek.

I kind of agree with that actually. I think it also has to do with democracy. Most people grow up in democratic areas and are used to thinking they have a say in what goes on. They don't come from dictatorships where people actually know how powerless they are. People take having a voice for granted. They forget that sometimes even if you are right it doesn't matter because the person who has the power says "nope, I'm doing it my way". They forget that power matters more than arguments in this kind of thing.

Then there is modern child rearing. They grow up in homes where their parents word isn't law, where their parents try to talk to them and explain rather than having a situation where they either obey or get their asses beat. They think that they matter. Midieval societies don't work that way though. You either have power, or you make friends who do. People knew how to compromise because they understood the realities of power.

There is a reason that when Cristianity took over pagan areas, they converted their holidays to christian ones. Christmas is banned by the bible as a pagan tradition. Easter is not christian. Yet these holidays exist in christianity. Not because Jesus, but because politics. People accepted being forced to worship another god, but they would not give up their customs. So they recolored them Christian to keep the people happy. That is how things work. People care more about their little customs than their big rules.

In this era people don't know how to compromise anymore, which is why so many marriages fail. Because everyone thinks they can have it their way. Polarization is rampant in modern times. Everyone is either "on my side" or else they are nazis. Middle grounds have been worn away, debate is lost, and so people don't understand nuance and politics. People are tyrannical but think they are benevolent, and everyone ELSE is the tyrant to be destroyed, without considering just what the definition of a tyrant is, and whether their own views could be wrong. The era of "every viewpoint is valid" means that only your viewpoint matters because you don't have to change. But because of that idea that your views are valid no matter what, then no one changes and everyone ends up fighting. But I'm going way off topic now.

So I'll say it simply. This is not a debate. You can change the Volanteene society, if you take it slowly. If you gain respect and allies then slowly start changing things a little at a time, showing them things that actually work better. If you instead try to lord over them from day one because dragons, you will fail horribly. That is WOG. I was being nice to give the warning. Take the warning or don't.

Day 5 of the Eighth Month 297 AC
Winning Vote

None

None

[X] Go into the walls and visit the priest. The men will guard the ships while you are away.
-[X] With Daenerys.
-[X] With Nalaehra.

[X] A king's palanquin. A palanquin in the style of the Triarchs, as a Dragonlord it is only fitting. 1500 Dragons.

Day 5 of the Eighth Month 297 AC
The sun is setting, but you will show Qavo that he does not have quite as much power as he thinks. His grandfather Triarch undoubtedly holds power and influence, but Qavo is merely hanging onto his grandfather's coattails. It is a small thing, but small things can grow into larger ones eventually. You will plant the seeds of doubt into him now. Let him understand that you do not conform to him, that he is not someone to control your actions, directly or indirectly.

You, Daenerys, and Nalaehra all board your palanquin, carried by the slaves you are renting. You'll only have them for a fortnight before they must be returned to the shop outside the walls. You will need your own replacements by then. For now however, you ride in comfort. The swaying of the palanquin is strange at first, but the rhythm of the slaves is steady, and you quickly grow accustomed to the well timed steps.

A full head and shoulders above the crowd now, you have a much better view of the city as you pass through. The flames are being lit as the sun sets, and you hear Daenerys gasp. Following her eyes you see the stars and firelight reflecting off of the ocean, as the last light of day grows dim in the sky. In the distance you can see the "black" walls of Volantis practically glowing in the evening light, reflecting and refracting the sun's rays and emanating with the heat that they have absorbed. The Grand Temple of R'hllor shines as well, glowing with all the colors of the evening sky, and as the sun finally settles below the horizon, in the last moments the great fiery heart situated atop the temple seems to blaze like a beacon to the city. Pagan god or no, the sight is majestic and so close to the black walls it uses the dark stones as a backdrop, making the sight stand out all the more. Daenerys' eyes are alight with wonder, and you decide that you have waited long enough. Ceremony may be important, but some things are more important than politics.

When the light trapped in the heart is finally fading, somehow lasting long after the sun has vanished; Dany's eyes return to you, seeming to shimmer with excitement and you reach into a pocket pulling out the amulet you had commissioned for her. Your voice is formal as you make the official request. "Lady Daenerys Targaryen, Stormborn, aunt, blood of my blood. I am your guardian and so have none to ask other than yourself, no father or uncle from whom to request this boon; but if you would accept my hand in marriage before the gods of our ancestors, I offer this as a symbol of my pledge."

Nalaehra watches impassively as Dany reaches out and slowly takes the amulet from you, looking over it closely, tracing her fingers along the decorative dragons embedded into the metal base. For an instant it catches a stray ray of light from the great flaming heart and glows with an inner light before it fades and again looks normal. You hear a slight intake of breath from Nalaehra, but when you glance over at her she merely shakes her head and smiles cryptically. Daenerys returns the amulet to your hand, surprising you and putting dread/fear/confusion into your suddenly rapidly pounding heart, before she turns her back to you and lifts her hair, asking you to clasp it around her neck. You realize that the idea that she would refuse now after waiting so patiently was foolish, smiling ruefully at your assumption, and reach across her, before locking the clasp shut. Once the amulet is secured, she turns and gives you the deepest kiss yet. She says nothing when it is finished, merely leaning into you in contentment.

Not quite knowing why, you shift your eyesight just so and you can see Daenerys' aura bleeding into the amulet which shines with the same colors of light that you saw earlier on the Temple of the Lord of Light. A tiny thread stretches out from the amulet, leading towards the temple, and you can see energy being pulled from the temple towards it. When you look once more at Nalaehra, she seems inordinately pleased. You aren't sure what exactly is going on, but Nalaehra is a follower of your gods, not the Lord of Light. You'll need to ask her about this later. Right now, Dany's mood is too good to be ruined.

The rest of the ride is spent with you explaining what each dragon symbolizes, and once you come to Viserys' representation, the both of you go quiet, hoping that you haven't seen the last of him.

Eventually you reach the walls of the Old City. A "ceremonial" guard stands before the entrance, with weapons that look far too practical and not at all as "ceremonial" as the position supposedly is. The wall is made of Black Stone, said to be unable to be recreated with the loss of the knowledge of Valyria, and the great gate that stands open has the ripples commonly seen in Valyrian Steel. You don't know if it is merely coated in Valyrian Steel, or if it is actually that mystical metal all the way through, but either way it is still more Valyrian Steel than exists in all the Seven Kingdoms. You have heard that the metal is much less precious here, being far more common in Essos, and you have indeed seen several people with weapons made from it in your travels, but this is still one of the greatest works known to man. A gate that is impregnable once shut, set into stone that only a Dragon could melt.

The gates of the Black City will never fall, they can only be climbed, or taken before the gate can be shut. Without dragons in the world to melt the stone or the gates, nothing will be hot enough or strong enough. 'Of course,' you realize. 'This is perfect. If I can take this city...' A place only assailable by dragons, what safer location could there be for you to raise your own? Anywhere in the world you would have to fear enemies both where you are, as well as outside. But here in Volantis the only enemy you will have to fear is that within. And if you play your cards right, not even there.

Your arms are around Daenerys, but your mind is on the future.

I'm in the states, but still looking for a place to live and trying to find a car to buy. The hotel I'm in has a computer for me to use, which is how this came about, but I obviously don't have time to write every day. Updates will be sporadic while I get settled. Anyway, next segment - Vaermon's house. Make a vote of what the top five topics you want to discuss with him are.

[] Topics to discuss with Vaermon.
-[] Order: 1. Write-in 2. Write-in 3. Write-in 4. Write-in 5. Write-in

You might not get to discuss all five, so remember, the order matters! Top is the most important, bottom is the least. Also, consider what kind of home you all want. Remember what was inside the black walls?

[] Dragonlord Property
-[] Priority: 1. Tower 2. Palace 3. Temple 4. Cloister 5. Courtyard 6. Cellar

I'm going to roll a D6 and see what is there for the Dragonlord. Whatever number comes up is how many of those six options are on the property. If a six happens you get all six on the property, but anything less and you only get that number. So again order matters! Put what you want on your property in order from top to bottom. In the array as I have it above, if you roll a four, your home will not have a courtyard or a cellar. So plan it out. If you have questions about what the various "modules" can do, discuss it here in the forum and I might chime in and drop some info. But I'd like to see what you all think the different additions can be used for first.

If I get less than a 6 on the d6, I'll allow you all to use a 20 to force a re-roll. If no one does, the number stays. You can do this multiple times. However! You must use the latest number, whatever it is. So if you roll a four, you can keep trying to roll a 6 and get them all, but if you run out of 20s and the last roll was a 2, you end up with less than you started.

Also, long-term and short-term goals need to be fleshed out. You can always change these after every segment, updating them with the new information that you received, but having general ideas of them helps me write the quest. I want to start giving you guys more control over the direction of the quest rather than having you just react to what I throw at you. Give me goals to work towards. Short term = The current month. Long term = 3-6 months. Generalities are probably better for long term for now.

I'd rate the temple as the most important for us, honestly. A huge amount of our political power in Volantis is going to be based on our undeniable connection to the gods of the Freehold.

I'm honestly not sure if it or the Palace is more important. Both have political importance. The temple is a thing, but then so is normally being impressive. And you need a lot of space to host guests and whatnot... Depends how you guys do things really which turns out be to be the most necessary.

I'll come forward with this plan. Thoughts appreciated.

Edit.

-[X] An overview of some of the more important cultural norms and traditions in the city, applying to nobility and dragonlords such as ourselves.
-[X] The current Triarchs, and some of the more prominent players in the political field.
-[X] Anyone who might be...unhappy with the emergence of a fresh source of Dragon Blood in the city (basically, who might be upset at our arrival).
-[X] The current knowledge of the Faith, and how it is doing in the city compared to other prominent religions.
-[X] The best way to start growing ourinfluence in the city, in his opinion.

I feel like this is an appropriate layout of importance.

Edit: Here is my reasoning:
-Palace is first b/c it is both a place for us and our servants to live in and an important symbol of power and prestige among the upper class. To not have even this would give them an undeserved sense of superiority over us, and might make things more difficult for us.
-Temple is second because we are Chosen of the Dragon-Gods. We are the Avatars they chose to help return their might to the world and returning them to prominence among the lands. We need somewhere to both honor and commune with them.
-Tower is third because, honestly, it's impressive and I want one. Plus, it never hurts to have somewhere to post lookouts and guards, even if we're within the Walls. Don't forget what we did to Thomas before we left. Subterfuge is something we need to watch out for.
And, depending on the size of the tower, we could use it as a landing area for out Dragons if/when they hatch, at least for a while.
-Courtyard was 5th but is now 4th b/c I think it could be more useful, both as a training/gathering area and as somewhere to land our dragons until they get too big for it.
-I switched Cloister to 5th b/c I'm not entirely clear on what a Cloister is and from what I do understand it seems like it needs a courtyard to be useful, so no sense in having a Cloister with no courtyard.
-Cellar is 6th because it's basically just extra storage space. Useful, but not more than anything else on this list. And we can most likely have a cellar built at a later date if we want to.

-[X] 5. The best way to start growing our influence in the city, in his opinion.

And I think these are the topics that we should look into; get an idea of the political situation in the city, learn some of the more important cultural things we'll need to follow and watch out for, and get an idea of where and how to start growing our power base and where to look for allies.

See Armadilo's post below for a few details I missed.

I would like to make a point that the cloister may give us more than the tower. Inside the Black Walls there are no threats of invasion so heavily fortified places are kinda useless here. On another note the Cloister can give us a place to walk with guests and even make deals.

Palace is a must, it's our actual residence. Temple also high priority considering our whole 'chosen of the gods' thing. A courtyard for big gatherings (and as a large open space for dragons to lounge).

I think a cloister is just a fancy hallway so not a huge priority. A cellar is good for storage but not much else (unless I'm missing something). Towers are nice and all, but what practical use does it serve us right now?

Sounds good to me.

Perhaps we should also ask him if he knows someone who could act as our cultural guide on a more regular basis. It could be rolled into step one.

Step three should maybe specify those that were wronged by Viserys while he was here.

Why can't everyone be this detailed? Seriously. It would make me so much happier. (And thus the fic so much easier for you all.)

The dragonglass in Dany's amulet seems to be triggering something. Vaermon mentioned that Dragonlord incest has significant religious meaning, so perhaps we've triggered that with a dragonglass engagement present. Nalaehra seems to know what happened. Perhaps Dany is leeching power from the LoL temple? It's interesting that the connection goes there and not to the Valyrian temple, but it probably just means the Valyrian temple's connection to the gods has been broken/interrupted by a lack of Dragonlords.

Eh, some of one, less of the other. Good guesses though. Have a 20.

...I can go back and put in why I ranked the house-stuff where it is if you want. But I think Armadilo has already covered the stuff I missed question-wise.
I've said this before but why's are always better than no why's. Even if someone else already listed the reasons, the more people seem to wan it, the greater the chance it might make it into the story.

Alms, Alms for the poor!
(Anyone want to donate a 20 to a Grace Pool? They are automatic saving throws for the quest.)

Haven't done one of these in a while. But once more unto the breach.

20s can be used on any vote. Multiple can be used on the same vote if it requires a d100. They are added as modifiers to the roll. Using 5 will equal instant success on a d100 roll.

Five d20s can be traded to force a 1 on an enemy of your choice.
