[X] Road trip! May's had her license, and there was an anime con in Baltimore she wanted to go. She didn't want to go alone, so she invited you along. You didn't particularly care for anime, but you were excited to be excited about her thing!

Lensman!
And Liv picks a character from Science Ninja Gatchaman/ Battle of the Planets

Someone beat me to it, but spelljammer?
Maybe a spelljammer/sigil cross that ties in all settings in a passable way so they can have Infinite Seasons the anime

Oh man, Lensman would actually be perfect. Obscure but awesome semi-superhero work, blatantly optimistic, could be easily adapted to fit current cultural stuff, and sick merchandising opportunities.

Ahh, so you don't need advice. I'm sorry, I thought it was so incorrigibly obscure in this day and age that any paraordinary person, however worthy, would need a run-down. :p

Though if you go with this, the glowy costume Lens needs to only work when May is wearing it. It just knows. Somehow. Liv can find a way. I have faith.

[slight inner squee at idea]
Oh hey I remember reading those!

...and now I remember the weird B-plot where there was the Same Guy failing to romance the Same Girl, every book until like the last one! Which was...weird!

[X] This weekend, you and her were jumping on your bikes and going up the North County Trailway. A lovely and very long ride as far out as you could go, just the two of you, out of the city and into some trees. You're looking forward to it!

Uh, I don't think anyone has mentioned it yet, so I just want to point out that Liv is not currently comfortable having sex, and I don't think she's actually said that to May yet. If they go to the anime con, May and Liv will have a room (possibly) all to themselves, so... that will probably start an awkward conversation.

I'm assuming that the bike trip isn't an overnight thing.

Also, cons are exhausting, especially when you aren't really into them. I'm not sure we want to throw a stressful weekend at Liv right now. (also... I think the moral of the last thread was that Liv can't do everything at once.)

Okay, but counterpoint. Sleeping means the possibility of waking up as Athene which sounds interesting to me.

I was thinking that the obvious default would be a Captain America costume. It does have the obvious drawback, and vibranium is a hassle to get, but maybe Cap is worth it? Ehh, probably too soon...

I wonder if there's a song about Captain America's mighty shield in this universe, too...

OBVIOUSLY

not sure who yet. what even is the big anime of 2030?

(other than One Piece)
Actually, it turns out that around 2026 there was a big Anime scandal when Studio Ghibli, which had been struggling after a tragic fire in 2024 that hit their primary animating studio, destroyed one of their productions as it was being made, as well as severely injuring several employees, was put out to sell by Madman entertainment. However, due to the love of the franchise by so many, it was crowdfunded and bought by an artistic group, and has since become a private studio.

It's produced a number of smaller animated series, lacking the backing to make feature-length productions as it used to, but Miyazaki himself came out of retirement for a couple years to help keep the creative vision and standards of excellence alive for the fledgling company. As such, its most recent animation about a planeswalking Samurai who is travelling different dimensions in search of his home and his Lord based on traditional Shinto myths has gained a massive following, despite its pseudo-schlock presentation.

It also has produced a smaller, 10-episode series following a young girl with synesthesia that struggles to make sense of a world where sounds are colors, as well as a rather seasonal story of a space opera merchant freighter that more or less is an homage to Cowboy Bebop, exploring similar themes if from a different perspective.

In general, though, the Studio is doing its best to function without the support base of a larger, more-established company, and it's doing a remarkable job so far even if their catalog is limited (Madman Entertainment caught some flak for keeping the rights to all previous Ghibli works)

I think that there's probably just some really good snuggly snuggling in their future. If they haven't even gotten in bed yet I doubt they'd jump straight to sex.
Oh, also.

*Laughs in Russian*
Russia as a whole is big, but isn't the eastern ninety percent of the country entirely empty? My general impression is that all the historically relevant stuff is within like 4 hours of the western border.

Er. You could saaaay that. You would be wrong, but you could. :V

The distance between St. Petersburg and Moscow, two largest cities of the country, is longer than the distance from the eastern border of Germany to the western, just for comparison.

The distance from the town I was born in to Moscow is as long as the distance from Warsaw to Paris. My hometown is in Europe.

Like, if you are talking about the Golden Ring of Russia, it'll take you two weeks to cover it, if you actually want to do some sightseeing together with the travel time.

It should be noted that IRL studio ghibli essentially does not exist. it's a theme park and a handful of artists working part time with Miyazaki on his final film, which he looks unlikely to complete.

Aren't they doing things with 3d animation now. They're supposed to release that movie in December.

Which brings us to the future of Anime. Disney took over and everything is life action adaptions.

Oh right. forgot about that. it kinda came outta nowhere, i'll have to look into that more

Lensman WOULD sort of fit the mood even, the Triplanetary backstory was humanity sobering up a hell of a lot after they saw just how much fuck up they've done IIRC.
Oh yes. And one of the criteria for the Lens is incorruptibility. There's no such thing as a dirty or crooked Lensman
Little did you know that among my teenage nerderies was Lensmans...
And Triplanetary and First Lensman are freely available on Project Gutenberg.

Arduino and RFID or IR links. Doable now, but also a lot of work.

"This is Free Trader Beowulf calling Highport, come in Highport..."

I often imagine Cap having been a fan.

There's a massive crossover fic on SB where one of the more glorious moments involves the protagonist assembling a huge teamup to help Harry Dresden out of a jam, and there's a moment there where Dresden stares at the protagonist, his jaw dropping, and says "you recruited Captain America!?"

I once imagined this recursing, and having Captain America, a bit later on, turn to the protagonist, his jaw dropping, and saying "you recruited Kimball Kinnison?" Would have made sense to bring him along, had the author thought of it and been so inclined.

This iteration of Cap would have a relationship with the original Doc Smith text I cannot begin to analyze, but there having been a decent Lensman anime some time in the 2020s in this timeline just works for me on multiple levels. Dunno.

Meh, screw it. I don't pretend to know what goes on in corporations. I just like the movies. Anime ideas are still valid, as far as I'm concerned.

Where's the fic though? Where is it? Is it good?
