I personally think that the soul we had when we were once alive is converted into ectoplasm when we become a ghost which is the reason why when we die in ghost form it temporally acts as a soul.

Aand also upon dying, if you're killed so hard you just die instead of letting the body take the hit, the sarcapholeum is still destroyed, as the body is ruined along with the self for death to happen...
