Yeah these probably are village guards who won't let us pass until Shrub tells them to.

guys, they are not with shrub, they are red ghosts.
shrub said that the ghosts frequently harm his people in their endless wars
and since ghosts don't stay dead, if things go bad we would be both making an enemy and providing them the name of an ally to hunt down (shrub and his village)

Hmm, an ominous conclusion. Though I think you're being a little paranoid - Shrub has "only ever battles ghosts (no specification on colour) about three times".
They're harmed by: "Whenever a spy appears, some of us are broked cause then a soldier squad comes around and messes stuff up." So not too worried about these guys randomly wandering around to kill Shrub and his village, but them being Red Ghosts is a possibility (I think if they were though, they probably would've attacked first, and they seem too mechanical/not uniformly red like we are to be Ghosts just possessing stuff).
(Also, the Ordgrown seem to have a similar respawn mechanic to Ghosts - 'regrowing is coming back from being broken'.)

Unless our possession works somehow diffirently than normal - wich I doubt - these are not Ghosts In Combat Exoskeletons, but something diffirent entirely. Also, they´re asking questions instead of instantly attacking. Not something you do upon sighting an enemy combatant.

Diplomacy should be tried first - but if it doesn't work, we shouldn't leave just yet. It's quite possible that these red guys are the trouble that Shrub was worried about.
