[X] The debris field
[X] Shoot Dekim in the knee, then punch him in the face and take him into custody

[X] The Colony Gundams

[X] Shoot Dekim but deliberately miss, almost hitting him in the head, before taking Mariemaia

Better to bring him in, he likely has intel we need.

Just a reminder to those people doing my write-in

Shooting someone in the leg may be 'less lethal' than shooting people in other places, but it is still very dangerous, and there is a chance of him bleeding out.

*This has been post 1am me, noting a weakness in a plan that normal me missed*

[X] The Colony Gundams
[X] Shoot Dekim in the knee, then punch him in the face and take him into custody
Do we really want to kill someone in front of Marameia?

Not closing voting yet, just posting a self-reminder:

Drinking game: take a shot every time I take a potshot at Battletech, Gundam AGE, or Macross Delta

Maybe, maybe not, but I absolutely loathe Battletech super fans who hold it up as the pinnacle of 'realistic' mech designs.

These are the people who will deride all Japanese mech media as 'unrealistic', and not have a response beyond seething when you point out that the original design for the Warhammer (one of Battletech's most iconic mechs, it's the cover mech for one of the earliest editions) is almost literally lifted wholesale from Macross.

Like, there's this one youtuber I hate (SCIENCE INSANITY, yes, the username is in all caps) who did a video on different mech types, and he lumped ALL JAPANESE MECH ANIME into pure 'rule of cool' and implicitly derided it for that. He cites, of ALL THINGS, the scene from Destiny Gundam where the Akatsuki Gundam tanks a positron beam for the Archangel. (I'm not linking the video because I refuse to give his channel views)

Science Insanity, you ignorant bastard, Gundam in general STARTED the trend of hard sci-fi mechs. Gundam Seed Destiny may have its WTF moments, but it's CONSISTENT (most of the time) when it comes to its (soft) hard sci-fi concepts. Also original Gundam and Gundam Seed give justification for why all combat is so close range (Minovsky Particles/N-Jammers). I don't think Battletech ever does?

Anyway, you're not going to be fighting the Clans in endgame, but there will be a lot of trash-talk about Battletech's story and unnecessarily dark tone after the Clan Invasion.

As someone who literally grew up playing Mechwarrior 2: 31st Century Combat on my dad's knee (and played a Battletech character in an old SRW Journal RP), I've got fond feelings for the franchise...

...and firmly believe that fans of Battletech who deride other mecha franchises as "unrealistic" are completely missing the point of the whole genre (while also missing out on some good shows/games due to their snobbery).

I don't think it's worth keeping Dekim alive, since if he's alive, that means he could become a threat once more in the future. Best to kill him now and be done with Wing's plot.

Yeah i agree If you really want something realistic go play GURPS

I suspect that most Battletech fans who turn their noses up at other mecha franchises cling to that "but muh realism" viewpoint because of insecurity.

Fans like those, I think, have internalized the viewpoint that "stronger is better." The grounded "walking tank" aesthetic of Battlemechs makes them come across as "weak" compared to the average mid-season upgrade Gundam, let alone a Buster Machine or a Gurren Lagann. These fans don't want to think that their favorite giant robots are "weak," so they use bad faith "realism" arguments to put down mechs from other media as a defense mechanism.

But as any nuanced fan of Dragonball Z knows, "power levels are bulls**t." If Chirico Cuvie, pilot of the dinkiest mecha of all time, can do this in an SRW game, then BT fans should never have to worry about their mechs being irrelevant in a crossover scenario.

Plus in SRW 0 Delta, the idea of Battlemechs being involved in any practical capacity got shot down pretty quickly, including by at least one avowed Battletech fan because the vast majority of Real Robots in the quest would be engaging in high-speed mech battles and ever-increasing speeds, especially with reactionless MS drives becoming more commonplace. The Exia can easily flank and cut down even a Grasshopper for example. Destroids on the other hand have a pretty solid niche in heavy fire support with the König Monster being the end goal. But yeah, with Gundam timelines being jumped around as SRW does, no way in hell an Atlas can stand up against the V2 Gundam and Destiny Gundam.

I honesty disagree with that perspective.

To be more precise, I don't disagree with the idea that there are fictional mechs with abilities that would hard counter the "slow, heavily armored, and lots of weapons" design most classic Battlemechs have.

I do disagree with the idea that a SRW RP participant with a Battletech PC would be useless and unable to do cool stuff. Even if a Battlemech is lower on the "power scale," a PC with a normal Battlemech can still do stuff like narrate clever tactics, take heroic risks, maximize teamwork, and try to play to the strengths of a Battlemech's walking tank archetype (like what you mentioned with the Destroids/König Monster and fire support).

Alternately or additionally, they can collaborate with the GM and other players to figure out cool "mid-season" upgrades for their Battlemech that give them just enough of a power-up to stay relevant without stripping away what makes a Battlemech a Battlemech.

[Edit: or uncork the weird stuff from early Battletech lore such as Phantom Mech phenomena or LAMs]

If Batman can still be useful in a Justice League comic while still being explicitly "weaker" than Superman, then a Battletech PC can still do cool things in an SRW game as long as the player (and the player group) isn't being toxic about it.

...or that's my opinion, at least. I don't mind if you disagree with my disagreeing, berani00. :)

Glad to see more discussion at levels not seen since the...creation of the thread.

(Man, time flies)

Anyway, vote closed, update to come tomorrow.

No problem. Battlemechs are definitely cool and it'd be cool to see somebody get those to work in such a setting (And have in SRW GS on Mars where the Armored Core and IBO stuff is also happening) and I'm not a design purist either. I just forgot that arms races don't count for shit in SRW and reasonably thought Battlemechs would be too much like tanks when every other design is like a gunship.

Barge, the Thunderbolt Sector

You are Heero Yuy, and as you decapitate an enemy Serpent with a beam saber, you suddenly receive a premonition courtesy of the ZERO System.

Lucia's announcement over the comms confirms it a few seconds later.

"Everyone watch out, Barge is firing!" She warns.

"What's it targeting?" Duo asks.

"Uh...the surrounding debris field?" Lucia says in confusion.

You all parse that bit of information for a few seconds before coming to a realization.

"Tell the ships to scatter, immediately!" A Jegan pilot exclaims.

Barge's main cannon fires an enormous beam into the surrounding debris field. You immediately realize it's not targeting the ships themselves, but the debris they're hiding behind. Barge then proceeds to sweep its beam across the debris field in an impromptu clean-up operation of the Thunderbolt Sector, leaving most of your ships exposed.

The effect this has on the direction of the battle is immediate, with numerous Barton Foundation Mobile Dolls and mobile suits rushing at the vulnerable fleet formation.

"Fall back to protect the ships!" An OZ pilot yells while transforming his Taurus to mobile armor form to get to the ships faster.

Within Barge's command center, Dekim Barton sneers at Treize Khushrenada even as the latter holds him at gunpoint.

Whatever confidence there was in Dekim's face disappears as a gunshot rings out, Dekim bringing his hands to his chest in shock.

Dekim Barton collapses to the floor, bleeding from single gunshot wound to his chest.

"Under the current circumstances, you can only be seen as a traitor to mankind." Treize states as he puts the safety of his pistol back on and holsters it.

Mariemaia stares at the rapidly cooling body of her grandfather for a second before looking at Treize nervously.

"Come, Mariemaia. This is no place for you." Treize says as he gestures to his daughter.

Mariemaia nervously steps forward and flinches when Treize raises his hand. To her surprise, he gives her an affectionate pat on the side of the head before placing it on her shoulder protectively.

"I would highly recommend you evacuate." Treize says to the command staff of Barge.

With that, Treize and the OZ pilots leave, with Mariemaia in tow.

You are Mira Ayana, and as you destroy a trio of Taurus Mobile Dolls with the Rose's Energy Whip, you see the Tallgeese II and its escorts come back out of Barge's hangar.

"How'd it go, sir?" You ask as you fall in formation with Treize's squad.

"About as well as expected. Dekim Barton is dead. What happened while we were in there?" Treize asks.

"Barge fired its main cannon into the debris field. We've lost a few ships since then, and we've been trying to keep things under control." You say.

"Hm. I'll have to have Lady Une send me the crew manifests of those ships we've lost, in addition to the names of the other casualties we've taken this battle." Treize says mournfully.

"So, what do we do about Barge?" Zechs asks.

"Frankly, the station is an eyesore, and there are only so many large scale projects we can keep maintained in preparation for the Council's arrival. I believe those among Barge's crew who see reason will have evacuated by now. Ah, there they are." Treize says, pointing out numerous shuttles suddenly exiting Barge's hangars. "Give it a bit, and then we can destroy it."

You wait a few minutes, and true to Treize's prediction, the flow of evacuation shuttle stops shortly after. Despite this, several of the station's secondary weapons are still firing, and the main cannon begins to charge again.

"So, who wants to take a crack at it?" Noin asks.

"This feels like a 'you' thing, Zechs." You say.

"Very well." Zechs says, giving a mock-bow with the Epyon before charging at Barge.

The Epyon moves up to the viewport of Barge's command center before drawing its beam saber.

"The likes of you don't belong in space!" Zechs yells, bringing the Epyon's beam saber down.

The Epyon proceeds to carve through not only Barge's command center, but also part of the main superstructure, as Zechs maneuvers his Gundam across the width of the battle station.

After Zechs cuts through a large section of Barge, he jets away, and Barge explodes in a flash of yellow.

The explosion obviously catches the attention of everyone on the battlefield, and Treize decides to capitalize on this moment.

"Attention, all Barton Foundation forces. Dekim Barton is dead. I have Mariemaia in custody, and Barge is destroyed. I would advise all of you to surrender." He declares over an open frequency.

As if to emphasize Treize's point, all of the Barton Foundation's few remaining Mobile Dolls shut down, all of their command nodes having been destroyed alongside Barge.

All of the Barton Foundation's remaining forces surrender after that, no one even attempting to make a break for the wider Thunderbolt Sector.

Aboard the Peacemillion

You exit the Rose and stretch your arms before reaching back in to help Yukari get out.

As Nina helps Lucia out of her seat, you hear a small commotion coming from the floor of the hangar.

You and the girls get down to see a small crowd congregating around the Tallgeese II as Treize exits it along with his daughter, Mariemaia.

You start in alarm when you see Lady Une walk out of the crowd, her hair down and wearing a suit.

Oh, this might get ugly. You think to yourself.

Mariemaia flinches as Lady Une raises her hand, only open her eyes in surprise as Une gently pats her on the head. You let out a sigh of relief that you didn't realize you were holding in. Mariemaia tears up before clinging to Lady Une's leg.

"So, care to explain?" You ask Treize as Lady Une leads Mariemaia away.

"The result of an...indiscretion early in my military career. I didn't know she existed until that announcement you all heard, but it was easy to put things together after that." Treize explains.

You nod in understanding.

RESULTS

The Barton Foundation has been pacified.
Those who have surrendered will receive amnesty after serving in penal units against the inevitable Council invasion.
Higher than anticipated losses among ships during this operation means that the EFF and Zeon will not be able to contribute as many ships during the Gundam Seed finale.
Barge has been destroyed, but considering existing superweapon assets (Damocles, the rebuilt Gryps II Colony Laser) it's not considered a significant loss.
Mariemaia Khushrenada is under the guardianship of Lady Une and Treize. Lady Une seems surprisingly okay with being a maternal figure to Treize's illegitimate daughter.

You have some time before the anticipated clash between Blue Cosmos and ZAFT.

You've also been meaning to talk with Lelouch.

Conveniently, the Black Knights are sending up everything they can spare to help in the coming battle.

Where do you talk with him?

[ ] Aboard the Ikaruga, at the designated rally point

[ ] Aboard the Eternal, after a joint meeting between the ship captains and major leaders

[ ] Over a video call to the Ikaruga, with you aboard the Archangel

What do you talk about?

[ ] Write-in.

KEEP VOTES SEPARATE

A/N: Sorry if it seems like I cut things short, but honestly, there was no way the Barton Foundation wouldn't have folded after you killed Dekim. If you opted to kneecap him, I would have rolled for him not to bleed out (Dekim IS and old man, after all). If you had spared him, Treize would have left Dekim to die aboard Barge as Zechs destroyed it. Please vote, discuss, and critique!

Well as always that is how things end with Wing.

At least they are more hopeful than the canon endings for certain people.

Still sad we lost so many ships.

Otherwise.

Feel like the eternal is just the perfect place to talk with Lelouch over this stuff, we are dealing with pretty much the end stages of SEED and another possible full scale war between naturals and cordinators thanks to both sides toomfolery.

Dunno at the moment what to talk about tho.

I do not remember right now.

I'm partial towards the Ikaruga, and definitely against a phone call. More polite to have conversations with geniuses in person.
