In fairness, Ronald D. Moore also believed he would think of a resolution to the unresolved plot threads introduced in seasons 1 and 2 of Battlestar Galactica.

Although honestly I think saucer separation as an emergency feature could make sense for a lot of Federation starships, given the saucer generally has its own impulse power, it's a pretty great lifeboat. But I think this would purely be a an evacuation feature in case of a warp core breach, not intended to have the tactical applications ascribed to it for the Galaxy or (may God forgive me for uttering this) Prometheus classes.

I'm not surprised that it's the nacelles that are consistently the problem. They're probably one of the two most complex pieces of technology on the ship, and we pick the most cutting edge advanced options with them. Of course they're going to have issues. However, each time there is an issue Yoyodine has learned from it, and soon the fix gets implemented and the new nacelles become standard issue.

Which is the perfect time for us to pick up the new prototype, and start the cycle all over again. :V

[X] USS Voyager. These ships will be some of the furthest from Federation space, making discoveries to their name.

the wiki has this about it?
Ronald D. Moore stated that he believed Voyager had a detachable saucer section.

Interesting idea, given that Voyager had no impulse engines on it's saucer section. Also most of its weapons. And a single contigous plate running from the back of the saucer to the mid-engineering section.

So I don't really believe him. Sounds like a "yeah sure, it could have" to a question to me.

It was the era before having a solid idea of a multi-season plot. Remember we were denied a whole-season Year of Hell, or any consistent upgrades/damage to Voyager. Even when they got whole chunks of hull ripped off in some episodes.

In fairness, RDM did develop a really solid multi-season plot for Battlestar Galactica, with a whole Series Bible and everything... it just ended essentially at the end of Season 2. Before nBSG began airing, he never actually came up with answers to what the Cylon Plan was supposed to be, or what it would look like on a Cylon Basestar. Although some of things considered in the series bible are definitely interesting - there's a suggestion that Cylons constantly exist in both a digital and physical world, so being on a Cylon Basestar is kind of like being in the Matrix as well as walking around. Definitely more interesting than just sticking your hands in glowy water.

It's interesting when you look back at interviews how much of nBSG was influenced by his frustrations as a writer on Voyager, including being unable to do all of the things that you mention there. As well as the more memed-upon stuff like character development being expressly forbidden by production.

Voyager will likely get home sooner... but might have to figure out a solution for the exploding nacelles given how often they have to run away as fast as they can and still barely escape with 9.975 being max safe velocity.
