Finish the Freigter!
"Ah, Dovar, come over here." You looked up from the plate filled with some expensive-looking cookies to where your father was standing. Next to him, you saw a man with a constant scowl on his face and uncomfortable looking in his gala uniform. Somehow, you felt as if you should have had a name for the man next to your father, but you couldn't recall it as you moved closer. "This is my son, Dovar Frox. He is the head of our design department, in fact, it was his idea to form such a department! Thanks to him, I'm even aware of the need for corvettes, so to speak. My dear son, this is Quarsh Panaka. Formerly captain of the queen's guard of Naboo, he is the newly-appointed Minister of Defense from Naboo. Minister, this is my son, Dovar Frox."

"My pleasure, Minister." You smiled as you shook the hand of Minister Panaka, who returned the gesture but didn't change his facial expression. It seems he wasn't a fan of dinner parties, and you noticed how his eyes continued to scan the other guests as if he was looking for assassins. This wasn't a great surprise now that you knew who he was.

"Mister Frox. Your father mentioned you were planning on expanding Vulkan's business to military hardware. Light warships to be more precise."

You frowned a bit and gave your father a look, who only sent a smile back to you. "I was planning to come up with a basic hull with engines and a cockpit or bridge, more a case study to be honest. The idea was to use these as a base and expand from there to whatever ship the customer wishes. I noticed that most other yards only offer complete ships with few possible modifications in the configuration before shipping. CEC is known for the ease with which its ships can be modified. But that means extensive work for the customer after the purchase. My idea is that we provide the base model, and the customer then tells us what they want on the ship. It's a niche that is mostly ignored by the big companies."

"A wise decision." For the first time, you had Minister Panaka's full attention. His continuous scanning for danger stopped as he concentrated on you. "And one that will make your ship interesting for smaller forces. As you may know, my world has recently tasted war, and we don't wish to do so again. But even after this, our population doesn't wish for a major expansion of the military force. But they could agree on a limited one. How fast could you come up with this base model of yours?"

You suddenly felt your lips dry as you realized the honesty in the minister's words, even if you were surprised by his bluntness. Considering that you hadn't even started with the whole base model, you could only guess when you could come up with a prototype plan. After a moment, you answered:

[ ] "Three to four months, if we press hard." (Frame)
[ ] "Five to six months, that should give us enough time to run some simulations." (Frame and Engine)
[ ] "Seven to eight months at least, anything less and I wouldn't trust it." (Frame, Engine, and Cockpit)

"I see." Minister Panake didn't seem to be happy about your answer but accepted it. "The sooner you can present it to me, the better. I'm a representative of a larger group of planets interested in such a ship but who wish to avoid the bignames. And before you ask, I can't give you names but rest assured, we need these ships and would be happy if you could supply us with them. The sooner, the better."

On your face was a grin that felt as if it would split your skull at any moment. It was the biggest grin you had ever had on your face, you were sure about it. But you had a very good reason for it, and when you looked around at the other people standing around, you noticed that you weren't the only one with such a grin. All around you in the crowd, you could see others of your team grinning in the same way or doing their species' equivalent. Then your attention returned to the reason for the grin.

There on the hangar floor, stood the prototype of your freighter. It still hadn't been given a class name yet and was still simply called VSY-Mk. I (Prototype), but it was real, built by the workers of the shipyard. The construction had been approved by yourself after the final round of simulations had come up with no significant problems for the third time. Since then, some small issues had been reported and removed by the workers who put the prototype together. Now it stood ready for the first batch of test flights that had been planned.

After another moment of pure adoration for the ship you helped create, you turned to your team and clapped your hands. "Alright, people! Now that we actually have a prototype to work on, I say we take another look at the plans. I'm sure that we've overlooked some errors. I want them found and removed as soon as possible. The first test flight happens in three days, let's give the test pilot the best ship we can!"

All around you, cheers erupted from the crowd of engineers walking away in small groups or standing together, directly beginning to discuss how to improve the prototype. You turned to the two people you have heavily relied on during the projects. This was, of course, Pinagg and Shen, both of them standing nearby.

>>It pleases me to see the ship finished. Even if it is just a prototype, it still feels great to look at our work. To be able to touch it.<< Pinagg's own words were nothing more but clicking to your human ears, but the way he behaved made it clear how pleased the engineer was. He pointed towards the ship with his walking stick. >>We should concentrate on reducing the price a bit more, if you ask me.<<

"Or we could concentrate on the speed of this baby." Shen was looking at the ship with love in his eyes as he spoke up. "I know, we decided not to play with the NovaQuads, but we can do a few things to boost the top speed possible."

>>Another possibility is that we concentrate on reducing smaller errors and overall finish off the ship as best as possible. I know it might not seem like much, but the customer will be thankful when he buys the ship and doesn't need to worry about a thousand small problems that he first needs to fix. Not that the ship is full of them, as we all know. But I think you get what I mean.<<

Running out of Good Names for these ...
"You wanted to see me?"

Your father looked up from his pad and nodded as you entered his office. Behind him through the window, you can see Temaris and parts of the shipyards owned by your family. Without asking, you sat down on one of the chairs before your father's desk.

"Yes, I wanted to talk to you about the Vulkan Freighter," he said with a weak smile. "You did good work there, son. Not just your Department, but as the head of the new Department as well. It is a starting point, but we will need a better performance if we want to survive the current crisis."

"What do you mean? They took the freighter, right?"

"Oh, they did, but not before threatening us with a lawsuit for not meeting the stated requirements. I had to give Far & Wide Trade a bulk discount that cost us some revenue, but you aren't to blame for this." Your father's face grew cold for a moment. He stared over your head at something invisible before he snapped out of his mood. "Rest assured that we won't do business with those sleemos again. The only saving grace is that we start to sell them to private persons. Not in huge numbers, but some local traders show interest, most of them have brought their old ships for an overhaul and now see these brand new ships standing around everywhere..."

Your father grinned like a Hutt who just made the deal of his life. After a moment, he continued, "That is one of the reasons I wanted to see you. Marketing is fairly sure that they can push up sales in the coming months. Especially if we can push down the price for production or push up the speed even more. Apparently, those are the most critical points that discourage people from buying the ship. To make it short, we need a Vulkan Mk. II sooner than later. Can you spare one of your teams for this?"

"That would weaken our team, not something I like, so close to the start of the corvette project."

"So, is that a no?"

You thought about it for a moment before you answered.

[ ] "Well, yes, it is. At the moment, I can't spare any of my people. Maybe later."
[ ] "Pinagg should do it. He is an expert in cost reduction, I think he can push the production cost down a bit."
[ ] "Shen should do it. He is young and wishes to prove the trust I put into him was justified."

Your father nodded. "All right then."

Corvette Frame
Company Information has been Updated!

Pinagg began his work immediately after you assigned it to him. He picked a few of the minor members of your department to help him with the Mk. II model. A name that had come from the marketing department, and one you all found hilarious as it was basically a total lie. Anyhow, his work took some time, but in the end, his Genosian mind came up with several ways to push down production cost. Surprisingly, only a few of them were related to the design itself. The biggest improvements were found on the production lines, with several suggested changes that lowered the overall costs for building a single ship. This not only helped with the Light Freighter, but also the overall performance of your company.

Vulkan Light Freighter Mk. I -> Vulkan Light Freighter Mk.II (-2 Cost)
Vulkan Shipyards gain Trait: Efficient Production Line (-1 Cost on total Ship cost)

Sadly, his side project took some time and energy, so he couldn't help with the first phase of the corvette project that started around the same time. But thanks to the suggested and implemented changes in the company's production line and the slight changes in the ship itself, the sales numbers had taken an upswing. The Vulkan Light, as many started to call it, had quickly become a regular sight in the Sector.

Thanks to the Vulkan Light Freighter's growing success and the modifications made by Pinagg, your father even gave you extra money to get some additions to your department. After some thoughts and a small meeting with both Pinagg and Shen, you decided to request a simulator for performance tests. One that wasn't almost forty years old and had the newest data on how ships and their compartments behaved during all kinds of maneuvers. It would help test materials and parts significantly more thoroughly before feeding it to the great simulator and hopefully reduce the number of flaws that could carry over into the final design.

The day it was delivered and installed, you all gathered around it like a bunch of giant kids. Grinning madly, you began to test how well the simulator worked together with the team. This was done by running several crazy experiments on the simulator – they got more outlandish the longer the day went on. Tomorrow you would use it properly, but today was play day!

"I can't believe they got away with that! They invaded a peaceful world, starved the civilian population, were condemned by the Senate, and could still keep their weapons?" You shook your head and looked to your father in the hope of an explanation. The older man sipped on his drink and didn't seem as shocked as you felt after hearing the Senate's decision to not disarm the Trade Federation. "What kind of justice is this?"

"A political one, my son. You see, the Senate might have voted for disarming the Trade Federation if the Naboo hadn't called in pirates and mercenaries to help them out. Now half the core worlds fear an uproar of criminal activities in the Mid Rim sponsored by scared local governments. And the other half don't like the shakeup of the status quo. Before Naboo, most Mid Rim worlds were happy enough to leave most of the defense actions be taken care of by the Judicial or Core World forces they called on."

"And that changed after Naboo?"

"Of course, the Trade Federation not only pressured Naboo, they blockaded and even invaded the world! And the Republic did nothing to help them, not with the Judicial or some Core World forces. Only the Jedi helped some, but that was it. Naboo had to free itself. That has changed how we Mid Rimmers see the galaxy, it's suddenly much grimmer and scarier than before. The population wishes for assurance such a thing can't happen again, so the governments pour more money into the System Defense Forces. And they start buying weapons wherever they can find them. The Core suddenly sees a Mid Rim arming up, which changes the status quo on a grand scale. Even if most SDF's can't afford the heavy stuff like the Core can, Naboo has shown the galaxy that you don't need that purse if you have the right commanders. They see the Trade Federation as a natural counter to a suddenly more military Mid Rim. As long as our forces and the Trade Federation stare down at each other, the Core doesn't have to worry about us. Because nothing changes."

You slowly nodded as you understood the cutthroat logic behind your father's argument, even if you didn't like it one bit. This new situation was just asking to turn into another Naboo – if not a real war.

Why couldn't the Core see that?

Or did they and they... just didn't care?

You weren't sure what scared you more, the possibility that the Core didn't notice what they were doing, or that the Core did it on purpose.

Finally, the day came where you had the time and the resources to start the corvette project. Given the growing tension all over the galaxy and Mid Rim systems, the industry was quick to respond with all kinds of military hardware. CEC had released first information on a new upgrade kit for their CR-70, called the Vanguard C20 retrofit. They promised that it would bring up even older corvettes to the new standard set by the CR-90's. And Rendili StarDrive had released the Sühyrna-class corvette, a more modern version of the older Hammerhead-corvettes of the High Republic era. The fight for customers had started, and it began to heat up with each passing week. But for now, no clear trend seemed to have established itself, which made father confident that the more modular approach you planned to offer would get attention.

But first, you had to begin the design of the ship with the frame, as was proper. You had several established frames you could pick from. Shen was in favor of a relatively small frame, saying that they could be produced faster. He was sure that he could squeeze enough weapons to give even normal-sized ships a run for the Blue Milk. You weren't so sure about it, but would give it thought.

Corvette Frame fine tunning
"It's good enough."

>>I have to agree with Shen, it is good enough.<< Pinagg concurred with the younger man. He was currently flying above the holographic display of the corvette frame your team had come up with. His return to the team from his side project with the freighter had been welcomed by you. Mostly because you weren't happy with the frame for the corvette. It was good, yes, but something was missing, and you couldn't put your finger on it. >>Some places could be better, but I think it will work.<<

You looked up at him. "Anything in particular that caught your eye, Pinagg?"

The Genosian flew around the frame for a few moments and made some clicking noises that his protocol droid didn't translate. Finally, he stopped and pointed at some of the cross struts and connection points. >>Here and here, the design is a bit weak. At least for a ship that will see frequent combat.<<

You nodded and looked at Shen. "And you, Shen? Anything to add?"

The Duro was silent for a moment before sighing. As he spoke, he pointed towards the hologram. "It is a good design, I stand by that. But honestly? For our first try to build a military ship, I think we need to make it better. If it were a freighter, I wouldn't care, but the military tends to not forget if you give them something bad. I say we redo the whole thing from the start."

Finish the Frame!
In the end, you scrapped the first draft and began fresh. Luckily, Shen found some old performance data about corvettes from the New Sith wars somewhere. The performance data pointed out how much stress the corvettes' frames had to endure, as captains seemed to often use them like really fat and slow starfighters. This information helped enormously with the structure's development, as it finally gave you a point where you had to watch out. Thanks to understanding how corvettes had been used historically during combat gave you a deeper understanding of what would be needed.

Your team came up with a light yet durable frame, built in an elastic way thanks to its honeycomb design. That had been Pinagg's idea, you had been skeptical at first but soon came to love the hexagon shape. It made the frame surprisingly resilient against damage without losing its integrity or adding extra weight to it. So simple and yet so revolutionary! You asked your father to inquire, discreetly of course, if anyone in the industry did it this way, and he told you after a week that no one had come up with this idea. That means you already had something that separated you from the usual designs, that could only be good.

This result was worth the sleepless nights and the countless hours spent with the simulator to squeeze out almost all design flaws. Some still remained, but they were mostly minor and could be overlooked, especially if one considered the time you had until the delivery. Time was ticking, and you were still missing an engine to complete the first showcase for the potential customers. On the other hand, you could try and make the frame even better than it already was.

Choose one, time is ticking!

[ ] The Frame is excellent as it is.

[ ] It's good, but … (+2 Stress)
-[ ] we could remove even most minor flaws! (Remove all Flaws! Cost: 2 Advantage)
-[ ] we could make it basically buy at cost with some modern materials! (Remove all Cost! Cost: 3 Advantage)
-[ ] we could add some more compartment space! (# of Advantage converted to Compartment Space at 2=1)
