The reasons for exposed bridges in canon mainly has to do with psychological effects on the crew and enemies. An exposed bridge on a star destroyer makes a statement that it fears nothing and that nothing can get passed their shields. And in terms of rail guns, their limited ammunition is offset by their extreme damage potential and that most ships are designed against energy weapons or DEW's, not kinetic energy weapons. In combat the rail gun is essentially a high powered sniper rifle in comparison to the other assorted weapons on the ship. It is meant to either deliver a killing blow or a crippling blow to an enemy ship. And for those against the rail gun system we can create it as an optional part package for custom orders.
Proposed nickname for optional part equipment package: The Spear of Light
Requires at least 3 compartments to function, 1 for the actual weapon itself, 1 for additional power source to fuel it, and the ammo compartment. Additional compartments can possibly include additional sensors and ECM packages.
Here's the thing, there is literally zero evidence that Railguns do more damage than Turbolasers. The only times we've seen them fielded has been for their utility purposes compared to turbo lasers. There is no evidence they ignore starship shielding, outside of the same mechanics of Galaxy at War.
Yes, in our universe an object traveling at a fraction of C outperforms pretty much any potential weapon system due to the simple formula of KE=1/2M * V^2. The thing is, Star Wars isn't a Newtonian setting. Literally nothing about combat in Star Wars matches how real-life physics says it should, to the point I've joked that their formula for kinetic energy is probablyKE=1/2M^2 * V or something equally silly.
Railguns in Star Wars do not follow the rules they do in real life. They are not snipers. They do not do an insane amount of damage. Heck, it's incredibly likely they're easy to shield against and deal less damage than a comparable turbolaser, as they're only used in roles turbolasers are bad at.
Railguns could potentially make for a outfit on a space superiority fighter... No/little shielding on enemy fighters and ammo concerns are mitigated by using the room freed up by not needing giant radiator to cover laser heat buildup (as rail guns don't generate much heat)
Tldr:maybe usable on fighters... Needs research honestly and qm confirmation on usability.

Ammo constraints. That is the major reason every one uses DEWs, and they are easier to scale up by simply adding more power. A spinal railgun is only really practical for grounded weapon systems, and then it's just cheaper to stick a quad battery turbolaser on every building for a tax break.
Idea for an omake series, a Top Gears esque holo-net show that reviews and ships of the galaxy with tours and the reports of actual users of said ships pitching in their own credit(piece) for the show.
guys another detail about spainla weapons is that turbo-lasers have a platau where you start getting demisinishing returns for size. its why the ISDII uses 8 barrel turrets as its main ship to ship weapon.
Not a fan of the Viper for our first fighter design. I'm more on team Starfury on the topic of fighter designs we could potentially chose from. For me the Starfury's larger size means we can have lighter restrictions on what we can place in the inevitability altered and modified design. For example the modified Starfury would most likely have 4 front facing laser cannons we can also have room left over for two proton torpedo pods and a aft facing laser turret controlled by an astromech. Not to mention we can go for a pretty decent shield system and power supply for the design.
Also I remembered this that the Canon Rocinante Corvette class ships pdc must have a decent amount of space in the hull dedicated to holding the ammo, our Star Wars variant will mainly be using DEW'S, so we actually have a larger amount of room to fiddle with.

part of the reason i want to the viper first is that its more compatible with existing infrastructure. the starfury is a rack carried design while the viper can land in a flat deck hanger.
edit: also the Star fury thunderbolt screams bomber or heavy fighter to me in terms of desgin.

True the Viper would be easier to store we would need to beef up the size and internals in order for it be equipped with at least a normal class shield, and the multiple weapons. Even if we go full Star Wars tech cutting out the ammunition storage issue would only give us a marginal amount of space to fiddle with the internals.
Also the Starfury Thunderbolt design feels more like a heavy interceptor in design and function. Quick enough to hunt down priority targets, while also having enough defense and weapons to survive dangerous situations when going against larger prey.

hence why i linked the MkIII which is a larger frame then the mkII. acutally what if as an optional feature we install attachment points in the rear of the fusliauge so that they can hang off a rack? it would be a good lead in for a later starfury program where we build off the rack storage method and the Viper's decoupled maneuvering to build a larger and heavier fighter.

Having the Viper be the test bed for the Starfury designs would go along way for the company. And the rack storage method is not that unusual in the Star Wars universe ( looking at you TIE fighters), heck we can have the Viper combine with the Thunderbolt model to shave time on design work, would require some refinement in the tech but we can possibly produce something that can be a big seller in the markets.

we make it an option rather then the main thing. then the company can sell ceiling mounted and wall mounted hanger racks as add ons to any one who wants to carry extra fighters.

Brilliant, we can also modify the Starfury design to have landing struts that can allow it to land anywhere. Also how good are you with creating omakes.

I pitched the idea a couple of days ago about a pseudo Top Gear Holo net show that reviews the newest starship that are sailing the galaxy. Would like to see if you can make something out of this.
But to be serious, I was just finishing the next part. It is currently with my beta.
Sometimes I need more time than usual, especially when it is a longer update. These delays usually come from a toothing toddler, work, and gaming.
Regarding the discussion about Viper vs. Starfurry, you guys know that the Starfurry don't need to have fixed wings, right? We're in Star Wars, folding wings look cool, that is why they often come with different designs like the Torrent or the X-Wing. With such wings, a Starfurry could be also stored in normal hangars.

Your team worked day and night to finally get done with the bridge. Thanks to Shen's work and tweaks, your team managed to make the targeting computers much better than initially thought. You weren't sure how he did it, but Shen managed to pay a group of slicers on the holonet for some custom-made aim-assist tool for the shooter Neo-Crusader 4: Revenge of Mandalore. Somehow that software could be ported to real targeting computers, boosting their abilities to a new high. Together with your father and Shen, you three decided that the code's origin would remain a secret. Not because you feared it would be stolen, but because you feared the headlines if that ever came out. The source of the code wasn't important. After all, what was vital was the fact that it allowed the targeting computer to track fast-moving objects much better than anything else on the market.
Pinagg, on the other hand, came up with a surprisingly simple solution for boosting the corvette maneuverability: ion thrusters. No modern ship used them any more, a very low-tech approach. But the results spoke for themselves. Thanks to these thrusters, a skilled pilot could spin the corvette around to some extreme levels. When used to its full potential, the ship basically danced through the darkness of space. It brought the antigrav units to their limits, but it made for an impressive sight and allowed the corvette to actually dodge enemy fire. Thanks to the relatively low-cost solutions your team had come up with, you finished the bridge of your ship laughingly cheap.
That was the reason why Risa, the head of the marketing department, was giving you such a wide smile. It was almost as if she had fallen in love, just not with you. But with the hologram that was projected over your desk. There, the corvette's base model was lazily rotating around its base to give a look at it from all sides.
"You're sure the price won't go up?" Risa's voice was a bit shaking when she asked the question. Her eyes only wandered between the slowly rotating model and her datapad that showed her the estimated production cost.
"For the base model, no. It mostly depends on the customer and what they want to put on their corvettes. Maybe the cost will go up if we eliminate some smaller problems but not dramatically. To be honest, I think we could push the production down a bit more if we truly wanted." When you saw the hungry look in her eyes, you quickly raised a hand to stop her. "But not before we have some data from the field performance. When we get those, we will know in which direction any modifications will lead. For now, that number is the final production cost for the base model."
"Okay, noted." Risa made a short note on her pad and then looked up to you. In her big, black eyes, you could see an unholy sparkling, and her teeth were flashed in a smile. No other species could smile like a Nautolan, that much was clear. Even if it was a bit wider than a human could do it. "So, Rejoin Day is coming up. Do you plan to go to the ball, or are you going to hide like last year? Do you have someone to go with?"
You groaned and leaned back, a headache forming at the back of your mind. "Not you too, Risa! Father has been on me about it since last month! For some reason, he thinks it is important that I'm at the official reception down on Temaris, together with the Prime Minister and all the other upper-class idiots. I honestly don't have the time for that. The corvette needs to be finished and tested. That should be more important than some nonsense ball on a holiday."
"You're cute when you get angry, you know?" Risa leaned back, and for the first time, you noticed how low-cut her clothes were today. Usually, she was very much the ideal of a businesswoman who could meet a Hutt head-on. Today she looked much more feminine, something new. "But do you realize how important it is that you present yourself to the elite of Temaris? Not only for your father, but also for the future of the company? One day you will be our boss, all of us. They must know that, and you, as a person. That way, potential tensions could be prevented in the future. And …"
You looked at her, annoyed when she paused, and for a moment, you played with the idea to not ask. But you knew Risa well enough to know that she would sit there all day, something most of marketing had in common. Finally, you sighed and played along, much to Risa's amusement.
"And?"
"And I'm single and need someone pretty to hang onto when I go down there. Apparently, there is a betting pool in my department. They think I won't get another man to go out with me after Relooow broke it off. So, it would be a great way to make some credits, help the company and your father. And as a bonus, you will have me as your company for the whole, boring evening. We can even dance if you want."
"Oh, come now, Risa, don't play games with me. This isn't about what is good for dad or the company. Force, even the credits don't matter to you. This is about getting one over the other girls in the department, am I right?" You grinned at her annoyed face as she suddenly sat up straight again but didn't do anything about her cleavage.
"Okay, you got me. But that doesn't change anything about my offer. So, what's your answer?"
[ ] "Sure, why not. It will be nice to get out, and it's good for the family and the company." (Loss 2 Stress)
[ ] "Sorry, Risa, somebody else has to help you with your revenge." (Get 2 Stress, +2 Advantage)
"It is still a good, innovative solution to the corvette!" Shen was in his element, arguing for an out-of-the-box solution. With sweeping gestures, he pointed to different locations on the corvette's projected holo to make his point clearer. "We could concentrate on the classical weapons, as Tarkin has asked us to do, but I think that would be wasted time. Some of these, yes! But not the main weapons, there we should be a bit more open than we have been until now."
"What do you mean?"
Pinagg, who noticed your confusion, answered your question before Shen could do it. Even through his alien voice, it was clear how tired he was of the argument that Shen was prepared to bring forth. >>Shen means mass drivers. Somehow he has it in his brain that these will be the solution to modern warfare. Whatever the problem is, you can be sure that Shen will offer a solution including a mass driver. You have issues with pirates? Take a Mass Driver! Your Hyperdrive is malfunctioning? Mass Driver! The whole time it's this Mass Driver, that Mass Driver, Mass Driver here!<<
"I take it you're against it?" you carefully asked, noticing the tension between the two that was almost visable.
>>Yes, by all the Breeders! A Mass Driver is a good weapon against soft targets. But we are planning a military ship that, at least in theory, will be used against others of its kind. Now, a Mass Driver will massacre any civilian ship, like those often used by pirates. As you know, military shields frequently shift between ray shielding and deflector shielding to defend against missiles and laser fire alike. Civilian ships can't change between the two quickly, they need to be reconfigured. So, a pirate with his modified freighter will not have military shielding – that is rarely the chase. A Mass Driver is the perfect weapon against those, but, the ORSF is asking for a military ship cable of fighting other military ships.<<
Pinagg gave Shen an evil glare. >>Besides, maintenance will be a nightmare. Besides a few remarkable cases, nobody uses these things anymore. And even fewer are installed on spaceships. Oh, and don't get me talking about the ones we have found on the market. They are of Verpin making, fine weapons, but you can't even look at them the wrong way before they break. We should stay with the classic weapons and be done with it. The ORSF will thank us for it, I'm sure.<<
"Okay, Pinagg, now Shen, it's your turn. What speaks for a Mass Driver?"
The Duros opened his mouth only to close it again. He took a deep breath to calm himself down and then began to speak. "Look, I understand Pinagg's arguments. They are good, and all of them are right to the last point. But I disagree with him on just one point: the expected enemies. We might face a tension rich time at the moment where it looks like actual combat between military forces is a growing possibility, but that is still just that: a possibility. What we face in reality are law enforcement duties and anti-pirate operations, even for the ORSF. And these pirates are often using modified civilian models, with their original or modified civilian shielding. A ship armed with even one Mass Driver is the end of any kind of pirate operation. I'm sure the ORSF will see it the same way."
He pointed at the corvette. "What we're building here isn't something for the open market. We build ships for one user only, the ORSF. We planned this corvette around the idea to have a base model that can be fitted to the customer's needs. If we would build and plan this for the open market, I wouldn't even fight that hard for a Mass Driver. And that is because Pinagg's points are all valid. But we're building for the ORSF. Who, I wish to remind both of you, are well known for their operations against pirates and other criminal scum. They fight exactly the kind of enemy a Mass Driver will obliterate. So, why not give it to them? Just let us replace the turbo laser with a single Mass Driver, the light weapons would be still enough to overwhelm any freighter, be it modified or not."
"And if they encountered something that a Mass Driver can't defeat? Like the proposed real, military vessels Pinagg pointed out?"
Shen shrugged his shoulders and looked a bit sheepish. "Well, I suppose we could install some missiles or torpedoes?"
The final decision was yours, as usual.
Please use a simple "[ ]Plan name" Format, so I can more easily distinguish between different weapon layouts!
When I read the part about how a freaking aimbot for an in universe video game was used as a boost to the targeting system I just laughed out loud.🤣🤣🤣
Edit: Terms of armaments we should at least have a mix of weapons to fit the situation. And I have to side with Shen on the Mass Driver topic. The Corvette that we are developing is being design for combat against pirates, we can design a version later that can fight against military class ships later.
