Cardassian Ship – Durable, uncomfortable, close, cramped and cheap. Thinks creature comforts are for other people and technical sophistication is for people who haven't spent decades starving to death. The fact that the starving could have been avoided if the government were less...you know, monstrous doesn't seem to have occurred to that many of them.

Okampan Crew – the crew are bright, perky, cheerful, and incredibly psychically powerful. Individually, they're all better than Vulcans, and as a gestalt? Who knows!

Pod Captain Jandi Rox.

This name slaps. 10/10, best name.

The way I tried to make the Dragon a credible threat was "she retreats and adapts to situations quickly" and I hope I did a good job!

I was on the edge of my seat!

[X] Unfocus her and question her.

Only option imo.

Edit: also! I just noticed the memorial wall, that's really good and sad and awful. We need to make it stay as small as possible please.

Brian reached down, gently, and touched the necklace. It glowed to life and projected a shimmering holographic image - an army of tanks, helicopters and other vehicles, heavily armed and yet crudly built, as if they had been crafted from scrap and ruins, all of them marching victoriously past ruined, bombed out buildings. At their head were two figures - a woman in glittering armor, her head covered with a helmet, and a figure in rags and on a chain, forced to march before crowds of jeering Vidiians. The vehicles all flew the Emergent flag. Brian shook his head, drawing his hand back and the image stopped playing.
So, she sets up the Emergency with a military coup/revolution/whatever.

Then gets frozen for her trouble.

One wonders, did she volunteer for the procedure?
Or did it happen after the Emergency was well estabilished?

I'll give it a shot i guess

Edit: ouch
Edit edit: wait was it roll under?

PHAGE: PART TWO (1.5)
Janeway nodded. "Unfocus her. We need some answers."

***
Danara opened her eyes with a lurch and a horrible feeling in the pit of her stomach.

I failed.

The feeling drifted in her brain - but for a moment, she had nothing to hang it on. Instead, she just took stock of her physicality. Her belly ached as if she had been struck. Her back, though, wasn't killing her for the first time since the fall of Daalk. SHe'd been...sleeping in...caves. She shook her head - then tension exploded through her as she heard soft voices. Smug voices.

"I've done a complete..." Muffled. "...she'll be ready for questioning in an hour or two."

"Very..." Muffled.

Questioning, huh?

Danara rolled to the side - gasped. Fell. She was in some medical bed, and when she tried to get out of it, it felt like every muscle in her belly was made of sliced string. She grabbed and managed to slow her fall into a mere stumble, and thank the Gods, her captors went in for carpets and quiet muffled floors. Fuckers. She looked around the chamber she was in - it was a large...and preposterously advanced medical bay. She gulped.

Was it true, then? Did they really have a cure?

She tensed, then, hearing the door opening. She moved quickly and ducked against a wall, searching for anything. Ah!

A laser scalpel.

She snatched it up and charged, forcing her body to move through the pain and weakness. Her arms wrapped around the throat of the butcher that they had watching over her and she pressed the laser scalpel to his throat, snarling. "Hands up or I cut your throat."

The man she had captured - they had changed the uniforms again, apparently - sighed and didn't even raise his hands. "I believe you have picked up my cellular regenerator. If you wished to give me an unsightly mole, that is the correct tool. For cutting my throat, might I suggest the subdermal manipulator." His finger pointed at what she had been sure was an analgesic applier. She blinked, then blinked again as the man continued speaking: "Furthermore, while I could simulate blood gushing and brain failure and all the entertaining systemic side effects of a cut to my carotid, it would take an unacceptable amount of my ship's computing power."

"What?" Danara asked, her voice a thick rasp.

The man sighed. "Computer, set physicality to zero percent."

Danara, who had been using the man as a kind of support platform, fell to the ground with a crash as she simply slipped through him as if he was made of smoke. She groaned, sprawling, as the door opened and the room's lights brightened - and the aliens entered, holding what were unmistakably weapons. Danara gaped at them - stunned to her core...that she wasn't stunned to her core.

She was seeing...aliens.

Actual alien.

And she didn't feel shocked at all.

"Put those away," the man she had tried to take hostage said, and then spoke again. "Computer, restore physicality." His arms gently lifted her up, and plucked the useless cellular regenerator from her fingers. He set her down as she looked at the two aliens. One of them was very similar to a Vidiian - though her hair was the color of straw and she lacked any forehead ridges. She wore a gold uniform with a curious arrowhead badge on her chest. The other was completely bizarre...a walking...a...a...

A...

A massive bug. In a golden uniform, with a...weapon.

A bug.

A walking bug.

A massive walking bug. Who was speaking, in quite understandable Gantela: "Are you sure, Doctor?"

"Yes, I'm sure," the Doctor said. "Lieutenant Strong, go get the captain, she shouldn't even be at the turbo-"

Danara screamed.

It wasn't the bug. It wasn't the aliens. It wasn't the yawning gulf in her memory.

It was what she was wearing.

She thrust herself back, over the table, away from them, scrabbling. "Get it off me!" She shouted, tugging at the uniform. "Get this fucking thing off me!" She yanked desperately, and the straw haired alien - Strong, apparently - hurried to her side.

"Calm down, ma'am," she said, while the bug hurried to the door. "Computer, privacy screen, print uh, some...some clothes."

"Please state clothing preference-"

Danara ignored her. The shirt came off easily enough, then the leggings. She was left wearing her underwear and a small necklace she had never seen before in her life. But then the Doctor was beside her, his voice calm and authoritative. "Miss, you seem to be undergoing psychological stress." He knelt down. "Would you prefer a mild sedative?"

"No!" Danara snapped.

"Very good, the clothing," the Doctor said, reaching out and snatching the clothing seemingly from thin air. It was a beige jumpsuit, which Danara got on as quickly as she could. She panted, then, relaxing slightly - but seeing the pile of uniform on the ground made her want to curl up. The Doctor, seeing her reaction, took it away.

Strong's voice was shockingly gentle. "Are you going to be okay?"

"I...y-yeah..." Danara whispered. "W-What faction are you?"

"We're not a part of any Emergent faction," Strong said, firmly. "We're from another planet."

"...Emergent?" Danara's brow furrowed. "As in...the Emergency Dictatorship?"

"Yeah," Strong said as the door hissed open - but the new arrivals kept their distance for the moment. It felt like all that Danara could handle was just taking the words, one at a time. Bit at a time. "It's...been a while since you were Focused."

Danara gulped. "Ah." She whispered. Her hand had clenched around the necklace without her noticing - and an image was playing, off in the corner of her vision. She looked over at it and...realized she recognized it. She watched, unable to look away, as the holo played to its conclusion.

The tanks arrived at the central plaza of Daalk, where the prime minister's body was still hanging from a noose with a sign around his neck saying I WASTE COMMUNITY RESOURCES. The Emergent general, still wearing her body armor, yanked the hood off the skinny figure being led before the procession - and Danara could see her own furious eyes looking back at her...and all the pieces came crashing home.

She remembered the fall of Daalk, where the republican forces had been outflanked by Emergent troops pushing through swamps that should have been impassable, using technology that should have been inoperable with more than two thirds of their population dead from the Phage. She remembered the desperate weeks, fighting a fallback campaign into the hills and mountains of the Laghatas range, using every last particle cannon, every LRPM pod, every mine and munition she had - she had used avalanches and diehard snipers to tie them up...giving up land and weapons and even men, bit by bit.

The Emergents had expected the Republican Front to fall in two weeks. She'd made it last a year and a half.

And in the end, when they had encircled her cave, she had walked out and expected to be shot dead, like everyone else in the old government.

Instead...

Danara Pel, the Dragon of the Binary Systems, began to cry.

***
The meeting room was quiet. Danara Pel didn't meet Janeway's eyes - or anyone's, really. Instead, she focused on the warm cup of coffee she had been offered and spoke, haltingly. "Before the Phage...I...was..." She gulped. "I was, um, an elementary school teacher."

"You were a teacher?" Tom Paris asked, his eyebrows raising.

"Yeah," Danara said, quietly. "When the united government collapsed, I was elected by the local emergency pod to manage, uh...food distro, but...by then, everything was already falling apart so fast. The Emergency Dictatorship has sterilized six cities by then, fucking morons, it was an airborn pandemic, you don't stop it by glassing cities that were enacting their own fucking containment mandates." She rubbed her face. "T-That was about when the first of their Podmasters was announcing they'd discovered a way to control the Phage, so people were flocking to their banner...we, uh...we threw together an alliance, the southern pods, and...and they...beat us."

"I'm sorry," Janeway said, quietly. "We...we believe you've been in servitude to them since then."

"I know," Danara said, her voice hollow. "I can remember it all. Bring me out whenever they need a fleet action managed. Or a ground invasion." She shook her head, then rubbed her palm against her face. "Gods...how long...has it been. Between my..." She paused. "Usage?"

"We believe it has been two hundred years," T'are said, reaching over to gently take a hold of Danara's hand, squeezing.

Danara nodded. "F-Funny. I'd have thought I'd be more upset. B-But everyone I already cared about was already dead." She blinked, tears pricking at the corner of her eyes. She squeezed T'are's hand back, rubbed at her eyes, then looked down at the cup again. "Sorry."

"You have nothing to be sorry about," Janeway said, firmly. "You're a free woman now - and we will do everything in our power to fulfill your wishes for your future. What do you want?"

Darana blinked.

"...what...do I want?" she asked, and looked up, above Janeway's head, then over at the others, then back down at her cup. She could see herself in her cup. She felt as if she should look older. But she didn't.

What do I want?

She sounds like she's done with fighting and needs some time to recover.
