Something Wicked (Villainous Magical Boy Quest)

Turn 6
Present Zaiyu has become future Zaiyu and now the problems you put off for later are once again squarely in your lap. You resent the passage of time deeply. But there's only so much you can do about it as you are now. When you reach your teacher's level, you can experiment with tying the space-time continuum into knots. Until then, you are bound by its tyranny.

Which is to say, it's time to get up and make your report.

You check on Sasori—still sleeping! How cute—and then drag yourself to Shayin's rooms. Again. This is beginning to form a pattern and you don't like it.

Shayin clearly feels the same, because you can feel him banging his head against the wall for several seconds before he lets you in.

The lights are, for once, on and he's seated at his floating desk rather than curled up in bed in the dark. He must be having a relatively good pain day again. What a pity you're about to ruin that for him.

"What is it now," he growls.

"So I checked on the local hospital again and found some weird stuff," you say brightly. "And by weird, I mean. Impossible."

He squeezes his eyes shut and pinches the bridge of his nose. His braid isn't terribly mobile, but it still does a good job of lashing with annoyance. "What did you find this time? Another signature of Mithos hiding in the human genome?"

"Funny you should say that! That might actually be better than what I spotted."

You tell him about Kaoru Onodera, the completely ordinary regular human boy currently in the early stages of what you have tentatively dubbed 'Estilization.' Shayin looks at you in complete silence as you talk. Even his thoughts are utterly still. He's never shielded from you this well before.

You would be a little concerned about why this topic spurred such efforts from him, but. It's completely impossible. It wouldn't surprise you if he's just trying to hide the panicked internal screeching.

"How?" he asks finally, once you're done.

"I got nothing." You shrug. "I can keep him on observation for you?"

You were going to do that anyway, but still.

Shayin falls silent again. Then he rises from his seat with slow, deliberate movements.

"That may no longer suffice. The situation has already spiralled out of control. It's fortunate that these complications arose before the invasion plan entered its later stages, but..." He sets his jaw, eyes flashing. "Relying on you alone to navigate the unsteady currents we've found ourselves in is no longer ideal. Zaiyu. Take me to your research subject."

Shayin wants to go to Earth already? To visit Kaoru?

Well. You didn't see that one coming.

It's a beautiful day on the moon base and you are a terrible alien.

BASE ACTION. Pick 1:

[ ] SPEND TIME WITH RINS

Rins doesn't have much to do right now and they seem a little aimless. Check on what they're up to. There's a chance they have some insight into one of the many issues you're juggling right now.

[ ] SCHEME WITH SHAYIN

So, mana eaters are still a thing. They may no longer be dangerous… or they be more dangerous than ever. Either way, Shayin wants to know more, and so do you. Shayin heavily suggests you take time for this. Soon.

[ ] FIND AND OBSERVE MITL

You don't know where Mitl is or what he's doing. This worries you. Take some time out of your busy day to figure out where he is and what he's up to. Also, you need to chew him out for violating orders during the nine-month trip here.

[ ] GET SASORI SETTLED IN

You have a new familiar! Sasori is moved in, but you can still do a lot more to help him get settled in the moon base. And, more importantly, in your life.

GENERAL ACTION. PICK 2:

[ ] BACK TO SCHOOL

Roughly a week ago, you visited Sakuragaoka High School as Yuu Seiki and didn't quite get a tour. However, Kaoru said he'd give you a tour if you came back in a week. Kaoru's hospitalization delayed that slightly, but you can follow up on that now and finally explore the human education institute. You will go as Yuu Seiki.

[ ] TARGETED ESPIONAGE: SEARCH THE ALLEYS

Where there's one monster, there may be another. Sasori was lost in the city for several hours before he found his way to the hospital. Search for any more monsters in the area, mana eaters or otherwise.

[ ] TARGETED ESPIONAGE: SASORI FOLLOW-UP

Sasori appears to have either hatched or regained awareness in a lab. Now that he's had some time to rest, you can try to find that lab with him.

[ ] TARGETED ESPIONAGE: SAKURAZUKA THOUGH

The traces of Estil magic were found in a Sakurazuka building, so it's time to look into the Sakurazuka family. You'll find answers at the source of the problem. Hunt down the Sakurazuka family's base of operations and start snooping around.

[ ] TARGETED ESPIONAGE: FIND KYOKO

Okay, this isn't really espionage per se, but you had a very exciting day with Kyoko and you're worried about her. Go find her and make sure she's doing okay after her first real fight. Even if that means some uncomfortable questions might be raised. You will go as Kai Tendou.

[ ] TARGETED ESPIONAGE: HOSPITAL GIRL NUMBER 2

You found some suspicious information about a girl who looks like both Sasori and Tomoe Sakurazuka. A girl who was hospitalized recently for serious injuries and came out of a coma with far less baggage than she should have. Who is Shiori Tachibana and what is her deal? If you go as Kai Tendou, you can probably bring in Kyoko and/or Kaoru.

[ ] TARGETED ESPIONAGE: HOSPITAL BOY

So Ren Hayasaka is apparently some kind of medical miracle and his laser-focused stare reminds you of yourself. Between that and Kaoru's advancing condition, you're inclined to suspect something screwy might be going on. Look into it. If you go as Kai Tendou, you can probably bring in Kaoru.

[ ] EVERYTHING'S POLITICAL

You said you'd at least look into human politics for Rins. You've brushed up a little on that, but not nearly as much as you should. Go visit a human library for more info.

[ ] WRITE-IN

DISGUISE CHOICE. Pick 1:

[ ] Go As Yuu Seiki
[ ] Go as Kai Tendo
[ ] Make Another Disguise

RESEARCH ACTION. Pick 1:

[X] CRYSTAL FOCUS
: Carefully transform the arm into living crystal. Will take approximately forever and may never regain full range of motion. Approximately 5 turns remaining. Locked.

[X] KAORU, WHAT THE HELL

You have no idea how this happened, but Kaoru is slowly turning into an Estil. Both you and Shayin are in agreement: you need to figure out how this happened, how it's going, and what to do about it, fast.

[ ] HIT THE BOOKS

You brought a lot of information with you, go over the stuff about humans to ensure it's fresh in your mind. It would suck if you went down there and made a mistake. Also, you should probably start working on researching human politics sooner rather than later. The faster you have a report ready, the faster you can chuck it at Rins' head.

[ ] MONSTER MAYHEM – CREATION

You should definitely do some preparation before you go down there. In fact, you should have a monster ready to go before you ever touch the earth. They tell you there's such a thing as being over-prepared, but you don't believe it. Time to make a monster—a subtle monster, or at least one that doesn't scream 'alien invaders.' Keeping it on the moon base may annoy your teammates, but that's a price you're willing to make them pay.

[ ] MONSTER MAYHEM – ANALYSIS

So you finally have a monster to work with. But you didn't create Sasori, which means you don't understand what he's truly capable of—especially since he's apparently linked to the mana eaters, the most nightmarish creation of your entire species. Time to do some very targeted research on and very careful experimentation with Sasori.

[ ] MONSTER MAYHEM – UNLEASH

You have a monster. You have an assignment. Time to cause trouble with Sasori and/or Tsubasa.

[ ] OLD HISTORY – MANA EATERS

So you have a mana eater contracted to you. Now what? Do some research on the (very classified) records you have access to learn more about mana eaters. What sort of abilities might Sasori have access to? Are there any health issues to look out for?

[ ] CHARM THEM ALL

Charms are a great way for you to stash away spells in case of emergency, which is great because you can only hold so many spells at once. You have rebuilt your usual charm stockpile, but you could definitely have more charms. Especially now that there are magical humans running around in exosuits and the mana eaters may still be active.

Which is weird, because context alone gives a pretty clear idea of what he's thinking.

"Relying on you alone to navigate the unsteady currents we've found ourselves in is no longer ideal. Zaiyu. Take me to your research subject."

Shayin wants to go to Earth already? To visit Kaoru?
I take it back, I didn't know what he was thinking.

[X] SCHEME WITH SHAYIN
Shayin is not in a good mood, let's prioritize this. Rins and Sasori can wait, and Mitl probably hasn't been eaten by a carnivorous plant.

[ ] TARGETED ESPIONAGE: SEARCH THE ALLEYS
[X] TARGETED ESPIONAGE: SASORI FOLLOW-UP
[X] TARGETED ESPIONAGE: HOSPITAL GIRL NUMBER 2
-Bring Kyoko

So much investigation we need to do. So little time. Out of the ones I propritized, Hospital Girl #2 seems the most urgent and anything Sakurazuka-related seems too likely to move the plot forward give Shayin more headaches.

Randino Trevani makes a good point about the lab and I am blaming them if we give Shayin a heart attack.

[X] HIT THE BOOKS
We'll need to do this sooner or later, and sooner means we'll be better-informed about how the next headache we give Shayin relates to Earthling life.

I really need to reread this. I love how we have it seems to have completely derailed the plot. Like. Who knows anymore what's going to happen... As an anime it is actually kind of funny to think about. Magical girl monster of the week that just never happens.

Kaoru knows Kai as the one who explained what is going on with him. If we are approaching him with Shayin in tow, better to do it as Kai who is supposed to be magical than one of his other persona's who isn't as far as Kaoru knows.

We should make a charm to monitor Kaoru. What is going on with him is more than important enough for it.

Otherwise focus on the mana eaters lab.

No no. It's still in the first part of Season 1, where the girls are gathering together and finding mysteries / allies / enemies. Once the whole team is assembled the villain(s) of Season 1 can take the stage and leave the mysteries hanging over everything as they take precedence!

Are these really allies? What was going on in the Hospital? Who are the Zaibatsu really?

Now I might want dearly to talk to Kyoko as part of brilliant plan "Become the leader of the exo-suit humans because they're our friends useful" but I also think that showing up to Kyoko with the groundwork of another exciting hospital mission after not quite following up with her last time tells a more interesting story. Instead the action goes to School so that Yuu can gather some more information on humanity and also the plucky school girls with phenomenal cosmic powers.

Going to School is basically guaranteeing that the plot will start (in my opinion) whereas other options might continue to short-circuit the plot in funny ways. That'd be fine honestly, but it's not my preference. Think about it: a monster of the week plucky teen anime without a school life as the grounding for character arcs? PFFT! Not happening. And if they're going to school (and having character arcs) we should go to school (and have character arcs) too! It's just science (probably).

Scheme with Shayin is ~kinda required. Not really but he's also the only one in massive brain-breaking stress about all this. We're the only one that actually knows what we've reported that isn't him. Should be good for the guy.

Sasori Follow Up is a personal preference. It's the kind of information that, once we get it, gives us a task to throw the Magical Girls at. Kai Tendo can be a paranormal/magic investigator type who's much more accepting/used-to the insanity of everything than the girls probably will be. Secretive, a bit mysterious, but helpful and friendly to Kyoko and Kaoru. We can even bring the other two leads forward to Kaoru+Kyoko and with Kai we're the K K! Uh! Nevermind! We're just a trio of teens trying to unravel some mysteries with no catchy team name or anything! :p

On the other end of manipulation/friendship Yuu is a classmate that was already there for an Awakening and has good relations to two of the other girls. He's a guy that goes to school and maybe has some magical sensitivity or something. He likes the same kind of manga that you do and he's a good ear to talk to about things you maybe wouldn't talk about to your intimidatingly put together leader/boss/superior. For that to happen though, we need to go to School pretty regularly. Wouldn't hate subbing it out for a Kyoko follow up action, but I prefer the School at the end of the day.

Crystal and KAORU WHAT THA HELLLLL are locked in, so that leaves us a single Learning action. So let's pick up some extra Charms. I think Charms can work as a "mysterious human magic tradition" for Kai (and maybe Yuu, potentially) to be using so having more is a good idea.

Oh also we probably should message Kyoko that we're alright. We were pretty messed up last she saw us, but hey. We're a little preoccupied with KAORU WHAT THA HELLLL

We have a monster, we chuck monster at magical girls. Simple and easy and it advances the plot.

We should do a follow up on Rose to try and steal her Ribbon, it would make a great equipment for Sasori. Mentioning here in case anyone forgot.

I'm not even sure Season 1 has started. Everything we've seen of the girls could just be backstory they reveal after they recruit or are recruited by their Pink.

(And that's assuming we can still salvage a recognizable magical girl plotline out of whatever ends up happening!)

We should do a follow up on Rose to try and steal her Ribbon, it would make a great equipment for Sasori. Mentioning here in case anyone forgot.
We'll definetely see her at school, we can steal it then.
This feels like the slice-of-life half of an early-season monster-of-the-week episode. We should have the little bat steal it.

A reminder that the trail to the lab Sayori came from is starting to go cold. It's now or never.

It would also just be wise to investigate sakurazaku at the same time so we can connect the lab to Tomoko's father.

As I think I mentioned earlier, Zaiyu has actually been very competent. He's derailed pretty much the entire alien invasion plot, but even Shayin can't actually blame him for the crime of actually doing his job instead of messing around with schoolgirls. Instead, we get to question if our listed objectives are even feasible, wonder if our bosses are actively trying to get us killed, get tangled up in the other seasons' plots early, and quite possibly form a reluctant team-up with the magical girls because while we do want to conquer the Earth, we would prefer it be un-exploded when we do so.

We...don't actually have that many options this time.

The things we need to do are pretty much locked in so...

[X] Plan Plot Hooks

Only things I'd change is maybe look into Sasori more but I'm fine with it otherwise.

That said...Let's open the gate shall we? It's about time we lived up to our title.

Present Zaiyu has become future Zaiyu and now the problems you put off for later are once again squarely in your lap. You resent the passage of time deeply. But there's only so much you can do about it as you are now. When you reach your teacher's level, you can experiment with tying the space-time continuum into knots. HAHAHAHA. Man I love Zaiyu as a character and moments like this is a big part of it.

Shayin guessed the impossible and Zaiyu delivered. Also he 100% knows something.

Shayin is not happy about this but he's like Zaiyu did his job and went above and beyond in scouting so we now know we have a lot more to do.

Ah the classic case of Zaiyu being so competent that Shayin is sent to the mentally screaming hell...
Shayin can't even blame Zaiyu because he's just doing his job really damn well.

I really need to reread this. I love how we have it seems to have completely derailed the plot. Like. Who knows anymore what's going to happen... As an anime it is actually kind of funny to think about. Magical girl monster of the week that just never happens.
Zaiyu being so damn good and stumbling onto stuff so much disrupting all the plans is great.

As I think I mentioned earlier, Zaiyu has actually been very competent. He's derailed pretty much the entire alien invasion plot, but even Shayin can't actually blame him for the crime of actually doing his job instead of messing around with schoolgirls. Zaiyu has punched through so so much stuff through luck and skill.

[X] PLAN: GENIUS AT WORK

It's a shame our PC is generally smart or I's suggest making a third monster and having it bumrush the hospital to see how much data it can get before it gets dusted.

Actually, given that we already know monsters are apparently already an actual thing, making a dumb combat monster, setting it to attack something visible but not actually that important, and then waiting to see who shows up, is actually a surprisingly viable plan. We can even pin it on the monster lab.

So... yes, we actually could just enact the most generic magical villain starter episode possible, purely to fish for magical girls. Setting a dumb, expendable, tutorial monster to attack some landmark, then sitting off to the side as a mysterious shadowed figure.

I love this plan in theory. I love that it genuinely serves a strategic purpose.

But we just don't have the time to make a new monster and unleash it against the hospital, just to see what swarms when we shake the nest.

Hmmm... alternative idea: We create a monster explicitly intended to be a reusable expendable beatstick. Some kind of spirit creature that possesses objects and can escape after the shell is destroyed, or a minion-spawner that can be parked somewhere secluded and used to produce expendable drones, or something with the power to make a copy of itself, or something like that. Investing a lot of its power in whatever makes it reusable means it would probably be rather weak comparatively, but we don't need a particularly strong monster for a lot of those purposes.

Then we could use it to shake the nests, do distraction attacks, or just provide replenishable cannon fodder alongside more important things.
