Something Wicked (Villainous Magical Boy Quest)

Correct. Shayin is genuinely shocked that Zaiyu is doing his job reliably and mostly without complaint. He is also incredibly upset about what Zaiyu keeps finding. Better to know and suffer than to live in ignorance, but... what the hell is wrong with planet Earth?
Are the other two subordinates as annoying as expected since thier both cooped up at base and the stuff Zaiyu keeps brining back is either above their paygrade or stuff the Shayin would rather they don't know for horrible planet related reasons?

We know for a fact that all the quests, both this and negaverse, have rolls relating to Mitl exploding plants.
We should honestly make a 'Plant Control monster' at some point to help with that... but we sure as heck don't have the monster slots to maintain it!

Or rather we don't want to be stuck maintaining it.

We have actual work to do.

Can we create a plant-controlling monster and then make Mitl maintain it?

If we do that, can Zaiyu maintain enough influence over it that the monster can contain Mitl's unhelpful impulses, or would we just be giving him a new tool to make plants dangerous?

True I was thinking more something to take care of the aftermath.

But eh.

Gives everyone at the moon base something to do so mayby we leave it as it is.
Indeed. The more time Mitl has to spend cleaning up his messes, the less time he can spend blowing up plants, and eventually, we can jettison all of that magically charged plant matter directly at Tomoko's lawn, cursing it with the latent life and necromantic energies.

Careful not to jettison Mitl with that plant matter.

Yes, I know some people want to jettison Mitl out the nearest airlock, but he does genuinely useful work for us. And if we drop Mitl on Tomoko's lawn, she'd probably stick him in a greener version of Ren Hayasaka's magic hyperfixation lab. She's demonstrated that she knows how to use someone with dangerous special interests.

I just realized something.

If Zaiyu is the season 2-3 starter general doesn't that actually make him extremely threatening for the MG's current power level?

Zaiyu has alluded that in a straight fight, he could easily stomp any of the currently active magical girls.

But that's not his job, that's Rins' job, and he thinks they're kind of cute.

The only constant across all negaquests is that Mitl can't be trusted around plants.
Even Mitl-quest is full of confused panic as their rolls swing between abysmal and insanely high whenever they're doing work on plants, and it's always the result that will cause the most trouble at any given moment.

Oh right before I forget wasn't their a project idea we unlocked in the first update we used Kaoru... someone about making monsters better able to be independent I think?

I very much enjoy how this quest's vibes are so consistently those of a man skidding across a floor covered in ball bearings. It's too late to avoid the need to do very silly and undignified things to keep his balance, so he's just making the best of it and it's hilarious to watch.

Also, I am by no means confident that our ability to mad-science up a plant-controlling monster capable of containing Mitl's plants will outpace Mitl's ability to mad-science up plants capable of eating our monsters.

It's challenging him to drag us down to his level and beat us on experience.

Hmmm... alternative idea: We create a monster explicitly intended to be a reusable expendable beatstick. Some kind of spirit creature that possesses objects and can escape after the shell is destroyed, or a minion-spawner that can be parked somewhere secluded and used to produce expendable drones, or something with the power to make a copy of itself, or something like that. Investing a lot of its power in whatever makes it reusable means it would probably be rather weak comparatively, but we don't need a particularly strong monster for a lot of those purposes.

Then we could use it to shake the nests, do distraction attacks, or just provide replenishable cannon fodder alongside more important things.
For anyone here who's also an UsagiQuest participant, I'm going to formally give this the "THINGAMABOB!" seal of approval.

Looked up the projected I was thinking of.
Then Sasori will never have to fear what starvation might make him into again, you can happily pay Kaoru back, and you'll even have a more reliable source of minions for the invasion plan, so none of the others will be able to quibble about your priorities.
New Project Found: Perpetual Motion Monsters
I have to say if we actually get the chance to work on it I will fully support any plan that takes it.

After all it'd be much easier for Sasori to be a rival to one of the MG's if he isn't reliant on us to stay alive, I mean it would be very anti-climatic if for some reason in the big battle we end up going down first and put our buddy on a time limit.

Yes they are. Especially Mitl, though Shayin is personally irritated by Rins in entirely different, non-plant related ways. Zaiyu is the favourite comrade right now. Which is saying something, given he's basically a cat who shows up, drops a new conspiracy in Shayin's lap, and then swans off.

Entirely possible to make it, but you would have to collaborate with Mitl and you would absolutely be giving him a new tool for his experiments.

I just realized something.

Oh yeah. Zaiyu is a solid season or so of power ahead of the magical girls right now. He can do pretty much anything with impunity... for the moment. Overreaching himself will have consequences when they catch up in a season or two.

Good to know.

Also on point number 2... I'm pretty sure Zaiyu thinks most things are cute.

His like the evil alien mage version of a Disney Princess like that,.

Very true. Zaiyu is extremely vulnerable to cuteness proximity.

You're right, there is. It will be available after the arm project is done.

Glad to hear you're enjoying it! That frantic but devious tone is one of the more fun things about writing Zaiyu. If Sasori or [REDACTED] were the main player character, this quest would have very different vibes. It sure is fun watching Zaiyu try to compensate for the absolute nonsense that is his life, though.

@SillyLittleCoffe I've been meaning to ask... is elemental rock paper scissors a thing when two... well sources 'elemental' magic clash or is more just a raw power thing?

Kinda! Depends on the elements being used, how they're being used strategically, and how much of a power differential there is. For example, Tomoe's water magic would have been more effective against the hospital bed monster than Kyoko's wind magic because metal rusts. And also Kyoko was mostly using piercing attacks against a monster that has few parts vulnerable to piercing damage--if she'd been able to spam vortexes and whirlwinds, she might have had an easier time battering the monster to bits. But Rose's fire magic would have been more effective, because metal melts and Rose critted her awakening roll and now she's supercharged. And Zaiyu's power is largely non-elemental but he still squashed it once he stopped holding back.

Hope that helps!

Definitly.

Don't get me wrong I hope he gets a chance to show off at some point... especially if its done while hinting that he's actually the int build of his faction and not one of the main fighters but I want him to be smart about it.

Even if Zaiyu outright going "I'm just my factions tutorial baddie!" would be freaking hilarious.

Though now I wonder if Zaiyu is going to put an act if he has to 'go loud' or he's just going to be himself. I mean he has the ego to pass himself off as a bad general just being himself but he might also be a bit to easily distracted to sell his actual threat level.

Well, we do now have a potential plan for an attack that could end with 'Oh, I could have crushed you, pretty easily honestly, but I don't actually want to; I just wanted to see who'd show up.'

Yeah... though I want to joke that Zaiyu would somehow get destracted in the middle of the fight... potentally by one of the magical girls own banter or him going sqeeee if one of them does something genuinely cool to him.

... and than his relative power level is revealed.
