Something Wicked (Villainous Magical Boy Quest)

I want to see his attempt at explaining Perfectly Normal Earth Magic Knowledge.

Jokes aside here, like. I think it's actually relatively easy to give an explanation by just telling the truth while cutting out the alien aspect.
-Part of an organization of magic users that separated themselves from the rest of Earth after a great catastrophe in ancient times wiped out most magic.
-We've been away in our own secret enclaves ever since then (and this is totally why I know absolutely nothing about human society).
-We recently detected that magic might be returning to the world, and I'm here to investigate.

Simple, efficient, and mostly truthful! There are no possible issues that can result from telling her this!

I can think of at least 3, but that's beside the point. ...Maybe I fail at this "jokes aside" thing.

Consequences are the results of your actions! Nothing more, nothing less. They might be good. They might be bad. Either way, they'll almost certainly open up new sidequests and new events.
Oh, I love side quests. Not sure if Shayin likes them though, but we'll continue bringing these mysteries and dropping them at his feet like a cat bringing its feeder dead animals. <3

[X] THE MISSING BODY
[X] STUDY CORPSES

One long wall is entirely covered corner to corner with a single massive set of metal drawers. Each individual drawer looks unusually large. A person could fit in one of those compartments if they lay down carefully and didn't scrunch into a ball in their sleep.
What an insightful comparison.

This would be easier if you could fully focus on detecting magic, but you're confident that you'll be able to tell if anything is strange.
...why?
I mean, he was right for once, but still.

It's a dead body, stashed here like potion ingredients, waiting for someone to use it.
That's so Estil. It's a corpse, it's been stored, it must be a resource for someone.

"Kyoko," you say, very calmly. "Is it normal for morgues to enchant their… inhabitants?"

She stops staring blankly at the corpse long enough to stare blankly at you. "What?"
Zaiyu. Why did—do you think that humans can enchant stuff but not use other kinds of magic? Did you see one girl awaken to strange magical powers and assume some other humans are probably also magical?
Well when I put it like that, it kinda sounds reasonable. But still.

We need to attach Kyoko to our alien boy so he can roll good.
Yet another argument for befriending the magical girls' civilian identities: They are good luck charms.

Started reading this quest, it seems pretty good. I think perhaps that the Titan PC option would work well as a major third party arc villain who shows up and puts the original struggle on hold. No idea if he has been incorporated yet.
I mean, we recruited the Monster. It's entirely plausible that the Titan will show up at some point. Though probably not before the end of the first season.

[X] THE MISSING BODY
[X] STUDY CORPSES

On one hand, I want to figure out what's going on here. On the other hand, I want to see what wild conclusions Kyoko comes to without any guidance from Zaiyu. Speaking of which...

Jokes aside here, like. I think it's actually relatively easy to give an explanation by just telling the truth while cutting out the alien aspect.

I think Kyoko can come up with some approximation of this on her own if we let her stew in her scant data and fill in the blanks via pop culture osmosis. I want to see that happen. It sounds fun. Even more fun if Zaiyu hears her guess that he's, like, part of a secret society protecting human society from magical threats and goes "Um, yeah, how'd you guess?"

It's entirely plausible that the Titan will show up at some point. Though probably not before the end of the first season.
Actually, based on what inspirations were mentioned for the Titan archetype, they tend to show up really early in the show, often in the first or second episode.

But not in their form as the Titan.

They tend to fit a mix of love interest/ best friend/older brother figure (in Fuuma Monou's case, arguably all three) and are usually someone the MC trusts deeply and cares for with all their heart.
And then they turn Evil.
And by Evil, I mean expect them to torture the hero once they do, and/or kill off their friends.
The turning evil part is usually due to some kind of personality overwrite, whether due to reincarnation or otherwise, but at least one of the examples mentioned was a sociopath from start to finish and was pretending the whole time.
Expect hints to be dropped as to what's going to happen, but not enough that the viewers won't be shocked.

Oh, and all the Titans have love interests in some form or another (you could argue that Fuuma doesn't, but you could also argue that he does, sooo...)
Expect that love interest to SUFFER. LIKE. HELL. once the Titan is revealed.

At least two examples went semi-catatonic after the reveal (they got better eventually)

Edit: The love interest is in all cases cited the main hero. Also, while all Titan inspirations are male, not all of their love interests are girls (we're with 3/5 love interests being girls, 3/4 if you don't count Kamui as Fuuma's love interest)

The Titan is an archetype that relies on tragedy and readers feeling the pain of the characters. He's not the kind of guy to remain on his throne ordering Youma around while the heroes get stronger. He builds an emotional connection with the heroes instead.

Also ? From what I've heard, the two Titan inspirations who had both themselves and their love interests reincarnate got really really creepy, and the Titan is already a pretty creepy archetype to their love interests in general.

In more idealistic series, it's possible to return the Titan to their nicer original self, although this doesn't happen often since Titans tend not to show up in more idealistic series.

[X] THE MISSING BODY
[X] EXPLAIN YOURSELF TO KYOKO

We can just pass it off as our arm being cursed to enhance magic by a strange plant, which let us notice things that are magic and go from there.
Also, it seems like nobody has brought this up but there was a dead body on the floor and someone went to great lengths to clean that up. Someone got murdered here. We should probably be concerned about that.

I do like the sound of that idea, the only problem is that if we need to show them where we 'found' the plant, we have to get Mitl to put Crystalvine somewhere on Earth (AND ONLY CRYSTALVINE), to keep our cover. And even then, that gives us the excuse for the crystalvine to 'accidentally' show up somewhere else to cause havoc.

If it means Mitl gets his own human identity and half-baked cover story, I'm all for it.

Still catching up. It's nice. Some thoughts:
-I like the alien invaders, lots of personality, distinct gimmicks to make fights interesting etc. I'm increasingly imagining them as siblings.
-I like the idea of humans no selling some of Mitl's poisonous plants. Not all of them, but enough to cause confusion as the humans reveal that they enjoy capsaicin.
-I feel like remaining a villain is good but not necessarily remaining a bad guy. Like the mission statement should remain take over the world even if it seemingly resembles peaceful co-habitation.

And now, to take this idea to its logical conclusion:
Every single Estil, In disguise, living on Earth. Co-habitation achieved.
Zaiyu mostly handles it well, until his human social life starts to take off, leaving him no time to pursue his true passion (making monsters).

Sasori doesn't. He just started getting used to the moon base and the other Estil, and now he has to get used to a big apartment with a bunch of new people who he doesn't have time to get used to because it's always new new people.

Mitl spends most of his time inside. Not willingly, mind you; he's just under orders ever since the poison ivy incident.

Shayins headaches get even worse—partly because of his proximity to several billion people, partly because of the trouble the others get into, mostly because he regularly has to talk to strangers. That's stressful.

Rins is handling it fine.

After re-reading Eve Of Destruction, I really want us to research human politics some time in the future and blackmail people.
It looks like it could be fun.

Also some more notes on the Titan.
Pre-Evil, the Titan is usually a "cool" character who easily gets along with people, sometimes better than the MC, and if in high school, has some notable degree of popularity.
Both examples that I know well that were also still in school were quite athletic; Fuuma was the star player of his school's basketball team and Aoyama a kendo champion.
My, that sounds like someone we know, doesn't it ?
With that, I'm changing my vote.

[X] DISCUSS BARRIERS

The best way to win against a Titan is to be someone they have a deep emotional connection to.
Anyone else tends to die in fairly short order.

I've just had a nasty thought: what happens to criminals in Estil society ?

Also, everyone here is chatting about
Tomoe being secretly evil, but she hasn't got a patch on Minto from Tokyo Mew Mew.
When I saw the scene where she rags on Ichigo for being late for work because of spending time with Aoyama and puts herself on a pedestral by saying she arrives early, I really wanted Ichigo to point out that arriving early doesn't help one bit when you never actually do anything.
I bet the reason Zakuro keeps spurning her advances is because she doesn't want a lazy wife.

I've reached the Tokyo Mew Mew episode where Ichigo's school friends both randomly fall in love with Shirogane and Akasaka.
Reminded me of why I'm not overly fond of the love at first sight trope.

Namely being one of the few CLAMP series AFAIK that's actually critical of those sorts of relationship
The age gap might be the least unhealthy part of that relationship, all things considered.
I don't see Tokyo Babylon as criticising the problems of two people being in a relationship when one of them is an adult and the other a teenager; it's more in the vibe of what loving a absolutely terrible person will do to you and your mental health, and maybe touches on the power imbalances that happen when one side is constantly lying to the other.

Also, I've decided to start an online petitions for a Tokyo Babylon anime, preferably made by MAPPA.
Who knows how to make an online petition and who wants to sign it ?

So more questions !
Do you think Kyoko would like the webcomic Ghost Eyes ? It's horror, but it's more psychological horror than scary monsters (although there's some of that too), and there's some really disturbing stuff like self-harm and graphic child abuse onscreen.
BTW, what's Kyoko's relationship with her parents ? Maybe it's just a genre conceit, but I find it weird she seems to be living full-time in the hospital when most people suffering from chronic health conditions I've met live at home and go to the hospital to get treatments done once or twice a week.
And have longer stays if there's a relapse.

Kyoko likes psychological horror, but depictions of self-harm might disturb her more. As a long-term hospital resident, she's seen some stuff. And some of the worst parts are what people can do to themselves.

In short, Kyoko's relationship with her parents is pretty good. However, like many Japanese adults, they spend most of their time at work. And since both of them work full-time to support her hospital bills, the family doesn't spend a lot of time together in person. They do chat often through messages and email, but it's not really the same. This is also why Kyoko spends most of her time in the hospital--her family isn't equipped to care for her at home. Or rather, it wasn't. Finally being able to leave is very important to her as it marks her recovery as hitting a point where she no longer requires supervision. From here on out, she expects more of the once-a-week treatment schedule.

Kyoko's parents are way nicer than what I was assuming.

Also, I've learnt something truly shocking today: Nagisa's dad is not only Dio, he's also Seishiro Sakurazuka.

On Civilian Power Levels and Dice Rolls
It has belatedly occurred to me that I need to clear something up about the quest's power levels (and dice rules). First, there are absolutely concealed rolls happening. Second, not every character who doesn't roll is hiding something. The rule for Civilian-level NPCs is this:

Civilian: roll 1d10 for all combat actions. No magic actions.

In other words, if a Civilian isn't rolling for magic perception, it's because they have no actual magic to make that roll with. This also means most magic will autopass if used on a civilian. Do with that knowledge what you will. 🙂
