Something Wicked (Villainous Magical Boy Quest)

It's, just so beautiful. I love it. I will name it "Suffer" for the pain it brings to ally and enemy both. 🥲

[X] SIZE-SHIFTING BAT

Bat bat bat bat bat bat bat bat bat bat!

Er, ahem. After careful consideration over a period of time longer than a few seconds, I have decided that the bat is the best option, on account of being the cutest. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

[X] SIZE-SHIFTING BAT

We keep it mostly off base to not annoy our teammates too much. And on earth, its echolocation will sound like any bat's echolocation, so it should be fine and stealthy. We know someone is pulling plants out of storage, so they might notice our weird variant, and I feel like the crystal gecko is only slightly better than a normal tape recorder glued somewhere discreet.

As expected.

Does the rest of the court have any thoughts, or are they happy with a cute bat?

Eh. It makes Invidia happy and I have no strong feelings about the matter.

The bat is reasonably stealthy while also being the best option for "oh shit, we've been caught, time to fight", which is always a concern. The flower is best long-term for purposes of creating a spy network, instead of just one creature in one location at a time. And the gecko is just "meh" all around as far as I'm concerned, due to being slow, fragile, and unable to defend itself at all. I'd personally go with the flower since we have the option to try and think about the long-term at the moment, but the bat isn't a bad decision so I don't care enough to override Invidia on this one.

The Gecko does have one major advantage: of the options given it is the best infiltrator for penetrating secure facilities. The bat is sneaky, but it has to either keep flying or find someplace to land, and is much easier to detect due to generating both sound and visible movement. It also lacks endurance; flight is energy intensive, and bats basically can't walk.
The gecko meanwhile is practically undetectable as long as it sticks to walls and ceilings, and has a slow metabolism giving it a lot of lingering ability to wait and eavesdrop on a target, while patiently waiting for holes in security to open up to let it slip through.

I was going to vote for the Gecko because it's better for our purposes, but my intrusive thoughts won and now I want to annoy our teammates for no reason other than it's such a Zaiyu thing to do.

You could ??? a little of that single-minded passion he's notorious for right now.
You could put "Sense" or "Feel" there

I was initially really tempted by the Gecko, but after thinking about it the bat sounds too cute to pass up. Also I don't have the patience for a Gecko to slowly infiltrate a location, so we would need to bring it somewhere and leave it, but then I don't know how we would learn what it hears.

If people are torn, I'll remind you that bats can hang silently from ceilings as well, and both the gecko and the bat have the ability to conceal themselves visually. The bat's main advantages are being more mobile, combat-ready, and the size-shifting, and the gecko's main advantages are better vision, being able to stay planted in place longer, and that it doesn't make cute squeaky sounds.

TLDR, if you want a more standard magical girl monster that can carry a kaiju fight scene, go with the bat.

It's almost Halloween. Bats are the only responsible choice

It can fly and hang from the eaves. Quite literally, our little eavesdropper. Also...

A stealthy bat covered with fur that can change colour and texture to allow it to blend into any surface.... It can shrink until it's smaller than your fingernail

It has camouflaged fur, and can become the size of a fly. It can fly into somewhere, hide, and then listen quietly while the size of a fly. It probably doesn't need to squeak unless it's flying and needs to see its surroundings.

Normal bats are very good at infiltrating buildings because they can land a number of places whether it's standing up or hanging from something and fit in small areas while the size of a small to large rodent, and fly forr holes they've discovered with their echo location rather than needing to climb. A fly sized one can hide far more easily, especially with the camouflage. It's greater mobility and size changing provide options for both escape or combat giving it more survivability than the other options.

Speaking of which, his shapeless cloth seems to be faintly stained with... paint?

Huh. You didn't really peg Mitl as having a hobby of art. But then again, you didn't really think he had hobbies. He strikes you as the type to dedicate his life wholeheartedly to his work.
Don't judge a book by its cover, Zaiyu. Mitl is not just someone who's obsessed with plants. I think he has some hidden depth. Maybe you can find out if you talk to him more often.
"If you want a more informed opinion, I could take a closer look—"

"Absolutely not, thank you, good day."
Does Zaiyu Trust issues, or pettiness? Maybe even both. Poor Mitl...
He doesn't even explain why the signature of Mithos makes things worse despite your careful hinting that he should, since you two are working together now and all that.
Either Shayin also have trust issues, or he doesn't bother with telling Zaiyu about it.

"Now, monsters can come in all sorts of sizes, from tiny to kaiju sized, but I'm thinking a small one this time," you say, calling up a diagram of the approximate scale you want. "Nothing larger than about beach ball-sized. Guess why."

"Um, because it's a spy?" Sasori guesses. "If it's too big, it might have trouble sneaking around."

"Correct! That, and also because Shayin might get mad at me if it's too obvious. Smaller means easier to hide, or pass off a toy or something. Either or. For the reagents, I'm thinking to add something new." You take a moment to pat the suspiciously dark Lightsprout bloom you found in the hospital basement. Its bells bob under the pressure, but its black light doesn't flicker. If anything, it grows stronger. Interesting. "But too much of a new thing could have unpredictable results, so I'll temper that with two reagents I'm more familiar with. Crystalvine..." You take a moment to make a face at the little cone of white. "And regular Lightsprout."

"It looks like the new one."

"Yeah, the dark one is definitely a variant of Lightsprout. Looking forward to seeing what the differences are." You pat the regular Lightsprout and watch as the glow from its bells flickers with the impact. "Overall, what I want out of this monster is something stealthy and observant, so I'll be tailoring all of its traits to match that. The real question is what it should look like, what its senses should be like, and what kind of stealth it should be designed for."

Sasori nods agreeably and watches, the very tip of his tail twitching, as you pick up each reagent in turn and begin your preliminary scans and theoretical combinations.
What can I say? This moment is just a cute bonding moment between Zaiyu and Sasori. I wonder what the Magical Girls will think of Sasori (while he's disguised) though?
