Something Wicked (Villainous Magical Boy Quest)

Mitl? You good? You seem honestly pretty restrained for this.
Is it possible we misjudged him, and he's actually perfectly competent?..

...Nah.

[] SIZE-SHIFTING BAT

A stealthy bat covered with fur that can change colour and texture to allow it to blend into any surface. The bat itself is able to use a combination of Growth and Vibrance to change size rapidly. It can shrink until it's smaller than your fingernail or swell until it's roughly the size of a skyscraper. This makes it a decent physical fighter for a stealth-based monster and Sound gives it some powerful ranged options. And its oversized ears will pick up every scrap of sound in the area and triangulate their position effortlessly.

However, it has extremely poor eyesight, may bump into things, and its constant squeaking is definitely going to grate on your teammates' nerves.
A combat-capable, flying stealth-scout, that makes a lot of noise? That last part feels like a deal breaker...
[] CRYSTAL GECKO

A stealthy gecko about the size of a cat that can cling to any surface and walk up walls. Although it has enormous eyes, it actually navigates primarily by bouncing sound off its reflective, crystalline scales. Thanks to Vibrance, it can instinctively manipulate the light around it to conceal its presence, creating an illusion of the surface behind it as if were not even there. This makes it very good at clinging to ceilings and other out-of-the-way places. And thanks to Growth, its metabolism is very slow, allowing it to remain in place for quite a while.

However, it's not a good fighter, moves rather slowly, and if anyone steps on it or bumps into it, its cover will be blown.
Amazing stealth, and a climber, but terrible combat capability. It can likely get to places it won't be bumped into, thanks to it's climbing, but it could die easily.
[] SEGMENTED FLOWER

A stealthy flower that can track movement in its surroundings through Sound and use a combination of Growth and Vibrance to extend coiling vines toward a given target. Although the actual plant is rather small, easily fitting inside a standard desktop flower pot, it can extend its vines across a sizeable chunk of the Tokyo area given enough time. And once it has vines in place, it can hear through blossoms on them, potentially allowing you to monitor several areas at once. And its vines could be used for an impromptu weapon if it comes under attack.

However, it's an immobile plant, and it lacks any means of concealing its vines beyond them being naturally small and, well, plant-like. If anyone is learned enough in local plants, they will know it's an unnatural growth. Or worse, try stamping it out as an invasive species.
A surveillance plant, able to a watch a bunch of Tokyo through it's vines and defend itself, but immobile and it's vines can be seen.

I love the vibes of Segmented Flower, but both it and Size-shifting Bat sound very easy to detect for a stealthy scout. I'll go for Crystal Gecko.
Plus, we can make Geico Gecko jokes with this one.

[X] SIZE-SHIFTING BAT

This is the most mobile option. There is a lot of places we want to cover, so something like this can fly in and start spying. The gecko requires us to drop it off and pick it up. The plant needs time to set up too. We can drop off the bat and it can fly to where ever we want to pick it up.

It's, just so beautiful. I love it. I will name it "Suffer" for the pain it brings to ally and enemy both. 🥲

If invisibility fails, it could hang out near ceilings and pretend to be an art piece? Admittedly I'm voting for this because cool lizard.

We wanted a crystal motif, and now we are going to stick to it, baby!

Make my monster grow is sooo tempting and he'd be adorable either size, I just know it!
But the constant noise making on a spy is a deal breaker, alas!

alas we will be boring but practical.

We could call it Count Fruitula. Or maybe Invidia.

An adorable bat plushie, that can change colors and squeeks? THat sounds like Magical Girl Mascot bait.

I was actually gonna vote flower until I saw this.

I'm pretty sure we only got off so lightly because Sillylittlecookie has some bad mojo to throw our way later and is attempting to lower our guard by interacting with Mitl without harm.
I didnt read the update yet, I would just like to note that I was thinking of doing another drawing for the quest this exact moment when Silly updated it. (Silly is a Seer proof)

Post-Reading Edition:
There seems to be a balanced amount of benefits and drawbacks... I tend to the Gecko and the Flower.

But think about our teammates suffering! Think about the false mascot possibilities. Think about tiny bat form dive bombing shallow princess only to turn into a bat of small van sized proportions just before impact. Think of giving a monologue from atop a giant bat Kaiju that unintentionally crashes into a skyscraper and Zaiyu playing it off as what he meant to do all along.

For what it's worth, the annoying bat squeaking is meant to be echolocation, which Estil can hear. Humans won't be able to pick up on the echolocation squeaks, so the bat will be stealthier than some of you think. Sorry for the misleading phrasing there.

Yeah, no, that's still detectible by any sound-tracking device.
Though it did bump my opinion up on the Bat several layers, it's still far too easy for any Urist McSoundman to be doing some experiment and notice the random blips in his gear.

And hey, there is a very small chance that you might actually learn something. After all, you may have passed all your botany courses, but Mitl Es Talis is still a name to conjure by in the botanical and necromantic communities. You could a little of that single-minded passion he's notorious for right now.
Mitl is a specialist and that matters, plus he covers Zaiyu's necromancy weakness.

You reach out with your senses and poke carefully at the plant until you find what he's looking at. Then it clicks. "A signature?"

"Of sorts. It's a mark left by adherents of Mithos and his descendants. It's supposed to look like his name written in antique runes."

Well, isn't that interesting. "So either adherents of Mithos and his descendants have been active on Earth for longer than we have, or..."
That's a pretty big deal.

Shayin waves at you to stop talking. Then he opens a bottle of pills, dry-swallows three, and turns back to you. "You may continue."

"You know it's not healthy to take medication dry."

"You may continue," he repeats without a single change in inflection.
Can't blame the guy.

"One day," he mumbles into the shining metal. "Just one day without this kind of nonsense happening."

"Yeah, that's asking a bit much of me and this planet both," you tell him.

He glares at you balefully through one eye. "And it has the signature of the House of Mithos on its cell walls?"

"That's what Mitl said."

Shayin groans pitifully. "Sure. Why not. We might as well add that to our plates. It isn't like we have enough to deal with already."

He spends several more minutes throwing a pity party for himself before he lets you leave. He doesn't even explain why the signature of Mithos makes things worse despite your careful hinting that he should, since you two are working together now and all that. He's a royal, isn't he of the House of Mithos?

Asshole.
Shayin does appreciate that Zaiyu is so competent and is getting stuff done but he hates that more work is being added to the job due to it.

"Now, monsters can come in all sorts of sizes, from tiny to kaiju sized, but I'm thinking a small one this time," you say, calling up a diagram of the approximate scale you want. "Nothing larger than about beach ball-sized. Guess why."

"Um, because it's a spy?" Sasori guesses. "If it's too big, it might have trouble sneaking around."

"Correct! That, and also because Shayin might get mad at me if it's too obvious. Smaller means easier to hide, or pass off a toy or something. Either or. For the reagents, I'm thinking to add something new." You take a moment to pat the suspiciously dark Lightsprout bloom you found in the hospital basement. Its bells bob under the pressure, but its black light doesn't flicker. If anything, it grows stronger. Interesting. "But too much of a new thing could have unpredictable results, so I'll temper that with two reagents I'm more familiar with. Crystalvine..." You take a moment to make a face at the little cone of white. "And regular Lightsprout."

"It looks like the new one."

"Yeah, the dark one is definitely a variant of Lightsprout. Looking forward to seeing what the differences are." You pat the regular Lightsprout and watch as the glow from its bells flickers with the impact. "Overall, what I want out of this monster is something stealthy and observant, so I'll be tailoring all of its traits to match that. The real question is what it should look like, what its senses should be like, and what kind of stealth it should be designed for."
I like that he's talking shop with Sasori.

Rolling traits for Unknown Garden Plant 2...
Spell Keywords: Bloom, Vibrance, Pain.

Ooo, so that's why the mutated Lightsprout glowed brighter when you poked it. It's absorbed part of the pain-draining ritual for its own. Now it can harvest its own pain for a burst of power. That could be quite useful going forward.
That's a useful set of traits to have.

D3 => 2
D3 => 2
D5 => 5
Sound, Growth, Vibrance.

The combo you come up with is a simple one. Sound for the primary sense. Growth to amplify the monster's information-gathering capabilities, and potentially other things. Vibrance to magnify things further. Not bad for the first monster you've created on this little planet. Now you just have to decide exactly how this monster should look and function.
Huh that's handy for information gathering.

[X] CRYSTAL GECKO

Seems pretty fitting and pratical.

Bat bat bat bat bat bat bat bat bat bat!

Er, ahem. After careful consideration over a period of time longer than a few seconds, I have decided that the bat is the best option, on account of being the cutest. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.
