Shards of a Broken Sun [Megaten/Shugo Chara/Exalted]

This was supposed to be a no-win scenario. The rest of you didn't make any mistakes. Anyway, I guess… this is where we're at now. Saaya will be keeping the Locket for the foreseeable future, but Amu doesn't need it that much anymore.
I'm not sorry for grasping for the impossible golden perfection, but I hope reevaluating your plans won't be too hard on you.

Question for stunting/using our best dice pool purposes: can Amu shoot her UMI lasers Heart Beams without the Humpty Lock?

Well our surroundings have gotten quite a bit more dangerous after pulling a bit or a miracle move there. So I'd guess evacuating first is a good idea, and then do other things afterwards. Probably.

Well, that went way better than expected. Using psionics first kind of went against the spirit of the plan, but it worked out, and I'd evaluate the info we got as definitely worth it this time.

Credits for beta-ing go to @Nero200, @ShadowAngelBeta and @Quickshot0.

You will note there were no dice rolls in this one. The plan, under the circumstances, didn't need them; but I doubt very much that you'll pull that off twice.
Do we still get the stunt WP/XP bonuses?

There was a single future in which Saaya lived, and was able to shout at her again, and it was the one in which she did this. She could see that future clearly now. Saaya walking next to her, snarking about her choice of clothes while they searched for a cafe to eat lunch in.

She could do the things that led to that future.
"Because you're not a bad person, and you deserve better."
There's a reason she was/is going to be picked as an Exalted.

How's this stunt?

[] Evacuate Saaya, then come back
-[] Summon the Spiral Heart Rod and telekinetically throw desks into the wall until the wall breaks. When you come back to get the other (former? They sure are doing some Guarding right now) Guardians to retreat with you, you see them fighting a strange monster. With feeling instead of thought, you fire a Heart Beam filled with your will to protect at their opponent! (spend 1 WP on dice and 1 WP on psychic combat)

Saaya already blew a hole in the wall, so there's no need for creating further holes, one can just run straight through now, or stunt ones way through I guess.

On a side note I'm a but dubious how effective desks would be against the walls as they're potentially some what sturdy, all that concrete debris around must come from somewhere. Could just be the floor and ceiling, but if you go that far, at least some of the walls tend to get strengthening as well then.

You do, so let me correct the update. Amu is now at 5 WP, not 4.

And I realise I spent half the update justifying Amu doing that at all, yes. Really wasn't planning for this one. 😅
There's a reason she was/is going to be picked as an Exalted.
Amu genuinely changed her mind, is the thing… she wouldn't lie, not even there. Definitely not without that being called out.

Alright, how's this revision? The hole in Saaya made should count as our mandatory environmental interaction. ;)

[] Evacuate Saaya, then come back
-[] Bring Saaya through the hole she blew in the wall, carry her if you have to. When you come back to get the other (former? They sure are doing some Guarding right now) Guardians to retreat with you, you see them fighting a strange monster. With feeling instead of thought, you call the Spiral Heart Rod to your hand, and from it you fire a Heart Beam filled with your will to protect at their opponent! (spend 1 WP on dice and 1 WP on psychic combat)

This went about as well as it could've, so are we deffo fighting now or are you guys just assuming we're gonna be fighting because there is nothing in the options here. I feel it's best to call up Lulu and get more of an idea about well everything. Oh and evac first.

[X] Plan Human Resources
-[X] Evac out the hole, with Saaya, to a safe-ish distance. Transform and pick her up if it helps.
-[X] "Saaya, I'm going to call Lulu. She's trying to get us backup. If she picks up, let her know what's going on and answer any questions she has." Then call Lulu and hand Saaya your phone.
-[X] Transform if you haven't, shield up, and head back. Be ready to fight and/or talk to whatever comes out of the rift, probably both at the same time.

Okay. Situation evaluation again.

First priority is to GTFO. As stated in the update, "Amu needs to evacuate her classroom right now, because the location she's in will have a rift there in another few seconds." We can come back after we drop off Saaya.

JP's is probably too far off to arrive in time to help, and Lulu may still be busy making phone calls on her end. I don't think trying to have a phone call with Lulu is a good use of Amu's time. However, I do think it's a good use of Saaya's time. She's in no state to fight, but she's one of the best-informed people about the rift situation, and hopefully giving her something useful to focus on will help her short-term mental state.

I'm voting to use Amu's phone instead of Saaya's because Lulu is more likely to recognize that number, and because if Lulu or someone from JP's tries to call Amu, it's better if Saaya picks up than if the call goes unanswered because Amu was too busy.

Out-of-character, we have plenty of precedent to suggest communication with whatever emerges should be possible. In-character, we have no reason to think it's not, and we don't actually know in-character that anything that comes out of the rift will be hostile, or if they are hostile, why they're hostile. For all Amu knows, whoever is on the other side of the rift thinks they're under attack. I want to try communication, and fight to restrain and capture, rather than going for the kill ASAP. If we have to go for the kill, I'll vote to go for the kill, of course.

With the right stunt, we should be able to apply Telekinesis and Dexterity to restraining the opponent. Even without a good stunt, we should easily be able to apply Empathy, Charisma, and Presence to demon negotiation, which is good, because those are some of our best stats. Our only offensive combat ability is Thrown... too bad we don't have the lock to boost our illusions. I'd like to telekinetically chuck nets or bolas or something, but we don't have those, and illusions probably won't cut it without the lock.

Amu most likely has a belt, a bag, and a tie. Those seem like some of the most likely assets on hand to be useful for restraining a foe, but it depends heavily on what the foe is. It's just really hard to work out the details of a combat stunt with so little idea of what we're fighting.

The fight is now projected at difficulty 2, where previously it would have been difficulty 1. I don't think this is because of losing the lock - that should only reduce our stats, not raise the target. I think this is because the earlier projection would have been with Saaya holding back the rift (at the cost of her life). The battlefield will be rougher than it would have been otherwise, and enemies may have an easier time coming out of the rift.

At least one of our allies is here, and more are likely to arrive soon. Hopefully, we'll be able to come up with an approach that works with our allies, instead of just acting as a bunch of individuals.

We can't transform. The Humpty Lock has been repurposed as Saaya's life support.
We can. It's just not as good without the lock. Quoting the update:
She'd held onto the amulet for nearly four years. What it did was a mystery even to her. Support her transformations? Let her fly? Yes, but she could do those even without it, most of the time.
And an earlier QM post:
I think you might be suffering a misconception, however. Amu doesn't need the locket in order to transform. It makes it easier, because it makes everything easier, but the transformation is her own doing.

So, fight difficulty got bumped up to 2. Not because Saaya started helping the demon more, but because she was apparently previously helping weaken it before without our notice and now she's not. I'm fine with this result. We can take it without the Lock, especially with Tadase and Nagihiko assisting.

Speaking of which....
Saay looked back at the rift, her eyes wide, her hands trembling. "Okay," she said, then turned to look at the outside wall.

The emerald glow from the humpty lock intensified slightly. Then the wall, already weakened, and entirely without Amu's say-so, exploded.
The wall to 1-A is now down. That's our way out.

My guess is, Nagihiko busted through after they realized through couldn't get through the main doors to 1-B due to the rift. His transformation gives him a basketball that he can use to smash things with. Might have used it to smash the wall. I was kinda expecting either him or Tadase to try it at some point.

No, wait, if that's the "outside" wall, that's one of the ones sealed off by the rift. Does that mean it's the demon coming from the rift through there?
We can't transform. The Humpty Lock has been repurposed as Saaya's life support.
We can. Confirmed by the QM here, with the mechanics of what happens without the lock.

We just don't get the extra Psionic Skill point anymore. We do get a "bonus on the specific acts her charas are/were good at". This might boost Thrown, since Amulet Heart's signature attack was throwing her Heart Rod, not sure.

It said "outside wall", so Saaya might have busted through the rubble blocking the exterior wall instead of the wall to 1-A. @Baughn, confirmation?
Yeah, just realized. Could still be one of our allies busting through from the outside. Or it could be the demon. Would be easier to plan the next action if we'd seen what made the wall explode.

Negotiation gives us more dice, but whether the demon is negotiable with is another kind of dice roll entirely. Pretty impossible to say without seeing the demon first.

At this point, I'm with the people voting to leg it with Saaya and then come back to help Tadase.

....Looking for Miki isn't even possible without evacuating the vicinity, the grade school section is in a whole different part of Seiyo Academy. Why is this even an option.

The glow from the lock sure sounds like it was Saaya, but it could be something else. Either way, the rift is about to overtake our position, so even if it turns out there are hostiles on the other side of the hole, we probably have to push through there anyway.

It's not just more dice - it's the possibility of getting additional intel, and the possibility of a nonlethal resolution to the situation. That said, we don't have enough information to say much about negotiation approaches or combat tactics in our current vote. My vote mostly boils down to "leave with Saaya, get her talking to Lulu, and come back".

Amu has a joint attack with Tadase called Platinum Heart Royale. It was used to purify X-Eggs in canon. I don't know what stats this would use in this quest, I don't think it's Telekinesis, I suspect it would either be Mind Control or Illusion. Possibly the same combo as her Open Heart beam (Mind Control + Presence + Charisma).

No clue what Tadase's ranks in those are, but I suspect fairly high. His Chara is a "king" after all. Would not be surprised if he has 4 in both Charisma and Presence.

@Baughn - Do we get Tadase's character sheet? The guy not only had a crush on Amu before, she admittedly spends half her free time with him, surely that's enough trust and familiarity to warrant seeing his stats?

EDIT: Another question, while I'm at it - how long would it take her to get to the grade school section and back, while carrying Saaya, if she were transformed and using her Heart Speeders (i.e. literally flying).
My vote mostly boils down to "leave with Saaya, get her talking to Lulu, and come back".
Just for the record, Lulu was the one who messed with her Heart's Egg turning her into Hinamori Dream the last time she fought Amu. Might bring back some bad memories. I mean, she'd probably still be OK with the Humpty Lock, but man would that be a heck of a conversation.

I mean, I kinda wanna see Saaya's reaction, but not if it gives her a heart attack, we're trying to keep her alive.

Amu is still linked to Miki psychically. She's her Chara+, after all. She can send out an SOS that way and ask for help / questions.
Plan Human Resources
Lulu was the one to do a decent chunk of Saaya's trauma / damage.
Would be better to use Ami's phone to contact via Miki, I think, rather than risk Saayas stability.
Miki can fly, so she might be able to meet us outside if she zips out a window or something.

We should probably make a note that Saaya was able to basically single action blow through a wall that would have taken Amu sustained effort and time to do so.

@Baughn Can we see anything through the hole in the wall at the moment, without taking the evaluate action?
