Rings and Grudges (A LOTR/Warhammer Fantasy Crossover)

I get this doesn't exactly relate to the current issue but should our diplomacy in relations with other factions be updated as well? Also side note, whatever happen to those grimborn fellows, I haven't seen a reference to them sense turn 9 or 10 if my memory serves correct

They are operating still in Uvors hold... the problem is there's been so much imigration, they're barely even 1% of that population anymore

The rest of the Grimborn are staying in the north close to where Thorins halls will be

Ok so housing and farms i guess for the next couple of turns but overall this is a good thing. Funnily enough this may actually make that porthold something worthwhile as it could serve as a population valve for all these dwarves.

Still remember guys, we SUSPECT food and drinks are needed, we have no idea if it his the case, we just expanded drinks by a lot and Imperial said we do not really need action for housing

I find it uniquely hilarious that the grimborn were driven from the hold simply by other dwarves being around. If that doesn't tell you how cowardly and non-confrontational these guys are i don't know what else will.

Well you were doing well, with maybe a need to fix your food supplies this turn, till the 1000 dwarves (for your hold) arrived. To fix that you just need to negotiate with the Hobbits and Gondor again.

For housing... Just try not to import more people till the fall of Erebor... Passively you will get more housing anyway as mines are excavated and over time converted into living space. maybe at the rate of 50-70 dwarves getting housed a year... Finding new prospects far away and turning them into colonial holds is essentially your equivelent of building new residence halls (dwarves just don't do the latter by intention - it sort of just organically coalesces over centuries).

The whole idea for the coal mine getting converted, is its far away and already partially excavated meaning it can be 'easily' upgraded into a colony (which didn't originally happen as when we dug it out, there were only a few hundred Dawi - and we were rationing miners). They can then prospect for resources in their own region.

Think I read this a while back and it only clicked now that I had yet to answer so sorry for the delay, it will be as I have a few idea's on how to get Gromril into your guys hands mostly finding it with exploration, though that is one option the other was just going with Mithril is Gromril since their actually called the same thing though Mithril is the lowest form of Gromril. which is likely as even your most skilled smiths might only have an inkling on how to forge it properly with how rare it became.
Excuse me @Mad0Slayer, warhammer fantasy have Mithril too according to warhammer fantasy lexicanum.
Do you really need to add Gromril into the quest?

Mithril

Mithril is the most common form of Gromril. It is refined by smelting to remove most impurities. It is twice as durable as Steel and weighs one-fifth as much. It also accepts runes and enchantments as readily as any other metal.

Interlude: Rise of the Machine

Firelight flickered off the Cobalt walls of the hold, as you released a foggy breath amongst the sound of gear's churning and steam bellowing, your eyes squinting through the misted-over goggles while watching the lumbering form of your clan's first war Golem marched forward, the sigil of your clan marking it's freshly forged and attached armour. The Visage of Morgrim glared ahead, as Master Engineer Snorri piloted his creation.

You felt Dromak tug on your shoulder as Balor carried him your son glancing between you and the Barag-Undi, your son staring in adoration at the work of the clan. "Can I make one of those Pa?" his whisper drawing a smile from you.

Patting him on the shoulder "You can, though you'll have to learn like Garik is if you wish to claim it as your own". Your voice drawing a snort from your Wife whilst Balor grunted, glancing their way you gave Idun a nod "Watch over him I need to speak with the engineers and whether or not this thing's viable with its drift".

She gave you a peck on the cheek as you saw Balor roll his eyes before taking your son and wife off to see the rest of your family, your eyes going to the war machine before you, its name still being hotly debated amongst the guild but it would ultimately fall to Snorri to name it, though as you looked it over you found it much changed from the prototype that had marched beside you.

This Golem was nearly double the size and was probably larger than even most trolls of the old world and after the additional armour and gears to make the weapon work it would no doubt be only larger, while the three compartments that would house the Engineers would be sealed behind Thick armour shaped in the visage of the ancestors, the only opening been its eyes which were covered with an amber glass while a weapon slit sat beneath each viewport ready to be opened should those within wish to use their guns.

A hatch at the top opened as Snorri popped his head out his face covered in sweat as he glanced around his black beard tightly bound over his bare torso as he gave you a resolute nod. "My Thane, glad you could make it" his voice travelled around the hall as he used a few handlebars to climb down and past the two arm compartments while a swarm of the clan's engineers went to work on inspecting the machine while apprentices stared greedily in your direction.

Crossing your arms you glanced towards the machine "Aye, wouldn't miss it, though I wish my father could have seen it introduced, would have been a true sight for him, still, it's a bit bulkier than I thought it would be, will it actually accomplish what it was built for?" you questioned as you shot a distrustful look at the machine.

He grunted before shouting out a warning towards one of the engineers who was getting a little too handsy as he turned to you, "It's not bad but at best this is a better model and any built to its design will suffer for it, not bad mind you but that hammer is a pain to aim properly and Valaya forbid I try it while on uneven ground, would probably tip the thing over and that's the least of the issues."

You frowned as he trailed off in thought while looking like he was searching for words "Did I actually waste the hold's resources with this, especially when I could have had a cannon or grudge thrower commissioned" your voice grating through the hall.

Snorri rolled his eyes while muttering about traditionalists while you spotted a few elders nod in agreement with you, "Aye it'll work but it needs refining and outside it been a tad unwieldy and hotter than a forge it'll work fine, though maybe not after prolonged use, I give it maybe six hours before it needs to be shut down to cool off after intense operations or long marches" He said whilst shooting a glare at his elders while the younger engineers nodded in approval.

Letting out a sigh you glanced between Snorri and the machine and gave a minute nod "Fine, we'll see how it does, though unless you petition for more I'll not build another till I see more refined plan's" receiving a nod you turned to leave whilst speaking over your shoulder "Have it prepared for its true unveiling, a feast is in order, I suppose for such a momentous occasion." You said as you tried to ignore the need to berate such forward-thinking ideals.

***

Athur stood beside his king as he felt himself surrounded by Khazad, the dwarfs of the Stormhammer clan grinning madly as they chatted between one another, their voices not reaching him or any of his fellow Grimborn. Letting out a sigh he glanced at Uvor whilst shooting a weary eye at some of the Broadbeam elders "So, I hear you finally choose a wife out of the prospects within our home?" His question drew a few curious gazes from various leaders.

Uvor eyed him, smiling softly. "Aye, I wanted to hold off till you returned, Athur..." He looked to his left at Gotri who was listening to his son, perched on the shoulders of that ancient elder. "I know you don't agree with all my choices as your prince, and now king. But never doubt for a moment, that I don't count your council as dearer to my heart than any other in our hold..." The moodiness of the old dwarf faded, as he looked agape at the boy. "I... Thank you lad." Uvor nodded thankfully before continuing. "If it won't trouble you greatly, could you look into potential marriage prospects for me." His face scrunched up for a moment. "I... I know its not traditional, but I seek to marry a woman that can benefit my people." Athur stared at the boy. "If that is your wish lad, so be it..."

This was probably the biggest spanner in the works his faction had faced, long after even the constant arrivals, that had whittled down their carefully grown control over the ancient hold. If Uvor was being honest here, which was no doubt seeing how the lad could probably be conned by a hobbit, he was willing to sacrifice his happiness, and love, for his people. It was almost inspiring, if it weren't for the headache it was already causing...

They were interrupted as Gotri moved away from his giddy son, and marched out in front of the assembled leaders. Uvor grumbled under his breath as Gotri began speaking towards the dwarf surrounded by truly ancient dwarfs their weary eyes looking over all those assembled judgementally, the young king lifted atop a stone Throne. "I am sure you are all wondering why I called you here and in truth, I'm sure you're all looking forward to good food and drink but that will have to wait" Gotri's eyes swept over the hall his voice resonating through the hall "Our hold is a young one, barely three decades old and we have come far in that time, and while we have had our hardships it is time for a new page in our history one with which we shall grow and become ever stronger and to mark this new era, my Clan presents the first of its war machines built within these hallowed halls." He said before turning to his clan his voice changing to their rougher and harsher language as a gate at the end of the hall was opened the sound of something churning against one another while a sound he had never heard before roared through the hall.

A giant troll like thing lumbered through the gate. Gasps filled the hall while people began to faint, its feet slamming into the rock causing it to shake, its amber eyes glowed with a dull light glaring at all those before it.

Athur felt his heart skip a beat, as Uvor stood frozen in place, Whispers from Gotri's folk filled the air as they excitedly talked about beast whilst the Khazad began to pray to Aule out of fear and for preservation.

Though before Athur could reach for his axe the face of the metal dwarf popped up, revealing Gotri's people, Athur felt relief flow through him as he glared at the three of them as they looked around pleased with themselves. As Gotri himself nodded seemingly pleased with the reaction before he called for a feast to begin, soon many of his kin drank deeply no doubt to help quell their nerves.

As the night progressed Athur could not help but wonder about the strange construct, for it was like no machine he had ever seen before and more like foul sorcery whispered about by his kin, but then if that were true he doubted his people would be where they were now, still he would keep a close eye on things, especially as his King had fallen into a deep silence as he glanced warily in the direction of Gotri and their strange beast.

Golem Quality Roll: 27 (It'll only last a century before it requires a rehaul and will cost a bit more to upgrade) (These roll's will probably disappear after you get the proper hall expansion to produce them nicely, till then your getting quirky stuff)

???: 61 (You'll have to figure this out)

Also, the Golem needs a name, not sure what but I'll leave it up to you guys to come up with a few it will be a vote in the next turn.

The main turn is done just needs some cleanup and editing. (Dunno when I will post it though)

Interestingly "Kazad" means Fortress in Khazalid
and Dum means Doom or darkness.

So when the Dawi first heard about "Khazad Dum" they must have heard "Fortress of Doom".
It's interesting how Khazad, the general word used to describe the LoTR Dwarves translates to Fortress in the Dawi language.

Apparently, the LoTR Dwarves have a war chant that is very similar to that of the Dawi.

"Axes of the Dwarves! The Dwarves are upon you!"

Well I don't think dwarf Indi, can get an even shorter short round... We could find a Willie though

Ered Luin Dwarfs finding you: 98+10(Shared mining rights)+20(Well known)= 450 Khazad Show up at your hold (250 Broadbeams and 200 Firebeards)

The training grounds were rather empty for once, now that the Firebeards were starting their futile 'strikes' until you relented on the guilds ban. Ka'renn's voice could still be heard echoing out from the tent city alongside a hoard of shouting for the kvinn to shut up as people tried to sleep.

The moon was high in the sky, causing the stone of the hall to glow with a deep blue hue, as light descended via 'skylights' the khazad had dug out in their free time. To your left Balor was overseeing training of the beardlings. Balin, amusedly used to be one of them, but now he had the excuse of 'packing' for the long trek back to his home hold, as he guided your cousin Gotrisson east to Dale.

"Dammit beardlings put your backs into it!" You gave a nod towards Balor as he let loose another shout, the elder was moving a bit lethargic, the time of night seeming to get to him. Upon noticing you he loosed a glare, turning away you let out a sigh until he gave the order to halt.

Balor tapped his foot seeming to be lost in his own thoughts, while the last of the thunderers proceeded to the watered kegs (they'd tried water, but then the beardlings kept spiking it with Lhunbrynz...). "Avoiding your study I see" He finally said; while you gave him a glare of your own, the jawls of his still hidden face raised in what was likely a grin.

You let out a sigh "Just delaying the inevitable. Do you think I should post a sign on that door, for all complaints to be filed in the Throne Room? Or should I invest in runes of deterrent?" The elder, your grandfather in law snorted. "Sending them all to my little Idun." He gave a gravely bark. "Lazy Beardling more like, even worse than your grandfather. And he ran the clan when we were more than triple our current number, and had to deal with trading with at least 15 clans; and unlike you actually bothered to learn how to tinker."

You frowned at that point though did not refute it. It was true that your ancestor had it harder. You were starting from scratch with strange, albeit reasonable challenges in the forms of the local umgi, khazad and elgi. Though you doubted he had to deal with the pains of establishing a new home only to get flooded by the population of a Grey mountains hold every year...

Tired of the current conversation you thought back to Dromaks words earlier in the day. "On another subject, I happened to hear the most interesting story from Dromak did you really plait your…"

You actually turned around with that one, levelling a glare at you "Not a word, otherwise, I'll set the Moonacre Khazad from grumil's lot as vengeance".

You kept your grin, but remained silent. "Understood, so what's this I'm hearing about more training..." He looked down too a book in his arms. That Klinkarhun reading the letters, 'Rangers Report - year .. of the new Karaz Ankor.' Eying the pages warily you sighed. "Another bad year?"

Your only answer was a blasted yes... Morgrim you needed a beer.

[x]Settling a grudge Aid with Silent Peak: You have yet to settle your clan's grudge against the mountain, something you will ensure is done, though your clan is small so you will settle it though there is sure to be plenty of stone left around, send word to the umgi that they can use it, especially as you abore waste.

Balin's Journel

Day 789- Well today seems, Mahal be thanked, rather reasonable, at least compared to what I am used to in this hold of madness. While the Dawi's typical pettiness, which can put even my most Royal cousins to shame, is legendary theres been some talk of them declaring a grudge upon a mountain. At this point I'm just rolling with it, though there is potential that the king could ensnare them into a contract seeing how nobody wants to buy their soon to be accessible stone... Erebor despite its many strengths has long has issues with finding new building material after the follies of our kings grandfather, when he permitted the hollowing of the hold in pursuit of the roots of the mountain...

Though I doubt that such a thing is possible, I have yet to see these dwarfs give up on something so I will have to see to believe here. I have much to write but it will have to end here for now as Gotrisson has decided we are to drink again followed by their gruelling training, even if it has gotten easier.

Day 850 - Ancestors, thank Durin I'm leaving soon, the madness has spread. Now the Broadbeams are getting involved with 'kulling the mountain!', even good lord Uvor (surprisingly good company over an elf wine) is involved. Apparently, it's a 'cultural exchange' experience, and will be used to help 'familiarise' good khazad with dawi mining equipment... I have seen many a drill before but nothing like that machine, it hisses and wails every so often and is so damming loud!

Recent attempts to 'wound the mountain', have even given reports of open rivers of gold and silver getting revealed. They're even debating in Thane Gotri's throne room (instead of his study for once) about if they should treat this as 'dawiguild'.

Madness absolute madness!

The Dunedain will now start building their own defences in the valley as you commence with the grudge of removing a peak.

[x] Establish an Expedition group with the Umgi Rangers and Khazad:
Quite frankly you'd rather you didn't have the headaches working with 'this lot' can bring. But bringing your hot blooded kin to heel, and focusing it onto at least somewhat beneficial paths is probably going to be important in the coming years. From your short trips into the former realm of Nogrod and Arnor, there's certainly much to learn from.
Especially with what the Cult of Gazul dealt with, so you suppose it's not entirely useless, still a few of the clan might chaff at being sent outside the hold but since they haven't formed a true bloc, the researchers and scholars of your clan have been pressing to investigate and explore the ruins of Eriador. Your clan even with the new arrivals cannot do this alone. You also are completely unfamiliar with either Dunedain or Khazad ruins; so combining their greater manpower with your clans researching skills should benefit all... Now if only you didn't have to explain to them for the tenth time not to take the nautilus out west....

Watching as the valley below your breath misting over as the Khazad tents below slowly began to grow as the Khazad moved within.

A grunt came from the side, glancing you gave a nod to the ranger Elder "Kurgan, I'd have thought you'd be on your way to the umgi with their latest missive".

You saw him shrug whilst pointing off to the side through an embrasure "I will be, already have the short beards and beardlings assembling a caravan for our journeys, though I doubt we'll set out to soon, things to organise and umgi to check whilst you negotiate and thanks to your patronage I'll be ensuring the Khazad are armed at least properly but that will take time." He said his voice carrying on the wind as you spotted the group he was talking about a small foundry carriage coming together.

Nodding you leaned against a wall to look at him "Good and hopefully it will help to settle the beardlings and shortbeards while you mould them to a more proper line of thinking, don't need a bloody radical overseeing all of this, might get a report that they collapsed an ancient tomb with their untested ideas?"

Kurgan nodded approvingly while glancing at your guard "Agreed, still don't like that damned Golem an affront to the guild with how it was built, but the clan has bigger issues to deal with than that, though I'll help the clan but I should be off and leave you to the negotiations Gotri, let me know when it's all settled." He said whilst giving a nod to Elof as he disappeared down the stairs.

Shaking your head you turned back to look at the tent city with a growl, you hoped this venture would prove profitable but it would not matter if you didn't get it started, stretching you turned back to the hold as you considered just how to hammer out the contracts that were about to be made.

***

A light shower of clapping echoed from the room as Kurgan say back down, taking his place beside you; five representatives, not including you were present. Arathorn, Uvor, Lady Bahariel, an elf called Nowë; and of course young Balin, who was busy making raki scratchings in his notebook. All looked at the proposal with great interest, but confliction.

Around the round table, sitting opposite to you, Arathorn was the first to make his voice known. "I am grateful master Kurgan for the offer you are giving my people." The elder snorted but nodded respectfully. "I will be willing to offer what scholars and warriors i can spare to aid you in this 'guilds' endeavours." The two of you hid your grins. "But.." You held your breath. "I have a special commission for the guild, to be achieved as soon as it is able, in the icy waters of Forochel." His eyes never left the small model Nautilus in his hands.

You finally exhaled in relief. That was the first one down. Your eyes turned to Uvor. The young khazad was beaming, marvelling at some of the relics of his hold that the elder had brought with him. "You can truly help rediscover the works of my fathers?" Kurgan nodded at the kingling. The dwarfling shivered in anticipation. "Then you have my people's backing honoured elder."

Two down, three to go; you changed your target to the surprisingly still youthful Lady of Rosselond. "I too am particularly interested in this Nautilus you claim to have access too..." Kurgan uttered a light growl but let you take over. "The Nautilus is currently being used to explore the ruins of Nogrod, my Rinn. If you wish to have an exploration of the coasts, then we'll need a complete re-haul, if not a new ship entirely." Her dark eyes flickered in annoyance, but she too nodded. "I look forward to any services your people can offer mine, in rediscovering Gondors lost glory..."

Your eyes switched to the final relevant leader present. The elfling sported a head of grey hair, a fine well-trimmed beard that brushed against his dainty elf clothes. His eyes too were focused on the nautilus, which the dunedain leader was only now, reluctantly, passing over. "A submersible craft..." He exhaled, closing his eyes. "I have walked this earth young Dawi since nearly the wakening of my people." His eyes opened once again, their bright light for now dulled with age. "Never to see the light of the Great Trees, or the teachings of the Valar; but I remember the lands of Doriath, the walls of Gondolin, the harbours of Brithombar..." Tears rolled down his face. "If you are willing, i wish to see them again. Regardless of their fate."

You looked at him warily. "I'll... see what I can do."

Ancestors was it going to be difficult, but if the elgi was this invested, you might be able to pull some strings with the engineers guild.

You were just about to continue when a cough rang around the room. Young Balin looked up from his notes, a sharp look in his eye. "Most fascinating, master Kurgan, thane Gotri." He picked through several pages, picking at them with his quill, before holding your gaze. "But I fear I have several questions for you. not least of which is what are you getting out of this..."

A flash of panic filled your mind while Kurgan blurted out a quick go-around answer; you'd been hoping to avoid this. Nobody was fond of contracts, but even more, negotiating them. Balin held your gaze his sharp eyes unblinking until after a wait, you reluctantly pushed a 15ft scroll over the table into his waiting hands. Pausing for a moment, draining his mug, Balin dramatically rolled it out bit by bit as he read it. The surrounding umgi and elgi gave him weird looks, but gained increasing curiosity as the dwarf got closer and closer to his target... Ancestors you had been so close! Uvor was too drunk to care for it, and the ambition on the faces of the umgi would have made them all too willing to sign anything!

"Aha!" Balin finally reached what he was looking for. Drawing out a monocle, which he claimed was from a 'friend' of his, he outlined the clause you had been worried about. "As outlined in paragraph 5, page 13. All recovered artefacts will be split with seventy percent going towards the Engineers guild of clan Silverhammer of Karak Lhune, to reimburse their respective parties and backers. 30% will be shared with the native investors, with the offer for reimbursement of artefacts for gold... These distributions will be based on totality, not estimated value.

You groaned, as the rooms mood shifted, while Kurgan went as white as a norscan. "I do hope this at least will renegotiable." The smug ravenhaired dwarf said, with a knowing smile. Dammit! Found out by a beardling of all things! You offered the assembled and increasingly furious leaders a bashful smile... "Ah, yes yes, I think we can."

***

There were finally nods once again as the last rounds of renegotiations ended. "Good and as outlined in Appendix B and C the guild will be based in the city of Ost Ithil. Be overseen by a council of all five polities. Then in amendment 27 dash 2B, any historical Items are to be returned to their rightful owners, with the discoverers being compensated for up to 50% of the recovered bounty. The bartering of gold and gems, can be used as compensation; with any conflicts to ownership being reviewed by Guild Council. In the case of the people or kin, of a discovery no longer remaining for treasure with no historical, cultural or realm significance then we must refer to the rules on paragraph 2, page 3 for equal distribution amongst the party." You took a sip before Balin continued, hearing an increasingly despairing groan emerge from the now drunk off his rocker Master Engineer beside you.

"In the case of discovering the rightful owner, we then must take into account Appendix H for the appropriate response and recompense of the discovery, with the total reimbursement, should they seek to reclaim it being 1/5 of the treasures total worth". You nodded begrudgingly, your visions of an ever growing vault, filled to the ceiling vanishing with every word...

Finally, with begrudging elation you observed each leader put their various signatures or applied their signets to the contract. After finally adding your own, you poured yourself another drink. Three barrels already having disappeared.

Now if only you didn't have that elf constantly asking for refills...

It almost gave you a heart attack at Amon-Mingol when you learned of this weakness. Mayhaps you could break this 'cycle' before it's too late? (requires nearby Dunedain presence)

A Few Definitions:
Padostiri - combination of Pad (walk), with ost (fortress) = Walking fortress (testudo)
Objective: Capture the Fort

Bjorn looked down from the fort's wall with grim anticipation as the forces arrayed against them seemed to stop in shock at the new fort built within the valley, letting out a chuckle he glanced to his Thane "Your sure this is a good idea?" He asked whilst he hefted up his shield the umgi coming to the front.

He heard Gotri humm "It is, the Throng has grown complacent in these land's, we've also been in worst spots that this" He said resolutely as a hail of arrows rained down upon the hoarding, a few of them passing through the gaps to slap into good dawi shields before falling to the ground.

Letting out a sigh he glanced at his Thane "Not many and last time I remember we had such incentives, from the Thane of Clan Stouthammer promising us a Keg of Bugmans XXXXX" He let his voice fill with wistful memory before trailing off suggestively.

Gotri eyed the elder warily, before snorting "Sjofn's Ale is off limit's and we've barely had anything of such quality in year's and it'll serve better once aged a bit longer, but I'm pretty sure she's experimenting with her ale so it's only a matter of time before she figures out another of her old clan's recipes."

Bjron shrugged unrepentantly "had to try, it's ale worthy of an ancestor after all. Looks like we should steel ourselves, umgi are forming up behind the Khazad."

Gotri shot an appraising eye to the force marching towards the fort "Looks more like a rabble to me, I bet a round of Ale at the Golden Moon that they don't make it past the gate"

Licking his lips thirstily he grinned "You have a deal my Thane I'm sure the Throng will be suitably motivated, a shame all this new shade will lessen our thirst". He stated just loud enough for a beardling to hear.

You chuckled as you glanced at the umgi the word of good ale passing quickly amongst the Throng as you joined in the clan's chanting.

Balin stood atop a small hill, telescope to his eye, as he relayed his observation to his company. At his side Lord Uvor and the Dunedain of Arnor & Gondor, observed a hastily constructed recreation of the fort, on a cleared bit of ground. The Arnorian leader stroked his beard intently, while his southern cousins were busy ensuring their blades were sufficiently blunted. "I see Lord Gotri, and Elder Balor. They're above the gatehouse, no spyglass in sight. Seem to be talking about ale."

Uvor looked to his Ereborian attache, "What tells you that?" Balin gave a snort. "Gotri has the same tic as his cousin. As soon as you mention drinking their hidden stockpile, they start playing with their brow whiskers..."

The Firebeard lord nodded. "I'll remember that..." He said with a chuckle. "Now. " He looked over to the dunedain. "How do we proceed."

Arathorn turned his gaze to the real fortifications. "I'd suggest making them fight in the shade." He shook his head, before reaching for his gigantic bow, easily the height of a Breean manling. "Their forces will have too many shields and thickened armour to gather attrition, but so long as we coordinate them with the main advance we should provide enough suppressive fire against the defenders.

Balin nodded, before gazing back at the fort for any further changes... While it was nothing that could compare to the defences at Raven hill, never mind the fortress that they had built for the manlings of Ost Ithil, the 'Dawi' of clan Silverhammer had been very busy since the terms of the current war game had been struck. The attack should likely go forward immediately, he noted, observing the beginning of trenches and a two-part gatehouse in development, though he doubted even those could help the small force contend with nearly three and a half thousand warriors.

The gondorians, Captain Imrazôr, formerly of Pelargir, looked up from his javelin (thankfully not a true Lebannin weapon, otherwise even the dawi would have banned its presence). "I'll command the men under my command to form a 'padostiri' formation." He shared a glance with Lord Aragost, who put away his short sword. "My men will follow en-suit, I remember the crossbows of the Dawi all too well; and have no intention of catching a bolt to my chest, no matter how much they claim it will shatter on impact."

Uvor smiled. "I will proceed maintaining a shield cover. Sadly We haven't fully designed a proper shield for shell formations. The Dawi have called it un-dwarvern, while the Rangers are producing their own at a snai.... No, a Dawi's pace." The five of them chuckled deeply. Dawi were fast at setting up fortifications or to wage war, but to get them to do anything else in a practical timeframe was laughable...

He turned to Balin, who put aside the telescope. "I will lead the goats into the fortress after we have breached the gatehouse." The raven-haired dwarf eyed his nearby goat. "And if necessary have Nessi and company climb the debris and stoneworks around the fort to scale the wall if need be." He rubbed his rear tenderly. "Dear Mahal I hope they aren't needed for that..."

The goat in question baaed, before bringing her head down to munch on something. "Aye, I really hope..." Balin's eyes went to the goats mouth where a large scroll could be seen being chewed. "Nessi! My report!"

Balin, his mane now hidden behind a war helm Gotrisson had gifted him for his birthday earlier in the year, took notice to stroke the stroppy goats mane, as he trotted towards the fort. Already the combined dunedain force were hailing the fort with arrow volleys. Each company firing at different times to maintain a constant suppressive rate of fire. It was with elation, as they reached within 100ft of the ramparts that he still could spot the defenders struggling to peek out from behind the crenelations; the odd 'murder gap' sending a bolt every so often, as the Dawi within struggled to reload, aim and fire with any level of proficiency and speed.

The infantry were advancing slowly, with his own forces scouting out for traps; their shields still in protective formations designed to keep out any arrow fire, sans the heaviest of ordinance (which was thankfully banned, much to the engineer's complaints). Within range, he signalled for his company to charge - dashing the last leg of the journey.

Assessing the trench works, it was amusing to notice just how far ahead the dawi were. If they had started their approach even half an hour later, there may already have been 'Quarrelers', firing at the incoming forces head on - a much more painful volley than a usually glancing overhead shot. 'Thank Mahal we made the call when we did', he contemplated. Overhead grumbles of frustration rang down, as the khazad, Broadbeam and Firebeard alike followed their Ereborian commander into the 'breach'.

It was with an amused snort (followed by covering his eyes from blast of arrow splinters, from a recent low-flying volley), that Balin noticed just how sloped the walls were... Perfect for halting most siege engines, like towers, but not for other means. He whispered soothingly to Nessi, before blowing his horn, signalling the first sign of an advance.

As one the Khazad rode back from the trenches, getting into line, before another horn blow filled the valley. "Yanâd Durinul!" He gazed grinning into the riders, horn at the ready. "Ihgirî ni-hun!" He blew deeply, just as the Dunedain ceased firing. The army of goats charged the dawi lines, their infantry allies now within distance of the trenches.

Shouts rang from the defending Dawi, who now began to risk the now absent dunedain volleys and started to desperately fire into the rampaging goat riders - scores of dwarves flew off their mounts - the goats barely noticing their lost weight as their riders scrawled in the dirt. Scaling the walls, Nessi vaunted over the dawi defences...

Only to fall onto hardened stone. The goat buckling in fright, the shock sending her rider reeling off. Balin barely had time to roll out of the way as another goat landed where his head would have been, its own rider sent flying. Panicked bleats filled the air, as the goats began to escape, funnelled out of the now wide open gate, as their riders were left sprawled in the courtyard.

Using his axe to steady himself, narrowly dodging another goat, Balin took in his surrounding. Above him was a massive wall, filled with defenders, almost hugging the crenelations. He blinked... Where was the walkways? He barely had time to think as the now laughing Dawi, cocked their crossbows, before firing into the downed dwarves.

The first sign of trouble Uvor noticed was the panicked bleats emerging from the fort. The goat riders hadn't even finished scaling the walls, before much to his horror, the gates to the fort opened up, disgorging hundreds of terrified goats stampeding out right into the ranks of a slow-moving Gondorian testudo.

Shock cries came from the gondorians, as the men broke rank. their commanders yelling to reform. Any attempt to wear out the stampede, by obstructing them, vanished as the men fled to the sides of the stampede, only barely escaping getting trampled by the fleeing goats. Victorious cries emerged from the walls, with Dawi cackling from behind their crenelations. Soon the twang of crossbows filled the air, followed by the thud of bolts, and groans of pain.

The goats charging at him, Uvor shouted for a rudimentary testudo to form, the khazad around him forming a cramped wedge barely in time, as the goats overtook them. Dwarves across the line shrieked as various parts of the shell crumpled under the weight; thank Mahal none broke from the strain.

The last of the goats had finally left them, before a new sound began...

Schwinnnggggg! Thud!

Uvor crouched down, bracing as his shield was nearly wrenched off his arm, a volley of bolts rammed into the formation. shields splintered, or cracked as shots embedded into the hardwood and steel. Yelps rang out through the line, as already exhausted troops buckled under the relentless volleys. Behind him, the Dunedain were panickedly losing shots at the fort, but it was broken, filled with more yells as the rangers hastily evaded the still running goats.

Schwinnnggggg! Thud!

Schwinnnggggg! Thud!

Schwinnnggggg! Thud!

"Morgorth take you!" He screamed as his arm went numb. The shield repeatedly bashed against his helm with a great clang as each volley landed. More yelps rang from the line, as dwarves dropped, their thick armour and gamberson thankfully dulling the clearly powerful bolts that slammed into them.

Arathorn watched on as the attacking forces collapsed within minutes of arrival. He could do little to assist, risking injuring 'hostages' in the fort, and threats about the worth of the goats making him stay his hand from halting the stampede.

With what will he could gather, he commanded his men to fire at the fort, trying to dull the assault upon the khazad, who were holding on barely against the hail of crossbow bolts. As the last of the dwarves dropped, remaining 'dead' (mainly out of hope the volleys would stop), Captain ...... approached. "My chief perhaps it would be wise..."

Arathorn gave him a half-hearted glare. "Raise the flag... Illuvatar be merciful that was a thrashing..."

Gotri grumbled overlooking the 'enemy' as the rangers raised the white flag. Grabbing a speaking horn, he signalled the game was over, much to the groaning relief of the downed.

He was just about to head for the stairwell to descend, when a loud cough reached his ears...

His eyes met those of the now toothy grinned elder was holding out an empty flask expectingly...

Falstad looked at the lot before him with something approaching disdain, many of those under his teachings having performed adequately enough but he felt that they would only serve as fodder against a proper urk, though with this worlds threats, he gave them at least passable odds. "Now that you lot know the basics of swinging those damned pick's I expect you in the warrior hall training your kin and maybe one day I'll trust you lot to not get yourselves killed, until then your dismissed and I suggest you work on getting more of your gear settled before the Throng is called to march." He barked watching as they seemed to stand a little straighter as they departed.

Shaking his head he turned to the hold looking forward to seeing his wife and son's after dealing with such pathetic dawi, still, they would be shaped and maybe one day they prove their use after so many boons.

You looked around the darkened halls with an appraising eye, assessing the once hall, now Deep. Beside you the pale-eyed khazad leader of the 'Azanûl', as the 'runelord' Broadbeams were beginning to be called by their kin. By this point, you honestly smelled a schism right on the horizon. With your kin becoming increasingly off-put by their highly orthodox and religious clan members.

The elder, Thrûmbar sat on a nearby bench, a small smile on his lips surveying the works, before giving a nod. Around you the team of workers cheered, even bringing the often quite serious broadbeams to elation as beer was shared and the odd horn of 'umgi' wine was drunk. You approached the elder dawi, glancing around. "So, I take it the new hall's to your desires?" your eyes were drawn to the ceiling. A dark blue plain, littered with tiny white dots. If you were not a ranger, you'd almost mistake it for the heavens... At the centre, a great ebony face was carved into the ceiling, made from Gondorian Marble (sadly, the rock you'd claimed from that blasted peak had no bidders) While great silvery pillars glowed from rune light. Quite frankly while never visiting the place, this appeared to follow quite closely the report of that cavern they'd been trapped in for Valaya only knows how long....

The elder gave a small nod "Aye, I dare say it will do, will take some getting used to but we've got all we need and plenty of room to grow" His smile faltered for a moment as his milky eyes glanced to the side, towards the younger members of his group "It's also for the best really, we've had little time to adjust and between our sight and so many other's… it's good to have a home with which we are free." He said the elder's voice growing a tad worn. Understandingly you passed him some wine.

[x] Excavate and Build a Miners Hall:
The Stone and earth hold a wealth that the hold needs to prosper, though the Hold is a great distance from the largest of deposits in the earth, thankfully a bit of work should make things easy enough especially if a hall is built so that the riches of the earth can be stored there for transport instead of having to haul it back to the hold. Of course, it should also, help with preparing for future mine expansions(Reduces mine construction time while allowing for individual mine upgrades, it will also auto prospect every few turns and set up mines for what is found without requiring an action.) Alrik gave an appraising eye of the miner's hall much of it in much-needed refinement and reinforcement in his humble opinion though he doubted that would come soon, stretching a little he grunted as he spotted another set of miners set out the Khazad already keen on digging ever deeper into the mountain as if they wished to hollow out the hold into a great pit.

Grunting he turned away from them as a wave of cold anger bubbled within, the year's trials long due to their incompetence, though he knew that would not last, especially with how many he'd already sent a number away due to their sheer idiocy, it was bad enough in his opinion that they couldn't cut stone at a good rate for their age but to disrupt him whilst he was planning would not do.

Something he'd had more than a few longbeards thrown out for, master masons his ass, he'd seen mere apprentices do better, no it was better that he have them removed so to not insult the guild and Grungni before they inevitably brought a hall down on those within but he would admit a few were adequate and improving to a desired level, even if they were still a rough force they would soon have enough dawi well learned to see them off. At least he hoped so, the clan was tethering dangerously over a chasm with all the work and training that had to be done, though with another proper stone mason clan almost set up he could rest easy.

Letting out a sigh he glared at a group of Khazad apprentices making them scurry up the tunnels to the hold, a good thing as he needed a drink after having to rely on Thane Gotri it was needed with how some of their kin had acted. Still, the commission was done, though he'd have to send apprentices down at some stage to clean up some of the rougher edges.

[x] Expand the Warrior Hall with a Reckoner Hall:
It has long since been known that grudges have cause the dawi of the Karaz-Ankor a great deal of issues, thankfully most of it's issues have been mitigated by the use of dawi well versed in dawi lore and stubbornness, they just need a proper place to settle their disputes amongst the hold. (Ensures that some of the worst events won't show up unless you fail a lot of rolls and keeps most dawi based guilds above grumbling for a time.)(Increases Grumbling Cap from 3 to 15)

Alrik glared at the chasm as it gloated at him and his inability to continue with the plans for the hall, his hand itching towards his personal Grudge book for ruining his plans and having ensured he would have to suffer the Thane's glare.

Though as he looked it over he grinned nastily as a few ideas came to mind his hand grabbing a nearby mining pick as he got to work, intent on avoiding the Thane and at least providing him a report on the much improved Reckoners Hall, even if it was going to be delayed a bit.

Firebeard Stonemason Hall: The Khazad of the firebeards are said to be stout warriors and even better drinkers, you've found them lacking in both but their not terrible shapers of stone, so putting a few resources aside to let them expand might just come in handy, even if much of their work is barely acceptable. Alrik inspected the stone block carefully, much of it cut nearly perfect outside a few rough bits, though it would have to do. Grunting he gave a firebeard a nod before turning to the hall itself, much of the equipment stored safely away as the smell of freshly cut stone filled the air, a small smile gracing his lips before it soured at the sight of some of the firebeards.

Growling he gave the Firebeard a nod "It's adequate enough I suppose, though I expect better in the future once your clan has acquainted itself with our techniques, but, you have my leave to use your Mason's guild as you see fit, just make sure to clear it with Thane Thrur, I'll not have shoddy expansion allowed within these halls". His voice carried over the hall as the younger Khazad left in fear, the duel earlier in the year having made them far too skittish.

Rolling his eyes he left the Firebeard hall happily in search of a celebratory drink, whilst making plans to shove many of the Khazad off on their clan. A good thing as the clan needed new halls and the sooner they were independent the better.

Hokul hid within an alcove as he watched for urk's the campsite below him with a Irate smile his hand itching to find a target for his crossbow, though no urk showed after a week, letting out a sigh as he Signalled towards the veterans to leave their positions whilst he kept watchful for the few beardlings to leave safely as they sloppily pulled further back into safety of the darkness.

Shaking his head he focused on the task at hand the urk's camp remaining early empty, he swore that Gotri would be buying him a round of drinks for this outing though as he left for the surface he was sure that he would be back, if for nothing more than a good grobkul.

Kaz stood beside Malgon as they surveyed the ranger's more than half of them missing as they were on more distant missions, not that it solved the issue before them the ranger beardlings looking ragged their cloaks in disrepair and weapons held hap hazard.

Malgon spat to the side as he glanced towards a hollowed-out tunnel that housed the elders "If this keeps up we'll never manage to get this lot up to scratch if they die, bad enough that they've come to berate us after leaving for a decade, though I give it another half a decade before we get this lot at least good enough for scouting out those tunnels."

Kaz shook his head whilst taking a seat atop a rock that was in the stages of being turned into a bench. "They would survive already, the urk in those tunnels are no more menacing than the thaggoraki in a straight fight, they just lack the skill at being unseen but that will only come with experience and enduring the challenges ahead. We just need them to survive and all will settle itself". Kaz's voice rang with certainty as the fresh recruits moved off into the barracks.

Malgon gave a nod not voicing his opinion as the two of them moved towards the Camps planning room. Kaz reached for a Keg of ale as they walked inside the sound of birds chirping in the wind.

Not that his current models were working but he'd get them there, that was if the elders did not come down on him for being a little too creative, though he knew what he was doing and he'd prove it, he just needed to get these working properly.

Broadbeam: (Appeasement: Grumbling (2/3)) (-3 Culture clash and multiple minor offshoots) (Currently made up of 5 groups, gonna be 7 with the new arrivals)

Firebeard: (Appeasement: Rebellious 7/10) (-10 Their pissed over a few things)(Make sure this does not hit zero or they leave, or start a minor civil war since they might just piss your clan off enough) (Only 2 groups will be 4 with new arrivals.) (Next turn you receive half of what they would usually pay you.)

Levels of Appeasement

  • Content (+50% Yield from this guild and its warriors are keen to prove their skill in appreciation of your continued support. (+5 to Combat rolls and less likely to be killed in combat to having slightly better equipment than the rest of the Throng)
  • Happy (+25% Yield from this guild and its warriors train harder than they usually would. (Warriors associated with the guild are more likely to be injured than killed)
  • Grumbling (This is pretty much standard for dawi so there is no benefit when a guild lingers here)
  • Annoyed (-25% Yield from this guild and warriors belonging to this guild will cause unity issues within the hold)
  • Rebellious (-50% yield from a guild at this point and warriors belonging to this guild will not join an offensive campaign beyond what is required of their oaths)

This was a long one, still had a lot of fun writing it and a fair bit of help from Imp in getting them done but I think were both happy with how this turned out, still enjoy and have a good day.

YAY! Update!
I hope with the new hall Deep dawi runemasters will start to produce more runes. Even if they just make a lot of light runes it will ne already be a great boon in my opinion
Why not add light runes to Nautilus? At least for inner lightning? It will allow to spend less air

Hmm a new Mushroom Hall would provide us with 500 Dawi/2000 Khazad additional Food Cap, our current Mushroom Hall is 500 Dawi/Khazad additional Food Cap, while the Brodabeam Growing Hall is 1000 Dawi/Khazad additional food cap(but will grow on it's own). Strange that the new Mushroom Hall has a different food cap for Dawi and Khazad while the old options have not. The same is true for old and new surface farms. Is that a mistake or a rule change?

The same is true for old and new surface farms. Is that a mistake or a rule change?

I think it's a bit of both, I had them split with Dawi eating more before scrapped that idea as Khazad eat a lot as well, I think dawi might actually eat the least not sure but your food Cap is equal for both so it was a rule change. Though the Ale cap stays the same pretty sure dawi drinks hit's harder and they drink more hence the difference. on that Cap.

Damn our Dawi clan loves having kids. 48 more born when their average roll should really only accommodate 26.

If that rate keeps up, then despite all the immigrants from the Khazad, the Dawi clan will still maintain its relative ratio of numbers in the hold.

Walking into the valley you spotted that it was tiny the small stream reported now a small river under the Storm while the ground glistened with water as the water disappeared under the mountain.
Might want to use 'glistened with moisture' so you don't repeat water twice in quick succession? Generally you don't want to use the same words too close together I think, makes things flow better when it's fresh.
