Ring-Maker [Worm/Lord of the Rings Alt-Power] [Complete]

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
Coil's fucked. He stole a Ring that wasn't meant for him and now he's paying the consequences. Those timelines must've been hell for him to be this desperate.

As I said before, Taylor should have handed over Narya and Vilya to their bearers and made her own ring.

Fortunately, this is a problem that will be solved once she stops procrastinating and dominates Coil with the power of the master ring.

The Ring of Fire will burn Coil from the inside out.

Also, has he given up on being Thomas Calvert? If not, his time in possession of Narya will be rather short.

Okay. So it's a forgone conclusion that Taylor's gonna have to make the One Ring at some point. Something I'd like to ask you guys is this: How show it work? What kind of power set should it have? And most importantly, what should Taylor's mindset be as she is making it?
I think the One should have the power to:
1. Deactivate any or all Rings if needed.
2. Conversely give any or all Rings a power boost under certain conditions.
3. Establish a mental link between Ring-bearers for communication purposes.
Anyone have any other ideas?

Why Coil, you shouldn't have!

Well, I hope you and Krouse both appreciate the fruits of your labor, Taylor's labor, and the new aspects of your relationships.

Coil.....
There is nowhere you can run. Nowhere you can hide. The Eye Sees All. And you shall burn.

That is, if the Ring doesn't devour you before She finds you....

AHAHJAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

You have already failed Coil! AHAHAH! I don't know if anyone realizes the pure unrelenting fury of a Maiar in the heart of their purpose.

This is also going to be a great example for the PRT. DO NOT FUCK WITH RINGS.

This seems like a dumb decision even by Coil's standards. Even if he doesn't realize how dangerous the rings are, he just stole a power-granting artifact - and the one with the anti-master powers at that. The PRT is going to want that back rather badly. Also, he left behind the pre-cog ring - and you can bet Annatar is going to do whatever it takes to find him.

Its a staple of Coil that once he gets too big for his britches, usually after Leviathan, he does a dumb. And, as far as I can tell he is missing some truly crucial bits of information and context and the stuff he does know he filed under "Ehh its just a dumb girl being protective".

There is also the fact that he may not know the full powers of all of her "Modules". Doesn't know she has actual honest to god pre-cog of the true variety and he's kinda boned.

And then as to the PRT, he generally thinks of them as a laughing stock when he's in the depths of his dumb.

Overall, yeah this was really dumb.

SmeaCoil did a silly. Wonder if they'll mistake him for a Nilbog creation when they finally get him.

Also wonder how Armsy's gonna react upon learning that Taylor had a very good reason for withholding the Ring.

And judging by the power trip Narnya (I think that's the right one?) gave him, he's going to get even dumber.
Narya, and... yeah considering how quick he started expressing Gollum-like symptoms the ring is shredding his soul in a literal sense. His fea is basically buckling under the pressure.

I am really curious to see if we are going to see Annatar using Black Speech with how utterly furious she is going to be.

And this is actually worse for him than for the Nazghul. They received the rings of Men, the rings that corrupted them were actually meant for them. You could argue in that case that they would have been hit even worse, but it is apparent that Sauron was craftier by that point so the effects would logically have been less obvious until he wished to show it, i.e once he got the Master Ring. Coil has done something worse than that to himself by taking one of what would have been the Elf Rings and more to the point in this case a ring which was never meant for him or anyone like him.

If nothing else, Coil will serve as a cautionary tale, to those with high enough clearance to -access- his file, and possibly his prison, if he survives the ordeal.

"Trifle not with Taylor's Rings, for they are powerful in a way that dwarfs description, and only their Chosen Bearers can handle them without fear. Even Taylor herself is not immune to their lure."

I wonder if Coil had nicked/borrowed the ring in a seperate timeline and that's why it affects him so quickly, I mean it is possible that this is the first time he got a hold of it due to his dialogue but that could also be a way of hiding himself/his power from Trickster

Oh hey, another christams present! Stop it, you will spoil me! Wait, no, you are probably already to late... nevermind then, keep it coming!

And what a chapter it is. It's been a while since I was reading Worm much, and fanfics don't feature Travelers that often, I have honestly forgotten Tricksters power is even a thing. As such I must admit to be caught completly flatfooted by this development. Well done.

Also the first scene of this update is probably THE best Travelers interlude I have read, including the canon. Your ability to highlight characters and situations via casual interactions is honestly mindblowing. I mean you managed to establish Kruise as forcibly removed from his old life, frustrated by hid impotence, and inadvertedly alienating his team, all in one conversation, which wasn't even about any of those problems. It's really a rare talent.

If I were to nitpick I think you overplayed the ring effect on Trickster and Coil. I mean the way you presented it, the scene just screemed: "Congratulations, you have just made the biggest mistake in your life, sucker!". I mean the fact that this is a mistake on Coils part will be obvious to anyone who read this fic, but the way you handled it, foreshadows Coils fall way more than the mess he is going to make of things before it happens, which may not be the best way to really drive the tension here. But it's just my attempt to try for constructive criticism.

A couple of relevant quotes from 'Of the Rings of Power...' in the Silmarillion:

While Sauron 'wore the One Ring he could perceive all the things that were done by means of the lesser rings, and he could see and govern the very thoughts of those that wore them.'

The bearers of the Nine 'could see things in worlds invisible to mortal men, but too often they beheld only the phantoms and delusions of Sauron. And one by one, sooner or later, according to their native strength and the good or evil of their will in the beginning, they fell under the the thraldom of the ring that they bore and under the dominion of the One '

So if Taylor forges the One she'll be able to see what Coil's thinking whenever he wears his stolen ring, possibly all the time, and she'll know everything he's done with it. Coil will be able to see the invisible, but Taylor will be able to show him phantoms and delusions.

Most likely yeah, though this is a bit different context since Coil has one of the Three and the bearers of the Nine quote was about the Nine Rings.

On the other hand, Sauron helped create the rings of men, while the rings of elves resisted the master ring as Celebrimbor created them in secret without any assistance from Sauron. Though as I recall, even then it was only a matter of time before they would have fallen under his dominion.

Having created the rings all on her own, Taylor may have even greater influence on their bearers than Sauron did.

Quite plausibly, and her long time being their surrogate Bearer may also have an effect since such things are narratively significant and that has import and power of its own in the LoTR universe.

I'm actually impressed that Krouse managed to resist the temptation to keep the ring or put it on. That's some respectable willpower right there.

And Coil...oh dear. He's just kicked the hornet's nest. And screwed over one of his most vital assets--his intelligence and temperance. Sooner or later, his subordinates are going to notice him coming apart at the seams.
