[X] Talk to Rei about General Well-being
You catch Rei in the middle of a DDR session with Pen
2. You patiently wait until she's done (which takes slightly longer than you anticipate), and then you ask her how she's doing. Rei is doing fine. Yes, yes, you know. But what else?
Rei is feeling…bothered by Shinji. It takes a few back-and-forth questions to understand that by "bothered", Rei means "concerned about". She goes on at length about all of the ways his behavior has been different since the previous Angel attack. These range from things as broad as his general demeanor to highly specific things such as his gait, how much longer it takes for him to prepare dinner, the frequency of him greeting classmates and the amount of time he spends in the bath. It kind of weirds you out, but this is Rei. Few things are really normal about her. It's difficult to get her to talk about anything else other than Shinji's well-being.
Rei is keeping an eye on him, but she does not really know how to "fix" Shinji. The feeling is…unpleasant. And it's distracting her from concentrating on more important tasks. She declines to enumerate what those tasks are. That's classified.
Rei feels like she is not doing enough for Shinji or the Commander right now. But she will keep trying.
[X] Talk to Shinji about School
You find Shinji in the kitchen with some tea late one night. He looks tired. You tell him so, and he admits that he hasn't been sleeping very well with a sheepish expression. You tell him he should get some rest, but he says he's going to finish his tea first. You tell him Rei's worried about him. Shinji makes a face and sighs. He's been feeling kind of guilty about that. He hates bothering her like that.
You tell him it's okay to have other people worry about you. You tell him that you've been concerned too. Shinji apologizes almost reflexively. You tell him not to worry about it. Shinji says sorry. You refrain from running your hand over your face.
You ask him how school's been going. He tells you it's…honestly not been going great. He's having a hard time focusing on the material lately, and well, you've seen his test scores. They're mediocre. Shinji has been scraping by so far, but as the material gets more challenging, he worries he's going to fall behind and not be able to catch up. The small comfort he has is that his housemates also have pretty bad grades; Asuka's smart but she can't read the test questions and Rei just doesn't seem to care that much about her schoolwork. He wishes he could be like her, but honestly, getting bad grades does bother him quite a bit.
Other than that, school's been going fine. It's a little weird now that everyone is focused so much on Rei and Asuka's quasi-celebrity status, but he doesn't mind. He's worried about what will happen once PR rolls out his marketing campaign. He's not sure why they're taking so long, but he suspects it's because his performance has been lacking. So, um, sorry for that.
He briefly mentions things being pretty much fine with Aida and Suzuhara and Horaki before finishing his tea and going to bed.
[X] Talk to Asuka about The Future
Asuka is going to be an Evangelion pilot, duh.
Well, yes, but what about
after the Angels are all defeated? Asuka replies she's going to be an Evangelion pilot, duh. You don't
really think they're going to just get rid of the Evas after the threat is gone, right? The nerds from NERV-Berlin seemed fully expectant that they're going to be incorporated into the UN's military forces eventually, so Asuka figures she'll just be on standby for Unit-02 once it gets folded into the UN's armed forces. After that, she'll retire and live a life of fame and luxury, and also, she'll marry Kaji. So there.
She says this with utter confidence, not really seeming to understand the implications for the world at large if the Evangelions are mobilized as weapons of war. Either that, or she does not care. She's happy as long as she gets to stay with Unit-02. She might actually be kind of thrilled she's essentially a living deterrent weapon. Either way, she seems very set on her future plans right now, childish as they seem.
[X] Rei: Combat training
To prove a point to yourself, you throw Rei into a simulation fight with Ananiel by herself and see how she does. To your utter lack of surprise, Rei does just fine. She makes a few tactical mistakes here and there based on which ships she decides to hop to and gets sunk once or twice, but in most runs she's able to reach the Angel's oral disc and successfully attack it. Overall, the results aren't as good as Asuka's, but they're not concerning or to the point where you think having Rei onboard Unit-02 greatly detracted from Asuka's performance. You are a little concerned about her odd psychological symptoms that come up in real fights, though. While none of the simulation fights have caused any odd behavior from Rei, you've noticed in a number of the previous fights Rei faced a setback with an unknown cause.
During this fight, Rei became extremely nauseous. You don't believe it's motion sickness, as she's never demonstrated it since, but still, very concerning. Ritsuko is, of course, really unhelpful, and remains tight-lipped about Rei's psychological state. You're becoming increasingly convinced that Rei and Ritsuko are hiding something from you.
[X] Rei: Arts program
Rei draws pictures of Shinji. A lot of pictures of Shinji.
You ask her somewhat teasingly what that's all about. Rei shrugs. She's drawing what's on her mind right now. You see.
When she's not drawing Shinji, she's drawing Rei plush or the previous Angel. Unlike previous Angel sketches, which Rei usually did in charcoal, this Angel is not scribbled out or horribly mutilated. Rei uses some pastels to add splashes of color to represent its glowing spheres, and thin black pencil lines emerge from its legs like spiderwebs. It's almost beautiful. You know, were it not a picture of an Angel. You don't particularly like this one. It's skilled and, out of context, aesthetically pleasing, but you think Angels are too ugly to be represented like this.
Rei, seemingly seeking your approval, seems a little disappointed and goes back to drawing Shinji.
[X] Shinji: Synchronization training
Shinji seems anxious as he enters the plug. Ritsuko gives you a look as if this is somehow your fault, and then starts the test. His sync rate is not as stable as previous sessions or in combat, and ebbs and flows in waves. Ritsuko occasionally intervenes to tell him to focus on the test when she can tell his mind is wandering. You're not entirely sure how she can tell, but something in the numbers and graphs flashing on her computer screen must be off.
You try to get her to talk about psychographs a little bit more. Ritsuko says it's a bit too technical to get into all the details, but they essentially measure mental energy being spent on goal-directed activities, in this case, piloting the Evangelion. You ask if it's measuring how motivated the pilot is. Ritsuko shakes her head. Not exactly. It's measuring the pilot's will to live. If they lose the will to live, they won't keep fighting.
Shinji's sync score is down five points, sitting at 63.1%. Ritsuko isn't terribly surprised, but she's disappointed anyway. You better straighten him out before he loses more ground. It
is your responsibility to manage him.
Shinji seems depressed about his results.
[X] Shinji: Study
Shinji hits the books to try to catch up on his schoolwork. You do your best to help him out when he has a question. You weren't the best student growing up either, but you can handle most of his questions without any real issues. NERV didn't hire no dummy. Shinji isn't feeling very confident, but he thinks he gets some of the material he was struggling with. Maybe he can do this after all.
[X] Asuka: Physical training
You put Asuka through some climbing and crawling exercises, as you feel like she could have reached the Angel's core somewhat more efficiently. Asuka bitches and moans that she already knows how to crawl; it's the first thing they teach you how to do, but she eventually shuts up and does the exercises. She pushes herself hard to prove that she can do it no sweat. Her results are impressive, so you move on to increasingly more difficult exercises until her arms and legs are screaming for her to stop. She calls you a sadist and pouts a little bit, but you're pleased with the results. You feel like Asuka, deep down, appreciated the challenge. Way deep down, based on the dirty look she's giving you now.
[X] Asuka: Go out/Free time
You let Asuka have some free time. You're kind of curious about what she does with herself when you're not watching her. It seems that she reads back issues of German magazines (mostly aimed at high school girls, though she also has a few motorcycle magazines that look well-loved), listens to her music (again, mostly German NDH bands and American industrial rock and grunge) or watches TV (her main choice being really crappy romance dramas. You have no idea what she gets out of them, as she looks bored or disgusted by most of them). She also plays games on the most beaten-up GameBoy SP you've ever seen. Her routine is best summed up as "consciously slacking off", but she seems overall content with her hobbies right now. You wish she'd interact with the other pilots a little more, but most of her hobbies are solo activities.
She spends an equal amount of time in both halves of your apartment doing these things, though she generally avoids speaking to Rei, obviously. She also only ever watches TV on your side of the apartment. But it seems she's at least learned to tolerate being around them, and being around the Rei plush army (though she still privately complains about them to you).
Random Event
You come home late one evening to find Rei standing in the middle of the new apartment holding an envelope in her hands. This is unusual for her. Unlike you and the other pilots, who have more or less adjusted to the apartment's two halves and go freely between them, Rei usually avoids this half of the apartment and prefers to stay in the old one. Asuka is sprawled on the couch, occasionally looking over the top of her fashion magazine to warily eye Rei. Rei ignores her.
Rei hands you the envelope wordlessly. You notice that it's already been opened, and that it was sealed with a heart-shaped sticker. You blurt out that this is a love letter without thinking, and Asuka suddenly closes the gap between you at speeds thought impossible by mortal men.
The letter is pretty bland; the author says they've had Rei on their mind a lot lately, compliments her complexion and hair, and would like to meet her on the roof after school tomorrow, because they have something very important to tell her. The author did not leave a name. Eh, you'd rate it a 6/10 love letter.
Rei seems a little lost about what to do. She seems to have some kind of grasp that this letter is of sentimental importance but is unsure how to respond. It appears that she has come to you for advice. You really wish she had gone to Horaki for advice. But here she is.
Asuka tells Rei that she shouldn't bother meeting this person in a slightly condescending but not mean-spirited tone. Asuka gets like five of these a week. Asuka says she'd
never date someone who did something so wimpy and lame as send an anonymous love letter. She doesn't get this country. If someone likes her, they should just say it to her face! None of this wishy-washy stuff.
Rei isn't sure. She feels like she should respond to them, but…she doesn't know what to do. What do you think, Major?
[ ] Tell Rei to stand the author up. You don't think she should get involved in this stuff, and you sort of agree with Asuka. You also prefer men who take charge.
[ ] Tell Rei to meet up with this person and hear them out by herself. There will probably be more of these in the future, and it's probably best she learn how to deal with this sooner, rather than later.
You're also morbidly curious to see what would happen.
[ ] Tell Rei to meet up with this person and recruit Asuka to be a chaperone in case Rei needs backup if things get out of hand. You know they don't get along, but Asuka obviously has more experience with this kind of thing, and she's a fellow girl.
[ ] Tell Rei to meet up with this person and recruit Shinji to be a chaperone in case Rei needs backup if things get out of hand. Rei is more comfortable around Shinji than Asuka and would appreciate his presence. He is, however, inexperienced and may give this person the wrong impression.
[ ] General advice for Rei (write-in, keep it concise)
