But would like to keep the MM-144 in the loadout for its first weapons test, and to insure that we have something that can keep firing, when the MK-20 need to reload, so with that in mind.
Giving Asuka the crossbow means she's trying to hit a target "several times taller than the tallest building in Tokyo-3" with a weapon that fires in a ballistic trajectory, while Rei and Asuka get Positron Rifles that fire in a nice straight line.

Also, the height seems liable to take some of the punch out of a crossbow bolt, even an EVA-sized one.

So I personally still think 3 Positron Rifles for a coordinated maximum-punch alpha strike is best.

Rei raises her eyebrows. She does not feel the Second Child was sincerely trying to befriend her…did she miss something? It may be the case. Rei admits she's still not very good with others.
Well, neither is Asuka. Maybe that's why you got bad vibes.

Before you can formulate a response to Rei, you go to the fridge to grab a b

BLOOD TYPE BLUE CONFIRMED. ANGEL DETECTED APPROACHING TOKYO-3.
Ah, good, the other shoe finally dropped.

Hmm... Maybe equip Asuka with a Sonic Glaive to attack the legs, since she's likely to rush in anyway, and have Rei and Shinji shoot at the Core with a Positron rifle and a crossbow, to see how the cloud reacts to matter and to energy.
It's that or play Shadow of the Colossus with giant robots.

I'm not sure a melee weapon will help at all if it's extremely large, and the core all the way at the top. It seems very difficult to hit, and what, are we gonna have Asuka climb jt while the others shoot?
Because as we've determined, attacking the Angel's limbs closest to the things the Angel wants to break is a waste of time.

Snark aside, I have a few reasons to think Asuka stabbing the Angel's ankles would be a good idea.
  1. Restricting the Angel's movement is a good idea to try.
  2. Keeping the Angel focused on someone ready for melee combat (and off our ranged attackers) is a good idea to try.
  3. It's good to keep our options open.
  4. I have no faith that Asuka would stick to the shoot-and-scoot tactics the whole team would need to use if they all had ranged weapons.

I have been convinced to put all our eggs in the Positron Rifle basket, though.

The angel has some kind of weird energy field around its body. I'm worried there might be something other than an A.T. Field to block our shots.

Positron salvo does sound like a strong opening though, and we could get help from the jssdf to pour on more fire.

If it turns out we need to switch to melee in the operation how long will it take to deploy a knife or glaive to the field?

Is there a in-rp reason we can't give the pilots side-weapons alongside the rifles, or is it just mechanics? Because if it's the former, hopefully this is something we can work on after this angel attack?

since it does need a test and Asuka's less familiar with the Mk.20s.

As I understand it, Evangelions don't have any kind of on-board means of carrying a second "large" weapon.

So you get one "large" weapon, hand-carried, plus the prog knife in your shoulder pylon.

Funnily enough, Unit-01 in the show had a prog knife kept in a shoulder compartment. Unit-02 swapped out said knife for a set of shoulder mounted explosive rocket spikes. Not sure if that's the case here.

I don't really feel too great about everyone having the same weapon tbh. Seems like it would run a decent chance of being ineffective and thus waste turns dedicated to getting a different one.

Theoretically, we could probably get shoulder-slings to let the mechs carry rifles with them at all times, but they might get in the way when wrestling Angels and would definitely take at least a few dozen square meters of leather each.

Kokabiel II: Der Engel der Sterne (continued)
GET EQUIPPED WITH:
[X] Rei: Positron Rifle Mk. 20
[X] Shinji: Positron Rifle Mk. 20
[X] Asuka: Positron Rifle Mk. 20

You put in the order and get the pilots into your car. Shinji is in the passenger seat while the two girls are in the back, pointedly not looking at each other. You really hope that your interview isn't going to be the primary cause of the end of humanity. The Angel is large enough for you to see it. It's approaching Tokyo-3 from the east. It's not far from where you enjoyed your hot spring holiday.

You enter the service tunnel, and the Angel disappears from sight.

You make it onto the bridge where the other technicians are waiting for you and a few other stragglers. Aoba slouches in after you, looking annoyed. He grumbles something about the Angel ruining a date he had before taking his seat at the console. The pilots are standing by in the cages, and the Evangelions are equipped with the specified weapons. Unit-00 and Unit-01 are at full capacity, with Unit-02 still having some relatively minor cosmetic damage to its face from the previous fight. Asuka whines about it.

Shinji says he's ready. He sounds a little more confident this time than the last, though he's obviously afraid. This is his second sortie, after all. Rei says she is ready. Asuka says to hurry up and launch Unit-02 already.

You study the map of Tokyo-3, pick three exit points that are roughly equidistant from each other, and put them up topside. All three are equipped with Positron Rifles. You are currently operating all extant Positron Rifles. You used to have four, but one of them kind of got destroyed beyond repair when Arakiel exploded. If a weapon is lost or runs out of ammunition, that's it for this battle. The pilot will have to use something else. Rei's Positron Rifle has 6 shots remaining. Shinji's Positron Rifle has 6 shots remaining. Asuka's Positron Rifle has 6 shots remaining.

Note: it will take the Evangelion pilots an entire combat round to switch weapons, unless that weapon is the Progressive Knife.

Note: you may instruct the pilots to charge the Positron Rifle. This will not consume more ammunition, but it will take longer to fire the weapon.

You will be giving strategic direction to each pilot. While Rei and Asuka have more than enough combat experience to follow strategic directives, Shinji might need a little more specificity in the tactics department for more complicated maneuvers. As a rule, please make sure any write-ins are appropriately general. Feel free to include encouragement or other special direction to the pilots, but please, no speeches.

Also, very important for success: please give your plan a cool name.

It is a mechanic to save me some headache trying to balance the game. Moreover, many weapons available in this quest are two-handed weapons anyway (all currently available weapons except the Knife require two hands to operate effectively), and I'm gonna veto giving the Evangelions Batman utility belts as a special activity for the time being.

Okay, I way thinking we could check how the cloud of blue lights affected different ammo types, and see what it did to matter before it got too close to an Eva, but that's not what won, so I guess we should aim at different parts of the body?

Asuka at a leg. (Only you could hit a quick moving target, right?)
Shinji at the body.
Rei at the core.

Last time, only charged shots could penetrate the AT field, so something like:
Move into cover, charge, shoot?

We need to keep the Evas at a distance, because that energy cloud is going to do something terrible once activated. Maybe we should only have one pilot take a shot this turn, with the others using their action to get into position and charge? With three pilots we could stagger the fire to keep the Angel under pressure.

[X] Operation Fallen Shadow
-[X] Instructions for Asuka
Will be taking a frontal position, insuring adequate distance is kept, charge the MK-20, will fire first, aiming either for the leg or the body, (call out her shots) afterwards raising her AT-field for any return fire, and to cover the JSSDF detachment, dependent, be prepared to reposition, tell her to get ready to add another Angel kill to her record.

-[X] Instructions for Shinji
Move into position on the right flank/side of the Angel, insuring adequate distance is kept, charge the MK-20, will fire after Asuka, aiming either for the leg or the body, dependent on what Asuka fires at, raising his AT-field for any return fire, and to cover the JSSDF detachment, dependent, be prepared to reposition, tell him that his own resolution to succeed, is more important than any one thing, he can do this.

-[X] Instructions for Rei:
Move into position on the left flank/side of the Angel, insuring adequate distance is kept, charge the MK-20, will fire after Shinji, aiming either for the body or the core, dependent on what the Shinji fire at, raising her AT-field for any return fire, and to cover the JSSDF detachment, dependent, be prepared to reposition, tell her we will finish our conversation after this Angel has been destroyed.

[X] Instructions for the JSSDF
Small fast moving detachments deployed behind the EVAs to add their firepower when they fire the MK-20s, be prepared to reposition, long range units deployed farther away will fire a salvo alongside the EVAs staggered shots, all other JSSDF forces are to stand by awaiting any openings in the Angels AT-field.

I don't know, not sure on anything to say to Rei that could be encouraging, since we are going for an Alpha strike/more dakka maneuver I think this is good, any thoughts?

Why split the fire? I'd just all shoot at the core, if it's visible; remember we're going for maximum concentration of firepower. I like the dialogue, but I am going to write my own plan:

[X] Operation Inevitable Failure
-[X] Instructions for Rei:
Charge, shoot at the core. Co-ordinate with Shinji to fire at the same time, or as close as possible. Keep AT Field up, cover yourself, be prepared to reposition. Tell her to come back alive and well, and we'll talk later.

-[X] Instructions for Shinji:
As Rei; Charge, fire at the core, co-ordinate. AT Field to close defence, be prepared to reposition. Give him a timer if he needs it. Tell him he'll do fine, and the others have his back just as he has theirs.

-[X] Instructions for Asuka:
Charge, fire before - but as close as possible to - Shinji and Rei, to batter down the Angel's defences. Aim at the core. Spread AT Field to cover friendlies behind her. Tell her she's got this chance to prove herself more than a shit-talking, arrogant, useless blowhard. Tell her to do her thing, and get a second tally mark - and make sure she knows she's got friendly tanks behind her and under her protection.
--[X] Actually make a note to put up a kill-board for the pilots somewhere. And/or have the techs paint little kill silhouettes on the Evas.

-[X] Instructions for the JSSDF:
Tanks and similar slow-moving direct-fire vehicles behind Asuka (covered by her AT Field), to fire after she fires. If they are not aready deployed on the field, hold them in reserve. Fast-moving VTOL and other similar forces to spread out, waiting for the same cue; impress on them the imperative to not bunch up. All forces should be ready to reposition at the first sign of an enemy attack. Artillery, stationed at the edge of their range, to attempt time-on-target barrage for the same moment. Don't try to precision target, just hit the Angel in general.

Code-named "inevitable failure" because overwhelming displays of firepower do not work against giant monsters :V And, because then Misato can dramatically gasp when "operation inevitable failure" fails. General thinking is Asuka batters down the Angel's AT Field, and since she's the best-trained she should have the ability to fire a split-second before Shinji and Rei; they then concentrate fire on the core, and hopefully it dies before it can react. If it doesn't, then the JSSDF fire covers them while we re-plan and think.

The main point of failure here is if the Angel reacts before the volley can be fired, either by anticipation ("I wonder what those big Angel-like things with big guns are going to do...") or AT Field Bullshit. The first can be alleviated somewhat by firing before the shots are charged, the second is just Angels being Angels. Feedback/alterations are appreciated.

A couple of reasons, first is the problem of having to charge the MK-20s, ideally I would like at least one pilot to be firing at all times, while the other two charge their weapons, until we have a continuous salvo on the Angel, as circumstances warrant it of course.

Second, this is the opening move and are attempting to get the EVAs/ JSSDF into position without drawing fire, not exactly sure on the time constraints involved with my flanking attempt, hence is why I had Asuka fire first in my plan, since she is in position first to give cover to Shinji and Rei,(if the Angel goes on the offensive first) until they can get into position, and take it under a crossfire.

Third, is given the size of the tripod, (and If I have it pictured in my head right) that it is several times taller than the tallest building in Tokyo-3, which based of show/film I am assuming means a skyscraper, but several times taller then that, when you factor in the size of the EVAs compared to the tripod, that alone is a long shot before even factoring in its legs that it could use to block shots and its AT-field which will most likely be strongly concentrated around the core, if that is even the real core and not a red herring.

Now I am guessing that something of this size will have a hard time extending its AT-field to sufficiently protect all of its legs and body, so the plan is to find where its AT-field is the weakest and cut it down to size, so to speak, you cut a tree down at its base after all.
