There's no good way to break this. In my view, only way that the reveal wouldn't result in the witchout of one or both siblings is if they rekindled their relationship (at least a bit) before the reveal happens.

Like seriously. Now that we know the curse is a thing, is that something Tamiko would really keep from her sister?
By all evidence presented to Tamiko at the moment, reaching out to others and Kimiko through phones doesn't work.

Sidenote here, but you're allowed to do collective science and determine what others will practice (well, with the obvious clauses on Kishi).

Vote updated since we seem to have more control on what everyone else can work on then I thought we did.

You take one final look around you to make sure no one is near, and that Evelyn is holding onto Fluffy and the dolphin while your practice. Keep them safe! Meanwhile, all of your friends have transformed already, and you note how Ariane and Mariko are already looking over each other's uniforms with some curiosity.

You give last happy wave at Evelyn and turn cough at your friends. "Alright, everyone! We're doing magical group practice today!" you announce. Everyone's eyes turn to you and for a moment you smile to yourself and bask in their attention, thinking you're some sort of sports coach talking to her players.

"Group practice?" Ariane asks curiously, causing you to falter a bit.

"Well, it's pretty much basic magic practice," you admit and awkwardly rub your neck with your right hand. "Although, maybe continuing to work on things suggested by uncle and miss Cathy wouldn't be a bad idea?"

Which reminds you… "Oh! And Mariko, I think you should talk to them when you get the chance! They might have some good ideas for you to try out."

"I-I'll… keep that in mind?"
she says with a slow nod, seemingly struggling to recall the visages of the people mentioned. "But uh… How does this work?"

"Well, we practice our skills as well as we can!"
you say brightly. "However, before any of that, maybe we should go over the magic Ariane and you can use? you have yet to fight together, so..."

Ariane grins wildly. "Showcase time!" She seems to need no additional encouragement as she suddenly starts floating right off the ground in front of Mariko, the grin expanding to nearly split her face. She makes a flourishing pirouette in the air, clearly enjoying the sensation of freedom her flight gives her.

"So… You can fly then?" Mariko asks, gazing at Ariane's floating form in mild surprise.

"Yes!" Ariane chirps back leaning forward to look Mariko in the eyes at even level. Her eyes seem to twinkle from joy of being able to freely use her magic. "But that's not all!"

'E-everyone, give her some room,'
Kishi suddenly sends to all of you, while animatedly motioning for all of you to follow her away from the floating girl. You comply immediately, with a more reluctant Mariko following behind. You walk away a few steps before Ariane deems it a sufficient safe zone.

Ariane closes her eyes and relaxes. Almost immediately, a score of floating orbs of light spring into existence around her, dancing gently in the air around her. The entire clearing is illuminated by the bright light that slowly starts melting the snow around her.

Mariko's eyes widen, but she doesn't have the time to do anything else really. Ariane quickly ups the ante by summoning a cascade of flambards that shoot to the orbit around her, gently floating in the air and circling around the girl. The rays of light cast by the orbs are reflected by the clean sheen of the weapons, further spreading the brilliant light across the shadowy meadow and the mounds of sparkling snow.

"Holy…" Mariko whispers in awe, rubbing her eyes in disbelief. "A-am I… Am I dreaming?"

"Hmm? Nah…"
you tell her with a sly smirk. "That's Ariane's schtick!"

"...I don't quite follow?"

"Ariane can create a spectral form of herself when she goes to sleep,"
you calmly explain. "I suppose it counts as magical sleep-walking? Considering that she listens to no one when like that and does whatever she wants. It's rather expensive in grief, though."

"I also see a lot of good dreams!"
Ariane yells at you from the distance, obviously having at least partially overheard your conversation. "...Well, except when I don't." Yeah, the entire nightmare form you had to fight when you met… You shiver at the horrible memory and bury it back to the forgotten corners of your mind. "Oh well, fire in the hole!"

The entire clearing flashes as Ariane releases her orbs of light, all at once Snow is vaporized and ground scorched as the beams rain upon the cold earth. At the same time, the flambards seem to gradually fold onto each other before vanishing altogether. Through the commotion, Ariane gently floats towards your group and falls to stand before you with a smooth curtsy.

"And this is what I can do!" Ariane says, sounding happy about the chance to show off like this. "Now, what is your magic?"

Mariko on her part is completely taken aback and seems almost nervous about the request. However, Ariane's almost pleading wide eyes seem to overwhelm her, and she gives in. "Um, I can make barriers?" she offers, pointing her hand to her side where a bright purple, human-sized rectangle forms out of nowhere.

Seeing the expectant look on Ariane's face, Mariko winces. "That's… about it really? It all boils down to making more of these. Nothing really fancy."

Now that's just wrong! "Are you sure? I mean, there's so much more details I- we'd all like to know!" you say and move to inspect the formed field more closely. "How much control do you have over your barriers? Can you move them remotely once they're formed? That sort of thing."

Mariko stays quiet for a moment, though this time more out of contemplation. "Ugh, bear in mind that I'm not yet sure on all the specifics and this is really nitpicking… But I suppose you can classify finished barriers into two categories: anchored fields and free objects."

"Hmm, what do you mean?"

"...W-well, my anchored fields act by basically sticking the base field, the part where the growth begins, to a designated solid surface,"
Mariko explains, growing visibly uneasy under your attention. "It can even be loose material like snow, or just the tip of a needle. As long as it's solid, I can anchor my pieces there."

You turn to look at the rectangle. True enough, it seems to grow from the snow itself. Strangely though, the unbound edges seem to be burning away with barely noticeable white light, while the purple energy flows to fix these deficiencies. Feeling curious, you give the field an experimental knock, and nothing happens. A gentle push follows, and the barrier shatters into pieces that vanish into the air.

"Of course, firmer ground makes them more powerful. B-but they can't be moved without breaking them. And as long as the unbound edges burn themselves, I can change their size and properties, but need to constantly feed them magic to prevent them from vanishing. I can summon new geometrical pieces anywhere on those surfaces, though, and stick the edges to other firm surfaces as much as I want. U-unless the edges stick to something - even other barrier surfaces are fine - they will keep burning away to nothingness."

So they're Lego force fields with changing blocks? That works, you suppose. "You can't make them fly then?" you ask and shake your head. "What about compressing them?"

"N-no… Anchored fields are earthbound,"
Mariko admits with a wince, sounding almost ashamed. "I can adjust the structural integrity with magic and time, though. I-it costs more magic, but can help when I want to have better protection."

As if to demonstrate everything she's said, Mariko summons a human-sized square field, and then creates three similar ones next to it to form a cube without a roof. Their edges are glued to each other at the seams. Only the upper edges burn, while the existing parts seem to grow thin layers on themselves. They're becoming harder then?

Mariko waves her hand all of sudden, and a roof square grows on top of the cube, turning off the burns and forming a perfectly stable force field cube that just sits there.

"That's amazing…" Ariane whispers while experimentally prodding the formed structure.

"I-if you say so?" Mariko notes with some uncertainty. "But now, about free objects…"

Your eyes widen in surprise as a bottom square forms to the cube. The most alarming thing, however, is the sudden sinking into the snow. What was that?

"Well, they're just collection of surfaces without an anchor point, using each other for support. T-they have no openings, and they gain a mass of their own in the process," Mariko sums it up.

"That seems very complicated, though…" Ariane notes quietly, watching the energy structure before her with a keen interest.

"Yeah, it can get difficult when you go for bigger things. A-and when fighting witches, y-you may not get to concentrate," Mariko stammers out and hastily reaches for the book hanging on her lap. "That is why I have this."

'I-it's a book?'
Kishi asks weakly.

"...It's a book that can store the 'building instructions' for any structures I make and choose to 'save'. I-I can even later return to the pages to adjust the constructs to be more efficient and faster in forming," Mariko explains. "It's a shortcut for getting things out too!"

"How does that work, though? Don't you need to read a book to use it?"
you ask.

"W-well… Think of it as a memory stick?" A hasty shake of head. "S-see, you have pre-prepared programs you can run at any moment you want. You can also access them immediately, as if they were embedded in your mind, yet you know it's not information in your mind."

"Neat…"
you whistle in awe. "Maybe try making something to hinder the mobility of witches and their familiars?

"T-thanks? I'll try... And as for the explanation, that about sums it up, though,"
Mariko says, sounding almost relieved she's done with long-winded explanation about her powers.

"Still, Ariane, you should also note that Mariko can function like a living voodoo doll! If a witch punches her, the witch is also punched, for example! It's a passive thing, though, but you should probably be warned."

"Ooh, another type of magic?"

Mariko winces. "Y-yeah… That too… Right..." The girls shakes her head again. "But what now?"

'W-we start, I suppose?'
Kishi sends her message to all of you, while you nod in agreement.

"Yeah! We might each need some room, though. I have blown myself up before, so safety measures are needed!" you announce with overt happiness about the subject of self-immolation. "Everyone knows what they're going to practice, right?"

A series of nods.

"Alright, let's go! If anyone needs help just use telepathy, or wave."

With that, you turn around and start walking away from your friends to get some room for your own experiences. Your mind is already swarming with things you'd like to do, some things crazier and more insane than others. However, the more you think about it, the more you keep coming back to a certain conclusion…

You need to get your basic utilities in order. You have enough cool stuff for now. Always make sure the base is alright!

The first problem is your sword… Well, it's a nice sword certainly! But ultimately it's also a rather dull one without your magic. Furthermore, your transformation only comes with a single one, which you cannot afford to lose.

So of course, you'll need to find a way to make more swords!

You have seen Kishi summon her rifle from nowhere before, so you try doing that first. It should be instinctual like all other personal magic, it should be rather easy.

But nothing comes to you. No sword, no understanding of how to create swords.

You frown and turn to look at your shield. All of your personal magic seems to be tied to it, and the energy it can produce. It makes for a versatile power, certainly, but also one easily crippled if you were to somehow lose your shield too.

You try creating another shield with our mind as a spontaneous experiment. But once more, nothing comes of it.

Is there something wrong with you since this won't work? Or do you need to use your shield for this too?

You sigh and look behind you. Mariko seems to be busy with something small and purple. Kishi and Ariane seem to have teamed up, and are near Evelyn to practice… Strangely enough Kishi seems to have extended both of her arms towards the floating Ariane, and they both are still.

You shake your head and return to the task at hand. They are your friends, they know what they're doing.

But since you're not going anywhere without it, you start gathering the white energy in your shield. Winds pick up around you and you comfort yourself with the familiar feeling of power. This magic enables you…

But you have a job to do. You turn to look at the shield and the sword embedded in it. Maybe you can make sabres with the white energy? It certainly remade your flesh once.

You focus on the energy, trying to find pathways for it. Those are scattered all across your body, and you could guide the surge anywhere you choose for the magic to take some sort of effect.

But with your mind focusing on the matter of swords, your attention turns to the pathways in the shield itself.

You grasp the possibility, and get rewarded by the sight of your sword… and how it multiplies itself like in those cell videos you've seen during biology lessons. You raise your eyebrows as you see the result: the two swords on the shield, embedded to the opposite sides.

This is pretty neat! In your excitement, you push more energy into the pathways, and the swords start creating themselves to the rims of the metal shield, now covered in handles, twelve in total.

However, it seems like you cannot create anymore swords after that. Instead, there is a strange feeling… As if you could push more energy, a huge amount, into the shield at once, and something would happen. But your estimate of the amount needed would exceed your shield's capacity and the feeling makes your uneasy, almost afraid.

Instead, you start pulling all the sabre out, one by one, each one gaining the familiar white hue of a drawn weapon while the nervous sensation inside you disappears. You take a close look at each of the swords too and frown. On a closer look, everyone of the twelve swords has some subtle differences in length, shape of the blade and the pommel. They're barely there, but they exist.

Weird.

You are left with twelve swords on your person, though, and no idea what to do with all of them. But this time you seem to have gained some kind of instincts. With a thought, all twelve of the blades disappear into white dust, and you can feel how you can once more create the blades.

This solves the problem of reliance on a single sword quite neatly.

But that leaves you more time to work on something else. And given the way your swords are pretty dull without magic and unable to do much damage, you could do something about that. And now that you think about it, you did figure out some basics for this sort of thing.

So you launch into some experiments, where you work on your sword enchantment abilities. To your surprise, by some proper and precise guidance of the energy, you can extend the blade's reach. Your enchantment also starts feeling more easier to perform now that you've familiarized yourself more with it.

Your last experiment is more of a brain fart than anything else, but you decide to see what happens when you pump a full shieldful of the white energy into the blade. To your surprise you're not blown away in an explosion, nor is the sabre merely coated in the white light.

No.

You watch with morbid fascination, as the sword begins to shift from the power of the energy, its structure changing and morphing. It's over soon, and you're left holding your original sword, but the dull sabre has grown sharper, and the blade and the handle are far more decorated than before.

You take an experimental swing. There's not that much of a difference to what you're used to, but you can feel the increased sharpness of the magical blade. You test it against a tree, and this time it carves through almost as easily as it had been coated with the weakest enchantment.

Neat, but expensive.

You de-transform and re-transform in quick succession to check something, and you're surprised to find that your sabre is still that way. The sword that comes with your transformation is still in its changed form.

You stay still for a moment before breaking into a grin. Success!

Tamiko:
- Learned Sword Creation and related abilities.
- Improved upon Sword Enchantment. More efficient and more options.

Kishi:
- Improved telekinesis slightly. Gunline boosted
--- Gun costs went from 20 to 15
--- Maximum guns went from 2 to 4
--- Hit penalty for extra guns dropped from 10 to 8

Ariane:
- Improved Flight no longer requires much concentration. Can also go higher. Partly gained due to home practice.
- First Orbit cost dropped from 50 to 40
-- Can spin the orbit fast enough to function as a huge chainsaw where you can't even see the swords!

Mariko:
- Doing her own thing.
What do you do?

That went a bit longer than I expected. Oh well, you learned a lot, and I recommend reading the mechanics post for details. Only Mariko needs to be edited, but she'll be done when she fully discloses her entire repertoire.

You're free to determine what everyone does for science next, or if you want to practice basic skills.

I feel like some sparring would probably be worthwhile, as our melee people still aren't that great. Also, I'm curious if we can change the size of our shield. Being able to use it to protect more than one person would add some nice tankiness to our team.

Also, dodge training. Ariane and Mariko need it desperately. Avoiding blows is the best way to not get injured, which is the most grief-expensive part of most of our fights.

We've got a lot of useful gimmicks, but Ariane and Mariko especially need better base stats to reliably land hits and avoid taking hits.

Idly you realize that the carved star map and the scabbard of your sabre have a slight pull on the energy too, but focusing the energy on the outer shell produces a round wall of said energy in front of the shield, covering you behind the white glow.
It would be interesting to test what happens if we push energy into the carved star map.

Would vote for this. I like the idea of exploring our shield's possibilities more.

On a related note, Cathy mentioned equipment being used to channel magic (and iirc said it generally holds you back), and this update said we could overload our shield...makes me want to fry the shield in an attempt to get power. Too risky though.

So Mariko is limited to making functional barriers from the ground... You think she could modify it so that she can grow 'spikes' instead?

Also Tamiko's saber upgrade is apparently permanent and can be further developed, along with 11 others with it's own potential unique abilities. She tapped into something interesting. Very interesting.

I agree.

Kyouko's gone mad with loneliness. Hence, she's talking to her illusory clone.

:V

We should get Cathy to help all of us with dodging, she would be more aggressive since she came from Paris, also probe her on how Japanese magical girls fight if she already encounter them. All for Tokyo.

Honesty I love Ariane's abilities.

[X] Take some time to practice your basic skills.
-[X] Spar with Mariko and Ariane one on one.
-[X] While you're sparring, the other can work on dodging with Kishi.
