What Happened That Night, part 2
The ceiling of the hospital was getting duller each passing day, Kimiko decided. After several days of laying around on the hospital bed, hooked to an oxygen mask, she was starting to wish for something else to watch for a change. Like good dreams, for example.
Kimiko carefully turned to watch the table between the window and her bed. A couple of jars filled with sleeping pills lay on a tray. She had taken them for the evening, but it would take a while before they kicked in. Until then, she...
Kimiko tried closing her eyes, vainly hoping that something would change. But the same face, the lifeless eyes and open mouth came back to her vividly, just like every other time she tried closing her eyes. And again he opened her eyes with a jolt and a quick inhale of panic.
"A-are you okay?"
Tamiko's cracking voice cut Kimiko out of her thoughts, something she was glad for. While her sister had gotten off with lighter injuries, she was still put on observation due to smoke inhalation and minor injuries. Fortunately, they were granted bed next to each other so they wouldn't have to feel lonely.
"I-I... I don't like seeing y-you so... sad."
Holding out her arm between their beds, Tamiko was doing her best trying to hold back the crying again. However, the sobbing tone on her voice gave out her inability to do so. Kimiko couldn't really blame her for that. She was sure she would start crying too if she tried to talk.
"But... W-when we get out... L-let's go somewhere else and... watch the stars together, okay?"
Kimiko weakly reached out to meet her sister's arm in response, and grasped it gently. It was a silly and stupid idea, but both of them still smiled at each other as Kimiko's consciousness slowly faded away for the night.

"So, anyways, I'll be your legal guardian from now on. So if there's anything you'd like me to bring here, just send me a message."
Kimiko and Tamiko both watched the sitting form of their uncle Hirohito. The man had taken a couple of days to actually visit the two of them when they were still awake. In their surprise, neither one of them could think of anything to ask for.
Outwardly their uncle wasn't in very good shape at all. The bloodshot eyes and the bags underneath them told that he probably hadn't slept at all during the last few days. Still, he had now taken some time to come explain the situation to the two of them before leaving for another night shift in work.
He had been doing a lot of those after the fire, and Kimiko wondered what he was even trying to accomplish by over-working himself.

Kimiko stared at the empty canvas in front of her, unsure what to do with it. After some long talks with the therapist working on her case, she had been given the equipment to paint on the hospital bed. While normally an idea that was frowned upon by the staff, the sheer amount of sleep deprivation from the nightmares had caused the staff to relent and allow her this. She apparently needed some way to express herself and what she was feeling.
She wasn't really sure how this was going to help, but this sure did beat just laying on the bed. She was no master artist, but she was fairly good at arts in school, and it's not like she lacked any time to practice here. Who knows, maybe she could learn to like it.
Kimiko grabbed the brush and drew a black line across the canvas. Perhaps she could give this an honest try...
===
"Don't worry, I'll come see you every day! So you don't have to worry about being alone here."
Kimiko stared at the smiling form of her sister sitting next to her bed. After a few weeks under observation and treatment, Tamiko had finally been deemed to be ready for release. Naturally, she was filled with boundless energy at the prospect of going back to school and her friends.
While she was a bit jealous of her sister, Kimiko could feel happy for her too. It was difficult to dislike that happy smile after all. But it didn't stop her from feeling afraid of being alone with her nightmares. The ones she had captured in the pile of paintings inside her drawer...
Then she felt her forehead being repeatedly prodded. Tamiko was smiling mischievously above her, and pushing her index finger to Kimiko's head. She protested weakly with a raspy voice.
"That's... my trick... dummy..."
Tamiko just stuck out her tongue in defiance.
"Naah, it's mine now! But anyways... I guess I'll have to go now, uncle's waiting."
Tamiko reluctantly rose from her seat and started walking towards the room's door. Kimiko stared at the retreating from of her sister, with the feelings of fear growing with each passing step.
"Tamiko... When I get out... we're still going to... watch those stars, right?"
With her weak voice straining from the effort, Kimiko called out to her sister, hoping for some final reassurance to her fears.
"Yup! And we are going to catch a shooting star too, sis, I promise! Just stay strong, okay!"
===
"Huh, you are giving this to me?"
Kimiko nodded at Tamiko from her upright sitting position. With not much else to do in the hospital, she spent a lot of her time painting. Most commonly she was unsuccessfully trying to put forward the feeling, face of... that night...
However, she also did other pictures. Sometimes they were simple ones, born from a single though and moment, and then left forgotten. Occasionally, she would put more effort into some of the more interesting ideas, and end up with rather beautiful paintings.
This time, however...
"
It is.. incredible, just incredible. You have gotten awesome at this! Uh, what is this called, by the way?"
Well, Tamiko was probably exaggerating a bit to make her feel better, but Kimiko had put a lot of her effort and dreams onto that single canvas.
"It's called... Hoshizora... dummy."
===
"So we ended up covering Ami in tomatoes!"
Both of the sisters were in hysterics, giggling maniacally at the incident. Tamiko had managed to get into some very silly situations on her own. It made Kimiko somewhat sad that she couldn't see it first-hand, but her sister was pretty forthcoming about the shenanigans she and her friends got into.
She just hoped she could participate soon.
===
"Sorry I haven't visited this week... But I've gotten busy with my friends in school... Still, we actually got into this funny situation-"
Kimiko smiled weakly at Tamiko's explanation. While she was feeling somewhat upset with her sister not visiting for the past few days, Tamiko always had some story to tell about her day or, barring that, some book they would read together.
Yet, she couldn't help feeling sad. Their friends and Tamiko were out there, all having fun together when she was forced to stay here. Sure, she was making progress, but it was still a month before she could get out, and many more before she could finally go see the stars with her sister.
And it hurt a bit every time she heard about the things she was left out of.
===
"Uh, sorry it has been a while, but I've been so busy in school and the exams have been horrible... But hey, it's the summer break!"
The summer was fast approaching, and so was the date for Kimiko's release. It had been too long since she had the chance to really explore the world outside the hospital again. And this time she also had her own news to tell: her painting skills had improved enough for her submission to be adequate enough for the art school she had looked at.
The letter of acceptance had been delivered to her by uncle Hirohito yesterday. And for once she was hoping to be able to tell a story in turn... But she didn't really get the chance.
"Well, I had asked my friends if they wanted to come visit you too, but they declined. Everyone had something else to do for the holidays..."
Why would they do that? She was being released soon, but surely they could still come see her here? They days got so lonely at times...
"But we've been planning for an awesome beginning for the summer break. It is going to be so much fun!"
And couldn't they wait for a week so she could participate too? Couldn't they let her join in?
"Well, I'll need to get going. I promised my friends we would meet in the park today..."
And when had it become her friend instead of their friends? Why was Tamiko so happy to leave her here?
'You look like you need a helping hand.'
As Tamiko left the hospital room, a sudden lump had appeared on Kimiko's bed. The creature looked like a strange mix of a white cat and a rabbit with strange ear ornaments. It stared at her with clear red eyes, and whipped its long tail adorably around while its high-pitched voice resonated in her head.
'I am Kyubey! And I am offering you the chance for a single wish, a single miracle. By making a contract with me, you would become a Magical Girl that fights against evil witches, and in exchange you would get a single wish for anything you want!'
The creature was pretty strange, and the words made no real sense to Kimiko. However, she did understand the concept of a wish, and was feeling somewhat intrigued.
"And what are the limitations?"
'You have been blessed with incredible potential! You could wish for nearly anything, and it would come true, Kimiko.'
It was a pretty good-sounding deal. Kimiko was no stranger to Magical Girl shows, so becoming a heroine of the people didn't seem so bad, whatever these witches were. Add in the fact that you got a single wish out of the deal.
And she could wish for anything. It was difficult to decide, since there was so much to choose fro-
My friends.
...Perhaps in a better world, Kimiko would have stopped to think of the consequences and implications of making a wish. Perhaps she would have thought longer and harder about such a life-changing decision. But this is not such a world, and Kimiko made a single wish.
My friends.
"My wish? ...I wish my sister would never outshine me again!"
Inside the hospital, a faint shockwave could be felt passing by. A moment later, everyone continued minding their own business, unaware of what had just transpired
In an apartment further in the town, a man with two nieces to care for finally gave out. There was no discernible reason not to take the job offer abroad...
In the sunny park, a single happy girl sat on a bench, waiting for her friends who would never show up.
And in the hospital room a single young girl gave up on her promise to go and see the stars.
