Looks like the rolling being at times where I'm not sleeping was a fluke and we are back to rolling during what is very early morning time for me (aka I'm still asleep; I'm mostly saying this to let people know why they don't see me all that involved with the rolling, bar the 89 I rolled for the Social Roll in Pride 2.5).
I finally caught up with this quest! Mako is cool, nerdy, and adorable. Not much to say other than that. It's just cool to see Rei getting a new ally.
Also, will the newbie MG/Rider always try to attack someone if they're connected to the void? I mean, the void itself is evil, but that doesn't mean someone's connected to it is evil as well. It just feels like a Black/White way to think about it.

I mean if their a newbie then probably yes. The Void... from what I know it kids is the reason all these Shades are around. Some may not tho... I guess it may just be person to person?
Also reputation helps, like what Lumina seems to be forming... which thinking about it Lumina becoming it's own guild would be funny
As warned, here's a new omake. Based on a potentially terrifying interaction that would occur from having both Zealantis and the Spirit Commune ability. Forgive me if it's not the best quality, I literally wrote this up over the course of an hour or so? Hope you enjoy!
Kaiju Rumble
Day of Awakening
(Rei POV)
"HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Do you see, 'Roze'?! This is what happens when you defy Umbra!"
The mad laughter of Dokurokan echoes through the air as you look on in horror at how badly the situation has deteriorated. Due to your efforts in the previous weeks, you felt you and your allies had prepared enough to handle whatever Umbra could throw at you.
Nothing could have prepared you for the lengths Dokurokan would go to kill you.
THUD
You stare helplessly as what can only be described as a KAIJU stomps its way through the city. You'd managed to get the upper hand on Dokurokan, with Akemi keeping his backup occupied, but he apparently decided if he was going down, he'd take as many people with him as possible.
THUD
The Giant Shade had been summoned as part of what you assume was a contingency your Nemesis was saving for when he was about to lose. As soon as it appeared, it started to rampage, and you can only imagine how many lives its already claimed.
THUD
It looks like someone carved a monstrous bipedal thing out of greyish-black stone, with what seems like oil flowing out from between the plates of its body. Whatever it is made of, it's incredibly durable, with Kirata's strongest spells only able to chip out relatively small chunks from the creature. Nothing else your friends have done has had any visible effect. According to Jun's commentary over your communicator, apparently the army is being prepared to move in.
THUD
"Face it, Roze, you're helpless. Nothing you have in those little cards of yours can compare to what I've unleashed. So just accept your failure and DIE like all good wannabe heroes do!" You hear Dokurokan's mocking words, but they don't fully register. You're racking your brain to try and find SOMETHING you can do to fight the Giant Shade. For once, the voices in your head are as lost as you.
(RUUUMBLE)
Wait, was that ... .suddenly you feel the weight of a presence upon your mind. A voice that had never vocalized since it appeared amongst the others. Its power was greater than anything you'd been able to bring forth from the deck so far. Maybe powerful enough to defeat the Giant Shade. Silent and imposing, you now FEEL its desire. To come forth and fight an entity of similar size and power. But can you risk it?
THUD
You can't afford not to try. You turn to your Nemesis, the broken part of your helmet revealing your slight smirk, causing him to falter.
"No. No, you're bluffing. How in hell can you possibly have an answer to me summoning a KAIJU?!" You hear a bit of hysteria and uncertainty creep into his voice. In lieu of answering, you simply turn towards the Giant Shade, pull out a specific card, and focus. A burst of power comes out of you, and continues to flow.
THUD
Between one moment and the next, the Giant Shade is suddenly body slammed by a LEVIATHAN. The Worldsea Dragon Zealantis called forth by your powers roars in challenge before clashing with the other giant, attacks that can flatten entire city blocks being exchanged by creatures that dwarf their surroundings. Dokurokan slowly turns to you, before speaking in a low, disbelieving tone "You. Have a Kaiju of your own. HOW?!"
You shrug, smirk becoming a cheeky smile. "Oh, just something I picked up a few weeks ago." You can FEEL the sheer rage and murderous intent coming off your Nemesis, before with a wordless yell he charges you.
(Zealantis POV)
When you first manifested in the little one's mind, you were unimpressed. You were supposed to lend your power to this tiny thing? This weak, frail creature, who couldn't even fully comprehend your size and power? So you kept silent. Your presence was always there, but never at the forefront. Eventually the others realized you weren't planning to do much, and left you alone.
But you watched. You may have given the impression of disinterest, but you were always watching. And this "Rei" proved to be tenacious. Determined and driven, willing to go to lengths few would to assist those she considers friends. A fierceness in her soul during battle, even with the blunders she makes at times. Maybe she could be worthy of your power, in time.
And now her opponent has brought forth something worth using your power against. A colossal monster, one she is helpless against otherwise. And so, you impose your presence upon her mind, making her feel your excitement.
(RUUUMBLE)
You feel her recognize your desire, and see her begin gathering her power to call you into the world. And when she does, you immediately engage the other Giant. Roaring in challenge, you begin to exchange blows. You distantly feel Rei begin fighting the skull-faced guy from before, but your focus is on your own opponent. Your footfalls crater the ground, the water that manifests in your presence pooling in them, mixing with the oil spawned from the stone-like behemoth. You know that Rei would prefer the city to be relatively intact, so you decide that you should finish this fight, nevermind how excited fighting a relative equal has made you.
You call forth the water. All of the liquid summoned forth by you begins to gather beneath your enemy, deepening until it covers their lower legs and restricts their movement. In defiance of all physics, the water does not spill out into adjacent streets, held in place by your WILL. You proceed to slam into the behemoth once more, this time clamping your teeth down upon its shoulder, as your back half begins to submerge into the water. You grasp onto its body as best you can, and begin dragging it down. You feel its struggles to free itself pick up in urgency, as if it can tell that once it is submerged it will die. You refuse to let go, and soon you have submerged fully, the behemoth's head the only thing above the water. It manages to give off one last, desperate cry before you pull it under. The water spawned from your clash begins to disappear, with your influence on the surroundings no longer present.
Your presence settles back into Rei's mind, just in time to see her land a final blow on the one she calls "Dokurokan". You feel her gratitude towards you, and you give a quiet rumble of acknowledgement before withdrawing your presence, content to watch once again.
Also, will the newbie MG/Rider always try to attack someone if they're connected to the void? I mean, the void itself is evil, but that doesn't mean someone's connected to it is evil as well. It just feels like a Black/White way to think about it.
That social roll wasn't to convince Mako; it was to hide any killing intent that might instinctively bubble up out of annoyance and convince Tako and the other three sea creatures piloting Mako like a ragdoll not to jump you.
Mako's smart. But the creatures that he's bonded with, for all their personality, are still animals at the end of the day.
Damn, in 1 hour? Shit's peak. Granted, you guys didn't pick Kaijus back in World creation, but if you did, this definitely seems like a scene I'd write. +50 EXP, +10 EP.
WONDERFUL JOB!!!! It was so nice to read and just AHHHH
I really hope we can get a scene like that soon- that just reeeaaallly made me want to get spirit commune next it just AHHH
And I know Kermie said because we didn't choose Kaiju we can't have something exactly like this happen BUUT-
One: Why not just one Kaiju, as a treat for when the enemy gets a crit roll in summoning a shaaddeee
Two: Mecha toys exist. Why no give Umbra a gundam/super robot?
WONDERFUL JOB!!!! It was so nice to read and just AHHHH
I really hope we can get a scene like that soon- that just reeeaaallly made me want to get spirit commune next it just AHHH
Same. It was a good Omake, and we Are getting a level up next update thanks to all the exp the omakes have been raking in. But I f I remember correctly some of our skills may get upgrades once we reach level 5, so who knows? I'm up for getting spirit commune or continue developing the assassin skill three.
Why not make an AU omake using the outline from the character/world creation posts? Kind of like the "Stage slightly to the left" Omakes in Project Prometheus.
Honestly, I think that you should say no more than once in a while, girlie. It would do you a lotta good!
>I like how the troll dude thinks!
The new guy that you just heard in your head is named Blackbeard, and he's a troll, who's also a pirate, who leads a pirate organization. Full of other pirate trolls. Called the Plunder Patroll. And yes, that spelling was correct.
In all honesty, you aren't even awake enough to be surprised anymore. It is what it is.
Oh please, we aren't so bad. It's really just the fact that we haven't gotten to know each other that well yet!
Goldie, I don't think that's really helping our new Captain…
The other three that you just heard were Goldenhair and Bluebeard respectively. Yes, they're named after their hair colors. Because of pirate tradition or something.
At this point, an entire kaiju could climb into your head and you wouldn't notice. That's how crowded it's getting.
It's not much better up here in the metaphorical commentator's booth. How much has Purrson been doing recently?
Uh, he's been making some progress from what Akemi's told you? But then again, she's been getting a lot of bed rest recently after that training session with Kirata, so you wouldn't know. At the very least, your internal monologue isn't becoming external or anything. That was a big problem back at Sunshine, when you were talking with Mai. Speaking of, you wonder how the old lady's doing. Is the bar ok? Is Animate going to be ok with you away-
You blink, and look at Himari. She looks a bit annoyed at you, but it doesn't look like she's really mad or anything. You've gotta pay more attention to the world outside of your head. "Sorry about that, I got caught up in the conversation between all the spirits inside my head."
"Well, I could tell, considering that I could hear all this whispering around you- but that's no excuse for missing our train stop! Now c'mon, let's go. Besides, aren't you the one that wanted us to go to the library?" Himari groans.
Before you can respond, the train doors open, and Himari grabs you by the arm and drags you through the doors.
I like her! She's feisty!
>She could also probably kill Rei in five seconds, so I'd recommend not saying that to her face. But you're definitely right! Shibuya Central LIbrary
Thursday, February 28, 2080. 10:05 AM
Despite the fancy name, the library in front of you isn't very crowded, or at least not much more crowded than the average Shibuya building. A few people walk in and out, but the glitzy metropolitan glamor of Shibuya is absent here.
Himari looks up at the three story building, and sighs. "Man, I just realized something. I haven't been to a library in years."
"Really?" you respond, a bit incredulous, "I thought that the Guild would make you go there every once in a while at least in order to learn about the world."
A sad look passes over her face, but it's so momentary that you almost doubt that you saw it in her blank eyes. "Parents never needed me to go, since we had a decent amount of books at home. I remember that Kirata would read me some books when she was feeling better. After my recruitment, I ended up just being able to pirate any PDF that I needed to read off of the internet…"
Aye, that's definitely a sort of piracy, though not really a good one.
>Wait, do you guys even steal things?
Miss, I think all our definitions of "pirate" are very different…
You walk into the building, and take a left turn past a tree growing underneath a skylight into the informational section. Himari begins to walk ahead of you, her eyes seemingly locked on something else. "Hey, can you do some of the research on your own? I wanna figure out the electronic book finding system this place apparently has. See if I can get to the really juicy stuff about Awakening Day."
"Alright, you do that. But be careful-"
[Himari Technical Check; DC 40/60/90]
[Himari d100=90. Incredible Success!]
Aaaannnddddd she's already off. Oh dear. At the very least, it looks like she's having fun conversing with the HumaGear librarian- goddamn, she's already got ten books! Look at her go!
In the meantime, you just go to grab a book from the "modern history" shelf, and sit down somewhere comfortable. Even the voices of the spirits start to quiet down, as you begin to read…
Awakening Day: Origins Explained
By Haibara Itadori
Awakening Day was originally conceived by the Archmage Marcus Armstrong, from America, back in 2065. After the 3-year long Great Magic War of 2060, people distrusted Magic, and for good reason. From their point of view, Magic was what the governments gave soldiers as the new weapons of war.
Marcus wanted to prove that magic could be used to inspire hope as well, so he gathered the Archmages of all the countries that had their Archmages settling into their new leadership positions, and formed an unofficial Archmage Coalition. They would gather their efforts in order to set up spectacular parades and performances in major cities all over the world, showing off the good side of magic. Awakening Day was essentially the result of that worldwide effort slowly becoming tradition.
Today, Awakening Day is as anticipated as Thanksgiving or the American Fourth Of July- though maybe if we're using American terminology as a comparison, it's as anticipated as the Super Bowl.
In this essay, I will be exploring the ways in which different nations celebrate this new and strangely contemporary holiday, as well as the first Archmages that helped set it up…
"Hey, what're you reading?"
HEY, WHO THE FU-
[Social Check; DC 50]
[d100=34. Fail!]
You swing around instinctively, and with that comes the swing of a punch. You feel your fist collide with flesh, and you hear someone falling to the ground.
It's only in the second afterwards that you realize that you've probably made a mistake, as you actually look at the dude you just punched.
Uh, Rei, I appreciate the caution, but I don't think that dude's an assassin. -Hatsume
You just punched a guy?! What?!
Welcome to the club, Bluebeard. It's like this every two days on average.
The dude has rectangular glasses, which you can at least tell the court that you didn't break. His black hair is long and smooth- if it weren't for the bare amount of stubble on his chin, you might have mistaken him for a girl. Probably about 5 or so years older than you as well. He readjusts his glasses, before beginning to get up.
[Social Check; DC 70/90]
[d100=70. Success!]
You offer your hand out to him, and he takes it. "Sorry about that!" you answer, putting on your best "normal girl" mask, "You startled me a bit, and some of the martial arts training kicked in."
He groans, before taking off his glasses, cleaning them a bit, and rubbing his slightly swollen cheek. "Nah, it's ok. Guess I was being a bit nosy there. Name's Hikaru Kazuo- I'm the assistant librarian here. I was just meaning to ask you if you wanted any similar books, but guess you don't need any."
Kazuo Hikaru
The Shibuya Central Library Assistant Librarian- try and say that five times fast! A very kind man, who seeks to make sure that knowledge can be spread out all over the world. He also bakes a mean croissant, and he's willing to punch you in the face if you pronounce that as "quaso".
"No, no, it's fine! I'm just trying to study up on Awakening Day, really. The name's Rei. Rei Maruki."
He puts a hand to his chin, seemingly thinking about something. He glances at his watch, and then nods.
In the background, you can vaguely hear Himari shelving and grabbing and reshelving new books at a blistering pace- that's probably fine.
…ok, how fast is that girlie going right now? Is she gonna be ok?
>I mean, the odds of her finding something useful are above 50%, so at least that's in our favor.
"In our favor?" Really? -Fuma
If Hikaru notices Himari, he doesn't seem to care. "...Modern History of Magic course, right? It doesn't seem like I've got much to do right now, so I'd be willing to help. Here, let me call up a few books."
He taps a few buttons on his phone, and as you read, he grabs a few books from an automatically moving platform on wheels and slides them over to your table. Himari seems to have found the book that she's been looking for, so it's time to start reading.

[Rei: 60]
[Himari: 80]
(...) after the disastrous Awakening Day of 2074, which some citizens of Japan described as "a circus, but without any entertainment", the government outsourced the Awakening Day festivities to both the resident Archmages of Japan and a promising up and coming entertainment company known as Showtime Studios.
"Ah, remember to fact check that! Was the author of that article a paid writer for Showtime?"
"Nope, doesn't look like he was, contracted by a reputable news source instead."
Showtime Studios combined Magic with their mechanical animatronic frames, allowing for a greater range of movement and for the generated creatures to move around and fly freely through the air. More recently, a more efficient way to make these parade floats/creatures has been invented. A hard light shell around a hollow metallic frame, with small amounts of magic at the joints being added to get it to move.
Once the parade is done, usually one or two of the Japanese Archmages makes a speech, and then awards for new advancements in Magic and sometimes Alchemy are given out. This leads to funny sequences where certain Archmages, like Akasuki Bashira, have given awards to… themselves. However, this usually doesn't happen now, since both Magic and Alchemy are both moving forwards at exponential speed.
"But doesn't that mean that there's a part of the parade where all the floats just… stop?"
"Correct, Rei- there's a computer system controlling all the parade floats that can lock all the metal skeletons in place. It's in Showtime's control, but the government also has a metaphorical hand in it."
As for the other Archmages, one is on security, while the other watches from home. The vaunted No. 1 Archmage of Japan, Yamaguchi Izanagi, is currently on a long trip around the world, attempting to learn all different styles of magic. We here at Daily Japan Reporting wish him well!
>…almost certainly a cover up.
You exhale, as you finish up the article. It was definitely an entertaining read, but kinda boring at the same time. You look over at Himari, who nods at you. You've gotten what you've come for- you understand what Awakening Day represents to the public.
…And you can't help but realize that Umbra will do anything to crush something like that. You don't care much for the public, but well, you're concerned for Kirata. You should show up and fight, if only for her.
Heck yeah! We ain't abandoning our friends any time soon!
I've been with you for a while now- may as well finish up this even if it hurts. Me and Gargoyle are with you until the end and through hell, Rei. [👍]
You look over at the man, who's lounging in his own comfortably cushioned chair reading a book of his own. He doesn't have his glasses on, and he even spins around a bit. It's cute. "Thanks, Kazuo. Probably would have…" you remember your cover, "bombed my class without your help."
He nods, barely looking up from his book. "It's nothing. You and your friend" he gestures with a book in hand to Himari, "need anything, don't hesitate to come over to Central Library."
"Thanks. You actually remind me a lot of someone else I met, y'know? Being so inviting. She also had the last name Kazuo, but she said something about being an only child."
…No, it's probably not a Himari situation. They look too different, and most people aren't caught in a real life kabuki show like we are. -Kizaru
"Oh, Kazuo Aoi? I'm her adoptive brother."
"Wait, what?!"
>Oh, you've GOT to be kidding me-
Certain checks for the missions (Magic Is Showtime! and Missing Piece) have gotten easier!
The check for the action (Try to socialize with Aoi) has gotten easier!
Rei now has an inkling about what Umbra could do later!
Thanks to reading about and realizing how normal people celebrate holidays, Himari gains +2 to her Social!
Hikaru Kazuo has been added to Personae Dramatis. (Relationship Level: 0)
Leveled Up!
Level 5 (EXP: 190/750)
-Over Damage increases to 5.
-Gain +5 to one stat.
General Buff
Gain two extra +3/+4 upgrades to two unique stats on top of the one buff you already have. So for example, you could get 2 Magical upgrades and one Mental upgrade, or a Physical, Mental, and Social upgrade. Please note that you cannot go with 3 total upgrades into one stat.
Alternatively, you may take 1 skill per level up from one of the below skill trees.
Assassin Skills (Offensive)
Have Rei remember one of the attacking skills that she learned as an assassin, and have her train in it again.
-[ ] Focus On The Target
-[ ] Weaken Target
-[ ] Sudden Kill
Focus On The Target
[Passive]
When you hit a Weakness, it deals x2 damage instead! However, you take +3 damage from all attacks.
Weaken Target
DC: 60
(Usable two times per Scene)
Signature Attack of the Guild. Deal 1d8 piercing damage to one character. For every 10+ this rolls over DC, lower Crit Threshold when attacking that character by 5 instead of applying Over Damage.
Sudden Kill
DC: 90
(Usable one time per Combat)
Signature Attack of the Guild. Deal 4d8 piercing damage to one character. If this Crits, deal x4 damage.
Assassin Skills (Defensive)
Have Rei remember one of the not-dying skills that she learned as an assassin, and have her train in it again.
-[ ] Insulting Taunt
-[ ] Extra Focus
Insulting Taunt
(DC 50, Social)
Halve the damage from the next attack that you'll take, and give Taunt 1-3 to you or one of your allies.
Extra Focus
Inner Focus triggers when you have 25 or less Health now.
Power Of ???
Have Purrson (or Kirata, if she has the time) teach you some weird shit.
-[ ] Cat Attack!
-[ ] Spirit Commune
-[ ] Trigger V. Burst
Cat Attack!
DC: 50, Physical
(Usable two times per Scene, only available when Akemi is in the fight)
Throw Purrson at an enemy's face to impart the fear of god and cats into them, dealing d6 Slashing damage. That enemy takes a -10 reduction to their next two rolls, and next turn, you get two actions!
On Crit, it becomes a canonical fact that the enemy you targeted had a cat allergy, and they skip one of their actions when they get hit by this. Yes, really.
Spirit Commune
DC: 70, Magical
(Usable once per Combat)
As an additional cost to use this move, lose 5 Health.
Take a turn to manifest your current Rider Form's Spirit as a summon. This Spirit has stats and health calculated by the stat boosts their rider form gives you. This summon stays around for 2 (3 on Crit) turns, and will act independently using the moves they have.
On successfully using this move, you may have a free Form Change. (However, Break Down's stat buff does not trigger.)
Trigger Void Burst!
Magical, Two Times Per Combat
DC: 50/70
Activate Void Burst of your own volition- but focus yourself this time. On success, Rei enters the powerful Void Burst state for two-three turns, but she's able to control herself and distinguish friend from foe. Cannot be used while Void Burst is on cooldown. Also gives Rei +30 Awakening!

That Himari stat boost thing was probably one of the weirdest things I've ever written, bar one or two exceptions from back in middle school. Huh.
Happy voting, heroes! Now go give Rei something cool. This is mostly just me warming up for the Purrson talk, so apologies if this update seemed a bit slow.
Once is happenstance, twice is a coincidence, but if we reach three times...here's hoping we don't got a clone (Called Raye) running around. Because by then its just the Universe picking on her.
In my defense, Himari being Kirata's sibling was supposed to be a mid-late season twist! Those two sibling things were not supposed to be together this quickly!
And I'll figure out some way to make Blackbeard's text look better.

Also while I'm yapping: I really love Roze having the spirits all talk to her in her mind, it really makes all the long thinking bits of these chapters more fun.
But... I am worried if your having a hard time with them all Kermie. And worried when we get even more ones it'll get harder on ya.
