Paper Mario: A Tale of Stars and Justice
Chapter 1
By Solar Gem X

Last Time in PM: TSJ

The Star and Human Duo of Rei and Himari had managed to put a stop to Captain Cheep Beard's Plot to seal Bubble Lake in order to garner a Pirate Crew. As the duo set off to Tiadannanys house, they will need to prepare for the next step of their journey.

Present Time:
Toad Town Central Square ost

It was a pleasant afternoon In Toad Town, the Toads were talking and working, the shops were where re-Stocking, the Postal Service was delivering Letters and of course the Local guards and reconstruction Toads were hard at work rebuilding the damaged sections of the Town after Bowsers little "acquisition" of Peach's Castle. That indeed is the case, you see, after the violent castle napping, a good chunk of the Military Trained Toads were taken alongside the Castle, leaving only those that were absent during the party and a pocket full of trainees. These toads, alongside many others have been slowly making sure the Rest of the Town is safe, while the builders fix some of the ruined passageways to other locals. Which would explain what's about to happen. As the star and human duo near the town gate, they are stopped by a pair of Toad Guards.

Toad Guard 1: Halt! Who goes there?

Rei: Sorry to interrupt sir Toad, my name is Rei, and this is my companion, Himari. We would like to enter the town.

Toad Guard 2: Huh, aren't you a respectful lass? Haven't seen you two before, why do you want to enter the town? Also where did you guys come from? We haven't seen a lot of traffic in this direction for quite some time.

Himari: Ugh… don't even mention it… The route over to Bubble Lake was being blocked by some Pirate wannabe and we had to deal with that before we could come back. As for business… well I was planning on going to the Postal office in order to write some letters, maybe do some shopping. How about you Rei?

Rei: Hmm… I'm planning on heading towards the Shooting Star Summit, I have some personal business to attend there.

Toad Guard 1: Huh… Bubble Lake was Blocked? Well that explains why we haven't had that much traffic from that direction. Ok, we taken your statements, sorry for the hassle ladies, things have been tense after Bowser's latest stunt. And that's not counting the aftermath.

Rei: Its no problem, your just doing your jobs. But if you would not mind, what do you mean by Aftermath?

Toad Guard 2: UGH!! Where do we even start? As you probably know, King Bowser stole the entirety of Peach's Castle, which included like 75% of the Mushroom Guard that helped with patrols and maintaining the peace in the Surrounding Area. Mind you, Toad Town and most of the nearby settlements are Very peaceful, and we rarely actually have to do any disciplinary actions. But with the lack of a guard there's been some sightings of shady figures running about, so the remaining guard has been tense. Secondly, with the whole castle napping it resulted in some infrastructure damage In the town, so some areas are off limits for the Time being. But honestly the worst of it is that we've actually been attacked by some of Bowsers Minions or some other miscreant that have been taking advantage of the confusion. Due to the lack of manpower the Minions have been periodically launching attacks. Its Honestly only thanks to Luigi and some rather ambitious rookies that there has not been any more damages.

Himari: *Raises Eyebrows in Surprise* Jeez… you guys have had it ruff. Good to hear that you have had some help keeping things civil, also Luigi is helping? I would have thought he would come out and about trying to tackle the situation in hand.

Toad Guard 1: Oh he probably would have, but shortly after the incident Mario returned to Toad Town and met up with the remnants of the Guard and his Brother, letting them in on the situation. The Two brothers pummeled a squad of Goombas and Koopas that tried to invade and after some deliberation the two decided to split up. Mario would figure out a way to get to Peach's Castle while Luigi stayed in toad Town in order to protect it. Last I heard Mario has gone eastward towards the Pleasant Path, you just missed him actually.

Rei: Ah… that's good to hear. It takes a slight weight off my shoulders knowing that one of the Star Children is on the case.

Toad Guard 2: …Yeah? (Looks at Rei weirdly at the Star Children part, but lets it go). Anyway its been a pleasure ladies, but we should return to our duties, go on ahead.

Rei and Himari: Thank you.

As the duo entered the town they decided to split up for the moment, Himari would use the coins she obtained during her little escapade in Bubble Lake in order to sent some mail to her Grand Father and Sister in order to ask about possible assistance in getting to Peach's Castle or maybe Star Haven; after Rei told her about her hometown. Rei, on Himari's insistence, gave her the coins she had collected as well in the odd chance she could find something useful on one of the shops, especially since there's apparently a Badge Shop in town, which could prove to be useful. While she did that Rei would climb The Shooting Star Summit in order to contact Star Haven, hoping to get an Update on her Home's current situation.

Rei P.O.V
Shooting Star Summit

Rei: "Hopefully there shouldn't be much interference between here and the Summit. Even if I can't fly up to town, The peak of the summit should be high enough to let me contact one of the Adult Stars Spirits, or at worst one of the child stars"…

As Rei spoke to herself, she began trekking towards Shooting Star Summit. As she surmise the path was mostly free of enemies only having a Goomba or two in the way, who really where mostly an afterthought, being quickly vanquished by the Star Warrior. Other than that and a quick introduction to Merlow, a mage that live at the foot of the mountain, Rei's trek took at most 10 minutes.

Rei: ''Ok… what were the words again…? Ah yes". *Ahem* "When stars are away, when stars afraid, don't forget to look up since help is never far away".
Does Rei contact anyone?
Rolling: 13
Success!

???: Agh! Watch where your pulling stuff, you nearly hit me! No, the Wishes for sequels should be on the left shelf and Prequels on the right. Wait… Is someone calling? Hello, who is this?

Does Rei recognize the voice?
Rolling:
17 + 5 (This is literally your Hometown)

Extreme Success!

Rei: …wait… MAI IS THAT YOU!?

Mai: REI, YOU'RE ALIVE!? Oh thank the Stars. What the Heck happen? Where are you?

Mai "Star Bright" Hidejima
Entertainment and Game Star

An old friend of Rei for over a decade. Where Rei followed the way of the Star Warrior, Mai choose a more mundane path, games and animation. Since Star Haven is one of the central focus points for wish granting (Well at least when the Star Rod was Around) it is actually divided into different sectors that are in charge of specific wishes, Mai just so happens to be the director/ Adult Star Spirit in charge of wishes pertaining to animation, videogames, sequels, prequels and all that stuff. An Otaku at heart, Mai took a more humanoid Star Spirit form just like Rei in order to be able to cosplay some of her favorite shows and games (Yes Really). Kind at heart and extremely experience, Mai is probably one of the most experienced Star Spirits, even if she comparatively young, star spirit wise. Also runs a Video Game and Animation selling business on the side, selling said products to rambunctious star spirit kids in her free time. (Hey, being able to see ALL the fine Details when it comes to making games and animation has its perks, and if the Creators of said products mysteriously gain a bunch of coins without any explanation? Well, she doesn't see a problem).

Rei: Mai… you have no idea how good is to hear you again. Might as well get comfortable, this might take a bit.

30 minutes Later Rei managed to catch Mai up on all that has happened recently. Her fight and defeat against Bowser, Waking up on Bubble Lake, meeting Himari, Fighting Captain Cheep Beard and Reaching Toad Town and The Summit.

How is Star Haven Faring?
Rolling:

Major Success!

As she conversed, Mai assured Rei that Star Haven was left mostly intact. The Koopa Kings Attack Rattled the star spirit children a bit, but nobody was hurt. The most damage they took was a couple of things falling of the shelves and the Star Guardian HQ taking some superficial damage, but other than that everything was more or less ok, ignoring the Lost Star Rod and Elder Spirits anyway (Bowser was Sore that they didn't grant his Selfish Wish).

Rei: That's…that's good to hear. I feel like a weight has been taken of my shoulders. Although that still leaves retrieving the Star Rod and locating the Elders, and I have zero clue where they could be.

Mai: Hmm… If you want my recommendation? Maybe you should locate Mario. Some of the Stars at the Tattling division have been active lately, and they think he may have grabbed a partner with said ability along the way. Theres a chance he may have gotten a lead somehow.

Rei: Hmm… Well I don't have any better Ideas. Thanks for the Tip Mai, if what the Toad Guards mentioned is true Mario left not too long ago via the Pleasant Path. If Himari and I hurry, we should be able to catch up.

Mai: Good luck Rei, and stay safe.

As those words left Mai's mouth the connection began to fade, leaving her alone on top of the summit once more.

Rei: Same here Mai, same here. Hopefully Himari has finished with her shopping, we need to get to pleasant Path pronto.

Himari P.O.V
Tower Defense?

Himari: EAT FIRE FLOWER YOU FODDER!

Himari was in fact done with her shopping, but just as she was thinking on maybe buying some ice cream while she waited for Rei, Bowsers Minions Decided to launch ANOTHER attack on Toad Town. Luckily, she was behind some of the barricades when the attack started and a bunch of Goombas, Koopas and Bob-Ombs swarmed the Central Square.

How many Waves of Enemies?
Rolling: 10
10 rounds of enemies incoming!

Apparently, this was a medium size squadron of mooks, the squad that assaulted Toad Town Prior was easily twice as large, although repelled easily thanks to the Efforts of the Mario Brothers. Although the Bob-ombs are new, if what the toads manning the chokepoints have said is any indication. Thankfully the defense force had a stash of Fire Flowers on hand so they have all the "Fire power" they would need.

How does Himari and The Guard Fair?
Rolling:
11+ 5 (Toad Guards and Fire Flowers) + 5 (Luigi!)

Extreme success!

By the Time Rei made it back to the town the fight was mostly over, with only a couple of stragglers remaining. Which were promptly kicked for their efforts.

Rei: Himari are you okay? I'm sorry I took so long and-

Himari: Rei chill. Everybody is ok, most of them were mooks no need to get your Twin tails in a twist. Did you manage to contact your home?

Rei: …yes. Yes, I did. They are all well, Bowser's attack was mostly focused on retrieving the Rod, so Star Haven was spared any damage. Did you manage to complete your endeavors?

Himari's Shopping Trip:
13+ 3 (Jun's Connections)
16
Major Success

Himari: Boy did I! I Started at the post office and managed to make two letters, one for my Grandfather and one for my sister, it would have gone for 50 coins, since apparently the post office has had some problems with international routes. Thankfully, a friend of mine knows a bit about alternative routes and that got me a nice discount, so I only spend 30 coins instead. As for the shops… it seems like the Southwestern passage of Toad Town is under construction, so Harry's Shop is unavailable, but the Shroom Grocery was open and having a special on item bundles, buy 2 get 1 free. So I brough the Mushroom, Honey Syrup and Fire Flower Bundles for about 50 coins. Finally, I went to Rowf's Badge Shop, to look for some potential badges you could use and manage to get 3 badges for ya. A D-Down Pound, a First Attack and, get this, a Double Dip! It cost me 275 coins, but these are definitely worth it. In total it was around 355 coins, probably a lot, but hey at least Cheep Beards ill gotten gains are now in circulation again, so I say it evens out.

Himari's Shopping list:

408-355 coins= 53 coins

1x Letter Towards E. Gadd- A letter Written by Himari towards her Grandfather and send via the Toad Town Postal office. ( E. Gadd will come to Toad Town after Chapter 2 and will be available to buy tech from, he could potentially help you in getting to Peach's Castle or Star Haven. Only Time will tell.

1x Letter for Kirata Kuromi: A letter written by Himari towards her Sister, The Archmage Kirata Kuromi and send via the Toad Town Postal Office. (Due to Himari not being on the same continent right now due to her Archmage Duties, she will take a while to reach toad town, with best estimates being either during or after Chapter 5. Kirata will be able to buy potent Custom Badges or [Redacted] from her once she arrives. Additionally, Kirata's Knowledge of the Arcane arts will almost guarantee you the ability to reach Star Haven, not to sure about Peach's Castle though. The Koopa Clan is notorious for using magic, so its more than likely that the castle is protected against teleportation magic.

3x Mushrooms: Restores 10 HP when used.

3x Honey Syrup: Restores 5 FP when used.

3x Fire Flowers: Launches a barrage of fire balls towards all your enemies, dealing 3 damage to each. Don't use against enemies that are immune to fire. Can also [Redacted].

1x D-Down Pound Badge: For 2 BP, Allows Rei to use D-Down Pound, a Punch or Kick attack that ignores enemies' Defense, for 2 FP.

1x First Attack Badge: For 1 BP, If Rei gets a "First Strike" on a weak enemy (who no longer gives her EXP when defeated), Rei will defeat it without entering a battle.

1x Double Dip Badge- For 1 BP, Allows Rei to use 2 items in one turn for 3 FP. (Yes, really. This got uber nerf in the sequel, costing 6 BP. Maybe Ill make it that Mushroom Kingdom Badges and Rougeport Badges are made differently, which affects the resulting badge).

???: Haha, *boom*… Mario? You want to find Mario? *Baboosh* Well that's too bad *Kablooey* because by the end of the day, Mario will be history!

At THAT proclamation the Duo turned toward sone of the downed enemies, the one who spoke being a dented Black Bob-omb who was looking at the duo with a rather smug look on its face.

Rei: Oh, and what's that suppose to mean? I'm pretty sure Mario can take anything you throw at him and keep on jumping.

Bob-omb: Haha! That may be true Cadet, but what would happen if he doesn't realized it until its to late. *Ka-boosh*. By the time he reaches the inner sections of the Koopa Bros. Fortress? Game Over!

Himari: Thanks for the information, but I still don't see how he will fail? A bunch of Koopas aren't that scary.

Bob-Omb: Maybe not alone*boom*…, but how about with some back up? Who has enough Explosive power to level a castle?

Rei and Himari: !!!

Bob-omb: Yeeah that's better. You see lass, Lord Bowser was pretty angry that he got attacked when getting the Star Rod, so he decided to prove a point and called for A LOT of his finest warriors, including the magnificent King Bob-Omb! His Royal Blastness was instructed to assist the Koopa Brothers, and if they were to fall in battle? Their entire fortress has been set to BLOW, with King Bob-Omb as the igniter, so if Mario comes a knocking and wins? KABOOOOM! No more Plumber!

Himari: Blow Up!?

Rei: @#$%! And he already has a head start! We need to get to the fortress and defeat King Bob-Omb, or else…. AAAGH! Himari lets go, Double Time!

Himari: Right Behind you, uuuggh this is going to suck!

Chapter 1: Explosive Shell Power!!!
Mission: Reach Koopa Bros. Fortress and defeat King Bob-Omb before he detonates!

In order to reach the Fortress in time You need to reach a DC of 60 in 10 rolls. If you make the DC before or in 5 rolls you will make it just as Mario is about to enter the Fortress, if you make it in 6 to 7 rolls, he will be mid-way through the fortress and a few moments from reaching the Koopa Bros, Make the DC in 8-9 Rolls and you will get there as he is Fighting the Koopa Bros, 10 or more? You will be too late, and Mario would have defeated the Koopa Bros, causing King Bob-Omb to detonate and destroying the castle with him in it. Game over.

You have a slight bonus thanks to being a decently higher level than needed for this area, and the Fact you have a First Attack Badge. Granting a +5 to your rolls. Rolling a 1-3 will eat up your bonus as you are attacked by enemies. You can also add an additional +2 to your rolls if you hurry up, but you will reach the fortress hurt, and will require the use of items to heal.

Will Rei and Himari run for all that's its worth?

[X] YES!!!
[] NO

Ok then… LETS Roll! (And I did in fact roll for these)

Time to speed Run!

Roll 1:

4+7= 11

DC Lowered to 49

Roll 2:

DC lowered to 46

Fight against 3 Koopas and 2 Goombas.

Roll 3:

6+7= 13

DC Lowered to 33

Team Rei made it pass Koopa Village and nearly Tramble Koopa Koot!

Roll 4:

Because of the Rush they take 3 damage each. But they restore their health to full with 2 mushrooms. (Additionally, Himari currently is cursing Bowser for making his fortresses in distant locations).
(I genuinely rolled for these, damn this actually stressed me out a bit…)

P.O.V Shift
Paper Mario Theme

???: Man that was a long trek. I'm glad we made it to the Fortress, Mario. Now we just need to defeat the Koopa Bros and find the sealed Star Spirit!

???: Man… It really looks a LOT bigger than I thought… No Kooper, you need to be brave, Koopa village is counting on you! Let's do this Mario!

Mario: *Thumbs Up*

In front of a formidable fortress made of stone stand 3 individuals. The first is tall mustachioed man wearing in a red shirt, Blue overalls, boots and a Red Cap with the letter M stamped on it. This is the Hero of the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario. Next to him stand two figures a young Goomba, named Goombario, and a Koopa, named Kooper. These 2 individuals have joined forces with the Mustachioed plumber in order to help him save the Str Spirits and Defeat Bowser. They had managed to reach the Fortress after pursuing the Koopa Bros after Merlon Struck them with his lightning magic, breaking their disguises. Just as they were about to enter the fortress…

???: WAAAAAAAIIIIIIITTTT!!!!!

The trio of heroes jump in surprise as they hear a voice calling out to them, female if the tone were to be believed. As they turn, they can see a massive dust cloud barreling towards them and as it approaches, they see a figure at the front of it, feet screeching as it stops in front of them. As they blink the dirt out of their eyes, they observe the newcomer, or more specifically newcomers.

Both of them look humanoid in nature. The first looked like a young Adult Woman, she was covered in what seemed like a mixture of armor and a flowing dress, with metallic gauntlets and boots. Her hair is tied into pig tails and is colored black, although on closer inspection it actually looks like her hair was made of some kind of stone. She is panting and out of breath, most likely due to her exertion.

???: We…*Huff*... made… *huff* it, Himari. Mario *Huff* you are in *Cough* just… give me a minute.

The other Figure, who they assume was named Himari, was also Female, probably less than 20 years of age if you were to guess, she was wearing and interesting mix of casual and… a lab coat? She was holding a giant Wrench like her life depended on it.

Himari: *Dying scientist noises*

…she looked like she had half a foot in the Underwhere.

Goombario: Umm… are you okay miss?

The unknown figure raises her finger for a moment before taking a deep breath and looking at the trio of heroes directly.

???: *under her breath* "Oh stars now I remember why I hate Running Drills. Yes, Solferina movement is important but doing 50 laps daily is not a "Warm Up", no I can't Just "Overclock myself with star power" I don't have mechanical parts like you".

I'm sorry about that, just some bad experiences. *Ahem* Hello, my name is Rei, and I am a Star Warrior from Star Haven, this is my partner Himari *More Dying Himari noises*. We came here to give you a warning, you were about to walk directly towards a trap.

Mario: *Raises Eyebrows in surprise*

Kooper: A trap!? What do you mean by that?

Rei: *With a tired smile* You might want to sit down, it's a bit of a long story.

Present time, Front of Koopa Bros. Fortress
Paper Mario 64 OST - Koopa Bros Fortress

Rei: …and once we learned about the trap, we came running as fast as we could, I'm pretty sure we trampled over a couple of Bowser's minions on the way…

Rei Gained 30 experience due to making her best impression of a runaway train.

70 exp out of 100)

Goombario: Holy moly! That… would have been really bad. Thanks for the warning, Miss Rei, Miss Himari.

Himari: No problem, Kid. Can't have the hero of the Mushroom Kingdom being blown sky high.

Kooper: But that does make things more complicated, if we don't get rid of King Bob-Omb before we fight the Koopa Brothers they will just drop the fortress on our heads, and if we take too long, there's a good chance they will relocate the Star Spirit, and I don't think we will get a second chance.

Mario: Hmm… I got it! *Italian Sounds*

Rei: You're suggesting we should split up? Hmm… That's probably our best option. One team can go fight the Koopa Bros, while the second team can take on King Bob-Omb. Making sure neither can pull a fast one on us. You guys do have a score to settle with the Koopa Brothers, so Himari and Me could go and take care of the other target, although we will need to figure out where he is…

Himari: Actually, I have a very good idea of where he could be. If they planned on "dropping the entire fortress on Mario" then the best place is probably deep in the basement or a cave beneath the structure. I would place my bets on the basement though, having a bunch of explosives underground could potentially cause problems, plus they are more than likely using Bob-Ombs for the act. They may be walking explosives and in some places be mass producible, but they ARE sentient, and I doubt they would like being underground for who knows how long, even if they have military training. So it's more likely that they are in the structure.

Goombario: Yeah, that sounds about right…I like this plan!

Rei: Ok then its settled. Mario, Goombario and Kooper will continue inside the fortress proper while Himari and I will find the lower levels and confront king Bob-Omb. Let's do this!

As both parties enter the Fortress, they made some way into it before fighting a group of enemies, that gave them a general idea of the Explosive Monarchs location, causing both teams to split off. As Rei and Himari descended further and further into the Fortresses depths, they began to get into conflicts with more ?Bob-Ombs that normal, which meant that they were on the right track. With twist and turns and even a couple of puzzles in which Himari used her Poltergust to activate some switches, they eventually reached the Room where they thought King Bob-Omb laid.

In their process Rei had managed to level up once more, Reaching Level 5 and re learning her Stardust Kick Technique. Not only that, but they also even found a Super Block and managed to increase Himari's Stats!

This Attack can cause enemies to miss their attacks for two turns.

Rei: Ready Himari?

Himari: Ready.

As the Duo enter the basement room, they find themselves face to face with a Gigantic Black Sphere with a White Moustache, a Golden Crown and pristine white gloves and yellow boots. They have Found King Bob-Omb. Next to him are Crates upon crates of inactive Bob-Ombs, just waiting for a spark to set them alight.

King Bob-Omb: Well now… I honestly did not expect visitors at this time of day. How did you even know of my existence Miss…?

Rei: The names Rei, and you can thank one of your subordinates for the heads up, gave us enough time to reach the fortress and warn Mario.

King Bob-Omb: *Sigh* It must have been Bomb Bob, I swear that child has such a dedication to the cause, the fact that he can reform after exploding solidifies it, but by the stars he can't keep his mouth shut, even if his fuse depended on it. Very well, Miss Rei. I can guess that you have come here to "defuse" the situation as it were, but I have been Given my task by King Bowser, and as a Fellow Monarch, I cannot allow myself to be defeated here. So as they say… EN GUARDE!!!

The Lumbering giant begins to move forward in order to attack The Heroes. Just as he is about to strike, Rei deftly dodges and Launches a powerful kick!

That does absolutely nothing…

Rei: What tha! OOF!

Sadly that momentary distraction led to a potent Backhand coming from King Bob-Omb, sending careening towards one of the walls. The monarch slowing down and looking at her opponent.

King Bob-Omb: Is that all? Sad really, but you have no chance young one. My sturdy defenses have been further bolstered by Bowser using the Star Rod on yours truly. You lack the Firepower to do any damage.

Himari: Wait he did what? Let's see… WHAT THE HECK!? *Himari Uses Analyze*

King Bob-Omb
The Explosive Monarch

A King among Bombs and all kind of artillery, King Bob-Omb is an old ally of the Koopa King and leader of most, if not all Black Bob-ombs in the Mushroom Kingdom. He uses his strength, endurance and literal firepower in order to vanquish his foe. He has 30 HP, an attack value of 2 and a defense of…4!? No wonder we can hurt him, he's too sturdy! We Not only that he can generate smaller Bob-Ombs from his hand and lob them at us, dealing 5 damage! This isn't good Rei, we need to find a way to beat his defenses, Fast!

Rei: I know, just give a second! "Think Rei, Think! It's just as Solferina taught you, no matter how powerful the enemy before you, they all have at least 1 weakness. What would a Bob-Omb have as their weakness?

"Water? No water sources here".

"Explosives? No Bob-Omb would help us here".

"Firepower? Obviously, but… Wait! Most Bob-Ombs do explode when exposed to fire… but if a Bob-Omb is potent enough or skilled enough, they can explode multiple times without any issue, even when hit with fire, but their casings are extremely vulnerable to it. Is that it? Fire power? I mean we have a couple of fire flowers in our inventory, but we don't have enough…wait…THAT'S IT!"

Rei: Himari come over here!

Himari: I hope you have an idea! He looks ready to rumble!

Rei: I do. Time to power up, Classic Style!

*Rei uses Double Dip (-3 FP) and grabs 2 Fire Flowers from her inventory…
and crushes them over Himari and herself!*

Himari: Rei what are you…woah.

*Power Up sound effect*

Rei: Hope this works… Himari go!

Himari: Wait are you… grrrr OK!

KBO- What are you two do- OW!!!

Rei: YES, it worked! Alright King Bob-omb, time for Fire Rei and Himari to teach you a lesson!

Power Up's:
Rei and Himari have used the Fire flowers in order to gain pyrokinetic abilities for the battle! Some items can have secondary effects, depending if they are used normally or as a power up. Make sure to keep your eyes out for these, since they can change the entire course of a battle.

For this fight both Rei and Himari will a +1 to their attacks and theyre hits will deal fire damage. If their HP Drops to below 5, they will lose the powerup.

With that proclamation the battle resumed in earnest. Rei and Himari began to chip away at the Monarchs health while making sure they kept an eye on their HP and FP. Rei using a mix of kicks, punches and her recovered Starlight Kick and Himari hitting the enemy with her wrench, and occasionally using her Poltergust on the Bombs King Bob-Omb created, dealing massive damage. As the battle continued the Kings movements began to slow, until…!

KBO- No…NO! This can't be happening! My defenses are being surpassed? My Fire power outmatch? NOOOOOOOO! GAH!

Rei and Himari: Too bad, because this is happening!

And with a final blow… The Explosive Monarch was defeated!

King Bob-Omb: Gah…so this is it? Well done, Miss Rei and Himari…well done… indeed…

You have defeated King Bob-Omb!
You have obtained:
50 coins
35 EXP
(35/100)

Rei: Its over… we won! All that's left is to catch up with Mario.

Himari: Yeah, let's get out of here, we can wait for them outside if they haven't beat the Koopa Bros. yet.

Chapter 1 Complete!!!

After reaching Toad town and receiving a series of both Good and Bad news, Rei and Co. managed to reach Koopa Bros Fortress in time to warn the Hero Mario, of the trap laid out for him. Thanks to their efforts, and quick-thinking Rei and Himari managed to defeat King bob-Omb and his minions, hopefully securing the Elder Spirit that was said to be held within. "That should be 1 out of 7, just 6 more to go" Rei thought as she left the confines of the now silent fortress with her friend in tow. What kind of enemies will our two heroines face in the future, and can they alongside Mario save the rest of the Star Spirits? Only Time will tell…

Would you like to save your game?

KBO is K.O!

Himari and Rei win!

I can see sound and taste colors… Why Am I doing this? Blegh. Anyway here's chapter 1 of Paper Mario: Tales of Stars and Justice. If your lost, try reading the previous 2 prologues of this "little series" anyway… I hope you like this little excursion. Also yup, New Bosses! Since Rei nearly beat Bowser Before, he was rather ticked and called some extra bodies in order to make sure the Star Spirits stayed where he wants them. The Koopa Brothers got some assistance from King Bob-Omb, a nice little integration since Bob-Ombs were one of the affected races because of their shenanigans. So having The Explosive Monarch as a contingency was simple enough to integrate. I do have an idea for additional bosses for Rei and Co to face while Mario does his own thing. But I am NOT writing anymore PM stuff for a week at least! (This has been cooking (poorly) for a little over 2 weeks!)

I do have some ideas for two (hopefully) shorter omakes, so those will come out…who knows really. I have a couple of things to do. Anyway… thanks for reading!

Next Time, on PLoMJ…

"...Don't you work in a library? In Tokyo?"

He stiffens up, and with the characteristic tone of somebody caught with their pants down, answers. "Librarian convention. Union." And then he stuffs another takoyaki ball into his mouth.

"This is the most frustrating thing, but it's ok. Maybe if I try…"

It's in that moment that you realize that you don't know your sister anymore.

You're 99.9% sure that you're missing something, but just like with Mai, there's a gap where your instincts honed in the Guild would fill in the blanks. Weird.

You'll cross that gap. One day, you'll be family. But for now, focus. Think together. Put your heads together. Sharpen that steel.

It's in that moment that you run towards the danger instead of away from it, in that moment…

It doesn't matter about why either of you are here. It's the least important thing in the world, actually. Because it's the moment to kick. Some. Ass.

CARD SET - PLUNDER PATROLL!

MOVE YOUR BRAIN! WISEMAN, ACTIVE!

Lemme finish the next Kagurabachi chapter and I'll get to it eventually.

Reshuffled: Physical]
What can be broken down can be built back up, and pieced back together. Fix the deck of fate, and you'll be able to break even the Void with your iron fists!
(Or: holy shit, your powers are beginning to punch things as hard as you specifically want them to!)

[Physical has reached its max improvement for now. Once per Week, when a Physical check or attack is failed, Rei may reroll that failed check. (Gain other levels of Reshuffled to gain something else…)]

Not yet I think but if I were to describe it... Hmm. Maybe:

Ones mind is truly a treasure, it constantly learns, it warns you if you are in danger, it can withstand horrors that would cripple lesser men and much more. Learn the content of the deck, and no matter how many times it is shuffled, you will always find a path to victory!
(Or: Hot damn, your powers are letting you cram so much knowledge in your noggin AND you actually remember it!)

[Mental has reached its max improvement for now. Once per Week, when a Mental check or Resistence is failed, Rei may reroll that failed check. (Gain other levels of Reshuffled to gain something else…)]

Omake: What's Your Desire? New
Ok so the Gavv x Roze omake series is gonna need a bit more time for me to get the recipe down right before I start cooking, so in the mean time have an omake set a few timelines to the left of quest canon. The Desire Grand Prix from Kamen Rider Geats honestly makes an incredibly effective setting for a quest. Wonder if anyone can figure out which of the unnamed characters are which, all of them have either appeared in the main story or in one of my omakes.

What's Your Desire?

Monday
Animate Akihabara
12:00pm

(Rei POV)

You took a deep breath as you clocked out of your shift for the day. It was…rough…working like you didn't remember your coworkers being killed by some…weird creatures with strange heads. You're not even entirely sure why you're so worked up about it. You woke up in your bed after all, so it was likely nothing more than a nightmare inspired by some new merch you glimpsed.

'So why does it feel like it wasn't a dream?'

That question kept bouncing around your head as you headed to a noodle shop you'd been meaning to try at the recommendation of a customer who passed through the other day. Reiwa…Seiwa…something like that, you just knew he apparently only ever ordered their Tanuki soba. It took you less than 5 minutes to walk there, and after you ordered you food was ready pretty quick.

As you sat down and began eating, however, you heard someone gently clear their throat from beside your table. Finishing your bite, you looked over and saw a woman in a distinct white and black dress with her black hair coming down over her shoulders and down her back. In her hands was a black and blue box. Putting down your chopsticks, you turned to the woman and asked "Is there something I can help you with?"

"You are Maruki Rei, yes? Congratulations! You have been selected to become a Kamen Rider!" At the exclamation, the woman removed the lid of the box and held it out. You looked inside, and saw a strange, almost rectangular device with a circular slot in the center, and a light blue, small cylindrical item with what looked like the upper half of an Eastern dragon's head on it, with short antlers coming off the top of the head. As you processed this, the only thought going through your mind was

'What?'

Monday
DGP Lounge
1:00pm

You looked around the room for the 3rd time since you had been brought to this side room off what was apparently the lounge for the "Desire Grand Prix", as the lady, who had introduced herself as Tsumuri, had told you. Tsumuri hadn't elaborated on what the Desire Grand Prix actually was, instead saying that the lounge concierge would be by soon to explain further.

The room itself was fairly spartan, having only a couple chairs and a sofa, which you had chosen to sit on, surrounding a coffee table, upon which sat the items that Tsumuri had given you. The rectangular device was called a Desire Driver, and was necessary to transform into a Kamen Rider, while the cylindrical item was apparently an ID Core, but beyond that Tsumuri just said 'the concierge will explain it'.

At that moment, the door opened and let in a man in a white suit. His face was plain, with black hair that has bluish-purple highlights on some of the front bangs. His eyes are a grey color, and he seems slightly uncomfortable, as if his outfit isn't something he's entirely comfortable with. The slight slouch in his posture goes away the moment he sees you, and he walks over to one of the chairs before lowering himself into it. He takes a moment to look you over, before sighing and beginning to speak "I'm assuming Tsumuri didn't tell you much. She's far too professional when it comes to being the Navigator, but that's what makes her the best choice, I guess. Please hold your questions until the end, I have a fair amount to tell you and not much time to do so.

I am Akimitsu Jun, the Concierge for the Desire Grand Prix, or DGP, this season. The Desire Grand Prix is a competition between Kamen Riders, a 'game' with the goal of saving the world from monsters known as Jyamato. The winner of the game has any singular wish granted, resulting in the creation of their desired world. And you, by lucky happenstance, have been chosen to compete in this competition. A rare opportunity, made even more rare by the…unique circumstances the DGP finds itself in."

You're struck speechless. You were going to compete in a competition where the prize was a reality warping wish?! There had to be a catch, there's no way it is that simple. 'Probably tied to why he mentioned unique circumstances'. Fortunately, it seems Akimitsu isn't done with his explanation, as his eyes harden and he leans in with his elbows on his knees.

"The Desire Grand Prix usually consists of multiple rounds, each with a specific objective that must be completed. Usually the Rider with the least points or who is in last place is eliminated at the end of each round. The exception is the first round, which usually starts with a group of roughly 2 dozen Riders and gets whittled down to around 6, which is how many Riders passed this time. You are joining the DGP after the first round has already been played, as there are not enough Riders left for things to be considered 'exciting' by the management. This season of the DGP was an…experiment, requested and authorized by the DGP Administrator. As such, all Riders compete in every round as teams of two, with BOTH of the winning team's wishes being granted. With only 6 Riders remaining, that means there are three teams, and so it was decided that new Riders would be brought in to make this DGP last longer.

I won't get into the specifics of why you were chosen, as the Administrator chose you to compete. Apparently he and the current Game Master had a debate about how many new Riders should be brought in, but they eventually settled on three new Riders. It's hopefully obvious that would pose a problem with the condition that all Riders must be on a team of two. That's because there are even more special circumstances for your situation.

You see, the Administrator recently uncovered information that some kind of organization is seeking to usurp control of the DGP from its current management. It was determined that the most likely method they would achieve this is by having some of their own agents become Kamen Riders and win the DGP. We believe two of those Agents are competing in this season, and so it was agreed that one of the new teams would consist of a normal Rider, and a volunteer from the DGP staff. That's your team, Maruki Rei, and unfortunately due to rules you won't meet your partner until the second round begins.

You're free to decline, and the Administrator will pick someone else to compete. But you will forfeit any right to participate in the future, even by random chance. Winning this competition can allow you to have practically any wish imaginable granted, but you would be risking your life for that wish. The DGP can get pretty brutal, so I would put serious thought into if your desire is truly worth putting everything on the line for. If you decide it is worth it, however…"

Akimitsu snaps his fingers, and suddenly a small pad and a pen appears on the table next to the Desire Driver.

"Simply write down your wish on the Desire Pad, and you will be entered into the DGP as a contestant, as 'Kamen Rider Atry'."

You take a moment to think it over, Akimitsu watching silently. You would have liked to say it was a tough choice, but you knew the moment he said "any wish" that you would be accepting the offer. You had something worth risking your life for, a wish you'd give anything to see fulfilled. So you pick up the pad and pen and write down your desire.

A Few Moments Later

Akimitsu led you through a pair of doors into the main part of the lounge, and as you enter you see Tsumuri leading two others through another door at the same time. They're a man and a woman, and from the similar appearances you suspect they are siblings. The only really distinct part of either of their appearances is the moon hairclip in the woman's hair. Each of them has a Desire Driver on their waist, the man has a golden-yellow ID Core with what you think is a bird of some kind and the woman has a cyan ID Core with what looks like a wolf on it. The 6 people already in the lounge all look over, and you can see confusion on some of their faces.

From what you can see, the main lounge has an upper section and lower section. The upper section has a bar with a set of bar stools on one side, and the lower section has a pair of red-cushioned couches set in a loose S shape. The 6 other contestants are spread around the lounge, in pairs that are pretty obviously their teams. A pair of women, one with a punk vibe and the other wearing a white blouse, both with greyish-black hair, are sitting at the bar, apparently talking before you walked in. Their ID Cores are two bears with stars over one of the eyes, with an orange one for the punk and white for the other. A woman with dyed red hair wearing a leather jacket is laying down on one of the couches while an imposing man in shades, a suit, and a baseball cap is standing behind her. Their ID Cores are a yellow cat and a light green raccoon, respectively. The last pair consist of a brown-haired man who is leaning back on the other couch, his face turned towards the ceiling, and the lower half of his face obscured by a bandanna with a skull pattern on it, while his teammate is a dark-haired woman who seems to be spinning something between her fingers…is that a BULLET?! Their ID cores are a purple bull and a white fox, respectively.

Akimitsu begins explaining about why three new players are being added to the DGP, and you only half listen, your mind going back to the wish you made. To the promise you made yourself, and would give even your life if it meant fulfilling.

"No matter what, I will win this. I will find you, Akemi."

Well thats an interesting read... several steps to the left is correct.
Also ouch so much for Mai and Co...
This seems more in line with the "normal" world option. (I think) No idea who amyone is except Rei and Jun, but 12 Riders all with animal motives? Chinese Zodiac is an interesting base for power sets.
Also Rei got the dragon? Neat.
Honestly reminds me of an anime I watched years ago with the same premise, except without Kamen Riders.

12 people all competing for a wish given by a misterious (and more than likely malicious organization).
It followed each Zodiac as they fought and died until eventually..umm spoilers...

The rat won, because his ability was to make a 100 different timelines at once, in which he played the game a 100 different times, making friends with each participant, trying different strategies, until he got the timeline in which he was the victor. But since the org didnt know HOW the hell he won, they basically kept killing him until he explained his powers, and then gave him his wish...but since he is kinda Shikamaru coded he didnt know what to wish for, so he began thinking and kept finding counterpoints for everything he could wish for, until he settled for having the memories of the game erased from his memory.

Don't worry, Mai and Co were all fine once the world was reset as part of the wish! They didn't even remember a thing! That's what the first section was about! (It's not stated, but it's been weeks since that incident, the previous DGP concluded in that round)

And it's NOT 12 Riders based on the Chinese Zodiac. When I said "starts at roughly two dozen", I MEANT IT. We have everthing from Tigers, to Sheep/Rams/Goats, to Sparrows, to Pandas, to (I think) even Gazelles. The Dragon is actually one I DON'T believe shows up in the actual show. Every other ID Core? Is in the show proper, even if one is tied to only a name we seen on a screen...

Well, the ORIGINAL DGP management was certainly shady. Luckily the new Administrator decided to run things with less underhanded tactics and the like. (He may or may not be that timeline's equivalent of the show's eponymous Rider).

The wish itself, though? It doesn't even get the monkey paw treatment. You get what you desired, no strings attached.

Ok, so first off, I loved the set up. Definitely in character for Jun to monologue on for so long.

As for characters who appeared in that last scene… I recognized Kazuki and Tsukiko as the first two, Dokuro and Michiko (Senkesha) are very obvious (he would totally hit the staring at the ceiling pose btw), and it took me a while but Shuten and Kurahime are the second group.

+50 EXP, +5 EP.👍

Congrats on naming them correctly! Now who's at the bar? (I forgot one of them had glasses, going by their Personae Dramatis)

Also I felt Dokuro and Senkesha having their ID Cores be of the Riders that work best with the Zombie and Magnum Buckles respectively was fitting. Also makes them an actual nightmare to fight against.

Oh! And I had the idea that the Atry ID Core worked best with an original Buckle I have tentatively named "Gargoyle", which has a stone theme and gives wings and a spear when on the top half of the Rider suit, a prehensile tail and claws that allow for running on walls on the lower half of the Rider suit.

Apologies that no chapter has been coming out. I meant to have it done, but my participation in this very site's Secret Santa contest and a lot of surprise assignments meant that I'm being slowed down. Chapter out by Tuesday, Thursday at max. I'll do my best, you won't wanna miss it.

Kirata's Place, Kyoto

You are Himari Kuromi, and this is the first time you've been over to your sister's place. Well, you're technically just coming along with Rei, but she's doing her own thing.

"Bye! I'm just gonna be checking out the Kyoto sights!" Rei yells, before she slams the door shut. As she leaves, you hear some thudding, before a whoosh that's undoubtedly Rei using her Rider powers to skip an elevator trip down. Kirata looks at you, clearly a tiny bit exasperated (you still haven't heard much about what happened Wednesday with her and Rei) before closing the portal she conjured up with a snap of her fingers and sitting down at a desk. You follow her, keeping a close eye on how her wooden cane seems to shrink into a wand that she can stuff into her pocket. Cool.

"Alright, so what did you want me to help you with?" she asks, casually pulling out a few dozen various tools from the desk's drawer. There's a microscope, a magnifying glass, a thermometer… and at least five different tools you don't know the name of. Not wanting to be one upped, you pull out the thing that you wanted Kirata to look at— a piece of armor from the Archfiend Shade that invaded Akemi's home. It's only the chestplate, but the size difference between you and it means that the metal slab is bigger than your torso. You're only able to hold it up for a few seconds before dropping it back down onto the floor with a thud.

"I need you to help me see if I can make anything with this. It used to be a part of a Shade, and it didn't disappear after Akemi chopped him in half. Whenever I try to bend it with my technopathy, it just snaps back into place. Maybe it'll help me nullify those Void Contracts?"

Kirata stares at what you've brought her for a second, before readjusting her glasses (they gleam brightly for a second, making you glad you still have your sunglasses on) and grinning toothily. "Well, of course I'll help with something like that. Just gimme a second…"

Kyoto Streets, nowhere in particular

You are Rei Maruki, and… nope, not much interesting is happening right now. You look around for any signs of trouble, making sure to pocket your motorcycle using the magic pouch Jun gave you. Nothing. Down the market stalls to the north? Nothing. Over in the west, where there are a few business centers? You can't hear any explosions or see any technicolor lights, so it's pretty reasonable to assume that it's nothing. The only thing interesting about the streets of Kyoto today is the light, almost imperceptible layer of snow, just a few flakes falling down from the sky at a time.

Aw, so it's just a normal day? That sucks.

>Seconded.

Well, it's nice to clear your head at least, especially considering that there was some Umbra activity sighted in Eiganjo. Dear lord, it's going to be a pain to get through customs with your gun, and that isn't even considering the inevitable rich people bullshit you're going to have to deal with. Hopefully Fuji's got things covered down in Shonai, because you're not sure which one's worse: fighting sharks or capitalism.

>It's capitalism. Capitalism's worse. It's going to take all of my power not to throw all of us over a ledge when we get there. On that note have I mentioned today how much I fucking hate the rich-

What brought that on? You whack the right side of your head, silently asking for the voices in there to be quiet for once. With a sigh, you turn down the corner, and take out your phone to buy something from one of the nearby street food vendors. Hopefully they take touchless pay- you left your wallet at home today. You just manage to decide on the takoyaki when you see someone standing by the other side of the cart.

d10=3. Encounter - Kazuo Hikaru

It's a man wearing a brown coat, with long flowing hair, but not long enough to where you'd think that he looks like a girl. He's got a thin metallic pair of glasses on and- hey, wait a minute!

"You're that guy from the library who helped me!" You can't help but blurt out.

As if on cue, Kazuo Hikaru turns around, a cardboard tray of takoyaki in one hand and some cheap chopsticks in the other. He blinks in surprise, before putting the chopsticks down and swallowing his food. "Oh, you're the kid I met last week. Mai kept talking about you, y'know."

[WHO?]

Wait, remind me how we know this guy, again?

It was… last week (which seems like ages ago) when we went on that trip to the library with Himari to learn about Awakening Day. -Kizaru

Yup. You silently nod, before ordering your own tray of takoyaki using the holographic touchscreen the cook's set up. As you do, you spare a glance to look at Hikaru. He may have seemed a bit older back when he was helping you out with the books, but now that you're seeing him on the street, he's somewhere around 25, maybe late twenties at most. Maybe. Or maybe he just has a good skincare routine, ages are still hard for you. "Really? It's nice to hear that I still have a place at Sunshine. How've you been doing? Any reason you're here in Kyoto today?"

He sighs and rolls his eyes. You don't remember him being this sassy. "Ugh. Business trip, nothing fun. I'm probably not even going to see anything interesting."

Hold up a minute. That doesn't line up with what he told us that he does.

"...Don't you work in a library? In Tokyo?"

Hikaru stiffens up, and with the characteristic tone of somebody caught with their pants down, answers. "Librarian convention. Union." And then he stuffs another takoyaki ball into his mouth. You try one of your own as the chef hands your tray to you. The octopus dumplings are nice, but nothing special. Maybe you should bring some over for Himari, though…

For a few more seconds, you and Hikaru just stand there next to each other, both of you shuffling over to a corner in order to not get in the way of the line. Eventually, you look up at him, and try to scrutinize the man. As you alternate between looking into his eyes and staring out into the street with him, you find… nothing. He's just a guy eating takoyaki. You're 99.9% sure that you're missing something, but just like with Mai, there's a gap where your instincts honed in the Guild would fill in the blanks. Weird.

Did you expect him to be like, a youkai?

It's pronounced "yokai", Goldenhair. And no, you didn't. It's just another mystery to figure out, you suppose. But to solve a mystery…

You gotta find some evidence. "So, how's Kyoto? What's the reason that you're just messing around and getting street food before this important library meeting?"

He finishes up his dumplings, before tossing them away into the trash. He carefully removes his glasses from his face, and puts them onto his jacket's collar. "It's fine. A bit cold. And as for why I'm here, honestly… It's kind of nice. It's been a while since I've been able to chill, y'know?"

What is he talking about? "What do you mean?"

His eyes are closed now. The snow falls down all around you, gentle and calming. "It's complicated, really. I guess I was just tired of going at 100%. The job I'm on is my reason to get up in the morning but at the same time… Y'know, I've gotta talk to a hundred people each day, it gets tiring after a while. With this trip to Kyoto I can just chill for a second. Even if I'm only doing nothing, I can still be happy, even if it's nagging at me a bit. My reason for doing something doesn't always have to be because of my work."

>Good rest is good for the soul.

You nod, eating the last of your takoyaki and tossing that away. You're genuinely curious right now, though. "So are you… happier when you're doing your job? Or are you not happy unless you're helping others? Explain, I kinda want to see your side of things."

"It's not really helping others that hurts me, really. It's sort of the natural toll that comes with exerting yourself that hurts me. I'd give up a lot of myself for others in a heartbeat but…"

He waves his fingers around, opens his mouth, and then just sighs and shrugs. His eyes stay closed, but he vaguely gestures at you as if they aren't closed at all.

>…Is the eyes closed shtick some sort of family thing?

"Agh, the words aren't wording today. I just need a break, since my work life is a lot to deal with. Basically, I can't spend every day saving others, y'know. Sometimes it's ok to just put your brain in low gear. No shame in that."

"Yeah, I think I get what you're trying to say." you respond, "Heck, you probably have it worse off than me, considering how little funding libraries get. I still think that it's important to be productive, but you're right- it isn't really all that plausible to go 100% all the time."

To be honest, you barely even have enough time to consider what he's saying. There's so many weird things about this conversation that you can't even pick out one to focus on. The fuck…? You're about to ask him about that last thing that he said when-

BOOM!!!

Something explodes in the distance, right down the bridge on your left. Hikaru gets in front of you with an arm, but you push him aside and squint. Over in the distance, there's… inky purple smoke? Wait a minute, you recognize that shade of purple. And there's no festivals going on in the area right now.

Oh. Oh no. Of course this has to happen on the one day you want to look around Kyoto. You didn't even get to see that one art exhibit! You run forward, but Hikaru holds you back. His eyes fly open, and he shoves his glasses into his pocket. On his face is a frantic expression tinged with a hint of something you can't quite read. "Shit- stay back. You gotta go!"

You take his arm off of your shoulder one more time, and shoot him with a look of your own. "No, I can't! I have to--"

Wait, don't reveal your powers! -Kizaru

Your jaw snaps shut, thanks Kizaru. "Get over there!" you blurt out, grasping for some explanation.

Hikaru steps to the side to dodge a civilian running away and groans. "Well, I need to get over there as well. But you've gotta move! My break time's over, now I need to do my job!"

"You're a librarian!"

"Well I lied, and I've got a good reason to be over there! Seriously, what reason do you have to go over to that rampant Glyph?!"

Kirata and Himari are in the area. You can't let them get hurt by whatever's going on. That's enough of a reason.

[Social Check: 50/75/100]

You try your best to fiercely stare into his dark eyes, and try and make it as clear as possible what you're going to do, with or without him. He blinks in surprise, and then quickly shakes his head. "Ok, fine… if you really want to, then I'll follow your lead. We've had some time to rest, now we gotta get our brains into high gear!"

Was that a catchphrase he just said?

You take his arm this time, and start running. He leans down to the left, and in that moment, you silently follow him down an alleyway. He takes a deep breath, and with a touch of his finger, a belt— a Driver? Those things that Takeshi said channel Rider powers. One of those appears on his waist, and so does yours. Ah, that must be why he was scouting out this area. Anti-Void measures.

Focus back on the running now, Rei. C'mon!

You do just that. And it's in that moment that you're both running towards the danger instead of away from it, in that moment…

The reason why either of you are here melts away, it doesn't matter. It's the least important thing in the world, actually. Because it's the right moment to kick. Some. Ass. Hikaru taps a finger to his head, while you slam in the one card you haven't used in public yet.

CARD SET - PLUNDER PATROLL!

MOVE YOUR BRAIN! WISEMAN, ACTIVE!

"Henshin!"

2:41 PM
Kirata's Place, Kyoto

You are Kirata Kuromi and— man, how much longer is this work going to take? You swap between at least three different spells, trying to analyze the material that you're working with. Nothing. Melting point? Nothing. Freezing point, atomic/metallic composition? Nothing. And there's no trace of Void energy, none of the clogging and suffocating sensation characteristic of that sort of magic.

You look over at Himari. She's quickly shifting between searching up something on her phone and looking at a chunk of metal she managed to pull out of the armor underneath a microscope. She squints a bit, and then pulls back and readjusts her sunglasses. Something to note, maybe you can get her a pair of clear prescription glasses for her birthday in April. Something to do after the meeting on Saturday, the spell study on Sunday, and also the government check in on both the 14th…

Himari sighs, before pulling out a small sketchbook and scribbling down something with a pen. "It doesn't look like we can use this, no contact with the Void anymore. Still though, it's a really durable material, super dense as well. Maybe if we use magic on it, it'll have an effect? Help me out here, sis."

You shrug, and reach into your pocket to grab a metallic disc, an experiment to see how little space you could fit a Glyph+Runes for a portable spell on. Most of your spells are integrated into your system by now, but those take a higher prana cost from you. Best to save that just in case tomorrow doesn't end up being a good health day. You put it on top of your right hand, and flick your index finger against your right.

THUNK!

The wind blade bounces off, going from a possibly-lethal pressure cutter to a gust of wind that almost knocks off both of your glasses. Himari pinches her nose to stop the incoming migraine, and then leans in. "Ok, so anti magic properties. I can work with that."

"Do you need any help?"

She shakes her head and scoots away from you a bit. "Nope. If it wouldn't be too hard though, can you call up Kisei Sora? I think I could integrate this hunk of junk into some sort of Kamen Rider armor for its anti-magic and anti-Void properties."

Your eyes widen in surprise. "F— for Rei?"

She scribbles down something else with her pencil, examining each curve and bend of the chestplate. "No, she's got a whole ass arsenal of tricks; she'll probably find a spirit in that deck of cards of hers with anti-magic soon enough. I'm thinking about making something personal, y'know? I'm falling behind Akemi and Rei fast, and I only managed to contribute to that fight in Akemi's house because I got lucky with my assumptions. It won't happen again when I go against my Big Bro and Sis…"

She trails off, seeing your expression. "...my seniors from the Assassin's Guild. They forced me to call them that, it was awful."

She's lying. But you (try your best to) pay it no mind, as you tap a number on your phone and slide it over to Himari.

[Mental: Progress (50/100)]

(Explosion doesn't trigger since EP was used, neither of the siblings' perks activate for this.)

So many years ago…

"Sis, can we play together?"

"No, I'm having a bad health day. My legs- agh- aren't really working, and neither are my arms for once. It's uh, hurting really bad. Give me a few minutes and I'll be able to work on that puzzle we were doing yesterday. Until then, why don't you play with the nanny?"

"Those ladies? They come and go so fast! I want to play with you, you stay!"

"Geez, where's mom and dad when you need them to not be away for once? It'll be fine, Himari. Besides, can't you do it on your own?"

"I can't! It's really hard, like 200… 300… 10,000 pieces or something! You're always there to help me out with those things."

"It's only 350, and we both know you're smarter than that. Don't give up, you can do it!"

"...But I don't really know how to keep doing it though."

"You'll learn from me one day. That's a promise."

"Alright, looks like I'm done. Kirata, you good?"

You blink in surprise as you look at Himari, who has a few pieces of paper on top of the table, filled with multiple vague sketches of knight-like figures in different full helmets. They're surprisingly well-detailed, with clean lines and anatomy- you honestly expected Himari to not be able to draw in such a realistic manner. She slides your phone back to you, and looks at you once again. "I called Sora. They offered to help me reverse-engineer one of your mentor's Driver thingies, though it might take a while."

With a careful hand, you pick up one of the design papers that Himari made. "Where did you learn how to draw so well?"

She sighs, types something into her own phone, and erases a line or two from one of her sketches. "I had time to learn a lot of skills. Drawing sketches is one of my better ones, probably a bit worse than my multilingualism though. It really wasn't that hard, it just took time and grit. I picked it up eventually."

She turns back to the table, and pulls away the papers in order to look at the armor again. It shines with the reflected light of your home, but still doesn't seem to be giving out any answers. "Analyzing this is the most frustrating thing I've done all week, but it's ok. Gotta keep going. Maybe if I try…"

It's at that moment that you realize that you don't know your sister anymore. The streak of gray in her hair says it as clearly as day— she's grown up without you.

2:47 PM
Kyoto Streets, in chaos

As you and Hikaru jump out of the alleyway back into the main streets, you notice immediately what caused the explosion of Void energy. On the asphalt, there's a huge Void glyph glowing purple, and there's some small Shades emerging from the floor. Purple-robed skeletons, slowly emerging and groaning. You look over at Hikaru. He's dressed up in his own Kamen Rider suit, colored white on the outside layer and black near the center. Concentric rings line his arms, and the circular goggles on top of his helmeted head somewhat remind you of Himari's transformation. The white hood's a bit different from Himari's style though. He hits the floor as you do, and scans the battlefield, before putting a hand to his head in frustration. "Agh, it looks like there's a… 95.1% another one of those Void Glyphs manifested naturally. Listen, I don't know your whole deal, but could you help me out here?"

What is it with this lad and his fancy numbers?

You look around, pirate garb at the ready. "Wait, those things can manifest naturally?"

"37 percent of the time they do that instead of Umbra actively provoking them if something bad happens, and…" he taps his wrist, and a holographic screen pops out for a second. He scans it for a second, before taking off his hood and stretching his arms. "Bus crash happened somewhere here on Wednesday. I'll give it an 83.6% chance that's what caused the Void to approach here. I was meaning to check it out, but then I got distracted by that talk with you. And speaking of, on your left."

You barely manage to duck as one skeleton almost takes your head off with a swing of it's own arm bone that it's using as a club. Hikaru simply walks up to it and places a hand on its head. After a second or two of silence, he shoves it with his shoulder and the skeleton explodes into a swath of bones. As you gawk at him, he just looks at you and shrugs. "Psychic force. Just a natural thing I can do. Now c'mon, help me out."

What are you waiting for, lass? He doesn't move very fast! Help him!

You run to help, dodging a crate of goods that Hikaru grabs by gesturing at it (?!) and launches behind you, turning another group of skeletons into something closer to a group of fallen bowling pins. As he does that, you jump over his head and slam a fist into more skeletons trying to sneak up on him, before firing into the horde with your pistol. Hikaru grabs another skeleton and psychically slams it into its fellow skeletons, before grabbing a falling skull out of the air with an invisible hand and launching it at a wall. The makeshift projectile ricochets off a metal wall into the ribs of an unlucky skeleton servant, causing even more damage.

[Physical Check; DC 60/80/100]
[68+30+15(Plunder Patroll)=113. Great success!

As another horde begins to approach, you jump up and kick one of the skeletons into smithereens with a grunt. Another one attempts to grab onto your back, but you bend down and slam it into one of its partners. You look over at Hikaru, who pushes another horde away with the telekinesis he's been demonstrating. He looks back at you, the white LED eyes of his helmet gleaming as he speaks. "These seem like Lesser Shades, they're low level Void monsters, not always skeletons. Clearly not very durable either— on your right! They mostly just cause property damage and act annoying, most people can outrun them."

Clearly very annoying, though.

You empty another round of your pistol's ammo into the skeleton he warned you about, before kicking another Lesser Shade attempting to fruitlessly tackle you. "Agh, that's annoying. Seems they're focused on us, right?"

He roundhouse kicks one, before flicking his right hand and weightlessly flinging both you and him through the air. Your legs kick out for a second, but you manage to gracefully land on the ground and fire a few extra rounds. "Yup! And I've managed to disable the Void Glyph before anything worse could come out. Besides, the situation is one I've managed to engineer in our favor. Check it out!" he says, before flinging a rock into the horde, piercing a Lesser Shade's skull.

You look around, and you suddenly see it. He's moved both of you into a corner of the market with multiple entrances, but the skeletons are all focused on you and moving into a dead end. Aside from that, it looks like all the merchants here have moved away, and there's only some metallic food trucks, so…

"I should be able to use something more explosive now. This was all part of your calculations or something like that, I assume?"

You can just hear him smirking as he pulls down his goggles onto his helmet's eye sockets. They glow with a green-blue light, and his hands pulse with power of the same color. "Yes on both. My enhanced intelligence allows me to maintain battlefield control, memorize hundreds of different data points, and file taxes better. Don't go too hard on the food trucks though, those cost money! Just cover me!"

"With pleasure!"

With a smile on your face, you dash into the skeleton horde, alternating between crushing skulls with your armored hands and pistol fire, as Hikaru ricochets yet another head off of the metal food trucks, covering your blind spots.

Hm. He's a pretty good crewmate, isn't he?

Both you and him work together— as he hits from afar, you zoom across the battlefield to quickly off the hordes approaching the spots he isn't facing, making sure to sprinkle in some careful pistol shots. If this is the average WRL operative, then you have to say that you're not underwhelmed by Takeshi's teaching at all!

You have achieved Relationship Level 1 (More Impressive Than He Seemed) with Kazuo Hikaru.
The actions (Introductions: Psyche and Wiseman) and (Try to socialize with Aoi and Hikaru) have been merged. Next week, you may take that sidequest as one Minor Action.

3:02 PM
Kirata's Place, Kyoto

You are Himari Kuromi, and you're almost done putting into place some preparations for what you want to be doing. Talking with Sora was cool, but after a while the novelty of talking with yet another Archmage wore off and now you were just talking to yet another business partner with materials. You take another look at the blueprints they sent you, swiping to another tab on your phone. Whoever this Yamaguchi guy was, he was clearly a smartass.

Seriously, some of these properties… "integrated hammerspace"... "Will to prana conversion"… and all that isn't even accounting for how you're going to make sure this armor doesn't constantly pinch you, or worse, be fused together into a casket for you. Shit, no wonder it's hard to just make Kamen Riders. Each project, each Driver, would likely have to be personalized to the user. And even if you made a system of Drivers that worked with the same power sources and, god forbid, theming, there would still be so much testing required to make sure so much magical and electrical energy doesn't immediately kill any prospective users. Magical girls wouldn't fare much better. From what Purrson informed you when you were at home, their transformations are some kind of reaction between their high Will and their heightened magic from whatever sources, so it's possible that them using this kind of thing would immediately electrocute them.

And that just raises even more questions about how Drivers that comfortably work for others are still appearing and found around Tokyo. Yes, some of them are magic based, but Yamaguchi is still gone like the wind, so who…?

Your thoughts go into your sketches, with your lines becoming a bit rougher and wider as you show them to Kirata. She glances at your latest design, and shakes her head. "No, you'll need to move the chestplate up a bit, people are probably going to aim for your head. Maybe try…"

As you and her work together, there's a sort of comforting rhythm to how it goes. You put forth and sketch some ideas, while Kirata shoots them down.

"I could use the nanobots that come with my Void contract to hold the arms together?"

"No, that's too risky. Maybe try metallic fibers, I know a guy…"

"I think I'd also want wings here, large, silver. As a homage to someone I knew. Besides, I'm already able to hover while transformed, but not too much higher than that. I just need a bit of extra lift."

"…I don't think we'd be able to do a full wingspan, but maybe some hard light constructs? Wait, what color do you want this to be?"

"Red, yellow; silver. Mainly silver? I think that's my color."

"The old lady color?!"

You can't help but burst out laughing, as your sister pats you on the back appreciatively. And as she does, you can't help but think about how long it's been. Ever since that day, you've never actually put any thought into your sister, especially considering that…

"Until the ends of the sea, alright? That's how far we'll go to find each other."

Your other sister's voice resounds in your head, and sketching up some more designs is the only way you're able to hold back a shudder. While your Assassin's Guild partners were as close to you as family (and so are Rei, Akemi, and Jun, now that you think about it) there's a gap of sorts between you and Kirata.

Maybe it's in the fact that it's been so long since you've spent some proper time together, or maybe it's in the fact that it's just… been a while since you actually took some time to sit down and talk to someone else. Maybe when you signed that Void Contract, you opened up the gap between you and everyone else, and it's only starting to close now. You were closer to a program than a person, more of a knife than a human. You've smiled more, really smiled, in the past few weeks than in the past few years. Today is no exception to that.

You'll cross that gap. One day, you'll be family again. For now, all you need to do is keep sketching and focus. Think together. Put your heads together. If you're a weapon, become a blade that can protect those you love. Sharpen that steel.

As you show Kirata your final diagrams and her eyes widen in wonder as she gives you a few last pieces of advice, you can't help but feel a surge of pride in your chest. This might actually work!

-Pt. 1 of Himari's project, [A New Suit For A New Me] has been completed!
-Pt. 2 has been unlocked: [Technical, Progress (50/300)]

As you put away your sketches and notes, you blink. Wait, who said that one part about the steel…?

Rei stumbles into the apartment, types something into her phone with one hand, and then flops into the couch exhausted. But she fades into the background of your mind as you turn to Kirata. She'll be fine. (Hopefully.)

Kirata sighs a deep breath of relief, and looks into your empty eyes. "Ok, that's enough. We've got the design ready, I'll see if I can get it to Sora. Though, I need one thing. Are you going to use this to replace your other transformation, or something else?"

You put your hands "I think that I want to make…"

[ ] An Alt-Form
-Himari will gain a Form Change mechanic, where she can choose between her Magical Girl and Kamen Rider forms at the beginning of combat and swap her moveset once per combat as a free action.
-This will split her Code and Technopathy moveset into those forms respectively, but both of those skill sets will gain buffs. (Longer duration and bigger damage respectively.)

[ ] A Secret Weapon
-Himari will gain her own [Awakening] meter and passive, likely based on how many debuffs she inflicts. When she's gained enough Awakening from her Code moves, she can temporarily power up into her (still-unnamed) Kamen Rider form and use enhanced Technopathy attacks. Her Code moves will gain an extension on their debuff time to account for this.

[ ] A Power Boost
-Himari will ditch the Magical Girl form and just swap to mainly being a Kamen Rider, focusing mostly on using the Code attacks as a side to her main offensive Technopathy, Adaptive Firewall, and Assassin's Guild techniques, acting as a tank.
-She will keep the Magical Girl form as a side thing, but it won't be focused on as much unless she gets knocked back into it.

Author's Note:
Next update will likely be a bit slower, since I'm participating in the Secret Santa Short Story contest, and my prompt is… very good. Let's just say that.

As for some extra notes, just wanted to say that:
  • All Introduction missions have been moved to Minor Actions. Some things have been added as Major Actions.
  • Yes, Hikaru's a psychic, more explanation on that forthcoming. Yes, his Rider name is Kamen Rider Wiseman. Yes, that 100 Social roll was him partially reading your mind. Emphasis on partially.
  • I feel likeHimari section was a bit awkward, but sometimes you just gotta hit post and be done with it. Sorry about that.
  • Next update will likely be on a weekend, since it'll be a multi-part thing with multiple updates per day. Long story, don't ask.

I shit you not, this is the first time I've seen this chapter be put through a word counter. Of course it took longer! IT'S 5K WORDS?!

This chapter brought to you by sibling angst and loneliness. It's the flavor of the season!

Yay new chapter! Also huh we met a new KR, and one of the reccomended ones no less. Also hes Psychic!?
That just opened a big can of worms. Great chapter as always Kermie. Ill probably vote later, but I am liking those Himari upgrades.

Well shit no kidding, thats a lot of words.
Closest to that is the Welcome chapter with 5.1 k I think. (If the statistics is right). This is the longest chapter in the quest now.

Well other than the massive original character creation in the Side stories which over 7K words. But I think thats a technicallity if anything.

Voting is open for the next 1 day, 19 hours
