Ok, I'll edit it to change that. But my major point still stands. Why the need to git gud so fast?
For Louise, personally? A desire to prove herself, an inferiority complex, a desire to match her family's (perceived or real) expectations of ability, etc. Lots of possibilities. Maybe she just wants to do magic, like she's been unable to do for her whole life.

For the system mechanic? That's how Gamers work. They can literally pick up a book and - without actually, y'know, reading it - immediately learn how to diagnose injuries, how to provide emergency medical care, how to fight with a sword very large knife, how to cast a spell, how to forge things, alchemy, and even more. And they improve those skills at an absolutely insane rate, and can engage in completely fucking nuts training to improve without any noteworthy risk of lasting injury.
With the right skills (Physical Endurance or whatever and a healing skill), getting a friend to beat you half (or more!) to death for hours on end is a completely viable training method.

Funny. So she just wants to beat her mother's score/record? How disappointing. She really really needs to raise that WIS stat. She's already got Tabitha on her and if Ozzy ever bothers to look into her "magic" more deeply, he'll find out what's up too.
I wouldn't describe it as a foolish goal, people naturally want to emulate their role models. It's just that Louise's role model is a living legend national hero army-slayer supermage, so she's got a lot of ground to make up.

Plus I think anyone would be in a rush to improve after spending so much time as a complete dissapointment to their family. She does have the genetic potential for insane power, so its not too much of a stretch for her to progress quickly now that she can actually practice.

Tabitha hasn't seen any conclusive evidence that Louise isn't using Halkegenian magic even after observing her for most of the day, all she saw was someone practicing spells and reading notes. And doing embarrasing happy dances for no particular reason.

This is fun.

Though: 1) yes, Louise also gains affinity by leveling spells, and 2) two spells that are basically the same get merged automatically by The Gamer, so Louise might get to Line by learning as many spells as possible (30 is already quite a lot), but not much further.

I guess. My problem is that Han Jee-Han had the problem of the Abyss trying to kill/capture him to worry about. What does she really have to worry about now, that is going to cost her her life?

Well yes. But they improve by levels. Not gaining 10 points of affinity for just learning the skill which is my beef here. She could learn a thousand spells for her fire affinity and the affinity would be so high, but all of her spells would be level one. Also, the further you level a spell, the more you learn the little tricks and stuff about it and your understanding and skill of the spell is going to improve. And by understanding and knowing more, you train your affinity to the element. Here, the OP is saying that she can level the affinity, but all it does is unlock the next rank of spells. She has no clue about how useful her spells are or what they could become or what bonuses she could get, etc... All she's got is a high affinity and 1000 level one weak spells to show for it. Check TGWP and the Headway Quests and the like and you'll get an idea of what I'm talking about.

It's not a totally foolish goal, but I consider her goal to be disappointing considering that she's now got all the time in the world. Plus, it's just not feasible for her to try and learn and then remember and use thousands of different spells.

Eh, I guess. I'm just pretty cautious by nature and I think Zero, after hearing about what the kids where complaining about, should slow it down so as to not draw even more attention and thereby cause problems for her until she's ready. And she's not ready yet.

And you're forgetting that Tabitha saw Louise destroy the book about knife/sword fighting. So she knows something is up.

More please~! I just discovered (and read all of this) this afternoon, and I need more...!

I also desperately want her to say 'Status' and have her screen pop up.

Tristain being invaded (multiple wars in the near future), an insane asshole with magic nukes and supergolems, the pope trying to start another crusade and/or commit genocide, and the windstone apocalypse off the top of my head.

JeeHan spent quite a bit of time grinding for no reason before the dark beasts were introduced, so I don't see how this is a problem anyway.

None of which really affect her now that she doesn't have Saito and her Void magic isn't known. Besides, where did you get all that? To my knowledge, the author of FoZ died in the middle of writing the war between Halkegenia and Germania(or whatever fucking country it was) and the manga stopped there.

Tristain is still going to be invaded regardless of whether or not she has known Void magic.

Also see edited statement above about JeeHan grinding in the early chapters of The Gamer.

I got my information by reading all the LN translations avaliable on Baka Tsuki plus the Back to Basics thread on SB.

The windstone apocalypse is the reason why Pope Mcdongcoptor wants to reclaim the Elf's lands for humanity; they are the only place that will be safe when everything else launches into the sky like Albion.

IIRC the windstone problem is well beyond what anyone, even Gamer!Louise, can solve so they kinda have to either invade or convince the Elves, hated enemies for millennia, to let all of humanity stay in their borders for the next couple centuries.

For me it makes sense because the more spells she know the more applications she discovers about an affinity. Then by training these spells she understands how they works and what more can be done with them.

So yeah, learn a thousand spells for Fire and unlock triangle/square level of the affinity makes sense for me, since after learning all those spells using, switching, combining and so on those spells would make her very high level in the affinity already.
And you're forgetting that Tabitha saw Louise destroy the book about knife/sword fighting. So she knows something is up.
Louise doesn't know about that.

Eh, I guess. I'm just pretty cautious by nature and I think Zero, after hearing about what the kids where complaining about, should slow it down so as to not draw even more attention and thereby cause problems for her until she's ready. And she's not ready yet.
That's just it. Louise is the type to do the opposite.

People make fun of her after she succeeds? Train to get better.

They still make fun of her and don't believe she really succeeded? Train harder and prove them wrong.

Which will of course increase the conflict not slow it down, but that's how Louise is like.

I mean really, "cautious"? Her princess asks her to lend a helping hand, she jumping into a country in civil war to get a bloody piece of paper, and not even destroy the goddamn letter that might cost her country the support of Germania, no she travels back to the princess to deliver the letter by hand due to its sentimental value.

Caution isn't something I believe Louise even understands.

No. You're part right and part wrong. He had gained a level immediately at the start of the manga a couple of days ago after completing a few quests for his mother and immediately put all of his points into strength. He also learned a little about gaining stats through physical fitness and doing homework, but nothing else. He only gained 1 stat point in intelligence before the incident between the Redhead and Creepy Glasses Dude with the monsters and that was it. After learning about the Abyss from Sun-Il and meeting up at Sun-Il's house (which is after the confrontation between the Redhead and Creepy Glasses Dude with the monsters) does he figure out how to grind all of his stats and some of his skills at the same time. That's when he starts grinding.

Thought Baka Tsuki doesn't let anyone read anything that's been copyrighted and I'm pretty sure FoZ is.

Tristain is still going to be invaded regardless of whether or not she has known Void magic.

My point is that they won't be relying on her and her Void magic and Saito like they did in canon which is why they were on the front lines, becaue Saito isn't there and they don't know about her Void magic. They'll most likely keep her behind someplace safe because, like it or not, she's still a newbie practically. As such, they won't insist on her help.

I have a humorous image of Louise explaining how she gets stronger to another mage who slowly descends into a frothing rage at how wrong the explanation is but why is it working??? The other mage in this scenario is probably Eleanore come to think of it. Nerds gotta nerdrage.

they only refuse to post stuff that is already being legally released in the relevant language.

no FoZ LN in north America = Baka Tsuki has English FoZ LNs

when it gets licensed for sale, they take their translations down.

And just why would she want to grind every spell that she got? Most of them probably wouldn't be useful to her or fit with her chosen fighting style and you're forgetting she'd need to learn hundreds, if not thousands of spells per school(Wind, Fire,Water,Earth). No, she'd just have a long list of worthless spells that she'd never use again, so why even bother? No, just no. Either she needs to dedicate herself to one (possibly two) school only and focus on it or focus on a select group of various spells from different schools/elements.

That's just it. Louise is the type to do the opposite.

True enough I suppose.

And if she was smart, she'd keep her head down. But this is the Zero. Smart and cautious aren't in her vocabulary. But don't forget, there are people in other countries or high up enough or in Reconquista that would love to use her then.

Jee-Han gained an Earth Affinity of 10 when he learned Earth Elemental Summoning.

And that's for connecting with one elemental. You're literally connecting with a spirit of earth. Not gaining 10 affinity per random spell learned per school/element. Getting it from an elemental is fine because you are literally connecting with said elemental which is a being/facet of the actual element itself. And he grinded his skill and affinity too afterward. My point is that she doesn't need to grind her spells or further her understanding of the spell/element, just go around collecting spells until she's got a high enough affinity for square+ rank. It's just far easier and faster to collect multiple spells then grind her spells to try and get the affinity up and knowing the Zero, she'll take the fast route over actually having some firepower. After all, she wants to get strong fast as many of you have pointed out.

Different setting, man. Minuseven doesn't have to follow The Gamer setting to the letter. He is allowed to change things to suit his story. Besides given the requirement for Line spells, I feel its justified.

I said learn, not grind. Just learning them is enough to raise her affinity. As for why learn all even if she doesn't use them, rather than grind one or two? Because learning a new spell is relatively easier than grinding. All you need is to read the spell, have an idea of what it does, practice it once or two BAM new spell learned.

Of course, odds are, she would have a few spells that she would concentrate on, my point is, learning new spells would be faster at raising her affinity than grinding existing one. Also I'm talking about Dot Spells in all of this.

My point is that they won't be relying on her and her Void magic and Saito like they did in canon which is why they were on the front lines, becaue Saito isn't there and they don't know about her Void magic. I wouldn't be so sure. While it's unlikely Louise is going to become a Chevalier when she did in canon, the circumstances that lead to it are too easily butterflied away with the absence of Saito, Henrietta might still ask Louise to retrieve the letter from Wales.

That will put her in the heart of the Albion revolution and means there is a good chance she'll end up fighting Wardes, with Gamer's Mind negating the mind-whammy he pulled on her in canon.

So depending upon what level she's reached by then Louise could easily make a big name for herself there.

It's also important to remember that Guiche, a dot mage at the time IIRC, was so far front that he was quite literally the first one into Saxe-Gotha. So if Louise insists on participating she could quite easily end up fighting on the front lines. Maybe not being used as a special weapon but being a regular soldier can quite easily be more dangerous.

@Khepri14 :um, the author has already said that that won't happen.

Why does she need something threatening her to want to improve?
Also, her current goal is to reach a level where she can become an adventurer, which involves her life being in danger. Sure, it's by choice, but questioning someone's drive to become stronger when they intend to throw themselves into dangerous situations is... kind of strange.

Well yes. But they improve by levels. Not gaining 10 points of affinity for just learning the skill which is my beef here. Okay. And?
A high Elemental Affinity is still going to make her spells start off at "terrifyingly strong" and place her solidly in the "basically immune to magic" range. Sure, it doesn't provide that intimate understanding of what a spell does, but until she earns that she can cover it up with the fact that her shittiest fireball is better than yours.

Check TGWP and the Headway Quests and the like and you'll get an idea of what I'm talking about.
...
With the right skills (Physical Endurance or whatever and a healing skill), getting a friend to beat you half (or more!) to death for hours on end is a completely viable training method.
I have read TGWP. I pulled this example from it.

Either she needs to dedicate herself to one (possibly two) school only and focus on it or focus on a select group of various spells from different schools/elements.
One:
<Wind Affinity I (Passive)>
Wind is less harsh on your skin. The hint of an affinity for the element of wind.
> +5% Wind Resistance
> +5% Wind Damage
If learning spells increase your affinity, and a higher affinity provides resistance to a type of magic, having all her immunities maxed out is a great idea.

Two: How is that incompatible with learning all the spells she can? If anything, that makes learning all the spells she can a better idea, since it gives her a wider array of spells to choose from when she decides to start focusing on specific spells.

Three: Why?
She is 100% capable of exceeding the level of mastery that others have in a spell far faster than anyone else in the world. She is capable of achieving a level of mastery in every element achieved by only a small fraction of the mages in Halkegenia in less time than it took the other mages to achieve their mastery of a single element. She can use all those elements simultaneously. Why should she restrict her arsenal?

Pedantry: Dio's a vampire. He doesn't need to breathe.
You tell him to stop, then. See how that goes for you.

And just why would she want to grind every spell that she got? Most of them probably wouldn't be useful to her or fit with her chosen fighting style and you're forgetting she'd need to learn hundreds, if not thousands of spells per school(Wind, Fire,Water,Earth). Except she can't. The author said there is only enough spells to get her to line mage, maybe. No more.
