On top of that, this poor girl is dealing with some pretty heavy stuff, which we might be able to completely fix by just telling her this.

Honestly it's going to bad no matter what we do. Midori is/was crushing hard on us apparently. (Also until we figure out what we're doibg with that I vote we play oblivious to that, not actual oblivious but ignore it in ways that spare her feelings until we figure things out.)

And if- if it had been anyone else in our class, I would be sad, sure… but not like this."

Especially since I think she's in a little bit of denial as to being interested in a girl.

But honestly while in some ways she's getting a second chance - in other ways she's not.

What the hell is wrong with me? I didn't even know her, not really. She could have been a completely horrible person… or someone wonderful

Given how we've played/developed this character so far I expect she'll fund us as someone who's bull headed, somewhat bad at social and a tendency to take a straight forward approach (ie SV) at the same time we are straightforward and we care enough to immediately go help the man, and comfort her now.

Which we'll see how she finds us.

But...

"Three days ago, she got run over by a car. She was leaving the city library with her head in the clouds, and some drunk skipped the corner and plowed right over her, from what I heard."

This'll sting since if we do get along it'll become apparent that she could have been friends with us alive if she had just spoken up. And if so, maybe we wouldn't have been at the library that day, or she could have been there to notice the car.

And we're dead. Time no longer passes for us while she's growing up still. Friends can grow apart but that's different from someone being left behind because there's no other way.

There cannot be any conversations about high school exams, college, work. Because our character won't ever experience it. Even normal school girl activities will probably not be an option. No working on homework together, complaining about teachers or tests, schoolyard gossip...

In someways this is better than never having a chance in others it will possibly be worse as it will prove that something could have been that now never will. A half life state is the best that can happen now.

On the other hand, how many other people can she talk about magical girl stuff with?

Uh, shit, I just remembered, we chose Doppelganger Plot. That... might make for a fun explanation, depending on how well we can prove who we are, and what sort of doppelgangers have been turning up, and how much Midori has heard from our Stranger about them.

If necessary, the Stranger can hopefully verify our identity.

You're really, really, really almost convincing me hope for spontaneous awkward resurrection, or alternatively, Midori-and-Kikuko-ghost-buddies after a near-death-actual-death experience later in the story. Or- hell! Who says we can't live our life? We'll just be- we'll just be corporeally challenged! We'll get some false documentation, put regular clothes over our meguca outfit, get a shady takeout delivery food job! Rob the Yakuza on the other side of Japan for all their cash monies and then liquidate it somewhere on the mainland or something- we'll get really good at money laundering! Put ourself through sketchy internet college/a community college in America if Midori decides to go to an American school so we can road-trip along! Work remotely over the internet in CS or as a reporter or an advice columnist! Or keep up the shady delivery job! Pay rent or haunt luxurious upper levels of hotels!

Maybe they won't be the same exams, maybe we'll have to pay off a shady government official willing to let us get away with a fake identity- but we'll take those damn exams! We'll get a job, go to college- if we have to, we'll sneak into college and spookily write all our attempts at answers on the blackboards while nobody is looking! Walk around a campus as a slightly-odd student who definitely goes to class but nobody knows where they live! Borrow textbooks and access to the course websites from friends, complain about how the university computer system sucks for not recognizing how we're totally a registered student, we swear! Go to our own damn graduation, our own damn reunions- Hell, there's magic around, learn some illusions so it looks like we're growing up, to the rest of the world! Or get really good with disguises and makeup, I guess.

And maybe we won't grow up, but we'll grow older. We'll be Midori's friend for as long as she wants us to be (assuming this conversation and teamwork goes well, anyway), and if we grow close enough we want to have been able to spend a life together, we'll spend the rest of her life together, mortality be damned.

And hey. Death seemed like a pretty chill person. In the end- and all things do- who's to say we can't finally take the last ferry out of life together, someday far from now?

That's all assuming we don't both bad-end or awkward-end in the meanwhile, of course. But there's nothing wrong with a little Hope.

Magical girls are all about the making with the miracles and dreams, yeah?

Not that your speculations are not entertaining, but you are aware that we barely know this person and might not even get along?

Yup. Which is why at least half of that little rant didn't specifically have to do with her, and more with life, and being alive even if we're dead.

We'll get along with Midori or we won't, but there's more than a little tragedy in just being dead at however-teen-old. All the things we'd miss- whether we'd miss doing them with someone specific or not.

It's all those, more than anything else, that I mean to say aren't necessarily lost to us.

(Though I will confess, I also always do like a good story of ghostly roommate hijinks, so, I mean, if we do end up with the option to go there...)

This is exactly what I didn't want to see happen. If we flee or outright lie, we're being assholes. The latter potentially makes sense, but it's the sort of thing that will crash and burn later, and not in a glorious way. If we tell the truth, we're probably dropping too much on Midori (and probably ourselves as well).

... Fuck it. We've given up any pretense of actually playing the mysterious character anyway; might as well just go ahead and tell her.

[X] I'm Magical Girl [Insert title here]. I'll keep your identity a secret, but please forgive me if I'm not quite ready to divulge my own just yet.

A sufficiently mysterious answer? Something that spaces out the revelation so she can sort out her feelings better until then, but which also doesn't have us making a complete ass of ourselves in the process.

Well, I was intending to go for a half-truth 'I am actually a ghost and I go by this moniker now', which is neither a lie nor an entire truth, which allows us to close that topic hard but leaves the possibility to admit the second half later after she calms down a bit... but that was before I took a look at the votes.

I also hate the line about frantically apologising (what for?) with the intensity of a thousand suns. Way to rub her nose in the fact she has done something embarassing. I do think it would be best if we ignored her crush as if we have never heard about it.

I'll probably sit this one out, unless someone else wants to join in.

Edit: Hm, ColdGoldLazarus beat me to it. I suppose that is close enough to my intent, though still a bit lacking on the half-truth department to satisfy Green's curiosity. The ghost part is something that could probably be safely divulged.

That's more about the fact we're terrible at explaining we're dead and for making people worry, at least in my version. No crush-mocking intended, only 'oh gosh I'm being a ghost when people are upset about me being dead oh golly' and whatnot.

It's an apology for 'making things awkward'. What exactly makes the situation awkward for the two?

And what did we even do to make things traumatizing (God, that word is overused)? Except died. Does it not sound like 'sorry I died' to you?

However I look at this line, it does not sit well with me.

Congratulations, turns out the power of friendship was a literal job benefit and you get to have another shot at this. Now, let's talk about those free Paris vacations you mentioned.
On a not joking note, yeah, dragging out a mystery person plot sounds like trouble. Let's just take this like the crazytrain it is and not set us up for a hurtful moment of Greeny feeling mislead. Don't think the apaology line is needed though.

We'll get some false documentation, put regular clothes over our meguca outfit, get a shady takeout delivery food job!
Might be worth to try if we can actually take the magical girl clothes off while staying transformed.

Also
I mentioned this quest to a friend, and they said it sounded a lot like Danny Phantom
A comparison I never would have thought of, but it makes way too much sense.
Honestly? So far the premise reminds me more of Yuu Yuu Hakusho, for what it's worth.

Yeah, I have mixed feelings here. As Scify pointed out, we're not really living up to the 'mysterious' trait so far, but at the same time Midori's emotional state is too fragile to be screwing around with just for the sake of presenting ourselves a certain way. :/

Going with this as my final vote, but with mind toward Scify's comment for future actions.
