Sidestory - Somnia Virtua Chapter 2.4
I have little new progress on the update to report, but I have just finished my first contribution to the Somnia Virtua Magical Girl Crossover Project, found here. It is 4.5K words of Kikuko's perspective as she deals with a mercurial Princess, her troubled Lady-In-Waiting, an aggravating Jester, and more. More directly relevant, now that this is out of the way, I hope to finish the remainder of the update here without much further delay, as my prior writer's block seems to have been mercifully dislodged by writing that crossover installment.

Halloween Index Update
Happy Halloween!

While I do not have the next update ready as I had hoped for, I am happy to report that I making meaningful progress with it once more. In lieu of that, however, I have given the index post a significant restructuring; making the table of contents far more prominent, and making the cast list far more comprehensive.

(In the cast list, I have also created and edited some picrew images as visual reference for most of the main and supporting characters, since I cannot currently afford to commission more art. Most are still not as accurate as I would like them to be, but I hope that they will be a sufficiently interesting stopgap for the time being.)

And in the spirit of the holiday, please take a treat below.

In another minor retcon announcement, I noticed some outdated information given about the Artifacts during the Q&A with Nel in Episode 2.

As of the Valentine's Memo Intermission, this is true:
Ever since the decision to split each Empowering Artifact into a set of seven fragments in accordance with the splitting of the Throne,

And so this passage written before that is incorrect:
They had a strange sort of… not quite respect for them, but something almost like it, so from the original seven crystals They had forged in magical research, They created the many artifacts, always in sets of seven.

To rectify that, I have updated it to read as such:
They had a strange sort of… not quite respect for them, but something almost like it. So from the original seven crystals They had forged in magical research, They created the many Artifacts, though at the time they were not split by color as they are now.

And added more to a later sentence to also be more accurate.
Thus the Magical Girls, and repurposing the once-harmful Artifacts into a positive cause; splitting each of them into sets of seven.

Happy New Year!

I am still making progress, slow but steady, despite the holidays and work making it difficult to find the time. Out of this current update, half of it is completed, another seventh of it is completed but in need of revision, and I have approximately four and a half scenes remaining to write. My apologies once again for the unintended hiatus, but even with the crossover project, the other quest, and my IRL obligations, I hope to get this moving properly again soon in the new year.

Thank you! I am glad that you enjoyed it, and I appreciate your well-wishes. I have been making further progress, a little bit at a time, and am very near the finish line. (Sans revisions, of course.) I have not checked the wordcount thus far, but I strongly suspect that this will be a fairly lengthy update when all is said and done.

[X] Go To The Town (You are sure Death was going to nag you about it before she saw you being pathetic. Even if she is not pushing you on it now, you may as well take out all your feelings on that stupid spirit. You are not a violent person, but you feel the need to hurt something right now.) (…Something that isn't your family, anyway.)

Bad news - vote is closed
Good news - your vote won!

Additionally, I'm very concerned that delaying it could make the spirit situation a lot worse - after all, there must be a reason why we're getting this option for the second update in a row.

So just going to be touching on this -

Something with the structure of the quest is that the quest voted in what plot lines are in effect. (For those not here from the start we almost had the entire enchilada of all the plot problems).

The ghost "side quest" was also voted in - even if at a later time.

I would say structurally that thread/plotline is eligible to be treated as one of the issues of the city. If the thread had decided it wasn't out cup of tea it could have been like the Mafia story arc that didn't happen.

Kikuko is not a traditional heroine character in most aspects. But she does fulfill a more traditional archetype of being the one to step forward when asked the first time. (Yes it was due to being a ghost and not having reasons to say no but that's part of the non-traditional bit. Kikuko is structurally in terms of story role/composition strongly rooted as the hero by that answer of yes). And with her yes the rest of the group coalesced.

Oh Midori was willing to say yes on the second go around, but it was on the second ask. And probably not enough to get Pallavi to sign on and start the cascade.

Kikuko has this sense of: "If not you then who?" And the character does not appear to see that her saying yes to the role of hero is what makes her the hero.

Nel-san could have picked their first choice, whoever it is that actually deserves this stupid magic ring.

And the ghost plotline - it's the one that most strongly hits upon Kikuko's main strength as a hero.

No one else is coming. No one would have known if Kikuku said no besides her and Death. And so far there's no one that could have done it either. (Now I'd not be surprised if later on Kikuko has to ask for help because her isolation is an issue and arguably was what killed her if a delay/lack of reporting of her being run over is what tipped the balance of her surviving)

But as the known plotlines go - Death and Kikuko's eventual "Stopping a Serial Killer" or whatever is causing the trapped spirits is liable to hew close to a few emotional centers of Kikuko's arc.

How is she important (like oh being someone that will step up), refutation of people dying unjustly just being forgotten (since she was killed by a hit and run).

And for all the other conflicts appear to be either primarily non-human in source (Juicebox, Doppelgangers, Portal) or at least have a significant element in making things go from Bad to worse (Dragon, Suspected Yellow Ring Terminator) - a random kinda bog normal serial killer doing necromancy just tossing in a Molotov cocktail into the mess just sounds about right.

Humans can be monsters without any outside interference. That is why it's so important that humans can be heroes as well.

Extras - Music Post (Redux Part II)
I have made a redux music post for the heroines, (though I have since added some additional third tracks for particular characters) but revising and editing a particular section of the coming update has reminded me of something else. I have not fulfilled on a more expansive list for the antagonists and villains they will be facing, so it is time to fix that.

As before, since I cannot embed more than five videos, I will be listing them as links. I will not be giving out who goes to what, of course, but I will connect them by shared story threads, in no particular order. This time I did force myself to only one piece per character, (barring a handful of specific exceptions who truly warrant the additional music, denoted by tildes) so the number of songs per storyline is somewhat more uneven. However, I have highlighted the more primary antagonists in bold, and indirect ones in italics.

I am very curious what may be made of these.

One: Song 1 - Song 2
Two: Song 1 - Song 2
Three: Song 1 - Song 2 - Song 3 - Song 4 ~ Song 5 - Song 6 - Song 7
Four: Song 1 ~ Song 2 - Song 3 - Song 4
Five: Song 1 - Song 2
Six: Song 1 ~ Song 2 - Song 3 ~ Song 4

Portrait - Midori Kazane by Hskachu New

Writing progress has unfortunately slowed again, but is still happening by increments. However, in a silver lining, I am happy to say that I was able to find contact again with the artist who drew Kikuko's portrait in 2019, and have made arrangements to commission the rest of the team as well; beginning with Midori.
