*Says he doesn't know why girls are suddenly turning the offer down* *Immediately offers colors with attached personality traits that match with PMMM characters*

...

Other than that, maybe explain that someone made a really dark deconstruction of the magical girl genre? I feel kind of bad if he doesn't even know about it.

This seems interesting!

Yuki Yuna as well, but point taken.
*Blinks* *Ponders* ... Okay. I can see the point for most of those actually.

Just... *Looks at Yuna* *Looks at Pink. Low Offense* *Looks back to watch Yuna literally punch God in the face*

But Red, Blue, Purple, and Pink all fit the PMMM cast way too well as well. Orange as well maybe if you count Charolette. That was a trickily tanky little witch.

Updates should be every other day, circumstances permitting. Not likely to be online during the weekend, though. Next few updates will be about character-bulding, the rules, and some voting on the broad scenario, and then after that we can get right into the action.

True. I had someone else in mind with Orange, but I can see the connection.

Too much grimdark in what really should be a lighthearted affair typically?
Indeed. Some use it well, others less so. And then at least two, maybe three, of the big magical-girl quests here open with a giant monster killing hundreds of people; I just got sick of it after a while. Though I suppose the very premise of this quest makes me a hypocrite.

*Looks at Sailor Moon Manga* ... Define lighthearted.
I'll admit to not having read the manga... and having only vague recollections of watching the series when I was younger. Certainly could be darker than I recall.

The manga was considerably darker yes. They... made it a lot more friendly in the anime.

The monsters from the manga are nightmarish eldritch abominations.

As far as I'm aware, which amounts to a "I think", Naoko meant for it to end after the fight with Beryl. Before Silver Crystal shenanigans. As in it ends with literally everyone involved dead.

Usagi is also... optimistic is a Realist way. She doesn't think everything is going to end well, instead she always looks to the Silver Lining. She's a "Devil in the Details" very different, but still very similar to anime!Usagi.

She's also legitimately very smart. She just doesn't want to work because she's aware on some level that she's the Princess, so she lazes about instead.

PMMM was a... overreaction return to roots. It got back to the basic darkness, but took it too far really.

I am glad it came along though. The Magical Girl genre was getting too... saccharine really.

Tokyo Mew Mew could have been great, it was slated to be eldritch horror in the same way Sailor Moon was, but the editors just mauled the poor thing.

Not that light-hearted is a bad thing. I just feel you need a good amount of both of the sub-genres. Honestly the CCS reboot/continuation is probably appreciated all the more because the darker sub-genre made a come back as well.

I see; that is rather different.

Hadn't thought of it that way before. I do agree that just saccharine all the time isn't good either; it just seems like it's gone too far the other way, and simply because it's now considered the cool thing to do. Maybe the general tone will balance out over time, once this industry phase has run its course. Some dark, some light, most somewhere in between.

Hopefully yes. I think it'll at least remain more balanced, how much more remains to be seen.

The darker Sub-Genre is generally easier to write about as well because it comes ready made with more broadly appealing Problems to try and overcome if nothing else.

PMMM specifically is also just one of those things that hooked SV in general pretty good, probably because the Urobutcher crafted it to be so hopeless.

And, like I pointed, the new CCS is here now. CCS is just friggin adorable and is my example of choice for "You want to write/watch/read light-hearted Magical Girl stuff? Look at this." So the lighter sub-genre may be kicking off soon ish?

Oh! And the new Precure season is a good mix of light and dark from what I've heard.

Arguably, magical girl stories have been going through the same thing that American comics went through in the late 80s and 90s. Thankfully, they don't seem to have swung quite as dark (as grim as PMMM gets, it doesn't exactly sink into "hard man making hard decisions while mired in carnage" territory), and I think there are signs that the genre is already coming out the other side. Now if only they hadn't made Rebellion and the various spinoff properties...

Did you know: Kill La Kill is technically a magical girl anime.
It is? Based on what I've heard, I pegged it more as shounen. Or smut.

That all makes sense. Seems I overreacted a bit.

I'm not sure where you get smut, but there is some debate on whether or not KLK is a magical girl anime. Some argue based upon things like the fanservice and general un-MG-esque plot, whereas others argue based on the transformation sequences, the nature of the themes of the narrative, and so on. It's actually quite an interesting debate, though it's mostly found on places like tumblr.

Eh, yes and no. The shounen influence is definitely strong, but the nudism aspect is played... weirdly. It's really hard to explain.

Now if only they hadn't made Rebellion and the various spinoff properties...
I think what bothers me more is that they made Rebellion, and then haven't really progressed the main story since then. Five years later and I still have no idea how I feel about that ending.

I think they did release a pitch-pilot or something either at the beginning of the year or end of last year. Shame nothing has come of it though.

We're a Ghost Magical Girl. There is no other choice. (Okay fine, there was another choice. Green was the other possibility, but I just prefer Purple.)
