It's LIke XCOM, But With More Sparkles -- Henshin Heroes & Heroines HQ Quest!

I'm hoping that we'll get more actions for the sectors at some point. The tech and magic sectors especially need an additional action, since they need to research various topics, design new items, and train heroes. It'll get worse as more Incidents occur and once we can get more heroes to train.

Maybe we'll be able to hire assistants for the sector heads eventually? We might be able to do so now, depending on what exactly any recruited allies would do, but I'm leery of SCANning when we don't have any more hero slots open. Though I think the GM said that SCANs should be more heavily tilted to whichever slots we have open.

Chapter 1: Turn 9 - DP1
Sector I – Interact (Jin Hansou)

You make sure to set aside a period of time to interview Jin. Normally, you'd have less of a workload, but with Maya gone you have to do that much more paperwork.

)( EXTRA EVENT – JIN HANSOU I )(

Sector II – Produce – 3, 1 = 4 (FAIL)

You set Sector II to work producing new material, only for Nailo to return with news that one of the machines has busted. Looks like you'll need to pay to replace it.

(-1 Resource)

Sector III – Design (Stunner Attachment) – 5, 6 = 11 (PURE SUCCESS)

Geta-Pi-Theta informs you that adapting the stun blaster into an under-barrel attachment will be easy enough. He has the design on your desk for approval by the next day. Go him.

(Stunner Attachment added to BUILD)

Sector IV – Investigate (Chimera) – 6, 5 = (PURE SUCCESS + ABILITY BONUS)

Michelle delivers the report promptly, and this one is a bit of a doozy. You'd give her a raise if she actually accepted money for her work.

REPORT: Chimera, stylized as χ-MERA, proclaims themselves to be a 'Bio-Evolutionary Research and Progression Organization' that seeks to 'revolutionize the human genome and transcend the limits of the double-helix,' whatever the fuck that means. In practice, Chimera has had their hands behind a half-dozen really shady companies and organizations worldwide, all of whom have conducted massively unethical human experimentation. You've heard about some of them; Zamano Biotech and the Kuramoto Children come to mind. You wouldn't be surprised if the JSDF used some of their tech when they were doing the experiments Odessa was involved in.

Chimera is the sort of nightmare organization that gives transhumanism a bad name. Their goal, given their pattern of behavior, is to forcibly enhance the human race one way or another, ethics and conscience be damned. They've also dabbled in a few other biology-related fields like bio-terrorism and pharmacology. They also have a bad habit of loaning out biologically-enhanced super-soldiers and actual monsters to third-world dictators and petty warlords in exchange for a hefty paycheck.

The organization's goals often lead it to targeting research labs, hospitals and other similar places for sabotage or theft. Unique genetic specimens and advanced biotech also draw their attention for kidnapping and exploitation. They've been known to use small-scale biological weaponry when they want to make a point or wipe out their competition. When they attack, they attack with obviously-enhanced soldiers that have been codenamed 'Spartoi' and even augmented attack animals. What makes them very dangerous is that their agents look normal until they decide to hulk out. Expect foes with superhuman physical capabilities.

BONUS: While the actual brains behind the organization remains hidden, their major agents have been identified, though only in what can best be described as their 'war forms.' These include a muscular, seemingly invulnerable lion-man, a many-headed and venomous dragon-man, and an enormous three-headed dog.

Sector V – Train (Subaru) – 2, 6 = 8 (FLAWED SUCCESS)

After the run-in with the Nightmare Kingdom, you send Subaru to work with Falter for a while. The wizard instructs Subaru in a variety of magical and spiritual topics. While it's unlikely she'll be able to cast spells, she does learn how to apply the knowledge she gains and even demonstrates her own skills by pickpocketing Falter.

(+1 EXP to Subaru)
(* SUBARU LEVEL UP! Ability Unlocked: Light-Fingered *)

Sector VI – Heal (Subaru)

Looks like Subaru's well on the mend. A bit more time to recover and she should be fully healed.

(Subaru recovers 1 Health)

Sector VII – Train (Naoko) – 1, 3 = 4 (FAIL)

Odessa actually comes to you after her practice with Naoko and tells you she kind of feels bad about throwing the girl around on the mat.

(No XP for you.)

TURN 9 – DRAMA PHASE
EXTRA EVENT 1

Your interview with Jin occurs almost a day after you get him inducted into the base. Thankfully he doesn't seem to hold you punching him in the nose against you.

You watch him for a while before you approach him, trying to better gauge his attitude. He's similar to Yukimura in some ways; neither of them seem particularly chatty or sociable around the other Heroes you've recruited. There are differences though; Yukimura seems to hold himself apart out of caution, while Jin seems more like he's observing the others and looking for moments of weakness. Still intense, but in a more calculating way.

You do eventually call Jin up to your office. He waves off your offer of coffee or tea and sits with excellent posture.

"So," you open with, "getting comfortable here at the base?"

He nods. "It's not as secure as I'd like, but it'll do. Thank you."

"Consider your opinion duly noted."

"I assume you've called me in to talk about the SAD?" He gets to the point very quickly.

"Partly," you reply as you swirl your coffee. "I try to make a habit of getting to know my subordinate… you don't mind if I call you that, do you?"

He shrugs. "I've been called worse. What do you want to know?"

We're going to learn about SAD, no matter which we pick right?

[X] Ask something about himself (his past, his family, his ambitions, etc.)

Learning about Jin should help us figure out why exactly he acted against SAD the way he did. I'm hoping for some sort of justification for why he chose to kill those people, especially if SAD decides to publicize that we recruited him.

Yes and no. You can Suggest asking about SAD directly, or you can learn more about him with some tangential information about SAD mixed in. It depends if you want to earn his trust or just use him as a handy source of info.

Eh, I guess I'll stick with asking about him. We did recruit him so we should be working towards gaining his trust. We'll just have to INTERACT with him again at some point.

Favorite hobby: Teleporting behind you?

I think we probably want to start with earning his trust, then.

Sheesh, Naoko really hasn't been having much good luck since she joined us, has she?
On the positive side, at least we're on the way to find out what Odessa's special ability is for failing three Training actions (I've noticed that not all unlockable ally abilities have a counter in the Codex).

Speaking of the codex, I've noticed that Subaru and Yukimura still have injuries. I know Heroes heal from their injuries by 1 every 2 turns, but are they healed at the end of the second turn or the start of the third?

You've heard about some of them; Zamano Biotech and the Kuramoto Children come to mind.
Zamano Biotech would've been the enemy organization for our Bio origin, right? On that subject, in regards to the alternate origins of our characters, do those potential characters still exist as other roles in this timeline (e.g. the other people not selected to be UNSEAT's administrator), and would we potentially run into them down the road?

Now finally, in regards to Jin, our start with him was rocky to say the least, so we'd better rectify that. Plus, it also seems like a good way to touch on his beef with SAD.

How has the entire international community not come down on them like a sack of bricks yet?

Also, Naoko has the weirdest luck. Out of her 4 rolls thus far, she's got 3 Fails and a Pure Success, plus she rolled a 1 on every one of those failures and a 6 on the success. She's a girl of extremes, apparently.

We may need to Interact with her to keep her morale up and help her next turn. Since we can't recruit until we expand, we might as well help her.

@storysmith112358 in order of questions posed:

1) Yes. I'm trying to keep on top of the codex with mixed success. Feel free to point out when I've fallen behind.
2) Heroes recover Health/Stress at the end of the Drama Phase, in addition to any recovered via HEAL/THERAPY
3) You'll likely run into characters using the same power sets that're mentioned in the Backgrounds, as well as several of the enemy factions that were mentioned.

@NyxNull

Because they're one of those secret evil supervillain organizations that's hard to pin down?
Because they do it to people they can get away with?
Because carefully calculated bribery and corruption are omnipresent threats to democracy?
Because that's how these sorts of tropes work?
It's kinda like asking why the US didn't just bomb Cobra Island into a glassy crater to take care of the international terror threat.

I'm really torn about what to research next for the magical sector. Hikaru's grandmother was able to give us historical information about the Nightmare Kingdom, and it sounds like things have really changed so we should probably research it. On the other hand, we can research Shadow Crystal Modification, which should set off a chain of at least 2 more actions that results in a new item and progress towards unlocking Falter and Nailo's abilities. Also, Nailo has an ability that can be unlocked by building 6 pieces of gear, and we have 3 pieces already with the stunner attachment as a possible fourth. Though I'm not sure whether the Shadow Crystal Modification will lead to gear specifically.

Since he specifically tried to warn us about SAD, we should probably take that seriously and pump him for info. That's why we recruited him in the first place, isn't it?

This hasn't been threadmarked yet. Also, the Chimera organization hasn't been added to the Forces of Evil in the Codex. Is that because we haven't actually encountered them yet?

I've been thinking some more about this, and I'm not sure if Shadow Crystal Modification counts for Falter and Nailo's abilities. It might be something that Falter does on his own with existing items. I'm probably going to vote for researching the Nightmare Kingdom next turn because I feel like we should probably learn more about them before messing with their tech.

Researching the stasis pods in the tech sector will put something in the to-BUILD pipeline. I'm hoping for a prison that can hold especially dangerous prisoners or a way to preserve research items like corpses past the end of the chapter.

That leaves only Sector VII for training. I'm torn between trying to train Naoko again and training Yukimura. While I'm hoping to INTERACT with Naoko next turn, which has a chance for XP, it feels like NOT training her might be taken as giving up on her and that we're babying her. On the other hand, we haven't tried training Yukimura yet, and we told him that we'd help him. Training him might be a sign that we're trying to help him prepare for any upcoming dangers, or it could signal to him that we're just interested in his fighting abilities. Whoever I vote for training, I definitely want to research Therianthropy to help Yukimura out.

I'd rather Interact with Subaru (we keep putting that off), and have Odessa take another shot at Naoko - on considering it further, leveling up through training can get extra traits and I really want to get rid of Untrained. Researching Therianthropy sounds like a good bet for helping Yukimura, and maybe it'll advantage later training in some way. Or maybe it'll just help him not have to eat like a black hole.

We should have 2 actions again next turn. I want to INTERACT with both Subaru and Naoko if nothing else comes up.

Good point about Untrained. Naoko for Sector VII, it is!
