It's LIke XCOM, But With More Sparkles -- Henshin Heroes & Heroines HQ Quest!

"Several. Most of them were in self-defense."

"…Most?"

You inhale and nod, tucking your hands into your pockets. "Yeah. There was… one exception. I don't like talking about it."
I've gotta say, I really enjoy the little hints at our MC's backstory. I wonder if we'll find out that the exception was the criminal who killed Makoto's father?

Not actually dead. Just having a dry spell. Long weekend and still trying to find work.
I'll post up the next post when I feel the spirit move me once again.

The job hunt's a bitch. Keep your head up.

Also, praise the God of Legally Distinct Characters that our psychic shrink is an expy of living saint Kiara Sesshouin and not "I want to literally fuck the world" Kiara Sesshouin. I'd keep her far, far away from any MAGIC or PSI-based mindwhammy vectors, though. :V

Got rejected from my first interview last week, and had a sudden surprise one today... As in they called and i headed down same day. After five months of nothing. Seasonal job hoooo.

Job hunting can be downright weird. Take care of yourself and don't worry about things here. We understand.

Chapter 1: Turn 13 - BP 2
Sector I – Interact (Hikaru, Yukimura), Support (Destress)

You put Maya to work getting the workers in Sector II to calm down while you plan out what you plan to discuss with Hikaru and Yukimura.

(Sector II status upgraded to Normal)
)( EXTRA EVENT – HIKARU II )(
)( EXTRA EVENT – YUKIMURA II )(

Sector II – Produce – 5, 3, 4 = 9 (FLAWED SUCCESS)

The production facilities are brought back online, though Nailo is definitely being cautious considering how temperamental they've been recently. Nailo notifies you that he's going to do maintenance next week just to make sure nothing's damaged after this production run.

(+1 Resources)
(Cannot use PRODUCE next turn.)

Sector III – Design (Stunner Grenades) – 3, 2, 6 = 9 (FLAWED SUCCESS)

Geta completes the design for the Stunner Grenades on time. However, the special materials to build them are going to cost, driving up the initial production costs.

(Stunner Grenades added to BUILD.)
(+1 to Stunner Grenade BUILD cost.)

Sector IV – Investigate (Magical Girl Delinquents) – 5, 2, 3 = 8 (FLAWED SUCCESS)

The report from Michelle arrives shortly on your desk.

REPORT: After reviewing the gathered security footage and other reports, it appears that Michelle has narrowed down the delinquent activities down to three particular gangs at a trio of lower-class high schools. The three ringleaders are a trio of Magical Girls, each with her own unique power set and each with a grudge against the others. While things haven't gotten to the point of all-out war, it may be a good idea to intervene. Maybe you can find out what's going on before things get messy.

(New option to PATROL available.)

Sector V – Design (Psychic Stabilizer) – 3, 3, 4, +1 = 8 (FLAWED SUCCESS)

The Stabilizer design takes a bit of time to put together, though Falter eventually lands on a simple, wand-shaped device tipped with an array of purple crystalline shards. It does look a bit out of place in the general military aesthetic of UNSEAT, but hey, it works. Unfortunately, the psychic emanations from experimenting on the crystals have started to wear on the staff, and everyone's a bit snappish come the weekend.

(Psychic Stabilizer added to BUILD)
(Sector V status downgraded to Stressed.)

Sector VI – Research (Therianthropy) – 4, 3, 1 = 7 (FLAWED SUCCESS)

You receive the report from Sector VI midway through the week.

REPORT: There have been more than a few experiments with the stated goal of imparting animal traits and capabilities to humans. While functionally similar to supernatural processes like lycanthropy and similar beliefs, those that undertook such experiments have approached it from a strictly scientific process, often involving highly advanced Ultratech-level biotechnology, genetic tampering and augmentation. Successful and stable examples of therianthropic enhancement are extremely rare; most subjects either exhibit atavistic mutations related to the source of their augmentation (like Odessa) or find themselves suffering a wide variety of metabolic and physiological side effects (like Yukimura). However, it is possible that there could be a way to stabilize such changes to help improve the victim's quality of life.

(Additional data will be required to continue this topic.)

Sector VII – Recruit – 5, 1, 2 = 7 (FLAWED SUCCESS)

With most of your soldiers busy with the SDF, you put Odessa to work getting some more able-bodied meat shields. She's able to call in some favors she owes to get some additional manpower as quickly as she can, but you get the feeling her abrasive actions have ruffled more than a few feathers in some pretty high places.

(+1 Combat Personnel)
(-1 Favor)

DRAMA PHASE

EXTRA EVENT I

This time around, you catch Hikaru in Sector VII's gym. An odd place to find him given what you know of his habits, but not unsurprising. You pause near the entranceway to watch him jog on the treadmill, trying to tamp down the sense of amusement you feel at the sight. Wouldn't do to laugh even though he's trying his best.

You wave him down as he climbs off the treadmill and offer him a towel to wipe himself off with. "Good to see you taking advantage of the facilities, Hikaru-san."

"Yeah," he says between heavy breaths. "Odessa-san wanted me to… do more cardio in civilian form… whew…"

That explains a few things. "Well, I don't want to interrupt your workout…"

"No… it's fine. I could use… a bit of a breather." He straightens himself up and lets the breath whoosh out. "What did you need?"

EXTRA EVENT II

Most of the time, Yukimura doesn't meander far from the canteen. This time, however, you find him in Sector VI, just after he finishes a check-up with the medical staff. The staff member trots off with a few vials of Yukimura's blood for lab tests as you enter.

Yukimura rolls down the long sleeve of his shirt as you enter and looks at you. He looks better than when you last saw him, though that's really not saying much. "Yes?"

"You doing alright, Yukimura?" It's a fair question, all things considered.

Yukimura shrugs. "Alive. That's good for now."

"Figured we could shoot a little higher than just 'alive,' you reply, eliciting a grunt in reply.

"Details." He rubs his forearm then looks at you. "Want to talk?"

In an effort to keep my sanity and prevent burnout, I'm going to increase the time limit to 48 hours and see how that goes. You know what to do.

A lot of flawed successes this turn, and we lost 1 FAVOR which is better than losing 1 MORALE at least. I'll probably just vote for the teammate questions unless someone comes up with a good write-in or argument for another option.

Well, it's not Hikaru and grandma, but I will pursue my plans nonetheless!

[X][Hikaru] (Write-in) Take them both out for Karaoke.

ok, you know what? There's something I'm curious about, and I'll try to ask it!

[X][Hikaru] (Write-in) Ask about his feelings/opinion about the gender-bending he goes through everytime he transforms.

It's both something potentially funny to read about, and it would be nice to know if it was giving him some kind of psychological problem.
He might also feel insecure about it, which means he needs some support.

I mean, for all we know he's attracted to Touma, or Touma is attracted to his FEMALE form, and he doesn't know what to do about it.

I kind of feel like this should either be ask about himself or ask about his relationship with his teammates and then let him decide what he feels comfortable saying. Though I voted for talking to Hikaru because I was hoping to push him more towards the leadership role by asking about his relationship with his teammates.

It's a bit disappointing how little we got from researching Therianthropy, but at least it's a start, and we can probably get more research material whenever Chimera attacks. Usually, I start thinking about what to do during the next base phase at this point, but I'm expecting another Incident at the end of this turn, which should lead to more options during the next base phase. If there isn't an Incident, then we can start BUILDing the rescue system next phase.

Think Hikaru has a good handle on most things, be good to foster a bit of team play with them though.

[X][Yukimura] Ask something about himself (his past, his family, his ambitions, etc.)

Poor thing probably sick of being cooped up too, take them out for a break!

Well, we have pinpointed him as someone who can take the lead, so let's see how he feels about his team.

[X][Yukimura] Ask something about himself (his past, his family, his ambitions, etc.)

We've already talked about the topic we brought him in for (who did this to him), so let's make sure he knows we think of him more than just an asset or a science project, but a man in distress and a vital part of the team.

Chapter 1: Turn 13 - BP 3
"So," you say as Hikaru rubs his hair with the towel, "how're things with you and the others?"

Hikaru pauses and pulls the towel down around his neck, hands gripping the ends as he considers your question. "I… um… get along fine with them, ma'am."

(The lie was so transparent you almost feel insulted.) You arch an eyebrow at Hikaru, which results in him wilting just a little.

"It's just…" Hikaru scratches his cheek nervously, "I'm a little intimidated by most of the others. Subaru-san is really smart and quick-thinking, and Touma-san Is always really confident about everything…"

"Self-effacing isn't a good look on anybody," you interrupt. (Best to nip that in the bud; you already get enough of it out of Touma.)

"Sorry."

"What about Jin?" You watch Hikaru tense up a bit as you ask that. "I'm guessing you two don't get along well?"

"I… I don't really like Jin-san," Hikaru replies, frowning deeply. "I get that he's experienced, but he always acts like he's the one who should be in charge."

"And you disagree?"

Hikaru bites his lip. "Well… no… I mean, we're supposed to be a team. We should work together and listen to each other. I don't think Jin likes doing that very much."

"I don't disagree." You hold up a finger to keep Hikaru quiet. "But here's the problem with always looking for a consensus; that's not always possible during a crisis. Sometimes, somebody has to take charge and give the orders when you're in the field."

"I-I know, but…"

"It sounds to me like you think you'd do a better job than Jin." You cross your arms, curious as to how he'll react to this.

(Hikaru remembers prior conversations.)

Hikaru looks down for a while, then takes a deep breath and looks up at you. "Maybe I… Maybe I could. Ma'am."

"Well then, maybe you should go talk to Jin about that."

Hikaru winces slightly. "Maybe… not right now."

You nod in satisfaction. Maybe the otaku has a spine in there after all.

(Hikaru gains +1 EXP)
(Hikaru will remember this in the future.)

"You know," you say as Yukimura gets to his feet, "you don't really talk much about yourself, do you?"

Yukimura gives you a look that could best be interpreted as 'ya think so?' before he rubs the injection site.

"I'm not trying to pry just to sate my own curiosity," you continue. "It's more that I don't know a whole lot about you outside of basic research. I know you have family up in Hokkaidō…"

He snorts at that. "Blood relations. Not family. We left after parents died."

"We?"

"Me and my sister. Yukiko."

You're starting to sense a theme with the names, but decide not to comment on it. "Were you two close?"

He nods softly. "Very." He fumbles with his pants pocket before he produces his wallet. He opens it and pulls out a folded photo from one of the pockets. It's faded, but you can see an image of a much younger looking Yukimura and a slightly older girl. Both of them have dark hair. They're standing in front of what appears to be a lake with an older gentleman in a long, intricately-patterned robe with a full beard who you guess is likely their father.

"Did something happen?"

He adjusts the collar of his shirt. "Lost track of her after Chimera took me. Haven't found her yet."

You swallow. "I'm sorry to hear that."

"Better me than her," he replies, not looking you in the eye. (His closed-off body language and lack of eye-contact suggest that that's not entirely true.)

"You know, I could have the guys in Sector IV see if they can find her for you."

Yukimura glances at you, then nods again. "Would like that."

You hand the photo back and gently pat him on the arm. "I'll see what I can do, alright?"

"Thank you," he says softly, right before his stomach growls. "Sorry."

"No worries. Go get something to eat."

Yukimura excuses himself and walks out of the door. You watch him leave quietly.

(Yukimura gains +1 EXP)

As you watch Yukimura walk out, your phone goes off. You answer quickly. "Hongo."

"Administrator, you might want to come up to Central Command," the bridge bunny on the other end says. "We may have a situation."

"On my way."

* * *
You soon arrive at Central Command. The door hisses shut as you walk around your desk. "Talk to me people. What's the situation?"

"Sir," one of the bridge bunnies says, "there's some sort of disturbance going on outside of the base. Outputting security footage to Monitor One now."

The monitor in question swings down to your eye level as security footage begins to output to it. It's a view from one of the exterior base cameras outside of the parking garage one of the base entrances are hidden in. A very large man in a very fluffy aviator jacket is standing in front of the hidden door leading to the deployment elevator, his arms crossed and his feat planted firmly. He looks up at the camera you're looking through and grins, flashing a peace sign before his lips move.

You glance to the bridge bunny who spoke up earlier. "Can we get audio?"

"Yes ma'am. One second."

There's a slight delay before you hear a deep manly voice boom through the speakers.

"-know you're in there, and I know you guys can see me. Let's not make this any more difficult than it has to be. Send your boys out already, or I'm gonna come in there myself!"

"Ma'am?" One of the bridge bunnies peers around the monitor at you. "What should we do?"

How do you respond?

[ ] IGNORE HIM – This is so obviously a trap. If we pretend he's not there, he might leave.

[ ] MOBILIZE – This is so obviously a threat. Send out your Heroes and see what this guy wants.

[ ] LET'S CHAT – This is so obviously a challenge. Talk to him via intercom and see what he wants.

Voting closes in 48 hours.

...Yanno what?
[X] MOBILIZE – This is so obviously a threat. Send out your Heroes and see what this guy wants.
Personally? Looking at this description, he doesn't sound like a Tech, he could be magic but Aviator Jacket isn't associated with magic. Pyschic...Isn't impossible but showing up alone seems outside the M.O for those guys. Bio?...Can't rule it out, but he seems normal enough beyond the size to not be an Alien. And of course, can't forget the annoyingly undetectable powerset of Trained, though those guys also strike me as the LEAST likely to issue challenges at all, comes with the territory of getting hospitalized if you eat a superpunch to your face.
