It's LIke XCOM, But With More Sparkles -- Henshin Heroes & Heroines HQ Quest!

It turns out that we're next getting funding on turn 13 so it's a matter of how many RESOURCES Sector II can PRODUCE and how many the stasis system requires. I tried to quote it from the turn 9 BP, but the quote didn't work for some reason.

We actually haven't INVESTIGATEd the Nightmare Kingdom. The topic only appeared for Sector V and not Sector IV. We did ask Hikaru's grandmother though, who told us some historical information.
Umh, I recall wrong.
Probably is in Sector V because you can't investigate something that comes from another world.
Welp, Design the Stasis surely isn't wasted time.

Wait, if Nightmare Kingdom is under Sector IV, then I need to change some of my votes. I'm going to INVESTIGATE the Nightmare Kingdom in Sector IV because I want to MODIFY the Shadow Crystals in the turn after this. I don't want to MODIFY them now because I'm afraid of creating a hazard in our base if things go badly, and we only need to finish this turn without an Incident for everyone to be fully back to normal.

That leaves TRAINing Naoko in Sector IV and TRAINing Touma in Sector VII. They're our two heroes where TRAINing should make a big difference even without a pure success so it would be good to get that done.

Sector IV appears to be tied between two options, Investigate (Glorious Path) & Investigate (Nightmare Kingdom) both have three votes each.

We've got INTERACTs with Naoko and our newest hero next turn, and I've been wondering whether it's a good idea to ask Nanoka about herself like I was planning for Naoko. After Makoto showed up and revealed a bunch of stuff about Nanoka's life that she was trying to deny, it wouldn't surprise me if any question about herself results in a passive-aggressive "Don't you already know?".

Asking about her powers doesn't feel considerate either. My impression would be that Makoto is trying to figure out how to best use Nanoka in combat. It doesn't help that Nanoka had put away her powers until we came along.

I'm probably going to vote for her teammates because it feels we're being concerned about whether she's getting along with everyone ok, but I just wanted to see if anyone has any arguments for the other options.

Feel free to write Omakes if you're so inclined. I don't know if they'd be canon or not, but I'd like to see how people 'read' my characters.
Just as a side note, would you guys like a slightly more in-depth character profile for our cast members so you can Omake them accurately?

Also, please note that the Heroes are going to give you actual responses when you INTERACT with them, so snippy passive-aggressive denials won't happen. I don't like wasting actions like that.

Oh, ok. I remember how before we were worried about asking Fenrir about his family when we INTERACTed with him. Does that mean we can't worsen Makoto's relationship with a hero by choosing a "wrong" choice?

Not in INTERACTS, no. Honestly, I don't have a relationship value system or anything for our Heroes; things are already complex as is. I keep track of when you guys pick certain options that are 'remembered' by the Heroes, but it's not like you can make your Heroes quit by picking something during an Event.

In the past, there were statements that a hero trusts us more after doing an INTERACT action. So there's no gauge for how much a hero trusts us; it's just one of the things that get remembered?

Basically, yes. Like I said, I don't really have a codified system for interactions with the Heroes. Certain choices will trigger 'remembers' or 'trusts you more' responses, which may or may not influence future events and how they interact with Makoto.

Chapter 1: Turn 11 - BP 2
Sector I – Support III, Interact (Naoko, Nanoka)
You put Maya back to work, having her coordinate supplies and research for Sector III while you line up your social calendar this week.
…What? It's almost the exact same options as last week. I'm allowed to cheat.

)( EXTRA EVENT – NAOKO I )(
)( EXTRA EVENT – NANOKA I )(

(Sector III gains +1 to their roll this turn.)

Sector II – Produce – 3, 1, 2 = 5 (FAIL)
Sector II's production facilities hit a snag when one of the machines goes offline. Seems like someone wasn't doing maintenance like they should. You'll have to replace it, which doesn't come cheap.

(-1 Resources)

Sector III – Design (Emergency Stasis System) – 1, 2, 5, +1 = 8 (FLAWED SUCCESS)
Geta-Pi-Theta finalizes the designs for the Emergency Stasis System and presents them to you. He admits, somewhat sheepishly, that building the system will take longer than usual due to the fabrication methods necessary to make it, you know, not dangerous for humans to work on.

(Emergency Stasis System added to BUILD)
(+1 Turn Time to Emergency Stasis System)

Sector IV – Investigate (Nightmare Kingdom) – 6, 4, 6 = 12 (PURE SUCCESS + ABILITY BONUS)
Michelle continues her tireless and flawless work.

REPORT: For many years, the magical threat known as the Nightmare Kingdom has been a relatively minor player in the continued assault on Japan. Hailing from an otherworldly dimension of darkness, the Nightmare Kingdom values immaterial things such as hope, dreams and ambitions the same way humans value things like food and air.

For the most part, agents of the Nightmare Kingdom seek to 'harvest' positive emotions and dreams from humans in order to supply their leader (and themselves) with energy. They strike quickly, often overwhelming large quantities of targets before vanishing back to their home dimension. Their hit-and-run tactics, isolated home base and powerful magical capabilities make them extremely difficult to permanently defeat.

According to the information gathered thus far, it appears that the Nightmare Kingdom has, until recently, been kept in check not only by a variety of magical girls, but also by the presence of more powerful magic-sourced threats. Their recent forays into Tokyo are a troubling sign; they are either emboldened by the lack of active magical girls, or they've gained enough power to be a major threat.

BONUS: The Nightmare Kingdom is overseen by their mysterious queen. The kingdom's major agents seem to be themed after archetypical fantasy 'hero' classes; a rogue, a mage, and a knight.

Sector V – Train (Naoko) – 5, 1, 1, +1 = 7 (FLAWED SUCCESS)
Falter leads Naoko through some meditative exercises designed to help focus her and get better control over her psychic powers. She shows a little bit of improvement, but it's clear she's got a bit more to go.

(+1 EXP to Naoko)

Sector VI – Therapy (Naoko)
Dr. Sessyoin coordinates with Falter to help relieve some of the stress Naoko's been under. That and a few friendly talks over tea help calm her down a bit.

(-2 Stress to Naoko)

Sector VII – Train (Touma) – 4, 4, 1 = 8 (FLAWED SUCCESS)
Despite Touma's misgivings, Odessa takes him to the firearms course and works with him for a while, emphasizing accuracy and precision over fancy gun-fu. Shockingly, it actually seems to take this time around.

(+1 EXP to Touma)
(* LEVEL UP! Touma loses Trait: Destructive *)

Sorry for the shorter post this time around. I'll post the drama phase tomorrow when I'm not feeling so stressed.

Losing Destructive on Touma is great! No more worrying about him failing an attack around civilians! Unfortunately, we're not likely to be able to BUILD the stasis system next turn. I think this is the second time in a row that we've failed the PRODUCE roll, and it cost us RESOURCES.

It sounds like we either need a pure success or a certain number of flawed successes to get rid of Untrained on Naoko. I'll probably vote to TRAIN her in Sector VII next time because I really want that trait gone.

Hello this quest makes me happy in a deep personal way, bc I grew up watching such series and this hits all the nolstagia buttons. Its a joy to read and I'll try to start participating regularly. Also non-binary protag. Always a draw, ngl.

Chapter 1: Turn 11 - DP 1
DRAMA PHASE

EXTRA EVENT 1

Naoko is a little harder to find than some of the other members of your team. You finally locate her in one of the lounges that dot Sector VII, several textbooks spread out on the table around her as she fiddles with her smartphone.

"Hey, Kirigaya-san?"

Your voice causes her to jolt, the smartphone shooting up out of her hand in surprise. She quickly fumbles with it before catching it and putting it into her pocket. "I'm still working on it! Really I- oh, hi ma'am."

You quirk an eyebrow and take a seat perpendicular to her. "Homework?"

Naoko sighs and rubs her forehead. "Yeah. I was going to work on it with Shirai-san, but I think she's busy with something else right now. Figures." She turns to look at you. "Did you need something?"

EXTRA EVENT 2
You manage to track Nanoka down in Sector V. When you find her she's in her Henshin form with a few of the lab techs, clearly practicing her magical skills so they can analyze her magic.

Well, maybe not quite practicing. She seems to be distracted at the moment.

"Oh no, everything's just fine honey," she coos into the phone, her legs crossed in her chair. "Mmhmm… Yes, I know. Look, I'll be home later tonight. There should be plenty of… yes, I already took care of all that. No, you don't have to…"

She glances up as you approach, giving a quick wave to you before holding up a finger. Politely, you wait for her to finish her conversation, which she does with a kiss to the receiver before hanging up.

"So," you say with a faint smirk, "enjoying your new job?"

"Well," she says as she stands up and pops her knuckles, "it beats sitting at home doing chores and watching daytime television. I'm still shaking the rust off right now, though. Been a bit since I used magic for anything other than making ice cubes or playing air conditioner."

"Good to know," you reply. "The techs here giving you any trouble?"

"Not really. Seems you run a tight ship here." She arches her back, then exhales. "So, want something in particular?"

EVENT

You're in your office one afternoon when Nailo comes knocking on your door. You invite him in and let him take a seat, which he does with typical aplomb.

"Not to put too fine a point on things, Miss Hongo," he says as he laces his long fingers together, "but I'm kinda getting bored. I'm fine with telling people where to go and what to do, but I'm itching to do something other than run the production line. There's only so many times I can do maintenance before the grease monkey on my back starts getting antsy, know what I mean?"

You nod (though you wince at the metaphor) and consider what to do with this.

How do you respond?

[ ] CLASSROOM TIME – Well, if he needs something to keep him occupied, then maybe it wouldn't hurt to have him teach the Heroes some practical skills. Sure, it's not glamorous, but it's definately useful.

[ ] GROUP PROJECT – Given Nailo's skillset, he seems like the sort of person that could get Geta and Falter to combine forces. Let them put their heads together and see what they come up with.

[ ] LOAN HIM OUT – If Nailo wants to get in on design work, then maybe it wouldn't hurt to have him work with some of the other Sectors. It would certainly give him something to do, and most of the techs wouldn't mind a fresh pair of eyes.

[ ] SPECIAL PROJECT – If he wants to work on something, then why not give him access to the design system and see what he can put together. It certainly couldn't hurt. Heck, he might actually surprise you.

Hmm, if we wanted to be straightforward, these are straightforward choices. Asking our heroes about themselves is our stock first interaction, and we got Nailo specifically for magic/tech synthesis so the group project is the most sensible option.

Thus, let's do something else.

[ ] [Naoko] (Write-in) Ask her what she thinks of the business, now that she's had the opportunity to dive in head-first.

If anyone is starting to get cold feet about this whole saving-the-world thing it's Naoko, who has spent a lot of time getting knocked around, failing at training (which also involved getting knocked around) and occasionally interposing herself between danger and large groups of trained professionals (which surprisingly did not involve getting knocked around, because it failed). Let's head that off at the pass.

Edit: A wild better option appears!

[ ] [Nanoka] Ask something about her teammates. (what she thinks of them, how they treat her, etc.)

One of the big benefits of having recruited Nanoka (remember, she took us a bit of work to uncover) is that she's the first one that's not a temperamental teenager/twenty-something. Getting a first impression from her on the team that we've built could help us better figure out how to handle them.

[ ] [Nailo] SPECIAL PROJECT – If he wants to work on something, then why not give him access to the design system and see what he can put together. It certainly couldn't hurt. Heck, he might actually surprise you.

MAD SCIENCE. I will admit a hybrid magic/alien project sounds interesting, but giving our engineer free reign to solve problems sounds like it'd be more fun for him.
