It's LIke XCOM, But With More Sparkles -- Henshin Heroes & Heroines HQ Quest!

That scuttles my plan to vote for INTERACTing with both Subaru and Naoko. I'm going to prioritize Subaru because she's the first hero we recruited, and we haven't INTERACTed with her yet. I guess I'll SUPPORT a sector for the second action if nothing else comes up. Maybe Sector VII in hopes that Naoko won't fail again? SUPPORTing the research on Therianthropy also sounds good, since I suspect we'll need to research it more than once.

Chapter 1: Turn 9 - DP2
"Fuyuhiko Hansou is your uncle, right?"

Jin nods. "Unfortunately, yes. Things would be a lot better if he wasn't in our family." He holds up a finger. "And before you ask, no, we don't have any relation to Hattori Hanzō. I've heard enough jokes about that for one lifetime."

You don't comment on the fact that he's also a ninja with a very phonetically similar name. It would be in poor taste. "So, is your entire family made up of ninja, or…"

"There's enough of us that could qualify for that title, yes. My uncle is one of them. Unfortunately, my uncle is also working under Goro Matsuyama."

"The Chairman of the National Public Safety Commission. I've heard rumors…"

Jin shakes his head. "Whatever you've heard, it's actually worse."

You feel a slight chill run up your spine. "How much 'worse' are we talking about?"

"I don't have any solid evidence," he says, folding his hands before him and glancing down at them, "but I've reason to suspect that he and my uncle have ties to a criminal organization that your superiors would classify as a Force of Evil."

Part of you wants to ask if he's sure, but he doesn't seem to be the type to lie about something that severe. And honestly? It wouldn't surprise you to know that at least one of the FoEs is subordinating Japanese politicians. "Who are they?"

"I've only heard bits and pieces, and I'm not exactly a hacker. But several of my… targets have sworn themselves to something called the 'White Venom Society.' Whatever that means, I don't know."

You file that away for later. "Does your family know about what you're doing? Are they safe?"

Jin sighs. "There's… debate about what they should do. There are those, especially the elders, who believe we shouldn't involve ourselves in Japan's politics. There are those who are loyal to my uncle as well. There are a few, like myself, who disagree with my uncle's actions and seek to undermine him."

"If there's anything we-"

"We can handle ourselves," Jin interrupts, then looks back up at you. "But I appreciate the offer."

You slowly turn the conversation towards other matters, though the revelations Jin has provided weigh on you, like a stone in your stomach. One more thing to worry about.

(+1 EXP to Jin)
(Jin trusts you a bit more now.)

As the next week rolls around, you receive a call from Maya on your cellphone, letting you know that she's arrived back in Japan.

"I figured I would call and let you know, ma'am," she says over the phone.

"Thanks for that," you say as you shuffle through some documents. "Did everything go well in New York? Are my masters in the UN pleased with the fact I haven't blown up Tokyo yet?"

"Oh, they're satisfied with your w- wait, what do you mean 'yet?'"

You chuckle. "Just teasing. I'll have a car sent to pick you up at your terminal. Looking forward to having you back, Tanaka-san."

"Glad to-" she pauses mid-sentence. You can hear noise in the background of the phone call.

"Something wrong, Tanaka-san?"

"I… I don't know. There's something going on further down the terminal… it looks like… what on earth?"

"Tanaka-san?" Your eyes widen as you hear what sounds like screaming in the background noise. "Tanaka-san? Maya?! What's going on?"

"I-it's some sort of… group… o-or cult or something. People are panicking. I-I'm going to-"

There's a click, and the line goes dead. You bolt from your chair and run towards central command.

"We've got trouble," you shout as you charge through the doors. "Bring us up to Red Alert status; someone or something's just attacked the airport!"

The lights overhead begin flashing bright red. A klaxon begins to sound as an announcement begins to play over the speakers spread throughout the base.

NOOO!!! Just one more turn, and everyone would have been healed, and we could have researched Therianthropy!

I'm hoping that the White Venom Society is an investigation topic under Sector IV. Now that our hero slots are full with a possible recruit in the wings, I wasn't looking forward to doing a SCAN and hoping that we get an ally instead of a hero.

As the next week rolls around, you receive a call from Maya on your cellphone, letting you know that she's arrived back in Japan.
So, does this mean the Incident is counted as being on the start of the next turn (which means Subaru and Yukimura have healed up) or not? I'm not sure since the latest posts haven't been threadmarked yet.

Well, even if not, we've still got 4 heroes at full strength, so I don't think we'll be that shorthanded.

QM's Note: Turn Progression
@storysmith112358 Threadmarks have been updated. As to healing, turn progression usually goes as follows:
Step 1: Base Phase (Vote)
Step 2: Drama Phase (Vote Resolution and Event/Extra Events)
  • If there's a vote in Step 2, go to Step 3.
  • If there's no vote in Step 2, and no Incident, go to Step 5.
  • If there's no vote in Step 2, and an Incident occurs, go to Step 4.
Step 3: Drama Phase 2 (Vote resolution)
  • If no Incident occurs, go to Step 5.
  • If an Incident occurs, go to Step 4.
Step 4: Incident Phase (Combat)
  • At the end of this Step, return to Step 1.
Step 5: Heroes recover Health and Stress if it's been 2 turns since they were injured/recovered. Then proceed to Step 1.

Can you threadmark this under Informational? Seems like a useful thing to have codified.

Darn. Then I guess we're going into this not at max strength, but like I said, could be worse.

I'm really hoping that we'll find a way to add an additional action to sectors because we're almost certainly going to have more to research after this.

@PurpleProse, is there a way to increase the number of people that can be healed? like another bed in the infirmary maybe so 2 people or more can more healing?

On the topic of extra actions, are there ways we can get extra actions?

@PurpleProse Maybe an action like this?
Expand Infirmary: Can Heal 2 people, but still needs an action
So Sector 6 still needed to spend an action to heal, but with this upgrade it doubles the number of people that can be healed.

That wouldn't be an action, that would be an Enhancement. Which, I should note, are all pre-made.
The entire point of having limited actions is to force you people to prioritize and decide which is more important. I am a somewhat merciful QM, but this game is supposed to have some degree of difficulty. Could we chill on that regard?

Right, Enhancement, sorry many quest just put upgrades as an action. If we can't expand the infirmary then we may need to expand the barracks next turn so that if 1 member is gravely wounded, we have another hero ready to go in their stead.

Rolled a 2 on our Incident die, huh. Well, good thing we focused on healing!

I should note where extra actions are concerned, in exchange for an extra sector 1 action, our Assistant takes an ally slot, isn't always present, has divided loyalties, and has no available upgrades. That should give an idea of how valuable extra actions are in this quest, and if we do get another, we should expect to pay quite a bit for it.

Who said "rolled a 2 on the dice?"
My suspect is that recruiting Hansou we have got an attack from the White Venom Society.

We have 2 ally slots remaining, and I'm not sure what they do. I don't think we would set up a new sector for a new ally so I've been wondering if we could hire assistants for our current sector heads. If that's a possibility, then we'd have to scan for new recruits, hope that the scan succeeds, hope that we get an ally instead of a hero, hope that we can recruit them, and hope that the ally is for a sector that needs help instead of a sector like Sector II. With us having to prioritize our actions, I'd rather research the White Venom Society at this point.

My understanding is that the GM rolls a 6-sided die after each Incident. The result is the number of turns before the next Incident.

Yup, I know.
But I assume that some things could cause an anticipied response. I don't know if Purpleprose just roll for the incident or some of them are the result of some of our action.
Speaking of another thing: do you guys think that we'll get a FoE for each source or we'll get multiple?
We habe BIO (X-meras), Alien (The Combine) and MAGIC (The Kingdom).
We are missing ULTRATECH, PSI and TRAINING and this incident is described "like a Cult".

Maybe we'll have 1 FoE for each source in the early part of the quest and then switch to multiple in the later part? I'm hoping that the FoE are at least limited at the start so that we'll have less to research.

I think the White Venom Society might be TRAINING. Jin's uncle is also a ninja, and Jin didn't mention anything about the members that he killed having superpowers or special tech. Of course, we still don't know everything he knows.

I'm even more convinced to research the Nightmare Kingdom over Shadow Crystal Modification after this. I want to make sure we know as much as possible about our enemies, and we don't know if the Shadow Crystal Modification will even result in something we can use.

Also, IMHO, recruiting more allies is not a bad idea even if they don't give us more action for a particular sector.
If we open a new sector, in a certain way we get more action (but I don't know what a new sector could possibly do. In my opinion the sectors that we have cover all the actions): if we get another sector with a Training Action, then that free us another sector for research/recruit.
Don't know, if we get a sector with the same action of another one, then that's a bonus action.
Even if an ally gives a bonus (a +1, a trait-bonus like our PSI Ally), then it's worth.
But is something that we can do later on.

@PurpleProse
Are multi-source heroes and/or villains possible?
For example: would a BIO villain with various body-grafts who successfully grafts a PSI brain onto themselves for added psychic powers be BIO, PSI, or BIO/PSI?

Chapter 1: Turn 9 - Combat 3 (Opening)
You pace nervously as your bridge bunnies go to work, your mind racing as your feet move. You hadn't expected Haneda Airport to be attacked. If they wanted to do actual damage, the more obvious target would've been Narita International. Why would-

"Sir," one of the bridge bunnies interrupts your thoughts, "Sector Four has accessed local security footage. Outputting to screen three."

"Right," you say as the screen in question swings down to your eye level. "Let's take a look at what we're dealing with."

Several video feeds pop up across the screen. You can see a collection of people clad entirely in white; white jackets, white pants, white shoes, all pristine and clean. They seem to have gathered most of the people that were in the terminal and are standing guard around them. In front, you can see a platinum-blonde man dressed in a white suit with a gold leaf pattern running down the lapels of his jacket and a gold domino mask on his face. He gesticulates as he speaks, then points at several of the white-clad people. They nod in unison, then walk off briskly.

With purpose. Like they're searching for something.

Or someone.

You facepalm. Of course. This wasn't a coincidental attack: you don't believe in coincidences. Maya's flight had diverted to Haneda Airport. They were looking for her.

"Administrator," one of the bridge bunnies pipes up, 'what're your orders?"

You take a deep breath to steady yourself and begin issuing your commands.
