It's LIke XCOM, But With More Sparkles -- Henshin Heroes & Heroines HQ Quest!

Chapter 1: Turn 8 - DP
Sector I – Interact (Momoko), Recruit (Hansou)

Maya continues to prove her worth as your aide as you take a trip up to Nagano to speak with Hikaru's grandmother. On the train ride there, you consider how to handle recruiting Jin Hansou.

)( EXTRA EVENT – MOMOKO )(
)( EXTRA EVENT – RECRUITING JIN HANSOU )(

Sector II – Build (Magic Weapons I)

You give the authorization to put the enchanted weapons into production. If nothing else, it'll give your Strike Teams a few more options when it comes to equipment.

(-4 Resources)
(Magic Weapons I is in production.)

Sector III – Train (Touma) – 3, 3 = 6 (FAIL)

It seems Touma's mind is less on the practice he's doing with Geta's scientists and more on other things. Looks like he's not going to get much out of this practice session.

(No XP for you.)

Sector IV – Investigate (Older Magical Girls) – 3, 5 = 8 (FLAWED SUCCESS + ABILITY BONUS)

Michelle's report arrives promptly and is about as detailed as you've come to expect.

REPORT: Magical girls began to pop up in what the zeitgeist would consider their 'modern' form around the 1960's, though there are reports of costumed magical heroines that predate this. There was a surge in the Magical Girl population in and around the 1980's, followed by a huge curtailing starting near the turn of the millennium. Most Magical Girls retire in their twenties, often passing on their powers and tools to a successor or fading quietly into obscurity. It's rare for a Magical Girl to operate into adulthood; the number of active adult magical girls could probably counted on one hand. With effort, you could likely locate a grown-up magical girl to recruit.

BONUS: From what Michelle can gather, there are two types of Magical Girl; those that possess natural abilities ('Naturals' for lack of a better term) and those whose powers are granted to them ('Created,' in Michelle's clumsy turn of phrase). Almost all Created Magical Girls are accompanied by or mentored by a Mascot, and such Magical Girls make up the vast majority of the population. It seems the Mascots are the ones behind these Created Magical Girls, and they seem to be the ones leading the fight against the MAGIC-oriented Forces of Evil.

(INVESTIGATE topic Updated: Older Magical Girls II)

Sector V – Research (Shadow Crystals) – 5, 6 = 11 (PURE SUCCESS + ABILITY BONUS)

Falter Silk puts the work in, and his report, written long-hand and submitted personally, is rather detailed.

REPORT: The 'shadow crystals' are a form of mystical device. The shell contains a powerful enchantment that infiltrates the minds of unconscious humans and transforms positive emotions and memories into magical energy, which the crystal absorbs and stores for later use. Such a process is naturally harmful to the victim, as stripping them of all positive memories and emotions would leave them a shell of a person filled with nothing but despair. The enchantments used in the crystal's construction suggests highly advanced magecraft, though the magical 'coding' used doesn't match any of the systems Falter is familiar with.

BONUS: Falter suggests in his report that, given time and resources, it should be possible for him to rework the enchantment and repurpose the crystals for UNSEAT's use. He leaves that decision up to you, though the idea of modifying the magic seems to excite him greatly.

How do you respond?

[ ] DO IT – The idea of hitting the Nightmare Kingdom with their own magic does appeal to you, and your side needs all the help they can get. Let the wizard work.

[ ] TOO DANGEROUS – While the idea is tempting, you're concerned that this may come back to bite you and your Heroes in the future. Best to err on the side of caution with magic.

Sector VI – Heal (Sessyoin)

Seems like Sessyoin's finally gotten over her pneumonia and has come out of quarantine. Once she meets Naoko, she's decidedly excited. It seems that having more Psychics around is bringing out the good in the good doctor.

(Status upgraded to Active)
(ABILITY UNLOCK – Therapist's Insight – Gain Additional information when using the RESEARCH Action.)

Sector VII – Train (Hikaru) – 6, 5 = 11 (PURE SUCCESS)

Seems that having Odessa throw him around is actually working. Hikaru's starting to improve his hand-to-hand skills, enough that he's actually confident he can use them effectively in battle. His confidence is actually starting to grow now, enough that people seem to feel lighter-hearted around him.

(+1 EXP to Hikaru)
(* HIKARU LEVEL UP! Ability Unlocked: Armor of Optimism *)
(Hikaru gains the Trait: Fighter (Unarmed))

TURN 8 – DRAMA PHASE

EXTRA EVENT 1

You take the train out to Nagano along with Hikaru. While having Hikaru accompany you seems a bit odd, you eventually decide that it would be a bit rude to deny him a chance to visit his grandmother. Besides, there's no harm in having some back up in case something happens.

Momoko Sano lives in a small house just on the outskirts of the city. You're not sure what to expect when you meet her, but she's all smiles when she opens the door. She's in her early seventies, with her pale gray hair pulled back in a bun behind her head. Her face is well-lined, with a surfeit of laugh-lines and crow's feet around her gray eyes. She's dressed in a pale green kimono and obi, and she walks and moves with care and precision. She greets Hikaru with affection and welcomes you both into her house.

You watch the two of them interact quietly, feeling like an intruder in this family dynamic. It's quite apparent that Hikaru adores his grandmother, and he quickly springs to help her even when she waves him off. Hikaru explains your presence here truthfully when Momoko asks, and you can't help but feel like you're being analyzed by Momoko's gaze when Hikaru isn't looking.

Eventually, Momoko asks Hikaru to go run some errands for her at the local store, leaving you and her alone.

"Have to admit," you say as you nibble on a rice cracker, "I'm a bit jealous of Hikaru's relationship with you."

"Oho, you don't have to be," Momoko replies with a wave of her hand. "I'm glad my grandchild's gotten a purpose in life now."

"Yeah, about that." You set the rice cracker aside and rest your hands on the table, fingers laced together. "I may have heard that you used to be a magical girl."

Momoko smiles faintly. "That was a long time ago, dear. As much as I'd like to, I'm not exactly in the shape to fight bad guys these days. I'm enjoying my retirement."

"Fair enough. Do you mind if I ask you a few questions, though?"

"Of course not." Momoko lifts her cup of green tea and blows on it gently. "What would you like to know?"

EXTRA EVENT 2

You lie in wait for your target on the steps of the Hanazono Shrine in Shinjuku. Businessmen and tourists pass by, going up and down the temple steps to make offerings to Inari Okami. It's also, apparently, one of the places Jin shows up to regularly. At least, regularly enough that you can corner him here.

Finally, however, you spot your quarry and follow him into the Shrine proper.

Jin Hansou is in his early twenties. He's a severe-looking young man with narrow, dark eyes , a long chin and slicked-back black hair. He wears a pair of black-rimmed glasses and is dressed in a simple black suit and tie, just like every other salaryman that you've seen passing by. That much is probably intentional; if you hadn't known what to look for, he probably would have faded into the crowd. An unassuming black briefcase dangles from his left hand. (You can see tension in every inch of his frame like he's about to take off in a sprint.)

"Excuse me," you say as you catch up to him. "Hansou-san?"

"Sorry, ma'am," he replies formally, not turning to face you. "You must have me mistaken for someone else."

"I don't think I do, Hansou-san."

He continues walking briskly, forcing you to match his pace. "As I said, I think you have me mistaken for someone else. If you'll excuse-"

"I don't work for Fuyuhiko, if that's what you're worried about."

"Neither do I. My name is Takeru Yamada."

"I'm sure it is. I-"

He bolts, vanishing around the side of the shrine. You follow as quickly as you can, slowly coming to a halt as you round the edge of the shrine and find nobody there.

You look around… only for a pair of hands to yank you into the shadows and press you up against the wall. Jin is glaring at you, his eyes hard and his teeth clenched.

"What the hell do you want?" His whisper comes out in a hiss of breath.

"To recruit you," you whisper back. "I'd think that's pretty obvious."

"That's a terrible idea," he replies. "If my uncle finds out that I'm working with you, there'll be no end of trouble for you. I'm pretty sure I'm already under observation from his agents. Or at least, they're trying to observe me."

"Trying, eh?" You take a quick glance around. "

Despite his intensity, he smirks. "Look, I get that you're trying to do good. And I know you'd be happy for me to work with you. But I'm more trouble than I'm worth. Do you really want me on your side?"

How do you respond?

[ ] RECRUIT – If he's got information on the SAD, then it'd be worth it to have him on your side even if it puts you on their shit-list.

[ ] LEAVE – If what he says is true, then recruiting him might not be the wisest move. Best not to poke the tiger more than necessary.

EVENT!

As you're working in your office, Maya approaches your desk. "Um, Administrator?"

"Hmm?" You glance up at her. "Yes, Tanaka-san?"

"I just wanted to let you know that next week I'm going to have to report in at the UN about your progress. They want to speak with me personally."

"Oh…" Right. She wasn't just your aide; she was also here to observe you directly. You'd almost forgotten about that.

"I'm really sorry," she bows quickly. "I shouldn't be gone very long. Likely a week at the most."

"Well, I suppose it can't be helped." You sigh and lean back in your chair. "Just out of curiosity, what's your current opinion on my progress?"

Maya blushes. "I'm really not supposed to say, Hongo-san."

"Fair enough. I have to say, I'm going to miss having you around."

She giggles. "You make it sound like I'm going to disappear forever, Hongo-san."

"I'd certainly hope not." You turn back to your monitor. "Have a safe flight, Tanaka-san."

(Next Turn, you lose access to Maya's Ability)

So, next turn we'll lose one action.
Seems fine to me v.v
@PurpleProse Jin is a Hero or a Ally? Seems more the latter to me.
[X] DO IT – The idea of hitting the Nightmare Kingdom with their own magic does appeal to you, and your side needs all the help they can get. Let the wizard work.

[X] RECRUIT – If he's got information on the SAD, then it'd be worth it to have him on your side even if it puts you on their shit-list.

I'm not ready to vote yet because I want to discuss the options first. I'd like to vote for working on the crystals because the Nightmare Kingdom is going to keep using them anyway, but I'm trying to figure out the downsides. Maybe if SAD finds out, they spin it to sound like we're preying on civilians for magical power? Also, I guess there's a chance that the Nightmare Kingdom might find a way to co-op the crystals.

Asking Makoto about the Nightmare Kingdom is a must. I'd also like to ask about how she got her powers. I'm not sure about the last question though. Do we need any more magical girls, either as allies or heroes? Maybe we should ask about why she chose Hikaru so that we can reassure him if he ever doubts himself. Or does someone have a good suggestion?

One concern I have about Jin is that his name is associated with "eliminating certain individuals in charge of their shell companies." Does that mean he's killing people?

I would err against modifying the Crystal's, myself. A weapon that drains emotions and leaves a depressed shell of a person behind sounds very bad for PR, even besides any moral objections I have.

I do wonder if Jin is right and he would be more trouble than he's worth. If we follow the Older Magical Girl research line we might be able to find another hero to recruit pretty easily, who could have less baggage. At the same time Jin's information on SAD could be very valuable. I'm leaning towards recruiting him, but I'm definitely open to changing my mind on that.

Yeah, I'm not really interested in using the Crystals against the Nightmare Kingdom like they're used against people, but I wouldn't mind studying them some more, and modifying them sounds like the best way to really understand them.

I'm also curious as to how the modified Crystals would work. Would it only drain the positive emotions of the villain, and leave the minions alone? Can we reverse the flow to drain the minions instead of healing them? Or can we set up a jammer with the modified Crystals?

Maybe we can vote to modify the Crystals and then not use them if we don't like the result. Though modifying the Crystals will probably take at least 2 more actions to design and create the modifications and then some resources on top of that so it would be a waste to not use the result. It would probably count towards the 3 magical items needed to unlock Falter and Nailo's abitilies though.

We can just SCAN for another hero, and I'm a bit confused as to whether Jin is a potential hero or ally anyway. I want the information on SAD, but I'm a bit worried about working with him if he's a murderer.

Using the crystals in their current configuration is obviously a no-go, but being able to alter their enchantments sounds like it could give us a very positive tool in our toolbox.

-[X] There was a huge drop in the number of magical girls around the turn of the century (Re: Investigate Older Magical Girls 1). Do you know what happened?

SAD is already acting against us, but a misinformation campaign is probably adorable compared to what they'll do if we bring Jin on board. I don't particularly like wasting an action like this, but we have walked away with more information than we had before, which is not nothing.

[X] SUGGESTION
-[X] Agree to leave Jin alone if he gives you something you can use.

Edit: Oh, speaking of, weren't we supposed to get some information from our friendly heroic aliens this turn in exchange for handing over the pirate, or did that already happen?

I want to see what modifying the Crystals creates, and if it's objectionable, then we can just not use it. I think it should still count towards the 3 magical items needed to unlock abilities.

The first 2 questions are things that we can ONLY learn from Makoto and not through research while the whole reason we sought her out was to learn about the Nightmare Kingdom. I'm not sure what the appeal for learning about other magical girls is since we already have 1 magical girl and only 1 free hero slot.

While I want to learn more about what the SAD is up to, I'm not sure we're ready to take them on yet. Also, I'm worried about whether Jin is a murderer.

Not sure what to do with Jin Hansou right now, I'll edit my vote for that in later.

I guess that depends on whether you feel the best advantage could be had by complete information, or by saving time. How she picked her successor, for instance, is definitely something best heard from her, but how useful is it to us? We know he was a good kid going through a rough patch and his grandma gave him a calling. If that isn't the whole story (and I'm reasonably sure it isn't), how much do we really need to know, compared to more immediate concerns like what we're up against and what we can marshal to fight that?

Incident timers and villain escalation being what they are, it seems like our time is the most precious resource. Even if we could research the information on our own, I don't mind working with incomplete information if it'll knock out several research topics in one go.

Do we even have to ask about how Granny Momoko got her powers? It's said Hikaru inherited it, and the power skipped one generation, so it means its just passed down the family as opposed to being given by a magical mascot.

Knowledge is power, but so is knowing when to use it. If we can take alien tech and biological monsters and repurpose them for our side, we can deal with a little magical know-how. Besides, as said, if we find its only practical uses morally unpalatable, then we can just not use them and redirect our knowledge to develop countermeasures instead.

We came here to find out about a singular topic - the Nightmare Kingdom. Let's focus on that. The latter two could be useful in case we want to focus on finding more of said heroes later on.

We're already on SAD's shitlist, and if they decide to escalate, I say just let the internet-destroying bot named Michelle go to town on them. Besides, more intel is always appreciated.
And to Hansou's point that he's more trouble than he's worth, we have on our side a refugee from a magical world, a alien with maverick ideals, a gynoid designed to cripple humanity's communication, a bio-engineered werewolf from a shady project, a phantom thief, and we're a psychic detective. What's a little more trouble compared to all that?

The INTERACT actions have the Administrator ask the heroes about themselves to help build a rapport between the Administrator and the heroes which results in various benefits, sometimes including XP and sometimes just having the hero remember the interaction. Therefore, learning about our heroes pays off. Also, the GM wouldn't have included these options if they weren't useful somehow.

I think that why Makoto picked Hikaru gives us a better understanding of Hikaru, including some things he probably wouldn't tell us about until he trusted us a lot more. She might also know more about Hikaru than he understands about himself at this point. I have to wonder whether she considered the possible gender issues when choosing her grandson to become a magical girl.

Asking about how Granny Makoto got her powers lets us figure out better how said powers work and what the implications are. Did she get her power from a magical accident that altered her chromosomes? Is she a reincarnation of some ancient magical figure? Maybe the Nightmare Kingdom experimented on her. If she got her powers completely "naturally", then is there a way that we can figure out how to track down other "natural" magical heroes?

The answers to these questions can only be learned from Makoto and maybe Hikaru, though he's more likely for the second question than the first. On the other hand, if we want more magical girls, we can just have Michelle research magical girls and/or do a SCAN. We might not even be able to recruit any other heroes, depending on if Jin Hansou takes up a HERO slot. Also, I don't even want to recruit another magical girl because I'm hoping for more variety for the SOURCES of our HEROES and ALLIES. Currently, two of our ALLIES are MAGIC, and we have a HERO for every SOURCE except ALIEN.

Edit: The Codex says about Hikaru that "he doesn't fully understand the how and why of his powers" so asking him probably won't work.

I would prefer not to work on the crystals, but since the vote is leaning that way I'll just hope that Falter can figure out how to make them less husk-inducing.

Hoping that this third question might lead to more Allies, since I suspect we'll be full up on heroes soon. I'm not voting to ask about the drop in numbers of magical girls because I suspect that it will be something simple like "There were less FoEs to fight and we didnt need to recruit as many new girls when the current ones aged out."

[X] RECRUIT – If he's got information on the SAD, then it'd be worth it to have him on your side even if it puts you on their shit-list.
Definitely still possible to change my mind on this, but I'm more worried about the consequences of pissing of SAD more than I am about Jin possibly being a murderer. Heck, having a murderer on the team for Okami to compare himself to and say "oh well I'm not as bad as this guy," might be good for his mental health :p

Sector I – Interact (Momoko), Recruit (Hansou)

Maya continues to prove her worth as your aide as you take a trip up to Nagano to speak with Hikaru's grandmother. On the train ride there, you consider how to handle recruiting Jin Hansou.
It looks like the latest update was never threadmarked.

I wonder what the UN observer is going to report and how it's going to affect us. While we've done well by my standards, I'm not sure what the UN wants.

Also, we're down to one Administrator action next update. If nothing major comes up, would you all be willing to vote to INTERACT with Subaru? I don't think we've INTERACTed with her yet, despite her being the first HERO we recruited. It would also be a way of checking up on her after she took so many hits during the last battle, and it's a possible source of XP if training her fails.

I think that my major goals for the next phase are to INTERACT with Subaru, HEAL Subaru (which should get her back to full health and no stress at the end of the round), and TRAIN Subaru and Naoko. I'm hoping to get Subaru and Naoko leveled up, especially since Subaru should get a new ability out of it.

Sorry for the double-post, but it's been over 3 hours without anyone else posting. It occurred to me that we probably want to design and build the stunner attachment as soon as possible. After all, one classic villain tactic is to minionize innocent civilians so having a way to take them out nonlethally when that happens would be nice.

Also, we might be able to create prisons that can hold really dangerous villains by researching the stasis pods, but that's not as high priority as the stunner attachment for me.

Finally, we might need to INTERACT with Jin Hansou to learn about SAD. If that's the case, then I'll probably vote for it instead of INTERACTing with Subaru. We have to prepare for SAD's counterattack after all.

I keep going back and forth over whether I want an Incident to occur soon. I'm definitely hoping that one doesn't happen in the next cycle because we still have injured and stressed heroes, but Incidents tend to result in more XP than we'd normally get. On the other hand, the longer between Incidents, the more time we have to research, design, investigate, interact, etc.

I guess my concern is whether chapters are based on the amount of time that passes or the number of Incidents that occur. If it's based on the passage of time, then we need enough Incidents to level up the heroes while still doing other tasks to keep up. If it's based on the number of Incidents, then the more time between Incidents we get, the better off we are.

Chapter 1: Turn 9 - BP
You give Falter the go-ahead to tinker with the Shadow Crystals. It's hard not to get caught up in the wizard's enthusiasm for his work.

What can you tell me about the Nightmare Kingdom?

Momoko seems pensive when you ask this question. "The Nightmare Kingdom. Ugh. That brings back memories. Despite the stories I told Hikaru they're not to be trifled with lightly. As far as I know, the Nightmare Kingdom was just one of several magical threats that we magical girls had to deal with. They seek out large clusters of people, send out their troops and try to drain people of their hopes and dreams just so they can feed them to their queen."

She pauses and strokes her chin. "Though I have to admit, if you're dealing with them in Tokyo, then things have changed. The Nightmare Kingdom was one of the smaller threats when I was active. There were other things active in Tokyo. Worse things. If they're active in Tokyo, then they've either increased in strength or someone took care of whoever was attacking Tokyo…"

How did you gain your powers?

"'Gain' might be the wrong term," she answers before she takes a sip of her tea. "I think it might have something to do with our family line. I remember my mother telling me stories of what she was doing when she was a little girl. Of course, she didn't have to fight monsters like I did, but she was capable of extraordinary feats. The Star of Hope, the jewel that Hikaru now has, was also passed down through our family. It seems to react with whatever magic we possess."

"So, theoretically, you could still transform?"

Momoko considers this. "Possibly. Honestly though, I'm a bit too old for that kind of thing these days. As much as I'd love to jump right back into fighting evil, I think it'd be best if I leave that to Hikaru."

Do you know any other magical girls?

Momoko actually looks a bit sad at that. "Unfortunately, most of my peers are either retired or dead. One of them died a few weeks back. Haruka-chan. Sweet lady. Had three grandchildren. Mean mahjong player, though."

She takes another drink of tea, then hmms. "Actually, come to think of it, there might be someone… hold on." She climbs to her feet and walks into another room. There's a rustling and a spate of quiet muttering before she returns and hands you a business card.

"Here. There's a young woman who I think is still active in Tokyo. You should look her up. Her name is Nanoka Takamura."

It's about that time that Hikaru returns from his errands. The rest of the trip goes well, and Momoko invites you to return some time whenever you have a chance.

(Nanoka Takamura added to Recruit)

You quirk an eyebrow at Jin. "So are you done with the bravado, or should I just let you keep going?"

Jin's eyes narrow. "I'm not-"

"Spare me." You reach up and carefully pry his hands off of your jacket. "No offense, but I'm not the least bit scared of Fuyuhiko Hansou, and I'm definitely not scared of you."

"You should be, on both accounts." Jin dusts his hands off. "You wouldn't be the last person I've had to kill."

"You wouldn't," you counter. "One, you don't seem to be the kind that murders people in broad daylight. Two, that would just draw attention to yourself…"

Jin quickly snaps a punch at you. You block the strike with your forearm and return the favor with your fist. There's a satisfying noise of flesh-on-flesh as you bloody his nose.

"And three," you say as you shake your hand, "I'm pretty sure you wouldn't walk away from the attempt unscathed."

He snorts and pulls out a tissue, pressing it under his nose. "Don't say I didn't warn you."

"Consider the warning noted. Now let's go."

The world shifts into a shadowy stage. Leaves rustle overhead as Jin slowly walks down a road in a shadowy, bamboo-strewn forest. He pauses, adjusts his tie, and looks into the camera as the music begins.

"Ninpo," he says as he yanks off his tie. "Swift Change."

There's a rustle of leaves as he vanishes from view. The camera swings left, then right and begins following him. He's a mere shadow darting through the bamboo, leaves rustling in his wake. Light catches briefly on parts of his outfit, glinting on forearm guards and shin guards and pale gray keikogi and pants.

There's a rush as the camera swings past a cliff, which Jin leaps off of, leaving him silhouetted in moonlight. There's a glint of ghostly green light from the half facemask he's wearing, as LEDs hidden underneath light up to obscure the color of his face and hair under his hood. Metal rasps as he produces a sickle from his sleeve, a long length of chain rattling free and swirling around him like smoke.

Fallen leaves spray up as he lands from his leap. He slowly stands and turns to face the camera, looking less like a person and more like a ghost.

"Obakemaru," he announces in a distorted voice, "going forth."

He leaps again, leaving naught but swirling leaves and dust in his wake.
