Indestructible Spirit (Kancolle AU)

I liked it, because here both sides in this are fleshed out and actual characters.

You could actually say this entire story is about an AU twin.

I do agree that usually the AU twin fails because the twin isn't an actual character, it's just a caricature thrown up to make the story arc work. Without an actual background the twin is as much an inanimate prop as it is a character.

Which is why it works here. This entire story is about Indestructible, she is an actual character and this omake is about her meeting another actual character Kongo.

So this works because it is Indestructible meeting Kongo, it's not Kongo meeting 'evil-twin' Kongo, or 'insert other trope' Kongo.

Looking forward to more (either of the story or the omake, both work).

Sudden Kongou Interrupt!

Hey, since Kongou and Indestructible have the same hair except for the same hair with the exception of the buns, does that mean Indy has the ahoge as well? Kongou needs it because it pinpoints TTK, but I suppose Indy could repurpose it to locate someone or something else.

Also, I foresee bongo jokes.

Just had a thought - if Britain kept 6-7 battlecruisers, what does that mean for other nations? Looks at Amagi and Lexington classes.

Without a very different Washington Treaty, nothing at all - they're both 16" designs and the Treaty seriously limited the most powerful battleships/battlecruisers almost as much as it did the overall numbers.

The ratio was 3:3:2 (with Hood classed as the equivalent of the Nagatos and Colorados.) Britain got to build two Nelsons to match the numbers. Add extra 16" ships to the USA and Japan and Britain has to be allowed to build more Nelsons. And neither the USA nor Japan actually want the British to be allowed to do this as, for all their shortcomings, the Nelsons are a post-Jutland design, something none of the Japanese (Amagis and Tosas) or the American (Colorados, Lexingtons and South Dakotas) ships are.

Even with heavier guns the Indestructible's aren't going to be rated the equivalent of the Hood in treaty terms

Why do you assume Indy would have an ahoge?

Also, with regards to the pictures: yoink.

So, in terms of appearance, I take it Indestructible is entirely Japanese* (although her mannerisms are entirely British, whereas Kongou only has a couple of British mannerisms) while her British-end sisters are mostly Anglo-Saxon with some Japanese features?

*Save for the hair color, but that seems to be a shipgirl thing.

Apparently I need to look up the word assume since it now means something other than what I think it means.

Still, I'm interested in all the things that can be done with an ahoge that is possibly made of steel.

EDIT: Nope, Assume means what I thought it meant according to dictionary.com

Most likely, the Indestructible trio replace at least a couple of the Iron Dukes that Britain historically retained after the Washington Treaty. What I'm wondering about is how the Royal Navy retained them under the London Treaty, and even without the London drawdowns, the British only have enough spare tonnage for two of them after the rebuilds of the Queen Elizabeth class and Renown. Perhaps letting go of some of the Rs?

I believe they dropped the revenge class.

On mobile or I'd dig up the relevant quote, but yes. Indy and sisters survived at the cost of a couple R-class girls.

Hey all. Quick snippet idea that came to me a while ago that is somewhat related to my previous idea (thanks for picking up the idea @Skywalker_T-65 ). That snip was about Indy going to the Prime!KanColle verse… but what if Kongo went to the world Indy came from?

More to the point… what if she was summoned in Indy's place?

Admiral Smith and Hood's eyes widened considerably when the haggard face of one Admiral Daiki Takeda appeared before them. The dark bangs around his haunted eyes, the state of his rumpled uniform, the almost imperceptible shuddering of his shoulders… even though the limitations of the video call, it was clear to Smith and Hood that this was a man nearing the end of his rope.

"Smith." Takeda greeted without preamble.

"Good lord, Takeda," Smith breathed in horror, "What happened to you? Is everything alright? Do you need reinforcements?"

It was well known to Smith that Japan was strapped for manpower, or ship girl power as the case was, however he had no idea that things for his friend were this bad. Even though was quite impractical for the Royal Navy to send help to the Japanese considering their geographic separation, Smith couldn't look at Takeda in such a state and not offer it.

He need not have bothered though, as Takeda's reaction to this offer was quite unexpected.

"No, no, no," Takeda answered all too quickly, his eyes turning wild and panicked. "I'm quite happy with the number of British ships here in Japan, thank you. No need to send more of your tea loving psycho-I mean, your tea loving girls over. The offer is generous, but no thank you."

"Well, that is odd. I thought he was always asking for reinforcements," Hood whispered to Smith under her breath before Smith discretely shushed her.

"Long story short, we accidentally summoned Indestructible." Takeda said abruptly, cutting right to the chase.

"What?" Smith and Hood gaped.

"Tried summoning Tosa and Amagi, but ended up getting her instead. Not sure how that works, but that's the summoning ritual for you," Takeda babbled almost incoherently, "Tried getting Tosa and Amaga and we ended up getting Kongo. What are the odds huh?"

What are the odds indeed?

HMS Indestructible, one of the Royal Navy's most important warships, now in Japan… one that Smith knew that many of his ship girls, including Hood, had been waiting eagerly to return. That Indestructible had appeared in Japan was unexpected, but a possibility he should have foreseen in retrospect since Indestructible was originally intended to be a Japanese ship.

Looks like there will still things that mankind did not understand about the summoning ritual.

"This is… rather unexpected," Smith said after a moment. "So…"

"So I would appreciate it if you could send someone over to pick her up," Takeda interjected quickly before Smith could come up with any other alternative. "Preferably soon. She's been a… experience to have on the base and all, but I'm afraid I don't really have the… capabilities to handle a ship like her right now. Please send someone to retrieve Indestructible, post haste."

Smith and Hood shared a surprised look. This was a rather pleasant surprise.

"Not that I am complaining," Hood whispered, "But I honestly expected the Japanese to put up more resistance since the politicians would have interfered."

"Yes, but we best not to look a gift horse in the mouth," Smith privately agreed with Hood, but knew that taking advantage of Takeda's offer while it lasted was imperative. Smith turned back to the Japanese admiral and regarded the man with a smile. "Takeda, thank you very much for being so cooperative. I will send someone to Japan right away to help escort Indestructible back to Britain."

Takeda's face lit up like Christmas had come early.

"Thank you, Smith!" Takeda nodded happily a smile of relief now on his weathered features, the news seemingly causing a weight to be lifted from the man's shoulders. "Do you have any idea when your people will be able to retrieve Kong-Indestructible?"

Smitch quickly glanced to his secretary ship for help, whereupon Hood folded her arms and did a mental calculation.

"If our representatives go by Gibraltar and the Indian sea…" Hood murmured as she crunched the numbers, eventually arriving at a figure.

One that was, apparently, not fast enough for Admiral Takeda.

"…are you sure you can't get here sooner?" Takeda asked, his relieved smile faltering. "Not that I am complaining, but I would be happy to charter a transport plane for you if that would speed your journey up."

"Really?" Smith raised an eyebrow.

"The sooner the better." Takeda nodded. "I would appreciate it if we settled this quickly before Kong-Indestructible gives her sisters more ideas."

Smith and Hood shared another look, this time one of pure confusion.

"Takeda," Smith began, "is there something you are not telling…"

Whatever Smith had been about to say was interrupted by the sound of Takeda's door slamming open on the other end of the video call, eliciting a panicked cry from the man himself.

"TEIII-TOOO-KUUU!"

"OH SH-" Takeda exclaimed as he started to rise in his seat.

"BURNING… LOVE!"

The last thing Smith and Hood was before the connection went dark was four ship girl shaped white objects colliding with the aged sailor, knocking him out of view and causing the connection to end.

"What was that?" Smith shook his head, trying to make sense of what he had just seen.

He wouldn't get his answer for some time.

Any thoughts and comments about this? Keep in mind this was from Smith and Hood's POV. I'm sure there were 'stuff' happening over on Takeda's end that would be equally interesting to chat about at some point.

Or, what if Prime!Kongo had been summoned in Britian at the same time Indestructible was summoned in Japan?

Something completely out of left field, but it got a chuckle out of me and I thought it was worth sharing.

I play a WWI Jutland-style grand strategy game where you play as a grand admiral, and you can design derpy ships and pit them against one another for presitge and territory. In my recent Germany game, I decided to emulate the design of the Kongou-class BCs (or, the Indestructible-class, since I'm in this thread), and let the random ship namer choose a name for the slightly-slower and lighter clone of Indy. The end result?

Even the game ships it. :V

Okay, that's hilarious.

And also reminds me I need to get back to Rule the Waves at some point. Got to somehow make a proper Kaiserliche Marine!
