In Thunder's Echo (Legend of the Five Rings Quest)

I'm not saying that we should utterly minimize contact with him or anything of the sort. I'm saying that we should moderate it. From what I remember, we already engaged him fairly extensively during the visit to the Magistrates, which was only one or two weeks ago, so I don't think it's really necessary to try and see if we can do him another favor, yet.
Admittedly, just interacting with him doesn't necessarily automatically mean another favor he'd ask of us, but still.

Also, just because Mariko's dead doesn't mean he can't use her; I'm not discounting the possibility that he might wait until we're in conversation with him and someone else - possibly a Lion, though possibly also some other Clan very likely to dislike the Crane, such as the Crab - and steer the conversation towards the duel and her death, in order to provoke conflict between us and the other conversation partner.

Then again, maybe I'm overthinking this, and Rokugani customs wouldn't allow for something like that; not sure.
Sure, they'd allow for it. The Rokugani rules of social interaction were pretty much designed by people like the Otomo. There are a few blocks, though. The first is that it's very hard to do that in a way we can't slide out of. Without a potentially offendable Crane around to serve as the anvil to that particular hammer, it's really quite difficult to make it stick. Even if she were around, there are conversational dodges available, and with a 7k4, we're really very good at employing them. Also, that's the sort of thing he'd do as a drive-by. That's actually *more* likely if we leave him alone than if we approach him.

As for timing... the Display of Steel was the 4th day of the Boar. The River of Stars was the 9th day. As far as I can tell, we went to the magistrates on the 6th day. Winding River Banquet was the 15th day - a bot over a week later, and Festival of Lights is the 23rd. Dropping by on or about the 20th would mean that we hadn't seen him for two weeks. That seems a reasonable time to contact him again... and why wouldn't we want to rack up the favors. That's kind of the point. Otomo Kairyu is a mid-ranking bureaucrat in the Imperial bureaucracy. The more we can do for him - the more favor we can rack up - the better. When we have terribly important and time-critical things happening then yes, we want to lay off the man, but once every couple of weeks is by no means too much. I'd love to have done him a favor every couple of weeks for our entire stay here. That's a healthy chunk of influence that's almost sure to deploy on our behalf.

[X] Plan primemountain
16th Day of the Boar(Morning):
-Report in to Bayushi-sama. Convey our success in delivering the information to Genji as well as the events of the evening. Mention our plans for the following week to her so she can object or advise us if she finds it prudent. Check if she is interested in us making any trade deals with the Crab, or just gathering information about their needs.

16th Day of the Boar(Afternoon/Evening):
-Ask not to be disturbed while we try and learn more about the forger. Use our Investigation and Calligraphy skills to see if we cannot find out something about the forger themselves. Spend a Void point on it.

17th Day of the Boar(Morning):
-Train our Kata. Extend an invitation to any Matsu interested for a friendly spar. Use our good ability for figuring people out to make sure(as much as we can) whomever we pick is friendly or at least neutral.

17th Day of the Boar(Afternoon/Evening):
-Speak with Pale-Oak. Have him help us review for our meeting with the Crab. What the Crab have, and what they need. What the Scorpion have and what we need. See if he has any other news for us.

18th Day of the Boar(Morning):
-Ask Kaiu Hiraki to join you for a meal. Be companionable and see if you cannot discuss the differences in Architecture between Shiro Matsu other places he has seen. See if there exists interest in arranging a meeting between us and Yasuki Miya.

18th Day of the Boar(Afternoon/Evening):
-See if Daidoji Chen is open for some games of Go. Clear with Bayushi-sama on the 16th what we are allowed to tell him.

19th Day of the Boar(Morning):
-Train our Kata. Invite Hida Kinra for a friendly spar if he is not otherwise occupied.

19th Day of the Boar(Afternoon/Evening):
-Invite Asako Tani for some tea. Preferably in a teahouse. And not the same one you visited previously. Enjoy the company of someone with interests as wide as ours.

20th Day of the Boar(Morning):
-Seek out Yogo Hanzo. See if he needs anything from us and if he could add the fire ward to our quarters if he has not already. Clear it with Bayushi on the 16th.

20th Day of the Boar(Afternoon/Evening):
-Have that meeting with Yasuki Miya. See what the Crab need and what they are prepared to offer. Agree to no deals in the single session. But if cleared with Bayushi on the 16th we might lay down some groundwork for future deals.

21th Day of the Boar(Morning):
-Train our Kata. See if Bayushi-sama has the time and the inclination to join us. Her instruction so far has been most enlightening.

21th Day of the Boar(Afternoon/Evening):
-Practice our Calligraphy. Make ourselves available if someone is trying to meet with us(Like say, the Wren, if she has something for us)

22th Day of the Boar(Morning):
-Practice our Running. The Festival of Lights is tomorrow and we do not want to disgrace ourselves.

22th Day of the Boar(Afternoon/Evening):
-Find and investigate the field where the Festival of Lights will be. Knowing the terrain and the obstacles will be helpful in the competition and will help us better prepare.

23th Day of the Boar – Festival of Lights(Morning):
-Make our preparations for the festival of Lights.

23th Day of the Boar – Festival of Lights (Afternoon/Evening):
-Compete in the festival.

Questions and advice are welcome.

I will note that adding the Ward of Purity to your quarters is a risky strategy. Hanzo has told you it is only useful against Tainted individuals, and adding something like that to your quarters while in another Clan's territory basically declares that you expect to be attacked by agents of the Shadowlands and don't think the existing defenses will be enough to protect you.

There are a fair number of Matsu who would see that as a serious insult.

Huh. I had hoped we could wave it off as standard Scorpion Paranoia, but I guess not. Maybe we can arrange for him to carry one of those pre-preapared paper talismans at all times? Would that be an insult?

Also, if I am not mistaken, we already exausted what we could get from the letter by ourselves.

If we want more we have two options:

First, show it to Pale Oak, as he probably have the necessary skills to study it (doable without breaking our orders)

Second is to show it to the Ikoma. (Going against our Lord's order)

I woul also change a few other things.

Maybe do some more training actions (three or four) for running and survival and change the action with Pale Oak (we will probably need two) to change the scope from assets that could be object of wagers to comercial interests primarily with the Crane, but also with the Phoenix.

I would cut the Kata training as one action is not that important and the action could be better used for other things.

See, that is not what I got. When we went for the investigate action, we asked the question:
"Is this letter a forgery?" That is all. Determining that did not involve us burning it. I suppose we might not find anything new, but is it really that big an ask to make the attempt? It costs us one afternoon and might tell us something usefull.

Kata training is important. It should help with our main mission, make the Matsu happy with us. They praise skill in battle. Taking training seriously will be seen as a plus. Also Bastur? While we might get along OK with the Local Crane, the Crane and the Scorpion are rivals at court at large. I am not sure how much they would want to trade with us, and the Phenix lands are on the other side of the Lion from us. Not sure what it would be worth to trade with them.

Also, where did you get the idea that I was looking for wagers? I was looking for commercial intrests between ourselves and the Crab, our neighbours who we share the biggest border with.

As for participating in the Festival, how about we clear that up with Bayushi? See if she will order us to participate like she did this time? Because as far as I can see, we are likely to end up drawn into the competition one way or another, so we might as well be ready for it.

Maybe two or three looking for medicine or doing something to improve our will (meditation ) and our temptation and commerce.

And how would you justfy this? We have neither medicine or meditation. Do we suddenly develop an intrest out of the blue?

And to finish it off:
On top of the above... Why would we have any desire to compete in the Festival?
Because doing so might help maintain good relations with the Matsu and we are likely to get drawn into it anyway? As we just got a rather crude reminder off, while we might be doing some good with letting Scorpion get more access to Shiro Matsu, we have done little to win over the hearts and minds of the regular Lion. The most we did there was our performance in the Display of Steel. We might want to keep working on that.

What is your justification for ignoring a chance at furthering our mission? That it is risky? Or that you are afraid of failure? How would preforming well, but not wining to anything do make us more famous?

But it would help us better interact with the Lion. Look, the Scorpion who competed honorably. Again. He even lost, but gave a good showing. Are you sure he is a Scorpion?

Let's go in order:
First, sorry but when I put Crane I wanted to write Crab.

The problem is that we don't have anything to get from it.

We have one letter that can be used as a base.
And one letter that was coded.

We get from the letter that it was a forgery, and that it was probably the act of an enemy of all.

We can't discover who wrote the letter (not enough information) or when it was written (not enough information) at most, we can get a better feel for the code used in it.

And for that, we can use our resources and let our pet spy brake the code and give the contents and the Cypher to us. No need to use one action on it.

We have minions, let use then.

Also, anything that could be get from the letter will be got from all the Scorpions in all the courts around the empire, as our information goes around.

Unless our meeting with Chen or with Otomo bring us more information, the letter is not something that we should spend actions on.

Kata training is important. It should help with our main mission, make the Matsu happy with us. They praise skill in battle. Taking training seriously will be seen as a plus.
We already got an in with the Magistrates, an embassy and our Lord has an in with the Matsu Lord. If we don't bring shame to our delegation, we already got all we wanted. Anything more is a plus.

On this, we don't need to compete on all tests, we can skip this and the Archery ones and do our best to improve our social skills.

Also Bastur? While we might get along OK with the Local Crane, the Crane and the Scorpion are rivals at court at large. I am not sure how much they would want to trade with us, and the Phenix lands are on the other side of the Lion from us. Not sure what it would be worth to trade with them.
sorry again, as I told I meant to say Crab and not Crane.

What we can get from the least member of their delegation is very little and not worth the effort at this time, as he doesn't have the authority to broker any deals with us in exchange for protection.

Also, where did you get the idea that I was looking for wagers? I was looking for commercial intrests between ourselves and the Crab, our neighbours who we share the biggest border with.

Sorry if I misunderstood, but when I saw the post earlier I could swear that it had something about wages. Sorry. What you put the is what I think it should have.

The Phoenix situation on the other hand, is more because they are in the other side of the Crane and close to the Mantis.
In other words, they are useful for information on the mercantile situation of those two clans.

It is more of a way to strengthen our bounds than of commerce proper.
And that we may be able to cause problems to the Mantis and the Crane is a plus.

We also have to remember that the Mantis is working the Crab (by their siting position on the table) so if we have a second target we may not be blindsided by any agreement between those two clans.

As for participating in the Festival, how about we clear that up with Bayushi? See if she will order us to participate like she did this time? Because as far as I can see, we are likely to end up drawn into the competition one way or another, so we might as well be ready for it.

One thing is ask and, if necessary, spend our resources on it.

Another is let's spend our resources aND then see if we will participate.

I would prefer not to.

And how would you justfy this? We have neither medicine or meditation. Do we suddenly develop an intrest out of the blue?

We needed it and couldn't help ourselves.

More so, we do have knowledge on it, what we lack is practical knowledge. And that is what I was proposing we try to get.
We may even get our little new spy to help us with it.

We also have an story in this game of training helping us to improve without the experience expendure.

On meditation ir was an example if people didn't want to try the other options.
And improving those would be better than training more of our combat skills.

And to finish it off:

Are you sure he is a Scorpion?

we don't need to gain their hearts. We are the designated vilan, thee is no way to get all the Lions to like us. What we need is to make the ones with power like us or at least, need us.
And on that we managed already.

We are the courtier of our delegation, we got what our lords wanted. Now is the time to go for the sub options and improve our relation with the other clans.
If we prepare to the race we would, at least, have to spend 5 actions on it.

Those actions can be better used on other matters, like getting to know what is the Mantis and Crab deal or what we can get from the phoenix delegation.

We are in a situation in with we have to avoid to get monofocused on the Lions and if we spend a third of our actions on they, we are not doing it.

You want to try to keep the rapport that we got? Put some actions with our Magistrate friend, some with the son of the Matsu lord, or more with the Ikoma, but we don't need to participate in the tournament for it.

What I am trying to do with the letter is study it with Calligraphy bend. When we investigated the letter it told us that masters of Calligraphy might be able to tell more about the person who wrote it. We may not be a master of Calligraphy, but we are not bad at it. We might be able to learn something about the forger, and if nothing else, we can memorize his writing style. The way he/she/it writes the Kanji. So that if we have the opportunity we can recognize the writing when we see it, without having to get a writing sample and being forced to bring it back, and compare them.

I guess we could focus on improving our Social Skills. But how does one train those? Any suggestions?

Wagers were mentioned. She tried to sucker us into one. We wiggeled out of it. We can negotiate legitimate trade deals now, if we can get an introduction from Hida. I feel like the couple of sentances we spoke is insufficient to casually approach the leader of the Crab delegation, and that getting closer to the Smart Crab is a good idea for getting into their good graces and getting info.

What I am reading about the Festival is an If/Then situation. Clear it with Bayushi if we are attending the event, and then if so, prepare, and if not, work on other stuff, right?

I agree that picking up those skills would be useful from a power gamer sort of perspective, but when I tried suggesting picking up medicine when our lord was injured, it did not get much interest. So I do not thing(as far as I can tell) that the other questers are interested in spending XP(or actions) on those skills at this time.

I do not think we are the designated villain. Read our Exceptional 6 Honor. I think our Clan is a designated villain. And us being seen as an honorable Scorpion might be an advantage to the Clan. This might be something we might want to clear with Bayushi as well, but as far as I can tell, the Clan has plenty of Villains and people who are much better at it then us.

I think at some point we might want to pick up Perceived Honor (The Advantage), so we can do the despicable stuff when we have too, but that generally we might be more valuable to our clan with a good reputation. We would not be the first, nor the Last Scorpion, to have a good reputation. Those are Exceptions, but they do exist. And the Clan uses them well.

So as far as we can tell we got two plots: If we are going to attend the Festival, we need to spend some actions preparing for it. If not, we want to spend some actions keeping our good relations with the Matsu and the Otomo.

I though commerce was a big no no for a samurai. Shouldn't we be leaving that to pale oak?

If we expect to deal with the Yasuki, we need a point or two more. (That could be acquired by training with Pale Oak - we could also get some other things with him-)

The problem is that we don't have a mastery in that skill. Not to mention that I think that to notice anything we wpuld need an investigation roll before we could realise anything in a new document.

We could spend more actions studying calligraphy, but we also could put it in the hands of our pet spy and see what he could give us about who write the letter.

Not only this, but we didn't improve our skill since the last time, so I don't see what more we could get at this point that we couldn't get by sending it to our spy to study for us.

I guess we could focus on improving our Social Skills. But how does one train those? Any suggestions?

For Commerce and other low skills I would go to Pale Oak.

For medicine, I would go for our new pet or for the library.

For etiquette I would go to the library to read on it.

For sincerity, maybe go for a place where we can play some games in with we can try to ly our position (Pale Oak and the theater may be able to help us with this)

For investigation, Pale Oak or our friendly Lion policeman.

Forgery, Pale Oak or simple repetition with the two letters and other official documents that we have at hand.

I agree, maybe arrange for him to get his preferred kind of food.

I am cool with that. It is just that I would prefer not to compete.

They may surprise you. But any other skill would be better than another combat one.

Our clan is the designated vilan, but our honor is not that noteworthy.

If I am not mistaken, don't the Crane begin the game with that level, or close to it?

We are the exception to the Scorpions, but that only means that people will be trying to see what is our angle.

In time we may pick an advantage, but we are Scorpios and our honor is an useful asset, nothing more, nothing less.

So as far as we can tell we got two plots: If we are going to attend the Festival, we need to spend some actions preparing for it. If not, we want to spend some actions keeping our good relations with the Matsu and the Otomo.
the lion one is a long term one. So it doesn't need to be heavily act on every week.

We need to mantain our present level, but this is in the course of he next two months, so no need to spend more than an action o two on it.

Otomo is also someone that we want to keep close, but he brings his own kind of problems, so one or two actions also is the max that we should use this week.

The rest should be used in improving our skills and or opening up new opportunities for us to work on.

Well, one day and only one plan... do anyone want to try?

I liked Sirrocco's small plan... but I don't think nhe did it in a plan format.

Plan: Primemountain
So after some discusion with some of the people here we get the updated plan:
[X] Plan primemountain
16th Day of the Boar(Morning):
Ask her if she wants us to enter the Festival of Lights competition.

16th Day of the Boar(Afternoon/Evening):
-Arange a visit with Otomo-sama. Perhaps he has further use of us? If not, just be good company and see what you can learn of Otomo-sama opinion of the current state of Court.

17th Day of the Boar(Morning):
-If Attending the Festival Competition: Practise our Body. Runing and limbering excercises. We need to be in good shape for the Festival.
-If not Attending the Festival Competition: Speak with Pale-Oak. We know a bit about Commerce. Perhaps he can further educate us. That can then lead into the afternoon lessons on the Crab.

17th Day of the Boar(Afternoon/Evening):
-Speak with Pale-Oak. Have him help us review for our meeting with the Crab. What the Crab have, and what they need. What the Scorpion have and what we need. See if he has any other news for us.

18th Day of the Boar(Morning):

-Arrange a private meeting with Ikoma Genji. See how he is handling the situation, and what further service he might require from us.

19th Day of the Boar(Morning):
-Speak with Pale-Oak. Practise possible deals we might offer the Crab and their possible responses. Preapare for the meeting with Yasuki Miya.

19th Day of the Boar(Afternoon/Evening):
-Invite Asako Tani for some tea. Preferably in a teahouse. And not the same one you visited previously. Enjoy the company of someone with interests as wide as ours.

20th Day of the Boar(Morning):
-Seek out Yogo Hanzo. See if he needs anything from us and if he could carry the paper fire ward with him. We might need it on short notice. Clear it with Bayushi on the 16th.

20th Day of the Boar(Afternoon/Evening):
-Go meet with Yasuki Miya. See what the Crab need and what they are prepared to offer. Agree to no deals in the single session. But if cleared with Bayushi on the 16th we might lay down some groundwork for future deals.

21th Day of the Boar(Morning):
-If Attending the Festival Competition: Train our silent movement. See if Bayushi-sama can help with that. She certainly snuck up on us.
-If not Attending the Festival Competition: Practice our Calligraphy
21th Day of the Boar(Afternoon/Evening):
-Practice our Calligraphy. Make ourselves available if someone is trying to meet with us.

22th Day of the Boar(Morning):
-If Attending the Festival Competition: Practice our Running. The Festival of Lights is tomorrow and we do not want to disgrace ourselves.
-If Not Attending the Festival Competition: See if you can not introduce ourselves to one of the Mantis. We should not neglect their delegation.

22th Day of the Boar(Afternoon/Evening):
-If Attending the Festival Competition: Find and investigate the field where the Festival of Lights will be. Knowing the terrain and the obstacles will be helpful in the competition and will help us better prepare.
-If Not Attending the Festival Competition: Go to the Five Arches Theater and see if some of the Actors there would be willing to teach their Art.

23th Day of the Boar – Festival of Lights(Morning):
-If Attending the Festival Competition: Make our preparations for the competition after the festival of Lights.
-If not Attending the Festival Competition: Make our preparations for the Festival of Lights. Invite Asoko Tani to the Festival.
23th Day of the Boar – Festival of Lights (Afternoon/Evening):
-If Attending the Festival Competition:Compete. See how we do.
-If not Attending the Festival Competition: Enjoy the festival itself. Watch the competition.

@Primemontain, I don't think that only one action for each tipe of training is sufficient for us to get any bonus from it.

Better to do less, but have a bigger possibility of success.
Let's keep only on one or two (commerce and calligraphy per example)..
On this, better to move Pale Oak meeting for before our meeting with the Otomo, and have at least two actions on revising commerce before we approach the Kaiu (maybe an offer of good food?). FROM that we see if we manage to get a meeting with the Yasuki, let'snot be presumptuous about her meeting us.

Also, who we will invite should be let open, as we don't have information on their present situation.

We don't want to appear to be going for the second best soon after the crane death.

Another point is that the Unicorn is Hanzo,s problem... no need to allocate any action on it.

So our job is Crane, Crab, Mantis and Phoenix, right?

I've replaced the Introduction to Unicorn with the Mantis, as that was my bad, I forgot Hanzo was dealing with Dragon and Unicorn.

As for the rest, there are 3, read them 3, commerce and Crab meeting preparation actions before the meeting with the Crab delegation head. IF, if, we are not attending the Competition. As for the rest @Bastur2 , feel free to show me what a plan like that would look like. Because at this point, I am not sure I get what you are trying to say. So please give me an example.

You put one training action, (I didn't see the meeting with the Kaiu) and two meetings with Pale Oak.

The problem is that I don't see one training action as sufficient to improve our commerce.

We would need two or three, in my mind, before we are elegible to any bonus whatsoever.

That is what I was trying to say, that one training session for skills is not enough, as we don't have any experience point to spend.

-If not Attending the Festival Competition: We know a bit about Commerce.

See those meetings with Pale Oak?
For Commerce and other low skills I would go to Pale Oak.
Those are both on the topic of Commerce. They are just a bit more focused on the application of Commerce to Crab, then just general Commerce. It is still training. Hell you suggested it. If you do not like the way the meetings are described, and would instead like it to say only: "Training Commerce with Pale Oak" then knock yourself out with your own plan. I'd rather make it all fit into a narrative, then express it in "Power Gamer" language...

How long will it take for our new Ninja to get gud, scrub, @Maugan Ra , based on your knowledge?

I mean, the girl whose uncle we saved who is going to become a spy/ninja/whatnot.

Naoto has no idea. He's not a spy and has no real basis for working out how quickly one could train as one. If, indeed, Pale Oak is actually a trained spy and not just a heimin who picked up on a few things.

Anyway, ninja don't exist. Everyone knows that. Even Naoto knows that, though as a Scorpion he probably figures the myth provides wonderful cover for actual shadow ops.

OK, so far I'm inclined to take Plan Primemountain as the general course of action for the coming week. It seems solid and in-depth, and I don't want to stall for too long in any one place. If anyone has any particular concerns or alternatives, state them now.

Update may come later tonight... but today is my Birthday, and I'll probably be out for a fair portion for the day, so it might come tomorrow instead.
