In Thunder's Echo (Legend of the Five Rings Quest)

Guess everything costs more in countries with stronger currency. A flat paket of 4MB/s and unlimited data using an USB drive is something like 6.2£ here. Still, glad to know you are no longer cut of from the Internet. It is one of the Wonders of the modern age. :)

Where the hell you live because I'm moving to your country. :p

I'm seconding this.

Because really, having a offer like that is like a sweet dream here. Data packages are the best thing since sliced bread.

@Felius @EtchedSteel @Dark as Silver :
You probably live in the US, right? That is what you get when you got a monopoly. US internet and Cable services are famously bad. This is what tends to happen when you call bribing an elected official "Lobbying". US people (Because really, Americans is a horrible name of people living in the US) love their Liberal Capitalism.

I mean we have Data Packages here, but they are mostly for people who do not really use the Net for more than checking their mail occasionally and like to save money. Those are dirt cheap. Most of continental Europe has the same conditions. You get Cable TV with you Internet (Or Internet with Cable TV), 24/7 customer service and should your Net fail for some reason, if lasts more then 24h you get free days for every one you missed. Not that it goes down. It's been down maybe 4 days the past year? The most common interrupt is a 30min shut down for maintenance and upgrades about once a month.

As for the United Kingdom, well, as they keep saying: Islands are Different.

Brazil actually. Over here the cellphone companies recently eliminated all unlimited mobile data plans (well, technically a few still have the "speed reduced to dial-up speeds after data limit" instead of downright cutting it out, but that's "promotional"). I pay around 75 BRL for my cellphone+data plan that includes about 40 minutes of calls to numbers from other carriers and 600MBs of data, and that's quite literally the cheapest non-prepaid plan this carrier offers, the prices going up very fast from there. Sure, currently given that the Brazilian Real is at a ridiculously bad exchange rate for the last few years, it would sound cheap after the conversion to pounds or dollars, at around 13 GBP or 19 USD, but at a more sane and normal exchange rate it should be around 25-35 USD for that non-plan.

Huh... Well, I don't live in the US but way down from there, if the location line below my avvie icon serves of any indication. :p

We had an issue with a monopoly until recently here in Peru, so yeah. Maybe what you described will be more accessible for us in the years to come, as more companies starts offering their services in this market. Right now, I'm paying around 90 PER (which is around a bit more than £20 iirc) to get up to 2 Gb of data and some other stuff like 500 minutes to call numbers from another companies (unlimited otherwise) and messages. Is kind of the best I could get for my phone.

And let's not talk about TV + Phone + Internet which its where you can scream "overpriced".

@primemountain I live in England, its why I riff on the scots so much. And if you want to talk monopolies I would suggest that you see what the UK's market like.
Quick google search suggests 90% is owned by BT and Virgin.

5.02 - Places, please
You don't even have to think about it, really. Let Bayushi Kimoko draw the attention and hold the eyes of those watching - indeed, you can already see her taking a seat near the end of the river, within easily conversational distance of Matsu Ketsui. Your place is in the shadows, handling the less savory or exciting duties that none the less must be completed in order to pursue your Clan's goals. With that in mind, you head towards the middle of the river, picking a spot where you think you can avoid standing out a great deal one way or the other.

Besides, all things considered you doubt you have the focus required to occupy the limelight effectively. Not tonight.

Still, there are certainly adequate distractions available to take your mind off of the unfortunate events of the past few days. At the very least you can watch and see where the rest of the guests invited to the court decide to seat themselves. Unsurprisingly Otomo Kairyu takes a seat near the Daimyo, though likely more for the social standing offered than because he believes his poetry is spectacular, shortly joined by Ide Taka and Yasuki Mia. Conversely, you note that Yogo Hanzo has decided to take a seat near the headwaters where he can avoid getting drawn into a poetry competition, shortly joined by the Tsuruchi and both Hidas. Interestingly, you see Daidoji Chen slip in and take a seat there shortly afterwards, though you have difficulty imagining that a Crane actually thinks so little of their own skills at poetry.

Then you take note of those who have decided to sit near you. The Winding River Banquet involves, as the name suggests, an actual banquet to start with, so you have an opportunity here to talk to your fellow guests and get a proper feel for them in ways thus far denied to you.

The first is a member of the Unicorn delegation, seated to your left. He wears the mon of the Iuchi family upon his purple kimono, and there is an unusual cast to his features that you can't quite place. Have the Unicorn truly brought someone with gajin blood to court at Shiro Matsu? Either way, you know that the Iuchi are one of the Clan's spiritual families, responsible for producing a large number of Shugenja.

Secondly is Shiba Danjuro, the Yojimbo to Asako Tani (who is seated a few places up, closer to the Daimyo), seated to your right. You've not spoken to him at all thus far - indeed, you don't think anyone has. The Shiba are supposed to be pacifists of some kind, though only a fool would discount their military skill, and he has likely trained as a Bushi to better perform his family's ancestral duty.

Finally, one of the Crab takes a seat directly across from you. He is a squat, unattractive man with the sort of overdeveloped muscles that hint at a life on the Wall or at the forge. Given that you can see the mon of the Kaiu family over his heart, you would suspect the latter, but either remains possible. Certainly going by their reputation he is liable to be the finest engineer and craftsman present at the banquet, and quite possibly one of the best in Shiro Matsu as a whole.

Who do you prioritize speaking with (note that the others may interject anyway, but it is more a matter of focus than anything else).
- Shiba Danjuro
- The Kaiu
- The Iuchi
- Remain silent and simply observe

What, if anything, do you talk about in particular?

QM's note - Apologies for the delay and the relatively short update, but I can confirm that Thunder's Echo is now running once again.

So... no need to focus on the Iuchi. Yogo Hanzo has us covered there. Shiba Danjuro... might have some interest. Might not. We have a pretty good rapport with Asako Tani, though - probably better than whatever we'd be able to develop with him. The Kaiu, though - he's likely to be pretty intelligent, and we're pretty good at getting along with intelligent people.

[x] The Kaiu
-[x] Attempt to guide the conversation to the Kaiu's own interests. We're pretty sure they're impressive in some way. Try to find out what that way is, so that we can be duly impressed. If we can find out something they want or need, all the better.

Not the only good option, certainly (even "simply observe" is pretty good) but I think it serves well enough.

@Maugan Ra Can we get a Lore: Engineering check, just in general, to see what our knowledge base on the topic'll look like? Kaiu love nothing more than to talk about the Kaiu Kabe and I bet this guy is no exception.

@Maugan Ra: As far as I can determine Engineering is a Merchant(Int) skill and we are untrained in it. Does something like a Lore(Engineering) skill exsist, or do we have a blinspot when it comes to Engineering it being more of an applied then a theoretical skill?

There is such a thing as a Lore: Architecture skill, and it's one of the School Skills of the Kaiu Engineers. They're very knowledgeable on the subject, and usually a Kaiu is going to be just about as intelligent as we are. With a more specialized focus, of course.

Ok then.
[x] Simply observe but attempt to put our fellow guests at ease. This is a time for fine dining and good company. Try and be good company. Use our wide base of knowledge to encourage lighthearted conversations and simply see where it takes us. We are trying to establish friendly relations, not probe their darkest secrets.
- [x] Be open to speaking with the Kaiu about Architecture but remain mindful of the other guests. We would not want to bore them with a subject they could not participate in.

Anyone else find it ominous that the title of that part is "Places, please"? Also, Ikoma is nowhere to be found.
