In Thunder's Echo (Legend of the Five Rings Quest)

Idea for later: We have managed to secure invites for Scorpion magistrates to come here.(Anyone remember our parents are magistrates? You think that might be an issue soon?) We can give them the letter, and they as professinals can try and figure out what they can learn about the person who forged it. That would probably for a lot better. And they are merely weeks away. What could happen?

Honestly, I would rather not involve the Phoenix, even casually and using hypotheticals, until we have to. This is huge, and I would rather tell as few people as possible until we have permission/more information.

The agreement for the magistrates to come and start assisting/cross-training is a) not formalized yet and b) isn't going to take effect until the new year. That sort of thing isn't put into practice all that quickly.

We do need to consult with our superior first, but give her a plan.

I'd say that the Scorpion in other courts need to be told quickly- telling other clans is something that...

Is less certain. We should certainly suggest it, but it's up to our superiors from there.

Ah. Yes. That's the gut reaction I had earlier, that I couldn't quite pin down.

This Thing? It's above our pay grade. It's *personal* for us - a woman we happened to respect and admire asked us to be her revenge, and we have revenge of our own to carry out. Thing is that it's much bigger than us. We've been given a high degree of discretion over our own actions at a Winter Court of, at most, secondary import. Our only really critical mission was "don't screw this up." That's quite a lot of responsibility for a samurai of our status and experience, and it suggests that our superiors hope to see good or even great things out of us in the future, but it's still a pretty limited arena. "The Crane Clan has been infiltrated by weird faceless things that are forging their Champion's mail" is an event that will meaningfully reshape the politics of Rokugan for the next few years. Right now, we should be kicking whatever decisions we can as far up the chain as we can punt them while also providing as much assistance as we can to those we do the punting to. This is also the reason that @primemountain's ideas about calling conclaves seem so overblown. That may be the right level of firepower to bring given the severity of the problem, but we are totally not the person to bring it. That's more for someone at the level of, say, Ikoma Genji or Otomo-sama.

@Sirrocco : And thus the conclave was removed. The main difference between our votes at this point is that I offer the suggestion to Bayushi sama that the Phoenix Loremaster might know what is up with the Earth Kami, that I specify telling Bayush about the Taint suspicion and suggest mentioning it to Genji, and that mine is a bit more paranoid in keeping track of the Scrolls and not getting ambushed.

EDIT: There is no unilateral action there, merely some additional suggestions. Our Lord can shut them down if she thinks they are a bad idea. Also, I insist on speaking to our Lord as early as possible, not as early as convinient.

Respectfully I believe you are letting your ooc overrule your knowledge of propriety in this setting. Flat out and bluntly put: we have NO reason to "kick this up the chain" and NO reason to believe we are badly out of our depth. Our OWN clan proved that the Kami can be tricked and therefore they cannot be relied upon for accurate testimony. Our big, bad clue of "blue, lithe, faceless" doesnt actually mean much on its own, certainly not enough to immediately jump to "omg conspiracy tell all the people things!" IC we know the letter was forged with the apparent intent to worsen already poor lion/crane relations and this plot killed a friend of ours. We also suspect possible shadowlands involvement due to the reactions of the Kami but we know spiritual testimony is worthless. Reporting to our boss is a given...consulting the crab about detecting shapechangeres in court (as a purely theoretical exercise of course) is a next good step. Being more paranoid ourselves is a good next step. Blowing the whistle to all about forged mail ( and we are scorpion, we forge correspondence as a clan a lot) just makes us look to our bosses like we cracked under pressure and grief.

That is not the impresion I got. I figured that most people do not even consider the posibility that mail could be forged because it happens so rarely, and that like an inteligent clan, we save the ability to forge official letters for when it would be particularly effective. I doubt the Scorpion as a whole, in the entirety of Rokugan forge more then 5 to 10 official documents a year. Not counting the ones for their own use, or for the use of their agents. Like, the Scorpions forge fake IDs for ninjas all the time, but not fake Clan Champion orders. I am responding as if it is a big deal, because I belive it to be a big deal.

This is the kind of thing that happens in stories and that our sensei warned us against, with examples that happened over the centuries. Not a common occurence. Otherwise the Crane would not be able to trust their mail, if the Scorpion forged it regularly. No one could trust mail in that case.

4.18 - Fifteenth Day of the Boar
QM's note - Not a lot of formalized votes here, but there does seem to be a general consensus stemming from the discussion I've seen. With that in mind, have an update:

-/-

You breath out slowly, fitting things together in your mind.

"It seems, Yogo-san, that you may find the opportunity you seek here after all."

It makes a terrible kind of sense, really - during the events leading up to the Second Day of Thunder, an appalling number of shadowlands creatures and tainted warriors entered Rokugan. The majority of them were destroyed outside Otosan Uchi, but a considerable number fled into the wilderness while the armies of Rokugan were too exhausted to pursue. Emperor Toturi has spent much of his early reign coordinating the forces sent to hunt down and exterminate those lingering remnants, but the Empire is a big place. It is entirely believable that twisted monsters such as that would attempt to create strife and discord in the Empire through underhanded means - the real surprise is that they were able to intercept the communications of a Clan Champion.

Hanzo stiffens briefly as the true import of your words sinks in, and then he nods. "The spirits of the Earth are the ones most closely associated with Jade." He says, a kind of baleful hate underlying his words. "Few things arose their ire like the corruption of the spirit."

"Would you be able to use your gifts to seek out other signs of them?" You ask slowly, considering the full implications of what this might mean.

"I... could, to a certain extent." Hanzo says after a moment. "The kami do not perceive time and space in the same way that we do. The spirits in that paper were not generally agitated, only when I asked about a specific individual. Tracking down other signs that way would be deeply inefficient and rather unreliable."

"I see." You nod thoughtfully. You suppose that infiltrators from the shadowlands would not be nearly so dangerous if any Shugenja could unmask them so easily.

"There is another prayer that I know which could assist." Yogo Hanzo offers. "The spirits of fire can be entreated to ward a particular location for approximately a day. Anything that bears any kind of taint is barred from entering the area. Normally this would be of purely defensive use, for it takes time to set up and the Ward is immobile, but I know of a way to imbue the prayer into an individual piece of specially prepared paper, for immediate deployment."

You raise one eyebrow. "That sounds... incredibly useful, Yogo-san. I presume there is a reason why this spell is not more frequently used?"

The Shugenja's mask prevents you from seeing his face, but you are fairly sure he is smiling. "Primarily because it wards against tainted creatures by, ah, setting them on fire, Soshi-san, and most buildings are constructed from wood and paper." He pauses to consider for a moment. "The activation is also fairly obvious. If I were to employ the spell in a particular room, virtually anyone with any kind of spiritual education would be able to tell that I was examining them for the Taint."

Which would also be taken as an accusation by many, and responded to as one would any other mortal insult. Yes, you can see why that would be potentially problematic.

"A method best kept in reserve, then." You say dryly. "Very well. I will make a written record of my findings, and then seek out Bayushi-sama. She needs to know about this."

"Know about what?" Bayushi Kimoko says, from her position by the doorway. You twitch slightly in surprise, for you could have sworn you were alone in these apartments with Hanzo. Still, it probably should not be a great surprise to find that your superior is skilled in the arts of stealth as well as being spectacularly lethal with a sword. And now that she is here, you can make your report.

-/-

It does not take long to convey the gist of things to Bayushi Kimoko, who for all of her creative approach to delicate situations still possesses a keen mind and the benefit of significant experience. What takes rather longer is the explanation of all of the details and the debates over the particular methods and likely implications thereof - your superior clearly wants to make absolutely sure of her position on this matter before moving ahead. All in all, it is completely dark outside by the time that you actually get around to finishing up.

Eventually, she sits back and nods thoughtfully. "This is, needless to say, highly significant." She says drumming her fingers on the side of the small table in front of her. "Very well. I will pass this up the chain of command, with my full authority attached to it. Our lord's need to know, and they will have the perspective and authority to make sure that this is properly acted upon."

She fixes you with her one remaining eye, and the intensity in her glare is enough to make you glad that you are already seated. "In the meantime, Soshi-san, Yogo-san, we hold this secret close. Tell no-one of your suspicions, until our lords have made their own decision. This is a direct order, you understand?"

"Yes, Bayushi-sama." You reply, Hanzo echoing your response a moment later. Your lord has given you an order, and you will obey. "If I may ask... what of Ikoma Genji?"

Kimoko nods. "Find a way to inform him that the letter was forged, but nothing more. That should be enough to earn the embassy, particularly if we can assist him further in the future. In fact... Soshi-san, you will attend the Winding River Banquet tomorrow. Use the opportunity to inform him in a deniable fashion."

"Hai, Bayushi-sama."

Fifteenth Day of the Boar

You awaken before dawn the next day, though with the coming of winter that means less than it otherwise might. Still, today is likely to be a busy one, and in preparation for a courtly activity you need to be sure that you are dressed appropriately and fully prepared for a public display.

It is as you are returning from the baths, making your way back to your quarters in the pre-dawn gloom, that you catch sight of her. Moving with deliberate grace, Doji Mariko is crossing the parade ground, having just left the tower, and is heading towards the castle exit. Daidoji Chen is at her shoulder, and her kimono is one of purest white.

The colour of death.

What do you do?
[ ] Attempt to speak with her.
- [ ] What about?
[ ] Follow and observe silently.
[ ] Respect her apparent desire for privacy and stay away.

[X] Follow and observe silently.

Kinda want to respect her need for privacy, but I want to be certain that her acts are not exploited or defiled either. It's going to be hard, but it's also going to be a final closure too.

Plus she doesn't deserve to die alone.

[X] Attempt to speak with her.
- [X] Let her know we have begun to take steps to fulfill her final request of us, but also that we have been ordered to say nothing else.

We can't tell anyone about what we found, as per our lords command, but we can let Mariko-san know she will not die for nothing.

She deserves to know that it'll all work out. Except for the part where she's going to be dead and not there in the end and ;_;

I see no reason to disturb her; we already told her we'd do everything in our power to get back at whoever set her up.
