In Thunder's Echo (Legend of the Five Rings Quest)

I mean, say Kakita wins the duel. Would that mean Doji would be safe until the next time she delivers an insult?
Say Kakita loses, how does the whole sepuku thing go from there?
It is difficult to plan further when we do not know what happens after.
Duel

Because shugenja and courtiers were part of the samurai caste they must abide by its rules. It was therefore demanded by them that if they were challenged to a duel, they would have to answer as any bushi would. Because they were not generally deemed skilled enough to participate in the duel themselves, they were allowed to have a Champion (otherwise known as a second) stand for them, but must face the consequences of loss anyway- more often than not, this meant seppuku.

If Kakita-san goes down, Doji-chan's going with him. In all likelihood, she'll either do it on the spot or sometime on the same day. She's probably come here with all her affairs in order.

If she wins, then she's safe until the next challenge is accepted. Her honor has been upheld this time, but there's nothing stopping another Matsu from running into the Kakita iaijutsu blender.

Reading up on it, is it true that sepuku can only be commited with their lords permission? That it is something called kanshi if not cleared with their lord? Does that pertain to this situation? Would she have to wait on a letter from the clan champion to approve her sepuku? How does that work in conjuctions to duel to the death?

For the purposes of this game, 'your lord' means 'your direct superior'. There are tens of thousands of samurai operating across an Empire that is hundreds of miles wide and restricted to medieval communication levels. It's simply not practical for everything to go to the Clan Champion at all times.

Doji Mariko is the highest ranking Crane present in Shiro Matsu, and as such has the authority to make these decisions for herself.

I think the main reason we're not standing with the Cranes is because the guy dueling needs absolute focus to pull off his Kakita duelling bullshit, and being absolutely livid because he spotted his love rival (aka us) getting close to his crush in the audience is not conductive to that.

We kind of sorta need him to win after all.
What if he can channel that anger. Whenever it looks like he's going to lose we sweep Mariko off her feet and watch him beserk.
It cannot fail.

We should accept that there's a pretty large chance that she's going to be dead within a day.
She's managed to live so far and technically the matter is considered settled if Sekawa wins here. Of course that's not going to stop other Matsu from jumping into the Kakita blender but they'll probably have to wait a bit before doing so if I understand things right.

What we know about Kakita:

His stats at the time he dueled us:
Reflexes of 3, an Iaijutsu skill rank of 4 and a Void rank of 3.
Awarness is probably around 3 as well.
Insight rank of 2, so probably school rank 2.

What we know about Matsu:
She took on an Ogre and won.

Bets, place your bets every one. What do you think the odds are?

This is an idea a bit out of left field, but @Maugan Ra is it proper to gamble on the outcomes of duels to the death?
If so, we could gamble on the outcome of this one.

He's going to get +2k2+5 on all of his Iaijutsu rolls. Add that to 7k3 and he's going to clock in at least 9k5+5 on every roll during this duel (assuming those mentioned stats are correct).

I'd say he's got decent odds of winning.

You forgert, he still rolls katana damage. Unless his first strike kills her, then he gets to recive her attack. And then it is kenjutsu till the end. That Kakita will win the start is likely, but how much damage can he do?

He's likely to deal 6k2, not taking into account Raises for the Increased Damage maneuver. He's probably going to knock her down a few Wound levels, making it harder for her to hit him.

Our boss mentioned that she would handle informing the court about kakita's taking over the duel. I don't recall ever seeing a scene where that happened. Did I just miss it, or did it happen "offscreen" so to speak. If the latter, do we have any idea what she did?

Pretty sure that in this case that crane will spend void for extra damage (which you can do with katana's) so it's more than likely 7k3 base damage plus raises. He should shave off a good 30 hps before she goes, and honestly.....speaking as a crab player....ogres aren't all that tough since they can't hit for shit (but IF they hit....oh boy).

Well, the bonus provided by Center Stance can also apply to Damage Rolls. So if he did that and Voided, he'd be keeping 4 dice on damage. Really, we're just going to have to wait and see just how exactly Sekawa decided to handle this. If he plays it out right, he really could have a decent enough beginning strike to cripple his opponent on turn one and have a much easier time with the rest of the fight.

dun dun DUNNN

Unexpected huh?
Sekawa lost the first strike but won the fight?
They wiffed at each other for ten minutes straight?
First strike double takedown?
