Johanna will likely dig trough his target's background before starting crushing a new hero maybe a good motivation crushing some false hero that do not follow the rules...
[ Cue diabolical laugh]

oh boy...the consequences of a false hero paw patrol that makes the trouble so it can be solved by them?

that would be a SCANDAL!

MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Indeed it would, which gives me an idea! What if, for one of our schemes in the future we make it seem that the puppeteer has stolen/will steal(details to ironed out later) forcing both paw patrol and pence to work together to solve the clues to uncover where we are/do but secretly leave hints/subtle messages about pence and their previous 'heroic' actions. Where the final clue leads to a room full of evidence of pence false flag operations over their time as a 'hero'. Bonus points if we can somehow make Pence say it themselves either in a recording or being broadcast live for people to see.

We need to bracket the entire thing with "Do you feel like a Hero"?

The audience will understand rapidly that something is wrong and activly look for what's going on as the Paw Patrol investigates.

Then at the end as everything come crashing down we ask thr question again with none of our prior playfulness in Johanna's voice but rather pure malice and disdain.

So, I've been thinking about the quest for a little while now, and I want to ask you all something:

Do you think I'm going too easy on you? And how do you feel about my GMing as of now?

The GMing is fine.

As for going too easy on us... shrug.

The mechanics might need tightening up or DCs might need changing. Bonuses reevaluated.

I don't see anything wrong but if the gm does... well that's more important.

We could probably use some nerfs, but it's not your fault the dice gave us a god damn DRAGON.
Though to be fair, a Villain being way stronger than the heroes to begin with isn't all that un-common.

I feel like one way to balance things out is to have rolls for the improvement of the Paw Patrol and to give the Pups some traits or boost their existing strengths as the Quest goes on to show the meta show's progression and how the Pups are growing as superheroes. You can even have some of Johanna's socials give boosts to Ryder and the Pups even in combat to show how Johanna having her cake and eating it of being the big supervillain while also a crushing hard on Ryder and being friends with the Pups in her secret identity makes her villain work more harder, thus leading to the eventual dilemna for Johanna on which she values more, her friendship or villainy.

I know as late comer potentially not best source of opinion. But I think youve been doing a great job with the quest dice just favor puppeteer is all~

I'm sure the paw patrol will bbounce back and she'll still have issues and problems pop up.

Basically as long our main heroes can keep up with Johanna to keep things fun the quest it fun.

But do not let the prospect of stomp scare you..sometimes the players will go for something easy. Like steal an diamond or expose an fraud.

Since we're already getting my proposed Narrative/Consequences to encourage us to lose from time to time, I think things will go well.

I would agree with Kaiser Chris about setting things up so the Paw Patrol's stats also improve with time and experience. That way we don't just end up overwhelming them with bonuses to our rolls.

I think you're doing a great job keeping things interesting! What numbers come up doesn't matter half as much as how well you tell the story, and your storytelling has been really fun. You're doing a great job of fleshing out the characters, building the atmosphere, and keeping us players invested in a show half of us haven't even seen. And Johanna continues to be an engaging protagonist with a multi-faceted impact on the world. The ripple effects keep spreading and I'm always eager to see where you're going next.

And, speaking as a QM who keeps rolling really low for important skill checks, sometimes rolling high makes things more interesting. I spend so much time internally screaming as all my carefully laid plot hooks go completely undetected by the narrative. Foreshadowing is nice and all but there's something to be said for a bombastic quest like this. It's a really refreshing change to see the players' plans go off without a hitch!

Duke... I need to ask... are you asking because you are working yourself into a paranoid frenzy over not being able to easily write cliché, derivatively contrived forcefully inserted drama, and it's tension? Or because you are genuinely upset that you've not been able to pull out punishment results for quest failures?

Because, I've gotta say, you've never struck me as a sadist that gets off on the gnashing wails of a lamenting player base; so... I admit to be at a loss as to where this issue of apparent personal sanity reduction, and desiring to spike participant anticipation is coming from. This particular quest isn't supposed to be hyper realistic just from its source material, and the questers have taken a less than serious direction with the MC to boot.

You've already nerf'ed exploding dice (and in this circumstance rightfully so) to only apply to natural criticals. And now you're asking if you should increase the DC difficulty? How about instead of pulling a Sage and constantly move the DC point... you simply, and significantly, reduce the modifier values for any temporary modifiers. As for permanent modifiers, do them in sets of 5; unless there's a bunch that we can simply dog pile them, then in 3s.

The "problem" is less that it's "to easy," and more that you're a bit free with rewards, and generous with them to boot. So, there's no need to "make the quest harder" which the only way to do so without touching the mechanics is to constantly adjust the DC. You can make "successes more meaningful" just by reducing modifier reward values. Both current, and future ones.

However, if your concern is more in line with the art of story telling itself... this is a free form RPG. That has a barely there guideline from the source material; and is so far off the laid tracks, that the story hasn't noticed that the train has leapt the rails and is still chugging along without them in a utterly different direction. The dramatic tension is entirely in the act of telling the story itself. Because we're literally making it up as we go along. This will naturally lend itself to dramatic moments at appropriate times. There's no need to forcefully insert drama, much less in contrived, derivative, and clichéd efforts. It'll include itself.

Does this rant help? (and was it at least not insulting? I've edited it a few times, and I'm still not sure I'm being particularly polite in my wording)

(Canon) Pup Talk: Nightmaster
Chase and Skye having a talk about how Chase is doing and the state of the city.

I bring you a omake on the bounty board~ Or at least my attempt at one if not quite what you wanted no worries I can always give it another try~ By the way on the second bounty board shouldn't some of those be crossed off? As thought the online reaction and the Humdinger ones had actually been done...or am I remembering wrong?

Now i'm placing this omake timeline wise after the bounty hunters but before the new pups arrive and Pups save the Puppets. Also internally placing this quest somewhere around as a alternate season 5 maybe (though could be wrong) since you mentioned the meteor or mighty pups hasn't happen yet which means it's couple seasons before they meet Tammy (And few other characters as well.) but again could be wrong.

Finally on the 5 omakes get rewards between updates does that count for bounty omakes or are those considered separate?

Anyway hope you enjoy. :) Though partial wonder if went overboard on the fear factor a bit here?

Pup Talk

It was a warm sunny afternoon in Adventure Bay and unlike what would be until recently be otherwise a certain pup wasn't enjoying it..

As Chase could only looked out to Adventure Bay with a glum frown on his face appearing to be in a deep thought till he raised his head up and looked over his shoulder at the sound of the voice, "There you are." Skye chirped up as she exited the elevator before running up to his side, "Oh hey Skye what's up." He said before looking back out to the city

Which caused Skye to frown at him in concern before she answered, "Well Ryder's gone to his meeting with Mayor Goodway about the new arrivals coming so.." She smiled at Chase, "The others thought we'd pass the time with a game of tag.."

She said giving her tail a wag only for it to stop at the next, "No thanks.." Chase said before shooting her a small smile, "You guys have fun though okay.."

Skye frowned as she stepped closer to her friend, "Chase what's wrong.." Chase gave her a blink before giving her a nervous grin, "Wrong?.." He asked putting on a clueless look, "Nothing's wrong.." He said giving Skye a grin that quickly fell when he saw her flat look which caused him to sigh, "It's just.."

He paused looking out into Adventure Bay in the distance before giving another sigh, "Do you think Adventure Bay still needs us?"

"What?" Skye repeated in shock staring at him with wide eyes that only got wider, "I mean.." Chase chewed his lips for a second before looking down at his paws, "Do you think Adventure Bay can still count on us?"

Skye shook her head bringing herself out of her shock before sending Chase a scowl, "Do I need to get marshall up here to spray with the water cannons again?" She asked referencing to what happen at the festival before Puppeteer showed, "I'm serious Skye.."

Chase retorted with some heat only for Skye to jab her paw into his side, "Well so am I mister.." She said scowling at him, "I thought we'd finally got past this.." She said with a worried frown only for Chase to look away, "Well that was before Puppeteer."

He said softly with a frown, "We couldn't stop her Skye.." He said causing the pup to to freeze and look away for a bit as her friend continued, "Adventure Bay counts on us and when they needed us the most.."

Chase look glumly out at the town from the top of the lookout, "We failed.." Skye looked at him with her own frown as he continued, "we basically just let Puppeteer walk up and rob us and the rest of Adventure Bay." He said with a slight growl as Skye spoke up in a tentative tone, "Come on Chase you know that's not true.."

She said with a soft whine looking at her friend with concern, "She just took us by surprise is all.." Chase than let out a snort, "That's no excuse.." He stated in a bitter tone before gesturing his paw over at the city, "Thanks to our failure and Puppeteer, Adventure Bay is living in fear."

He looked over at her, "They even had to set up a neighborhood watch." He said with Skye interjecting, "Which isn't a bad idea." Chase retorted softly yet defensively, "I never said it was...but." He looked away from her, "The fact they had to form it in the first place is proof that we failed them..." He added in a lower tone as his ears lowered sadly, "That I failed them.."

"Chase.." Skye said softly as he continued, "People are scared Skye.." He said raising his head to look at her, "Practical no one goes anywhere without somebody else.."

He scowled, "Some people are actually flat out moving away because of Puppeteer.." He said with a slight growl as he started to pace around the Lookout balcony, "Heck I overhead Francois the other day talking to Cap'n Turbot."

Skye blinked before giving him a surprised look, "You were eavesdropping.." Chase gave a guilty flinch, "I didn't mean to it just happen..." He said with Skye sighing but wasn't able to stop herself from giving Chase a curious yet worried look, "What were they talking about?"

He paused his pacing before looking over at her with a frown, "Francois is starting to wonder if they should stay with Cap'n Turbots sister" Skye gave a blink before tilting her head a bit, "I didn't know Cap'n Turbot had a sister.." Chase gave a shrug, " Me either but her names Tammy apparently.."

He than gave a shake of his head, "But that's not the point.." He said with a slight scowl, "The point is Francois is starting to worry if they should leave Adventure Bay until in his words this supervillain business hopefully blows over."

He explained before sighing, "And he's not the only one.." He said shaking his head frowning with Skye frowning, "What do you mean?" She asked worriedly Chase looked up at her, "When Ryder and me went to talk to the Mayor recently we found her with her brother Gustavo." Chase gave a weary shake of his head, "He's not only been been pushing her to do more to find a way to capture Puppeteer."

He said with Skye sighing remembering Gustavo and the fact that the mayor's brother wasn't exactly the most patient person but looked up in shock as Chase continued, "And he's also wondering if Adventure Bay is still safe for Julia and Julius."

"It is!" Skye snapped a tad defensively and worried knowing it would break the twins hearts to have to leave Adventure Bay, and she could only wonder at what the Mayor was going through because of this Chase however frowned glumly, "Well thanks to some of the new rumors going around Gustavo is starting to think otherwise." He said with a frown as Skye asked with her own frown, "What rumors?"

Already getting a bad feeling that like the rest of this information she wasn't going to like what she heard.

Chase turned his head to look at Skye, "You remember those bounty hunters from a little while ago." Skye scowled and gave a slight growl at the memory, "What about those jerks.."

She said with a slight huff Chase frowned over at her, "Well apparently they found Puppeteer.." Skye arched a curious brow, "And considering we haven't heard anything about her being captured i'm going to guess it didn't go to well." She stated as Chase gave a snort, "That's a understatement."

He gave her a worried frown as he stepped back beside her onto the balcony, "I don't know the exact specifics but apparently whatever happen has them terrified of her now, and spreading rumors that's only getting more people afraid."

This caused Skye to worriedly nibble on her lip wondering what the heck Puppeteer could have done to cause that kinda reaction. Because despite not being able to catch her and as a result managing to get away with a lot of valuables and private property (Their own vehicles included) she came across as more showboating than scary..

Though apparently there was more to this new villain than met the eye.. But Skye shook off that thought as she frowned over at Chase, "So what!" She said with a slight snap causing Chase to look up at her with a start, "So what if a actual supervillain showing up is scary.."

She gained a determined glint in her eye, "We've been through a lot of crazy and scary situations before.." She jabbed her face into Chase's ,"What's different about this time?"

Chase stuttered out, "Well..I." Only Skye wasn't having it, "I'll tell what's different...nothing!" She said looking proudly over at the city in the distance, "We might have lost this time but that doesn't mean we'll lose her next time.."

She than gave a shake of her head smiling, "And if we do so what?" She looked over at her friend, "We're the Paw Patrol and the Paw Patrol never give up!"

She said before smirking and gaining a determined glint in her eye, "So let her enjoy her victory because sooner or later.." She stared compassionately into Chase eyes as he found himself looking at her in awe, "We'll get her and bring her to pup justice~" She said with a giggle at the ending

Before standing beside Chase who weakly smiled at her, "Yeah.." He said softly before sighing, "At least the new pups should be able to help bring her to justice.." He laid down on his paws, "Because frankly with my recent performance in the field i'm more likely to help Puppeteer and get in your guys way.."

He said before flinching and calling out, "OW! While standing back up as Skye who had bitten on his ear (Not to hard but not to soft either) took a step back, "What was that for?" Skye scowled at her friend, "To help you get out of this funk."

She said before jabbing him hard in his chest, "The Chase I know wouldn't just call it quits and give up so easily.." She gave him a hard look staring straight into his eyes, "And i'm not about to stand by and let him do it either.."

Chase despite his current down in the dumps mood couldn't help but feel touched at Skyes concern she really was a great friend he thought with a slight blush to his furred cheek before shaking his head, 'Alright..alright.."

He said with a sigh yet gaining a smile, "You're right..." He told her with Skye getting a smirk as she nod, "Of course I am.." She said with a smug smirk before bringing her paw up to her chest, "Aren't I always~" She mockingly asked before the two pups shared a giggle

Chase than frowned again looking out to Adventure Bay with Skye than softly stating, "Hey.." He glanced over at her with her giving him a smile, "We'll get her..." He gave a nod, "Yeah...we will."

He said with the two pups sitting together and enjoying the view for a moment.
