Reading this last update this morning I realized how close* we are to reaching the Beacon portion of the quest and what will probably be our first interactions with most of the canon cast.

As such I ended up spending my entire journey to work, my tea break, and now my lunch break trying to figure out what sort of functions major characters' Semblances might translate into...

As such:

Function Name: Return()
Function Category: Combat
Function, er, Function:
- Active - Absorbs 1 discrete incoming attack (no beam tanking ;P), then adds a percentage of the absorbed damage to next offensive blow.

- Upgrade - Allows function to be chained onto the end of Turn() without overloading it so long as it was used once within the Turn() [Or just remove overloading effect if limitation makes it too weak/complicated]

- Passive - Grants a passive damage absorbing mechanic where a percentage of all incoming damage is absorbed. Damage absorbed recharges Turn() meter.

- Alt Passive - Significantly reduces the Cool down of a function after its first use outside of Turn() until another function is used

Projected MEM Cost: 3
Function Discovery:
Otherwise known as Yang() (not to be confused with Yang.exe which is a terrible mistake of a pun generator program), this function was inspired by Jaune's insights into Yang's Semblance and the potential for storing and releasing damage received (preferably without actually taking the damage first).

NB. Based on the idea of either Caching incoming damage (or rather the energy behind it), then returning it to sender.
Edit - Now based on the idea of accepting a single 'variable' into the function when called, and sending a response right back to where it came from :D. Upgrades may allow multiple variables of for additional effects to be applied to the Return() fire.
The Upgrade acts as though a copy of the function is cached during its first use in Turn() and can therefore be used for free at the end.
The Passive is absorbing some of any impact to generate additional power to recharge Turn() (much like a KERS does with power lost to braking in a high end sports car)
The Alt Passive is suggesting that the last function used is cached during its first use, so all subsequent uses are much faster than usual, so... Jauneting Everywhere Go!

Function Name: Rand()
Function Category: Combat
Function, er, Function:
- Active - User Selects desired function from the pool of free functions. Rand() then rolls a True (75%)/False (25%) die. If{True}, function is used as expected, Else If{False} use Random Function

- Upgrade - 75% chance to reduce Turn() cost of the Function to zero, 25% chance to double it

- Passive - 75% chance to slightly reduce cooldown of Function, 25% chance to slightly increase it.

Projected MEM Cost: 2
Function Discovery:
The results of running into a Crazy Drunk Hunter with an *interesting* semblance. Jaune still isn't sure why all the bad things started happening to him when Ruby started fangirling over the Transitor again.

Nb. For when the players wish to try their luck against the ever fickle Dice :p. Not really a serious function, but might be entertaining or have some niche use as a 'search for answer' function whenever we inevitably end up with far too many niche functions that don't make sense to lock in without knowing exactly what you are gonna be fighting.

Function Name: GoTo()
Function Category: Combat
Function, er, Function:
- Active - Charge up and teleport to target location (based on coordinates saved in memory, provided by the Process, or aura signature (longest charge and accuracy depends on range)).

- Upgrade - Attacks by the upgraded function skip the intervening distance between Jaune and their target. Cooldown is increased by 100%. (Suddenly hitscan, unlimited range Crash has to have some downsides...)

- Passive - increased Spacial Awareness, and awareness of Time-Space Phenomena in vicinity of Jaune. (Scary Portal Lady can't sneak up on me now!... I think...)

Projected MEM Cost: 5
Function Discovery:
I don't want to talk about it... Yang's Mum is Scary, enough said.

Nb. What else do you call the Function that takes you to an arbitrary location you know the 'address' of... Regardless of whether it's actually safe to do so or not? :p

Sure they're potentially a little bit broken... But we'd need to spend enough time near Raven to understand her Semblance to the point of an Alpha function without her either disappearing off or killing us... So yeah.

Function Name: Routine()
Function Category: Combat
Function, er, Function:
- Active - Skips Cooldown of next 3 Functions Used (Long personal Cooldown).

- Upgrade - Generates Shadowy Copies of the base Function that can precede or follow immediately after the actual strike. Copies deal negligible damage but have all the same secondary effects (Basically intended for additional debuffing of hard targets, or slipping attacks past defences by disguising the real one)

- Passive - Allows you to Queue and Charge up multiple Functions Simultaneously, with each immediately following the last one used (For when you really want to land a slow AoE, but don't trust the enemies to stay grouped from your Get() Function) (cooldowns are unaltered, so basically allows mini Turn()s where all functions go off nigh simultaneously)

Projected MEM Cost: 4
Function Discovery:
Based off Blake's Throwaway Clones, and the idea of multithreading Functions.

NB. Active is basically offloading the calculations into throwaway threads so multiple Functions (and notably copies of the same one) can be resolved nigh simultaneously.
Upgrade plays with her tricks in seemingly replacing herself with clones in close quarters (might be better as a sleight of hand, 'this function cannot be tracked accurately' option instead... Edit made), and the passive is a case of really playing around with Simultaneous execution of Functions but not actually altering them.

Function Name: Thread()
Function Category: Combat
Function, er, Function:
- Active - Reduces all parameters of next 3 Functions by 25%, but halves their cooldowns.

- Upgrade - Creates a pair of short-lived 'hardlight ghosts' of the buffed function that each deal up to 50% of it's damage, dropping as range increases (50% at point blank, 10% at max range). These spread out and act differently depending on the function Thread() is attached to (Breach becomes a 'cone', Spark gains extra frags, Crash becomes 3 'parallel blades' etc.)

- Passive - Generates a Holographic Jaune during Turn() who can use functions at the same time as the original. Has a separate Turn() bar equal to half of Jaune's, and if overloaded adds additional recharge delay to Turn() (so it's best to avoid that).
Projected MEM Cost: 4
Function Discovery:
Based on the properties of Sun's Clones, after a frustrating chase following a stowaway and actually getting to know him later on.

NB. Blake and Sun's Semblances are based off of different Multi Thread options I've seen in Object Oriented languages, and share similarities as both are 'Clone' Semblances. Blake's are used as throwaway decoys so she picked up a reference to Golang's Routines, whereas Sun's are more substantial and therefore became Thread() based on the more permanent threading setups used in other languages.

- Get() - Pyrrha

- Canon Function tweaked for in quest use. Honestly, Pyrrha's semblance tracks far too well to one of the canon Functions we don't yet have. I've definitely said as much before too.

Function Name: Trojan()
Function Category: Utility
Function, er, Function:
- Active - SEP field, effective on Humans, Faunus, and especially so Vs Grimm. Less powerful than Mask(), but can be selectively applied to all targets within a given range.

- Add-on - Reduces noticeable aspects of Function set up (so charging up a glowy laser sword strike is less obvious)

- Passive - Makes Jaune less noticeable or notable until he draws attention to himself, especially effective vs Grimm.

Projected MEM Cost: 2
Function Discovery:
Based on Ren's Semblance, or at least its visible effects on Grimm. Nothing to See here. Absolutely no sneaky Hunters with giant blue glowing swords, no siree! We're not sneaking past your security or anything, honest! (Developmental step for Mask() when combined with other Semblances?)

Nb. Simply due to the fact that Ren's Semblance doesn't quite line up to become Mask() on its own, and also because a general purpose SEP field had to be called Trojan() :p. Also has greater utility when in a group, simply because it can be used on multiple people (maybe Ping(Trojan()) would be an option for applying it? Or AoE the whole group (SEP Bubble?) before making a move?

Function Name: Overclock()
Function Category: Combat/Utility
Function, er, Function:
- Active - Next 3 Functions are boosted to 200% in all aspects, and cooldowns are reduced by 50%. However, each function deals Backlash damage to Jaune proportional to its Turn cost.

- Add-On - Function damage is buffed to 200%, but cooldown is increased by 50%

- Passive - each successive function hit stacks a 2% damage buff and 1% cooldown reduction onto Jaune (100% buff and 50% cooldown max), with all stacks resetting after Jaune takes a hit.

Projected MEM Cost: 3
Function Discovery:
Inspired by Nora's perpetual energy (is she still plugged into the wall!? Or has she figured out Wireless Charging!?), and her ability to crank her abilities up to 11 when given enough electricity... At least until she fatigues or takes enough of a blow to disrupt her concentration.

I might add more if I can figure out any other interesting or entertaining ones (I've got an interesting idea for Neo's [Mirror ()], Cinder's [Fragment()] and Mercury's [Trace()]), but for now I need to finish eating then get back to work...

(*This is a quest... So beacon may be a long way off yet :p.)

Edit - Meant to ask if anyone had any thoughts on any of the functions (I'm not going to demand a review for all of them at once ;)), or any suggestions to improve them?

All I'm saying is, I'm down if it does turn out a wee bit poly. Also should we offer to fix Ada's eye?

[X] Yes- ... Yeah. Yeah, you're ready for that kind of commitment. Again, less polyamorous when you didn't think it out loud. (Guarantees the formation of team JACL during Initiation. All other characters will be left to chance.)

Conservation of narrativium is okay with me!

It makes this arc more meaningful if they're going to be a team, in my opinion.

Also should we offer to fix Ada's eye?
And for all this talk of mechashifting armor and/or shield.... couldn't we just use Processed smart matter at some point or another for this? I can't imagine the process wouldn't be totally behind protecting it's creator like that, and we could paint it or what have you if we're a bit worried about the absolute monochrome.
Both of these have the same answer, actually-

Keywords: 'At some point or another.'

For Ada's eye, you currently have nothing that could do the job- Directory_Repair() can't manage something as finicky as the human eye, and even if it could, Ada's nowhere near healthy enough to do it safely, and the Process isn't at the point where it can emulate armour-tier materials, nor where it can either act as a stand-in or outright regrow your friend's eye. Given time, you'll manage both things, sure, but for now, it's beyond you.

Edit - Meant to ask if anyone had any thoughts on any of the functions (I'm not going to demand a review for all of them at once ;)), or any suggestions to improve them?
Good Lord man how long have you been hoarding these-

I can't even begin to go through these, that would be an update in and of itself, so I'll just say that this is genuinely impressive, and my only gripe is that Cache() already exists, so you'll need to rename that, unfortunately.

Aside from that, yeah, good work!

Also, somebody pointed out to me that I should probably tell the rest of you this since it's clear as mud in the vote itself- when I said 'entirely up to chance' I was... not incorrect, exactly, but maybe not entirely clear on what that involved.

During Initiation, you would be able to actively seek someone out, and that would give you a bonus to actually finding that person. That doesn't mean someone else can't find you first, or someone else won't find them before you, there's still a vast element of chance to the whole thing, but it's not going to be purely a matter of rolling dice. You will get some weight in what happens there.

I fully admit that this message is probably too little too late, since the yes train is currently putting Daniel Bryan to shame, but it's there in case you pull a miracle.

With that, the vote will close tomorrow at 8pm GMT.

[X] No- They're good friends, but... you don't really want your relationships with them to go any further than that- you are not doing this on purpose you swear- (Leaves all characters up to chance.)

I'd like to interact with some different characters. It's not like we'll have less interaction with these guys, anyway.

Good Lord man how long have you been hoarding these-
That's the results of a 1 hour drive to work 30 minutes after reading your last post, a 15 minute tea break, idle thoughts while working on code for 4 hours, and ~45 minutes of my hour long Lunch break spent typing them up on my phone and formatting them.

I've since had another few hours of idle thoughts while working on code and trying to walk a sports scientist through setting up a bunch of devices I installed before Christmas because his network administrator is too busy to show up, and I'm now just home and had my tea... Expect more functions shortly :p.

When I get started on things I tend to move very quickly, and I've currently got that much coding nonsense in my head having taught myself Golang and some C# while writing a program in work... I'm not short for ideas and names to use anyways :D.

Jaune needs more people in his inner circle. Different teams would help with that in my opinion.

... Technically everything.

See, I can't watch RWBY, partially out of disinterest with the way the series has carried itself up until this point, partially out of the fact that Ruby Rose's voice honestly, actually hurts my ears and sets off my tinnitus, so everything I know beyond the midpoint of Volume 5 is... really secondhand.

I know major things, like the fact that RT ripped off Mask Of The Betrayer, and Adam getting fucking smeared across a cliff by Bumblebee, take that how you will, and there's an old woman who's hands down the best character in the show.

As you can see, my sources may be slightly biased.

My general opinion on the show is that I may have problems with certain directions it's taken, but nothing is so egregious that I'm going to throw out everything. Except for one thing.

You know exactly what thing I'm talking about. I love that thing. But it's not appearing as intended by RT in this quest.

I enjoy my SDCs not being Saturday morning cartoon villains, thank you very much.
@Prok Have to say I would strongly suggest watching volume 6 since it's the best volume of the series and pretty much fixes the issues that were brought up and has also been received pretty well from fans with little complaints. Ruby's voice is also a lot more tolerable and lowered pitch so that likely won't be much of an issue anymore.

I enjoy my SDCs not being Saturday morning cartoon villains, thank you very much.
To be fair to the writers of RWBY a lot of real world countries have done some incredibly fucked up shit over history. A good example is a company that IIRC would outright cut the limbs off the children of their employees that messed up while there are several examples of companies trying to have the locals of places that have valuable resources killed so that they themselves can gain said resources.
No offense but would love for writers to point out to real life refferences of people doing horrible stuff as bad or even worse than what they have written just to see people's reactions.

I enjoy my SDCs not being Saturday morning cartoon villains, thank you very much.

...Okay what kind of fucked up Saturday morning Cartoons did you have in your day? Because that kind of shit is not the kind of thing I have ever seen on television in my time. Not for kids at any rate.

I stopped watching RWBY midway through volume 5, but have recently started again. I'm not caught up yet, but at least at the beginning of Volume 6 Ruby's voice is still pretty high pitched.

Honestly, I'd prefer voting No out of character. I like the OCs, but I don't have a stronger attachment to them than I do to the canon characters. I also think that initiation would be more interesting with a randomized aspect. On the other hand, I think it's in character for Jaune to want this as his Beacon team, so I'll pass on voting.

[X] No- They're good friends, but... you don't really want your relationships with them to go any further than that- you are not doing this on purpose you swear- (Leaves all characters up to chance.)

I'm switching up my vote, still want to partner up with Ada if possible, but just because we're different teams doesn't mean we stop being friends.

Sonic SatAM was the best. If you want to know what the evil Dr. Robotnik was like, just replace an "M" in the title with an n. Guy was a nightmare back in the day. Heck, I still differentiation between Dr. Eggman and Dr. Robotnik because Eggman just wants to rule the world while Robotnik wanted to extinguish all life everywhere so that every sentient being would be forced to obey his every twisted command as they silently raged within their own minds, unable to do anything but watch as they were forced to turn on their friends and family.

But yeah, I could totally see that happening in some of the older cartoons.

And speaking of Sonic, a small reason that I want JACL to form is so that we can meme about how Jaune is the leader of JACkaL Squad and how he has a power to reshape the world to his whims. (Sure, The Process is just a baby, but we'll get there eventually!)

Heck yeah. I love this band of idiots too much to say no.

And here, we, go!

Round two! Begin!

Function Name: Mirror()
Function Category: Combat/Utility
Function, er, Function:
- Active - Spawns a physically fragile (one hit of any strength will shatter it) decoy of Jaune with reflected movements from himself (ie. Jaune turns left, his decoy turns right. Decoy seems to peel away from his position to disguise which one is real). The decoy is identical in appearance to Jaune (barring its reflected nature) and will match any use of functions by the real Jaune. If given time to cool down the decoys may split once more, raising the potential damage output to 4x base but increasing all cooldowns by 25%.

- Upgrade - the Function it is applied to gains reflective properties (ie. can deflect projectiles or parry strikes without losing momentum, Shields can reflect some of the force they are struck with).

- Passive - Jaune gains a significant resistance to all energy based attacks in return for a minor loss of resilience in the face of physical attacks, and generates a slight blur or mirage around himself when moving quickly.

Projected MEM Cost: 3
Function Discovery:
Inspired by the mirrorlike nature of Neopolitan's semblance. This Function and its effects all revolve around misdirection, reflection and redirection of attacks, mirroring their inspiration's combat style.

Function Name: Fragment()
Function Category: Combat
Function, er, Function:
- Active - Launches a burst of transparent crystalline shards towards the target. These grow rapidly on impact with a surface or enemy, forming a number of short crystalline pillars (similar to the process pillars) which can serve as temporary cover or potentially trap enemies within them (note that the crystal is gas permeable such that those trapped within will not suffocate). These pillars can also act as 'prisms' for any ranged energy based function which strikes them, splitting it into two (straight path and reflected) with 33% of the original strike's power.

- Upgrade - Attacking functions will form a small amount of crystal around their impact point, and if paired with Bounce() will split into two (33% power) upon impact with a surface or enemy. Defensive functions will gain additional resilience vs energy based attacks and may explode outwards in a small burst of shards upon destruction.

- Passive - Functions used in sequence will gain a reduction in cooldown. Using the same function twice in a row will reset the discount

Projected MEM Cost: 4
Function Discovery:
Cinder has a cheaty glass based Semblance... So Jaune needs to have something too! ;). Inspired by seeing the few recordings of her previous matches when qualifying for the Vytal Festival at Haven, descriptions of some of the things Glynda has achieved with Dust and her Semblance, and a study of Lumen's weird Semblance outputs. The growth effect is based upon the Process' nonsensical tricks, but is limited to a simple uniform crystalline form.

Function Name: Panic()
Function Category: Combat/Utility
Function, er, Function:
- Active - Causes audio-visual 'hallucinations' in targets within range (Also affects mechanical sensors such as cameras, though those operating outside of the visible spectrum may notice some discrepancies). Targets' sight and hearing are hijacked by the Function, allowing Jaune to show them things that are not there, or remove specific things from those senses. The targets' senses of Taste, Touch and Smell remain unaffected, and any sharp head movements have a chance to momentarily disrupt the illusions as they readjust. Best when used to simply adjust what is already present in reality or disguise a new object, as greater complexity will increase the chance of the illusion being detected. Stationary targets or those moving in predictable patterns are most vulnerable to this effect.

- Upgrade - Adds multiple holographic copies to any strike made with a function upgraded by Panic(), disguising Jaune's movements and the real strike. Illusionary copies will act as if they were the real thing, but deal no damage to either scenery or enemies.

- Passive - Jaune may generate illusionary clones while moving around (1 every 2 seconds), each of which moves in a random but realistic manner and disperses either when struck or 60 seconds pass. A maximum of 15 illusionary copies may exist at any one time, and they cannot interact with the world in any fashion (though they can form holding a reasonable amount of items or tools for Jaune to be carrying). These clones can be controlled by the Process if enough of it is present, augmenting their potential as distractions (the Process can provide them with more complex instructions and improve how they appear to react to external stimuli for a more comprehensive deception).

Projected MEM Cost: 3
Function Discovery:
Following the development of realistic Holographic Clones and Heads Up Displays Jaune decided to see exactly how far such an effect could be pushed with assistance from the Process. Early versions had some success with the projection of small holograms into the vision of a stationary target, however this idea truly came to fruition upon gathering data regarding Emerald Sustrai's Semblance. While it produces less complete illusions than she does it is able to affect mechanical and electronic sensors as well as organic senses, with limitations based on the complexity of the illusion(s) rather than the number of targets. This function shows great promise as a source of distractions and entertaining reactions.

Function Name: Buffer()
Function Category: Combat/Utility
Function, er, Function:
- Active - Generates a defensive barrier (Honeycomb form) that either deploys as a Wall in front of Jaune (widest coverage, lowest absorption), a Dome (moderate coverage, moderate absorption), or as a Tower Shield on one arm (lowest coverage, greatest absorption). This barrier can absorb a significant amount of damage over time from incoming attacks and will gradually radiate the energy absorbed into the environment as light. The barrier can absorb an enormous number of small impacts before being overloaded in any form, but a single strike of a magnitude greater than it can absorb will outright shatter the barrier at which point it must cool down (though the attack will also be fully negated in the process). Upgrades can alter the behaviour of this shield, increasing it's total capacity, the rate at which it releases absorbed energy, the maximum power of individual strikes it can absorb, or potentially adding retaliatory features to it.

- Upgrade - Functions absorb any energy based attacks they intersect with, gaining a fraction of their power and taking on some of their properties.

- Passive - a simple barrier is formed around Jaune, and any damage taken causes it to shift in response, increasing Jaune's resistance to any further hits from that type of damage by one stage. This effect saturates in three hits, and each resistance drops a stage after Jaune blocks two attacks from a different type of source (eg. Physical (+1 Phys. Res.)-> Physical (+2 Phys. Res.) -> Physical (+3 Phys. Res.) -> Physical (+3 Phys. Res.) -> Fire Ball (+3 Phys. Res., +1 Fire Res.) -> Fire Ball (+2 Phys. Res., +2 Fire Res.) -> Ice Blast (+1 Phys. Res, +2 Fire Res., +1 Ice Res) and so on). Each stage absorbs a percentage of that type of damage (any thought on what would be reasonable?), and greatly increases Jaune's personal survivability vs single strong opponents (as they generally won't have enough damage types to really disrupt the defences).

Projected MEM Cost: 3
Function Discovery:
Upon coming to the realisation that he will be operating with teammates who might be injured in combat and need cover, or acting in defence of others who are less able to take hits, the necessity of a defensive option was immediately apparent to Jaune. That and honeycomb energy shields look really, really cool...

Nb. A variable defensive function which is either very good vs large numbers of mooks and defending allies or civilians, grants the option to counter enemy attacks with your own, or makes Jaune ridiculously tanky vs single powerful opponents.

Function Name: Linger()
Function Category: Combat/Utility
Function, er, Function:
- Active - Creates an AoE projectile which applies a DoT effect to the target that is determined by the type of dust expended (Fire -> Burn, Ice -> Freeze, Shock -> Lightning etc.). This projectile can be set to 'explode' at a fixed distance, on impact with a surface, or after a specified time period, and will apply the effect to everything within its radius (so be careful to avoid friendly fire outside of specific scenarios! Yes, I'm looking at you Nora...).

- Upgrade - Adds a DoT component to any Function, again dependant on type of dust used.

- Passive - Grants defence against environmental hazards and 'status' conditions.

Projected MEM Cost: 2
Function Discovery:
"Ow! Ow! Ow! Why won't it stop Burning! Blue! Help!... Ah, that's better... Too Cold! Too Cold! Ow! Ow! Ow!" - Excerpt from Blue's Audio Logs

And there's the next set, of which I think Mirror() or Buffer might be my favourite so far :D. I'll be changing Cache() to Return() which seems to be the most suitable name and again, any input into what needs changed for balance or to better fit themes would be greatly appreciated.

Edit - Almost forgot!

Function Name: String()
Function Category: Combat/Utility
Function, er, Function:
- Active - Creates a web of energy bindings that wrap around and ensnare any target they strike until they run out of power. When they connect they fuse together, leaving cutting, brute strength or Jaune dissolving them as the only viable methods for their removal (note that cutting or breaking merely burns through their energy faster, as they will re-fuse if given a chance to)

- Upgrade - If applied to a Function with multiple 'outputs' it will generate a damaging energy web between them. If applied to an AoE Function it will add a 'Sticky' component to the radius, and if applied to a DoT, Buff or Debuff Function it will increase the duration.

- Passive - Slightly increases all Function Ranges and Durations.

Projected MEM Cost: 2
Function Discovery:

"Stop running away you little Brats! Get Back here or else!" - Excerpt from Blue's Audio Logs
