New Good Seed and Omake Rule Updates
Good Seed and Omake Spreadsheet Rules:

Firstly, if you have questions about Good Seeds and the like please read here. If that doesn't answer your question please ping me in thread, or on Discord.

If you write a new Good Seed, or write an omake, please update the spreadsheet if you have access.

If you do not have access, please ping a collaborator (Swordomatic, Alectai, Quest, TehChron, Insane-Not-Crazy, Humbaba, ReaderOfFate, Kaboomatic, no., BungieONI) letting them know what you want and they will update the spreadsheet here. To gain access, you will need a gmail account of some kind. Throwaway emails are fine (I'm using one for the spreadsheet), but to gain access it's as simple as sending me either your email via PM, via DM in Discord, or just in Discord's #spreadsheet-requests channel.

This is mandatory. If a Good Seed does not record their omake by pinging collabs (or just requesting access and editing things themselves - this is the preferred option), I won't give out awards. If a new Good Seed is not recorded here, they won't advance. By doing this it makes the whole thing manageable for me - it's gotten pretty unwieldy!

Omake Writer Instructions:

There are four fields you need to fill out.

Omake Link, which is just a link to your first omake for the turn. This makes it easier for me to read them as I do the update - without this it's tough to know off the bat which omake were written this turn, and to properly

Requested Bonus, which is your requested bonus for your omake. You can leave it up to me if you like. You can see more info in the Good Seed infopost here.

Cultivation Aims. For those following unorthodox paths - higher than 9th Heavenstage or later than 7th Dao Pillar paths. Please put in what you are aiming for before you break through. I have left it as 'default'. If you do not edit it, I'll go with that.

Turn Notes - Do you want to do something specific? Enter a Secret Realm? Help the Clan out in some way? If you have something specific you want to accomplish on this turn, put it in turn notes so I can adjust your Fate around it.

All other fields are for QM use to record character information to properly run the flow of the game.

I'm gonna be honest, I don't really know what the options means, but someone suggested these would lead to unlocking more legacies which sounds like fun:

Turn 13 Fates - Missionless and Secret Realms
Fate time. They're aaaalll coming tonight!

Qinglong Shu
Fate: Who knew the truth of the Azure Dragon? Not any living, yet in a piece of whorled and warped space, Qinglong Shu walked forward into a set of trials that none who did not bore her blood could enter. The first trial was simple enough, a mere affirmation of her blood and who she was. From it came a powerful and arcane art, the Gravity-Reversing Stomp (+1 Impact). Difficult and expensive to use, it could nonetheless turn a fight on its head when used correctly. At the second, she was faced with a school of Rainbow Carp, darting around her head in a great pool of water that defied gravity.

Only by using the Gravity-Reversing Stomp had she any chance of navigating this pool, and for nearly a year she practiced and did so. Utter perfection was required of her, for this was a challenge not made for a Qi Condensation cultivation. The Carp moved in ways to make it harder for her, and time after time she was thrown back to the ground, wet and dispirited. Yet over a year she managed to make to the end of the second trial, and was there presented with a vial of blood, each of the Carp spitting some of their blood essence into the vial as she succeeded. On drinking it, her blood strengthened, giving her the Dragonfish Scales (+2 Impact). Merely strong enough to deflect blows and easily regenerated by water, they were somewhat unsightly on a human being, but sufficient to make her more difficult to take down in combat. Next she faced a Dragonfish, in a semi-lethal game of tag.

Yet it seemed to let her chase it, making the chase as difficult as it could be, yet possible. It forced her to chase it for two years and six months, feeding her as she repeatedly failed, allowing her to develop and grow her skills in the air as she did so. At the end, she caught it, and it spent another year teaching her the truth of the Stomp, fusing the art with her bloodline. The Stomp could reverse gravity, but summoning the Lawless Winds (+4 Impact) would let her summon a flow in which gravity was constantly shifting, something she could now navigate with ease. She could travel more quickly, though at great expense in Qi. Her finesse with the Stomp let her travel the winds, and could also throw her enemies into a gravitational vortex from which they could not recover.

At the last, she was savaged by an Azure Dragon - or at least the memory of one. The lasting Will of a dragon, empowered by a single true scale it had left in this whorl of peculiar space. It beat her, thrashed her, and threatened her with death for days and weeks, yet she refused to leave if it did not kill her. In the end, it submitted, scornfully letting her know its Will was almost at an end and it had no choice, and if she failed to absorb the Scale it would kill her. It spat the True Scale into her sea of Qi, and she felt it fuse into her very bloodline, granting her the Azure Transformation (+8 Impact). Transforming into an Azure Dragon of sorts, with the power to summon lightning, wind, spit fire, and allowing her unlimited flight and speed as long as the transformation lasts.

Unfortunately at her current level she could only hold the transformation for a thousandth of a second - or two at best, and would be forced to pick one of the aspects - summoning lightning, wind, fire, or flying, to be able to use it for sixty seconds or so, and at the tiniest fraction of its strength. Even so, it is a deadly transformation allowing Shu access to power beyond her level, though use would leave her utterly exhausted. As she advances, though, and her Qi reserves expand, it would become ever-more useful. With this, she left the Qiguai Secret Realm, unharmed and undaunted

Janus
Fate: Janus found himself assigned to a Century in the Clan's newly gained Eastern territories. One tasked with one of the first Caravans to set out from the newly founded Scorpion Trade Palace, no less. Granted the designation of Immunes, Janus was tasked with scouting ahead of the Caravan as it took a new route intended to cut through the fertile heart of the desert in the territories of the Heavenly Bandits. His instincts honed from his time as a street rat, combined with his relatively powerful cultivation made him ideal for the task, oftentimes providing the Expert leading them with life saving forewarning of potential dangers. Though wounded in a fight against multiple peak Qi Condensation Bandits in an unexpected ambush of his person, he found in their possession a cutting from the Enlightened Cactus, which once cooked and eaten boosted his Cultivation considerably (+20 Cultivation Years). Still, the rigors of the journey took their toll, and Janus found himself welcoming the familiar environs of the Waycastles upon his journey's end.

Ulysses
Fate: Overtaken by passion, this promising talent was snuffed out before he could reach his potential. Searching for a cure to the Blood Path contamination of those who had given into the Blood Mists, Ulysses accidentally created a poison instead, corrupting his own blood. Before he could go mad and kill his fellow Clansmen, Ulysses wrote his will, left behind everything of value he owned, and walked off into the Qi-Draining Desert, never to be seen again.

Shennong

Pleuron
Fate: Alas, poor Pleuron. Where others entered the Qiguai Secret Realm, it could not. Attempting to enter found it thrown out forcibly, harming the living city's avatar badly. This was a place for humans, it seems - or least Pleuron had not found the way to enter without suffering. Thrown back and rejected by the Secret Realm, only the use of a treasure allowed it to survive without permanently shattering its pathway forward as a cultivator. Despite this, it finally managed to begin to cultivate, reaching the 9th Heavenstage quite promptly.

Chang
Fate: Chang entered the Qiguai Secret Realm, and there he found his way smoothed by exchanging pointers with a 7th Heavenstage Blacksmith. Despite his relative weakness, the Ninth Prince had taught him a way to pinpoint weaknesses of certain arts, and the Blacksmith's combat style was one of them. Winning in a single desperate blow, he managed to take the man's hard-earned Glorious Qi Pill (+20 CY). From there, he fled the man's friends, hiding in a deep hollow in the ground. Pure luck saw him find a Yellow Meridian-Expanding Phoenix Fireflower (+10 CY) that he was able to use to drastically expand and strengthen the flow of Qi through his meridians, advancing his cultivation once again. He was then pursued by the Blacksmith, forced to use a treasure to escape the other man's grasp. While fleeing, he got caught in a ripple of space, and began to drown, having stepped through to the sky-sea up above. He felt himself die, but awoke nonetheless on an island. Only ten paces by ten paces in size, it forced him to experience a painful death a hundred more times, each death different and miserable. Yet while the misery made it difficult to note, each time his cultivation was advanced and empowered (+40 CY). At the end, the island crumbled into nothing, and he managed to return to the ground, escaping the Secret Realm without further incident.

Lipp Galanis
Fate: Lipp entered the Secret Realm, and for some time found himself wandering. Unlike those with great Fates, Lipp simply managed to sneak along behind an absurdly powerful Strength Purity disciple - one who's fists rivalled the strength of Foundation Establishment cultivators. The first of the Favored that the Clan would meet, this man strode through all challenges with ease. Lipp managed to follow behind, taking cast-offs as he went. Liu Tenchang was named the Favored Fist of the Heavens, and he struck a crab beast with Foundation strength to death, seizing results from its trials and leaving behind its pincer. Lipp seized upon it, forging a Pincer-Blade (+1 Impact), a useful sword specialized in grasping and shattering the blades of others.

Tenchang went into the lair of a fire-breathing lizard, and slew it with six strikes. As he left, Lipp found he had left in the lizard's corpse it's single eye. The Fire-Eye (+1 Impact) could be used to store Fire Qi, and let it out in one great burst.

Tenchang strode into a temple full of traps, disabling them all and taking the pill on the altar there - the Dantian-Satiating Firebelly Gutblast Pill . Behind it sat an old forgotten piece of jade Lipp snatched up, the Analysis Jade (+1 Impact). Imbued with the spirit of an ancient tactician, it could evaluate his past fights and give training advice, as well as advice in battle - though it was limited by its knowledge at the time it died.

Tenchang was then caught and sickened by the Pill, and Lipp thought to leave him. Instead, the Favored Fist called him over, and spoke to him. Tenchang had been saved by the sacrifice of two Golden Devil cultivators in the Plains when he was but a mortal boy, and had ever since sought to repay the friendship he had been given. He had known about Lipp stalking him all along, and had no objections to Lipp taking what he could from Tenchang's battles. He gifted Lipp with a symbol of his gratitude, the Empowering Punch Shell (+1 Impact), a seashell he had been given that could store up energy within it and allow the cultivator to unleash a single devastating punch at times.

Soon after, the Realm closed, and Lipp left, somewhat richer and more powerful.

Armus Hekurion
Fate: What can be said of young Armus, ever-eager to join the ailing Hekurion to the rising tide of the Great Era? We of the Clan value ambition, but the young Aspirant, freshly risen to the 8th Heavenstage sought to make a name for himself. Assigned to escort one of the first Trade Caravans from the newly risen Scorpion Trade Palace, he eschewed the paved roads through Jingshen lands and convinced his fellow Aspirants and the Centurion who headed it to try and blaze a new trail through the Bandit Territories directly into Clan lands. This was ill-advised, and the trade caravan was assailed many times by "unaffiliated groups" seeking the Spirit Stones or other valuables that they could get. Though there had been few fatalities, the wounds he took guarding his charges wiped out any gains he made in cultivation. Though this was not wholly a waste - from one particularly filthy Bandit he obtained the Iron Sand Rod (+1 Impact). A peculiar weapon that reacted to his Bronze Thunder Bloodline, allowing him to dissolve the rod into a cloud of metallic particles he could maneuver freely to aid in his cultivation of Lightning and Metal aspected techniques.

Carvos
Fate: There has been a resurgence of blood path bandits in the clan territories since the Blood Mists and so, many are those who are put to the task of rooting them out. Carvos takes to this mission with a glee that scares his comrades more than his foes, cutting down his enemies with the Way of Battle, his bloodthirsty axe. Much like how the late Jin Muyi consumed the blood of others with his arboreal half, the axe consumed the cultivation of those he killed and used it to strengthen Carvos in turn. Through his furious reaping, he managed to raise himself to the tenth heavenstage.

Liu Mang
Fate: Liu Mang found himself assigned along with his fellow former street urchin Janus assigned to guarding a Caravan setting out from the Scorpion Trade Palace, and during the difficult journey found an easy rapport as the two shared stories and ambitions for the future. Unfortunately, his boasts caught the attention of fellow admirers of Lady Yao amongst the Heavenly Bandits, and a troupe of them styling themselves after her beat him quite severely, though it was nothing he had not experienced before nor was it particularly life threatening. Still, aside from that his journey with the Caravan was unremarkable, and he made progress in both healing his wounds and an infinitisemal gain in his own cultivation by the end of it.

Yang Fangxu
Fate: Yang Fangxu was driven by her craft, and as new markets opened up it was inevitable that she would run to secure a chance to experiment with the ingredients made available by the Clan's new holdings. A clever bit of work had seen her transferred to becoming the chef of one of the first Caravans departing from the Scorpion Trade Palace, and she took advantage to bestow ample Stavraton upon the hesitant food merchants that set up their business there. Imagine her luck when she discovered the Caravan was considering moving through the Heavenly Bandit territories as well, infamously lush as they were. In typical overbearing fashion she "politely convinced" the would be opposing voices to the move, and from there they departed on their culinary journey with fanfare. Stuck cooking for the massive caravan for the entire journey, she found herself mostly unaffected by the bandit raids which constantly harassed her fellows. Still, a stop in Seven Temples City had enormous benefit for her - on sheer impulse she sought to fish from their bountiful rivers and lakes, intent on creating a new seafood dish. What she caught instead was a Spirit of Pure Current (+2 Impact), a sprite which upon being bested found itself doing the bidding of its captor, and with the ability to direct kinetic force like that of a River's current. An excellent sous-chef to help her stir and prepare dishes which would otherwise require Fangxu's personal attention, saving ample time in her endeavors. Oh, and helping slightly in combat too, one supposes. At the end of the Caravan's journey, her gained insights into the creation of new and exciting recipes from working with the new ingredients enabled Yang Fangxu to form her first pillar, stepping into Foundation Establishment as yet another of the Clan's many Experts.

Jiang Chrysanthos/Chrys
Fate: Finding themself still deadlocked in Cultivation, Chrys withdrew from warfare for a while, hoping that perhaps a change of pace might re-open their path. Spending some time working many odd jobs, they eventually found a calling in medical practice. Preserving lives and meditating on the transitory nature of it, they not only pushed through their nasty bottleneck, but attained that rarest and most beautiful of gems - a medical technique fast and stable enough to work on a battlefield. The River-Diverting Meditation(+3 Impact) is a breath exercise which, when properly performed in conjunction with pressing the right accupoints, will alter the body's qi flows to avoid that part of the body. This can be done down to the precision of a single meridian, sharply reducing the amount of qi lost to an injury and increasing the body's ability to fight while injured. Therefore, it is a technique which grows more valuable the more dire the situation.

Konstantinos Papadopoulos
Fate: Konstantinos entered the Qiguai Realm, and unlike many others, began immediately trading. For what? information. Verifiable, useful information. Within six months he had established a roaring trade, having started with a few Spirit Stones and had built his way up to selling the way through a local set of traps in the sky-sea in a nearby temple that had drifted close enough to the ground to be reached, and offered a permanent increase in strength in return for taking terrible wounds. Another cultivation opportunity that burnt lifespan now for cultivation now. His first great sale came when he managed to trade for the location of a nearby powerful Heavenly Light shaft, which he escorted the claimant to - half down and half when they arrived.

The claimant happily paid, for this light would bless the user and offer them many benefits, and so Konstantinos gained a Meridian-Blasting Snuffbox (+10 CY), which could be used to, well, widen one's meridians with a rather aggressive sort of snuff. It was almost empty, but it was enough to push him forward.

He got all the use he could out of it, and traded it along with some other information for the location of a powerful Nascent blessing that seemed to kill swordsmen and eject others - apparently those who were impure on their sword path would be killed outright, but he located a swordsman without peer from the Joyful Blacksmiths, and sold him the location in return for a Spirit Suit (+10 CY), a magical suit that could pour energy from Spirit Stones into rapidly - full of Spirit Stones, to boot. The suit was almost dead, and he used the last of its energies to push himself forward even more.

The swordsman survived, and Konstantinos managed to use the goodwill he had earned to get another Blacksmith to assist him in repairing the Spirit Suit, though only sufficiently for Qi Condensation cultivators. This was useful to a Strength Purity cultivator he met, however, and so he managed to trade it for some information on a powerful pill, which he sold to a fellow Golden Devil. His fellow was at the very peak of Foundation Establishment, with silver streaks in his hair and beard, but was quite poor. He offered to give Konstantinos half the pill if he could retrieve it - Konstantinos agreed, and his new ally managed to retrieve the Dantian-Satiating Firebelly Gutblast Pill (+20 CY), a wonderfully powerful cultivation aid that unfortunately expelled all impurities the... ordinary way.

After spending some Spirit Stones on a series of latrines, he found that the location itself could be bartered away, for the pills seemed to regenerate with each challenger who returned. So he sold it to a group of Qiguai scions in return for a peculiar drop of bronze blood they had found, which they thought was useless to them. The Inheritance Blood (+40 CY) was a simple gift left by a long-lost ancestor who had distilled the blood of hundreds of beasts into a powerful cultivation aid, and used his arts to lock it to the use of those with the Blood of Bronze only. With this, Konstantinos was able to rise into the 4-Pillar realm.

Unfortunately for him, the Qiguai scions were badly incompatible with the pills, gaining little cultivation but spending a great deal of time in the latrines. As they recovered, they came for him, and Konstantinos thought it the better part of valour to leave the Qiguai Realm, his gains quite intact.

Cao Wei
Fate: When the Blood Mists fell from the sky, many who saw it found themselves falling into a berserk insanity, twisted into demons of the blood path driven to consume their fellows. When a once-loyal centurion was so affected, he consumed his century to remove his hunger and then upon realizing what he had done, chose to flee justice. Cao Wei, genius of the goat-men tribes, was tasked to hunt him down and end his life before he could shame himself any further.

These are times of Legend. Mists of Blood descend from the skies and the Heavens wake again, while a Bronzed King strides across the sky. There are many in this age that are born to destiny, rising to meet the challenges of the world like a carp would rise to surpass a waterfall. Yet for every living legend, there are countless numbers that are destined to perish in the attempt to ascend to those heady heights. It is a shame that Cao Wei, of the goat-men tribe had the fate to be one of those fallen legends.

It is a shame indeed for heaven.

When he left to pursue his quarry, he found him quickly but Cao Wei was newly ascended and his foe was an experienced centurion, further gorged with stolen power. They fought and the traitor killed him quickly, striking him down before seeing to his own recovery. The flesh of a goat-man disgusted him and so he chose to consume another.

But Cao Wei was too stubborn to die.

He lay there, bleeding out and spared from death only by his enemy's inattention. He should have lain there, despite his struggle and simply perished if Cao Wei was only stubborn. However, Cao Wei was also a genius who sought to push his people to greater heights and so, more than any other, he sought to learn from the mistakes of his predecessors.

The last goat-man talent was brought low by crippling and so, in his cleverness, Cao Wei had prepared a countermeasure should he face a similar fate. Through the use of a treasure, he recovered enough to stand and then before his enemy could react, he struck him down. Then badly wounded, he still manged to return to the clan with proof of his deeds. Then he used the things he had learned from the ordeal to fortify his first pillar as he recovered from the wounds. Chrysanthos Krimta
Fate: The Krimta family is a beleagured part of the clan, Merchants by trade even while integrated into the Legions. Not glorious, but a necessary backbone for the welfare of the Clan at large. The Golden Flower - as the second Foundation Establishment Expert to their name - had moved to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the Scorpion Trade Palace with their own personal caravans, and receiving dispensation to assign a Century as the escort for the long journey. However, greed is ever the downfall of the unprepared, and Chrysanthos found himself convinced by a similarily ambitious Junior to strike out on their own, and attempt to chart a new route through the heart of the desert, drawing a line straight from the Trade Palace to the heartlands of the Clan territory. Through Bandit Lands. Unprepared for the intensity of our former allies own greed, the trade caravan found itself endlessly battered by Bandit raids, driving most of them off with only minor harm save for a singular raid lead by multiple Foundation Establishment Bandits that would have seen Chrysanthos dead, save for the use of a treasure. The Caravan was forced to trade for much just to keep its own alive, but in that regard they succeeded. Arriving at the Uncast Molds after much peril, though immeasurably poorer. The Caravan barely broke even, but the Golden Flower still kept their life, and even advanced their cultivation despite their injuries.

Achille Adephos
Fate: Achille's venture into the Yuan Realm was peculiar. The trials were now ever-running with the influx of Qi from the sky, and the trials themselves seemed to be constantly replenished. Achille faced only a single trial, a set of burning Light-Qi cannons that fired at mathematical intervals determined by a complex puzzle. By solving it he could advance, and at first he did so with ease. The first half of the trial was simple enough, and despite having been solved a mere sixty years prior, the trial contained an Advancement Pill (+60 CY). A simple yet extraordinarily powerful pill, enough to push his cultivation forward decades when eaten. However, things did not go so well after that. The second half of the puzzles were fiendishly complex, and he twice attempted to solve them, and was twice almost wounded, avoiding the wounds only through the use of two powerful treasures.

After that he managed to solve the puzzle, and reached the end. The Memory-Cloning Art (+7 Impact) was a truly powerful one. A segment of your memory - or rather, your skills - could be transformed into a clone, and it could operate autonomously without you. The clones were more fragile and slower than the original, meaning they were less useful for combat than one might think. For an array-master it meant he could be in many places at once. The only real weakness was that you lost the skills placed into the clone while it operated were temporarily lost, and if they were killed, those skills would be lost permanently and would have to be relearned.

Wei Feng
Fate: Wei Feng and the Qiguai Secret Realm. With the birth of the Great Era, light shone through the sky-sea above, at least in parts. Searing, burning Light Qi that was death to Golden Devils and Blood Path cultivators alike, yet those daring the Realm had found themselves enhanced in some minor ways, able to strike above their station. This light alone was a blessing, not to mention the greater blessings that were soon to come.

Wei Feng followed one such lucky cultivator in the light, and felt the burning to come. Where others sought out other opportunities, his experience with Light Qi and the Light Phoenix Constitution brought to mind a mad idea. The Heavens sought to purify him from existence, so why not use its strength to purify himself in different ways?

For some time Wei Feng meditated under the burning light, feeling it sear his veins and body, and using his regeneration to fight back against it endless, directing it to the weaknesses within his blood and himself. For someone who could not simply be healed at will, this would have been deadly, but Wei Feng used his nature to his advantange. In the first month, he managed to purify the Bronze Blood within him, gaining the Silver Tinges (+2 Impact). His fingernails and hair turned silver, as did his toenails, lashes, and eyebrows. The rest remained Bronze, but he had purified his blood to some extent, gaining to a small degree the benefits of the true Blood of Silver.

As the light faded he sought another, greater beam of light. This time focusing it on his flesh. With this, his Light Phoenix Constitution was made into something greater, something born from fury and purification. The Purifying Phoenix Constitution (+4 Impact) was the evolution of the constitution. The same burst of light as he died could be used on simple injuries, repeatedly - as the emulation of the Heavenly Fury he had suffered was far more powerful than ordinary Light Qi.

Lastly, he found a great beam of light, and sought to purify his methods. While not the greatest wielder of Qi sorcery, this last and deadliest shaft of light allowed him to develop the Silver-Fire (+4 Impact), a silvery fire that wreathed his body and could be concentrated where his silver extremities were. It was a domineering fire that burnt the Qi of the enemy, turning it into energy that was attracted to his phoenix-nature. Their burnt Qi would turn into more fuel for the Silver-Fire, and with each hit he struck, the stronger his blows would become. An opponent difficult to defeat unless destroyed quickly.

Yet he had overextended himself, and the light redoubled its efforts to kill him. But for a treasure he would've truly died, so exhausted was he, and he found himself badly wounded for his troubles, escaping the Secret Realm shortly afterwards.

Xiuying Ten Jiang
Fate: Xiuying entered the Secret Realm, and found her way to a long-described door, locked against all but sword cultivators. She cut it, and it opened, taking her into a place beyond space, between the Seas themselves. There she saw terrible things, visions of swords destroying worlds and shattering lives, cutting apart souls and beliefs and the very stuff of the universe itself. The inheritance of one of the old Sword Dao Seekers from before the arrival of the Sea-Conquering Army, with two techniques left to her. The first was the Spatial Slash (+6 Impact). As simple as it sounded, one could cut space itself with this techique. Difficult to execute but practically irresistable, it could cut almost anything in half - including distance itself. Without mastery, the slash would merely take her somewhere, but somewhere could be a useful escape. Such a powerful technique would drain all of her Qi Reserves, however.

The last echoes of the Dao Seeker were there. Naming himself Senior-Apprentice Brother Long Fang, he made Xiuying cook him noodles, even though a spirit could not eat. More than a mere Will, the spirit smelled the noodles and tossed them through his ghostly form, finding it most entertaining. As his new Junior Sister, he demanded she clean up his gravestone and do a hundred laps of the bizarre space between spaces before he taught her more.

Six and a half years later she was done, and Fang taught her the Severing Strike (+6 Impact). Anything, he said, could be severed. The Severing Strike separated anything from anything else, though he noted with displeasure as a Qi cultivator she'd be limited by her reserves of Qi. But even as she was, she could begin separating a thought from a mind, a minor wound from a body, the use of a technique from an enemy. Difficult to use and expensive, but in the right circumstances it would be completely decisive. A true Dao Seeker of the Sword Dao should be able to use it to separate actions from consequences and laws from worlds, he mentioned. He then invoked the power of Fundamental Law, pushing forward Xiuying forty years in her cultivation in a moment (+40 CY), before sending her on her way.

Zeno Angelus
Fate: Zeno entered the Qiguai Secret Realm, and there found one of the Favored. These blessed children of Heaven found it tiresomely easy to shatter Golden Devil cultivators, and this one was no different. Hunting him for sport, he was forced to flee into a crack in space, somewhere that tore at him and slowly ripped his very body apart, the Favored leaving a small alarm array there to notify him if Zeno left. Agonized and waiting to die, at the moment of his death a voice appeared, informing him this was a legacy of Void Immortal Bora Seihyeong, a human from the isle of Joseon, one of the Sea Monster Islands. Though the islands had expanded greatly ten thousand years ago, they had apparently always existed, and Bora informed Zeno that he was giving Zeno his legacy due to the Great Era descending. Two hundred million years ago, Bora had challenged the Heavens, and lost dramatically. On dying, he left a legacy that would pass down to the next person to stumble upon it during a Great Era, and so Zeno was its recipient.

Firstly was the Void Key (+7 Impact), a peculiar key marked only by its complete absence in space. One could not perceive it, or even remember that it existed unless grasped - only a mnemonic Bora taught Zeno allowed him to routinely grasp for it even though he could not recall its existence. It could, in theory, open the way between the Seas, though that power had long left it. What was left of the ancient artifact could open portals that would shatter and twist the space around them, killing anything they struck. While somewhat slow, if used as a surprise attack - or on a temporarily immobilized enemy - it was practically a certain kill.

Bora also poured his cultivation and energies into Zeno, (+50 CY) which pushed his cultivation forward. Unfortunately, this in unison with the shattering space around them risked Zeno's life, and as the space was about to cripple him permanently he was forced to use a treasure to retreat, unable to grasp everything Bora was willing to give him.

Aristoteles Kalokagathos
Fate: Emboldened by his growing cultivation, Aris traveled to the South-East to put down a small Jingshen holdout. The Centurion was painfully reminded of a lesson all who live in this world must heed - there's always someone better than you. At the hands of a mysterious masked Expert with no backup, Aris was soundly defeated, and his Century decimated four times over, forcing him into a shameful retreat.

yan
Fate: Yan suffered in his Single Pillar progression. He entered the Qiguai Secret Realm, and there he faced one of the Favored of Heaven, a Foundation Establishment cultivator from the Saber Sect. Such an enemy should be beneath him, yet the Favored - one Konstantia Kurkua, struck him down mercilessly. Her strength was beyond that any Foundation Establishment cultivator should have, and it seemed to resonate with his Single Pillar, multiplying itself as she fought him. Three merciless thrusts and he was forced to use a treasure and retreat from the Secret Realm, wounded all the same.

Antonius Emmanuel Eleanora
Fate: Antonius's entry to the Qiguai Realm was eventful, and marked by the enmity he found with a whirling eddy of broken space. It chased him from the ground into the sky and back again, seeking to grind him to pieces for some crime he was not sure he had committed. While unsure as to why it chased him, he was able to put it to good use.

Two ancient chests had been long-locked in an accessible part of the Realm, but unbreakable and unlockable to any, so they had been left. He managed to trick the eddy of space into the chests, retrieving two minor items. The Explosion Talisman (+1 Impact), a simple exploding talisman that exploded when read. Its true value was in that when it did so it returned to the owner, ready to be used again. It never need recharging, and would always return to the owner when damaged sufficiently, completely fine - until that owner's death.

The second item was the Lush Peach (+1 Impact), a fruit that attached to any tree or plant, draining the Qi from it. It would regenerate itself, ready to be eaten down to the pit again once it had absorbed enough Qi. The Qi itself was peculiarly unsuited for cultivation as it all came through at once, but could be used to recharge a cultivator's empty dantian during or after battle.

From here, Antonius ran from the space, and found an upside-down tree in the sky growing off an island that tried to kill him. He attached the Peach to it to drain and weaken it, and stole from it the single apple it had been growing. This magnificent fruit gave him boundless energy when eaten (+30 cultivation), and as he ate it, the tree grew infuriated. The space reached him, however, and as he danced around the tree it tore it apart. From its very core was a single piece of tree-heart wood (+2 Impact) that could be fashioned into a useful weapon or a small piece of armour that would be tremendously strong and resilient.

From here, he fled, the snarl of space growing faster and larger, aiming to chase him down. He managed to reach the exit just in time, and thankfully it did not follow him further.

Turn 13 Fates - The Secrets of the Underworld
Sheng Yu had set missions, and it was finally, two decades later he had received his full reports.

He drifted over the first one. The Western Redstone Keep had kept a moderate amount of useful Spirit Artillery, guarded by some Jingshen holdouts. The traps had claimed fourteen Foundation Experts before they'd discovered they didn't trigger for Disciples, and so they'd sent some of their finest Qi Condensation cultivators in to disable the traps and retrieve the artillery pieces. Modern, easily moved, and efficient on Qi, they were artillery pieces Sheng Yu personally wanted. Being able to carry siege weaponry with him would enhance one mobile Legion considerably.

They had done moderately well. Yes, a Moderate Success. Half or so of the artillery had fallen to a trap, so Yu was unlikely to get the absurdly fast artillery Legion he had desired. A Legion of elites who could deploy immense firepower anywhere, though for an exorbitant cost. He would, he thought, distribute them out to the Mobile Legions more equally, to give them a mild boost in defense where needed, as well as allowing them to more easily crack certain defenses.

The Foundation cultivators on the other hand had been sent to retrieve the Light Qi that had so long plagued the Clan. His hand went up to his face - he had been healed, the Grand Elder himself taking an interest over the decades, but so many had been lost to that horrific plague of Light. Yu had ended up having most of his skull and face removed, only to have it regenerated through a wide variety of alchemical arts. Elder Duca had managed to keep him alive through the ordeal, but it had been... unsettling.

Yes, to use the Light Qi against their enemies would be cruel... but expedient nonetheless.

What would've been perhaps an uninspiring success could ultimately be credit to three names. Kokkinos, Euaerizo, and Floros. Floros most of all. The fact that the abomination of a girl had somehow managed to hold onto the Light Qi until it could be safely transported into Clan holdings was a Triumph of no small measure. The trap that had been set for them could be reset, or... well, there could be many uses. He had thought of ways to transfer it into cannonry, Destasia was demanding the right to grant it sentience somehow and use it as a guardian for the Devil Bee border. No doubt they'd bring their concerns up in the Council meeting to come.

He groaned, and stood up, leaving the rest of the paperwork there. He could review it later... he needed to get out of his tent.

David Pupillus
Fate: As was starting to become his way, David attempted to use the art of diplomacy to convince some of the Jingshen holdouts to surrender. Unfortunately for him, this time luck wasn't on his side and the negotiations were cut short. In the middle of parley, he stepped into a trap. It would have injured him badly, if not killing him but he managed to escape through the clever use of a treasure. The encounter still left him lightly wounded and made the remaining Jingshen reluctant to speak with him again.

Helel Ben Sahar
Fate: After healing from the injuries he had gained from the Qiguai Secret Realm, Helel decided to investigate the secrets the Jingshen may have left behind in the Underworld Spirit Palace. Having already studied the results of the All-Blinding Array and possessing a prodigious talent for array-crafting, he was put to work dismantling the traps re-purposed by the wounded expert Jingshen Seo. Unlike others, who encountered a powerful singular array or artifact that they could take for their own, Helel faced a comprehensive battery of hostile arrays that pushed his skills to their limits. The insight he gained into weaknesses and imperfections allowed him to greatly progress in his cultivation (+34 CY).

Lipita Delphi
Fate: Lipita was part of the retrieval team, working to gain the artillery from Redstone Keep for the Clan. Her contributions were in three parts - firstly, her capture of three 9th Heavenstage Jingshen scions who had holed up in part of the keep. Extracting information from them, she was then able to clear one of the largest traps on the way to the artillery. Eventually, she was spearheading the charge to recapture the artillery itself, only to realise that the trap set there was about to go off. She thought she had a way to disarm the Stone-Melting Fire trap, and separated herself from the group, running through dangerous traps and evading a Jingshen Foundation expert - the wounded Jingshen Seo - to enter the room where she believed the trap's off-switch to be located.

She was incorrect, but instead found herself in sole possession of a spatial ring that had been hidden there by Jingshen Junjie after it had been discharged in battle a few centuries prior, as it had required repair and had only in the last few years been made fully operational - and was still being tested when the Palace fell. The Spatial Cannon Ring (+12 Impact).

An entire array of artillery with sufficient power to blast apart Core Formation Elders and even disrupt Nascent Soul strikes when fully charged and operational, it could fire massive fusillades capable of breaking open walls, shattering arrays, and generally wreaking havoc. The cannons were enclosed within the spatial ring, and could fire out of it without issue, able to project a space from which they fired in front of the user. However, they were far more expensive to use than ordinary cannons owing to their spatial nature, and the cost to charge them up to destroy Core Formation Elders would be far, far beyond the means of any Qi Condensation Juniors. As an item for turning wealth into an absolute combat advantage, however, it is unmatched.

Instead as those around him faced the Jingshen Holdouts, braving traps and fighting beasts formed of Light Qi, Choiros somehow always found himself in the eye of the storm, moving through the Underworld Spirit Palace with a strange sort of tranquility. He helped disarm some traps, he consumed a few Lightbeasts but he mostly used the time to begin healing from his injuries. Such was the serenity he had achieved that even wounded, he was almost able to cultivate up to the limits of the Eighth Heavenstage(+37CY), only one or two years of consolidation off from the next.

Tarun Acmonides
Fate: After a successful misadventure in the Ice Qi Caverns, Tarun Acmonides found himself in the other side of the clan's new territories, delving into the Underworld Spirit Palace to find its secrets. Young as he was, he was little help against the traps and weapons left behind by the Jingshen until they encountered a curious array that, perhaps inspired by the All-Blinding Array, used Light Qi to burn the members of the clan if they dared approach.

It had been marked as too much trouble and left for seniors to deal with, but when Tarun approached, it didn't burn him as it did the others. Instead, it acted anomalously allowing him to approach it and dismantle it. As he later discovered, upon encountering the young legionary's molten physique, the array assumed that he had already been targeted allowing him to be spared its effect.

It was later integrated into his armor, granting him the Bloodline Devastation Array(+8 Impact) that drew upon the flames of purification within his body to send out beams of Fire Qi that would burn his enemies. The speed and intensity of the effect would rise with the strength of his own condition, granting him a powerful and reliable ranged weapon. In the wake of this success, Tarun cultivated with the Essence of Darkest Winter which combined with the increased ambient qi, allowed him to breakthrough to the Ninth Heavenstage (+34 CY).

Victor Wulf
Fate: As the inheritor of a potent lost bloodline variant, young Victor has often found himself sought out for samples and tests. Selling large quantities of blood or bone marrow is not the most glorious way to advance one's standing, but the returns are reliable, and bodies of Bronze replenish themselves quickly.

Unfortunately for Victor, the arts of Golden Devil doctors are known to be a bit more brutish than those of standard humans, focusing more on thoroughness than gentleness and relying on the superior healing of the bloodline to endure the treatment. As such, more than once he came into contact with poorly-cleaned needles, mixing trace amounts of hundreds of other Devils' blood in his veins over the years. The result was sad but predictable.

Victor, unknowingly contracting multiple bloodborne diseases, slowly fell ill over the course of a decade. With Qi Condensation-level treatment failing to take, Victor sought more funds so as to afford Foundation-level care instead, and so went on that dangerous salvage mission in search of more wealth.

Ranging out farther and deeper than his peers, the Legionnaire came upon an untouched stockpile of Mid-Grade Spirit Stones, intended as the power source for an entire battery of Foundation-level cannons. Not one to hesitate when presented with opportunity, Victor cultivated madly when not searching, attempting to cure himself through the restorative transformation of the Tenth Heavenstage.

So burdened by disease and so many shards of conflicting bloodlines, his body failed to purify itself, repeatedly backsliding every time he was about to enter the Tenth and growing more infirm each time. On his fifth attempt to enter the first Unorthodox realm, Victor pushed through for a few minutes, his body working at a frenzied pace to purge itself. While he did backslide again, by that time he had not only been cured of disease; he had synthesized all of those disparate bloodlines into his own, compressing and evolving it into the Tarnished Bronze Bloodline (+8 Impact).

He is now at the Alloyed Body stage of concentration, the absolute highest possible concentration for Victor's Great Realm in the modern day. In addition to its the sheer physical power and resilience this grants, the Dull variant's anti-qi defenses have also been elevated and expanded. With his entire body infused by the Bronze, his qi itself carries the same power to a lesser extent, a sort of 'null-aspect' qi which specializes in degrading, disrupting and scattering all qi other than itself. Thus, not only is his body more resistant to qi, but his techniques excel at breaking through the techniques of others. However, this dissonance has a drawback - participation in formations becomes more difficult, and the resulting projection is weaker than it otherwise would be. On the bright side, these formations, thanks to carrying Victor's qi, have the same advantages as his other techniques.

With this newfound power, the Legionnaire disabled many traps with ease, often triggering them on purpose and smothering them with his own body, clearing the way for other salvagers and speeding up the operation.

Aliki Floros
Fate: It was the most peculiar moment for Aliki, as she managed to retrieve the Light Qi itself. Using her own arts and body to form itself into internal mirrors, her attempt at weakening and consuming the Qi was a failure, but her ability to transport it out was tremendous. The beasts formed of the Light Qi were cleared before her, and apart from one minor battle with a massive wasp formed of pure light, she was able to retrieve the Qi and bring it to the Clan's holding artifact above. A tremendous creature of claws and fang, the massive Clawed Furious Light Wolf batted apart the party, smashing them towards dangerous eddies of Qi-drain. She managed to slow and distract the creature, letting them pass even as it chased her into one such eddy. There, both she and it were drained, though she managed to escape, using a greater velocity on entering to allow her to leave suddenly, while the wolf died. Her loss of Qi meant that she was forced to return to the expedition's entrance, though she managed to snag the wolf's peculiar Light Core, a Beast Core made from Light that she was able to trade for many useful cultivation resources (+20 CY).

Savvas Nicolidis
Fate: Savvas was a ghost in the most literal sense, still disconnected from his body. While he had found a healing treasure capable of returning him to good health, it required a great mass of Qi to be used. Savvas was the third to return, as he managed to ambush an entire group of Lightbeasts, using the healing artifact he had gained to fuse their semi-living Light Qi with his ghostly form. This had the effect of forcing him back into his body - and leaving the expedition. When he found himself back in his body, he had somehow gained the Ghostly Transformation, a momentary transformation into a ghost (+1 Impact). Lihua Kokkinos
Fate: Lihua was one of the two who managed to unravel the great trap for Aliki - Aliki was able to consume and reflect the light within herself, whereas Lihua used her Fascimile Key to command the light. While the great mass of Qi was unruly and defied being commanded, she was able to use the key to deflect and destroy many of the Light-Beasts formed from pieces of the Qi that had disintegrated and escaped the mirrortrap. Many she slew in a great and vigorous battle, and a single beast managed to survive. The Burning Light Hawk (+4 Impact) was no true beast, but a piece of recalcitrant Qi that had gained semi-sentience. By defeating it with her Key she was able to bring it to heel. An incredibly fast bird, capable of travelling tens of miles in a single second, it could carry messages and strike her enemies down with light equally well, though it could not serve as a transport. Lacking overmuch intelligence, unfortunately, it was difficult to command after it left her presence. However, her cultivation was lacking - the expense of feeding and healing the mysterious creature meant her cultivation resources were barely adequate for her own needs for decades - eventually she was able to build an array in which it could rest to recharge from sunlight.

Simon Euaerizo
Fate: Simon likewise fought at the last, fighting off hordes of Lightbeasts as the three - Aliki, Simon, and Lihua - all aimed to deliver Aliki to the mass of Qi. Many of their allies were holding off the hordes even so, and the traps and whorls of Qi-draining zones as they had travelled through the massive, calcified blood vessel had meant many of those on the mission had been forced to stop, or peel off. He discovered the artifact holding the Qi in place, and disabled it. As Aliki absorbed the Qi to deliver it upwards, he took it with them - a spare storage in case the Clan's measures failed. Afterwards it was determined the artifact itself was of relatively modest power, and had been primarily amplified by a massive array. As such, Simon was left with it as his possession. The Twin Mirrors of Time (+4 Impact) are rather slow to set up, and difficult to use, and can only be at most a few hundred feet apart. However, anything between them has the flow of time reduced on them a thousandfold, permitting their use as a temporary prison or even a wall of sorts. It does not, peculiarly, preserve the longevity of a cultivator.

Minervina Barda
Fate: Minervina was the second-last to turn back. She lured out a horde of Lightbeasts into a smaller blood vessel leading off the main capilliary, and fled them for days, unable to poison or destroy them. It was there she found a shard of something pure and magnificent. The Raw Turtleblood Droplet (+70 CY), a magnificent treasure capable of pushing her cultivation forward nearly a century. With it, she rose, and found herself easily destroying the Lightbeasts, each strike aimed and hitting perfectly without effort or even much focus. She left as she was far behind the expedition and could not catch up, being nearly a week behind - and needing time to digest her gains besides. Qinglong Shu 23 - Rise Up The Waterfall
Qinglong Shu 23 - Rise Up The Waterfall

"Mommy, mommy, tell me a story."

The mother blinked, looking down at the small child tugging at her leg. She chuckled, just as an attendant hurried inside, out of breath chasing the hyperactive heir. Lowering her head in apology, she reached out for the small Shu.

"Young mistress, your mother-"

Before she could even touch her however, her mother picked her up. Shu let out a giggle as mommy nuzzled her hair with her face.

"It is fine. I always have time for her."

"Yay!" Shu yelled in excitement, raising her arms. It earned her a cute laugh from her own mom. Soon and swiftly, they found some privacy in Shu's room. Gently laying her down, her mother rested right next to her, carefully brushing Shu's hair.

"Do you have any preferences?"

In response, the small girl shook her head.

"Nu-uh! All stories are great, if they are from you!"

"Flattery gets you everywhere." Her mother's smile wavered a bit, gaining a serious tone as she looked Shu deep into her eyes."But there is something you have to promise me."

Shu tilted her head, wondering what this was about.

"Never let anything or anyone change you, my sweet girl."

The little girl froze. She bit her lip, quivering, as memories forced themselves back to the forefront of her mind. The memories of her beating another boy up without mercy. Averting her eyes, she sniffed.

"But…I'm a bad girl."

Her cheeks were pressed together and gently her face was turned towards her mother's, who shook her own head.

"No, you are good. You just became angry. That's…well, not fine, but natural. Denying yourself is even worse."

She didn't get it. But she didn't want to make mommy sad either by not promising. So she raised her pinkie finger, uncertain, but still putting on a smile.

"O-Okay, mommy."

Hooking her own pinkie around hers, her mother kissed her forehead.

"That's good." Humming in thought, she looked at the ceiling. Then she clapped her hands together, a chuckle escaping her. "Now then…This story is called, 'Rise Up The Waterfall'…"

///

Shu groaned as she stretched her legs, her body low as she pushed her weight against it a few times. Her eyes were closed but she could feel the stares and mutterings at her person. For a place called out to be a death land among death lands, there were many that climbed through the mountains to reach the Qiguai lands. Many of them idiots, herself included, riches or no riches. Some were more idiotic than others as they provoked each other, talked shit and generally were overall unpleasant. She winced as she saw two cultivators being broken up after one smashed the other's teeth out. Naturally they got kicked out immediately, for no conflict was allowed on Qiguai grounds. Once inside the Secret Realm, everything was fair game, but until then? Neutral grounds were neutral grounds. Maybe it was their nerves but that was no excuse to do meaningless violence like that. Anyway, many knew a Golden Devil when they spotted them. Apparently. Somehow. Maybe it was the Bronze Qi within her that gave it away. Or she smelled Golden Devil-ish. Either that or she was infamous, even though it made no sense. She didn't have a big reputation or any great deeds herself. Not any she knew of. Biggest thing she ever did was beat some Jingshen heads in, but literally all Golden Devils did that. Perhaps it was something in her clothing, but she dressed like most locals of the region, so that couldn't be it. Licking her lips, she shrugged. Changing her position, sitting down on the ground and trying to reach the tip of her toes with her fingers, she continued her stretches. After all, there was no way she would have time to do these once the real deal was starting. Now if only more people would follow her example and stop staring at other people or comment about them. She sighed out.

Oh well, let them stare. Let them talk. As long as they only did that. With that thought, her ears twitched as a particular set of words were exchanged. She opened one eye idly, imagining the two of them to be Ming. Immediately, anger rose in her chest and her eye began to glow azure and inhuman unbeknownst to her. She rose to her feet faster than usual on purpose, stretching her arms. The two individuals quickly looked away, nervously increasing their distance to her. Shu cracked a grin. That's what she thought. Maybe she was overly paranoid, sending looks at everyone who only thought the slightest bit funny about her. Imagining them to get horribly maimed like they were her aunt was probably mean in some form…but considering how hard Katha's teeth were kicked in, Shu was not much for belief in her fellow cultivators. After all, she was better than her when she did this, better gear, better everything and she still almost died. It added quite nicely to the last advice Elder Lang gave her.

"Everything is your enemy. Not only other cultivators that are driven by greed, hate or sheer stupidity, but also the realm itself. Anything you know about the Laws of Nature are merely suggestions it shall discard at its leisure." He took a whiff from his pipe."That which is known to be safe to consume or touch is lethal, and vice versa. In general, I'd recommend to keep mobile. Can't allow anyone or anything to get the jump on you if you just move on swiftly."

Shu nodded a few times in understanding, knees resting on the ground. She raised her hand, humming thoughtfully.

"Soooo, keep my senses open, keep my mind adaptable and never stop moving…Anything else?"

A wry smile appeared on the old man's face.

"Yes. Don't die." A pause. "And trust your instincts."

She grimaced at the last words. They were not helpful whatsoever. The former was such a major 'duh' moment she was this close to insulting the Elder. Sure, maybe if she was someone like Chang who actively provoked and flirted with death, that warning would have been needed. But her? She was a regular, sane person. And the latter? It sounded basically like "trust in luck." Maybe they believed too much in her talents. Either way, she put her hands on her hips and patiently waited for her turn, looking around in idle boredom. She had to hand it to the Qiguai clan. They knew how to make a waiting room tacky. Well, it was more of a palace than a waiting room, with all the spizzaz and what not. Golden decour, jewels shining in the walls. It almost made one forget that two thirds of the people here would die horribly or pull a Katha and regret their life decisions forever as they agonize in a sick bed they might never leave. Shu slapped her cheeks a few times when she realized her hands were shaking. Cool it, Qinglong! She faced Aretaphila Myia for fuck's sake! Well, less faced and more entertained her, but lightning to the face and getting off basically scot free had to mean something! Besides, others looked way more confident than her and their level didn't even compare. Like Chang just outside, coincidentally considering she just thought about him. He was scratching his skin open like a complete mania-

Shu did a double take. Rubbed her eyes. Then she gaped openly. Holy crap, the shithead was actually here. At his level. Wasn't he like at the third stage? The third! Sure, he had his fancy gauntlets and she believed that the Secret Realms scaled, kinda sorta, but…wow, he really was trying to get himself killed, huh? She subtly took a step back, trying to put more people between them. No use getting into more headaches by interacting with him just before entering. Heavens knew what kind of aneurysm she'd get from him this time. Not to mention teamwork wasn't even allowed. Or rather impossible to plan ahead of time, given the random nature of the Qiguai Realm and the starting locations. Not that she wanted to team up with him in the first place. She wanted to live, thank you very much, and he'd probably find a way to get the two of them killed. He just had those vibes. She sighed, shaking her head. All she could do was wish him good luck. For now, every Golden Devil for themselves. Therefore, she concentrated on taking deep breaths. In. And out. She was in the zone. She was untouchable. Nothing could break her focus as the world became a void around her-

"754."

Shit, that was her number. She definitely did not yelp and run faster than she had to when she practically appeared before the man with the list in his hands.

"Pree-sent!" Her voice cracked as she saluted. Puffing her cheeks up, she tried her best not to show her blush. Thankfully, the clerk's eyes were more dead than a corpse, not even looking up at all.

"Usually I have to explain all the rules, but considering there are like dozens more of you here, I'll be quick. My break is up in a few minutes. Do you know what the deal here is? Did you listen to the words of my colleague when she spoke up to all of you?"

Well, who was she to deny a man his break? Especially with how some life returned in his eyes. Hope, hope that she actually listened and could just go now. She nodded obediently.

"Yup."

He nodded once and stepped to the side, revealing the rather magical looking portal in front. Shu tilted her head, taking in the energy. She unconsciously licked her lips, saliva gathering in her mouth. She felt her jaw twitch a few times, as if trying to contain something. How did it even work? To reduce distance as a mere joke, to create a whole new world within a world. What was needed to create it? How much effort? What type of Qi? How many people-

"Great. Have fun."

Blinking for a moment, she cleared her throat awkwardly. Wiping her mouth, she massaged her cheeks, trying to get a neutral expression back on her face. Right. His break. She sent an apologizing smile at the man, but he was already looking down on his list again. Right, right, questions for later. Adventurer and death first. Shu took a deep breath. Then, with a battlecry of the ages, she lowered her center of gravity before leaping into the jaws of the Qiguai Secret Realm.

"Alley hoop!"

Thus, the world shifted, one replacing the other, as Shu disappeared, leaping into suicidal glory and power, for the mere mortal, petty desire of killing someone very very hard.

////

The second the shift of climate hit her, from the pleasant spring warmth dropping down to zero and below, she immediately breathed, time slowing down for her. Her inner Qi shifted to keep her warm no matter what. The Fire within her worked double time as it suffused her core and spread through her blood out into her skin. It was a wise choice it would turn out, as she could feel the air literally melting from her own heat. As if existence itself around her was made out of snow and couldn't handle the warmth that radiated from her. Whew, that was close. Mentally she wiped her forehead. How embarrassing it would have been. She could see the news spreading in her imagination.

Qinglong Shu, one second inside the Secret Realm, and died horribly as a popsicle. Doing a Katha that was beyond a Katha. Heh. Hehe.

Her smile vanished. Not out of any guilt for the mental joke, but because she felt a lurch as time resumed to normal. Her body was forced downwards due to gravity. Her eyes widened and she spread her arms out, flailing around in surprise.

"Whoawhoawhoawhoa-

Out of all the things Shu expected to happen first, trying to keep her balance as she slid down the frozen side of a mountain was not one of them. A faint memory resurfaced in her mind. Of her using a rather terribly made sled, going down a snowy hill, only to faceplant a tree. Good times. Good cry too.

Well, better not repeat that as an adult on a larger, more deadly scale. As she somewhat found her balance, leaning forward as she skated down, she glanced behind her. She whistled, the trail she left behind already freezing back to its original state, as if it hadn't melted in the first place. Place really must have been freezing. Cracking her neck she looked ahead and her eyes went wide. Fauna covered in white, with green peeking out, that she has never seen before. A wide horizon revealing itself like a painting of another world. From her view in such height, she could spot literal desserts next to thriving jungles, with next to no transition inbetween. It was like red and blue blocks drawn next to each other. Not to mention the things that were actually floating in the air, defying gravity. Flying tigers being devoured by even bigger birds. Razor sharp teeth munching on the flesh as they flew rather close to one of the many suns in the air. Then they turned their crimson red eyes towards her, mouth wet with blood and saliva.

Shu blinked at the last one before smirking as they dove down at her, like spears dropped from a massive wall. Well, who was she to deny them? She had plenty for them to stomach. For example, crushing defeat! Exhaling she buckled her knees. Then, despite the slide she was riding on turning more and more into a straight wall, ninety degrees to the ground, stuck to the frozen ice with her feet. She kept her mouth slightly open, eying her attackers. Not yet. A bit closer…just a bit… They flapped their wings and suddenly spun, adding a drill motion to their steel like beaks. Shu laughed at the sight. Then her muscles bulged for an instance before she shot off from the wall, arms wide. She could see the monster's instincts, or whatever rationality they had, trying to guide them away. Their eyes were filled with shock as something invaded their space, their monopoly of the air. Alas, it was too late as she smashed her fists together, bumping them into each other, with all the gore that came from splattering those flying chickens. Her momentum lost, she began to descend straight down, for life did not grant her flight or any wings. Whatever feathers weren't utterly smashed surely wouldn't do the trick either.

Fortunately for her, only mortals had to worry about dying by falling. Curling herself into a ball, she closed her eyes before snapping them open. Earth joined Fire. Like the miraculous events of a star falling down from the heavens, she exploded just like a meteor upon impact. For a moment, the world stood silent, as if observing the crater and the smoke. Then with a swift arm movement, the air cleared, revealing a Qinglong shaking her knees with naught an injury. Oh, they certainly ached, shaking a bit from the impact, but no tearing or breaking. So that was nice. Rolling her shoulders she got out of the hole she made. The only thing she saw were some trees with green needles instead of leaves.

Then the trees attacked her. Because why not, huh? Like a line of archers, the trees unleashed a volley. Shu raised an eyebrow, putting a note of that weird plant in her mind, before she let her arms hang loosely, her posture relaxed.

Earth was replaced by Water. Feet of fire and arms of water, both soft, both swift, both dancing. She drew circles in the ground, burning it and causing steam in the frozen land. At the same time, her hands acted like the tips of a whip, slapping and even snatching needles. Eventually, the barrage ended. What was left were trees utterly naked now, how lewd, and Shu with a fuckload of needles around her and between her fingers. She held them up to her face, her eyes narrowing before she giggled Green, glowy fluids were being released from some cracked needles.

"Haha-HA! Poison, ey?"

Shu wasn't sure if the force of those plants could've penetrated her skin, but if they did, they would have certainly messed up her Qi system from what little she learned while being in Senior Barda's super duper death lab. Right at the start of this endeavor it wouldn't be fatal, since she had some Life Saving Treasures in an emergency to get immediate attention, but it certainly set the tone. Dropping them, Shu wiped her forehead, finding a bit of sweat caused by excitement on it. It only caused her grin to widen. Phew! The Secret Realm sure started off strong! Elder Lang was right, those places really were built different! Now she could understand how Katha had such a hard time here. Her smile wavered a bit, before she winced, scratching the back of her head awkwardly at the thought. Well, then again, her issue wasn't the Secret Realm, it was that Archer guy chasing her down, wasn't it?. Who was he again, her boy toy? Secret crazy admirer? Or was it something something revenge? Questions to ask later. Or to Kath later. Shu frowned. Could she use to Kath as a verb like that? It sounded more demeaning than a neutral word like ask-

Tangent, not the time. She looked around, widening her senses. It was difficult, since the energy in this realm was so chaotic. All of the elements clashed from their respective territory, not to mention the esoteric stuff like anti-gravity. But as far as she was concerned there was no would be assassin slash maybe bachelor in wait for her. Not in the light nor in the shadows, waiting to penetrate her like Katha got penetrated. Which meant she actually had some breathing room to make one of the most important decisions she had to make lately!

"North, East, West, South, where should I go to fill my mouth…"

From what she could tell, South was the desert, west to it was the jungle. She couldn't look at North for she had her back to it while she slid down, but from her peripheral vision it seemed to be more ice and frost. She tapped her chin in thought and glanced to the East. Her breath stopped, as if lightning shot down her spine. It wasn't anything that she saw in the area, physically at least. It looked like a perfectly normal mountain, with waterfalls descending from holes all over, creating a greenless rock landscape as the force of all that water seemed to grind the area clean. Overall dangerous looking but not too dangerous, unless something was in the water. No, what caught her attention was a simple thing.

Her blood screamed. Roared within her, filling her heart ablaze. As if it was a starving dog, presented with the most exquisite of meats. Her eyes stung, causing her to flinch. For a moment she could see a trail, or wisps playfully inviting her. Under normal circumstances, that screamed death trap all over. But... what did the Elder say? Trust her instincts? Well, if her very blood was singing for her, it just had to be instinct, right? Either that or she had a terrible disease she didn't know of. Not to mention…well, mountains and waterfalls were a classic. Surely there was a secret entrance or something. With her mind made up, she giggled before rushing forward, through the deadly, yet fun wonderland that was the Qiguai Secret Realm.

The distance could not be called long, especially for someone with Body Purification. And yet, it felt like days, even weeks, with the amount of stuff she stumbled over along the way, her mind accelerating in speed to memorize and categorize every single thing Shu has never seen before.

White red plants looking like a lotus, instead it was also crackling with lightning. Attracting metallic bees the size of her fist, who proceeded to absorb the energy and fly back to their silver shining hives. Said hives being approached by a bear with some sort of rock like armor. The beast roared, standing on its back legs smashing its crystal like claws together as it faced a scarlet praying mantis, its scythes glowing with heat. Like spectators, the bees hid, with the queen, smallest of them all, yet more ghostlike than any of the bees, like a spirit made of lightning. The two predators clashed. The bear's rock withstood the heat, yet cuts were created. Superior defense, but inferior speed and offense, as the praying mantis darted around, using the stone pillars around them as springboards. Alas, raw physical stats did not matter, as the bear punched one hive. Sweet honey, charged with Qi, sparkled and entered the monster's tummy. The mantis leapt forward, swinging its arm down with all its might…and lost it, as it broke off the new armor around the bear, made of superior steel now. Without further ado, the bear began to pummel down the mantis, who desperately cut away at it. Soon, the mantis was beaten to a bloody pulp, leaving behind a roaring, injured, yet victorious bear. But suddenly, it froze. The last thing Shu saw in those few seconds of events was the ominous approach of a swarm, surrounding its victim entirely.

Just one of the many examples she saw. It should not make any sense that this was a regular occurence. And yet, from the analysis provided by Shu's mind, the fight could have gone either way. If the mantis got the honey first. If they cooperated. If there was no second predator. Perfectly balanced. Absolutely fair. Only chance deciding the fate of the beasts. All of these things combined into an artwork of an ecosystem. If that artwork was drawn by a drunk person, high off the latest weed, while also doing it with their feet. It shouldn't work. Yet…it just worked. Suffice to say, Shu felt like a child all over again, learning all of the things that she had never known before. Only weird thing that registered amidst her joyful storm of thinking was that she never met another breathing human being. Heck, she never even met another non-breathing human being. It was a bit unnerving, yet fascinating. As if Shu was completely removed from civilization itself. Just her and the unnatural nature around her. Laughing out loud, she barred her teeth as she shot a claw upwards, taking a hound's head off before she even registered to it. It certainly tickled the wild side of hers, that was for sure, haha!

Eventually, she reached her destination, only covered in some blood. Blood that was cleaned off immediately. Standing in front of the massive edifice that extended even above the clouds, Shu gulped a bit. Guess this was what people meant with having eyes but not seeing Mount Tai. That was one giant mountain! Up close she could barely see a thing. At first, she mistook the white that covered the area as some form of mist. But the pricks against her skin, despite reinforcing herself with Qi, actually hurt quite a bit. It made her realize that those were water droplets, released by the waterfall hitting the ground constantly, repeatedly. No wonder the rock around her seemed so shredded! Though that begged the question of what now. After all-

-something large seemed to flow down, creating what was more an explosion than what usually happens when a rock hits water, the blood created disappearing into the whirlpools below in an instance, the scream cut short before it even started-

-well, that. Poor beast. To be utterly exploded into nothingness. She winced as she felt pain flare up on her right cheek after that particular event. Damn, she got cut. Must have been some bone or rock or something. Might even be bleeding a bit. It was then that the constant sensation of pain stopped. Or rather, everything stopped. The sudden shift of activity left Shu dumbfounded as she blinked. She wiped her eyes and shook her body off the water. Yet she wasn't seeing things.

The moment she bled a mere droplet…the waterfalls ceased. All of them. At once. Even the water left behind became like a mirror, utterly still. Carefully, she reached out with her foot and touched the surface with her sole. It didn't give in at all. She took a deep breath and jumped on the created lake. No sinking feeling. It was like she never left the rock she stood on. Shu couldn't help herself. It started off with a snort, before breaking out into a loud laugh. What the hell was up with that? Was she really this lucky? Or was this fate? Wiping a tear, she slapped her cheeks before moving forward. Whatever the reason, now she had a proper goal, instead of aimlessly running around in the Secret Realm! For her eyes spotted what looked like the slit of a door! Stopping right in front of it she crossed her arms. Yup, definitely a door. Before she could even tilt her head to consider how to open it, it suddenly glowed. Then the light shot out and hit her head before she could even react. She hissed, falling down on a knee as knowledge invaded her mind. That momentary pain however was quickly forgotten. Forgotten by utter and complete glee as she licked her lips, a giggle escaping her.

"Ooooh, this place knows what the ladies like!"

Gravity Reversing Stomp. To call it powerful, to call it arcane, would be an understatement. From the information she learned, it was difficult to say the least. Horrible for her Qi reserves too, all things considered. But…Reversing Gravity! She could practically fly now! Well, in theory at least. Rubbing her hands together, she cracked her neck. It certainly said something how hard this trial would be, for what could it be but a trial, if this was the first gift. With that in mind, she pushed forward, palms pressing against the door.

And then, Qinglong Shu disappeared once more, this time into a mountain. A mountain, that if looked at from above, seemed to look a lot like some sort of dragon, the waterfalls appearing like tears running down its eyes before they vanished completely.

///

Once upon a time, a big group of fish lived together in a lake. So many fish, you couldn't even count them. They all lived in harmony, being friends with each other. No fighting, no bullying. Just having fun as they played tag and danced every day. There was also a big, big waterfall, going so far up a mountain, you couldn't see the top of it.

One day, one of the fish spoke up. Saying 'hey, how about we try to swim up there?'. After all, who knew what was up there? They would only know if they tried. So, caught up in its enthusasim, the brothers and sisters, the friends and buddies all nodded in agreement. At once, they tried to swim up. But oh no! The waterfall was too steep! The water falling too heavy, making them all fall down! Oh, don't worry, they didn't get hurt. But it was a bit sad. They wanted to go up there now, wanting to see the world, wanting to see what they haven't seen yet.

So they trained. Trained their strong little fish muscles. Refined their swimming technique. They raced against each other, their rivalry pushing them on to new heights! And it worked! They were growing in size, bigger than the biggest fish you have ever seen! Some of them even began to change colors! Yes, bright, beautiful colors, like that rainbow you once saw, remember? Those few, the half of the entire group that were able to grow strong enough, tried again. The others stayed behind, wishing them
good luck, because they couldn't grow more…Hm? Something wrong, Shu?...It's nothing? Alright then. Anyway, as I was saying, they cheered the stronger half on, and then they started off! Flapping their fins, swishing their tails, they did what they thought impossible and swam up the waterfall! But that was just the first step of their journey…

Shu's mouth was a thin line as she craned her neck, looking upwards. Her body was standing straight, her arms close to her, as if she was standing at attention to a lecture of an Elder. She smacked her lips before pressing them together once more. Nodding a few times, she took a deep breath.

"...Yeah, okay, I got nothing."

What else could she say to furious water currents that made up a giant pool…that were floating above her head, making a mockery of gravity just like a concerningly large amount of other things in this Secret Realm? It was like a very active ceiling, daring her to come at it as it wobbled and twisted and what not. As if that wasn't enough, things were actually alive in that vortex of flow and ebb.

Unfortunately for Shu, those things were the first sapient beings she got to encounter in this place. Why was that unfortunate? Well…

"She got nothing, you hear that?"

"Head empty, heart empty, haha."

"Poor mortal, confused by parlor tricks."

"Does not instill confidence."

Her eyebrow twitched. And they looked so beautiful too. Scales shimmering with bright colors. Graceful movements as their fins maneuvered their bodies. So many variations in color, giving them all a distinctive look. Every single individual would be a highly prized sight to be seen in the most noble of courts. And yet…each was just like the one next to them in spirit, utterly rotten. So many comments, also each just like the one next to them. A massive school of Rainbow Carps, something most Cultivators would kill to find. And yet Shu wanted to be anywhere but here. After all, they were throwing barbs at her as if she was a free for all feast. If the Qiguai Secret Realm wanted to show off its hospitality and great customer service, this sure was a shite way of doing so. Rolling her shoulders she narrowed her eyes. Well, even without anyone spelling it out, the deal of this trial seemed cut and dry. There was a literal barrier in the form of water above her and she just received a cool new skill. ergo…

"Lemme guess, once I get through that pool, I get to the next task," she stated loudly, hands on her hips with a wry smirk. The fish looked at each other before they collectively laughed in sync. Shu's eyebrow twitched even more. Heavens, they all had the same damn voice too!

"Oho, some brains after all."

"Head not so empty huh."

"Still a poor mortal though."

"Instills some confidence."

"Ten bucks she's gonna take ten years."

"Fifteen on eight but crippled."

"Twenty she gives up."

"Hey, you still owe me twenty!"

If the main purpose of this trial was to inflict a major headache on Shu with the world's biggest peanut gallery, it was succeeding. She closed her eyes and exhaled. Alright, tuning them out for now. She didn't have forever in this Secret Realm, not while the DI was probably fighting for their lives out there. The least she could do was to be as quick as possible. Therefore, brute force method first, then see where it went from there. With that in mind, she squatted down, hands on her knees as she had a blank look, staring off into empty space as she focused inwards. Sound ceased around her, the confusion, the amusement, the mockery from the carps. Instead, she activated the engine that was her very core. The Cycle she first learned to refine with Matthaias started up. Her Qi jumped from one station of the cycle to the next, until a furious flow was created, her Qi rapidly circling around. At the same time, she grasped the mental trigger of the Gravity Reversing Stomp. Earth Qi flowed into a separate well, outside the cycle, for what had greater gravity than the very ground that made up the world? On its own, it was a simple technique. With a single stomp, she would make an invisible force drag her into the opposite direction of that kick, as if an entirely new world would appear above her, with its own gravity. Combined with her Cycle, she grinned like a feral animal. With a scream, she flipped the switch on both techniques.

Fire, fueled by the consumption of the elements themselves, exploded from underneath her. At the same time, Gravity reversed and pulled her up like a helping hand. With speeds never before experienced, combined with the raw muscular force of Body Purification, Shu would be surprised if even experienced Cultivators could see her as anything but a blur. She shot up and broke through the first layer of the pool of water. Bubbles escaped her mouth and disappeared to the current within that came from her right side. Yet her body kept its momentum, moving upwards. As she flew up, Shu took great satisfaction at some of the fishies gaping at her openly, shocked that such a hard headed move actually seemed to work. However, her grin as she screamed was strained. The second she entered the pool, she felt the raw force in this area's current. It was water, but she felt like moving through tar, not helped that she was starting to be pushed to the left. She tried to kick one more time, to trigger the Gravity Reversing Stomp, but doing so was a massive mistake. Gone was her spear like form that served to pierce through the shield that was the pool. With her form broken, the current easily broke the rest of her upwards momentum. She gargled as she was swept to the side, before the world around her tumbled. Like a mere stick stuck in a river, she could do nothing as the pool carried her from one current to the next, up, down, in a circle, looping. By the time she broke through the bottom of the pool and smacked her head on the ground, her eyes were already spinning like crazy.

"Fuuuu…ugh…"

Spitting out the water that entered her lungs, she breathed heavily, the dizziness slowly disappearing. Okay. That was not pleasant. At all. She felt like puking. At least this was worth calling a trial, but damn, that water was not joking. Not only that…

"Hahahaha! Look at that face!"

"Faceplant number one!"

…Yeah, their shock didn't last long and they went straight back to mockery. Spitting to the side, she wobbled up to her feet. With deep breaths, she put her hands on her hips. Alright, fine. That didn't work. No use whining about it, time better spent analyzing why it didn't work. First off, bad starting point. Her eyes darted all over the place. She couldn't readjust her course like that, if her form tumbled like that the minute she moved a muscle in there. Well, at least now she was more mentally prepared for that to happen. So she should be able to react better now. Not only that, she learned another lesson. She smirked as she saw a particular current in the water that served her needs. Yes, that one went up just as she wanted. Using that as a start, she could go from there. She didn't expect to nail the trial with this second attempt, but it should work a lot better. Once more, she started up the process. Her soul roared to life, her muscles tensed and she leapt up with Fire and Gravity. Her eyes widened as her speed got accelerated one more time as she was dragged up by the current itself. It was as if the very blood in her skull were descending down to her feet. Gargling in excitement, she reared back her foot, intending to give it one more boost as she saw a different current coming right up in front of her. Hey, at this rate she was gonna ma-

"Whoops."

FISH!

Obviously Shu couldn't brake in this pool, so her face smashed against the scales of the Carp that just happened to be passing by. Not even budging it. Thus, the force had to go somewhere, which meant Shu came to a full stop. For a moment, she remained in place, staring into the eyes of the Rainbow Carp. Its mouth twitched and Shu gargled before time resumed once more. The currents dragged her away and played with her like a dog shaking around a doll. Oh, that motherfucker swam in her way on purpose! Her back smacked against the ground. She groaned, twisting her body a few times as it ached all over the place. Then she ran her hand through her wet hair and stared at the pool with an incredulous expression, her mouth half open in indignation. Naturally the Carps were having a blast with her reaction, bubbles escaping from their mouths as they laughed in sync.

"What, did you think we'd just stay where we are while you are doing this?

"Rude. We gotta get moving too."

"You want something worth your time, we gotta make it worth the challenge!"

"Sometimes these fins need to touch something pathetic."

"Eyyyyy!"

Ah, there was the foam. She was wondering when it would come out of her mouth. Her eyebrows twitched violently, her eyes shining azure and dragonic. She was going to filet them. She was going to filet them and eat them alive. Raw. Without any seasoning to taste their defeat even more.

"Ohohoho, spicy!"

"She certainly has the eyes, but that won't be enough!"

Spitting out the fluids, she rolled her shoulders and crossed her arms. Alright, this was definitely going to take a while. She sent a mental apology to the 501st and focused back on the task. Let's see. Bruteforce clearly didn't work, at least not just that, so she had to analyze this entire situation. The currents were too strong and were too close to one another to try anything with her Elemental Shifting. As much as it stung her pride, she wouldn't have time to heat up the water around her to make it into steam or become 'water' enough to phase through. Metal and Earth wouldn't help either, as she would literally just be a sinking rock or a piece of armor in this metaphor. So it all rested on one technique. The Gravity Reversing Stomp. She raised her leg and stretched it out a few times. Which meant she had to figure out how to use the Stomp properly despite being flung around in water. Which in turn meant she had to figure out how to keep her balance in that chaos. Or unable to do that, time herself as she spun out of control and kick out. Nodding to herself, a plan formed. A simple plan really.

The fish stared blankly at the girl as she shot up again, repeating the last two attempts, only to fail miserably as expected. However, without even taking a break, she shot up once more, soon creating the image of a rubber ball being thrown into a hurricane, getting shot out, only to bounce back again. Most Rainbow Carp, the younger ones, shook their heads and swam around, ignoring her entirely. The older ones however narrowed their eyes, realizing something.

"Gah, almost!"

Bit by bit…

"One down, more to go!"

Little by little…

"FITNESS MEEEEEEE!"

The foolish girl was getting deeper and deeper into the pool. The progress could be called miniscule at best, but she was doing it. She never managed to stabilize herself as the currents changed, but that didn't matter. Instead, she used the force flinging her around to spin herself into the right spot and then use her internal energy to force her leg to shoot out, reversing gravity on the spot to readjust. She only managed to do it once or twice per attempt, but she was growing. Some Carp smiled.

At this rate she might actually be able to accomplish this in a century or two. Impressive, for someone not even having built a singular pillar. Thus, they kept on watching. Sometimes even swimming into her way, 'patrolling' so to say. Her frustration pleased them, but her stubbornness even more. How long has it been since someone attempted this Trial? Soon enough, the younger Carp joined back in, realizing that Shu was actually making progress. At some point, she kept landing on her feet just to jump back up, her eyes completely steady and no longer spinning as she soared in the water, legs kicking out several times with a perfect form.

Alas, if having a perfect form and the ability to use the Stomp in those currents were enough, this wouldn't be a Trial rated for Foundation Establishment. Shu landed back on the ground again. However, instead of jumping up again, like she did hundreds of times before, she suddenly let herself fall on her back. The Carp blinked at the sight. The sudden break in routine was quite jarring. They expected her to take a breather, to just get back up immediately after. Yet seconds passed. Minutes. Eventually, they all realized she was not going to move from there for quite some time. They managed to get their wits back, returning to throwing out barbs at her, to motivate and aggravate her.

"Hey, hey, no feigning sleep!"

"Looks like she can get tired after all, haha!"

"Guess the head isn't so hard, ey?"

And yet, Shu remained silent. Before, she would respond at least. Flipping the finger, taunting back, something. Instead, her chest moved ever so slightly as her breathing began to calm down, her eyes staring unflinchingly at the pool without moving a single muscle. Some Carp sighed out in disappointment. How boring. They spread out again, trying to entertain themselves. One Carp however, with the most varied colors, narrowed its eyes though.

"...Something is wrong."

"""Hm?"""

It didn't elaborate to its brethren. Its eyes remained on Shu, who kept lying on the ground, unaware what was going on behind those eyes, filled with life.

How long was she in here? Weeks? Months? Maybe even a year and more. In this cave, in this isolated place, she had no sense of time. No passing of the sun or moon. No movements of the star or any shadow that indicated the flow of history. Was Big Sis alright back home? How was the mission going for Katha and the others? Idle thoughts entered her mind as she relaxed. Time truly was a mysterious thing for cultivators. Most mortals would be concerned about how much time they spent somewhere. But Shu and other Cultivators? Well, time usually wasn't much of an issue, as long as they kept on growing. Worst case, Life Extending Treasures were a thing. Priceless, a pain in the ass to find, but they existed. A year or two wouldn't be an issue. Quite frankly, she could take her time here. Concentrate on growing her internal reserves. However…

"Haha…"

What use was taking her time here…how could she possibly do such a thing…if at last…

"Ahahahahahahahahaha!"

Complete joy. Pure excitement. Her laughter echoed in the cave she was within, causing the Carp to stare at her, weirded out by the sudden noise. Some thought she lost her mind. Others thought she just thought of something funny. And well, they would both not be wrong. For what was more insane, more funny than the fact that she figured it out at last? What use was there to stall if one could reach the goal at last?

"So that's how it works! Gotcha, gotcha!"

After such a long time, a time she couldn't define, she finally managed to piece all those millions of puzzle pieces together. All those tiny parts, each unique experience, as she got caught by the currents and attacked by the Cap. Every sensation of pain, analyzed to completion, to create the image of victory she had in her head.

It was all about timing. Too soon or too late, both would cause her to miss the right current and her form would be unstable. The right form, at the right time, to create the best circumstances to use the Gravity Reversing Stomp. Not only that, there were so many Rainbow Carp up there, swimming around. They added to the obstacles of this trial. It was like finding a needle in a haystack.

This was impossible without perfect control. Without power equal to the fish barring her way. Someone at Qi Condensation could not even dream of completing this trial. The smarter move would have been to cultivate, to concentrate on ascending to the next level. Getting ready and then facing a Tribulation would have been the way to complete this trial. However… Shu's face split into an even wider grin, making her look utterly deranged. That was exactly why this was worth her time! If she needed to be at Foundation Establishment to only clear this first Trial, then she didn't deserve to be there to begin with! If it were meant to be easy, it wouldn't be worth struggling for! She got up to her feet and cracked her neck. Looking up with her body slouched over, her arms swinging loosely, she wheezed, the amount of laughter from before having taken her breath away. She relished the anticipation in the bodies of the Carp. In declaration, she slowly pointed her finger at a certain spot in front of her. The fish blinked and turned their heads.

In an instance, Shu jumped up to an entirely different spot, moving backwards.

"Sneaky little-"

"But that won't be enough!"

Yes. It wouldn't be. A trick like that would barely buy a second if Shu was generous. But a mere moment was all it took. The little instances that built up her path, the painting she created in her head. Her body pierced through the pool's bottom and she immediately let herself be carried to the left. She curled herself up into a ball, her knees close to her chest as she tumbled around. Some fish snorted, thinking this was just going to be like any other attempt. But then, just as her head was about to enter a current that would send her down once more, she shot out both of her legs. A sudden ninety degree turn, her hair barely not touching said current. Instead, gravity grabbed her and she was carried up, before entering a new current that moved her to the right once more, but with a slight deviation upwards.

Her eyes were closed shut. She couldn't see a thing, but that didn't matter. Sight in this water, this chaos, was counterproductive. Too many distracting things. It would make her too sick either. All she had and must use was the mental map in her head.

Up to go left. Down to loop around and go up once more. Right, to turn left, to go down, and from there ascend once more. Two kicks in rapid succession, followed by a kick delayed after another. Uncurling herself and spinning herself like a screw to move between two Carp. Their eyes widened, seeing that she dodged them with what appeared to be ease.

They might not have noticed it, but they had patterns. Preferences to how they swam. It created paths that intersected and separated in her Mind's eye. But more importantly…they weren't serious. They had a rule for themselves. Casual swimming only. If they truly wanted her to fail no matter what they could speed through the currents and stop her in her tracks. Maybe even attack her. But they never did so. Thus, Shu found the chink in the armor that was this Trial. Slipping past the fish that swam towards her, she kicked off again, avoiding them and entering a new current once more. She felt her Qi reserves emptying out, but Shu pushed out, releasing bubbles out of her mouth as she screamed. If one were to trace her path since the initial jump, it would be all over the place, like a kid playing with crayons. However, despite the loops, despite the zig zags…Shu was getting higher and higher. Until, at last…

Her head broke through the water. For a moment, she thought she failed once more. But then she realized that gravity wasn't leading her downwards. No, the sensation of vertigo she felt was the one that came with flying upwards. Her eyes widened as she saw the pool of water below her. She snapped her head up, seeing solid ground, a cliff that was above the currents. With one final kick, she leapt forward, arms reaching out like claws. She touched the rock and clawed herself forward, trying to get away from the water as far as possible. Sliding over the ground, she breathed heavily, slowly turning around on her back. She was running on fumes now. She took in air like it was food for a starving animal. She was wet everywhere and to say she was tired would be an understatement. Yet as the realization settled in, the realization of victory…She felt new energy bubble in her chest and explode outwards as she punched up at the air,

"Who's the fucking best in the whole world?! This gal! Eat it, you stupid goddamn fish! I'm your god now and you are my pathetic sacrifices, aaaaaaaahhhh!"

"That's just hurtful."

She blinked, out of breath, before turning her head towards the pool. There, the school of Rainbow Carp stood at attention, standing on their tails, their…arm fins crossed as they frowned at her. Shu chuckled weakly before coughing, water escaping her lungs. She covered her eyes with her palm, trying to regain her energy.

"Sorry. Just…high off the victory."

Looking through the gaps between her fingers, she saw the fish stare at her for a while. Then they collectively shrugged, any tension disappearing.

"Eh, guess you earned it. Good game."

""""Good game!"""""

Shu sniffed before shaking her head. Damn it, all that salt water in there irritated her eyes. Exhaling slowly, she rose to her feet. Rubbing her hands together, she grinned at them.

"Sooo, what do I get? And don't say the trial itself was my reward."

"Nah, don't worry." Tilting its head backward, one carp readied itself with a glint in its eyes. "Here's your reward. Ptui!"

"Wait, what are you-"

She followed the red fluid being spat out with her eyes. It landed into a vial that was on a pedestal. A heavy weight appeared in her stomach. Wait, they couldn't be…Just as she feared, more and more spits shot out, like rain, entering the glass.

"Ptui."

"Ptui!"

"Ptui?"

"Ptui~!"

"P-p-p-p-ptui!"

Shu didn't bother hiding her disgust as the vessel was now full. Seeing her reaction, the fish chuckled at her.

"You must be thirsty after all that." The fish collectively saluted, mimicking their 'leader'. "Anyway, next trial is right up there, good luck with the next trial, you're gonna need it!"

Then they all dove back into the pool, laughing as they left her behind. Shu stared at the Carp for a moment before slowly turning her head upwards. She couldn't see the ceiling at all, the hole extending up so far that only darkness was visible. Then just as slowly she turned her head to the vial on the pedestal they filled up with their blood. Her mouth thinned as she stepped towards it, seeing how it shone despite the low light in this area. Well then.

There was only one thing to do when offered with such a highly suspect substance given by a bunch of big fish that bullied her for months. She closed her eyes, centered herself…and then grabbed the vial without hesitation. She held it above her head, titling it towards her with a wide, yet fragile smile.

"Cheers!"

A reward was a reward, no matter how disgusting! Thus, she emptied it out down her throat with ease. Gulping, she smacked her lips a few times after putting the vial down. Licking her lips to get the rest into her mouth, she hummed thoughtfully.

Then she buckled over, dropping on all four knees, as she heaved, covering her mouth.

"Blegh! Less salt, you damn scaled bastards!"

So disgusting! The texture was so sticky! What was she expecting?! Sweetness?! Hell no, it was exactly what she expected blood to taste like! Iron, salt, bad aftertaste overall! She thought the higher a fish was on Cultivation, they would taste better! She knew she should've filleted them!

Her mental complaints stopped when her stomach churned. Then, the vibrations and pain spread out, through her blood, and reached her skin. She grit her teeth, refusing to scream as agony rippled over her body. And just like ripples, her skin shifted, restructured itself, tearing Shu apart to create something new. Shu remained on her knees, hugging herself as she exhaled strongly through her nose. Then, at last, without having made a single scream. The pain stopped. Flexing her fingers, she stood up and tore off her sleeves without hesitation. Her eyes widened as her suspicion came true.

"Huh. Look at that."

Scales. Scales upon scales, an armor on its own, covered her arms. And judging from the spread of the pain she felt from before, she must have those things all over her body. She didn't have a mirror here, the pool itself unsuited for it, so she only had her imagination. She pasted a Rainbow Carp over her skin. Shu grimaced. Ugh, she could just hope it didn't look as shit as she imagined it. She wasn't that vain, but Qinglong Shu liked to think she had a certain attractiveness. Scales would only ruin it. Oh heavens, did she have fish eyes now too? Before her mind could spiral out of control, she slapped her cheeks and shook her head furiously. Angst not now, Trials awaited. Taking a deep breath, she nodded to herself before ascending up the hole the Rainbow Carps pointed out for her, kicking off the ground as she reversed gravity.

///

The fish, now turned Rainbow Carp, swam and swam and swam. Oh, they swam for so long, the waterfall sooooo tall. Some got too tired and decided to stop, to go back. They didn't return empty handed however, as they would tell their lesser brethren about the sights they saw as they swam up. How far the forest extended. Other lakes. Beautiful mountain ranges. But unfortunately, they never got to see what they wanted to see. That was reserved for those that pushed on.

And pushed on they did. The chosen few, no matter how tiring it was, no matter how painful it was, they kept on rising. With each bit of the distance they covered, they grew ever strong, ever more beautiful. However, their fins wouldn't be enough. They had to stop, in a safe haven, a break spot so to say. As they sat in this new pool, so high up that the trees themselves looked like ants, they realized that the waterfall was too powerful now for regular swimming. Some gave up at that sight, leaving. But the others were spurred on by the first, the one who encouraged them all to do this. If they couldn't swim on water, they just had to swim on land!

Don't laugh, Shu, it can happen. Cultivation is a wondrous thing after all…When you are older…Oh, you are so cute when you pout!

Back to what I was saying…well, they tried really hard. Jumping up and up again, trying to stay in the air. Eventually however, with the magic of Qi, they did it! So with a handful of the Rainbow Carp left, those that remained evolved once more! Their faces became stronger, more fierce! Fur covered their scales and their teeth grew sharper! Yes, now they were Dragonfish!

…No, I didn't make up that name. And it's accurate! Either way, they then floated up, stomachs almost touching the waterfall but not quite yet, flying up towards the Heavens.

"I used to be a little gal, then I became a wondrous pal, do do do do…"

Her fingers grasped the edge of the wall. She grinned before pulling herself up. She spun and then landed on her feet, arms wide. Damn, this really was high. How tall was this mountain anyway? She dusted off her hands before wiping the sweat off her forehead. At a certain point she realized she couldn't cross the distance with the Gravity Reversing Stomp all the way, so she had to climb the old fashioned way. Fortunately the walls weren't smooth, plenty of spots to dig her fingers into. With a satisfied nod, she turned around…and then came to a stop, her eyes wide.

Many rocks defying the laws of gravity, just like the pool beneath. However, instead of just being water with currents, this was more akin to a giant three dimensional labyrinth, the boulders continuously moving, creating the impression of mighty walls. Well, a labyrinth, or a very imaginative playground. If one weren't careful, they would be stopped short by a rock solid (heh) obstacle. Unlike the pool, she had the impression she couldn't break through those no matter what. Or if she could, it was not worth the effort.

"Fancy, isn't it?" A male voice said out of nowhere.

Shu jumped only a little bit before moving her head around, frantically looking for whoever that was.

"Up here."

Looking up, her eyes widened in shock. Sitting on a leaning chair of all things, with a book in its fins, an actual, fucking dragonfish looked down at her. Its whiskers twitched with amusement, an elderly warmth in its eyes as it closed the book shut.

"My, you are quite talented. I heard the commotion down below, but to be here already? Yes, yes, it must be fate."

She couldn't help but blink. Huh. It, or rather he, was rather nice. Genuinely nice. No taunting or anything like that. Because of that, she bowed respectfully at him.

"This Junior greets her Senior."

Chuckling warmly, the dragonfish descended, treating the very air as if it was water.

"Good manners too! Indeed, this will be the most joyous trial!" Nodding a few times he swam around her, judging her. After a while, he made a satisfied nod and floated up to the rocks, which suddenly came to a stand still. Shu's eyes widened at the implication. Was he controlling them? All of them? And he didn't even seem to pay much attention while doing so. Amazing!

"It is rather simple." A smirk appeared on his face. "Catch me."

Shu waited. Silence stretched out. Then she tilted her head, arms crossed.

"What's the catch, no pun intended."

"There is no catch." The dragonfish nodded a few times, amusement shining in its eyes. "No catch but the fact that your target is me."

"Hooo boy." Shu hissed. Right, if the Rainbow Carp below were Foundation Establishment, a Dragonfish was above that too. So yet again, by any fair standard, Shu would never win in this. Therefore, she spread her legs, bent her knees and got ready to jump her latest opponent, a grin on her face. Approving of her energy, the Dragonfish shot up.

"Now, let us begin!"

Shu leapt, demanding gravity to fling her towards him. At the same time, the rocks moved once more, creating the impression of a slow moving storm, the same speed as before. At least for a moment, before they suddenly accelerated. Shu's eyes widened and she raised her arm. A rock the size of her fist smashed against it. She hissed in pain as she tumbled through the air. Damn, if that hit her head, it would've cracked wide open! And if it weren't for her new scales, even her block would have been broken! What were those stones made of?!

"Good reflexes! But that will not be enough! It would be a shame if you died after so much effort!"

Shu let out a grunt of recognition before desperately hugging onto a large rock. She looked down, wincing at the darkness below her. Okay, that was close. Taking a deep breath she looked around, looking at the flying rocks. They were fast, and hard enough to damage her. However, she soon recognized a pattern. With a shout, she kicked off the air, aiming for the dragonfish casually weaving between the rocks. She grinned as she jumped off the rocks themselves, saving up Qi. In an instance, her fingertips were mere moments away from his scales. Her opponent glanced at her…and smiled a pitying smile. Shu's eyes widened before a sharp pain flared up at her side. She glanced down looking at the rock embedding itself into her stomach, cracking her very ribs. She spat out blood as she was forced off course, her finger tips touching nothing but air.

"Who said the rocks maintained the same pattern?" The dragonfish shook his head. "No, no, foresight is good and all, but it is not the answer."

She crashed against a boulder larger than her. Holding her sides, she coughed up even more blood. Forcing air through her lungs, she powered through the pain. Her Bronze Blood might be thin as all hell, but it was still there. Her cracked bones within her flesh would heal up on their own. For now, she had a game of tag to win! Growling she leapt forward once more, demanding gravity to move her as she willed it. The dragonfish raised an eyebrow at her, but then let out an 'oh' sound when a flying rock touched her side once more. Instead of being smacked around, this time Shu stepped once more, reversing gravity and spinning around it. Then she grasped the rock and let herself be carried by it. Another boulder approached, faster than before, but she flipped over it, palm on it and used it to maneuver around. Over and over, she used the rocks to her advantage. Their momentum to carry her, as 'ground' to flip over. Sometimes they moved slower all of a sudden or took sharp turns. Shu got hit, bruising her body, but never did they land a solid hit like before.

Then, she spun around a boulder, legs first aiming at the dragonfish's back. But just as her soles were about to touch it, it dove down. Then another stone smashed itself against her ankle. She bit down a scream as it bent in a way it shouldn't have. Desperately with her working foot, she jumped back on solid ground and landed on her bottom. Hissing in pain, she held her broken foot into place, channeling her Qi to mend it. Meanwhile the dragonfish approached, shaking his head a few times.

"Hm, yes, a sharp mind. Adaptation. Improvisation. But alas, no matter how sharp a mind is, if it is used wrong, it is like a high grade kitchen knife used to fight a sword." A frown marred his dragonic expression."You do not grasp the fundamental importance here."

Well, that was cryptic. And also very irritating. Saying that made it sound like she was lacking in understanding. Flexing her foot a few times, she deemed it good enough, even if not remotely healed up enough. With that in mind she jumped up, onto a new boulder. This time, she stood up straight. Then she exhaled and pushed her Gravity Reversing Stomp to the test, forcing the power onto the boulder itself. The direction shifted, her Qi taking over. With a roar, she pushed, her personal projectile moving towards the dragonfish. He let out a surprised noise as it dodged, but Shu wasn't done yet. She burned through her Qi faster than ever before, but she kicked rock after rock at him. Starting to corner him with her 'arrows' she leapt at him, aiming for the one gap she left open. This had to work now!

"Yes, using your environment is a wise move." The dragonfish grinned. "Alas, I, your opponent, will not fall for such petty tricks!"

She didn't see any particular movement. Not even a swift swing of his tail. And yet, the very air around him seemed to freeze. Shu couldn't move. The rocks didn't move. All momentum was taken away, leaving them floating in the air. She tried to move her legs, to defy the mastery of her opponent but she couldn't. Damn it, plan B then! Fire Qi flew through her meridians and she was about to unleash it all, a bomb out of herself to break his concentration. But before she could do so, the world lurched. Her eyes went wide as she was forcefully moved.

"Ooooooh fuuuuu-!"

It was like she was in the currents in the lower pool all over again, only worse. With the rocks smacking against her several times, she tried her best to use her Gravity Reversing Stomp, but it was too much. Too many rocks, too many things at once, too many directions. She couldn't move her legs into position fast enough! Bone cracked, flesh was torn open. After what felt like an eternity, she was dropped down on the ground, creating a small pool of crimson fluids around her. She gasped for air as her body twitched, in shock from the damage and pain. How the hell was she supposed to do this? This wasn't like the water currents with their patterns. This entire place was at the dragonfish's mercy. She couldn't outpredict that, not yet. Her legs couldn't move as fast as her opponent's mere desire to shift gravity. Her mind went into overdrive, trying to figure out what the goal was. How to catch the dragonfish. What was needed to make it admit defeat? What?!

A wet noise in front of her. She blinked, staring at the piece of red meat in front of her. She turned her body, looking up at the dragonfish warmly looking at her with a nod.

"Here."

"W-what's this?" She asked, dumbfounded at this turn of events.

"Dinner. An empty stomach leads to an empty body and soul." It floated back up to its chair, pristine and unmarred by the chaos from before. Sitting down, it took its book into its fins and flipped a page open. "Let me know when you are ready to go again."

For a moment, Shu had the urge to jump at him here and there. He had to have his guard down now. But as quickly as the thought entered her mind, she dismissed it. No, it was no use. Even if he was right in front of her, breathing down her face, there was no way she could catch it with dishonorable means. It was meaningless. The one thing she learned from all this was that if he didn't want to be caught, he wouldn't. He could fly circles around her while she took the time to blink. No, it was better to play by the rules. With that in mind, she lit up the meat, cooking it. At the same time, she stared at it, pondering over what to do. By the time the food was done and cooked however, her mind was empty. Or rather, utterly exhausted.

She didn't have a single idea what to do. The Gravity Reversing Stomp was the key here, but she didn't know how. At her current mastery, it wouldn't be enough. The best thing she could come up with was getting better with it, but as the dragonfish said, she was lacking something fundamental. It wasn't a matter of increasing its potency with cultivation either. Chewing on the meat, she narrowed her eyes. Well, she had all the time in the world apparently.

"You never mentioned your name!"

The dragonfish blinked. They have been at this for quite a long time now. Ducking casually under a drop kick of hers, he chuckled at her unyielding will.

"I call myself Wa Shi!"

"Really?!" Shu asked, gathering Earth Qi to keep a steady stance on a rock. Then she put her palms onto it, injecting Wood Qi into it.

"It is what I have chosen!" Wa Shi announced, slightly amused. Then he tilted his head, dodging a tree branch at the same time that Shu created. "Are you sure you want to waste your breath like this?"

"I'm going to be here for a while, so might as well, right?!" She set the newly created tree on fire, the ash and heat covering the view. Then she shot through it, forming Metal Qi around her and turning herself into a flaming ball. Distorting the air, it would be more difficult to make out the details of her form. "Got some favorite food?!"

"I find boar quite pleasant!" The Dragonfish responded, easily dodging the burning fist. Then he blinked before chuckling in amusement. "Oh, I see now! How sneaky! To talk with me to predict me better!"

"Hey, I'm also interested as a person!" Extinguishing herself, Shu rolled her shoulders. Then Water Qi surrounded her skin and she slid around the rock as if she was covered in oil. Picking up speed with a few loops she slung herself towards the dragonfish once more, extending her reach with Wood Qi nourished by the Water and Earth from before. "No hard feelings, right?!"

Naturally she missed, and missed again. She tried to kick out, to pull Wa Shi towards her, but he simply ignored the force inflicted upon him and just laughed heartily.

"No, no, not at all! It is what you should be doing, haha!"

That was the pattern that described the next days, weeks, months. Talk. Chase. Take a break. Rinse and repeat. Over and over again, as Shu used every trick and technique and skill she picked up over her life to get closer to the dragonfish, to no avail. During that time, she asked about many things. His birth, his ascension. His knowledge of history, ancient, so very ancient that it boggled Shu's mind. His curiosity of the outside world, of the realm outside the Secret Realm. His amusement for comedy, intrigued by the new books that were out there. Not only that, his personality quirks. Snoring while sleeping. Liking his food with some spice. At a certain point, she could confidently say that Wa Shi (or whatever his real name is) was basically a friend. His little quirks and speech patterns. His opinions about Righteous and Demonic, or rather the lack thereof. According to him, it's been like two years since she started this chase. However…despite all that knowledge, all those things that helped her started to predict his movements…

Her hands swiped empty air once more. Immediately she channeled Metal and defended herself from a projectile. As she flew with its momentum, she grabbed onto a nearby flying rock and flung herself over with Gravity and Wood, like using a vine and the wind on her back. Then she committed to a sequence from a past battle. Fire heating up, then water, forming steamy mist. Her form became without form and she was right on top of him.

"Oh my, what a unique element!"

Yet her right foot touched nothing yet again. Her form was forcefully thrown back, for even the mist had to obey gravity. Not only that, he backed off enough that even without it, she would have to stop her mist technique before she lost her own momentum and needed to become 'solid' again. She growled in irritation as she landed back on the ground for the umpteempth time. Damn it, despite her ability to read him somewhat, he was still too damn fast! Which meant she was still not understanding the fundamental thing he was talking about.

Damn it, he was controlling gravity so casually, not even her mist form could touch him! The one thing that let her touch Aretaphila Myia of all people! What was she missing?! What could she do for him to let her touch him?! If only she could do what he could, as if it was second nature-

Nature.

Shu froze in her tracks, just as she was about to leap back into the chase once more. The dragonfish stopped, eyes wide, before a glint shone within them. Shu didn't take note of it at all. Instead, she looked down at her legs. Slowly shaking her head, she wanted to dismiss that sudden thought that entered her mind. It couldn't be so simple, right? But…maybe it was. She couldn't think of anything else.

It was called Gravity Reversing Stomp…but was it a fundamental law that said she had to actually stomp to use the technique? Gravity affected the entire body. Not just the legs. It was such a simple thought. No, rather, if one walked, the body did many other things as well. One didn't have to consciously think about the concept of walking. Like a baby learning how to crawl, they didn't even have the mental capabilities to 'think' about how to do it. So many things were done subconsciously for it was part of their life. Breathing, moving the limbs in sync, pressing the palms and soles on the ground before pushing off the ground. What comes before the stomp, before the moment of action…was the moment of intent. Intent to activate the technique. Which in turn meant a massive increase in speed. She looked up at Wa Shi, a blank look on her face.

Then she grinned like a maniac as her leg did nothing more than twitch. Immediately gravity reversed and she shot up. The dragonfish moved immediately to evade, curving away. An act that Shu immediately followed. Her arm twitched and gravity took a turn as well. Rocks were easily avoided, a small twitch here and there to readjust. No longer was she too busy stretching out her leg, to mentally process that action. Instead, she focused on her Qi surrounding her entire body, before grasping an area around her to call the gravity point, to pull her towards it. The time of reversing gravity was cut short by only a few moments, but it made all the difference, as well as the lack of a clear give away of her using the technique. A few seconds of chase and Wa Shi nodded…before stopping. Her hand touched his scales. The sensation was like a burning fire, rippling through her skin. In all her excitement, she stopped thinking about manipulating gravity. Fortunately, the dragonfish caught her with his own control and gently put her down on the ground.

Shu sweated furiously, the strain catching up to her as she breathed heavily. And yet, she grinned widely like an innocent child, as it finally clicked. Just as Wa Shi expected as he bowed to her with respect.

"At last, you have grasped the basics." He looked her directly into the eyes and moved his fin in demonstration. "The Stomp is merely the first step. First, you learn how to walk with the wind. However, a true dragon does not walk."

He began to glow. Qi, Shu realized, surrounding every bit of scale on his body.

"Dragons soar. You live with your entire body. Thus, every muscle of yours must demand reign over Gravity. A true dragon must only desire something for it to happen."

"Heh…hehehe…so simple…" Shu muttered. She spent so much time on this. Her face flushed with embarrassment. Yet Wa Shi shook his head, a warm smile on his face.

"It is most difficult to comprehend the easiest things, for they are so easy that there is no explanation for them at all. There is no shame in that," clapping his fins a few times he nodded at her. "Now then. You have comprehended the art of movement. Now it is time to make it truly yours."

Shu straightened her back up, exhaustion basically forgotten. Her eyes wide, filled with focus and attention. Approval shone in the dragonfish's eyes before it turned away from her.

"Instead of surviving the chaos that can be gravity, you will now learn how to cause said chaos. Through that, the ability to control gravity shall be imprinted in your very blood." He twisted his body. "Observe. The Lawless Winds."

His tail swung like a glaive. At the same time, all the rocks turned into dust. Shu's eyes widened, as she saw a vortex that shredded the boulders entirely. Such a powerful wind. No, not wind, Shu realized, internalizing that technique names could be misleading. Gravity itself. Utterly chaotic, pulling and pushing into all directions, changing the way gravity worked every split second. So fast that no physical body could withstand such forces. Turning back to her, Wa Shi took great satisfaction at her half open mouth. Raising his right fin, he gained her attention back.

"To understand these winds, one must understand one important lesson," he cleared his throat."Laws are meaningless."

"What?" Shu tilted her head, utterly confused by that word.

"As the name implies, it represents the Law of Nature that is gravity…and how it is a frail construct. Declared absolute by those that cannot rise above their station," Wa Shi elaborated. He closed his eyes, immersing himself into philosophy. "To be a dragon, one must learn that nature itself is not a chain that shall bind you. Nay, we are above the laws. We create our own Gravity, our own Winds. By defying what is known and allowed by the world, do we ascend. That is Cultivation. That is being a Dragon." He opened his eyes. "That is life."

"Sometimes Order must be disrupted…" Shu whispered. And wasn't that the basics of what her life, as a Golden Devil, as one declared to be Demonic, was all about? Seeing that his words reached her, Wa Shi smiled.

"Exactly. You have learned how to find Order even in Chaos with the Gravity Reversing Stomp. Now, you must create Chaos within Order. Now, gather your Qi. This will not be a quick lesson."

And he was right. For one single technique, she spent half the time she spent in this trial. After all, to intentionally create chaos was a paradox. It was almost anathema to her entire fighting style. She had a system to follow. The Wuxing, the Cycle of Elements. How the Gravity Reversing Stomp worked. They all defied the common sense of mortality, but it was a pattern to her. But the Lawless Winds? They are meant to be random, in their purest form. To tear something apart like a child would by shaking a bag violently. People naturally craved Order, Shu believed. Something to make sense. So she sweated, even bled, as she tried to summon wind over and over. Not a simple wind that one could cause with a strong punch, but a true, Lawless Wind. Wa Shi showed her the technique over and over again, and Shu carefully dissected every bit of Qi utilized. How was it used? Through which meridians did it flow? How did Shu have to adapt a technique of a Dragonfish to a human body? How did a natural storm occur and how could it be translated over to gravity itself? Piece by piece, she adapted, threw away, restarted her analysis. It was frustrating. It was aggravating.

And it was so much fucking fun! Every setback was a new lesson, every failure showing a new path to take. Eventually however, every game, every piece of fun had to end. Her stance was wide, facing a floating rock, courtesy of Wa Shi. She flexed her fingers, as if ready to draw a blade at a moment's notice. The image formed in her head. The world shattered, its core, its gravity, all over the place and fighting for dominance, to make a whole new world. Like ravenous beasts aiming for the top. Qi flowed. And then she opened her mouth as she snapped her wrist forward, palm facing the rock.

"重力!" ( Gravity)

The stream came out of her hand. The very air distorted from the forces inflicted upon it. It hit the rock, and Shu screamed in delight, raising her fist. Not merely pushed from the front. Not merely cut by wind. No, the very foundational force of gravity hit it from all sides, crumbling it like a ball of steel in Shu's hand. Exhaustion caught up to Shu and she dropped down on her knees. She heard clapping and she smiled brightly at Wa Shi, who hummed with happiness.

"You can shoot it out like a stream. Or create a territory around you, like a furious storm. Perhaps you simply cause a singular wind, to drag someone up or down. And through all that, you shall be immune as long as you utilize the Winds with the Stomp. It is up to your imagination."

In other words, gravity was her bitch now, no matter from which direction she came from! She pumped her fist. Fuck yeah! She put her fist against her palm and lowered her head, touching the ground.

"This Junior thanks her Senior for this lesson! I will never forget this!"

She felt something touch her head and ruffle her hair. Looking up, she saw Wa Shi remove his fin, his whiskers twitching.

"It was my pleasure. A genuine pleasure." He raised his hand, his smile falling. Shu tilted her head at that, the sudden shift of attitude. "Look up. That is where your last trial awaits you."

Shu gulped and looked up at the darkness above. No, not darkness. Her eyes widened when they adjusted to what she was seeing. Dark clouds. She could actually see the outside. It was far off, very far off…but she could see the light at the end of all this. She tightened her fists. She spent like four years in this place. Four years of suffering and learning. And now this was her final-

"I have to be honest with you. I do not believe you should do it."

She snapped her head at Wa Shi, her eyes wide with shock.

"What?" She whispered. He was so supportive before. Enabling her, patiently waiting for her to learn the lesson. What changed? Sorrow filled his eyes as he shook his head.

"Yes. Unlike I or my lesser brethren below…the next…examiner will not desire to see you succeed. You will experience pain beyond anything you have ever felt." He took a deep breath. "Are you not satisfied with your mastery? At this level, even most at Foundation Establishment shall have problems with you."

Ah. Such a grandfatherly warmth. Shu smiled softly. Then she began to walk past him. Her hands reached out for the wall and found a good hold. Pulling herself up, she giggled, scratching the back of her head awkwardly.

"Noted. But apologies, I don't do things halfway. I'm too stupid to quit."

Instead of reprimanding her, the dragonfish, her latest teacher merely nodded ruefully. As if expecting her answer. He merely smiled back and gave her an encouraging nod.

"Then I can only wish you good fortune."

With that, the final trial awaited.

///

Finally they reached the top. Many were left behind. No longer able to keep up their Qi to defy gravity. No longer having the desire to fly. Satisfied with their current evolutionary state. So they returned, bringing even new stories to their mortal brethren. So many left, that only two kept pushing on until the waterfall ended. The first, the leader, and his own twin. They both floated on top of the mountain, looking down at the world itself. Ah, such a great sight. So many cultures, like tiny tiny toys. So many colors. One cannot describe the wonders they could see. However, there was a hint of sadness in their eyes as they looked out. They have reached their goal. And thus, they became aimless. What now? Did they discover it all now? No, that could not be. The first looked up and gasped in awe. The stars shone in the night. Those mysteries of the heavens, even above the mountain, the waterfall they rose on. And in that moment, the first found a new goal. A new waterfall to climb up. And before you ask, it's a metaphor in this case.

Yet their bodies were too small. Already as big as me, they needed to get bigger. So bigger they became. No longer did they have gilles. Fins. No, their fins became mighty claws. Their bodies became more like snakes. Their colors changed, becoming pure Azure. Hehe, that's right, Shu! They became Azure Dragons! Heaven blessed them with luck and talent, rewarding them for their efforts! Immediately, the two rose, wanting to reach the stars together! No cloud, no lightning, no wind could stop them, pushed aside with ease! Further and further, they got faster and faster as they left behind the earth, the mountain, the world itself. To new heights. To new mysteries.

Yes, Azure Dragons are the strongest of all. Just don't let Big Brother hear that. He is always jealous of us Qinglong.

The winds almost knocked her right back down the hole she emerged from. Breathing heavily, she looked around. She couldn't see anything of the landscape that was the Qiguai Realm. She didn't even know if she was still on the same mountain she entered. If she had eyes from above, she could have seen that the peak of the mountain looked like an eye, the hole itself being the black pupil. Yet she was ignorant to that fact. No, all she was surrounded by were dark clouds, filled with static energy, crackling as if ready to strike her down in an instance. It really deserved the name 'final trial' at this point. She glanced down at her right palm, shivering immensely. She upped the heat of her Qi, only to see it still shaking. She smiled a frail smile and shook her head. Right, this wasn't a matter of cold. Nor was she shaking out of excitement. Her mind already connected the dots and her very subconscious was afraid. She looked up, a cold sweat running down her back as she saw the black clouds above her slowly part.

Rainbow Carp. Dragonfish. Naturally, by that pattern, that process…the next one, the final examiner would be…

The first that she saw were the mighty claws. Sharp bone structures that could tear the mightiest iron apart with ease. What followed were Azure Scales, covering every part of its body, starting from its muscular tail capable of displacing entire oceans, to the rest of its massive body. It breathed out, its maw revealing its razor sharp teeth. At last, its full head descended, peeking down.

The Azure Dragon stared down right at her, eyes half lidded as if it had just woken up from a long slumber. A figure of myths, the symbol of the Qinglong Clan, one of the Four Guardians. Shu choked back a sob, tears dropping down her cheek and carried off by the strong winds. How breathtaking. It was like a childhood dream come true. It turned its head towards her, its white fur fluttering in the storm. It spotted her, her large eyes upon her figure. For the most momentary of moments, Shu thought she saw surprise in its eyes. Surprise that she was even here. Not a stranger but someone else.

Then a rumble vibrated the very air. The next instance, Shu realized it was a growl. Its eyes shone as its bared its teeth, its claws flexing. She could see veins underneath the scales pulsating. In that moment, Shu took a step back, eyes wide as she remembered Wa Shi's words.

The Azure Dragon had no desire to let her succeed. It inhaled through the nose, the very action like a vacuum, almost sending Shu flying. She braced herself and was already moving her right arm, the mental image of the earth shattering and its shards flying appearing in her head.

The Lawless Winds shot out, not to attack, but for the sake of survival. Yet mere winds were nothing to the exhale, the breath of a dragon. Nay, not a breath. A mere sigh of frustration at best, once more through its nostrils. Yet it was akin to the mightiest storm Shu had ever experienced. Her technique barely slowed it down, if at all. Then, with unprecedented force, it slammed right into Shu's body. Her muscle fibers, her bones, her very meridians, they all felt like they were broken into pieces. A silent scream escaped her as her back crashed into the edge of the hole she climbed up from. It was a miracle it didn't flat out break. She barfed out blood before gravity took ahold of her. All the techniques to defy it couldn't be executed. She couldn't even move a muscle as she fell down and down and down. The last image she saw was the Azure Dragon rising back into the dark clouds, not even giving her a second glance.

She soared by Wa Shi, the dragonfish. He winced with sympathy as her body fell like a rock dropped from a mountain.

"Oh dear, I knew this was going to happen."

She crashed through the pool of water, surprising the Rainbow Carp, the currents utterly ignored by the acceleration she picked up from falling down. At last, her fall broke with her face smashing up on the ground she started her ascent from. The carp looked at her unmoving body as blood flooded out of her broken nose and mouth. For a while, she remained there, motionless. They shared a concerned look, afraid she was actually dead. But then they saw a finger twitch and let out a sigh of relief.

It would take days until she finally turned around, eyes wide open with a blank look. Seeing that she was alive, and somewhat healed up apparently. They decided to fall back on old habits and chuckle at her expense.

"Wait, you actually went for the peak?"

"Greedy, greedy!"

"Youngers these days don't know…" The carp trailed off, seeing the very air distort around Shu. "Moderation…?"

Her body vibrated. Her fingers dug into her palm so hard she drew blood. Then she shot up, the Gravity Reversing Stomp sending her flying up, all while she let out a feral scream of pure outrage.

///

"...oooo…!"

The Azure Dragon, the memory that guarded the final trial, opened an eye as it rested in the thunder clouds. Its ears twitched before it looked around in confusion. What was that noise? Was it imagining it? It frowned deeply before shaking its head. It must have been nothing. Just having woken up before, relatively speaking, must have been messing with its sen-

"...ooiii…!"

It narrowed its eyes and looked downwards. No, this time it definitely heard something. It poked its head through the clouds and looked at the top of the mountain. The scream became louder and louder, echoing off the walls of the hole. The Azure Dragon growled when it spotted the individual causing all that noise. One hand grasped the ledge and flung the body up.

"-iiiiiiiiii!"

Dirty, battered and sweating immensely, Qinglong Shu landed on both of her feet. Taking a deep breath, she snapped her arm up, pointing directly at the Will with a snarl, saliva dripping from her mouth.

"You bastard, you almost killed me! What the hell is your problem?! We didn't even exchange a single word! I had to climb all the way back up here!"

The mythical being just stared at her, eyes narrowed. Any awe that the girl had in her eyes was overshadowed by unyielding rage. She even dared to bare her teeth at it. As if she was like a dragon. Such arrogance. Once more, without a word, the Will took a deep breath. This time however, it inhaled through its mouth. Shu's eyes widened, before she slowly shook her head, finger poking towards it as her anger intensified.

"Don't you-"

The fluid in its body shot out. Qi was added in an instant, setting it on fire. Thus, the inferno was unleashed, so searingly hot it began to melt the very top of the mountain. As fast as she possibly could, Water and Earth mixed together, creating a mud shield upon her scales, to protect herself from the burns. Naturally, her body began to steam immediately, the very dirt starting to burn her skin as well. Stumbling backwards a few times, it was inevitable that one foot would hit empty air. Once more, gravity reigned over her body and dragged her back down.

"DAAAAAAREEEE!"

Was it planned? Was it an accident? Either way, by dropping down, she escaped the inferno with only the least bit of damage. Third degree burns, bubbling skin, pristine skin and scales turned scarlet and ashen. The Azure Dragon stared at the ever smaller turmbling figure of the cultivator, until she was gone even from it sight. Shaking its head in irritation, it ascended back into the storm clouds, closing its eyes. Once more, it entered a dreamless slumber, wishing for the eternal void to finally take it. It growled a bit, anger bubbling up, thus removing the ability to actually sleep. Why was it chosen to be stuck in this forsaken playground called a Secret Realm? Why was it stuck here? Didn't it do enough in life to deserve better? To be more than a mere device to test trash? Yet here it was. A prisoner, despite all its power. Taking a deep breath to center itself, it started to relax, after what felt like weeks.

Of course because the heavens hated it, it was then that it heard the screaming again. This time it descended almost immediately, eye twitching. Indeed, there she was, barely healed up from her burns, yet unable to hear the affliction that was her empty brain. Hands on her knees she wiped sweat off her forehead, before looking up. The sight surprised it to say the least, its eyes going wide for a moment. The anger was still there. However…

"Okay, I see what game we're playing! Well, too bad for you, I'm the best at the Annoyance game! Once I win, you better give me something good!"

A giddy giggle escaped her, a smile ever so at peace. The mere sight of such a thing caused it to growl, squashing whatever weird feeling was about to bubble up. Instead, it pointed at her with a single claw, tilting its head back to look down on her better.

"Why should I give something to a traitor that joined the Invaders?"

Shu tilted her head at the voice, so deep it could drown someone with its mere presence. She blinked for a moment before raising an eyebrow, pointing at the dragon.

"You can talk?"

It twitched. It felt like it just lost to something pathetic. The very idea was irrational. Harrumphing, it kept its claw pointed at the fool, as the energy around it from the black clouds gathered. Thunder rumbled, lightning moved, and the idiot seemed to realize what was happening next as she gulped.

"Hoooo shit."

Instead of retreating or leaping down on her own however, the hopeless cultivator spread her legs, arms wide open, as if intending to catch the technique. It snorted, mentally deriding her efforts. Very well. With that in mind, Tribulation itself shot out of the tip of its claw and hit the human in the blink of an eye. Instead of smashing the girl off its damn mountain again however, she managed to stay standing, much to its shock.

Meanwhile, Shu couldn't even let out a scream as the electrical current wreaked havoc on her body. It was agony. It was torture. And yet, all she could see was not the dragon having shot it at her, but her Legatus. The leader of the Legion she joined, shooting such a kind of lightning at her as well. She forced the energy to move, to avoid her vitals. Something so dispassionate as a pointing finger could never match up to the depth of a Song, no matter the power difference! Thus, Shu almost broke her teeth from gritting them so much. And yet, her arm finally managed to move, pointing back at the Azure Dragon. The energy escaped her, instead hitting the Will straight in the face. It didn't even flinch, much to her dismay. However, she took great joy, forcing a grin despite her paralyzed, twitching body. Such a wide eyed look. Haha, worth it. She couldn't move anything at all.

But hey, she tanked it, so that had to mean some-

Something massive appeared out of nowhere and smashed her entire body. Her eyes rolled up, the sheer force pushing her everything to the back, including her brain. Faintly, she felt her back hit something, before gravity took a hold of her once more. It was only when she woke up agian, weeks later, back on the ground, would she realize that she was punched. A simple physical act, unimpressive compared to the fire, the wind, the lightning, and yet it inflicted more damage than anything else. Which meant that Azure Dragon was holding back and was still so strong. Some would feel despair. Others would cry at the injustice, at the unequalness of it all.

Shu on the other hand? Her mind was empty as she focused on healing up. Her body was swift as she moved up. And once she reached the top once more, seeing the Azure Dragon not having ascended at all, finally realizing how stubborn Shu was, she finally let out a laugh. Its anger, massive already from the affornt of being attacked by its own attack, grew. Yet Shu didn't care, looking past the rage, the wrath. Instead, she licked her lips, her stomach rumbling, not desiring anything petty like food, but knowledge. Explanations of how such power could come to be, how it used the elements so easily. She clapped her hands a few times, utterly giddy at this entire ordeal before pointing at the being dwarfing her.

"Okay. Lightning? Cool. Claw flick? Bitch move."

For a moment Shu thought it was going to bring forth its full power, seemingly growing its already massive size as its nostrils flared. But then, it took a deep breath and craned its neck. Rage under control, it gave her an apparently dispassionate look.

"If you want to survive, leave."

It almost sounded calm too. Unfortunately, too little too late. Shu chuckled, hands on her hips as she shook her head.

"Well, I entered this trial so I'm not going to half ass it, Mr. Rage Dragon. So if you want me to leave so early, just give up first, ey?" Shu paused before shrugging nonchalantly. "Either that or kill me."

"Then perish."

This time, the blow came from above. Shu immediately crossed her arms above her head just as the words left her own mouth. Yet it was almost too late, and even then, the sheer force caused her knees to buckle, the scales on her skin and the bones in her skeleton to crack. She roared in defiance, against the tail almost casually pushing down on her. But despite even her Body Purification, it meant nothing. Slowly but surely, she was pressed down on the ground, until she was being squeezed against the mountain and the dragon's tail. Her organs were being squashed together, blood seeping out of every hole as the pressure increasingly forced it all out. She clawed at the ground, trying to find some sort of relief, but it didn't matter, for the mountain itself was meant to be able to withstand the Azure Dragon, at least for a little bit. She had no idea how long she was being literally pressed, the pressure slowly increasing. Eventually however, the tail removed itself. Shu gasped for air as her organs tried to reform themselves to their proper, non flat form. Coughing violently, the last bits of blood escaped her. Her head was dizzy. Her vision blurry. She had no strength in her limbs, something that occured way too often. And yet…she coughed out a laugh as she tilted her head as much as she could.

"Ow…Now that's just…disrespectful…"

A dismissive snort.

"A mere remnant of remnants erased from history does not deserve respect." It narrowed its eyes. "Tell me, do you think your ancestors smile upon you? Smile upon what is left of you? A mere ember?"

Shu blinked. The words processed and she opened her mouth, outrage filling her. Naturally, the dragon swiped its claw at the air and the wind almost gently rolled her away….right back into the hole from which she came. She didn't even scream this time, way too used to falling down from high heights, more than she should be. During that fall, during the landing and during the healing process however, she was given time, for which she was grateful. Time to think.

Why did it mention her ancestors? Some might think it was a way to get to her…but it couldn't be so simple. There was anger, at being talked down like that. At being told she was not worth the legacy. But amidst all that rage that bubbled under the surface, a simple thought kept it chained down. A simple observation that pointed something out, or at least hinted at something. With that in mind, she ignored anything the Rainbow Carp said, gave her greetings to Wa Shi and got back up. Reaching the top once more, she frowned a bit at the Azure Dragon.

"Alright, you gotta explain the last one for me." Shu crossed her arms. "What do you know about my family?"

It remained motionless, but Shu knew she was onto something. If it truly didn't give a damn about her, why would it know that? Either it cared more than it pretended to be…or it was a personal reason. Either way, it meant that this Trial was actually possible, if some sort of connection was there. She only had to figure out what sort. The Azure Dragon, ignorant of her inner thoughts, shook its head with its eyes closed.

"Everything. The Four Beast Clan Alliance is a complete and utter failure of history. They were entrusted with a task and they failed." It gave her a pointed look."You failed."

It almost sounded like it was the Azure Dragon from the myths. The soul of one of the Four Treasures, that gifted the first Qinglong knowledge. But that idea was discarded immediately. No, the Four Guardians were mere observers. Giving the foundation to her ancestors, but then stoically looking at what they were doing, through victory and loss. This Will however? Its voice was too tinted with emotions. So its identity was something else entirely. Either way, Shu scoffed, this time letting part of her anger out.

"We didn't fail yet. I'm still here," she announced, not out of pride but out of simple fact. As long as there was one single living being from the Four Beast Clan Alliance, they would never fail. Her words caused the Azure Dragon to growl, eyes glowing and looking down at her like she said something especially foolish.

"Wrong. Look upon yourself. You who stubbornly climb back up over and over with nothing to show for it. You who have joined the accursed enemy just to live like a cockroach on the ground."

Accursed enemy? While his words at her person being stupid didn't really register, as he didn't relate it to her family, she tilted her head. She didn't know the Golden Devils used to be enemies with her ancestors. Or whatever they were called in the past. So that was an interesting trivia fact. Maybe the Four Treasures had records of that? One more reason to murder the fuck out of Ming. She nodded a few times before shrugging.

"Past is the past. Maybe our clans had beef with each other, but times change."

It flexed its claws, a detail Shu didn't miss. Its voice was ever so calm, but she saw how its tail moved a bit faster, back and forth.

"Foolishness from a complete fool. So easily forgotten."

"Doesn't change the point." She twirled her hand at herself. "Anyway, shouldn't you, I dunno, teach me something? A trial or lesson? This is the last part of all this right, and you are the examiner?"

"Do not presume how this works." It reared its upper body back, as if pushing together a piece of rubber. "I tire of you. Begone."

"Hey, I'm not done-"

Its entire body shot out like a spear. A claw grasped her, starting to squeeze her. Then she was taken up into the heavens themselves.

"YEEEEET!"

The clouds drenched her with their water. At the same time, she got electrocuted by the energy contained in those dark fluffy structures. Not to mention the sheer force from the acceleration. Shu felt like her entire body was turned into liquid, a silent scream escaping her. She couldn't hear a damn thing, only the sharp whistling of wind that threatened to tear her ear drums apart, only the static that sufficed her entire body.

However, they then broke through the clouds, and Shu completely forgot about all the pain or the fact that she was in the hand of an Azure Dragon. All she saw was light above darkness. There was only blessed silence up here, the noise from before so quiet it might as well not exist. The black clouds crackled with malice. And yet, up here, the sun was unhindered in shining down on her. The heaven above her was so blue unlike the heaven beneath her. From up here, she could even see where the black clouds stopped, revealing all the parts of the Secret Realm. As small bits only but…

Beautiful. Dazzling. Peace. Calm. As if all was well in the world. She yearned to stay up here forever as her eyes shone with awe. Unfortunately, every dream had to end. Her body lurched as she was dragged down back into reality, into the black clouds. The pain, the mindbreaking noise that crackled and squealed at her ears. Her skin, turning wet for a moment, becoming cold from the wind and then turning numb from the electricity. And yet, the image was seared into her mind, making her ignore all those unpleasant things. Her joy was unstoppable as she raised her arms, screaming in delight.

"WOOOOOHOOOOOOO, AHAHAHAHAHA!"

She heard the Azure Dragon's roar, not bothering to hide its irritation this time, but she did not care. Did not care as it accelerated ever so slightly and then threw her down the hole. Hell, Shu almost forgot to activate the Gravity Reversing Stomp so that she wouldn't turn into a crimson splatter on the ground! And even then, she was pretty sure her legs broke upon impact, despite her rolling with the remains of the forces inflicted upon her. Breathing heavily with her arms spread open, her legs fixed into place with makeshift bandages, she kept on giggling throughout the entire healing process. It was the longest period of lying still yet, but her mind repeated the scenery she saw over and over again.

What a sin, to deny such sights from everyone, to keep it to a chosen few. If more people could see what was up there, truly understand the majesty of being in the Heavens themselves…Shu was certain the world would be a better place.

///

"New record." The foolish girl dusted her hands off, with renewed vigor. No, even more vigor than before. The Azure Dragon grimaced, feeling the headache creeping up once more. "Okay, so where were we?"

She was truly broken in the head, that one. After that last move, of showing why the Azure Dragons reigned over the skies, literally anyone would have given up. Or be catatonic, if even alive. And yet, she was here once more. And yet, she defied common sense.

"What part of 'I tire of you' is so hard to understand?"

"I understand it perfectly," she responded without hesitation, nodding at him like a wise sage. The Will clicked its tongue, eyes narrowed.

"You do not."

"Oh, I do." She pointed at him with a smirk. "I understand that there's more to understand. Like what the Golden Devils did to set you off. Or why you want me to-"

With simple flick intent, a rock smashed into her cheek. Disoriented, she stumbled, but the Will didn't leave it to chance. More and more rocks smashed into her, turning her skin color blue from bruises before dropping her off the hole again. It closed its eyes, trying to center itself. However, this time, it didn't even get the luxury to do that. Too soon, too fast, Qinglong Shu returned to the top. Not even remotely healed up, as if the moment she disappeared from its view, she reversed Gravity and got back up. Rubbing her cheek she kept that smile on, strained as it was.

"Hahaha, touched a nerve didn't I?! Guess I'm getting hotter!"

Every being had a line. A limit. And at this moment, the Azure Dragon was done with talking. Its tail swung forward from the side. The fool jumped into the air, a free target to be hit with its breath. Like a hammer, it hit the girl, sending her back down.

But then, she returned.

Lightning, concentrated as a spear, pierced through her flesh, her shoulder. It twisted her body and returned her to the damned hole.

Again, she returned.

"Hey ho!"

It flew past her a thousand times per second, teeth revealed to the world, and cut her, over and over. Once she was covered in her own blood, she fell down by herself, too much lost to maintain consciousness.

Again, she returned.

"Beautiful weather we have, don't we?!

Wind turning into a hurricane, spinning her around in a vortex.

Again.

"Got a souvenir for you!"

Gravity itself tearing at her.

And again and again and again and againandagainandagainandagainandagainandagain-!

"Knock knock, great ancestor!"

And again. A single constant across the time she has been wasting. It didn't matter if it cut, smashed, beaten, used any element, kept breaking her body, her mind never broke. Arms spread open, shaking, yet a laugh escaping her throat as she made her announcement. Just like usual, without a single break, this girl just continued to smile, as if she was having fun! Despite all this pain! Despite the various ways it broke her body, smashed it up! What kind of complete maniac would still be grinning, almost looking forward to each climb?! Why?! Why?!

"WHY?!"

A scream. A sound so physical, so powerful, it blasted the girl off. But her feet barely descended a little bit before she reversed gravity and got right back on top of the mountain. She covered her ears with a hiss, but other than that, her smile stayed on her face. That sight only enraged it even more.

"Why do you persist?! Is it for pride, for love, for greed, for foolishness?! Is it for your old clan, your new clan?! What could possibly drive you?! I have long stopped speaking to you! All I have been doing was torture you, inflciting pain upon you and beat you over and over again! And yet, you persist! And yet, you don't leave!"

And yet…there was no hate within Qinglong Shu. Irritation yes, even anger, but no hate. As if…as if…! The Azure Dragon roared. No, it was wrong. This girl could not have done it. Because if she had done it…it would give it hope. The last thing he wanted. For hope was ever-fleeting. Thus, with a roar, it unleashed its mightiest flame. It was not mere fire, but the sun incarnated itself, that seared the very air. Part of the mountain flat out disappeared, as if a painter removed the black stroke from a white canvas. It snapped its head at Shu, whose arm steamed, burned just from exposure. Yet she stood there, defiantly smiling at him, despite the clean burned hole right next to her.

"Do you see?! Do you not comprehend what you challenge, invite, with each time you come up here and anger me, over and over?! What are you even doing?!"

"What I've been doing since I entered this trial," Shu calmly responded.

"And that is?!" He screamed, the Will shooting out spit out of its mouth. In turn, she smiled brightly at him as she pointed a finger at her chest.

"[Understanding]"

The Azure Dragon said nothing. Frozen in shock, anger almost entirely forgotten. One word. A single word to the ears of others. But to his ears? No, he could hear it. How much meaning that word carried. So much weight, weight that could only belong to…no, but not at such a young age. Yet the information it received from that singular word…it was immature. Young. But it was there.

Her Dao. In that moment, he realized how obsessed she was. How insane she was. How impossible it was to stop her.

"Even without words, you spoke. Even without giving me time, each blow held a history of yours you unleashed. Each agony you inflicted upon me, a painful memory of your own." As if in a trance, she shook her head, eyes half lidded in ecstasy. "It taught me many things. Haha…the world really is vast, isn't it?"

She was looking forward to his punishments, he numbly realized. With each new pain, her excitement grew. With each tortuous move, she learned. The fact that she was adapting at all, dealing with his attacks better and better and better… Flowing with his blows. Diminishing the heat of his flames. Conquering the winds and redirecting the lightning. She still got damaged, at the verge of being crippled. Every single time. But the other fact was that the Azure Dragon was ramping up the intensity without realizing it up until now. This girl actually grew from such a maiming. It was mindboggling that anyone could possibly wish for it.

"I don't get the details. But I have the overall picture. Which means I know."

"...Know what?" The Azure Dragon asked, finally finding his voice. Shu scoffed, shaking her head as she pointed at him, a teasing yet accusing smirk on her face.

"Don't play coy. I know you don't want to kill me. Never wanted to. Sure, I'm your convenient sandbag to live through vicariously. I'd say that's unhealthy, but maybe dragons are different?" She twirled her hand."Anyway, point is, you just want me to survive in the end. Even if it means maiming me so hard that I want to give up," her smile turned soft, knowing, as if seeing right through him."You hate what happened to the Qinglong Clan. To everyone. And you don't want it to repeat itself," she nodded once before bowing her head with respect, putting her fist against her palm. "You even blame yourself for it. Isn't that right, o ancestor of mine?"

"Arrogance," the Azure Dragon muttered. Yet it was no rejection of her words, something Shu picked up with ease. She rolled her eyes in exasperation before pointing at her hip, two Life Saving Treasures dangling off them. A bone, meant to move her body to the corpse it belonged to, deep in Golden Devil Territory. A fan, to force retreat upon even a Core Formation Elder if given the chance.
"It's simple fact. Like, c'mon, none of these babies ever triggered. And you just showed me. If death was what you wanted, I would have never heard your voice." She clapped her hands, folded them and pointed the tip of her fingers at the Will. "So drop the tough guy act, o great ancestor, and pass on your wisdom."

"If you understand my wish, then why do you think I would give it to you?" He asked, annoyance shining in its eyes, with none of the rage left over. It descended, touching down on the ground, coiling itself around the top and Qinglong Shu. Said girl let out a sigh, tired of all this.

"In case you didn't notice, I am more stubborn than you are. I'm getting to you and we both know it. You started talking when you could've just silently battered me, so I was already inside your head from the third go."

"Such audacity."

Once more, he didn't deny her words. His mouth even twitched, an unfamiliar form trying to appear, yet he pushed it down. No, not yet. This much wasn't enough to move him.

"Audacity makes me live. And no, survival is something different entirely." Shu crossed her arms with a deep frown. "Anyway, I repeat, if I wanted to merely survive, I wouldn't have stepped into this Secret Realm to begin with."

"Why do you desire power?" He asked quietly, yet loud enough to vibrate the air.

"I have to kill the one who brought us low. Make things right." Shu exhaled slowly, flexing her fingers. "It's my duty as the head of the Qinglong Clan."

"Duty? Is that it?"

"Well, that and…" She sheepishly scratched her right cheek. "I'm standing before a great ancestor. Forgotten to the sands of time. I would be a complete and utter idiot if I allow you to vanish before I squeeze you for every single bit you are worth. The Center requires no less than that."

A pure desire, tainted by revenge. It couldn't say it approved. Yet he couldn't say he disapproved. The two parts of the Azure Dragon, it and he, warred with each other. He won, as he acknowledged her words and nodded.

"Such thirst for knowledge is dangerous."

"It shouldn't be," Shu replied, as if speaking of the truth of the world. Once more, such audacity. But that was the Dao. It made one convinced of the truth. Closing his eyes, he took a deep breath. Memories resurfaced for the first time. Of a cultivator just as foolish as this girl, proud of his Body Cultivation and transforming into an Azure Dragon to beat back the invaders, alongside his sworn blood.

This girl was alone. Utterly alone. In these trying times, she needed all she could get. It felt like a mistake, but so was doing nothing now. Only two bad choices. It was only fair that she made it for herself. So, conflicted inside, yet serene outside, it concentrated.

"Very well. I am too old to care. Too old to worry. If you want to die, be my guest."

With intent, something separated itself from its skin. Shu's eyes widened at the Azure Qi radiating off it like fire.

"This is my Scale. It contains all that is me. All what it means to be an Azure Dragon." It turned away. "If you truly believe you are worthy, if you have faith that you are not an utter waste of time…take it if you can."

Shu stared at the True Scale, brimming with power, yet with more as well. Then she gulped, letting out a nervous laugh.

"It's gonna be incredibly painful, isn't it?"

"You cannot comprehend the amount of 'pain' it will be." The Azure Dragon glanced at her. "Someone of your level would not hope to survive. The only reason I am humoring you is because of your current blood. Despite being an infestation, it has its use now. It speeds up the process immensely."

"Chance of death is still incredibly high, right?"

"Why do you think I tried to scare you off?" He sighed. "We were great once. Leading figures of the region. Prosperity was within us." He let out a snort, for the first time allowing a teasing smile on his face. "You cannot even compare."

"What else is new, gramps."

And with that said, she spread her arms open, face utterly stoic. Yet her Qi sang with excitement, desire, a yearning for completion. The Dragon scoffed. For a moment, Shu could've sworn there was a smirk on its features before it spat the curse and blessing at her. The True Scale passed through her flesh with ease, entering her meridians. One moment, there was utter silence. Complete nothingness. Shu blinked, frowning a bit. She opened her mouth.

Then the screaming started as her body collapsed, foam escaping her mouth as her eyes rolled up and her body convulsed. Her ancestor grit his teeth, praying for her success. To overcome it, for daring to give him hope.

///

Hot. So hot. Her body, nay, her soul was set ablaze. Blue flames everywhere, searing her existence itself, wanting to consume her. In the smoke, in this darkness lighted up by this Azure Fire, so many things invaded her mind, pictures appearing in the agonizing heat of the burning flickers.

A child clutching his stomach, yearning for food. A mother cradling the corpse of a baby. A soldier cutting away at his enemies. A noble, spitting out disgusting food. A man betrayed by his love. A merchant losing all of her profits. She felt their emotions, the height of their being in each of those scenarios. She closed her eyes shut, to let her mind rest, but it was meaningless, for they were in her mind, her soul.

She felt the cuts of blades into her flesh. She felt the beatings of a drunken father. She felt the lack of air, as bullies pushed her head down a river. The last dying breath as she stumbled and hit her head. The tears burning her skin as she felt her missing right hand. Frustration as her brethren died, one by one, by those foreign invaders from another sea, their skin so alien, their language so disgusting it made her stomach churn. The anger as her three closest siblings suffered, fighting a losing fight, fighting so hard only for their legacy to be reduced to nothing, the Four Beast Clan Alliance gone forever.

Pain. Suffering. Death. Shame. Loss, starvation, betrayal. So many memories, so much lingering malice. It burned her, enraged her. It burned her ears, it made her blind, her skin became numb to everything but that all prevalent emotion. Hate. Anger. Wrath. Rage, so much rage, all the rage, choosing her as a vessel, to carry on the wishes. To do what they couldn't do, each soul, each remnant, to rage against everything, to punish everything, to kill everything, to erase everything.

Rage, rageragerageragerage-

The flames reached her own memories as it burned through everything else, filling her mind with memories, with sins she had to find answers to. And then, it made a mistake. The flames, the True Scale thought themselves sneaky. That she would be distracted, too absorbed in the foreign records of the past. That it could, in that time, deal with her. The fire touched her past and immediately tried to burn it. To kill what was Qinglong Shu and bring forth a perfect, empty vessel. But by doing so, it brought them to the forefront. By doing so, the fire awakened Shu.

When she was called a monster, when she was filled with arrogance.

The screams, the night, of when she lost her parents.

Crying herself to sleep, all alone in a foreign place, treated as an outsider by all.

The death of her grandmother, the injustice of a limited life span.

The mangled body of her Big Brother, a good father, who promised to spend more time with her.

The knowledge that they were betrayed, of someone from her own blood. Who stole everything that they stood for, their lives, their treasures, their pride.

Ming. Ming. Ming. Mingmingmingmingming-

"Never let anything or anyone change you, my sweet girl."

The True Scale tried to erase her. Erase what made her Qinglong Shu. Erase every bit of knowledge she possessed, depriving the world of her experiences. It actually dared. The realization hit her in all that pain, as the flames threatened to burn down everything that she was. Rage burned up, more furious Azure Fire coming into existence…and began to follow her, devouring the other flames as if they were an infestation.

Engulfed in the azure fire, Shu finally snapped her eyes open, dragonic eyes twitching with bloodshot veins in the white of them. She roared, shaking the depths of her soul. Then she began to strike. The image of a child stealing money was kicked into smithereens. A knife hand chopped down on the raped woman, at the mercy of a bandit. An elbow shot out, smashing the abandoned prostitute, having prayed for a man to save her. Each memory not her own was struck down and fed to her own fire( anger) . She cut her path through it, extinguishing each and every bit. Soon enough, she saw it, the Azure Dragon, an empty eyed image, a copy of the examiner of her final trial. There was only anger in its eyes. It roared at her, summoning up more memories, more fire. Shu grit her teeth, growling right back. The anger was all consuming. The depth was so deep, that rage. She felt empathy. She understood. However, the most important thing about this fire, that this True Scale seemed to forget…

Was that her anger and its anger were two entirely different things. She acknowledged it. But she would never allow it to reign. To dare to control her. After all, this was her body. Her mind. Her soul. This was her house and she would not be disrespected under her own roof. It had to know its place and she was to be the teacher.

The saying 'do not let rage control you' never applied to her. Mustn't apply to her. It never applied to what she was trying to become. How could one be controlled by the thing that they were? For an Azure Dragon was Wrath. Wrath incarnated. How dare those petty thoughts, those tiny memories, those specks of emotions proclaim to be the cause of the rage that infused her entire being? A mere Scale couldn't match up to a real Dragon. And that was what she was. What she was becoming. It was an insult to everyone that helped her, everything that made Qinglong Shu herself, to lose to a mere fragment. No, that would not stand. Rage, pure, personal rage, formed, infusing her entire being, until not a single bone fragment of hers was devoid of it. No, her Wrath was her own. Nobody else's. In her soul, the small girl, so frail and afraid, grew, to adulthood, then grew more and more, into a giant, until the Azure Dragon that invaded her body appeared to be nothing more than a small looking worm. It snarled at her, but Shu paid it no mind. Instead, she roared down at it.

That tiny lizard wanted to consume her? Absorb her into its own rage? Too bad. Not on her watch. It seemed to misunderstand. Misunderstand their positions, of who the owner of this body, this Qi, this very soul was. She opened her maw, growing in size. Ah, it was so very small. Her teeth sharp, her jaws opening. Wide, wide open…and she chomped down, swallowing the True Scale whole after it failed to defeat her. Failed to take over.

///

In the end, it did it. The Azure Dragon, the first fish that desired to discover, to ascend, was among the very stars. Infinite by nature, it would never be dissatisfied, would always find something new. It laughed and smiled, turning its head to its twin…only to find no one. So lost in its desire to grow stronger, desire to reach the end of all ends, it didn't notice that its brother left as well. It was only natural. The distance was so long. So much longer than the waterfall itself. And it was still bound to their old lives. Realizing its desires weren't pure enough, it decided to go back to the brethren, to teach them what it learned.

Thus, the final Azure Dragon was alone in its goal. Such was nature. But up there, it protected its lesser brethren. Up there, it was satisfied, fulfilling its original goal. It would be waiting, for anyone else to reach it. The top, as long as their desires were pure.

"The end."

Shu was awfully silent by the last stretch of the story. The mother feared she was lacking in her story telling skills. To be fair, she was starting to get a bit tired, having talked for so long. Cultivator or not, her throat was getting dry. Yet the look Shu had on her face, a deep frown, worried her. The mother blinked, tilting her head in confusion. Shu lowered her head before looking up again, lips pressed together.

"Mommy, why did the last dragon never go back down again?"

"What do you mean?" She asked, not sure what she meant.

"Why did it forget about its family? It's friends? It's all alone now. Just…waiting. Instead of going back too."

"It…can't go back anymore," the mother carefully said. It was hard to explain that this story was one big metaphor of cultivation itself. Having ascended so high, there would be none of its family left, long perishing to time. And even if they did…they were beneath it now. It had more important matters to pay attention to. Fortunately, Shu didn't dig deeper. Instead, a childish opinion was left as she lowered her head.

"That's just …sad."

"The mighty are lonely at the top, Shu," the mother said gently. Shu however shook her head furiously.

"That's stupid. It shouldn't be like that."

"It's just how it is."

Shu suddenly shot up. Hands on her hips, she huffed in defiance.

"Well, I'll just not be like that then!"

"Shu?"

She pointed at herself, a cheeky grin on her face.

"Even when I become a big strong dragon, I won't just forget you! I won't be alone up there!"

The mother stared at Shu for a while before shaking her head in amusement.

"What a sight it would be." She ruffled her girl's head. "Good luck then."

It was such a pity that Qinglong Shu would grow up eventually. But for now, the mother had faith in this little dream of hers. Of defying the natural order like this.

///

In the outside world, the convulsions, the screaming, the violent storm of energy, came to a final stop. Then, Shu's fingers twitched and her eyes snapped wide open. She slowly rose to her feed, her expression unfocused, blank. Then, she took a deep breath, bending backwards. Her fingers flexed, her teeth were barred and her eyes shone, more bright than ever, filled with Azure Qi. At last, she roared and her entire form changed.

The human was replaced in an instance, for an instance. The dark clouds dispersed, revealing the top of the mountain to the whole realm.

The Will smiled. A true, genuine one. Hope was such a fickle thing. Awakening old emotions, making them feel so new. It closed its eyes, as if relaxing to a lullaby as it drifted off to sleep, listening to the starting heartbeat of an inheritor, of a descendant. It remembered better times, of its three partners in crime. It remembered the struggles, yet the glory within. Every inane adventurer, every trial. It had been so long since it dreamt of those times. Perhaps it was foolish to believe. However…

Qinglong Ren listened to the roar of the reborn Qinglong Shu that shook existence itself and felt hope for the future. As a fellow sister appeared for just a moment, a fraction of a fraction of a second, it felt faith. Faith that the world would remember. Remember the birth, witness the height and beyond of the Qinglong.( Azure Dragon)

Turn 13 Fates - The Mountain Bell Expedition
Sheng Yu returned to his tent. More reports. He saw the individual reports on each cultivator of note in the Spirit Palace had been marked off, and decided not to read them all. He would review them at a later date, perhaps, but there was so much to be done.

The Mountain Bell Expedition, on the other hand...

Things had gone poorly. Despite the efforts of the Qi Condensation cultivators delivering caches of Spirit Stones, those same caches had been poorly inspected. Currently it was believed it was a mixup in the array-carving part of the process. The Stones were boxed up, and Suppression Arrays caved on the boxes to prevent the Qi from leaking out. This was more to do with preventing theft than anything, and allowing them to be properly hidden and not sensed.

So of course there had been a mixup, and the array-masters who were capable of opening and resealing the boxes had simply been elsewhere at the time, fortifying various things in the Plains, no doubt. The Juniors sent on the mission had not known how to check, and were tasked with not opening the boxes at all.

So a supply chain stretching across the entire Region had delivered Aspirant-grade Spirit Stones - the weakest of all stones, those used to help mortals cultivate - to the waiting arms of the Mountain Bell forces. There had been few enough to deliver them, and when an entire Legion-worth of Mountain Bell forces had aimed to march south, and use these Spirit Stones to bolster their transportation artifacts along the way, they had been attacked by the Demonic Altar. They'd managed to recover quite a few caches, but none of them had the power required to empower the various arrays and transports the Mountain Bell cultivators were using to escort their wounded. When they reached about two-thirds of the way through the chain of caches, they were so disempowered they were surrounded and destroyed wholesale.

A Disaster, with eight thousand or so dead.

Thankfully, the relief force of Experts had gone somewhat better. While the forts sent to be relieved had all fallen, and thousands were dead, some were preserved. Most importantly, the beloved grandson - or was it great-grandson? - of the Grand Elder of the Mountain Bells had been rescued. A Bare Success. While losing all the forts and the allied cultivators hurt, this was ultimately a diplomatic mission, and they had won cachet with the Bells.

The Builder
Fate: The Builder was one of the few who survived the disastrous attempt to rescue a large number of wounded from the Siege of the Bell. The attempt of the Qi Condensation juniors to sneak through and build caches to allow a retreat was seized upon by an entire division of cultivators, eight thousand Qi Condensation Juniors. A series of errors in the part of the Clan however meant that the supplies were simply too few, and several administrative errors meant that high-grade Stones were replaced by low-grade ones, leading to the entire division being encircled and destroyed. With the destruction of this group of cultivators led to the rise of two new Core Formation elders from the Blood Path. However, the Builder himself tried to save what could be recovered, and managed to take a Trefoil Golden Leaf (+60 CY) that contained enough Qi to advance his cultivation massively.

Matthaias Outi
Fate: Matthaias Outi attempted what Cerina did, seeking to distribute Spirit Stones far and wide. In locked caches he did so, dropping them at fifty or sixty waypoints. However, despite the immense danger he was put in, the sealed boxes - graved with an array to prevent any hint of Qi leaking out - were filled with low-grade half-empty Spirit Stones and not the superior Stones he had been promised. Almost dying twice to a pair of Foundation Blood Path cultivators who took their time butchering other cultivators and mortals while playing a sadistic game of cat-and-mouse with him, he returned only to discover that all of his efforts had been in vain due to an administrative error. Thousands had died.

Ajax Tripedes
Fate: Ajax was another unfortunate who never did manage to deliver his payload of Spirit Stones. Chased by a vastly superior enemy - three Blood Path disciples in the 9th Heavenstage, he fled into a deep mine. There he was hunted by both his enemies and a massive snake, nearly one hundred metres long. The hunt went on for three months. Having discovered the snake, a Core Formation Blood Path Elder descended into the mine. Their battle shook the foundations of the mine, and the snake poisoned the Elder, dying in the process. The Elder was forced to retreat, and Ajax was trapped deep beneath the earth, alongside the Beast Core of a creature that had been preparing to rise into Nascent Soul. Running out of air and time, he quickly tried to absorb the entire thing - and against any reasonable odds, succeeded (+140 CY). The massive burst of energy would've killed nine hundred and ninety nine out of any thousand cultivators, but luck combined with talent and grit would go far. The purification of his body let Ajax escape, rising out of the mine and retreating back into Righteous-held lands.

Cerina Polya
Fate: Cerina ventured far and wide into the Mountain Bell lands, and while there secured a small route for a group of allied cultivators to escape, though she never saw them. Creeping through the lands and dropping caches of Spirit Stones, her efforts were dangerous and she was almost caught by an enemy Foundation Expert, but managed to hide until he left. Her life being saved, she fled into a nearby forest, and there found a head far larger than her own, bearing a single emptied eyesocket. Yet when she neared it, a ghostly eye appeared in the socket, and flew out into her own, its power merging into her. Unconscious for nearly a week, when she awoke she discovered she could see even with her eye closed, but upon opening it, the things she stared at would weaken, wither and die. From trees to flowers, to beasts and even human beings. The stronger, the slower, but in a fight her Withering Eye (+8 Impact) made her a fearsome opponent, and one that must be killed quickly. As she left her mission, she assisted an allied Foundation Expert, staying well back in a fight but using her Eye to slowly weaken an enemy Expert enough to allow her own ally to win. For such a contribution she was rewarded greatly, given sufficient stones and cultivation resources to let her reach the 9th Heavenstage in 20 years.

Decimius Diakos
Fate: Decimius was the beneficiary of the great disaster. Nearly ten thousand dead, and he was in the first Heavenstage, delivering a message. As the Blood Path descended upon them and slaughter began, he hid himself and his beasts amidst a pile of corpses, going unnoticed. It was clambering out of the corpse-pile days later that left him with a valuable find. Two Blood Path disciples had killed one another, both in Foundation Building. Their mutual kill had left a small blood-red pendant - the Beastblood Crystal. Absorbing huge amounts of beast's Blood Qi, it was unusable to the Blood Path for the purposes of cultivation. Decimius took it, and fleeing south absorbed it as he went (+60 CY). With the power of the Crystal he reached the 10th Heavenstage quickly, though the disaster in the north had shaken them all.

Ferenike
Fate: Ferenike had returned from retirement, and it was with no small fanfare. Upon meeting with her former protege Tisamenos, he lavished her with gifts, cultivation resources, and festooned her with various items of power. Six or seven powerful items to be used in combat, as well as a piece of Silverblood she could consume herself to gain the power of the Blood of Silver for a few precious minutes.

She would, as it so happened, need it all. The sieges on the four forts they were sent to relieve were going badly. Ferenike used her experience in command to take command of a group of Mountain Bell cultivators, and broke through the siege at Kenshin Fort. The losses were severe, however, and as the Blood Path broke through, she relived her experiences in the original Devil Bee War - safeguarding a group of fleeing cultivators to safety. Of the eight thousand six hundred cultivators in that fort, she managed to personally save two hundred and sixty-two - or at least get them to Lu Fort, where their story continued.

One of them was the great-grandson of the Grand Elder of the Mountain Bell, who gifted her with a massive array of cultivation resources. These, alongside what Tisamenos had given her pushed her cultivation forward massively (+75 CY).

Diomedes Cestus
Fate: Diomedes and Anastasia together fought to evacuate Lu Fort - the only Fort that could be evacuated in full. He managed to ambush and slay a Late Foundation Blood Path Expert, seizing from the terrifying woman a tiny statue. The Lotus-Headed Golden Statue (+6 Impact) could be temporarily transformed into a powerful cultivator, with equal power to its wielder. It would enable the cultivator to fight as two temporarily - though the drain on Qi would more than double, making it a temporary tactic at best.

Anastasia Outi
Fate: It was Anastasia who was forced to distract their enemies as Lu Fort was evacuated. Few could've fought and distracted the Core Formation Elder in charge of the siege, and Anastasia was no exception. Tossed around like a ball, she was nearly killed, and left badly wounded and battered even with the use of a treasure. While she managed to flee, it was a close run thing, and had it not been for the majority of Lu Fort evacuating in good order, she would've been hunted down and killed. As it was she hid for months, able to return to the south a long time afterwards.

Paulus
Fate: Paulus was lucky during his time in the Mountain Bell lands. Tasked to assist in rescuing a number of refugees that had trickled south, he never reached the battles in the Forts. Rather, he saved a trio of array masters from being consumed by Blood Path cultivators. In return, they offered him the Seven Strike Array (+1 Impact), an array that could absorb ambient Qi when set up, and could be used to empower one with seven strikes well above your ordinary level. Difficult to use, but rewarding when ti was.

Xiao Yingzi
Fate: Yingzi fought to relieve Shenzhen City, a former city converted into a fort. To say things went poorly was to say the least. The city was demolished almost in its entirety, and she and Demetrius were sent to retrieve what they could. Saving almost six hundred cultivators between them, the refugee train was raided twice on the way, and only three hundred reached the safety of the south. For Yingzi, however, this was only the prelude to her lucky moment. As she retreated south, a Core Formation Elder had chased the refugees from Lu Fort south, and had engaged them in combat. Yingzi intervened immediately, through luck and talent managing to hold off the Elder until one of their own could be summoned, rescuing the recaptured descendent of the Grand Elder of the Mountain Bell Sect from under the Core Formation Blood Path man's nose. For her efforts, she was lavished with cultivation resources (+60 CY), allowing her to form her Sixth Pillar.

Fate: Demetrius fought at Shenzhen along with Yingzi, and was separated from the refugee column along the way, distracting three Foundation enemies, fleeing into a convenient nearby forest. There he managed to dig several large holes and turn them into deadly traps, wounding his enemies and forcing them into retreat. The last hole he dug contained a peculiar item. The Earth-Binding Shovel (+7 Impact), a shovel that imbued the dirt it dug with Qi to bring it under the command of the wielder. While it only lasted for forty-four hours, a diligent digger could turn piles of dirt into powerful golems and the like to fight against a small army in the right circumstances.

Gaius Antonius
Fate: Gaius and his forces were sent to Molehill Fort, the last and smallest of the Four Forts. Four thousand cultivators, ready to be evacuated. Yet as they were, Gaius found the fort besieged by two Core Formation Elders of the Blood Path. One should've been sufficient to slay him, yet they seemed drastically wary of him, refusing to strike at him or even engage him. Rather, they spent their time there fussing over him and fawning on him personally, even as they slew his men and those he was set over to guard. They eventually cracked the fort, and began a great slaughter. They were only forced to retreat when Gaius repeatedly placed himself in harms way, and their refusal to touch him forced them to retreat. One of them offered him Gem of the Mists (+40 CY), a powerful gem infused with the raw power of the Blood Mists. On receiving it, Gaius advanced even further, and the two Elders retreated, offering him their fondest wishes - while carving a swathe through the refugees. Only a thousand and a half were saved in the end, but Gaius reached the next stage of the Single-Pillar Path.

Turn 13 Fates - The Poison-Crushing Siege
It was a few months later that Yu got word of the Siege. He would've wanted to be in the Plains himself, but... he would not be overall command, and whatever strategic insight he might offer was better left to the lands and people of the Clan.

The Poison-Crushing Siege

... well.

The first report was on the Bramble Tower. Apparently an attempt had been made to grow a new peculiar tower that would extend the Poison Maze with. The usual sorts of things one expected from the monsters they fought - tens of thousands of mortals dead, blood sacrifices, and so on and so forth. A desperate attempt by some Disciples had stopped it - it was one of fourteen attempts the Noble Knowledge Sect had made, and apparently thirteen had succeeded. Only where the Clan had been placed were they pushed back.

He would have to ask the Archegetes for permission to write a smug missive.

Still, the Tower was destroyed, but much of the Maze rose around it. The fact that it began to rise at all meant it was able to link into the Poison Maze's network, and the area around it was ultimately doomed. They had held the Noble Knowledge Sect back for a decade or two, but that was the best they could offer. A Bare Success, but something to celebrate.

Now, the Foundation Experts, on the other hand... he had tasked them with attempting to infiltrate Chunwang, and kill an Elder held there. Rescue him if possible, but he couldn't live to be interrogated fully.

Apparently the Ninth Prince had led a revolt there, having the city's slaves and experiments rise up, burning much of it down. They'd used the confusion to infiltrate Chunwang and steal the Elder away, though apparently his mind was gone. A Major Success, and something he'd enjoy holding over the Bear Enslavement Sect's head for centuries to come.

Abel Angelus
Fate: Abel was one of the cultivators who was tasked with evacuating nearly ten thousand mortals from the path of the Noble Knowledge cultivators - villages and towns too small to defend. With a sweeping effort, he managed to construct a crude Qi-Engine, attaching it to a number of carts and the like to help evacuate those who could not simply run. He managed to assist in evacuating two-thirds of the mortals, and returned to assist in the final destruction of the Bramble Tower. If it had risen up fully, it would've taken multiple Core Elders to destroy, but by using both his understanding of physics and Qi in unison, managed to send one such cart explosively into the growing wall, allowing others to seek for its core.

In truth, the success of the mission here was entirely on his shoulders - the Bramble Tower had been prevented from growing too far, and only he had managed to devise a method of breaking its growing defenses. Exhausted by the effort, he fell back.

Samson Murus
Fate: Samson and Constantine were the only two cultivators who reached the Bramble-Heart, a relatively weak heart of a powerful creature, but growing stronger by the minute. It was Samson who managed to sever the first piece of the Bramble-Heart from itself, which immediately fused into him, attempting to control him and consume him for the Bramble Tower. Samson overcame it, gaining the Bramble Blood (+3 Impact), less a bloodline and more an effect of having fused the Heart into himself. When struck, black and dangerous brambles would form from his blood, woody and tough, attempting to encircle and trap his enemies. They were incredibly tough, and would grow tougher if an enemy struggled against them and bled within him. Each blow struck against him was a dangerous one. He could also bleed himself willingly to use this effect en masse, allowing him a powerful technique at the cost of his own stamina.

He rose to Foundation Establishment soon after the mission was completed.

It constantly aimed to wound him, brambles shooting out, and at the last he managed to destroy it, though with its deathblow it would've wounded him badly had he not consumed a treasure.

Katha Theodoros
Fate: Katha was one of many Qi Condensation cultivators fighting back against the growth of the Poison Maze, where a new and powerful tower of brambles was forming. She descended deep beneath the tower, where she discovered one of the reagants of the Maze's unnatural growth. While the Maze itself merely used it as fuel, the Purified Ironblood that lay under it and served as a source of occasional, difficult-to-digest energy was far beneath the ground. As she passed through, she seemingly moved through portals and space in ways that were not quite correct, reaching near the heart of the Maze itself, an area guarded with all manner of ghosts and zombified beasts.

The reanimated corpse of a guardian beetle there peculiarly let her pass, despite being in the top echelon of Core strength. She reached a pool of pure iron - the very idea of Iron, of strength, rigidity, invincibility. Naturally, she did what any sensible person would do and attempted to absorb it all into her body.

Instead, it rose up, transforming itself into a person of iron, and attempted to possess her entirely. For seven days and nights she grappled with the pure Ironblood, and in the end she walked out... changed. The rigidity of the Blood of Iron had melded into her very being, her words more metallic, rust occasionally appearing on her, needing to be sanded off.

Yet for all this, she had earned a body like none the Clan had seen in millenia. The True Blood of Iron (+14 Impact) made her powerful in ways that the Blood of Bronze did not, for the Blood of Bronze was the blood of those who worked together, the sons and daughters of the phalanx. The True Blood of Iron was the sword of the lone warrior, the shield-shattering blade of the mighty. While recovery was next to impossible, so was harm - with speed, strength, and resilience alike, few could truly harm Katha now, though she found herself with a substantial vulnerability to water.

A Core Formation Elder would be the minimum to harm her with an ordinary blow, though she could be harmed in other ways. She was nearly twenty times heavier than she had been, weighing far more than iron should. Without the use of Qi to lighten her steps, she would shatter chairs, sink through floors, and leave holes in the ground. Relatively invincible, her blows were incredibly quick and deadly - though her mind could no longer keep up with the speed her body was capable of outputting, making battle far more difficult than it seemed - even striking at Qi Condensation enemies was difficult when one could not control one's speed.

She left, causing a Foundation Expert to flee as she did so, enabling the bare success of the overall mission.

Fate: Of those who left on that mission to Chunwang, Mildgyð was by far the weakest. This was no slight - for infiltrating the city was dangerous no matter your cultivation level, but Mildgyð was assuredly the most in danger. Part of Aretaphilia Myia's plan, Mildgyð snuck into a encampment of experiments, and began a small riot, freeing a few creatures. The riot was ruthlessly crushed, and six enforcers from Chunwang hunted Mildgyð down - yet in that moment of distraction, the greater plan could come together. He ended up losing them in the sewers, managing to survive a place full of poison and misery to escape Chunwang entirely, escorting a trio of refugees from the riots on his way.

Magnus Centenius
Fate: Where others fought, Magnus plotted. Deep within Chunwang he was hidden, brewing poisons and the like to prepare for the uprising to come. Puppets and poisons and more, all awaiting that singular moment. When the riot arose, so did the Spirit-Shattering Poison, a gas that corroded and eventually shattered spiritual materials of all kinds. For most blades and the like, this was immaterial, but for the bonds that kept so many... well, they shattered, all across the city. With their freedom at hand, Aretaphilia Myia's song could strengthen them enough to fight, and fought they did. The poison cultivator struck upwards from the sewers, taking out enemies one by one, aiding the slowly-losing riot as he did so. Unfortunately for him, he struck upwards at a puppet of a Nascent Soul - one that struck him immediately, blade-arm imbued by a droplet from the Mother of Poisons, that tremendous Nascent Spider. Others would've died immediately, yet Magnus found a way to incorporate it into his very cultivation. An attempt that should've killed him, yet left him in perfect health (+120 CY).

He survived, and left afterwards, the absorption having weakened him greatly temporarily.

Ninth Prince
Fate: The Ninth Prince initially led the revolt flamboyantly, allowing himself to be 'crushed' by a trio of Core Elders, all of whom were desperately putting down the riot aiming to recover their experimental subjects. From there, he simply left - alongside Rina Callista. As they descended into one of the central dungeons in Chunwang, the alarms were alerted, and Lord Ironbone of the three Elders remained to crush the revolt. The other two came for the Ninth Prince and Rina Callista, and they were well-prepared. Slicing through the defense of Rina at horrific speeds, she was beaten and driven back, and they were at risk of failing. With little time left before more forces gathered, they split up. The Ninth Prince would fight them both, while Rina rescued the Elder. In a series of exceptionally eye-catching and distracting fights, the Ninth Prince managed to hold off the two Elders, getting weaker by the minute as he did so. At the final moment, it seemed they had found a way to banish his ghost form entirely, and he was forced to flee or risk true death - the Elders of the Noble Knowledge Sect were experts in this matter. Yet despite fleeing, he had bought enough time.

He retreated, and plundered the quarters of Elder Ghostface, gaining a Spirit Bell (+30 CY) that he could use to advance himself even further. Wrecking their quarters as he fled, he hoped to buy Rina a little more time.

Aretaphila Myia
Fate: Stripped of his powers, the Great Circle Elder Yawning Bearking was trapped within the lands of the Poison Maze. In truth, he should've been killed, but they were taking him to Chunwang, where a new process would strip him of his memories, giving them over to the use of the Noble Knowledge Sect. Yet to torture a Core Formation elder into sufficient compliance to seize their mind is no easy thing, and for well over a year Elder Bearking had resisted. The mission of five Foundation cultivators - among them two Single Pillar Kings - was to break him out, or, failing that, to slay him. The old man had knowledge on how to bypass several key defenses of the Bear Enslavement Sect, and several ventures into the Noble Knowledge Lands had failed. Even a Nascent raid had been repulsed, and so it fell to subterfuge. Aretaphilia Myia was one of the five, and while others began the raid itself, she raised up a great revolt in Chunwang. In that city of torturous experimentation, thousands of beasts and kidnapped cultivators were rescued by her, and empowered to try and break out - all to provide cover for the attempt to rescue Elder Bearking.

Thousands died, and to her credit, sixty-two of the escaped prisoners survived and managed to leave Noble Knowledge lands of the two and a half thousand prisoners she managed to rescue and incite into revolt. It was during this time she faced down and crippled a Noble Knowledge Elder, Lord Ironbone. A man who had replaced his entire skeleton with metals he could thrust through his very flesh to fight with, the Elder was nearly torn apart by the furious hordes under Aretaphilia's command, and as he fled she seized a Moonlight Droplet (+40 CY) from him - an intensely valuable cultivation resource.

Rina Callista
Fate: Rina Callista reached Elder Bearking alone, and for good reason. Her Dao-powers were those best suited to freeing someone quickly, and so she tore his chains from the wall, and manuevered away most quickly. She had fought two Core Formation Elders, participated in a revolt, and carried the unconscious Elder on her back as she fled. The two Elders - Ghostface and Burst-Teeth she fought had been her match more than entirely, which was no small surprise. She could only manage to flee, and flee she did - her mobility far outpacing that of the two Core Formation experts, who had spent long centuries cooped up in the city of Chunwang. Reuniting with the other Experts with Elder Bearking, the Ninth Prince gave her a gift. A small piece of Heavenly Light, trapped like amber in a pane of peculiar glass. She was able to shatter it, and consume the Light entirely, using it as a cultivation resource as they travelled from the lands of the Poison Maze. (+20 CY)

Xiuying Ten Jiang Supplementary - Fighting Style
Xiuying Ten Jiang Supplementary - Fighting Style

After her excursion into the Yuan Secret Realm and the trials that she faced within, Xiuying's fighting style has evolved into a much more complex and more flexible style of swordsmanship.

Originally, Xiuying's swordsmanship was almost purely focused on putting everything into a singular cut that was almost certain to cut anything in its path. This style of fighting was reliant on firm footing, skillfully utilising the entire body in order to perform a singular swing at full power, and an unfathomable Will to Cut. Emptying her mind, Xiuying cuts down her foe through her Will.

In most cases, Xiuying's goal in combat is to cut down the opponent in a single cut. A difficult task in many cases but made possible due to the nature of Sword Law and its singular focus on the principle art of cutting. Usually, a charging swing is enough to kill Xiuying's opponent.

However, if the opponent fails to die or successfully dodges the attack, Xiuying's effective combat ability briefly drops as she spends precious moments repositioning herself for another attack. While repositioning herself, Xiuying has learnt how to avoid her opponent's attack with as little wasted movement as possible.

However, as Xiuying faced off against many kinds of opponents, she soon began to realise that she could no longer solely rely on her simple attack. While her cut was almost impossibly lethal to those in her great realm, if she could not strike her opponent, it was meaningless.

After her first duel and subsequent loss against Long Min, Xiuying was made painfully aware of the flaws in her fighting style. Driven by frustration and shame over her defeat, Xiuying delved deeper into the nature of Sword Law and its otherworldly nature.

In the time between her defeat and her rematch, Xiuying attuned herself to five of the royal syllables and developed five distinct combat stances that resonate with each Word of Power that she has learnt. While she has yet to truly comprehend them as such as task would require true enlightenment or a significant amount of power and experiences, just knowing the Words of Power confers strength to Xiuying's spiritual pillar and her cut.

After the Jingshen War and her excursion into the Qiguai Secret Realm, she has attuned herself to another Word of Power and created yet another stance, utilising the technique that she inherited from the echo of the Sword Dao Seeker from before the Sea-Conquering Army's arrival.

Currently, Xiuying has developed the following stances: -

Flame - The Flame stance is usually Xiuying's opening stance. It is the embodiment of Xiuying's passion for the sword or at least the art of cutting. It is characterised by powerful singular strikes made from various angles. Speed of action is the main attribute of this stance, as Xiuying was taught that her first strike in combat should ideally be the killing blow as well and that she needed to be able to close in on her opponent without fail. It is the stance closest to Xiuying's original fighting style. In this stance, Xiuying will usually seek to decapitate her opponent though she does not shy aware from bisecting her enemies or dismembering them.

Beast - The Beast stance is one that Xiuying uses when she has been disarmed or otherwise unable to use a sword. Originally, Xiuying made use of basic unarmed combat techniques that she learned during her legionnaire training. Realising that these techniques had low compatibility with her, Xiuying decided to try and copy wild animals. Most of her techniques in her stance are simple, straightforward yet wild, unpredictable and animalistic movements and attacks, along with a brutality not normally present in her other stances. Every part of her body becomes a deadly weapon. In Beast Stance, Xiuying seeks to rip and tear apart her foe until they are either dead or she manages to get her hands on a sword again, whichever comes first. There are also several sword techniques that she can use in Beast Stance.

Glory - The Glory Stance is a stance that Xiuying uses when Xiuying is up against an opponent too agile for her to normally strike down in Flame Stance. In Glory Stance, Xiuying strikes with flowing piercing thrusts. Rather than using cuts, Xiuying uses piercing attacks to deal damage with a far greater focus on both footwork and agility. Since she isn't cutting, she allows herself to send forth a barrage of piercing attacks that she would normally never perform with a cut. She aims for vital points and joints, seeking to debilitate her opponent's ability, strength and movement. Dancing around her opponent, the emanations from her qi creates the illusion of petals as she thrusts her blade forwards and back for the attack. This is however, her weakest technique, used mostly to injure her opponent and debilitate their movements enough to properly cut them down. While capable of killing, it lacks the innate lethality that Xiuying's cuts have.

Tower - The Tower Stance is Xiuying's most defensive stance. Focusing almost everything on defence, Xiuying firmly plants herself on the ground and prepares herself to defend against all attacks. She parries, deflects, blocks, or simply cuts any attack before they can do her harm. Her senses are pushed to their limits to predict and precisely defend against her opponent's attacks. Though it seems like Xiuying is entirely focused on defence, in reality, Xiuying is preparing herself for when she must break down her guard for even a perfectly built impenetrable tower will mean death if one can not leave it. Upon releasing her guard, the earth shatters as she kicks off the ground, the strength she used to become near immovable transformed into movement, her sword flashing like lightning striking a tower to bring ruin to her opponent.

Diamond - The Diamond Stance is Xiuying's one of her more exhausting stances as well as her riskiest one. Pushing her senses and brainpower to the limit, Xiuying analyses her opponents' movements, visually in her mind her opponent's capabilities and fighting style as a raw unprocessed gemstone. As she fights or observes her opponent, this mental raw gemstone is processed and cut into a beautifully cut gemstone, representing Xiuying's complete understanding of her opponent's fighting style. Once this mental gemstone is fully cut, Xiuying has completed her analyse of her opponent and is able to accurately predict and counter her opponent's technique and attacks. Diamond Stance is difficult for Xiuying to use as it requires her to hold back her Will while she analyses her opponent but once the analysis is complete, thought is discarded properly as her Will surges forth with far greater strength and lethal precision.

Mind - The Mind Stance is Xiuying least lethal stance but at the same time one of her most terrible ones as well. In this stance, Xiuying unleashes the full force of her desire to cut and concentrates it solely on her opponent. Unless they have a lot of Willpower or some kind of mental defence technique, her opponent will suffer a hallucination of being cut. So realistic is this hallucination that they will find themselves confused when they realise they have not been cut. However, as Xiuying continues to focus her cutting intent upon them, her opponent will continue hallucinating themselves being cut down. Eventually, Xiuying's opponents who are unable to deal with her cutting intent suffer a mental breakdown as the stress of being killed over and over again without any means of resistance overwhelms their minds and body. This stance differs from her technique to cut with just a thought as Xiuying does not intentionally cut her opponent with thought but rather overwhelms them with her insanely intense desire to cut.

Blade - Blade Stance is Xiuying's most powerful and most dangerous stance. It would be better to call it a technique rather than a stance except that in order to use it, Xiuying needs to bring forth every bit of strength and power that she can muster from her body in order to exert the force needed to perform a cut while in Blade Stance requiring some time to concentrate and gather power. Utilising every technique and ability that she has, Xiuying has successfully created a cut of immense power and destruction. In essence, Xiuying uses her spatial cut technique to temporarily cut herself out of existence. In the place in between existence and non-existence, Xiuying focuses her strength, drawing out every bit of power from her body to forcibly swing her blade down with immense force. Imbuing this cut with her Severing Strike technique and the full force of her Sword Intent, Xiuying cuts her way back into reality. She cuts away the notion of impossibility in her action as she does so, and her blade emerges from the aether, coming down at her chosen target with unbelievable amounts of energy trailing behind it. As it makes contact with the air around it, the energy erupts with incredible explosive force. Everything around the point of impact is engulfed in atomic flames and force. Only those with powerful defensive items and techniques as well as Life-Preserving treasures of the evasive type can hope to avoid being slain by this attack. At her present stage, Xiuying can only unleash this technique once before collapsing from both physical and spiritual exhaustion.

Year 221

The Estate of House Theodoros was as quiet and listless as it had ever been. Its fields had remained largely quiet ever since it's young scions reached their majority and began their duties as Cultivators of the Golden Devil Clan, each of them finding great success and demonstrating great talent as they did so. One had caught the eye of a talented Magister Mechanikos and seemed destined to become a brilliant Array Engineer. The other had caught the eye of a terrifying cyclops of a King, and had been inducted into what would be the most eclectic of the Clan's Legions soon enough.

Both were home at the same time today, a rare thing for Cultivators of their talent and responsibilities despite their young age, a time where their peers were still chasing Contribution Points by performing menial chores at the Dawn Fortress, manning outposts, and on rare occasions serving as ancillary support for bandit suppression missions. The boy of bronze and girl of iron each stood at attention before their wizened grandfather in his study, the lines that wore into his forehead not those of age but of weariness instead. Even months after the encounter with the Myia Matriarch, he continued to wear a face like he had personally overseen the dishonourable death of his granddaughter.

Though, Katha thought blithely to herself, that was probably what it felt like to him. Legatus Aretaphilla had quite the noted effect on him.

Grunting, hands clasped on a desk intended for the Head of the Family but more fitting for a Core Elder or even a Nascent Soul, Tormenos looked at each of his grandchildren. His hopes, his heirs. "Are the two of you well?"

"Quite well." "Yes, grandfather."

It was still unusual for Katha, to be regarded with this much concern. The man had been an exacting taskmaster during training periods and apathetic outside of them. She still knew little of how to make of him. Resentment was pointless, and his concerns - now known to her - were a mitigating factor. But even so, he had done poorly by her for a long time. But he was Patriarch, and he was still her grandfather, so respect it was.

"Good, good. I hope the Ninth Prince didn't break you too much." He plucked a jade slip from his sleeves and placed it on his table, pushing it towards each of them. Rathos and Katha each exchanged looks, not sure what to make of this. "Inscribed within this is a record of our family's old lands, cross-referenced against the most detailed map I could find of the former territories. The Sorrowful Blacksmiths still squat on a great many of our Clan's legacies, including the vaults of many Houses, and this family is no exception. When one of you have entered the Foundation Building stage, do find the time to venture into the old lands. There may be something there that could help shed some light on the mysteries of our heritage."

He had turned to look at Katha briefly as he said that, and the girl had not missed the implication. In her veins she carried an unusual variant of the Blood of Bronze, one that left her hair streaked with silver and her skin light, her footfalls not nearly as heavy as those of her peers. From what her grandfather seemed to imply, this was not a variant unknown to the family, though what it was he still seemed to keep a secret.

No, she further reflected; he still seemed to be ignorant of. There was no good reason to keep it secret from her, as the only bearer of this strange blood. She would be just as committed to its restoration, and he was already two hundred, unlikely to awaken this bloodline. There was no jealousy between family amongst the Theodoroi, upwards or downwards.

Simply put, he did not know. And he hoped she could find the truth.

"As you know, the legacies of the Clan are tied to our bloodline, and protected by powerful Arrays that keep all outsiders from laying claim to them. Our family is no exception. I myself have made the journey once, alongside your mother. The journey is dangerous; I would not allow anyone without an Expert's escort to go there." He sighed deeply. "Of our legacies we had recovered plenty, but there remains a vault beneath Mt. Spartrea. Its doors did not answer to your mother or me. Perhaps it will answer to one of you."

The reasoning was sound on the surface. Rathos was in truth the first truly brilliant Array Engineer the House has had in generations, and Katha's bloodline may well have been a long lost heritage. Either of them could be the key to gaining access to what lay within.

The way Rathos looked at her, though, Katha knew that even he was sceptical that his skills would matter more than her blood.

"Understood, grandfather," Katha said with a nod. "We'll take a look once we find time, after Rathos rises into Foundation Building."

Rathos held his gaze on her for a second longer, but then he nodded as well. "As and when that may be. I'll see what I can do."

"Good… Good, both of you. I daren't hope for a resurgence, but in each of you I see promise." As Tormenos stood, so too did Rathos and Katha. Then, unexpectedly, their grandfather clasped them both on the shoulders. "Please, don't die. Don't follow your mother. Don't throw away your futures. This family cannot afford another dead hero."

It was a rare show of humanity. There was nothing Katha could do but nod and follow her brother out of his office, the doors closing behind her with a weighty thud.

Outside, by the fields they once sparred in, Rathos turned to her. "So, are you heading for the Thirteenth?" He asked. Katha nodded. "You're becoming a King, then?"

It was all but expected. The Fourth Keystone was a point of madness, and all who reached it invariably crossed into the Lonely Pillar. Everyone else of note rose at the Eleventh, or even the Twelfth. It was madness to go for the Thirteenth and not walk that exclusive path. And yet, Katha was still undecided. She had not reached a judgement on that decision.

Her answer was, instead, entirely tangential and outrageous.

"I'm going to Qiguai," she said instead.

Her brother, lacking a drink to spit out, simply stared at her, dumbfounded. He looked at her like she had grown a third eye and massive fangs that dripped with poisoned hissing snakeblood.

"What, was ten years of dying not enough?" He asked her bluntly, like a sledgehammer.

Katha frowned. "Ten years cultivating."

"You flushed your meridians to capacity! I've tried it once, I gave up before I even got close! It's painful to even get close, and you were at your absolute limit the entire time! And you want to go through that again?"

"Yes," Katha nodded.

Lacking for words or answers, Rathos simply slapped her. The sound was awful, like smashing steel poles. Neither was particularly bruised, which was why Rathos went for the backswing. Nonplussed, Katha did not even bother to stop him.

"Are you quite done," she asked evenly after the backhand blow.

"You're an idiot," Rathos blurted out.

Automatically, an instinct ingrained into her very genes, Katha took a breath before she responded. "And you're a nerd, what's your point?"

The fact they did not immediately resort to violence was a demonstration of remarkable personal growth on both their parts.

----

Year 236

A year since the Clan's overwhelming victory, and it still seemed like a dream. A decisive victory over the Jingshen, in her lifetime. The Archgetes, killing two Nascent Souls in a single engagement. The 501st had even played a notable role in the final clash against both Grand Elders of the Jingshen Clan.

And she had not been there at all. No, she had been systematically hunted down by a Jingshen Bei and then crippled within an inch of her life.

Wulong was right. She was a genius no longer. For all that she had her answer, it did not make her journey easier one bit.

And right after informing her grandfather of her injuries in person - while demonstrating that, yes, she was still alive, don't worry her Legion was overseeing her treatment, thank you for the Shackle Spirit Charm it will be most appreciated grandfather - her brother was right there in front of her, telling her so.

"You're an idiot," Rathos sighed.

This time, Katha had no automatic reply to fire back. It was true, she was an idiot. Two treasures expended and a life nearly lost for nearly nothing.

That said, nearly nothing was not nothing. And she made that amply clear by thwapping her brother on the forehead, before wincing in pain at the difference in their constitutions. She was still made of iron, but he actually had working meridians. And not content with letting her sister pass her by and still preparing for his own ascension, he had risen into the Tenth Heavenstage, and was still wildly ahead of the standard their mother had set. But the First Keystone was enough for him; from this point on, he was pursuing Ascension.

"Dipshit," she said with a scowl, and from her satchel produced a bronze shard as long as her shin. "I got this at least. Can you do anything with this?"

It was out of her hands before she even finished the sentence. Rathos was pouring over it with a surveyor's keen eye, marvelling at its purity by markers that she scarcely recognised. "Katha, this is ancestral bronze. One of our ancestors got turned into this!" He held it up to the sun, more for the shade than anything. "A… A Core Ancestor! This is old, really old. As the right weapon it could cross Small Realms!"

"What about a shield?" she asked.

Rathos looked back at her with a severe frown, all but ready to reprimand her for asking something so silly. Then, he remembered the Hornsword, and decided that not wanting a second weapon might be his sister finally erring on the side of caution.

"...Yeah. Yeah, a shield could do it too. It's no Treasure, but it could give you an edge against offensive weapons." He nodded sharply once. "Any thoughts on shape and property?"

"Yeah, just two things. I want it to be compact and assemble quickly." With a weighty grunt, she held the Hornsword before her. "And I want it to be able to withstand a blow from this thing."

Rathos blinked. He frowned. Then, looking between the bronze shard and his sister, his shoulders slumped. "Yeah… Yeah, I could do it. Gonna need to beg my Master for help, but it's doable. When's the 501st moving out?"

"Not anytime soon. You have a couple years at least."

"Good. Not like you're going along, anyways, you're as fucked up as they come."

In truth she was going to go along with wherever the Legion went, whether or not Aretaphilla wanted her to come along. But Katha kept her mouth shut. No reason to antagonise her brother now that slap fights actually hurt. So instead, her answer would be tangential and outrageous.

"I'm probably not becoming a Single Pillar King," she said, with the sort of determination one should not be putting into a statement that boiled down to 'I'm still not sure'.

Rathos, however, simply sighed and nodded his head. "I get it. You're in no shape to be trying for the Fourth Keystone anyways. Preparing for ascension is your best bet if you want to get ready."

"I'm still trying for the Thirteenth," Katha clarified. "I'm just not becoming a King."

"...Wait. Wait, is that even possible?"

Katha nodded. "No one's done it so far, but that doesn't actually mean anything."

"...You know what? Fair." A pause. Then, Rathos made his own tangential and outrageous statement. "I'm going to be performing the Whirlpool Yin Technique during my own Tribulation."

A thousand answers swirled through Katha's mind in an instant as she sought to process those words. A thousand questions followed. Does her father know? Does Marlissa? What the hell is Rathos thinking? Does he really need the cultivation aid?

Absurdity begot absurdity. With no other recourse realistically available to her, she decided to double down. "I always knew you were a little girl at heart."

"...Stop being normal. You just got crippled. Aren't you supposed to be horribly depressed?"

"Extremely," she lied. There was no situation where being inches from death and at the mercy of the kindness of others is not aggravating, but it had been over a year and the Clan was now the Desert Hegemon. Depression was for losers - quite literally, as the Jingshen census was quickly showing. "But that doesn't mean I can't hand out putdowns when I need to. So why are you turning into a girl? And for how long?"

Rathos sucked on his teeth. "I'll revert either while ascending to Core or while there for a boost. But ultimately, I'm stuck in a rut. Hopefully this will help me figure things out."

"Yeah, hopefully," Katha nodded. The topic was headed to serious places about purposes and dreams and, frankly, she did not need that discussion with her own twin brother right now. Then, a smirk splayed across her features. "So, tell me about your plans for the shield."

"...Woman, you literally just gave me this bronze--"

"That's plenty of time for you! Now out with it, you know you want to tell me."

Rathos breathed in and out, but there was no heat or irritation in him, just a calming mnemonic as he was called out for the truth. "The basic shape is going to be a radial aspis, but I'm thinking that we could start with a bracer with an unfurling mechanism. It's gonna have to lock into a solid shape to withstand any real impact, so that means…"

While her brother nerded out, Katha smiled. "You're such a nerd."

Without skipping a beat, Rathos retorted, also with a smile. "And you're an idiot, what's your point?"

The hug they shared was equal parts heartwarming and weird, and they disengaged as quickly as possible.

That was a demonstration of remarkable growth on both their parts.

"...So anyways, about payment--"

"We'll talk about that later. Don't ruin the moment, you awkward ding dong."

"...Alright."

Carvos - Breakthrough
Carvos breakstrough

"one hundred and twenty-five hundred and thirty " Carvos grinned as he cut through five more blood path bandits with a wide grin on his face. normally Hera would be reprimanding him for charging ahead of his allies but she shorty was not her to badger him as she was on another mission she had told him to wait at home but that was boring. so he had simply asked for a mission that seemed like a fun time it certainly was "one hundred and fifty" he announced swinging his way of battle feeling it drink on the strength of the slain.

he ignored the feeling and focused on the fight his grin growing wider and wider with every swing and life taken. these blood path bandits were putting up a good fight but they were just not quite good enough all of his training with Hera had toughed his skin to that of steel he could ignore a lot more pain now and he knew how to block with his axe now.

just then through the red haze that had become his vision, a sword came at him from below by instinct he jumped to the side and stuck out with his way of battle only for the blade to be blocked. A thrill of joy shot through Carvos finally a strong opponent he was talking to Carvos but he did not hear the man instead he took the moments pause to hook the way of battle around the man's sword arm and pulled unbalancing the man. Carvos did not hesitate and punched the man in the face feeling his nose give way with a crunch.

Carvos knew how this would end from experience his foe would drop his sword and then be beheaded by him that was...unacceptable this would have been a great fight I the fool had not monologued like an arrogant young master he would have to draw this out a bit. so instead of beheading him, Carvos relieved him of his non-sword baring hand so that he could fight properly even with that wound.

Stepping back Carvos expected the man to leap at him inraged by the injury but that did not happen instead he wailed in pain dropping his sword to clutch at his stump. This pissed Carvos off how dare such a man to deny him the battle he desired this is why he hated the blood path so much it allowed weaklings like this to gain undeserved power.

With an air of finality, Carvos marched over and split the man in two with the way of battle uncaring that he had broken through to the tenth heavenstage.

"two hundred" he muttered to himself completing today's score he hoped Hera had killed less than him as then she would put a bit more power into their bouts it would make up for today's disappointment. He then remembered that he had allies in this mission that had been meticulously planning a trap for these bandits. But that had been pouring so Carvos had charged at them and had kept swinging his Way of Battle until he had met today's disappointment.

He turned round to see his allies had followed in his wake and had finished off those Carvos had missed. One thing Carvos could not quite understand was why they were looking at him so nervously and were trying to avert their gaze away from his it truly puzzled him. Even he knew he had a reputation within the golden devils but he did not really care all that much for it.

he knew one thing for sure from experience Hera was going to give him more than just a lecture when he got back he looked forward to it.
with a grin that made his fellow golden devils flinch, he set off bach home that punishment bout with Hera was going to be intrusting.

@ReaderOfFate here's an omake for Carvos if possible I would like a life-saving treasure I hope the mood to write strikes me again

Spiros Wan- Good Seed Background
Good Seed Background : Spiros Wan
his parents were cultivators of some small talent, who took the blood of Bronze in the hopes of gaining benefits for themselves. Upon realizing how smal ltheir talents truly were, and knowing that their resolve was weak they embarked on a grand project in the hopes of drawing Elder Destasia's eye. They constructed a grand Panoplia, using their own blood to make the bronze and working tirelessly for a century their creation was fully 30 feet tall, operated from the inside by the pilot manipulating a series of chains.

Unfortunately, 'what if Panoplia but big' was not an enticing enough research proposal for Destasia to justify lifespan increases or tribulation aid for them, so just before their lifespan limit was reached, they arranged to have themselves smelted into gravebronze, leaving it and their creation to their young son, concieved because they knew their efforts were likely fruitless.

Spiros Wan is a slight boy of pale complexion. Ever since he was 10, he has been helping with his parents' creation, and since he achieved the first heavenstage of Qi Condensation, he has been contributing his own blood. Now armed with the mechanical armor his parent's designed, he seeks to prove that it is truly a creation worthy of praise and emulation.

21 years old, 1st heavenstage

Cool Thing: a Xianxia Mecha created by his parents and incorporating their gravebronze, that he contributes his own blood to, justifying why it gets stronger as he increases in cultivation.

the thing is its easy for it to become stale I do feel like making him shout leeroy Jenkins due to his cultivation
Well, then, you need to find something for him to do that isn't fighting. Describe a situation in which his belligerence is ineffective, where he has a problem that simply doesn't involve killing anyone or anything, and has no idea how to cope and has to learn something other than "continue to be an axe murderer."

Maybe have him meet a fellow who focuses on maximum destruction over worthy fights, serving as a sort of dark mirror? Perhaps a recurring Blood Path rival who's interested in Way of Battle?

Alternatively, a Noble Knowledge sect escapee who might muse on how Carvos is, for all his faults, much better than any of them. Or a NK follower who serves as an Affably Evil foil in that he's usually more pleasant to be around and much better at following a plan, but fully capable of doing experiments that give even his superiors pause, if only because they wish they'd thought of it.

Spiros Wan 1 - Inheritance
Spiros Wan 1 Inheritance
Spiros was deep inside the inner workings of his parent's machine, still unnamed when he got the news. Having just finished installing an improved knee joint in the left leg, the messenger knocked on the greaves and left the two large ingots and a note. Spiros could hear the messenger beating a hasty retreat . Extricating himself from the machine, he saw the gravebronze and knew that his parents, who had worked on the machine for so long, had sacrificed themselves to become a part of it. The note was an administrative matter, his parents had left him their contribution points, few as they were after investing so many resources into their life's work.

But where to put it. Gravebronze had many advantages over the Bloodbronze that comprised most of the machine, being stronger, able to hold a sharper edge and having higher spiritual potency, so deciding which part or parts of the machine to reinforce could make a huge difference in performance. Forging a spear for the machine would give it more reach and offensive power, but perhaps the material would be better used to reinforce the arms, or for a shield, or for all manner of different things. Agonizing over the decision for what felt like days, Spiros truly began to feel the absence of his parents. Though they had many faults, taking overly long to consider a decision was not one of them. That drew his attention to other things, like how he would never again receive a hug from them, or learn more with them about talisman crafting or the subtle arrays that improved the machine's function. His mind made up, he unlatched the chains that allowed the machine to move, taking them and his father's Gravebronze , taking them to the small forge built into his family home, and began the laborious process of breaking a link of the chain , reforging it with a splinter of Gravebronze, and attaching it to the new chain. This process did take days, with no imagining required, and Spiros quickly got into a rhythm that he found meditative.

His father had always been smiling, never letting the mockery of his peers or his slow cultivation get him down. Always, he would have some plan that he hoped would deliver he and his family to greatness, and though it never worked out, was not the earnest attempt worthy of praise? Shouldn't others have been hopeful that his next plan would work, rather than stifling their laughter after his latest failure? Spiros thought it so, and yet that isn't what happened, so he could not fail in his task, the last and greatest of his father's plans.

The chains were done, and restored to their proper place, ready to move at the pilot's command. The next step was removing the external torso armor, and extricating the cockpit. Spiros heated his mother's Gravebronze until it was malleable, coating the inside of the cockpit with it.

His mother always had such a strong love of life, most of those pushing 150 in the 6th heavenstage would simply accept their fate, but his mother had simply doubled down on trying to get her Magnum opus noticed by the elders. Her tenacity should not be forgotten, so Spiros would have to live as long as possible, at least until he had a successor.

The cockpit was reinstalled, and the breastplate to cover it. Spiros looked at the machine, his parents legacy, and thought it good. He had already completed basic training, but no legion was really enthusiastic about hiring someone as thin and anemic as him, whose noncombat skills were eclectic and focused on something that precious few others thought was worth anything. Sure a legion would buy him eventually for a bargain bin price just to pad their numbers, but Spiros wanted to be hired on his merits, not because he was the cheapest legionnaire with a pulse. Since legionnaires needed to actually be in a Legion to accept requests from the Contribution point board, he would have to get a bit creative. E knew that some legionnaires enlisted help with their requests from visiting cultivators, in exchange for some spirit stones or other resources. This was good for the legionaries who offered, because paying some money to complete a contract is better than paying the face that taking a contract and failing it would cost. Still, the Golden Devil's had countless vassals, so there was never any shortage of visiting cultivators either, so he would likely be overlooked there too.

There was one surefire way to get attention though. Spiros opened the cockpit and climbed inside, channeling his Qi into the chains to power the arrays. He marveled at the light gathering arrays that showed what the machine's eyes saw, displaying it on the wall of the cockpit. After going through a few small motions to check the handling after it's newest round of upgrades,.Spiros raised up the great door of the machine's armory and strode to the square with confidence, ignoring the jeering of his neighbors who had long harangued his parents. There he saw a gathering of auxiliaries. 2 groups from the Blade Duchies were screaming at each other as usual, while some axe wielding fellows laughed together and took bets on the former groups. Spiros also saw one man in overwrought robes emblazoned with koi and one poor bastard who had an apple insignia. It seemed the square was less crowded than usual, it seemed that Spiros was in luck.

Spiros took a seat, causing a resounding thud, and waited until a legoinaire in need arrived. He did not have to wait long, as one of his seniors entered the courtyard a mere 30 minutes later. He was clearly a veteran, his bronzed arms seemed to be more scar tissue than flesh, and one arm hung limply at his side.

"Alright, you lot, I can't find my doctor and I broke my arm punching out some bandit that tried something on my way here, so I need you lot to help me punch out some other bandits. I'll handle the leader but I hear he's just gotten a few mooks of his own, so what are you charging, I can tell there isn't a worthwhile fighter among you, so don't even try to price gouge me.." the veteran said.

The crowd immediately started talking over each other, starting with utterly absurd bids and working their way down to merely colossal rip offs.

"I'll do it for free."Spiros said, arrays carrying his voice above the din. The others fixed him with dirty looks for a moment, before returning to bickering about their own prices.

"Well I can't beat that price, can I? Haha, Say, can I get your name while these other layabouts decide how much they can scam me before I get fed up and leave?"

"It's Spiros Wan. It'll be memorable soon enough." Spiros replied.

"Ah, that explains that big old thing you're in, I heard people talking shit about some guy named Wan on my way here, what, did your legion run out of requests or something?"

"I ask that you not say such things about my late father. I just completed basic training and no legion has bid on me yet, but once I show what I can do, I'm sure someone will acknowledge me." Spiros said, projecting confidence he did not feel.

"Ah, sorry, didn't know all that. Looks like the morons have stopped bickering, so go get yourself a hot meal and a full waterskin, we leave at noon. Good luck, rookie." Iason sent him off with a clap on the back that set the machine into motion.
Spiros headed away with a start. He wouldn't ignore advice forom such a senior, nor would he endanger his first mission for such a dumb reason as forgetting to eat or drink.

A.N. as you can see, Spiros's idea of his parents is rather different from how they actually were.

I would like an LST and to enter Qiguai realm please.

Qinglong Shu 24 - Draconic Puberty

Qinglong Shu 24 - Draconic Puberty

Baihu Xiu lowered herself, her forehead pressing against the dirt that made up the village's ground. The many mortals and even some cultivators that returned for a break from the Golden Devil lands, did the same, paying respect to their new visitor.

"Elder Lang, it is an honor to have you here."

The Elder raised his hand, chuckling a bit. It was always nice to have his ego stroked like this. But he wasn't so vain as to extend these procedures more than necessary. After all, Shu's loved ones deserved better. Thus, he cleared his throat.

"Rise and be at ease"

They all rose immediately. Many children stared at the wizened cultivator with stars in their eyes. Most parents and elderly were sweating nervously, subtly trying to get out of the way. The few cultivators of the clan immediately walked off before mediating together. As if they were afraid that this was a surprise test for them. Snorting to himself, Elder Lang turned to the matriarch of the village, lowering his head for a moment.

"The pleasure is all mine, Miss Baihu." He faced her soft smile as he let out a sigh, shaking his head. "Alas, I wish it was under better circumsta-."

"FUUUUUUCK!"

A loud crash that rumbled the very earth. Even Elder Lang flinched at the sudden burst of Qi that was released by that scream. He looked around. While many others whimpered and covered their ears…they didn't seem surprised. Xiu took a deep breath, her hands still folded in front of her before she nodded slowly with her smile having turned more frail.

"Y-Yes…"

"How long has she been like that?" He asked, raising an eyebrow at the rolling and crashing, the house seemingly jumping a few times almost as growls and screams sounded of it. Xiu sighed, shaking her head, worry marring her face as she glanced at the building.

"Everything seemed normal. As normal as a return from the Qiguai Secret Realm could be. She was different in some ways, like those scales or how her eyes glowed more than usual. Other than that however? She was as cheerful as ever."

"And then a few days later…?"

"She just suddenly started to have-"

The crashing suddenly ceased. Then a weird noise began to sound. Elder Lang picked up the noise with ease and what he heard cause him to raise an eyebrow.

"Waaaahh…uhhh…"

He turned his head towards Xiu, who nodded slowly, lips thin.

"-mood swings."

"I notice." He ran his hand through his hair, eyes closed as a migraine began to build up. "Well, I've been wondering why she hasn't returned to Golden Devil grounds yet. At least Legate Myia and her legion aren't back yet. Heavens know what they would do if they found Shu in such a state."

The matriarch narrowed her eyes at those words.

"With comments like these, I become more and more worried about Shu's current occupation."

"You and me both," Elder Lang muttered to himself. Rolling his shoulders, he gave her a determined nod. "No rest for the wicked."

Thus, the two approached the door, the crying growing louder as they stepped closer. Xiu carefully raised her knuckle and knocked on the door, leaning against it a bit.

"Shu? It's me."

Once more, Qi exploded out of the room. The crying immediately stopped and instead a hysteric growl pushed against them.

"Fuck off, hag! You deaf or what?! I said nobody comes in here, you shitter!"

Elder Lang slowly turned to Xiu, horrified at what he heard. Credit to where its due, the widow didn't seem to mind at all. She shrugged it off and stepped to the side, handing over the lead role to the Golden Devil. Said old man cleared his throat and stepped forward.

"Now that's just rude. But I'm sure you do not mean it," he calmly said. Immediately, the mood swung once more, fear replacing anger.

"E-E-E-Elder Lang?!" And just as quickly, sadness replaced fear. Sobbing and sniffing sounded from the room. "Don't come in, I'm, hicc, hideous!"

Alright, that was enough. Putting a hand on the handle, he tore the door open. Not literally, he had more control than that. Stepping inside, his eyes went wide, analyzing the situation immediately. Despite hiding herself in layers of blankets, he could see the scales covering her tear stained cheeks. Part of him wondered how her blankets were alright, considering the rest of the room looked like an absolute mess to say the least. Beds thrown over, broken in half, walls cracked so much he wondered how the building didn't collapse yet. Then he saw her eyes. As usual, they were glowing azure and were inhuman whenever she got angry. However, something was different. Her eyes became blank, as if she got lost in thought of something. Then there was the feeling of being…dissected. Broken down. He only once felt that way, when one of the great leaders of the Golden Clan, Destasia, made her rounds once.

His thoughts were interrupted when she hissed, covering her forehead. Then she shot up, hunched over like a beast as she barred her teeth at the Elder.

"I fucking said don't come in here you piece of shit! Why is no one listening to a damn word I'm saying?!"

She was transforming, Lang thought with shock. Her fingernails grew, slowly turning into claws. Her scales became more profound, harder, more azure. Not to mention her teeth and her mouth. So many questions entered his mind, what changes were brought forth within this girl. But first, he had to get her to regain her composure. Just as it seemed like Shu was actually going to leap at him, he exhaled. With that exhale, pressure beyond pressure pressed down on Shu, his own Qi, his Core, bearing down on her. Like a giant gently patting a mouse, the girl went down on her knees in an instance, eyes wide as her body shivered, sweated nervously. Like prey under the eyes of a predator, Elder Lang looked down at her, expression stern.

"Now. Take a deep, long breath. In. And out."

She did so, heeding his order without paying much attention. By doing so, her body slowly morphed back to normal. As normal as it could be now, given her scales anyway. Then, light returned to her eyes, as if she just woke up. She clenched them shut immediately, letting out a shivering breath. Then she lowered her head, a sniff escaping her.

"A-Apologies. To…everyone."

"What is going on, Shu? We're worried." Xiu ruffled her hair gently.

"Also why are your eyes closed shut now?" Lang asked, pointing out how she kept them shut even when she raised her head, smiling a frail smile at her sister figure. Shu flinched before scratching the back of her head.

"Err…long story."

"We have time," Elder Lang said calmly.

"Okay…where to begin."

And then she began her tale. It was abbreviated of course. Still, the expressions of Xiu and Lang grew more and more incredulous, once they realized what the theme of her story was. It was a common enough story that everyone knew it. And yet, Shu acted casual about it all, quickly being done with it as she recounted the events.

"Aaaand that's about it?"

Xiu shook her head slowly, disbelief, but also youthful curiosity and glee in her eyes.

"Shu, you actually met the Will of an Azure Dragon? You replicated the Rise Up The Waterfall?"

"Yeah." Any pride the girl felt vanished as she let out a long suffering sigh. "And ever since then, I just get…easily angry. Among other things."

Lang sent the matriarch a pointed look, just as she opened her mouth. She closed it again before clearing her throat and nodded in agreement. They could analyze everything she has been through in the Secret Realm later. For now, they had to address the issues she has been having now.

"What else bothers you?"

Shu blushed, looking away despite her closed eyes. Her voice was barely a whisper when she responded.

"...My tattoo is ruined. The scales mess up the entire composition…colors are weird too…"

Lang blinked. Well that was weirdly mundane to be worried about. Then again, he didn't have any such attachments to get a tattoo for. Xiu seemed to relate in his stead however and patted Shu on the shoulder.

"We can handle that. Worst case, I have to get outside help." The Baihu giggled, covering her mouth. "Honestly, I'm looking forward to it. An artistic challenge."

"Mmm." Shu nodded meekly before running her hand through her hair. "And…My entire system is out of wacc I guess? Like my elements feel…off. They used to be all the same, so to say, but now it's…hmmm…!"

Her features shifted as energy and anger build up. Lang did the equivalent of a cheek poke with his presence, causing Shu to flinch a bit.

"Calm." He pointed at her face. "What about your eyes?"

Shu smacked her lips. Then she opened them for a moment, revealing their exotic majesty to them once more.

"...I'm seeing more. T-Too much if I have them open for too long. It's like information itself invades my mind through those eyes." She winced, closing them shut again. "I can't turn them off."
Lang wondered what she was seeing exactly. The colors of Qi themselves? The deeper Dao of Lang? Many questions that would need answers for the future. For now, he let the room process what they have heard. He crossed his arms and leaned back, humming in thought.

"These are worrying things. I suppose the Heavens desire to balance out your newfound powers."

"Tch. I learn how to control gravity and those little-"

"Shu." He blinked after reprimanding her.

"Gravity?" Xiu asked. Shu blinked back before realization dawned on her face.

"Oh yeah, skipped it in my retelling. Whoops." She looked outside the window, eyes open for a moment." I can do this now."

She didn't raise an arm. Or stand up. By all means, she only tapped her finger once on the ground. Yet with that movement, a big boulder suddenly levitated, the children on it squealing in surprise before laughing at the mysterious event. Shu smiled as well, before closing her eyes. The boulder dropped down, earning more surprised noises. Lang's long age served him well to not just openly gape at her. Xiu had no such issues, but she covered her mouth up with her own palm.

Defying the Laws of Gravity. As if she was Destasia herself. It was on a much, much smaller scale. However, such a technique was reserved for Foundation Establishment at the earliest. At least with such ease and mastery she seemed to showcase, sweat or no sweat. It may be more expensive on her resources, but that she could do this at all…Not noticing their awe at all, Shu tapped her chin, pondering over what else she forgot. Then she snapped her finger, a bit of giddiness entering her voice.

"Also got something called the Lawless Winds. It's basically a chaotic singularity of gravity going all over the place."

An ace in the hole. One that wouldn't affect her as much if she used such a technique on the area around herself. Even those of higher Cultivation would have a hard time navigating and acting in such a situation. While Lang realized that this girl was a monster, a Good Seed among Good Seeds, her ability to punch up her weight class was…truly fearsome. Shaking his head and burying his pride for her, at least for now, he pointed at her with a frown, realizing she didn't point out one obvious thing.

"Did you notice that you are…changing form each time you get angry?"

Shu's eyes opened for a moment, shock in them. Then she hissed, closing them again before shaking her head in irritation.

"Not really. But it'd make sense." She 'glanced' to the side, muttering under her breath. "As if this whole transformation deal wasn't costly enough…"

Xiu and Lang nodded in understanding, the same thought going through their minds. Azure Dragons represent the emotion of Wrath the most after all-

They both did a double take. Shu still sat there, mumbling incoherent words by now. They shared a look, checking if the other heard what she said. Both nodded. Then they snapped their heads back at the girl. At some point, she noticed the looks she was receiving. Tilting her head in innocent confusion, she then let out an 'oh' sound, realizing what they were staring at her for. She let out a sheepish laugh, scratching her right cheek.

"Oh yeah, I can transform into an Azure Dragon." She paused before pointing at herself. "Didn't I say that?"

"You said you overcame the True Scale and its memories," Xiu said, exasperation and awe at the same time in her voice.

"Aaaand gained the ability to turn into a giant fuck off dragon." Shu cleared her throat, a blush forming on her scaled skin. "Err, there you have it. I can transform. Sorta."

"Sorta?" Lang asked in an incredulous tone. "Shu, that is a big deal."

"It's a fraction of a fraction of a second." Shu shrugged helplessly before lowering her head. "Hah, better off figuring out how to do partial transformations."

Sometimes he wanted to beat those skewed self perception of hers out of her. With a calming breath, he massaged his right temple. A fraction of a fraction of a second of being a legendary Azure Dragon. Short as the duration was, the mere presence of such a form could stop a Foundation Establishment enemy cold. Maybe kill one if she got in a lucky shot. Perhaps she could even survive Core Formation for longer than an instance now. Excitement filled his heart. So many new things, new gifts she brought with her. Standing up to his feet, he nodded at his ward.

"I am glad, Shu."

"R-Really?" She asked, shock in her voice.

"Why, yes. I was afraid I would have nothing left to help you with. But now we have something to work on." He reached out with his hand. "Let us begin."

Shu didn't hesitate accepting it, dragging herself up to her feet, any anger or sadness forgotten at the prospect of learning more, understanding more about herself.

"Yes, Elder!"

///

"Ooooh!"

Xiu chuckled as she saw Shu raise her gift up in the air, her eyes sparkling as she behold it. It was a simple white cloth, with a red pattern to decorate it. Perfect to cover her eyes with. That way, she wouldn't accidentally open her eyes by accident and hurt herself in the long run. Out in the desert, with the sand hitting her skin occasionally, the widow stepped forward.

"I presume you like it?"

"Of course I do!" Shu wraped her hands around her big sister, nuzzling her head against her chest. Then she looked up with a sheepish grin. "Not that I can appreciate it that often, but y'know."

Ah, so cute. Even when she was older than some mortal uncles in the village by now. It was a fortunate thing she was so small, else she wouldn't get to pat her like this. They both shared a girlish giggle before turning around, at the massive landscape Elder Lang just finished up. It was akin to a maze, made of the materials found by nature. Rocks, walls of sand, even some Spirit Beats the Elder threw in for good measure. Standing on the highest point of his self made tower, he took a whiff from his pipe before pointing down at Shu.

"As you probably suspected, we shall train your other senses up to replace the need for sight. Then, if you need it in the future, remove the blindfold and unleash the full might of your perception."

Shu grinned, making a knot at the back of her head. Her eyes were completely covered now as she clapped her hands together in excitement.

"Like training weights! Cool!"

"Yes, just like them." Xiu was already moving around the area on his cue. "I have rearranged the area for you. Navigate through it and reach Miss Baihu."

"Easy, peasy!" Shu shouted, the sounds of cheeks being slapped sounding in the area. Then she moved in, before Xiu was even in position. However, her excitement and joy was fleeting as it showed itself why the human being had five senses instead of just four. Or rather, how difficult it was to compensate for a missing one. The matriarch of the village winced when she heard a loud crash, the sound of Shu running face first into a wall.

"Crap!"

She was only halfway when the Qinglong spat out copious amounts of sand, having stumbled over a conveniently placed rock.

"Damn it!"

When Xiu finally arrived at the other end of the maze, she grimaced when she heard flesh being bitten and a yell of pain escaping. Seemed like a nasty sandworm got a bite it. It wouldn't do much damage but…well, the fact it touched Shu at all must have been infuriating. One loud squish sound later and Xiu saw the worm carcass, half of its living size, flung into the air.

"Who put that fucker there?!"

A loud clang noise sounds, followed by a hiss and then a roar. She must have stubbed her toe against a block of iron hidden in the sand.

"You motherfu-" A burst of Qi flared up, pressing down on Shu. She stumbled, hitting her forehead against a wall, cracking it. Whimpering, she lowered her head. "S-sorry!"

It would not be a last time she would curse. Nor the last time she would have to go through a maze, even after hours of navigating it and reaching Xiu at last, looking dirty and battered and mentally exhausted if not physically.

She shared a look with the Elder after he threw her back to the beginning and rearranged the area. Yes, this was going to take a while. But Xiu had faith that she could figure it out, to move and one day even fight blind.

///

Shu finished her forms with a final backflip, a wheel of fire following her heel. Landing on her feet with her arms spread out, she pressed her lips together. After a moment of silence, she stood up straight and let out a sigh of frustration, hands on her hips. Nodding a few times she turned to Lang and Xiu with a deep frown.

"Yup, definitely out of wacc."

She saw Xiu raise an eyebrow at that.

"Shu, with all due respect, I'm not seeing any difference. They seem as equally powerful as ever."

Elder Lang on the other hand, being an active cultivator compared to the retired one that was her Big Sis, shook his head slowly, scratching his beard with a thoughtful look.

"It is subtle, but I believe it's there."

Subtle? Shu couldn't help but scoff as she threw up her hands in the air.

"Oh c'mon! It's obvious!" She opened her palms, as if presenting two things to them. "Wood Qi control is up to one twenty percent! Meanwhile, all the rest is down to like sixty!"

Before, everything was perfectly balanced, as all things should have been! But now she literally felt her blood reaching out for Wood Qi basically out of reflex, while almost seeming to shun the other elements. Well, there was Gravity as well, heeding her call easier like Wood, but that one didn't count. It wasn't exactly part of her Formless Style, that fluidly moved from one strategy to the next as the situation called for. Couldn't exactly do that when she had to actually put more brain cells on activating certain techniques now. THe delay would be barely a few seconds at worst, but in a fight, every moment counted.

Amidst her internal frustration, her dragonic features growing, not so much to earn a spiritual slap over her head, she didn't notice Elder Lang and Big Sis Xiu exchanging some quiet words among each other.

"Wasn't it all at eighty before, according to her?" Xiu asked quietly, causing the Elder to nod with a somewhat amused expression.

"Give or take. Wood Qi was her preference, but she had mastery of them all."

"Must be hard not being good at everything."

They both shared a small laugh as Shu simmered. Then the Elder cleared his throat and gestured towards her. At least she thought he did so. Kinda hard to feel the small air displacement of his hand moving when it's so damn windy out here in the desert.

"Please explain what you feel when using your Qi."

Shu furrowed her forehead. How to explain it…Sucking in air through her teeth, she tilted her head up, scratching her scales underneath her blindfold a bit.

"It's like everything but Wood is…weighted down. Sluggish. Harder to mold. The other elements aren't weaker per se, but doing techniques with them feels like instead of taking from water, it's taking from tar."

"Are there any exceptions?" Xiu asked, curiosity filling her voice.

"The Gravity techniques." She shook her head. "It's like my Azure Blood is rebelling against using anything but Wood. It's only because I have so much experience beforehand that I'm not completely hopeless with those other Qi elements…" She shrugged, trying to see the positive despite those annoying downsides. "Well, upsides. Wood Qi is as easy to mold as breathing now."

She wasn't going to whine that being a goddamn Azure Dragon wasn't entirely unblemished of any faults. Honestly part of her thought it made this whole deal more legit. If there were no downsides, she'd assume that the Heavens themselves were just setting up her downfall in the long run. But visible issues right off the bat? That made her heart feel more at ease. Her ears twitched, perking up as she heard Elder Lang take a deep breath.

"Well, there is no clean solution for this. All we can do is hammer in skill even more than we already did with those other elements, leaving Gravity and Wood more to your intuition."

A part of her was disappointed, but the words were sound. If the technique was lacking, she just had to use the good ol' bruteforce method.

"Alright!" She smirked, taking a step forward. "Let's g-Wah!"

Her foot got caught on fucking something again. Surprised by that hindrance, she couldn't reverse gravity or whatever in time and ate a face full of sand as she landed down. Muffled growling escaped her. Why was there so much random shit in this massive excuse of a cat toilet?!

"Three hours. A new record."

"I'll become a bat one of these days, damnit!"

///

Nervously flexing her fingers, Shu took a deep breath. Before, the idea excited her. But now, being here, so far away from civilization, it truly hit her what she was about to do. Intentionally do.

"A-Are you sure this is far away enough?" She asked. Elder Lang let out a grunt in response.

"As far as we can be. Now then. Please transform."

She gulped. Right. Right. She could trust him. If they were too close to innocent people, he'd tell her. So, just go. Just go. Just…Shu stood there, silently as she biting on her lip. Then she turned her head once more, face at where she assumed Xiu was.

"Big Sis, do you want-"

"Shu, you are about to transform into an actual Azure Dragon. Even if I only see an instance of it, it'd be worth it."

No objection from there. The giddiness barely hidden beneath manners made Shu flinch. No more stalling then. She took a deep breath and exhaled out slowly.

"Right. Okay…Here goes nothing…!"

She tried to replicate the sensation she felt, when she finally fully absorbed that stupid True Scale. The level of rage she felt, unknown to her, depths she never realized she had. The image of Big Bro being cut into pieces. The phantom of how she thought Ming looked like. Her soul was set ablaze with a blue flame. And thus her form changed, exploded in size.

Just as quick as it happened, before she could even properly process her new form, she was back in human form. Breathing heavily, sweating as if she was fighting for days, she collapsed immediately, face first into solid ground. She weakly blinked, then gaped. With her blindfold having flown off somewhere, she could freely see what happened.

The sand was gone. All of it. Some (sandearthparticlesdust) slowly seeped back into the hole she created, some fell down like rain, but most sand corns were gone from the area. Holy crap, how hard did she explode when transforming?! Or was it how fast she changed from a small human to a massive dragon?! Her eyes widened and she tried to get up, failing to do so however. Was Big Sis alright?!

Relief filled her heart when she(baihutigerfoundationmetal) and Elder Lang(corebronzecenturiesteacher) came down the hole. The former had a hand on her chest, ShuÄs blindfold in hand trying to be calm. Lang on the other hand looked around with an analyzing eye. She hissed, as the information invaded her mind once more. The more vivid colors of the air, the very Qi of existence and the elements visible to her. Red, blue, green, yellow and so on. Then there were the impressions of numbers, of how much was where. The worst however were people. They were so complex, so filled with depth…and her eyes forcefully tried to bring all those details out. Age, injuries, emotions, Dao. She couldn't process all of it, naturally. Too fast and mostly static, it was like knives being sharpened on her very brain. She closed her eyes, finding relief (shame) in darkness (ignorance) and let out a groan.

"I can't move."

"Amazing…" Xiu whispered before she knelt down next to Shu, binding her eyes with the blindfold once more. Lang hummed thoughtfully as Shu was raised, helped with seating herself in the hole she made.

"Indeed. However, it is way weaker than an actual Azure Dragon, as far as I am aware."

Shu slowly nodded. She figured. The Will was way more powerful than her. No way Qi Condensation like her could bring forth the full might of her blood. Not without exploding violently. In a permanent way. She grimaced at the imagination as she tried to get her breath steady again. Moving on, Elder Lang took a deep breath from his pipe, mulling over the next course of action.

"This is going to take quite a while. After all, we must see what other techniques you have available in this form, as well as a more efficient one."

Right, right. With that in mind, the torture began. Not as bad as the Will beating her up and kicking her off the top of the mountain repeatedly. But the migraines, the ringing of her ears, the sheer disorientation after each transformation was…bad. Sometimes she couldn't pull out the techniques she knew by blood, too slow to use them after transformation. But the few times she did so? Big kaboom booms. Fire. Lightning. Wind. Three elements, each capable of smashing an area large enough to contain an army. It took literal hours to get to that point, for Shu has emptied out her tank with each transformation, with each act of nature's fury. Not only that, she could use only one on any meaningful level comparable to the dragon form she had. Then there was flying. Not defying gravity by manipulating it, but flat out flying. It was only for sixty seconds…but she felt like the most free entity in the world. The way the air sang in her ears, brushed against her skin, now that she wasn't busy screaming her head off inside the claw of a dragon. Then the sight. In her dragon form, there was no pain from seeing. She forgot most details, but during that duration she just…knew. And it was wonderful.

Right until she fell flat on her face once more. Xiu was at her side in an instance, wrapping the blindfold around her once more. Patting and rubbing her back, her Big Sis smacked her lips with worry.

"Are you alright, Shu?"

"Tired. Like always. But good to go," Shu groaned out. After a good breather, Elder Lang came just in time, a satisfied hum escaping him.

"Well, we got a good handle of your maximum power. Now, we must find a good middle ground."

"Partial Transformation?" Shu asked out loud, voicing out her suspicion what he meant. She felt him nod and Shu nodded as well. That made sense. To extend her time, she had to reduce her power. It would still be a great ace to be pulled out for when it was needed. Weaker, but still making her more powerful. It was easier said than done though, something Lang agreed to.

"To have such control, anger is counterproductive. Alas, your anger is the trigger for the transformation to begin with. So, we have to have you reach some enlightenment." He clapped his hands together as Shu froze at the last word. "You must learn the concept of Tranquil Fury. Anger triggers your transformation. The more angry you become, the more you lose yourself to your blood and thus it changes you."

She licked her lips, both in worry and in anticipation. Enlightenment. He made it sound so easy.

"Is that an actual thing? Tranquil Fury?" She asked, uncertainty in her voice. Elder Lang didn't hesitate to respond, putting his very own Qi behind his words.

"Yes. Prepare yourself, Qinglong Shu. For you must wage war upon yourself with every moment of your existence. From there, we can figure out how to maintain the optimal level, once you have a feel for it."

Shu felt a hand squeeze hers. She squeezed Xiu's right back before nodding with a deep breath. She couldn't help but giggle. It was yet another hurdle she had to get a handle on. So many things. it should have frustrated her. However… So many lessons to learn, so many things to master. Hah, it was like Shu never left! With that in mind she exhaled, triggering the mental image of Ming, and tried her best to guide the transformation slash anger percentage to half instead of going full throttle.
