New Good Seed and Omake Rule Updates
Good Seed and Omake Spreadsheet Rules:

Firstly, if you have questions about Good Seeds and the like please read here. If that doesn't answer your question please ping me in thread, or on Discord.

If you write a new Good Seed, or write an omake, please update the spreadsheet if you have access.

If you do not have access, please ping a collaborator (Swordomatic, Alectai, Quest, TehChron, Insane-Not-Crazy, Humbaba, ReaderOfFate, Kaboomatic, no., BungieONI) letting them know what you want and they will update the spreadsheet here. To gain access, you will need a gmail account of some kind. Throwaway emails are fine (I'm using one for the spreadsheet), but to gain access it's as simple as sending me either your email via PM, via DM in Discord, or just in Discord's #spreadsheet-requests channel.

This is mandatory. If a Good Seed does not record their omake by pinging collabs (or just requesting access and editing things themselves - this is the preferred option), I won't give out awards. If a new Good Seed is not recorded here, they won't advance. By doing this it makes the whole thing manageable for me - it's gotten pretty unwieldy!

Omake Writer Instructions:

There are four fields you need to fill out.

Omake Link, which is just a link to your first omake for the turn. This makes it easier for me to read them as I do the update - without this it's tough to know off the bat which omake were written this turn, and to properly

Requested Bonus, which is your requested bonus for your omake. You can leave it up to me if you like. You can see more info in the Good Seed infopost here.

Cultivation Aims. For those following unorthodox paths - higher than 9th Heavenstage or later than 7th Dao Pillar paths. Please put in what you are aiming for before you break through. I have left it as 'default'. If you do not edit it, I'll go with that.

Turn Notes - Do you want to do something specific? Enter a Secret Realm? Help the Clan out in some way? If you have something specific you want to accomplish on this turn, put it in turn notes so I can adjust your Fate around it.

All other fields are for QM use to record character information to properly run the flow of the game.

If we didn't have a Mystikos, we'd basically be suffering all penalties at once. As is, it's only two turns for two out of five targets. So who don't we need to know about for the next two turns? I'd say the least vital are

[ ] She is blinded to the War in the Plains
[ ] She is blinded to the moves of the Jingshen Clan

The first is obvious - none of those powers have any ability to threaten us over the next two turns and all the others do.

For the Jingshen clan - we just cost them a large amount of resources, and we know they are going for a long term saving for victory plan. Therefore, the short term risk to us from them is low. They may covertly support the cannibals to humble us, but are least likely to act outright. The devil bees can finish their civil war at any time, so we need info on them to get forwarning when raids might resume.

Also, I am still against spending an action on fortifications compared to military readiness when it comes to next turn. We've seen from the interlude that blood path users will flow around fortifications - have better rapid response units to meet them on the field will be more effective than better forts to hide behind. Our forts were only so effective against the devil bees because they were being directly paid to destroy forts - which won't be the case against blood cannibals.

This is not how it works. Our clan is so good at repelling Blood Path because we are defensive specialists who can fortify so well, and its what the SPS has been trying to do but can't because of its expense. If they flow around our forts where most of the mortals are, then they don't have much to eat. It makes it difficult for them to get going and means they actually have to fight pitched battles, which they lose against us due to our own advantages.

The problem remains the same as always. Without either superior defensive positions that can be independently held or an ability to force the enemy into a decisive battle, we are grasping at water. If we raise sufficient forces to fight and win, we may win a battle, but they flow around us and into mortal cities. If we defend those under our care, we are slowly ground down.
From the interlude where it mentions a desire for superior defensive positions that can be independently held. The Blood Path flows around sufficient forces to fight and win, not fortifications.

They could and will flow around fortifications, but if the bulk of the population is in there, there's no fuel outside so it doesn't matter. Because the Blood Path can just invade and leave people there to eat and grow strong if the people are in reach. If they aren't because they're bottled up in hard targets, they starve.

Rapid response forces is what SPS is trying to do and it isn't working and fortifying towns in the backline is what we've been brought in for.

Given that we're going to want to fortify against the Cannibals next turn in order to be ready for war come turn 8, I think administrative wise we have to take Borrowing Against Tomorrow.

Not sure what to do with Xie as of yet, beyond agreeing that the Great Battlefield isn't exactly relevant right now. It is relevant in the near future but the next two turns, probably not.

Destasia is a bit tricky. We could suffer a minor malus to recruitment, or a loss on raw numbers. And against the cannibals I'm not sure which I'd like to go for. Honestly a minor malus is probably better since we can pad that out with numbers a bit and those numbers can carry over for the trials.

Got to say I think Paying Today is a really bad idea, because we need bulk amounts of cash in order to use the Fortify action on the Burnished Crags and Uncast Molds, i.e use our natural and effective clan tactic against the Cannibals. If we shell out -6 next turn I expect we won't have the cash to do Fortify on turn 7 which means we're open on turn 8 and our military prep is worth a lot less. (It's not worthless to be clear, its just not playing to our strengths)

E: We haven't fortified in the Cannibal direction, the action hasn't been taken there.
As far as I understand it, we don't have strong defenses against the Cannibals, because we haven't taken the Fortify action in the Uncast Molds or Burnished Crags. I went back and checked and all we've done so far is increase colonization there and used Fortify in the direction of the Devil Bees.

Really, we haven't fortified? I could have sworn....

Aha!
[ ] Direct Rule - More expenditure, more investment. Significant short-term costs, but you will settle Clan cultivators into these regions, building new Arrays for defense and to help mortal populations. Grows the Clan core military strength significantly, and hardens the territory against invasion. In the long run, is likely to do the most in weakening the Cannibal Sect. Expensive, though, and will show the least monetary return. Adds military strength and defensibility, as well as large Mortal Population increase. Increases Clan population directly, as well as Clan power relative to vassals. Costs wealth. Income-neutral.
Our direct rule option was stated to add military strength and defensibility, which is what I remembered! So we should be reasonably fortified in that area already. We just haven't added to that. Plus we also have the Golden Eye array to help guide our shattering glass array, which means they'll take even more damage.

Actually, on further review the generic [] Fortify action is actually a focus and has no wealth cost, so we should be ok there. As long as we pick it.

The big issue reason I was pushing for pay today was that our wealth generation rate is down to a trickle anyway. Again, all these calculations ignore the the strength purity deal as I don't have the numbers for it.

Last turn we had 11 wealth to begin and a generation rate of 10. We spent 5 last turn and put a cost on this turn with the hiring. That means we will have (11-5+10-5) 11 wealth at the start of turn 7 before the strength purity deal or this councillor cost. If we choose to pay the cost now that will add an additional -6, taking us down to 5 wealth before spending (+ Strength purity infusion). Not a great position, but one that we can still work with since the rebuilding the Golden Eye only cost 7 wealth. We then move back into a positive generation (+3 and strength purity) the turn after that, increasing to EDIT: (originally had +8 but I forgot we'd get rid of the -2 as well) +10 per turn after that once we've paid off the debt and we get rid of the hired core formations.

If we go with the p[ borrowing option, we instead run at 8 wealth at the beginning of turn 7, but our income is only at +1 per turn, going to a fairly low +4 once we get rid of the hired core formations.

Assuming we can avoid any military disaster, this also means our wealth rapidly expands again if we can weather the storm, giving us a lot more options. It also means we'll feel it less if our income reduces as we replace casualties, since a large chunk of our current income is savings from not paying all the fallen.

That's odd. It did cost wealth the one time we did it.

[ ] Fortifying (Write-in territory, ally or vassal) - Spend Clan wealth and soldiers to build new fortifications against outside enemies. New Arrays, help train new cultivators in lesser Formations to defend their lands, and so on. Will also strengthen a vassal or ally if chosen, and increase relations with them. Increases defenses in the chosen territory, ally, or vassal. Costs Wealth.
From Year 40. But now a wealth cost isn't listed.

Little confused by your wording in the "if we go with the borrowing option" sentence since we are in turn 6 now, and we'd be buying stuff for turn 7 which is I think what you mean?

Yeah I'm having trouble parsing what you're saying because the turn timings don't make sense. Actually after further rereading I managed to get it, nevermind!

Borrowing Against Tomorrow is a bad option. It chops our income down by -3 for 4 turns. That is a big problem.

The best option is Paying the Debt Today. Chops us once by -6, then the following turn by -2, but it fixes our issues within three turns.

Interest Forever is one of the better options mechanically (losing a permanent -1 to income), but it brings in that corruption problem, and is expensive to fix.

Antonius Emmanuel Eleanora 14 - [Yuan 5: Blood and Family]
No idea if this turned out well. I literally wrote it stream-of-conscious and am way too tired to read through it. Hopefully it turned out well.

[Yuan 5: Blood and Family]

Even after Yixuan Shan was gone, it was some time until Antonius was able to leave Yuan. Though their gamble in coming to Yuan had paid off, many of the legionnaires that they came with were still looking for their own prizes. As the rest of the camp prepared for their final stretch of time there, Antonius found most of his time being spent in training.

His mother had just reached Foundation Establishment and needed to to get used to her newfound strength and speed. With so many years of experience behind her, she had things much easier than he did. Antonius had jumped from the first heavenstage to the tenth and he had only just learnt how to fight.

Trying to get used to his new abilities while trying to incorporate Yixuan Shan's treasures was really hard. Right from the start, he put aside the Sand-Spitting Marble and the Fish-bone Mourning Flute. Those would take time to master and that certainly wouldn't happen while they were still at Yuan.

Instead, he focused on combat skills and the use of what he had begun calling the Wave-summoning Silver Scale that allowed him to use Yixuan Shan's personal technique, albeit at a much reduced level of power.

Their training took place in the form of spars at a flat ground far enough from camp not to be a distraction but close enough to call for reinforcements in the case of enemies. His mother and father were always there but every now and then others joined them as well.

At this point, Antonius had spared against several legionnaires though only a few of them were specially memorable. He'd fought against Oriana from the 43rd legion who had long ago stopped him in front of their legion headquarters when he had hoped to join up. She was in the fifth heavenstage and it had been fun beating her - entirely because of that incident.

There was also Corvina Taurus from the 96th Legion. Primarily a diviner, Antonius had a feeling that Aunt Ariadne had put her up to it for whatever reason based on her smirk throughout the match. She wasn't any more skilled than he was and he won fairly easily with his greater speed and strength.

At one point, he'd also sparred with Aunt Ariadne herself. He'd tried to use wave-summoning to get the upper hand against her but she'd literally strung him up in the air and lectured him on everything he was doing wrong. She was in the Fifth Pillar so it made sense, but it was still slightly annoying to lose to her.

Most of his spars were against his parents. Against his father, he mostly lost at first. He was only at the seventh heaven-stage and was incredibly slow thanks to his personal arts but he was incredibly durable. He only had to catch Antonius in a lock once to render him unable to apply any force and escape.

However once he began to pick up on his father's tricks and how to counter them, the battles were more even. The difference just an increase in capabilities could make wasn''t enough to entirely invalidate skill. He wondered how powerful his battles against his father would go if Antonius completely mastered his fighting style?

Against his mother of course, he lost. She was faster than him and stronger than him by a large margin. She was mainly a ranged fighter so she didn't have a coherent style in close range but she seemed to have an endless bag of tricks. Antonius recognised locks from his father, what seemed like spear techniques from Aunt Ariadne and dozens of other tricks that he couldn't recognise.

Quite frankly, battle against her was a real lesson of humility. She was overwhelmingly powerful just like Aunt Ariadne was but she managed to hold back against him just enough that he felt like he might be able to fight her but then he'd be on the ground and realise that she had everything under control from the very start. Fighting against her taught him a lot, but for her own training she turned to other centurions.

The fights she had against Aunt Ariadne were incredible to watch but the fight that Antonius was looking forward to the most was against Auxiliary Nicomedes of the 96th Legion. He was recruited about half a decade ago and had very recently reached the first pillar himself. What Antonius was interested in however was his techniques.

Like Antonius' own new wave-summoning techniques, Nicomedes practiced the Flow-Freezing Art that allowed him to freeze and manipulate fluids as weapons. While they were quite different from his own arts - for one, Nicomedes had to rely on a storage ring to summon water that he would then freeze - there were still enough similarities that he might be able to learn a thing or two.

"Are you ready to begin?" The auxiliary called as he created a large ice shuriken in each hand. His mother drew three arrows and prepared her bow. They were close enough to reach the other within moments which was a disadvantage for his mother but Antonius had seen how little that slowed her down.

"I'm ready," She replied. As soon as the words left her mouth, the ice shuriken left Nicomedes' hand and flew in an arc towards her. Antonius turned to look towards him but he was gone and there was a clang as the shuriken were intercepted with arrows. He then realised that his mother had moved as well.

They were both incredibly fast. Enough that Antonius could only follow them because he sat at a distance with his father and could see the whole battleground at once. Nicomedes had tried to move closer to his mother and had conjured frozen swords. She had elected to move away by jumping into the air and firing more arrows at him in answer.

He deflected the arrows with his blades and then transformed them into disks. Both of them flew towards her position but from different directions. They seemed to be drawn towards her slightly and Antonius realised that they would cut her whether she dodged up or down.

Instead, she deflected them with arrows and fired an answering arrow back. The fight continued like this with both fighters trying to gain an advantage until the ground was littered with both arrows and weapons of ice.

Finally, his mother took to the air once more but rather than strike at her with weapons like before, Nicomedes just grinned and pointed a hand at her in an exaggerated motion. As if pushed up by his movement, Antonius saw all the ice scattered in the field suddenly take to the sky.

His eyes widened and he turned to his father who didn't seem concerned. Then his mother just curled up in a ball while still in the air to protect her face and body. Bronze threads from her clothing elongated and wrapped around her like a cocoon.

Then the ice shards hit her. Most of them deflected off of her but a few managed to penetrate her armor enough to cut. Antonius winced at every hit. Then the barrage ended and his mother pulled out of the cocoon, with cuts all over her but otherwise unhurt.

Then she disappeared and then reappeared right in front of Nicomedes. Having focused on the attack, the man had no time to conjure a weapon to defend himself. Even as he did, she held an arrow to his head and he froze. He smiled and dropped the half-conjured weapon, raising his hands in defeat.

As Antonius rushed to the battle site and his father came back behind him, he saw his mother gesture with the arrow and the smile turned into a smirk as the frozen weapons that were even now falling down, avoided the two fighters where it could have easily targeted them.

"Are you two okay?" He asked with concern as we arrived. Though he addressed the remark to both of them, his eyes were on his mother. This battle was much more real than the spars he was used to seeing.

"I'm fine, Antonius." Eleanora replied with a smile. "Just a few cuts and bruises."

"Don't worry kid," Nicomedes said, grinning at his mother. "I was sure to hold back."

His mother rolled her eyes. "Yes, we all held back." She said to him before smiling at Antonius in reassurance. He felt his father land next to them who then proceeded to look over both participants with a critical eye.

"Doesn't seem too bad," He noted finally. "I think you weren't trying to win, Nicodemes. Did I catch that wrong?"

"You aren't wrong," He agreed, sheepishly. "It's more that I didn't want to throw around too many ice weapons. I'll need to collect them again which is a pain."

Antonius looked across the field and looked at the large number of arrows and ice weapons in the field. "Do we have to pick all of that up?" He asked with a frown.

His mother sighed. "That's one issue with using projectiles." She said, looking around at the arrows that she used. Then she brightened as something occurred to her. "Still, I'm a centurion now. I can just get one of the newbies to pick them up for me in return for contribution points."

"I don't think I can order people around," Nicomedes pointed out. "One of the many restrictions of being an auxiliary."

Antonius' father coughed. "Well, we do have a newbie right here with who would be happy to help in exchange for a few pointers." His father glanced towards him with a smirk.

Though he very much didn't like the direction this conversation was going, Antonius nodded with a smile. "I don't mind helping out." He replied, while hoping his father was bluffing.

"I can just handle the collection for you, Nicomedes." His mother interrupted, holding a hand to her head. "All banter aside, it's been a late day and I think I'm figuring out the limits of my new stamina. Shall we just head back?"

Nicomedes smile and nods. "That's a great idea," He replies cheerfully. "Still, I caught that bit about advice. Was it related to your wave-summoning silver scale?"

Antonius nodded. "Yeah, that's what gives me access to my water abilities." He glanced at his mother in worry. He hadn't seen her tired very often.

His father walked over to his mother and placed a hand on her forehead and frowned. "I think you're burning up." He said with a frown. "We need to get you looked at."

"That sounds like such a useful technique," Nicomedes continued. "I have to carry liquids with me but you can just summon it out of thin air right? Plus there are healing aspects to it as well."

Antonius frowned at him and glanced at his mother. "Can we have this discussion some other time? I think my mom is in trouble."

His mother frowned and stepped forwards, then she stumbled. His father caught her and steadied her. She looked up with an intense expression of hate that caused Antonius to flinch. "You poisoned me," She growled at Nicomedes but she could do nothing but scowl.

Antonius' felt a chill go down his spine. His father picked up his mother and turned to rush towards the camp but a knife of ice pierced his feet and he stumbled with his mother. "No, no, none of that." Nicomedes said. "Can't have you raising the alarm now, can we? I guess it's about time to use this."

He held his hand forward to summon something from his storage ring, but Antonius didn't wait to see what it was. He summoned all of Yixuan Shan's power and struck Nicomedes with a wave of water.

"I'm Foundation Establishment," Nicomedes commented idly as he froze the very water that Antonius had summoned and caused it to crash to the ground. "There is literally nothing you can do to me. Your mother was the only threat here and I've neutralised her."

Antonius turned and ran. He grabbed his mother and father while trying to use water to push himself forward even faster. If he could just get close enough to the camp, they could get help-

The water that should have been pushing him forward froze and he crashed on the ground as a frozen weight kept him in place. His parents landed in front of him and all he could do was look at them in front of him. He struggled to get up but he couldn't. The ice on his back weighed so much...

A shiver ran through him as the very qi in the air froze and he couldn't sense any qi whether in the air or anyone in camp. He could still feel Nicomedes clearly as he walked over to him, taking his time. Somehow, he had managed to cut them off from outside qi and he could feel whatever caused it in his hand. It was an intense source of qi with a sense of ice and blood.

Antonius stopped struggling, realising that there was no way he could escape the way he was now. The man had to be actively keeping him on the ground somehow since the amount of ice on his back shouldn't weigh as much as seemed to. He couldn't use his wave-summoning carelessly either, since that seemed to just give him more ammunition.

He took a deep breath and checked on his parents. His mother was unconscious on the ground, turning paler by the second. His father was right next to her and with the ice dagger in his foot, he was quickly turning pale too. Antonius grimaced. So he'd have to find a way out somehow and quickly.

"What do you want from me?" Antonius called out, trying to keep his voice steady. He saw Nicomedes' boots stop in front of his face and then he knelt down. As he did, Antonius saw whatever he was holding in his hand. A frozen rose seemingly made of red ice - blood, he realised.

"Oh good, you are safe." The man answered instead. "This kind of thing isn't as fun when you are dead." He placed a hand on the ground, close enough to Antonius that could almost touch him. Then he summoned water from his storage ring and though Antonius tried to move, he couldn't stop the water from expanding into ice and freezing his hands in place.

"What are you doing to me?" Antonius asked as he struggled to move. The man ignored him as he reached toward Antonius' neck. A feeling of understanding filled him as he realised that the man was trying to reach for the wave-summoning silver fin that he kept around his neck.

Rather than wait for the man to reply or worse just take his only weapon, Antonius drew upon his qi and summoned the biggest wave he could - right between his neck and the man's outstretched arm.

Instinctively, Nicomedes froze the wave and now the only part of Antonius' body that wasn't frozen was his head. But the silver scale was trapped within the ice and Nicomedes would probably have to move the ice to get to it.

"You are going to keep doing that, aren't you?" Nicomedes asked with a frown, confirming Antonius' suspicions. He then just shrugged and created a frozen dagger. "Well, I guess I'm just going to have to kill you then."

Antonius blinked. "Wait, wait!" He called out and the man paused. "You want the scale right? If you leave us alone, you can just take it! Just let us go!"

Nicomedes frowned. "You realise that all of you are part of my prize, right?" He asked him. "The only reason I blew my cover was because I figured I could get you, your mother and your artifacts at the same time."

Antonius grimaced. He was blood path then. The aura of his artifact had put that in his mind already, but he was really hoping that it wasn't true. "Cover? Who are you working for?" He asked.

Nicomedes rolled his eyes. "The blood cannibals of course," He replied. "What other blood path group would join you?"

"I thought you guys couldn't eat our bodies," Antonius quickly pointed out. "Isn't our bronze terrible for you?"

"Your mother isn't of your clan," He said, shrugging. "And there were several poisons I've been hoping that might be able to break down your bronze blood. Who knows, I might make a breakthrough."

Antonius' eyes brightened. "Wait, wait!" He called out to him. "Let me join you. If you leave us alive, I'll join the blood path and you'll gain an ally!"

Nicomedes raised an eyebrow. "I was wondering if you had a plan or if you were just stalling for time," He replied, sighing. "If the best you could come up with was that…" He shook his head and raised the ice dagger.

"I have a reasoning you'll want to hear." Antonius replied. "Even if you decide to kill me, at least you'll be entertained. You want that, don't you?"

Nicomedes paused and considered. "Okay, sure. Let's hear it then." He finally said. "Let's see what you come up with."

"Well, it's simple. You see..." As he spoke, Antonius summoned a wave of water and aimed it straight at the frozen rose in his hand. At this distance, he might just be able to hit it and remove the barrier that kept the camp from sensing their qi.

It froze in the air and then was casually pushed aside by Nicomedes. Before Antonius could react any more, he sent the frozen dagger in his hand straight towards Antonius and nicked his head. Immediately, a strong sense of weakness spread throughout him.

"I'll admit, I didn't think you could use that scale while your arms were bound but did you really think I would have stepped near you if I wasn't confident in my chances to escape?" He heard Nicomedes say as his vision blurred. "Hello? Hello? Hmm. I thought someone at tenth heavenstage would last longer. Note to self-"

Then his hearing stopped working and he felt himself drift into darkness. It wasn't painful really. It just felt like this cloud of weariness that crushed you so completely that you might even forget to breathe.

Antonius could see how this poison could work on his mother.

Poison?

Wait.

No.

No.

I need to wake up.

No.

N-

….
….

….

….

….

No.

Power surged within Antonius and it grew and grew and grew. In a moment, he was as strong as he was in the morning fresh before any spars. Then he grew past his mother's power and then he surged so high that even Alcaeus the Strong seemed to be weak before him.

Then he turned his focus outwards, feeling the ice spread throughout the field with poisons flowing inside of them and drops of water that flowed with the wind. He could feel the flow of blood within his mother and father. He could feel how the poison inside them damaged them, making them weaker and easier to digest.

He could feel the blood struggle the same way within his own body and how his bloodline tried to break it down futilely. Just outside, Nicomedes had shattered the ice around him and even now reached towards his neck to grab the scale for his own. Still, he seemed frozen as the moment moved on.

Antonius could feel the flow of his blood too. As it flowed through a cursed and twisted body unable to draw power from anything other than the blood of other humans. He could sense the poison within him as well, but his body was adapted to it and resisted the poison effortlessly.

Perhaps, he could replicate that into his parent's bodies-

Antonius, my power is already fading as I stretch the moment. I only have a single action. It needs to be enough to save you and summon aid. That action will not truly save their lives.

Yixuan Shan's voice flowed through his mind and he reluctantly focused his mind. There was the barrier that Nicomedes had set up that Antonius was certain would be enough to draw others to his aid, especially if he could do so with a display of power.

That will do nicely.

Yixuan Shan drew upon his power and summoned a spout of water infused with incredible healing capabilities. He felt Nicomedes react to it but there was nothing he could do. For a second, a healing technique worthy of a Nascent Soul filled up the barrier and it popped like a bubble.
For a second his senses expanded.

He felt the water fall and get absorbed by his body, rapidly healing to a state where he could if not move then at least survive.

He felt Nicomedes run away from the power, deciding that what he might gain there wasn't worth the risk of facing the source of the power and whoever it might attract.

Far away in the camp, he felt the powerful presence of Legate Alcaeus as he drew upon all of his famous strength to reach their training ground as soon as he could.

Then the awareness shrunk to his body and he felt his mind fading into unconsciousness.

I had hoped to watch over you longer, but so soon I must depart. Live well Antonius and this time truly - goodbye.

When Antonius next awoke, his body ached all over and he felt like he barely had the energy to stand. Moving around, he realised that he was on a bed somewhere but that was strange. Where would they find a bed in Yuan-

His eyes opened as he remembered what had happened. He struggled to get up but a sharp pain accompanied the movement and he fell back down. "Don't move too much," A strong voice interrupted him. "You are still wounded."

Antonius ignored it and forced himself to turn until he came face to face with the large form Legate Alcaeus who looked down at him with a frown. "My mom? My dad?" He asked, his thoughts tumbling out. He took a deep breath and asked a proper question. "Are they okay?"

Legate Alcaeus grimaced. "They are alive," He told him and Antonius nodded. "But they are still unconscious. Though they were also healed by your Life-Saving Treasure, the poison damaged them far more than it did you. I don't know if or when they will wake up."

Antonius closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Then he turned his face towards the bed. He thought of his mother and his father. He thought about how suddenly an ally had turned against them and he thought about Yixuan Shan's final gift.

Then he screamed into the bed. He didn't know how long he did it. It probably wasn't that long, but he just knew that it was long enough that all of the emotions he was feeling was wrung out. Then after he quieted down and was too exhausted to even think of what to do next, he felt one of Alcaeus' strong hands on his back.

"Are you feeling better now, young man?" The legate asked him carefully. "Let us speak of what will come next."

Antonius turned back towards him. "What happens next?" He asked him, his voice strained. He wasn't sure whether that was because he just screamed so hard or because it was already damaged from the poison. "How long will I be this weak?"

"Most of your weakness will fade quickly." He answered, looking at you gravely. "You should be up and moving within the week, however you will still be weak for at least a few years. Almost certainly until the trials."

Antonius grimaced. "The trails. What will happen to my parents then? Will they still be hunted after then?"

Alcaeus nodded sadly. "The Fifth Sea hunters will hunt the hurt and healthy both equally," He replied. "However, this happened under my watch. It wasn't an enemy or a danger that hurt you, it was someone who should have been your ally and I will take responsibility for it."
A part of Antonius really wanted to blame him after he made that admission but instead he just nodded back. "I would be grateful for any aid you could give me, Legate Alcaeus." He told him. Blaming people would help no one. He needed to focus on making sure both he and his parents made it through the battle alive.

Upon hearing his reply, the Legate gave him a look he couldn't entirely read. Then the look was gone as he continued. "For the return trip to the clan's lands, I will give both you and your parents my personal attention." He said. "After returning, my attention will be spent on preparations for the coming trials but after them, I swear that I will aid you in healing your mother and father."

Antonius inclined his head in gratitude. It was more than he expected. "Thank you, Legate Alcaeus." He replied. "I will ensure that all of us will survive the trails so that your promise will not be in vain."

Legate Alcaeus nodded. "What are your plans for the trials?"

Antonius frowned. "I was hoping I would be permitted to stay behind the ninety sixth legion's arrays. I believe I may qualify for protection with my new-found cultivation level."

"You quite likely do," The Legate agreed. "I will speak to Wilhemina to ensure it and I will make sure that your father is allowed behind them as well. That should give you reasonable chances of survival. What of your mother?"

"She shouldn't be a target for the trials," Antonius replied, thinking it over. "I assume it would be possible to leave her in a secure location with a mortal trusted mortal attendant?"

"The Dawn Fortress will have none of the clan save the Archigetes and is unlikely to be targeted by the hunters. I have a room with it's own defences and a trusted staff that I will make available to you for the duration." The Legate offered and Antonius nodded quickly in acceptance.

"Thank you for everything, Legate Alcaeus." Antonius replied. This was beyond what he expected. At this point, he was likely better off than before in his chances of survival.

"If you wish to convey your gratitude, then survive and give back to the clan." Alcaeus told him and Antonius nodded in acceptance of that. "I will give you the details of a foundation establishment healer who once took care of me long ago. Speak to him about your parent's current medical needs. We will speak of full treatment once the trials are over."

Antonius nodded and for a moment he looked at the Legate's face as he studied him in turn. So much had happened so suddenly, but there was still hope in the horizon. As his head fell back on the bed and he began to drift into unconsciousness, only one thought crossed his mind.

His parents had protected him for so long. Now it would be his turn to protect them and ensure that they get better.

He wouldn't fail.

He'd have his family back.

The problem with paying for it now is that it leaves us unable to prepare for the blood cannibals, which is the conflict that will determine if we can recover from our losses.

The problem with the medium interest option is that it only provides us with an additional 2 wealth to prepare for the cannibals, and leaves us with a total negative of 4 wealth for the clan trials. I think that 2 wealth is more valuable before the war than the 4 wealth will be after it, but it is still fairly weak.

The permanent interest, however, leaves us with an additional 4 wealth (over the medium option) to deal with the war and leaves us with a total of 8 additional wealth for the trials. If we paid it off on the turn following the trials it will be at the measly cost of 2 more wealth than the medium option. Considering the straights that we are in, I think it is a very good deal.

The issue with saving up wealth to fortify the Blood Cannibals border isn't so much the Clan Focus options as they become available the next two turns.

It's the Purchase opportunities pursuant to that conflict.

We want to have big budget investments in the area to tilt the calculus as far in our favor as possible because after the 40 years are up we are going to be fighting at an inevitable disadvantage.

I am kind of leaning this way as well, just depends as Chron mentioned on the purchases. I don't have time to work out the projected incomes for the next three or so turns right now though so I'm going to poke at that later.

[ ] Plan Slow Start
-[ ] The Discipline of the Aspirants -
Her flighty nature means she fails to discipline the Aspirants to the old high standards. This will be reflected as a general malus in their combat ability as their co-ordination is impacted. All military rolls will be suffer a minor penalty until Year 200.
-[ ] She is blinded to the War in the Plains - Xinya doesn't have the spare assets to maintain a proper network in the Plains. Understanding the Devil Bees, Cannibals, and Jingshen Clan is effort enough.
-[ ] She is blinded to Blood Path rebels and spies - Xinya can look outwards, but at what cost? Spying on one's neighbours means lowering one's ability to keep out rebels and spies at home.
-[ ] Paying the debt today

Reasoning:
- the Discipline option is the one that impacts our recovery the least: it does not fuck up our urgent rebuilding of numbers and it does not send us into a death spiral should anything go wrong;
- the intrigue focus is on our immediate neighbours, as they seem to have the potential to fuck us up the worst if things go badly;
- paying the debt today loses us the smallest amount of total Wealth

Well, no, the discipline does fuck us up if we fail, it makes us more likely to lose.

Right now? We cannot afford to lose, except in the most mild way.

Practically speaking, the ones we can most afford to ignore right now are Jingshen and SPS. The former have been thoroughly spanked this turn, the latter are--frankly--beyond our ability to meaningfully influence in the immediate future outside of the measures we're already taking.

We need eyes on rebels, we need eyes on the Devil Bees, and we need eyes on Blood Cannibals. If we can sort those out, we'll be fine.

Again this is the time to prioritize the short term over the long term. We've already made massive long term gains, so accepting some inefficiency right now in the name of patching up our holes in preparation for two turns from now is straight up the better play.

Hmm, which is fair enough I guess, what's your gut say right now? Discipline/Interest/Jingshen/SPS?

Eirene of Nowhere twelfth omake - on matters of blood and bleeding

Eirene of Nowhere returned to the capital a year before the ten-year mark that would have her meeting with her family.

She'd been, frankly, procrastinating - yes, there was plenty to do at Pleuron, but there was plenty to do everywhere, and the matter of going back to the place she'd made her home for what was now the greater part of her life was stuck in the back of her mind like an aching tooth. She didn't want to go back; it was easier to process all this, to go through the changes - she was famous now, undeniably so, not just to those who tracked the progress of promising students, for one - in an unfamiliar place, as though starting anew, as though trying out a role in a play.

If she went back home and things were different, well, that'd mean the changes were real, wouldn't it? It'd mean things stuck, and Eirene wanted few things like seeing the whole last decade undone, forgetting it like a nightmare - a nightmare of devastation, of disorganization, of being stuck on the frontlines of rebuilding the Clan as someone others looked to alongside others of the Indomitable Thirteen - what a joke of a name! Eirene felt the furthest thing from indomitable as she looked at all the things there wer to do and wanted to break herself into a thousand pieces to do everything at once.

But she wouldn't go back on the word she'd given to her family, and that was enough of a push to drive her back. She knew she'd want time to get used to - what she didn't want to think about, so she budgeted it, so carefully and meticuously, every inch the burgeoning healer.

Andronike Kairos was dead.

Eirene hadn't known in advance, not before returning. She'd shied away from checking, separating herself out from the very thought of checking on her old friends - she knew there'd be losses.

A half. A half of the clan's Qi Condensation disciples were lost in the Trials, and the Thirteen's contribution was, perhaps, a gulf in that sea, not a droplet, but still...

A half.

Less than half, of those Eirene knew personally and trained with, so the dice fell; but Andronike was dead, and the world was wrong and surreal and covered in green patina. Eirene worked and researched and went through the motions as even her cultivation stalled, for suddenly she found herself not liking the idea of being alone with her mind.

War was bad.

This wasn't a new thought by any means. All the ideas of glory in combat got burned out of anyone who worked as a healer quickly enough, and Eirene was no exception, having bloodied herself thoroughly before she ever had a thought of cultivation. Being a bard did not help either; Eirene had learned more tragedies by heart than most of her approximate cultivation peers - she had few exact peers, these days - had ever heard. The Clan was a war machine, it was true, and Eirene worked herself to the bone in those early years of trying to find her own martial path, but training was one thing and the actual mutual killing another.

The thought not being new did not make it any less true.

A thousand fragments of life, of skill, of mastery, of stories, turning bloody one by one - a thousand fragments of death, of loss, of suffering, of pain. Eirene had hid in rebuilding from looking at the true extent of the ruins, but it was only deferred for a time, and now was catching up with her.

Andronike Kairos, the first person she'd ever truly called a friend, the first peer she ever came to fully trust. The person who'd encouraged her and supported her and made her believe in her own potential where she'd have preferred to minimize and hide and stay in the background. Serious yet ready for a laugh, focused and knowing what she wanted; her ambitions ended here, at the Trials. So many people's did.

A year wasn't enough; a lifetime wouldn't be enough, perhaps, but the year did culminate with the Shattered Mirror coming to embrace their wayward daughter. Funny: her age peers were now elders, yesterday's children new adults setting the direction for the carnival's future, yet more children only ever heard of her as a magic story... and Healer Xia Fan had passed away. Another kind of loss: not one brought on by the injustice of slaughter, but simply of time. It was bitter, but almost refreshing: she'd always known she'd outlive her teacher, and thinking about it was a familiar track of thought. She grieved, supported by her junior brother: Han Jiao had had two years already to get used to the loss, and now had a shoulder for her to cry on, and if she cried about more loss than just that one on it, well, who was to judge?

Shattered Mirror stayed in the capital for a full year this time, giving her time to get to know all the children thoroughly (and them her), giving her time to help write more than one play about the events at Pleuron - all the writers and a few people who normally weren't went moony over the thought of having access to a primary source like that, and it was almost funny in its familiarity. Slowly, slowly, Eirene put her mind back together, in a different configuration than it had been before, but that was how things went, with mosaics.

Many different pictures could be made, with infinite pieces.

Back when Eirene had first arrived to the capital, steeling herself to leaving familiar life in favor of the unknown, healing was at the forefront of her thoughts, driving her determination to throw herself forward. The battle against death, one both eternally won and eternally lost; she had new perspective on what that meant, now, and drove herself into the intricacies of the healing Path furiously. Oh she still found time to devote to other studies; that was her Dao, and she had no intention of living her life in any other way. But she healed, and researched healing, and taught healing - this was a new minor project of hers, actually.

There were always some people in Qi Condensation following the path of a healer, and little coordinated effort to teach them. Less so now that after the Trials the very idea of "coordinated effort" started being a difficulty for the Clan; and now that the structure of teaching, alongside all the others, was being rebuilt again, Eirene inserted herself into it unobtrusively. By the standards of cultivators she was a baby - fifty-odd years, not even a century! - but she'd been interacting with mortals enough to have edges of their mindset burned into hers, and that mindset knew that there was a world of difference between fifty-odd and twenty. She had a lot to give, a lot to teach, encouraging people who were hesitating between the healing path and others and helping those who knew their calling and could use support - everyone could use support, really, and Eirene found that healing others healed, bit by bit, her own self.

And then there was that fascinating kid with the unique bloodline - so very childish in the simplicity of her drive. Beat up death, make people live rather than not - she was serious and she smelled blood and she associated sweet taste with challenge and work to drive away death. Blood path, but almost in reverse - many of Eirene's peers and seniors found the girl creepy, in need of oversight, potentially dangerous.

Eirene found her intoxicating to be around, to watch, to teach, fueling her own drive to the extent that made her previous forays into the art of healing to be half-hearted and half-assed. The girl represented something entirely different, something new, new potentials and the potential of everything to be intertwined with everything else - young Aliki's humanity was entirely in her connections with others, and yet she had more of it, Eirene found, than many of entirely human descent and shape.

This was one little, wild-haired danger that would only be to the concepts of death and sickness, as long as Eirene had anything to say about it.
end omake

@Alectai I'm sorry to say there was ~0 control I had over this. Your new baby's getting mentor-adopted and there's nothing to be done about that!

Allright one last post on this. I've banged my head against the numbers a few times and the final choice pretty much all depends on the value of the strength purity agreement and how long it lasts.

I don't think it's in question that we should take the [] Fortify focus next turn on the blood cannibal area, which has no wealth cost. This will add to the inital fortifying we did via []Direct rule, which should put us in good shape generally.

Having looked at turn 5 one of our crash reinforcement options cost 5 wealth.
[ ] Purchase Formation Plates (5 Wealth)
I can't imagine that crash build options against the blood cannibals would cost much more.

It is also worth noting that Manuel will be back up and running next turn, and we will have his action back. This is likely to be spent on 1 of three things: Intrigue defence, training clan member to aid recovery or wealth generation. In ideal circumstances it will be one of those first 2.

If we [] pay today, and the -6 comes out before the turn starts, we drop down to 5 wealth at the start of turn 7. Wheras if we [] borrow against tomorrow, we start out with 8 wealth.

Table assuming we spend nothing, income remains static and strength purity offers nothing.

Pay nowBorrowForever
Start turn 7 - Wealth5810
Start turn 8 - Wealth81014

Start turn 9 - Wealth
181713

As you can see, in the short term, there is only a very small advantage to borrowing, and it means we are still paying when the next trials begin. If the strength purity sect's treaty is worth as little as 5 wealth on this turn only , then I'd take the hit and go with Pay now as it shouldn't make too big a difference in what options we can pick with our wealth.

This table also makes [] Pay forever look very good, but it's got a massive exit cost that must be paid as a lump sum, which is the nasty bit...

Again this is the time to prioritize the short term over the long term. We've already made massive long term gains, so accepting some inefficiency right now in the name of patching up our holes in preparation for two turns from now is straight up the better play.
True, but I'm not sure picking the sure malus to our military rolls is best when we will absolutely be fighting a war when the blood cannibals start up. Honestly I'm actually tempted to go with the malus to growth as the best option, especially if we can spare Manuel to do some clan training for one action to counteract it.

Yeah on principle I'm opposed to paying off the debt right now

Our finances are already stretched for the next three turns thanks to the Mercenaries and we only have two turns to get any Purchases going that could help shore up our defenses and lack of reliable core formation fighters because we are gonna get hit hard by the Blood Cannibals opening move.

Our new territories arent remotely as well fortified as our Devil Bees border and even that nearly fell if not for the Night Devil Fortress providing us with necessary bonuses to stave off disaster.

So yeah we need to scrape together every bit of income we can get the next two turns

But yeah, my gut feeling is... Blind to War and Jingshen (So that Devil Bees, Internal Rebels, and Blood Cannibals are back up to scratch). We either do Discipline of the Aspirants (Which I'm uncomfortable with, because we need as many bonuses as we can to deal with the Blood Cannibals), or Shakes the Dao-Hearts, which is terrible if things go badly but otherwise harmless.

And frankly, I don't feel we're in the position we can afford even a 'Regular' Disaster at the moment anyway. We're one military Disaster from a deathspiral as it is given our lack of Core Formations. "When you deathspiral, you deathspiral even harder" doesn't change the fact you are in a flatspin either way.

As for the Debt... It depends. If this is in addition to the inefficiency penalty, then paying the debt today is crushingly expensive (But not as expensive as Interest Forever is). If it replaces the inefficiency penalty... Well, we currently have +6 stored away, we're likely to have significant additional income still due to our depleted numbers (Though not necessarily the +10 we had this turn), and our base income is about 5.

So we're looking at 11 + 10ish. About 21 Wealth. -5 for our militia mobilization and we're at 16 or so.

If paying down the debt immediately is in addition to the inefficiency penalty, then we'd be suicidal to do so.

If it replaces the inefficiency penalty... We're still looking at around 10 Wealth to spend. Not a fortune, but enough to make a solid go at creating a firing line on our border. Then the turn afterward we'd have much more.

Of course, by the same token, if it replaces--then Interest Forever would have us at around 15 Wealth, which is considerably more.

Then again, we need to look to the short term above all else right now. So it should still be the best bet I think.

Vote in Summary:

1) We can't afford a even an ordinary disaster in our current state, an intensified disaster in light of that is... Honestly "Did you die from a sucking chest wound or by decapitation?" While a malus to our conventional fighting skill might turn an otherwise normal loss into a disaster, and flip a victory into a stalemate.
2) Plains are largely beyond our ability to influence beyond what we have already achieved, we need to tighten our focus. Jingshen has been suitably chastened over this turn and has had the doomclock set back quite some time, they won't be able to easily make good on this. Meanwhile, we have two mortal enemies winding up to have a go, and letting a blood path rebellion spool up will be far more damaging to us than any external attack might.
3) We need money today, if this turns that -7 malus into a -1 and just makes it a project to clear out later? It's a worthwhile problem to solve tomorrow, and it gives us a solid budget for next turn's storm prep.

I'm mostly satisfied by this plan for this reason, save for the possible clarification on how Manuel taking a manual sweep for infiltrators works mechanically.

If it works the way I suspect it does, then we can afford to let Manuel do a couple of personal sweeps himself up until the turn of the century when the malus to those rolls will presumably work itself out and we no longer have to worry about it

An option we could go with is reducing numbers, what are your thoughts on that, as its spread out over the course of an entire century?

Alectai... I have no idea where you're getting these numbers?

If this is in addition to the existing efficiency penalty, then our start of term wealth numbers for each option should be as I posted above (5, 8, 10), and we're not getting above 10 without the strength purity injection no matter what option we take. There's relatively little between the options.

I have no idea where you got 21 wealth. We had 11 at the start of this turn, with an expected income of +10 next turn. We then paid 5 for core formation cultivators, bringing us down to 6 and pulling our generation rate down by 5 for an additional 2 turns. Without the councillor penalties (or the Strength purity bonus of unknown size), that puts us right back at 11 at the start of next turn. (11-5+10-5). Taking the model that the inefficency penalty vanishes at then end, then over 2 turns the [] interest forever gains us a max of 5 wealth, which is essentially 1 extra purchase option at max.

Replacing the inefficiency penalty instantly makes virtually no sense to me from a balance perspective, I admit. Our income generation this turn was +10 including the +10 & -7 modifiers. Even saying the 'everybody's dead' modifier dropped off by 2 points in 1 turn as we replaced losses then [] interest forever would skyrocket our wealth income to around +14/+15 a turn without the strength purity injection. That would just be completely, ludicrously broken.

That's my preferred approach.

We're inevitably operating at a quantitative disparity no matter how we approach things, thus we're better suited going for stacking up qualitative advantages wherever possible
