Harry Potter and the Skittering Spouse

I bet it is further away than 600 feet, which is why it is more likely that she simply moves into the Gryffindor tower without sorting. Why risk her being sorted into another house if she can't live there?

It most certainly is. I said she could be in any house, but would unlikely be sent to Slytherin since it'd be dangerous for her. Others were the ones who jumped on Hufflepuff.

I actually think this Taylor would certainly be sorted into Gryffindor. Remember she had just surrendered to the PRT and her plan was to be sent after the worst of the worst criminals to hone herself while preparing for the end of the world. Pretty much the epitome of Gryffindor.

It would allow her to basically merge into the swarm.

Which is absolutely where she doesn't likely want to be if she's using them as a distraction. Of course there's the double feint she could pull, where she makes swarm clones and transforms, but the thing about such a small form that makes it utterly useless in Taylor's hands is the fact any arthropod form is so small and easy to be crushed, or burned, or blasted to smithereens. Why use such a form? To sneak around to listen on conversations? Use the venom on an opponent? It's already possible with her power and won't place her in direct harm's way. She could use it, but there's little potential in it. Which is why I've been trying to steer away from those forms in this discussion.

Like if she's going to be ambushing someone she can already do so and avoid danger completely with her power.

I doubt she will be sorted at all, considering she isn't a witch.

Counter-point, she needs to be attending Hogwarts as a student and Sorted to continue her cover story of being a cursed Witch. Harry would absolutely support her getting the education "denied" her, that's pretty much a surety given who he is and how he acts. Him doing otherwise would be highly suspicious. Plus Taylor wouldn't throw away the opportunity to gather more knowledge. Even knowing the theory without being able to do it personally is still incredibly useful knowledge. She could still potentially learn to brew in Potions, create and use Ancient Runes, study Arithmancy and Astronomy, and the Care for Magical Creatures. The only classes she'd be unable to complete practical exercises is in Transfiguration, Charms and DADA and potentially Divination.

…. I really need to get a move on with this because the speculation is leaving me torn between laughter and headache.

I doubt any animal but a bug would be useful to her, with bugs she can take her faints and bug clones to the next level, hide in cracks, fly by being carried in her fliers to become invisible and get to places she otherwise wouldn't, a big animal will likely be less useful than simply shooting or beating someone unless it is magical.

Bird might be good, but the question is also not just what useful, but what's will fit her.

I see it differently I guess. Yes there's all that, but if she can pull off an Animagus transformation I imagine Apparition would be in her capabilities. The main reason more Wizards don't use it in combat is the fact it can result in you splinching yourself because things aren't where you expected them to be. Taylor wouldn't have that problem with her limited omniscience, thereby eliminating most of those advantages a small form would have. The others like flying could be taken care of by a broom or other tool. Just to make my case for a hunting cat since they have some significant advantages that Taylor wouldn't have otherwise. A hunting cat can move completely silently, get around in an urban environment pretty effectively via climbing (again relatively quietly), and blend into areas with remarkable ease plus they have excellent senses and natural weapons in their claws and teeth. Some of those qualities are shared, but not all, particularly the senses one. Taylor gets away with her power via bug senses achieved with quantity since most arthropods have crap senses, but a predatory mammal's senses would blow those out of the water by orders of magnitude. Still I don't expect her to pull off any really impressive magic (excepting potentially Runes) until the end of the coming school year, so this is still all speculation.

I'm looking forward to it, kinda reaching my limits for potential new discussion topics at the moment. Only other thing I could think of that might be potentially useful in terms of inspiration is alternative Wizarding Foci, like bracelets, rings or talismans like Shikigami or paper seals. But I don't see how that'd be immediately useful. Maybe for after Year 6.

Taylor, unless OP seriously changes things, cannot attend Hogwarts as a student; the first requirement is the ability to use a wand.

You have to have enough magic to use a wand; Hagrid, despite being half giant, went, because he could use a wand. Tom Riddle's mother didn't, because she was 'nearly a squib' and couldn't ever work the levitation spell, as we saw in Canon.

Actually, that's the second requirement; the racist shits insist that you be human, or at least half human first.

The wizards, especially the purebloods are not going to let some cursed squib in their precious school. A hired hand, like Hagrid or Filch, maybe.

Assuming, of course, that Fencer doesn't pull some more AU out.

No, that was the epitome of stupid, in that A. The PRT isn't going to accept the terms you set; they can't, not and keep any authority anywhere. And B. Attacking people like Heartbreaker, Momma Mathers and the ilk without real backup and support is just a fast way to die before Gold Morning.

She could still potentially learn to brew in Potions, create and use Ancient Runes, study Arithmancy and Astronomy, and the Care for Magical Creatures.
As we saw in fifth and sixth years, if you're not the size and toughness of Hagrid, you need a wand in Care of Magical Creatures; not to mention the sheer number of creatures that can only be stopped by wands. Potions also requires innate magic, which might be possible via the marriage bond, we'll have to wait and see.

You do realize that Canon Ancient Runes was basically a dead language class, right? No practical use at all? Arithmancy is basically coding for spells; useless without magic. (Jeez, I spent too much time fact checking Pottermore today.)

Fair enough, we'll see what @Fencer decides.

You aren't wrong, however thats still embodies the characteristics of Gryffindor perfectly. Just because it was foolish, or never going to happen, doesn't mean she wasn't also showing courage and bravery, as misplaced as it may have been.

True enough, but knowledge is knowledge. She won't turn it down, even if she can't personally act against the creatures or make the potions. Knowing how they act or their weaknesses is still incredibly useful. And knowing which potions to use and when is still incredibly important info. Didn't remember that about the Rune class. It sadly was not expanded on very much since Harry didn't take it, so I'm not too surprised I forgot that.

There is nothing in the Gryffindor creed about foolhardy stunts, nor sheer stupidity.

"Gryffindor values courage, bravery, nerve, and chivalry. Gryffindor's mascot is the lion, and its colours are scarlet red and gold (maroon and gold on the ties and scarves)."

Bravery is not slapping a dragon in the face blindfolded, nor pushing authority figures into corners.

Courage is not stepping up while your friends sneak around to do stuff if you don't get your way.

I will grant her sheer nerve here.

Chivalry? Skitter? You'll never find those two words in any sentence except: "Skitter has never had any chivalry."

You know, someone mentioned how Taylor can't sleep in another Houses rooms due to the distance, but has anyone has brought up Quidditch?

Unless the arena is significantly less than 600ft, the Harry can't play.

To be fair nearly everything J.K. writed can be used in a ofensive way, the Cheering charms as i see it make the body produce (or magicaly induce) a flush of cerotonine and/or other happy hormones, you can pretty much fuck someone big time by making them high on happyness or over extended periods. The tickle charm can be over used to private someone of oxigen, etc...

The world of HP is a terrifing one if you only apply a little ingenuity on what is low grade reality warping.
Well to be fair when She started writing the books Rowling was writing a kids book that essentialy grew up alongside it's audience and then the audience having grown up maybe discovered things like TTRPG's or how life can give a swift kick in the teeth well I just don't think she has a mind that is geared towards creative destruction unlike a lot of her readers. like Off the top of my head I can think of probably three or four spells that are casualy used in HP that could be geared towards warcrimes. and they aren't "Dark"

Taylor:

"Nobody but me and Harry cared about the binding magic. Until they discovered that it meant he couldn't play Quidditch, then they launched a major effort to remove the stupid thing. First time schools being obsessed with sports worked for me."

Interesting to see you take this challenge @Fencer I can't wait to see where you take this….

And I will admit I transplanted normal Taylor for Arsenal/Legacy…

Arsenal: "Does your magic system have any scrying?"

*Great Britain suddenly suffers from a rain of swords."

Ok ok ok! Head cold on the retreat. Windows all seran wrapped for the winter… well I may need to redo a couple, but it's technically done, and if it manages to keep my electricity bill down to 3x the summer cost instead of 4x I'll count is as a win. dishes cooking and laundry are done, bills are paid…. Ok… Ok! Adulting done and dusted, update is not but it's close now I just have to beat my muse into submission and get past this one annoying bit. Rewriting bits of canon Is boring. Super boring. Just the worst most un-interesting Garbage… how do the writers for this fandom stand aping cannon so closely so often? How?

A lot of fanfiction authors write fanfic as a kind of literary junk food, regurgitating concepts and plots to try to recapture the feelings they had when encountering the original; the same goes for copycat fics. A lot of writers do it because they're fundamentally non-creative and that's why they're writing fanfic instead of original fiction.

And, well, there are also better reasons: Some people do it because they treat plot as an afterthought to some other aspect of the story, like romance or worldbuilding. Other people want to use the most well-characterized elements of the setting to make things easier!

Personally I agree that it's usually unsatisfying to recreate canon, and often requires a lot of blatant railroading, but there are a few good reasons!

By definition, it's an AU. Use what you need and handwave the rest out of the way. The average reader won't even notice the difference unless attention is drawn.

it's okay! It's great to be back. I cover all my windows in the winter with silane ... okay I have to change some but technically my electric bill is 3x what it is in the summer not 4x. If you can do it, it's a win. Cooking, laundry, paying the bills... yes, yes! The grown-ups' work is done and the dust has settled. The update is not finished yet but it is ready and you have to defeat this evil group by defeating the rats. So boring The worst, the worst... How could the author of this fanfic imitate the Defenders in that way? in?
I was bored so I decided to run this post through google translate a dozen times and I shall reply to it instead.

Conclusion: Fencer, you are drunk. Go home.

To those of you suggesting I murder canon believe me I'm with you but, "hey harry check if you own kreacher so we can go back to squating in your house without rent or even keeping you in the loop" needs to be touched on if only so Taylor can start setting lose those butterflies we all want.

@Functionality dude… the hell?
