Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

For minerals Jadeite or pure jade is better overall, as it goes for over a million a carat. Which is nothing weight wise. Buy some random plot of oh it just so happens to have these masterwork jewelry from some forgotten time.
Best is something thats fungible.
Melted gold or platinum or palladium looks like any other precious metal out there, and will vanish into the general supply without drawing any attention from anyone besides who you sold it to, especially if you offer a healthy discount off market rates.

Sell a couple hundred kilos in Chicago, sell some more in Detroit, and more in St Louis. If you're feeling really paranoid, travel the Ways and sell some abroad. Spread it out, and you'll hopefully avoid too much attention from dumping a lot of metal in one place.
Once you get your money, you can even pay taxes on it perfectly legally.

Plus, there are a lot more people willing and able to buy gold and other precious metals than can buy gemstones.

EDIT
Now that I think of it, this is a lot of unnecessary effort to launder gold.
Just call Thomas Raith and offer him a 5% cut to launder a thousand kilograms of gold or platinum.
The Raiths have the family business connections for this, and he's got previous experience representing the family officially..
Molly was dressing goth at that age.
She waited a bit longer before secretly learning magic and getting herself into serious danger.
Symptom of rebellion, not cause.
Besides, Molly canonically manifested magic around two years before Proven Guilty.
She was 14/15.

[X] You know what? Fine, but dad gets to veto which subjects I am allowed to teach you.

It makes more sense for Molly I think. She's not going to coddle her siblings like she feels her mom is doing to her, and this way she gets to protect her little siblings a little in a dangerous world. At the same time, by looping Micheal into it, Molly is reaching out with an olive branch to show Charity that she's still listening to her.

"Creatures of Darkness" in Exalted is a very much non-conceptual term, it means being on the Unconquered Sun's naughty list, a concrete list kept somewhere in the Celestial Bureaucracy. There are some default category entries, but sufficiently convincing prayer-appeals to the Unconquered Sun can get a human added to the list, or get a ghost removed from it.

I have no idea how it works in this crossover, but I would not assume the Unconquered Sun's opinion is a dealbreaker for Michael.

You guys are both occult 5 and very much a Creature of Darkness so here is how the demon in your head explains the concept:

Darkness is ever-changing, darkness is the hidden and the unshaped, in darkness dwell those who do not wish to be defined by the burning light. Hence you shall find the rebellious, the mad, the dreamer and the poet. To drink of darkness is to accept its peril,, it is to be the hunter and it is to be hunted. There is no throne that is not propped on the tips of spears, no throne beyond toppling, no power beyond question, lowest slave to highest of the tyrants one truth they know: Winner takes it all.

Clever girl. I didnt even consider nucleosynthesis as a plan for making money.
Just find somewhere isolated away from people, either in the wilderness or inside her personal Hell, and transmute lead or mercury to gold or platinum, and fence it on the open market. Precious metals are always fungible.

2006 prices for gold are around $20,000 a kilo; platinum is roughly $35,000 a kilo.
Thats almost half to a third of modern prices, but still enough that transmuting 1-2 tons of raw material to gold would give you a yearly income in excess of twenty million dollars.

If she uses her power to make it into coins or bars it looks even more legit.
Do transmutation of a ton of material and we solve most of our short to medium term financial problems. No lottery necessary.
We owe Leech something nice for her birthday.
Honestly, it's very inefficient (in terms of time and resources spent). Artificial gem production is much faster, easier and cheaper, with better payoff. Gold is also very much identifiable by where it was obtained. In terms of what to sell, specific isotopes of different elements should be better, like oxygen18 and such. Gems better still (wider market, less trackable, less under scrutiny). Valuables (ie golden pocket watches, Faberge-like eggs and such) better, and with lowest amount of heat directed at us.

And becoming known as a talented artist could be a good thing, socially.

Easier to track gemstones though, and harder to find buyers.

Radiation could be a problem though.

Dressing goth might have been a symptom, but going out to fight monsters wasn't the cause.

Her arguments with Charity at that point we're mostly more standard things about how she could speak, dress, and associate with, along with a few other things.

Later when she grew into her magic she kept it hidden for fear of her mother forcing her to give it up, but she wasn't training to be Batman or something. Her biggest use was the mental alterations she made to her friends in a misguided attempt to cure drug addiction.

Now going out to pull a Harry or Micheal did become a point of contention later, but not until she had a notable amount of power going for her.

I don't think there's any inherent hypocrisy in her saying he shouldn't do this until he's older, and preferably even then only try if he's got a supernatural gimmick all his own to work with. Because that's the order she did it in canon, and doesn't contradict any argument she's actually made to anyone up to this point in time.

We aren't established enough to take responsibility for giving a 13 year old life altering magic powers. I mean, as likely as not he'll go full chuuni with it and get someone hurt.

Edit: just noticed more weird errors. I think I need spell check for my spell check.

At least in case of gold, no, not really. It's trackable by impurities, and it's subject to more attention.

Plus, nuclear alchemy is really inefficient. Like, really inefficient. Let be give you an approximate calculation.

Let's say we use the charm to make a particle accelerator. Probably plasma wake one, as normal ones would be too large and unwieldy. Let's say that the efficiency of transmutation is 1:1 (i.e. for one particle accelerated, it will transform one particle of the target into desired element). This is already the realm of magic by the way. Physics doesn't work like that, and the efficiency would be far lower. By the way, we would also need hydrogen. A lot of it, to make protons with. Let's say that the accelrator current is 1 A. That's also magic, normally you don't get anything beyond 1 microampere in normal size machines (I am not talking LHC). Meaning that I am generously giving this estimation six orders of magnitude handicap. That's 1.6E19 particles per second. Atomic mass of gold is 197. So, one gram of gold contains 1/(197*1.66E-24) particles. This translates to 1e5/197= 500 seconds to transmute one gram of gold. Taking into account the magic I mentioned, you can safely raise this estimate by two orders of magnitude. This means 1 gram per 50000 seconds, or roughly 1.5 grams of gold per day.

This is why I keep pushing for arts and crafts. Making jewelry (stuff like mechanical jewelry boxes, custom firearms, mechanical dolls and music boxes) is far more legitimate and profitable. Expensive, but mass produced music boxes go for tens of thousands of dollars easily. Custom made beyond human capability art pieces? We are talking millions here.

1)Not when you're using magically efficient tools.

2)Not really.

Gemstones have regional appeal; the West might be infatuated by diamonds, for instance, but it holds much less interest to people in Africa or India. Jade's appeal in China does not translate to most of Europe.
And Faberge eggs are a what? for most of the world's population in Africa and Asia.

Gold's appeal however is universal, regardless of whether its the West or the Third World, Africa or Asia, America or Europe.
And its much easier to fence.

3)You can literally sell gold in a pawn shop if need be, whether jewelry, bars or coins.
No certification is required, and the buyer does not need specialized tools to assess its purity and validity as compared to gemstones, which have a much smaller class of discerning buyer.

Even supernaturals value gold in a way they dont other stuff, and use it as legal tender; Marcone paid his weregild in gold bullion.

4)We dont want to be known in those circles for those things.
It does not help us in any way I am aware of, and comes with major disadvantages with tegards to questions about the source of our raw materials and financial backing.

You cant just emerge out of nowhere with no data trail of training or patrons and financiers and expect people will not ask questions. Including law enforcement AND organized crime.

5)Dude, no. That stuff is all trackable in a way that raw precious metals are not. Veblen goods like gold watches and Faberge eggs are valuable for what brand they are, and their maker. No-name brand watches and Faberge egg knockoffs do not have the same demand, and draw investigation from the makers of the originals.

If we wanted to be tracked we'd just go back to the lottery plan and use the Crown of Eyes once on a lottery jackpot.

Easier to track gemstones though, and harder to find buyers.

Magically efficient nucleosynthesis with x10 time acceleration.
I assume Molly will figure out which source materials go best with what.

1)No it is not.
You can track unconcentrated gold ore by impurities.
Refined gold? Magically refined 24 karat gold? Nope.

Once its refined its fungible; pure gold from Sudan and from Australia look exactly the same in a spectrometer.
Comingle it, mint it in bars and coins, sell it to the jewelry industry, the electronics industry, bankers...everyone wants some.

2)There is a vastly greater global appetite for gold and platinum as both industrial metals, stores of value and as jewelry.
The yearly production of diamonds in 2019 is 149 million carats or 28.4 tons
Yearly demand for gold alone in the same year is more than 4000 tons, with platinum around 200 tons.

And unlike gems, it has universal appeal in places where gemstones dont; India for example, while still a developing country in 2022 has a demand for gold in excess of 800 tons yearly, an appetite that only rises as they get wealthier. This means that you can sell it in a lot more places, and use it as a medium of exchange.

3)The aesthetic is the cyberpunk/cybertech tools of The Wicked City. Its magically efficient.
We're not worrying about the power requirements for nucleosynthesis in the way we would if we were doing so in an actual nuclear reactor.

Honestly the lottery plan is the most secret way to get money. You don't even have to show your face to collect the prize you can just send a lawyer to collect deposit it on your behalf. Even if you win a big prize I would wait until it ticks over 100 million you can be discrete. Or just have an ally win and split the prize with us.

Apparently we'd need to use Technology if we wanted the 10x boost.
If we use Craft, its 5x.
Dammit.
Ah well. Guess Molly will just summon some aid to help.

Only 7 to 9 states allow lottery winners to maintain anonymity. Illnois is not one of them.
There's stuff you can try with shell corporations but I dont recall the details, and I dont know how well it works at shielding your identity from anything other than casual curiosity.

IIRC, you don't actually have to live in a state to purchase tickets there. If we took a trip to Ohio, or some other nearby state that allows winner anonymity, we shouldn't have too much trouble.

How about we create a proper plan for building up infrastructure and figure out how much money and anonymity we need to get going, then figure out how to get that money.

We can all agree that ridiculous amounts of money will be useful in the future when we start going from "random nobody" to "faction in our own right," and we all agree that our Exaltation gives us options to generate money that mortals don't have, but I haven't seen any concrete plans to use that money beyond sitting on it like a dragon's hoard, or any solid estimates on how much we'll need to get going.

So how about we figure out our plans on a larger scale first and then come up with how to get our seed funds?

I did consider this. Impediments include
1)Need to be 18 to buy a lottery ticket, else its rendered invalid. Molly is 17 for at least another 5 months.
2)In a universe with genuine magical divination and mindwhammy vampires, this is only a shield against casual curiosity.

Of course we could always rob the Red Court.
Whether by hacking companies, stealing a bunch of secret bank accounts or just walking the Ways to Latin America, murdering everyone on a Red Court estate and looting the safes.

That IS jumping into the ongoing war with both feet, though.

I made an estimate upthread of around $35 million in order to end up with $10 million in investments, income of $600k yearly/$50k monthly, a $1 million dollar slush fund and a blind trust for our siblings and parents with a million dollars per individual. Thats after taxes. Its not mega huge, but its not a trivial amount of cash either. Firmly 1% territory.

Most of our infrastructure requirements are unknown, not that we need infrastructure.

We want a Dragon Nest for.....stuff, but acquiring legal possession of one depends on where its located, and we have no way of predicting that; could be a junkyard, could be some high end piece of real estate.
Could be in the hands of someone unwilling to sell.

Each 5 dot Arcana we might want to build is a Resource 5 expenditure according to the latest set of crafting rules.
No idea if we'll have realworld minions, and if that will cost money.
So on.

We do definitely want the training charm, sadly it makes the mortal a creature of darkness. And until we determine what exactly can call down the US wrath it to dangerous for familiy members to benefit from.
We don't actually need to turn the people/beings we train into creatures of darkness as long as we get the Middle Ages version of the Charm Chirality Prohibition Index. And so we can train our brothers if necessary.

It's also worth noting here that synthetic gems are really easy to detect when they assess them, because even the highest quality natural gem has more imperfections in it.

Even if we overcome the difficulties around having a smaller market of people unlikely to take walk in sales of loose gems, unloading enough of them over time is inviting someone to draw inconvenient conclusions.

We should have some bigger plans true, but that's still sort of doing things backwards.

A lot of our prep work is going to be in the spend money to make money cycle before we get to the really good stuff if we want to avoid boom-bust spending habits.

What we plan to will be heavily influenced by how we plan to get our start up money.

Making money by restoring old cars or flipping houses with Molly's 10x work speed and free tools would look very different in profile and anonymity needs than winning all the money we need at once and putting it on the stock market after all.

On the matter of making plans, the problem in my opinion is that we do the voting day by day and during that period the goals of the readers shift wildly from one side to the other. @DragonParadox are you going to do vote for the whole weeks or some timeskip in the future? If not, I can't imagine how we're going to build our dragon's nest stronghold, get and train servants, build things, get into the plots of the other books etc, do any of those things that many are looking forward to on a useful timescale.

Of course, I might be exaggerating a bit, but I really feel that weekly plans are a better alternative to daily plans when it comes to bigger or longer goals.

Synthetic gem identification requires training or so Im told, and really good synthetics are essentially impossible to differentiate without a makers mark, or so I'm told.

A pawn shop owner with no training or experience otoh, even without Xray equipment or a handheld electronic scanner is going to be able to do most of the ID work with basic supplies, from visual inspection to the scratch test to the float test(dropping it in water) to checking for magnetism to the acid test(the purer gold is, the stronger the acid needed to disssolve it)

Just by referring to a cheat sheet.
Gold is easy.

Its not day by day, its scene by scene.
We've been working on a short timescale because a lot of the early story is compressed, we're still setting setting elements, and there's a lot of background plot shit going on atm; there IS a war on.

If things slow down we'll probably timeskip a bunch.

DP mentioned earlier in the thread that regular passage of time will be handled on a weekly basis when we're not focused on events like we have been while getting started as baby Exalts.
