Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

COMMENTARY
Molly on a social roll is a fairly impressive/terrifying thing to see or read.

First Harrowmont says he doesnt socialize with the students. But he was sufficiently involved with Patricia Ruiz-Borges to know what she was investigating. Doesnt necessarily denote malice, since I doubt he could hide such from Molly's obscene social rolls. Just that we are talking to someone who has his own biases coloring his recollections.

Okay. So Orpheus was likely a friend of Harrowmont's; if nothing else, they were apparently both alchemists, which means they would have moved in some of the same circles. Given the description, Im guessing that Sandra set him up, either as a collaborator or a dupe, and was using him as a vector for certain influences.

And the Dragon went after the obvious source and got nailed.

Especially given the reports about the spike in Uni student breakdowns before exams and the rumors of illicit substances in use. Exam time is when students are most prone to abuse certain classes of drugs for academic performance after all.
And Orpheus was also an alchemist who made potions for a select clientele.

Sounds very much like a replay of the Three Eye case from the beginning of Harry's career.

Sandra seems to have a thing for predating on young people in the just approaching/reached maturity range
Preference or vulnerability, Im not sure. Anyway, since Harrowmont appears to have seen and met these people, even though he doesnt remember them, we can use this scene as a Crown focus to identify them.

No need to rely on his recollections or alchemy.

The chances for actually finding a useful bit of Sandra just laying around in a chemistry lab of all places are not worth the time investment. At least not right now when we're still so heavily injured.

[X] Refuse, you still need to heal, just wait for Harrowmont to give you the course list and the list of students he had seem with Sandra
He didnt say we had to show up immediately.

Its currently around 2.30-3AM 13 January, which is a Saturday, and Molly is at 7/15 Health.
It will take her 8 hours to finish healing at a rate of 1HL/hour, so she'll be done healing by 10.30-11AM. So schedule a meeting with Harrowmont on the University of Nevada campus at 12PM, which gives us a safety factor of 1 hour.

If he's a powerful sorcerer already it seems possible for us to stretch a wish far enough to bridge that last gap.
He's not a powerful sorcerer.
Canonically weak enough that when he tried to take the White Council tests, he scored so low that his examiner didnt bother to warn him about breaking the Laws.

He's a bibliomancer. His magic paradigm allegedly works best with books and preptime
Hence his choice of profession as an archivist.
It also means that Dresden could really terrifying with curses if he wanted to be.
Point.
See the loup-garou attack on the police station in Fool Moon, where Dresden used a sample of the loup-garou's blood to curse him into blindness, deafness et cetera after he attacked the police station.

However, I see a couple potential problems:
1)Arcane foci age out.
Dresden just experienced that recently when he tried to use Molly's old hairs to track her after the fetches took her to Arctis Tor.

2)There are mundane countermeasures for that sort of thing
See what Binder did after Murphy arrested him and had Dresden take hair from him; he got rid of his clothes, shaved, jumped into running water. Sandra knows we are here with a wizard, so she's probably

3)Sandra Marling is an Outsider agent, and people who do deals with Outsiders, can get Investments, or similar boons.
See Lord Raith, who had immunity to mortal magic.

It might not be worth the trouble of throwing remote magic at her if her sugar daddy(s) are simply going to nope it.
Depends on how much time and effort something like that requires.
And whether the combination of Molly/Lydia/Lash backing any ritual magic can supercharge such a curse sufficiently to

It should be notes that just because their patron can do something does not mean any given agent has those advantages. Papa Raith had solid personal reasons to ask for that anti-magic. Other people with Friends on the Other side might ask for other things.

RATIONALE
Harrowmont has met Sandra's preferred group of human shields
That means we can use this scene to identify all of them with a Crown question, then trawl social media and University sites for contact information and addresses.

Time is currently 2.30-3AM.

4 hours between 3AM and 7AM is enough time to look over social media.
Then we can start making more phone calls from our bleach-ice bathtub at 7AM, when people should be waking up and more receptive to strange people making phone calls.

Fair.
I would have thought that given their repeated proximity to magic users, she would want immunity.
Still, fair. She might prioritize other things.

Or even just want to avoid breaking her cover by accidentally being immune to magic.

Discussion is ongoing and it is almost midnight for me. Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to get that second update today. Maybe I can get one done in the morning tomorrow so you guys can have the time to vote.

Thinking about ritual stuff like this, we could actually Batman the hell out of this in the future:
Form of the Hearth (2 pt. Form Element)
This Element can only be incorporated into Fascinations.
The Exalt touches a building or a spot of land about the size of a family home or a local
playground when summoning the Splendor. It exists as an enchantment cast over the entire
structure or a small defined outdoors area ("the gazebo and the area right around it"). The
Splendor is coded with conditions and instructions on how to interact with the affected region.
Root Elements such as Beautiful Lie (see p. XX) can then go to work upon any valid target in the
area. Realizing that there's something weird about the enchanted area requires a Perception +
Awareness roll against difficulty (4 + Splendor's rating).
If this is the only Form Element a Splendor has, the difficulty of rolls to resist it are lowered by
one, and it manifests in the form of a feature that would make sense in the environment (a table
in a house) but is slightly out of date or out of fashion.
Invincible Assertion (3 pt. Root Element)
This Splendor defines a rigid certainty and imposes it upon existence.
When used in an Adornment, define a specific roll of (Attribute) + (Ability) and a specialty that
it falls under. When the user makes such a roll, she cannot botch and cannot fail regardless of the
difficulty. No matter what, she always generates at least one success. If this roll is opposed by
another character, Invincible Assertion instead adds two bonus successes.
When used in a Fascination, define a specific roll of (Attribute) + (Ability) and a specialty that it
falls under. Under circumstances defined by the Splendor, such rolls cannot fail in its presence,
and always generate at least one success. If such a roll is opposed, it adds two bonus successes.
This Element may be incorporated into a Splendor more than once.
Mystic Fortification (1 pt. Mystic Element)
One of the Splendor's snares or benefits is particularly wicked or potent. Modify one roll
associated with the Splendor by increasing or decreasing its difficulty by two, or modify one
value associated with activating or resisting its effects (such as the number of points of
Willpower that must be spent to shake off a Beautiful Lie) by two.
X2

This splendor is less of a physical thing than it is a tangible presence, countless ever shifting adjustments to the world made for the sole purpose of enhancing the sorcery of those within it's domain.

When manifest its most obvious physical sign is word scrawled near the center of the home sized space it occupies. Typically it takes the form of appropriate graffiti, crude scratches, coincidental patterns in a scorch mark, and similar detritus.

Whatever its shape the mark will always appear to be something that had been present in the scene, unnoticed until the splendor was activated. At its close the mark will simply seem to become impossible to find, lost in the pattern of what was already present.

Easily dismissed though it may seem, a closer read will reveal it to be a fraction of a name - a half remembered echo of sublime perfection that improves all that it touches.

Mechanics:
It is impossible to botch or fail int+occult checks within the Rite Spot, always generating at least one success regardless of difficulty. All such rolls are also made at -4 difficulty, as the world ties itself in knots to facilitate acts of arcane significance.

In the case of an opposed roll they additionally gain 2 bonus successes.

Form of Crackling Fire (1 pt. Form Element)
The Splendor takes the form of something that is hot, or brightly-colored, or energetic. It might
be decorated with flame-like markings, it might actually be on fire, or it might simply be a free-
standing flame which does not burn its owner. This Element defines the Splendor's physical
form and gives it a character, and that character is aligned with the elemental power of fire.
Other Elements may draw upon this fact.
The Splendor cannot be burned. As an Adornment, it lowers the difficulty for its user to soak
damage from heat or fire by two, or allows them to soak their Stamina to soak such damage if
they're not normally able. As the basis for a Fascination, it may generate the creator's choice of:
sufficient warmth to provide protection from freezing weather; sufficient light to see for
(Splendor's rating) x 10 yards around the Splendor; or may be literally ablaze with the intensity
of a bonfire.
Form of Gentle Water (1 pt. Form Element)
The Splendor takes the form of something that is elegant, or fluid, or wet. It could be decorated
with patterns of waves, or depictions of fish. It might contain liquid. Its colors might be washed-
out or sea-hued. This Element defines the Splendor's physical form and gives it a character, and
that character is aligned with the elemental power of water. Other Elements may draw upon this
fact.
The Splendor cannot be damaged by immersion, and it floats or sinks regardless of its natural
properties of buoyancy according to whatever would be most convenient to its owner. As an
Adornment, it allows its user to breathe underwater. As the basis for a Fascination, it may
generate the creator's choice of: thick fog banks; a gentle but steady rain; a light snowfall;
changes in the way a nearby body of water flows or behaves.
Form of Steadfast Earth (1 pt. Form Element)
The Splendor takes the form of something that is solid and durable and sturdy. It might be made
of stone, metal, or mineral deposits. It might be a crystal or gemstone. It might be dirty and
roadworn. This Element defines the Splendor's physical form and gives it a character, and that
character is aligned with the elemental power of earth. Other Elements may draw upon this fact.
The Splendor is extremely rugged, and the first attempt to damage or destroy it in any scene
automatically fails. As an Adornment, it grants its user one extra die of soak. As the basis for a
Fascination, it may generate the creator's choice of: useful tools for a certain kind of work; an
aura of quiet and serenity; periodic foreboding tremors in the earth.
Form of Graceful Winds (1 pt. Form Element)
The Splendor takes the form of something that is graceful, or cold, or crackles with electricity, or
is marked with decorations evocative of winds and clouds. It might be made of ice. This Element
defines the Splendor's physical form and gives it a character, and that character is aligned with
the elemental power of air. Other Elements may draw upon this fact.
The Splendor cannot be harmed by wind, cold, or electricity. As an Adornment, increases its
user's basic movement speed, before any multiplication by Charms or other powers, by
(Splendor's rating) yards per turn. As the basis for a Fascination, it may generate the creator's
choice of: clear skies; specific constant (nonviolent) behavior of the wind (blowing north to
south at a brisk but not dangerous speed, for example); or specific whimsical behaviors of the
wind (whisking away people's hats, bookmark, or other loose items and depositing them next to
the Splendor, for example).
Emptiness (3 pt. Root Element)
This Element does nothing at all. It is used to construct subtle or particular Splendors which
focus on mystic elements without forcing the involvement of a powerful Root.
The Splendor gains one extra point to spend on Mystic Elements.
Sovereign Elemental Sway (1 pt. Mystic Element)
The Splendor manipulates and reshapes that which resonates with its character, as defined by
Form Elements such as Form of Crackling Fire and Form of Ash and Dust. The benefits
provided depend on whether the Splendor is an Adornment or Fascination, and on which Form or
Forms it has incorporated.
Incorporated into an Adornment, this Element allows the Exalt to use Craft actions to sculpt
wind, water, and fire as though they were clay, creating impossible works of art or short-lived
elemental tools. Living wood can be induced to grow into patterns the Exalt desires in the same
fashion, while the difficulty to work with stone or metal is reduced by two. The difficulty to craft
dead flesh into Arcana may be reduced by two as well. The Exalt can raise or lower the Gauntlet
by one degree per success on a Crafts roll to modify it, and can rework the chimerical identity of
things.
Incorporated into a Fascination, this Element allows the Splendor to rewrite the details of
landscapes and objects, rerouting the paths of a graveyard, changing the appearance of a corpse,
repairing a rundown wooden shack, or making a barren landscape green and verdant.
This fascination manifests as slim metal rod precisely etched with incredibly tiny tunes. A knowledgeable scholar capable of reading Old Realm would recognize them as an odd writ of nobility; precisely defining the authority of its bearer over the four elements and calling them to heed it in the name of its maker.

Mechanics:
The bearer of this fascination gains the authority to shape any element of the world around themselves associated with earth, air, fire, or water alone or in combination.

The latter one is speculative, but it seems to me that a scepter granting authority over the elements and giving it to a wizard could end energetically. Perfectly arranging the environment to support their ritual work would be entry level stuff.

I will remind people not to split the party in hostile territory.

That's assuming she shaves her head on the spot, and age of the foci matters to any use case we have other than the crown.

See Lord Raith, who had immunity to mortal magic.
I still think the idea that someone passing as a mundane is unlikely to have super investments or that every faction has easy access to the same set of buffs.

The buff Raith got is a high water mark on bullshit, but he was also the only one of their servants who had it in canon. That should inform how common we assume that sort of ability is.

The moment she saw a White Council wizard in the war party that came to Vegas and her attempted ambushes failed, she could have grabbed a razor and shaved herself, then burnt the hair. Shower, then dip in river.
I mean, didnt take Binder more than 30 minutes or so

It wont stop the Crown, mind.
But mundane magic? Almost certainly.

I think an agent provocateur as apparently senior and trusted as Marling would have the option.
But the QM has said she might have different priorities in what she went for, so who knows.

Summer Knight did demonstrate that you dont need to be completely immune to mortal magic to be resistant to it; one of Aurora's entourage, the Sidhe lord Talos who used a glamor to appear as an ogre Grum, repeatedly shrugged off Harry's magic at the time. Plus, the grendelkin in Heorot was also resistant to Dresden's magic.

When we saw her last she hadn't, and that was after she knew enough to arrange a hit.

Binder only did that because he knew Harry had taken a sample. People aren't all playing a perfect game on this sort of thing.

I think you dramatically overestimate how cost effective, stealthy, and easy to apply such enhancements are.

We see the outsiders do it once, for a two millennia old vampire leading a court perfectly suited for their infiltration operations at an unnamed price.

The other examples also tend to be singular and more of a problem for Harry than they necessarily would be for a wizards of a different build. Listens-To-Wind for example could shape shift into his enhanced animal forms and largely ignore magic attenuating defenses.

If it was simple, easy, and effective the outsiders would be doing it everywhere. They're not even using them when sending people to specifically assassinate wizards, which indicates that something is stopping them from doing it for even well placed and valuable pawns.

I'm not going to say it's impossible, but taking it for granted is ridiculous.

Why wait until working hours? We should go now, at night. Less of a chance to get noticed. Mundane security is meaningless because Harry can veil. So, go now, at night, look through the documents, etc.

That's when we're fully healed. General consensus seems to be that we don't want to head into the climax with half our health track full.

Why this question? Details of Sandra's plans are more important, I feel.
1) They are all sources of information and potential foci for what Sandra was doing with them/in their company
She wasnt hanging out with them for better grades, after all.

2)Harrowmont outright tells us that there was a spike in student mental breakdowns.
Orpheus was an illusionist/oneiromantic AND alchemist.
I dont know how Orpheus and Sandra tie into this, but Im sure there's a connection there.

Which tells us how she's trying to do this thing, and how far she's gotten.
Why wait until working hours? We should go now, at night. Less of a chance to get noticed. Mundane security is meaningless because Harry can veil. So, go now, at night, look through the documents, etc.
1)We are currently at 7/15HP and -1 wound penalty. And its currently around 3AM.
We need 5 hours of healing to eliminate the wound penalty(12/15), and 8 hours to heal up completely.
That takes us into late morning/noon.

We want a full health bar. Just in case.

2) Harry can veil as well in the middle of the day as he can in the middle of the night. And can fry security cameras to boot.
Besides, Molly both has Anonymity Through Propriety and has the social Excellencies to literally talk security guards to open the door for her. Time of day is not the issue.

3) 13th January 2007 is a Saturday.
There will be people on campus, but its not a normal work day.

The less the has to veil against, the lower are the chances of someone seeing past it.

Not so much that Molly should literally go back out with unhealed damage.
We dont need the dice penalties.

And like I said, Saturday on campus.
Aint nobody hanging around the offices to ask you questions besides the odd security person. And at the labs, anyone there will be doing their own work

LightLan's vote is different from the cumulative Yog vote.
So I'll do two tallys, one without collation, and one with.
