Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

Arc 10 Post 45: Gifts to the Kindly
Gifts to the Kindly

27th of December 2006 A.D.

One might be forgiven for thinking that you got into the spirits business on the third day of Christmas. For the Lady and the Queen of Winter you're thinking of a bottle of Arctic Absinthe, a spirit fermented from fresh Ascetic's Root and those few lightless plants of the waste that are edible to people with a humanoid metabolism, not that you doubt Mab's ability to digest far harsher fare, but it is the spirit of the thing. Damn it, you just punned in your own head. To make yourself feel better you swirl the sample in the glass and note the liquid almost seems to contain a trapped aurora borealis. It's supposed to taste cold if that is not just advertising. One way to know for sure. In one quick motion you drain the cup.

"Woah," you exhale sharply. It tastes cold though it does not feel it, almost like mint, if you could refine the freshness of it thousandfold and replace and add a kick like sparks of lightning dancing on the tongue that settle into a subtle heat. Definitely novel enough without being so precious as to look like you are fishing for more boons. Two is plenty.

Together with a jar of milk and honey to pay off the messengers you hand both bottles to one of the eldest malks of Chapalu's kindred assured that they will get to where they are meant to go in good time. There aren't many things that can stir a cat into prompt action, but the thought of Mab's ire at being left waiting for a gift, even so small as this, is one of them. And maybe they are a touch worried about me as well, you admit, a little proud, a little worried and altogether next year's thought.

After passing Thomas his wine and Lydia her new shoes —good thing you had not gone for wine there as well, apparently 'ghosts can throw a hell of a party when the mood strikes them'— you consider the other gift left in the proverbial basket, Bright Brandy. Traditionally distilled from the shock-fruit of the near forests, it undergoes a natural form of electrochemical fermentation over a fivefold distilling process. At the end of it the wine posesses a cloudy white color, forking yellow streaks form and break apart as it moves, giving a false sense of depth. Supposedly it has a sweet and tangy taste, it crackles in the mouth and leaves a tingling numbness going down. You are not really in the mood for more tasting right now. Unlike the Winter Court you have no low-ranking contacts in Summer, in truth you do not have contacts at all.

The only time you had laid eyes on Seelie Fey was last July, when when you had met Lilly the Summer Lady and Fix the Knight of that Court. They had been friendly enough, but a lot had changed since then: you had gotten a reputation among other things as an ally of the White Court and of Winter. Who knows, they might even know of the boons that Winter owes you by some strange faerie magic. Is being neighborly, as your dad would put it, worth being even more on Summer's radar? On the other hand there's an itch at the back of your mind. What has Summer been doing and how would they react?

What do you do?

OOC: I forgot about Porter's gift and it did not make sense to go back it in this update since Molly has a better memory than me, so instead I edited it in here. No rolls in this one.

[X] Deliver the gifts in person to the Summer Lady

If the Summer lady is so lonely in her position that Maeve was able to basically wrap her around her icey finger then we need to do something about that.

In all for avoiding further Fey entanglements of possible.

Considering our people's expertise with spirit talking I expect that they have the art of giving appropriate gifts down to a science. When Molly asked for a gift to give to a major spirit of winter it was likely a very quick look up on what to get.

Let's not force interactions with Summer on Harry, and let's get the chance to meet Lily.

Thats not something she can change fast or easily, if I understand how the Starborn thing works and Uriel's response to Harry trying the same thing with him.
I don't think that Uriel's response to that had anything to do with the starborn thing. I'm pretty sure it was just how utterly objectionable it was.

I see where you're coming from with this, and agree that we should do something about it, but consider the following:

1) The fey are curious little bastards, so giving through a third party could feasibly make them more inclined to seek us out later.

2) Making Harry's life complicated is really funny, and this would probably do that. :V

And if Harry happens to bump into the Summer Queen who burns him to ash because she is still mad at him beyond all reason?

Not to undersell the danger but, yeah, that is kind of a Tuesday for the dude...

Personally I figure a belated delivery would not be amiss. He's going to run into them at some point. *shrug*

Not while he's a guest she won't. She's going to come after him eventually, she basically can't help it because summer is as unhinged as winter in its own way, but Titania's no more capable of breaking her own rules than Mab is.
To a large extent I suspect that Titania is doing out of sight out of mind when it comes to Harry. Best not to come into her sight.

So since the purchasing turn is coming up, I think a must have is Inner Devils Unchained. We can use it to awaken people's po souls. This not only unlocks MA from Molly's world for them but also Demon Arts.

In addition, it also acts as a huge Chi reservoir and it does not have the normal downside of the Po soul trying to take over as per DragonParadox's statement.

So all in all it gives the person who has awakened it,

Black Wind which is basically Celerity but not as good as it does not add dice and what it does is generally not worth it in comparison.

Demon Shintai = Devil form similar to Molly's shintai. No new health Bar and not as good as a stat boost but grants extra skills and new abilities.

Iron Mountain = Fortitude but again rather than add dice, it reduces soak difficulty. To 2. Yeah, then it adds sux if it would reduce it below 2. So arguably better than Fortitude.

Kiai, shouting to get buffs. Not a huge fan of this one tbh.

This is on top of whatever Martial Arts available from Molly's inner world.

So yeah, getting inner darkness is a must have in the next turn.

I think a perfect defense should be higher on the list. IDU's significant changes have made it less of an issue, but I'm not really convinced about the added value by comparison. That or ATP so we can teleport without scaring people.

What have we done recently that would have benefited from it? What are we planning that needs it and isn't potentially covered by the FCF?

Just because we can find a way to make most anything useful doesn't mean it's actually an efficient use of exp.

Inner darkness plus Lash boons seems like it would be enough to turn random person on the street into super soldiers that Murphy would consider beyond the ability of SI to deal with.

I will counter this by pointing out our anti shaping defense purchase. Since we got it how many times have we used it? In all the combat we have been in, how injured has Molly gotten?

It is important, but not as much as you seem to think it.

I get paranoia combat, but perfects are expensive, conditional and finiky, especially Infernal ones. So it is not as if we can spam it. So between the Shintai Health refresh and our own ridiculous Soak dice, we are not in a rush to get it.

How about we finally get some awareness? We keep failing those checks.

The last serious combat people panicked about losing some measly health levels and popped shintai. Buy Ox-Body, if you want to avoid that again. We can buy 1 Ox-Body per Essence-Level.

For one thing if they pact with Lash they're her minions not ours. For another we aren't even giving the minions we already have guns despite a fair number possessing multiple firearm dots, nor are we proving armor/equipment of any kind.

We're also not using them for things even within their current capacity anyway. What's the value added in hypothetical better minions when we aren't exactly straining to use what we have?

We could get Lash to upgrade our Perception. Although I am more inclined to have her up our Appearance as being less intrusive seeing as Appearance is skin deep.

As for panic on losing one health level that was mostly because it meant that she could actually get though our soak. I don't know how much another Ox body would have changed the panic reation. Also I think many people just wanted to see our Kingdom Sig in action.

Our most significant combat encounter to date had two shaping attacks, failing the first would have left us cursed with -2 success on everything, including the counterspell for not being erased from existence from that outer knight.

When you need it you really need it.

As to the perfect defense, Holt was throwing around arcs ago and our opponents are just getting stronger. It's going to come up sooner rather than later.

Pact bearers are called thralls for a reason, you make a deal and become a servant of the demon. Having faith in the demon isn't just a point exchange.

As far as I can see any pact is basically selling our soul. No possible is worth it in any way.
