1 · Corpse Skin ·
The student learns how to channel unwholesome Yin energies through his flesh, which becomes pallid and corpselike. While in this state, the vampire is preternaturally resistant to damage, much like a zombie.
System: The vampire must spend at least one point of Yin to evoke this power. While using this power, the difficulties of all the vampire's Social dice pools increase by one. However, for each point of Yin spent, the vampire gains two bruised health levels. Thus, a vampire who spent two points of Yin would gain four bruised health levels, which would all have to be damaged before the vampire would drop to hurt. All Chi must be spent upon first activating the power, and a maximum of three Chi may be spent on it. Corpse Skin lasts for an entire scene.
2 · White Tiger Corpse ·
The vampire forces Yin energy into her skin and bone marrow. By doing so, the vampire renders herself transparent and effectively invisible. This power doesn't affect clothing, weapons, or other objects, though the vampire may "bleed" additional Yin onto personal possessions to render them invisible, too. Vampires using this power can occasionally be detected by the palpable chill they radiate.
System: This power costs one Yin Point to activate and lasts for a scene. By spending an additional Chi Point and three turns smearing the liquid Yin onto her possessions, she may turn them invisible.
3 · Bone Obedience ·
The Bone disciple, through selective manipulation of Chi, can cause his bone structure to calcify and grow like rock crystals. This power allows the diligent student to transform parts of his skeleton into all manner of useful tools.
System: The vampire spends Yin Chi as listed below to manifest the feature desired. Each change takes three turns to produce; the bones slowly "grow" into position. With the exception of the bone blade, all transformations last for one scene, after which they must be maintained with additional Chi expenditure. The following features may be produced:
Key(1 Chi): The vampire can form a finger, quite literally, into a skeleton key capable of opening any normal lock. This feature reduces the difficulty of appropriate Security rolls by three.
Talons : The vampire extrudes bony talons from nails or knuckles. This effect is similar to the Protean power Feral Claws. The talons inflict Strength + 2 aggravated damage.
Bone Armor (1 Chi/Point): The vampire fills his skeleton with Chi, strengthening it. For each point of Chi spent, the vampire gains one soak die. Bone armor protects against aggravated damage from supernatural attacks, but not from fire or sunlight.
Visage : The vampire uses Chi to alter his bone structure. This effect allows him to become up to six inches shorter or taller, and to alter his facial features and body type (though not precisely enough to disguise himself as someone else).
Bone Blade (2 Chi, 1 Chi/three turns to maintain): The vampire extends a section of his forearm into a two-foot blade of bone. This "sword" may be used to parry attacks and inflicts Strength + 3 aggravated damage.
4 · Five Poison Cloud ·
The vampire can exhale a breath or cloud of concentrated Yin. This cloud manifests as a mass of freezing black vapor. The cloud seethes with the destructive energies of raw Yin; within the cloud, metal corrodes, flesh rots, and plants wither and die.
System: The vampire spends two points of Yin. The cloud swells to fill an area 10 feet by 10 feet. Everyone within the cloud, except the wielder of the power, suffers six dice of aggravated damage.
5 · Ch'ing Shih ·
The vampire may permeate her flesh and bones with Yin. This precipitates a grotesque transformation: The vampire's flesh turns a sickly gray, while her bones turn jet black. Her skin wrinkles and compresses around her bones. Her fangs grow long and drip venom, and black spikes jut from her back, joints, and rib cage. Her entire body glows phosphorescently and sparks with Yin energy. This form is known as a ch'ing shih.
System: To activate the ch'ing shih form requires five turns and five points of Yin Chi. The transformation is automatic, and the effects last for one scene. All sorts of changes take place in the vampire. First, the vampire's Appearance drops to zero. The character's bones fill with Yin-marrow, and she gains near-complete control over her skeletal structure. She can extrude spikes, razored edges, or bony barbs. In game terms, she can choose to inflict automatic aggravated damage with any attack, even a body-slam or punch. She may attack and damage wraiths, specters, and other Yin-spirits (though the reverse is also true; she may be attacked as well). She may also feed her flesh and blood to such spirits, providing Chi to them; Yin-spirits who accept this "offering" can use the Chi to replenish their own Chi on a one-for-one basis. Finally, the vampire may inject a lethal toxin through her claws or fangs. This effect inflicts two health levels of aggravated damage per turn to humans or animals and one point per turn to shen, including wraiths. The toxin's effects last for (6 – victim's Stamina, minimum 1) turns. Mortals who die from this toxin rise as zombies, under the ch'ing shih's control, during the following scene. Zombies have the Physical Attributes they possessed during life, but no Mental or Social Attributes. They have three additional health levels, but are incapable of healing damage inflicted on them. Each zombie must be fed one Yin Point per night, or it withers to dust. At any rate, a zombie rots within one turn of being exposed to sunlight.
6 · Ikehone ·
Its name is a whimsical reference to the Japanese art of flower arrangement, this is the ability to rearrange a victim's flesh and bones, turning him into a distorted version of himself. While this is usually done as a form of attack, some Kuei-jin turn this power on themselves (to become stronger and tougher) or on their followers (to create powerful servants or warriors). In the more debased courts, some Kuei-jin specialize in using Ikehone as an art form; captives' bones and flesh are transformed into "artistically pleasing" shapes to amuse other Cathayans before the victim is consumed.
System: The Kuei-jin touches the victim as the player spends two points of Yin Chi and rolls Manipulation + Crafts (difficulty 6). If successful, the Kuei-jin may alter the subject's Attributes by up to six points. Thus, he could subtract two dots from three Attributes, increase one Attribute by two dots, and one by four, and so forth. No Attribute may be reduced below 1 or increased above 5. these changes are accompanied by appropriate physical changes as well: A victim whose Appearance is decreased becomes a twisted, wretched wreck; one whose Strength or Stamina is increased becomes huge and impossibly muscular; one whose Dexterity is decreased becomes wizened and palsied. If the power is used as an attack, Attributes are typically decreased. If used on the Kuei-jin himself or one of his allies or servants, Attributes are increased. The changes last for one scene, plus one hour per additional point of Yin Chi expended. Only Physical Attributes and Appearance may be manipulated in this fashion. Ikehone has no effect on beings that lack skeletons.
7 · Skeletal Sculpting · [ Kindred of the East Companion — Page 77 ]
A Refined form of Ikehone, and not dissimilar to the ancient Kin-jin Discipline called Vicissitude, this power allows a Kuei-jin to affect another character's bones without similarly affecting the attached flesh — except, perhaps, to rend and tear it. Like Ikehon, Skeletal Sculpting is sometimes regarded as a form of arm by more degenerate Kuei-jin. It's also often used as a form of torture.
System: The Kuei-jin touches the victim and the player spends a point of Yin Chi and rolls Manipulation + Crafts (difficulty 7). For each success, he does one health level of aggravated damage to the victim as his bones tear out of their sockets, turn at right angles to themselves, and warp and rip their way through his body. Any extra health levels gained through various powers, Merits, etc. are ignored for purposes of Skeletal Sculpting. Alternately, instead of doing damage, the Kuei-jin may choose to inflict other debilities on the victim. Skeletal Sculpting has no effect on beings that lack skeletons.
1 success: Arthritis: The victim's bones and joins become extremely painful, even when not being moved. The victim is at -2 Dexterity, though he can overcome this effect for one scene by spending a temporary Willpower Point.
2 successes: Severe Arthritis: Double the penalties and temporary Willpower cost listed above.
3 successes: Brittle Bones: The character's bones become extremely frail. Every hit he suffers that does physical damage breaks at least one, causing one point of lethal damage per broken bone. Furthermore, every time the character has to make a roll using any Physical Attribute, he must roll Stamina (difficulty 8) or break one of the bones involved in the activity.
4 successes: Blood Rot: The Kuei-jin inflicts his victim with an extremely potent, rapid-acting form of blood infirmity. The victim spends a week in intense pain before dying, losing one point from each Physical Attribute per day until reaching zero. Conventional medicine offers no cure for this affliction; advanced Disciplines, such as Adjust The True Balance, may or may not cure Blood Rot, at the Storyteller's discretion.
8 · Corpse Awakening ·
Corpse Awakening is a form of Kuei-jin necromancy. It allows a Cathayan to invest a corpse with Chi (in a crude fashion), thus creating a sort of zombie that will follow his orders as best it can. "Living dead" created by Corpse Awakening are neither powerful nor intelligent (except in rare cases), but are usually suitable servants for at least some tasks.
System: The Kuei-jin must first obtain a corpse, which he takes to a graveyard at midnight. There he lays the corpse on a specially prepared reed mat. (Creating this mat requires an appropriate Dexterity + Crafts test by the Kuei-jin or the person hired to make it for him.) The Kuei-jin performs an elaborate ceremony, involving incense, candles, and written and spoken prayers. During this ceremony, the Kuei-jin infuses the corpse with a minimum of 2 Yin Chi and 2 Yang Chi and the player rolls Intelligence + Rituals (difficulty 7). After the ceremony, the corpse is wrapped in the mat and buried for eight nights. If the ceremony was successful, at the end of the eighth day, the corpse comes to "life" and digs itself free; its creator had best be there to take charge of it, lest it wander away on its own. The corpse, now known as a s&0236;zou, possesses 1 dot in each Attribute, plus an additional dot in its Physical and Mental Attributes for every additional Yin Chi and Yang Chi that the Kuei-jin "gave" if during the ceremony. (Thus, if the Kuei-jin invested 3 Yin and 3 Yang in his potential creation, the s&0236;zou would have 2 dots in all Physical and mental Attributes, and 1 dot in all Social Attributes.) A s&0236;zou's Social Attributes can't be increased beyond 3 dots, no matter how much additional Chi is spent. A s&0236;zou has a normal health level track. A s&0236;zou is under its creator's command, and will do whatever it's told to do to the best of its intelligence and ability. However, it loses one health level per night unless fed an additional point of Yin Chi and Yang Chi. If its health level ever drops to Incapacitated for any reason, it crumbles to dust.
9 · Form Of Infernal Favor ·
This power, like the lesser power Ch'ing Shih, floods the Kuei-jin's body with Yin energies, transforming it into a horror that makes even the Ch'ing Shih pale in comparison. Although the changes vary from manifestation to manifestation and from Kuei-jin to Kuei-jin, typically the character becomes much larger (both taller and broader). His teeth and nails distend into black fangs and claws that are coated with a slimy poison, his skin takes on terrifying hues (typically red or black), spikes and tentacles sprout from his body, and so forth.

System: Transforming into the infernal form requires no roll, but does take eight turns and requires the expenditure of four points of Yin and/or Demon Chi. The effects last for one scene (and possibly longer, at the Storyteller's discretion). While in Infernal Form, the character may choose any five Demon Shintai Characteristics to represent his demonic body and its powers. In addition, all of the character's Physical Attributes increase by two. Otherwise, the effects are identical to Ch'ing Shih.
