"Are you sure this is a good idea?"
"Well, she does seem to like Vita, so I'm sure she'll hold back. And I'll be out there with them, so if she does try anything, it'll be two on one," Nanoha said as she looked down the road, watching for the coming headlights in the twilight. Beside her, Fate sighed in exasperation.
"Nanoha, that's not what I meant," she said. "This whole ... shutting down of everything. Even if Flandre doesn't notice that no one's around when they should be, whoever is bringing her will, and if she finds out, she could cause problems." Nanoha smiled at her.
"Oh, she might - or she might think about how nice it is of us to have cleared out all the distractions so she could have a pleasant time. Or she might even expect it. And maybe bringing more people might make her impulsiveness stand out, and she'll try to attack someone when she gets excited. Or she might just not care, so long as she gets to have her fun." She shrugged. "We don't know enough about her, really, and probably never will."
"Yeah." Fate frowned. "Not until her sister decides to finally come rescue her, anyway." The headlights of an approaching car flashed in the distance, and Nanoha sighed.
"Well, I guess it's time. Remember - don't put up any defenses unless she decides to enter the building."
"I know, Nanoha ... take care of yourself."
"Of course I will, Fate. You can count on me!" She waved her friend into the building, then turned to face the car. "Vita, are you ready?"
"As ready as I'll ever be. Let's get this over with," the reply came, and Nanoha chuckled at the mental tone.
Before the car finished moving, a childish figure dressed in brown hopped out, hovering in the air as she looked around. After a moment, she drifted over to Nanoha and rose to meet her face to face, red eyes glittering. "Hey, where's Vita?"
"She's waiting at the Simula-" She sighed and walked over to the car as Flandre took off through the air toward the waiting Vita. "How are you doing, Lieutenant Tarbin? Is she getting along with everyone?" The young woman took a deep breath before replying.
"Not particularly, no - she's arrogant and terrifying. But we tolerate her, because the Major believes it's for the best." Her voice trembled just a bit, and she never looked up from the ground. "But she does usually follow instructions ... and makes sure to tell us when she isn't going to. So she'll wait until we get there." She waited until Nanoha finally nodded and walked toward the Simulator.
"Alright, you two," Nanoha said as they reached the diminutive knight and vampire, who both turned to look at her. "The rules are simple; no time limit, nothing lethal, keep your attacks within the simulated area, and the match ends when one side is in a dominant position. Any questions?" Two heads shook in unison, and the magically-created city sprang into existence behind them. "Then get to your positions." Vita nodded and took off for the northern part of the city after her Barrier Jacket formed around her. Flandre simply giggled and flew toward the southern end. Nanoha frowned and glanced at the Lieutenant. "She doesn't have a Device yet?"
"She got one yesterday; I understand it shattered after maintaining a Barrier Jacket for less than a minute. She came back ... very, very upset." Nanoha nodded and waited for the two combatants to reach their places.
"Ready, and ... start!"
"Start!" Vita flew forward and drifted left, keeping the vampire in sight the whole time. Not a difficult task, because she wasn't making any attempt at evading or rushing forward to get into attack range. Vita snorted - that was fine with her. She could see that the vampire wasn't wearing a Barrier Jacket, though she did have that twisted wand out ... not that that would matter. Even with the Limiters active, she had taken a Cartridge-enhanced Raketenhammer, and if it had crushed her rib cage, she was fine minutes later. Vita knew what to expect. She swept her arm in front of her three times, and a dozen orbs flared into existence as Graf Eisen burned a cartridge.
"Schwalbefliegen!" She swung the hammer, then rushed after the hurtling projectiles. If she could just distract her long enough to get that weapon away from her .... She froze, staring, then shook herself and flew upward, trying to open the range.
Flandre hadn't tried to dodge any of the projectiles - instead, she'd simply tilted her head, smiled, and used Laevateinn to bat away three of the four that could actually hit her. The fourth she caught in her teeth, head snapping back, then spat it out and grinned madly. Her eyes flared as she hurled herself upward at the red-clad knight. She spiraled through the darkening sky in pursuit, her attacks barely deflected by a summoned shield or the flashing hammer.
Suddenly, Vita spun and dove, attempting to outspeed the giggling vampire and lose her in the twisting and fallen buildings. She realized her mistake almost immediately as red bullets began falling around her, splashing off her defenses. Individually, the shots were nowhere near as powerful as they would need to be to overwhelm her; even by the dozen they could be managed. These shots were coming thicker than that, unaimed and unguided, simply flung in a cone toward the target - and worse than the damage being done was the fact that Vita was rapidly losing track of where she was in the scarlet storm. She saw a flash to her right - a window - and hurled herself sideways, crashing through the glass and rolling to her feet, spinning to face the windows.
The storm of bullets ended as Flandre rolled over above the building Vita had taken shelter in and powered through the roof to reach her - and the floor below it, and the next two floors. She giggled at how close she'd come - sixty centimeters behind Vita, a floor above - and threw herself through the windows when she heard the crash of glass above her. Her wand came forward, skewering Vita's shield with ease, and her free hand caught the descending hammer by the head. She grinned at Vita, then threw the hammer back, staggering the knight. She lunged forward barehanded and caught Vita in a hug, swinging her around like a doll.
"Well, I think that qualifies as a win for Flandre," Nanoha said, startling the vampire into letting go as a communication screen appeared near them. Recovering quickly, she giggled happily.
"Of course! Hey, can we have another match? That was fun, but I wanna play some more," she said. The screen split as Lieutenant Tarbin joined the conversation.
"I'm afraid that is impossible; the Major only approved on match," she said, and Flandre's grin turned to a scowl. She locked her gaze on the Lieutenant for a moment, eyes shining.
"... Fine, then I'm going to fly back," she said as the Lieutenant shook her head.
"Also impossible, and you know the reasons why," she said. Flandre's glare grew even more vicious, a growl rose in the back of her throat, and her left hand began twitching convulsively, as though she were trying to squeeze something. Then, as if a switch had been flipped, her demeanor changed.
"Okay, I'll be right there!" She grinned and giggled, then caught Vita in another hug. "Hehe, you have to get better, Vita - and the next time we play, don't hold back, okay? We can have more fun that way!"
