Finding the Spark (Pathfinder 1E Quest)

"So each of you trusted your arm more than me on two feet?" He grimaces, looking down. "Can't say I blame you given now we met and you knowing each other for years."
Poor Urgor, that was not reasoning at all. We would have loved to have had his help, but didn't want to risk anyone else falling asleep in middle of fight.

Hope he realizes we value him as a trusted ally if not friend yet.
"Surely there is time for a halt in Fusil to set an ear to the ground," the sellsword captain offers delicately as he may.

"Surely we should inform the whole town of our purpose and the fey-things that guard their borders beside," the mage scoffs. "Having reached shore lets not drown in the surf captain. We made for the star-fall."
Gavhaul continues not making friends.

As for town, @Goldfish can we send in Cob, for his sneakiness, and Pepper, cause cat that no one will look twice out, to scout out for rumors and such like we did back in other town?

With right spells and new equipment, Cob will near impossible to spot after all.

That's right, Urgor. Friendship is magic! 🤓

I think it's worth attempting to do some recon in the town. With Cob's new cloak, his Stealth bonus is +32, with another +2 from Mina's Heroism spell. That's getting awfully close to the +40 bonus someone benefits from when under the effects of an Invisibility spell. Add Sirim for magical support and better information gathering skills, plus his own very high Stealth skills and abilities, and they make a formidable pair of spies. Pepper is pretty damned sneaky, too, but he's also a cat, so he can just cat around the place listening for rumors and stuff.

As for the loot, I think the Hedge Wizard Cloak should go to Kori, though there isn't any reason a different party member couldn't wear it sometimes. Everyone else has Cloaks of Resistance, though, so they're not going to want to make a permanent swap. This is why Kori should get the Druidcraft Talisman, too, since Resistance bonuses don't stack and it won't provide a bonus to anyone else in the party. It's not as good as a Cloak of Resistance, but it's better than nothing.

The Scoundrel's Cloak is best for Cob, IMO, but just like the Hedge Wizard Cloak, it we might want to swap them around sometimes.

I didn't realize Cob isn't proficient with longbows, so the bow should go to Gorok, along with the pendant, since he can use both. Even if the bow is too small to use comfortably. @DragonParadox, I've never considered this before, but is a Small-sized longbow basically the equivalent of a Medium-sized shortbow? Mechanically, it should work based on damage and having shortbow range rather than that of a longbow makes sense given its smaller size. Speaking of the bow, what is its strength rating? +1, like it's Enhancement bonus?

[X] Go into town
-[X] Cob, Sirim, and Pepper
--[X] Mina casts Heroim on Cob before he departs, and Sirim hides in Cob's cloak for most of the trip.
--[X] Cob will wear the Scoundrel's Cloak for this mission rather than his Cloak of Resistance.
--[X] Pepper goes in separately from Cob and Sirim. He sneaks around when necessary, but otherwise just leans into being a cat.

[X] Loot Distribution
-[X] Kori: Cloak of the Hedge Wizard, Druidcraft Talisman
-[X] Cob: Scoundrel's Cloak

@Goldfish would casting Path Without a Trace on Cob and Pepper be out of question just for extra surety they aren't caught?

And can Gorok even use a small longbow? Feels like it would suit Cob's stature more, even if not suited for it.

Keep in mind that DP has always handled this as an IC-matter.

Cob can, presuably, learn to work with a longbow over time without feat-investment?

I asked him the same, it can be used as a Shortbow by a medium creature.

That does make sense yeah. I mean one could rule that using an undersized weapon should impose some kind of penalty, but logically there are only so many ways to make a bow that does its job and this is just a matter of size so small longbow = medium shortbow is sensible.

He can, yeah.

I'm very glad we got another Fungal Stun Vial. The other stuff is nice, too, but those vials are lifesavers.
Indeed, and we got more spending money too.
Coin
342 gp 7 sp 21 cp
Add the 400 out of the 500 the thieving party was carrying, according to plan, we have a nice healthy 742 gold.

Curious, @Goldfish would it be worth making Cob a Swashbuckler 1 to take advantage of vanish ability of cloak? Like idea of him randomly disappearing in middle of fights, only to appear stabbing someone.

Not really. Swashbucklers use Charisma as a key attribute. It's what determines their Panache resource, but Cob has a CHA of 8, so taking a level dip to get just one point of Panache would be very wasteful.

Even taking the Amateur Swashbuckler feat would not be very good for him because of his low Charisma.

I wanted Cob to select the necessary Talents that would allow him to use Vanish as an SLA, but the thread was pretty dead set against him having any innate magical abilities during character creation.

We have multiple party members able to cast Invisibility, however, and we'll eventually be able to find him an item he can use for on demand Invisibility.

I still think that Cob should get Detect Magic from the Cloak of the Hedge Wizard, and access to True Strike.
Give Gorok the Scoundrel's cloak since he's going out scouting each day, and would probably benefit from higher stealth.

I don't know any long lasting level 1/level 2 buffs Kori can give via shadow enchantment, Sirim might want to cast Investigative Mind on himself if he thinks he might run into knowledge checks? (Honestly, I just want to use the spell)

(I think we have spare cloaks of resistance + 1 with us? If we go out with other people for another mini adventure before we get a chance to sell them, I'd like to remember to lend them out to whomever's with us).

Investigative Mind isn't a good option for Sirim scouting out the town. He can still use it if an opportunity arises, but I think it's better to leave the Shadow Enchantment spell open for now. That gives him more options, depending on what they find in the town.

We don't have spare Cloaks of Resistance. If Cob doesn't wear his, for instance when he's wearing the Scoundrel's Cloak or Hedge Wizard Cloak, then Kori could wear it in his place. The Scoundrel's Cloak isn't a good match for Gorok, especially when he's scouting. Warty and Sirim are with him during those times, so stealth isn't going to do much. Warty is not the sneaky sort of frog monster. Also, when he's out scouting the Resistance bonus from his cloak is probably going to be more useful.

For once I think we've had enough of side adventures.

Gavhaul is right in one regard, anyone waiting for the caravan to pass would be keeping an eye on Fusil with the expectation it would stop there.

[x] Stay with the caravan, you're too likely to draw the wrong kind of attention

I don't think the info gathering group will sidetrack us. I'm hoping for news that might give us a hint about whether or not confused Azlanti might have showed up in the area recently. We're close enough to the arrival point for the stasis pods that one or more of them may have wandered through here trying to get their bearings.

It's also a chance to learn if nearby Fey have been getting frisky.

I think that it is really important to know about the rest of the Azlanti survivors. They have very valuable knowledge, it would be wonderful if we could recruit them.

Arc 8 Post 19: Musing and Mystery
Musing and Mystery

3rd of Neth 4707 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

It's beginning to get hard to tell when Cob is invisible and when he's 'just hiding'. Gavis' cloak is put to good use, 'loosing' a goblin in the shadows, not that anyone in the caravan is trying to find him all that hard. The Surefoot dwarves are willing to take Urgor's word that this is 'a good 'un', even if they aren't going to be sharing their plump helmet stew with him, and the mercenaries are too morose at missing the chance at civilization to do more then grumble on the march. About the only ones who seem to be happy at the moment are the horses since the trees around here are even taller and more vigorous than along the Old River Road, great oaks and ashwoods so large they could hold one of the smaller Burnlander houses in their leafy embrace and consequently leaving wide swaths of the forest floor free of undergrowth, but not of the nuts of those very trees which they seem to find delicious.

Cob Stealth: 1d20+33 = 48 (Success!?)

"Ain't never seen horses do that, Morn," one of the dwarves turns to another, so alike in stature and the color of their beards you guess them to be close cousins if not brothers. "You?"

"Now where would I have seen horses eat magic acorns, ye nincompoop? Grew up in the Bellows, didn't I? Apprenticed to Great-Uncle Alf, didn't I..." It goes on for a while, a kind of complaining so deep and wide-ranging in its familiarity it wraps back around to being a mark of fondness. Not for the first time you wonder what it must be like to have that, like a stone wall at your back, always there to lean on.

Truth be told you do not think any of the People do, not unless those of far off New Calignas were raised much different than you are accustomed to. In the Hall the young were called on to show cunning and leadership, to trust only the trustworthy and deceive the gullible, so might 'the best be known among the rest'.

Looking back at it with the eyes of the present day, it was an excellent way to ensure that the tribe never suffered the kind of ruinous losses that the xulgath or the shesh did, raiders looking to themselves when plans unraveled, but just as readily it made it so the tribe could never take full advantage of good fortune, of the seasons when the fish were bountiful or when a titan spider had died in a rockfall, most of its meat harvested by the clan.

A way to survive, not to thrive, shaped, you suspect, by the grim times of the Descent, though that does make you wonder: Why hadn't anything changed since? The Taldans had built a great empire and seen it crumble, the Varisians had settled in Ustalav, been driven out by the Whispering Tyrant, and then reclaimed much of the land they had lost. Of all the realms you heard of since coming up to the surface of the world, the fate of the Caligini most resembles Nidal, trapped under its veil of grey. But that, Sirim had made clear, was the work of the Midnight Lord. So then what was keeping your people in thrall? Was it just hunger and want, never making enough to think past next season's hunt and the one after that, or was it some subtle curse hurled at the survivors by the legions of the untimely dead?

"Kori," Mina grabs your arm, looking suddenly pale. "I think someone made Pepper pop... I can't feel him anymore, not the same way I usually do. He's still with me, but I have to sleep to dream him up in this world again. Do you think Cob's in trouble too?"

[] Yes, someone should go check on him
-[] You
-[] Gorok
-[] Both of you

[] No, you trust Cob, even in the face of unforeseen peril, stick with the caravan

[] Write in

OOC: And done. The roll was just to give you an impression of how Stealthy Cob was this time around, as that is something Kori would notice and it might impact the vote. Do you think something could have beaten that, or that he might have encountered a situation in which he broke stealth at the wrong time, etc...

Pathfinder lore would be that they are mostly serving and being manipulated by Owbs, and possibly their shadowy masters.

Is that not the case in your worldbuilding, or is it just unknown to Kori?

Crap...

I'm confident that there are few situations Cob and Sirim couldn't get out of, if it came down to it, but anything can happen.

Before we do anything else, we should find out what happened to Pepper.

[X] Mina will use her Slumber Hex on herself, willingly failing to resist the effect. Once she is asleep, Kori will wake her so that she can recreate Pepper in order to learn what happened in the town. If Cob or Sirim is in trouble, Kori, Gorok, and Mina will all go help.

Since Pepper was relying on the fact he looks like a normal cat mostly for stealth, could be something killed him just for that.

I doubt Cob with his stealth ability and Sirim with his intangibility would have gotten caught or be in the same danger, so best to figure out just how Pepper was killed first before assuming worst.

For all we know he got accidently crushed by a falling crate or something after all.

Some form of long-ranged communicate magic would be nice in the future if that is a thing at all in Pathfinder.

Pepper shouldn't have a magical aura, I think.

So either she was hit because something noticed Cob or Sirim and she was with them, or it was random and someone killed a cat.
Of course, third way is that Pepper revealed herself somehow by acting smarter than a cat should?

There is one other discernible way in which Pepper is unlike a cat, he counts as a summoned creature.

I guess, but unless she randomly wandered into an AMF or hit her head on a Magic Circle that seems unlikely to be relevant.

Guess I'll have to look some more what effects could show that.

Still, unlike a summoned creature she shouldn't have an Aura of Conjuration magic or anything like that.
