Finding the Spark (Pathfinder 1E Quest)

I think it's time we heal and de-toxify Urgor, getting our entire party back full-strength... and now with buffs.

Gavis is the one with "the mark of the Lower Planes" on him. I wonder if he is a tiefling kin to devils, and thus is worthy of Cob switching his attention. Worth a try, at least?

A tiefling does not count as a devil even if they have devil blood, that is for full on extra-planar outsiders, tieflings are native outsiders normally.

Kori is the only one who can really see Urgor right now. It would be a waste of his time to try to wake the Dwarf up right now, IMO. Urgor will be just as blinded as everyone else and he doesn't have any idea of anyone's current position.

Better for Kori to take advantage of his combat buffs and the fact that he's the only person who can see anything.

Dunno, I thought the Darkness was a temporizing move to wait out the initial incapacitation. Once we have everyone back we can turn the lights back on. Our primary damage dealers are Cob, Gorok, Urgor and Warty, and the latter two aren't doing much right now.

I think at least one more round of darkness would be best. The archer shooting arrows with that DC 19 poison on them is very dangerous.

Kori hitting them with a Burst of Radiance spell to Blind them before dropping the darkness would be ideal. They're biting going to get any of their Dexterity bonus to the Reflex save against the spell, so chances are they'll fail to resist it.

I don't think that works, casting a Light spell in magical darkness?

That shouldn't be an issue. Burst of Radiance is an instantaneous spell effect that doesn't actually act as a source of useful light that can be Dispelled or countered by ambient lighting, or the lack thereof. @DragonParadox?

RAW it should work, but it does feel kind of weird conceptually that it would have no effect casting it in higher level magical darkness. I think a chance of spell failure makes sense. Does 20% sound fair?

Fair enough.

Can you explain enemy positioning as Kori can currently see?

  1. Gavin is next to Mina after trying to grapple her
  2. The grippli is up a tree fifteen feet away from her and twenty feet from the fight between the shapeshifter Cob and Akorian
  3. The halfling is under the same tree, likely because she has good shots with her sling staff and if she gets in trouble her friend can come down the tree
  4. The shapeshifter is between Cob and Akorian who just moved into flanking position
  5. Gorok is right next to Mina
  6. Gorok's sword is halfway between where he is now and the grippli and halfling so if he wants to get it he'd have to spend his move action to get there and his standard action to pick it up

@DragonParadox, does the attack and damage bonus from Divine Favor apply to the chain attacks from Kori's Barbed Chains spell? The spells reads like it makes weapon attacks, using BAB, so that would be a nice bit of synergy.

Okay, plan updated.

Added Kori using Barbed Chains when it's his turn to act next round. With Divine Favor and Haste in effect, his CMB for the chains Trip attempt will be +13, while the Grippli and Halflings will be suffering from a -2 penalty to their AC & CMD, and they'll be denied their Dexterity bonus to CMD as well.

With those penalties, it will be very difficult for them to resist the Trip attempts (for example, if the Grippli is a 6th level Ranger with 10 STR and 20 DEX, without special spells, gear, or feats to augment it, it's CMD would be reduced to 13). And if they're tripped, they'll also need to make the DC 16 Will save to avoid being Shaken. Not to mention the effect of tripping and falling out of the tree (hopefully landing on its buddy's head).

-[X] Sirim continues to stay near Mina to give her the benefit of his magic circle. Once he can see again, he targets an eny with Shadow Enchantment to duplicate a Hold Person spell, selecting whoever seems the most threatening or likely to cause trouble for the party.
-[X] Gorok moves to attack Gavis with his claws and teeth.
--[X] As he does so, he orders Warty to move to guard his sword.
-[X] Pepper attempts to wake Urgor.
-[X] When he can next act, Kori targets the Grippli in the tree and the Halfling beneath it with his Barbed Chains spell, directing each chain to make a Trip attempt (+13 CMB) against them. He then dismisses his Deeper Darkness spell after once more alerting the party.
-[X] Once she can see again, Mina targets one or more enemies with a Glitterdust spell, preferably when she can hit more than one with it (such as the Grippli and Halfling). If she can't safely do so without also hitting an ally, she instead uses her Slumber Hex.
-[X] Cob continues to target the shapeshifter.

Interesting fight so far, glad to see the attackers are doing well.

I haven't made a full party of enemies like this for a long while, so good to see it work out at least somewhat.
I think usually @DragonParadox tends to go more for single unique foes with standard-issue sidekicks (god know Pathfinder has a lot of premade monsters), so it's nice to think in terms of what a group needs to threaten the PCs and also function within the world that is around them, rather than just one monster.

Poor Urgor. He gets Possessed, then robbed, then poisoned on this trip and we haven't even reached out destination yet. He might decide that retaking that lost Dwarven city would be better if done with him safely ensconced behind a desk, hundreds of miles away.

@DragonParadox can we do a divination to see if the expedition is cursed or something? Maybe we offended a god?

I mean you could do that, but... you are playing an oracle. Those are cursed by default :V

Arc 8 Post 16: Battle Under the Boughs
Battle Under the Boughs

3rd of Neth 4707 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

Gorok's whistle is sharp and clear among the trees, but Warty's only answer is a confused warble, wary of the unnatural dark, clear to your eyes but no other. So it is with Gorok's claws, grasping more at the foe's cloak than at him, though as he laughs at a stumble the sound gives him away, earning a shallow cut to the chest.

Gorok Handle Animal (DC 15): 1d20+8 = 12 (Failure)
Miss Chance 3d100 (DC 50) = 30, 51, 30 (Failure, Success, Failure)
Gorok Claw: 1d20+9 = 25 (Hit) -> Gavis takes 5 Damage -> Now at 39/44

The screech gives you warning, but not enough. Just as you turn your head the bat is already descending at the command of its master and it does not fear the dark... nor the steel that cuts it. Membranous wings wrap around you, rolling on the ground. Now you're as blind as anyone in this fight, all-but deafened by its shrill cries.

Is that an arrow on the ground... it must have missed, you think, good.

Handle Animal Automatic Success due to Blindsense
Dire Bat Companion Miss Chance (DC 50): 92 (Success)
Akorian AoO: 1d20+8+3 (Divine Favor) = 17 (Hit) -> Bat takes 5 Damage -> Now at 29/34
Bat to Grapple (CMD 15+5 = 20): 1d20+3 = 23 (Success)

You are Grappled
...
'Legs' the Grippli Miss Chance (DC 50) = 49 (Failure)

As Cob half stumbles into you, dagger waving into the air, the clawed woman roars. "Stop squirming you little rat!"

All you can do is hope your friend manages to keep away, kicking and elbowing you way out of the creature's unwelcome embrace to the sight of a battle in utter chaos. Another dim fungal flash illuminates the trunk of a pine tree after flying above the heads of Mina, Gorok, and Gavis as well as the still form of Urgor.

Cob Acrobatics to Avoid AoO (DC 20): 1d20+13 = 18 (Failure)
Shapeshifter Miss Chance(DC 50): 52 (Success)
Shapeshifter Claw Attack: 1d20+10 = 11 (Failure)

...
Cob Miss Chance (DC 50) = 31 (Failure)
...
Shapeshifter Miss Chance (DC 50): 9, 73 (Failure, Success)
Shapeshifter Attack: 1d20+10 = 27 (Hit) -> Cob takes 8 Damage Now at 32/40

...
Akorian to break Grapple (DC 17): 1d20+6 = 18 (Success)
...
Ellie Miss Chance (DC 50): 19 (Failure)
...
Pepper Wisdom to Wake Urgor (DC 18): 1d20+1 = 15 (Failure)
"Fall back get! Out of the cloud!" Gavis shouts as he half throws Mina against a tree and ducks under Gorok's swipes. He's telling them not to worry about him, that he can make it out. Truth be told it's strange to be fighting foes who clearly have a bond of fellowship between them, even if it is thieves trying to rob you blind.

Yet swift as he may be, magic is faster. In his wake syllables roll like thunder from Mina's lips and from her hands spring forth lightning. By the light of his now smoldering hair his fiendish blood is clear in the fine pattern of scales, almost like arcane seals, on his face.

Instead of following him, Gorok whistles to Warty again as he dashes for his fallen sword... and this time the slurk can see its target. He leaps and he lands with wet squelch.

Gavis Acrobatics (DC 20): 1d20+10 = 22 (Success)
Gavis takes the Run action -> No longer under Supernatural Darkness
Gavis Reflex Save: 1d20+6 = 21 (Success) -> Gavis takes 9-5 (Resistance) = 4 Damage -> Now at 35/44

...
Gavis AoO: 1d20+9 = 12 (Failure)
Warty Grapple (CMD 20): 1d20+9 = 26 (Success)
Gavis is now Grappled

Again the one they had called 'Legs' chooses another mark, this time Gorok, and the arrow strikes true at the base of his tail, though if anything this only seems to anger the iruxi more.

He'll have someone under that sword soon enough, you vow as you harden the shadows into steel chains to trip and to pull the halfling and archer. The air is filled with sudden screams as one slips the noose, while the other definitely doesn't.

"Lights on!" You shout as you dismiss the shadows. A moment later you realize the bat had slunk away from you and Cob, careful not to draw sword or dagger, and was now trying to get back into the air, maybe to try for another dive.

Miss Chance (DC 50): 51 (Success)
'Legs' Attack: 1d20+11 = 24 -> Gorok takes 8 Damage -> Now at 54/62
Gorok Fortitude Save vs Poison: 1d20+13 = 33 (Success) ...immune to ??? Poison for 24 hours

...
Akorian Barbed Chain vs Legs (DC 20) = 1d20+13 = 17 (Failure)
Akorian Barbed Chain vs Ellie (DC 17) = 1d20+13 = 23 (Success) -> Ellie is now Prone

"Giving up already?" the red-haired woman asks mockingly, her claws a flurry of pain and blood as she tears at your shoulders and chest, trying to get at your throat. "Would've been less painful if you'd been good little lambs!" She seems to slow for a moment, as though to dismiss a fly, but its nowhere near enough to let you get out of the way.

Lucky for you she seems to have forgotten about Cob, who reminds her of his presence in the way he knows best, with a shash to the back of the knee that almost sends her sprawling

Shifter Will Save: 1d20+4+2 (vs Enchantment) = 25 (Success)
Shifter Attacks: (2)d20+11 = 20, 27 (Hit, Hit) -> Akorian takes 18 Damage -> Now at 18/47
Cob Attack: 1d20+12 +2 (Flanking) = 30 -> Shifter takes 20 Damage Now at 17/55

Scrambling to her feet the halfling considers the field and instead of running to get as far as she can from the now armed Gorok, she instead raises her staff and flings another vial at Warty, trying to get her companion free, though the slurk proves too canny and thick-skinned both. However, the distraction is all that the now smoldering scoundrel needs to get out from the slurk.

Ellie Attack: 1d20+8 = 18 (Miss)
Pepper Wisdom (DC 16): 1d20+1 = 9 (Failure)
Gavis (CMD 24): 1d20+8 = 26 (Success)

Sparks like stars flash from Mina's hands, blazing gold even from where you are standing, enough to blind one of your foes at least... a pity it's the least dangerous one. For a moment it looks like Gorok is heading that way to make their day even worse... and he'd probably intended to. Instead he turns to attack the leader of the brigands, a sweeping low cut that strikes her under the ribs and tears flesh up. How she's still standing, bleeding from knee, rib, and shoulder, you can't say. What you do know for sure is she won't be standing long.

"Well now, it seems the hard road's turned around," you offer. "How's about you lay down your weapons now?"

Her answer comes in the form of several words you don't know, but from context at least some of that is anatomically impossible.

For just a moment, in the middle of the fighting, Cob looks thoughtful, like he's having an argument with himself, then he stabs the back of her other knee, finally sending her down.

"Give up now or I stab into head!" He shouts, holding the dagger above the shape-changer's crumpled form.

Legs and Ellie save vs Glitterdust (DC 16): 17, 6 (Success, Failure)
Gorok Attacks (AC 22): 22, 10 (Hit, Miss) -> Shifter takes 16 Damage -> Now at 1/55
Akorian Intimidation (DC 24): 1d20+17 = 18 (Critical Failure)
Legs vs Shadow Enchantment/Hold Person (DC 17): 1d20+3 = 17 (Success)
Cob Attack: 1d20+14 = 25 (Hit) -> Shifter takes 10 Damage Now at -9/55, Unconscious

"Fuck me with a drake's beak!" Gavis curses wearily. "Dwarf's going to kill us anyway if we give up!"

"He wants treasure more than blood," Sirim presses the thought into everyone's head... which from a certain perspective may be more frightening than either you or Cob.

Gorok rubs his eye with one clawed hand and considers the man who had set up the ambush, next to the looming and still very angry Warty. "Paths are narrow and steep, choose one or fall."

Even still, you half think they are just going to dash away, but the three thieves grudgingly lay down their weapons.

What terms does Kori think the party should impose?

[] Take their magic items

[] Take their other valuables

[] Take everything and then send them back to Carpenden to be judged (Write in how)

[] Write in

OOC: That thoughtful moment was Cob deciding not to do sneak attack damage which would have killed her and caused them to fight to the death. The Cob of a few months ago would not have done that.

I would rather just kill them and take all their stuff.

They came at us and now they should die. No need to leave enemies behind us needlessly. It's not like they were going to leave us alive here if they won.
