"Enough blood has been spilled," you say after a moment, surprised at the sharp nod you get in return.

Had this been some kind of test?

The look shared between the officers confirms it, but then why had you passed by showing mercy? Was it the sentiment itself, the hope of tracking him down to his dwelling place and the treasures of Azlant, or the hope of making peace with the fishmen? On consideration of everything you had learned of Caulker and his order of 'knights', you guess more the first more than the second or the third.

Akorian Sense Motive: 1d20+11 = 30 (Success)

Mayhap you should have been paying more attention to the prisoner as you rounded on him. "Hear me well, Galvo-slayer. You have been fortunate indeed, for the dwellers above are mighty and given to blood vengeance. A people like yours, beset by mind-hunters, can ill afford to face their ire."

Though he keeps quiet, eyes unblinking upon your face, he does not seem particularly impressed. Mayhap he had concluded that the surface dwellers would struggle to even reach his undersea dwelling as much as one might plumbing the depths of Orv.

Akorian Bluff: 1d20+14 = 16 (Failure)

After he had been untied, lead across the deck and over the side of the ship, Caulker puts a hand on your shoulder—you try not to flinch—and says: "Good try lad, can't have hurt, might have even helped, and its not like I could have sent the bugger down with a bottle of my best Carpaden!"

"You could hardly have done so now, sir," the usually quiet first mate says. "Seeing as how you drank the last of it today."

A laugh is beyond you, a smile will have to do. Hopefully it does not look as ill at ease as you feel.

What does it say about you, you wonder, that you feel more comfortable in the company of a baleful-eyed shadow than officers with their jests? Said serpent of shadow floats over a very bewildered but cooperative Click as the light and shadows play over his face. It had been Mina's idea to ask the magician if he can guess more about the baby's heritage, and from the looks of things a good one. After about six castings of enveloping shadows, only three of which had actually caught on, and performing several curious experiments on a tuft of hair you had been very careful not to leave out of your sight he seems to have come to a conclusion.

"The child is not a product of a natural union between infernal spirit and mortal flesh. The ability to see souls, summon darkness and fire, all these are commonplace boons of infernal blood, but translocation? Perhaps in time, as a sorcerer unlocks the secrets of that blood, but the child is much too young for that. A diabolist, skilled as they were bold, meddled..." Pepper sneezes in disgust at the word, but Sirim pays him no mind. "To grant the child a greater portion of Hell's power than such a joining would have normally produced. The most straightforward way to do so would be to slay a fiend with soul-rending rites during the very act of procreation, so that it's power might pass to its progeny."

Sirim Knowledge (the Planes): 1d20+11 = 30 (Full Success)

"Why?" Mina asks, obviously horrified at the image.

A serpentine body-plan is not really made for shrugs, but you guess the quick flick of the head serves the same purpose. "You did find a mark of Chelish nobility with him, so my guess would be for power, though I doubt they were expecting this. A teleporting infant is a tad difficult to hide and tieflings are not well loved in Cheliax. Most likely the hope would have been for a strong sorcerous bloodline, something the child could control and use to his advantage and the advantage of his house."

"So that is why he was sent away then?" you ask, wondering if how Click would deal with the family that abandoned him.

"With a blanket proclaiming his identity?" Sirim sounds briefly incredulous before tempering himself, adding in a much more even tone. "No, someone either kidnapped the infant or smuggled him out. As for what use an inquisitor of Asmodeus would have had for one of such potent blood... nothing good. I would rather not speculate further."

Sirim Knowledge (the Planes): 1d20+11 = 24 (Success)

"So devils will be after him them, to avenge their fallen fellow?" Mina asks, looking down at the now burbling baby with concern.

"Devils are after anyone with power, but they would hardly seek to avenge a failure. To Hell's way of thinking, for any of their number to fail in their dealings with mortals deserve a soul-flaying demotion in any case." The serpent laughs with genuine mirth. "It is hard to imagine a failure more profound than being used as a breeding aid by a diabolist."

"Thank you," Mina says a little awkwardly. "You've been very helpful."

"This has been an interesting distraction to an otherwise dull journey."

"You have goblin's idea of dull," Gorok says, the slight hiss betraying his amusement.

Sirim does not object.

Over the remainder of the journey Mina learns one of Sirim's spells in exchange for teaching him several of hers. Which one is it?

[] Ray of Enfeeblement

[] Ferment

[] Greater Detect Magic

[] Darkness

OOC: Mina basically paid him in spells for this consultation, but since there is time and to square things away she also gets one of his.

So which spell? I favor Greater Detect Magic but since we are going into Andoran, Ferment may be useful to pay Cayden Cailean respect?

Secret test of character to make sure our party wasn't full of evil people like most think come out of the Underdark? A little rude, if understandable.

Shame about not really imposing the warning, but hopefully won't try again or we will at least not be on a boat the next time they do.

So someone made a deal with a devil to have sex with them and help bear a child, and during the act killed said devil in a very depowering way to steal their power and make the baby itself stronger? Wow, how embarrassing.

@DragonParadox anyway we can see Click's little baby character sheet with new info?

So basically Click just a pawn in evil power struggles, as we most likely thought.

Here is hoping we can find him a better home elsewhere, where he can be raised with love and use his abilities for good.

New magic!

I'm voting for Greater Detect Magic, since that shit is always useful.

Someone probably compelled a devil according to Sirim. It is very unlikely one of them would allow pieces of their soul/identity to be torn off to make a super-baby

Click is too young to have stats, but he does have SR 16 and some amount of teleport and either at will or constant detect magic to have been able to see the bane dagger's nature and get scared of it.

To play devil's advocate, not that they need one, why not Ray of Enfeeblement? Stat-reducing spells are nothing to scoff at, looking back at the one that ruined the priest's DEX.

Admittedly, the kind of people we'd want to use it on, the ones at the forefront of a fight, would have a high STR score.

That's pretty solid confirmation that Click is some sort of variant Half-Fiend rather than a mere Tiefling. That's a powerful template for the rugrat, even before taking into account any additional boosts the experimentation conferred. I'll be happy when we find a friendly temple to take him in. Is there a temple of Desna in the city we're traveling to, @DragonParadox

Ray of Enfeeblement isn't bad at all, as 1st level spells go, but I don't think it's the best option here. On top of requiring a Fortitude save, which is generally the best save for the sorts of enemies you want to inflict Strength damage on, it also requires a Ranged Tough Attack.

Mina already has plenty of good options to use instead of the ray. Her Ear-Piercing Scream spell inflicts damage and can Daze a target on a failed save, which isn't even a Mind-Affecting effect, so it can be used on almost any creature.

Her Slumber Hex can put most things down for a bit, and in the middle of a fight that's often all it takes.

Her Evil Eye Hex can be used to inflict a -2 penalty to enemy attack rolls, which is like inflicting a -4 Strength penalty on them. When she reaches 8th level, the attack roll penalty increases to -4, or the equivalent of -8 Strength.

These Hexes are Mind-Affecting, so there is a not insignificant group of beings who are unaffected by them, but as a non-damaging Fortitude-targeting spell, Ray of Enfeeblement has a lot of overlap with her Hexes in creatures they won't affect.
Not Darkness to set the battlefield to our advantage?
Kori already has a good handle of Darkness-related spells, and that's only going to increase as we level. Darkness wouldn't be a bad spell for her to learn, but her Web and Glitterdust spells are almost always going to be the preferred options for her 2nd level control-type spells, IMO.

I'm going with Greater Detect Magic because it gives us a good option for when we need to more thoroughly investigate a person, place, or thing. As a prepared caster, this is one of those spells that is nice to have for a given situation but not one you prepare regularly for day-to-day adventuring.

A small one, the most prominent temple is that of Gorzeh, but this is the second largest city in Andoran, you can expect to find a temple to all of the approved major gods there.

Hmmm... I would think the Temples of Cayden Cailean, Pharasma or Ragathiel would be a better fit for the kid.
Maybe, but Mina was raised in a temple of Desna, so she would be predisposed to trusting them to treat an unusual child well. Also, as a worshipper of Desna and former ward, the temple will probably be quiet friendly to Mina and her party.

If we're possibly going to be operating out of this area for a bit, it can't hurt to have a friendly temple to call on. If nothing else, we might get a discount on spellcasting services should they prove necessary.

Ragathiel is an Empyrial Lord. I would have to roll if there is a temple as for Pharasma though Mina would rather not put him there. Temples of Pharasma tend to be rather grim places, children do end up there because she is associated with birth as much as death, but that does not mean it is necessarily a good place to raise one.

Sheylin is another good one if you want. Given what her brother turned into and her hopes that he might somehow turn back they are not as down on those with the blood of evil outsiders as many.

I lean towards Shelyn personally.

Both Shelyn and Desna will have a more nuanced view on good and evil.

Though even among good gods only Ragathiel would unashamedly raise click to be a weapon.

Shelynites would try to instill a sense of wonder and beauty. Desnans a sense of freedom and love for adventure.

Wut? No one trusts Cayden Cailean just because he drinks?
Hardly.

If anything he is one of the good gods most concerned with the care and protection of orphans. Probably because he was an orphan.

"The church also sponsors a large number of orphanages, and it's not uncommon for children from such locations to take the surname Cailean when they leave."

"Starstone Brewers is a loose organization of Cayden Cailean's worshippers. They are an itinerant group across the roadways of the Inner Sea, with an ad-hoc membership any of the faithful can join. They are united under the guise of teaching people how to make excellent ale, but they could also be problem-solvers and competent muscle in the service of good. The primary work of the organization is helping find homes for orphans, children especially beloved of Cayden Cailean. They sweep through and past the battlefields, looking for children who have lost their homes and their parents. They take them to established orphanages of Cayden Cailean, keeping the details in records. If no parents are found, the Starstone Brewers look for loving homes for the children. Some raise orphans as their own. The organization break the law when rescuing orphaned children from slavery and exploitation in countries where this is legal, but the members of the Starstone Brewers treat those that take advantage of orphaned children with absolutely no mercy.1"

If anything it sounds like the Caileanites might come looking for us after we drop click off. "A bunch of shady figures dropping off a clearly fiend blooded child etc etc."

I'm not sure putting a sword in someone's hand is the best way to keep them apart from violence.
True but violence and worse will come unto him anyways, be it superstitious mobs fearing his heritage or his family (both mortal & infernal). Better to have a sword in hand to defend oneself than to have none when needed.

Besides Ragathites take Honor & Oaths seriously. Their violence is never senseless.

For that it's worth Click has Teleport as as SLA so he is by default going to have the option to be (up to) several hundred miles away from things that threaten him, mobs or otherwise. Of course that does not help with discrimination, but that is a hell of a lot more than most tieflings have to work with.
